Abstract

The emergence of AI tools in cybersecurity creates many opportunities and uncertainties. A focus group with advanced graduate students in cybersecurity revealed the potential depth and breadth of the challenges and opportunities. The salient issues are access to open source or free tools, documentation, curricular diversity, and clear articulation of ethical principles for AI cybersecurity education. Confronting the "black box" mentality in AI cybersecurity work is also of the greatest importance, doubled by deeper and prior education in foundational AI work. Systems thinking and effective communication were considered relevant areas of educational improvement. Future AI educators and practitioners need to address these issues by implementing rigorous technical training curricula, clear documentation, and frameworks for ethically monitoring AI combined with critical and system's thinking and communication skills.

Abstract

AbstractThe paper provides solutions to the main challenge of using cybersecurity and artificial intelligence with ethics in mind: ensuring that ethics is present and justified in the design process. We propose ethical principles, a reasoning method, and training competencies to achieve this goal. These principles are autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, trust, justice, and transparency. The competencies include defining the context, identifying ethical priorities, setting minimum ethical thresholds, and analyzing tradeoffs of prioritized ethical principles. The focus is on reasoning, which is justifying technical choices while considering their negative and positive ethical implications in context, from personal to social. Ethical reasoning also involves “ethical action” competencies (practical knowledge sets) that cybersecurity professionals and students can learn to incorporate ethical principles into their decision-making process. Abstract

Metatheoretical perspectives, and their role in influencing the research process, can be difficult for undergraduate students to grasp. The communication field brings together myriad approaches to communication, lending to students' confusion (Muller, H. L., & Craig, R. T. [2007]. Introduction. In R. T. Craig & H. L. Muller [Eds.], "Theorizing communication: Readings across traditions" [pp. ix-xviii]. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage). To understand theory building, students must grasp how paradigmatic assumptions inform approaches to research (e.g. the questions asked, methodology, and analysis). To simplify these concepts, Griffin et al. (Griffin, E., Ledbetter, A., & Sparks, G. [2018]. "A first look at communication theory" [10th ed.]. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill) place theories on a continuum, ranging from interpretive (e.g. constructionist) to objective (e.g. positivist, post-positivist). These simplified terms lose the nuances of each paradigm but allow students to become familiar with how differences in world views shape scholars' approaches to the study of communication. The purpose of this activity is to provide students with an opportunity to further their understanding about how metatheoretical assumptions influence approaches to research. Courses: Introduction to Communication Theory, Introduction to Communication, Introduction to Research Methods. Objectives: (1) Describe the metatheoretical assumptions held by "objective" and "interpretive" scholars; (2) Distinguish among paradigmatic approaches; and (3) Explain how metatheoretical assumptions influence scholars' approaches to research.

Abstract

This study examines National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I athletes' experiences engaging in activism through the lens of the communicative constitution of organizations. Specifically, we investigated the modalities and approaches collegiate athletes employ in their activism. Findings indicate that collegiate athletes gravitate toward online and offline channels, and fiscal, ideological, and organizational activities as modalities for their activist efforts. We also uncovered that collegiate athletes' inclination to call-in versus call-out is characterized by their willingness to engage with the recipients of their cause-related messages. This inquiry demonstrates the discursive and material nature of collegiate athlete activism, highlighting the call-in approach, and provides direction for athletes and athletic institutions in this time of heightened activist engagement. 19. A Meta-Study of Filicide: Reconceptualizing Child Deaths by Parents

Abstract

Filicide, the killing of a child by a parent, is the focus of this meta-study. In the United States, the total number of nonaccidental deaths of children at the hands of a parent is unknown. Five children a day under the age of five die from fatal abuse and neglect (U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1995). This number is a conservative estimate and does not include children kill by means other than abuse and neglect. Regardless of the number, this author views each filicide as a sentinel event for the United States and the world. A sentinel event is an unexpected occurrence involving death and signals the need for immediate investigation and response. The perspectives of social constructionism and role theory frame this meta-study. The author explored six questions of the extant filicide research: What is the research knowledge on filicide? How is filicide constructed in the research discourse and what is the context of this research? Is filicide constructed as a social problem? Can the use of role theory advance our understanding of filicide? Are there common themes in the filicide research findings? Is there disagreement in the research? What is missing, assumed, or overlooked in the research? The sample consisted of 66 international studies of parents (i.e., genetic, step, foster, person in role of parent) who killed their child(ren) from 1969 to 2009. Major findings include "meta-categories" of filicide research, risk factors, salient themes, and new conceptualization of filicide based on role theory. Individual, social, and structural variables to identify and prevent filicide are presented. 25. Intervention Teachers: A Promising Answer to the Challenge of Educating High School Learning Disabilities Students.

Abstract

This paper describes the use of special "Intervention Teachers" to address the needs of severely learning disabled (LD) high school students in a Chicago Public High School. In this approach the Intervention Teacher, a trained LD teacher, consults with, helps, and observes the regular teacher's instructional plans and implementation. Intervention teachers attempt to provide effective support services to the subject area teachers and direct instruction to the learning disabled students. Much of the paper provides background to the development of the Intervention Teacher approach including the population involved, the influence of the Chicago School Reform Act which decentralized school responsibilities, the special education supervisory hierarchy in the Chicago Public Schools, the continuum of learning disabilities services in the system (e.g., mainstreaming, resource support services, cooperative team teaching, and the direct instructional approach). The needs and development of the Intervention Teacher approach in the specific school is discussed in terms of problem identification, the team approach, research and review of other programs, and the development of the Intervention Teacher position. Abstract

To increase their research skills and confidence, students in a nonresearch-focused elective MSW course gathered qualitative data through cross-ethnic interviews for a formal research project. Qualitative findings from a focus group of students were used to examine the perspectives of the students, all but one of whom were women, about (a) changes in their knowledge of and attitudes toward research, (b) the struggles they experienced, and (c) whether such projects should be integrated into other courses. Implications for social work educators who are seeking to empower social work students, especially women, to conduct research are discussed. Abstract

This study proposes a social and emotional disclosure model for understanding the mechanism that explains sharing intimate information on social media (Twitter). Previous research has indicated that some aspects of social, emotional, and attitudinal information processing are involved in disclosure of intimate information. However, these factors have been considered in isolation. This study proposes and tests a theoretically grounded model that brings all of these factors together by combining individual and group social media behaviors and online information processing in the realm of online social movements. The core explanatory model considers the impact of peer response, emotional evaluation, personal relevance, issue orientation, and motivation to post online on intimate information disclosure online. A path analysis building on four Poisson multiple regressions conducted on 28,629 #MeToo tweets evaluates the relationships proposed in the explanatory model. Results indicate that emotional evaluation and motivation to post online have direct, positive impacts on online disclosure. Other factors such as peer response, issue orientation, and personal relevance have negative direct relationships with online disclosure. Motivation to post online mediates the effects of emotional evaluation, issue orientation, and personal relevance on online disclosure while issue orientation mediates the effect of personal relevance on motivation to post online. This study offers findings that have use for practitioners interested in hashtag virality and to social media users interested in social influence and online information sharing.

48. Validation of Simple Epidemiological or Clinical Methods for the Measurement of Body Composition in Young Children

Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed to determine the validity of simple epidemiological and clinical methods for the assessment of body fatness in preschool children.\ud \ud Methods: In 89 children (42 boys, 47 girls; mean age 4.1 SD 1.3y) measures of body fatness were made using total body water (TBW), dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), air displacement plethysmography (BODPOD) and skinfold thickness. Methods were compared by Bland–Altman analysis using TBW as the reference method, and by paired comparisons and rank order correlations.\ud \ud Findings: Bias for DXA was +1.8% body fat percentage units (limits of agreement +15.5% to -11.9%), bias for BODPOD was -3.5% (limits of agreement +18.9% to -5.9%) and bias for skinfolds using the Slaughter equations was -6.5% (limits of agreement +10.0% to –23.1%). Significant rank order correlations with TBW measures of fatness were obtained for DXA estimates of fatness (r=0.54, P=0.01), but not for estimates of fat by skinfold thickness (r=0.20, P=0.2) or BODPOD (r=0.25, P=0.1). Differences between both DXA and BODPOD and the reference TBW estimates of body fatness were not significant (P=0.06 and P=0.1 respectively); however, the difference in estimated body fatness between skinfold thickness and TBW was significant (P\ud \ud Conclusion: Estimates of body fatness in preschool children were inaccurate at the level of the individual child using all the methods, but DXA might provide unbiased estimates and a means of making relative assessments of body fatness.

49. Resectable gastric carcinoma: an evaluation of preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy

Abstract

Stomach cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer death in the US and was responsible for 13,700 deaths last year. The primary treatment is surgery, but the outlook is poor, and fewer than 20 percent of patients are likely to survive more than five years. Since many patients with stomach cancer relapse after apparently complete surgical removal of the cancer, a study was undertaken to evaluate the use of a regimen of chemotherapeutic treatment along with surgery. A total of 25 patients with previously untreated stomach cancer were given chemotherapeutic courses of etoposide, 5-fluorouracil, and cisplatin both before and after the surgical removal of their cancer. Six of the 25 patients had major responses to the preoperative chemotherapy, and 20 of 25 had subjective improvements including better appetite. At surgery, it was found that none of the 25 patients had a complete response to the chemotherapeutic treatment. In three cases, however, the only residual cancer was microscopic deposits. In seven patients, cancer spread was found at the time of surgery and so the surgery was potentially curative in only 18 cases. All seven patients with cancer spread were dead within 15 months. Of the remaining 18 patients, seven have died within an average follow-up period of just over two years. The side effects of the chemotherapy were only moderate, and there were no deaths attributed to this treatment, although one patient died of postoperative respiratory complications. This study indicates the feasibility of combining chemotherapy with surgical treatment for stomach cancer. Before a study is conducted to compare surgery with chemotherapy with surgery alone, it would seem appropriate to develop a chemotherapeutic regimen with a better response rate for this cancer. Based on comparisons with other forms of cancer, a suitable goal would be the development of an adjuvant chemotherapeutic protocol with a complete response rate of between 5 and 10 percent.
