14. A Process for Comparing Dynamics of Distributed Space Systems Simulations

Abstract

The paper describes a process that was developed for comparing the primary orbital dynamics behavior between space systems distributed simulations. This process is used to characterize and understand the fundamental fidelities and compatibilities of the modeling of orbital dynamics between spacecraft simulations. This is required for high-latency distributed simulations such as NASA s Integrated Mission Simulation and must be understood when reporting results from simulation executions. This paper presents 10 principal comparison tests along with their rationale and examples of the results. The Integrated Mission Simulation (IMSim) (formerly know as the Distributed Space Exploration Simulation (DSES)) is a NASA research and development project focusing on the technologies and processes that are related to the collaborative simulation of complex space systems involved in the exploration of our solar system. Currently, the NASA centers that are actively participating in the IMSim project are the Ames Research Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Johnson Space Center (JSC), the Kennedy Space Center, the Langley Research Center and the Marshall Space Flight Center. In concept, each center participating in IMSim has its own set of simulation models and environment(s). These simulation tools are used to build the various simulation products that are used for scientific investigation, engineering analysis, system design, training, planning, operations and more. Working individually, these production simulations provide important data to various NASA projects.

Abstract

This paper investigated the perspectives of tutors in integrating information and communication technologies into their teaching. There is universal recognition of the need to use information and communication technologies in education as this is an era of globalization where the flow of information via satellite and the internet dominates information dissemination. This study is underpinned by the uses and gratifications theory, and a quantitative research design was used with a purposive sampling technique to select 120 tutors from Ghanaian colleges of education. The findings of the study revealed that most of the tutors have knowledge of information and communication technologies and they integrate information and communication technologies in their teaching and learning process. Furthermore, the tutors' level of knowledge of information and communication technology positively affects their information and communication technology integration in the teaching and learning process. We recommended that tutors should continue to use information and communication technologies to reshape and support their teaching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. The historical contribution of solid rocket motors to the one centimeter debris population

The measured small particle population in earth orbit contains cm-sized objects that are not accounted for by breakup fragments. It was proposed that slag ejection during solid rocket motor burn is a contributor to this population. The direct evidence for such slag ejection follows from: observations of the exhausts of vehicles in flight, and engineering data from static firings. A source model is presented to account for the contribution of slag expulsion from solid rocket motors to the debris population. The mass and velocity distribution of the slag effluents are taken into account and used as a source term in the debris environment model. The model is based on the available observation data and on models for slag development and ejection.

18. Analysis of orbital perturbations acting on objects in orbits near geosynchronous earth orbit

Abstract

The paper presents a numerical investigation of orbital evolution for objects started in GEO or in orbits near GEO in order to study potential orbital debris problems in this region. Perturbations simulated include nonspherical terms in the earth's geopotential field, lunar and solar gravity, and solar radiation pressure. Objects simulated include large satellites, for which solar radiation pressure is insignificant, and small particles, for which solar radiation pressure is an important force. Results for large satellites are largely in agreement with previous GEO studies that used classical perturbation techniques. The orbit plane of GEO satellites placed in a stable plane orbit inclined approximately 7.3 deg to the equator experience very little precession, remaining always within 1.2 percent of their initial orientation. Solar radiation pressure generates two major effects on small particles: an orbital eccentricity oscillation anticipated from previous research, and an oscillation in orbital inclination.

20. Results in orbital evolution of objects in the geosynchronous region

Abstract

The orbital evolution of objects at or near geosynchronous orbit (GEO) has been simulated to investigate possible hazards to working geosynchronous satellites. Orbits of both large satellites and small particles have been simulated, subject to perturbations by nonspherical geopotential terms, lunar and solar gravity, and solar radiation pressure. Large satellites in initially circular orbits show an expected cycle of inclination change driven by lunar and solar gravity, but very little altitude change. They thus have little chance of colliding with objects at other altitudes. However, if such a satellite is disrupted, debris can reach thousands of kilometers above or below the initial satellite altitude. Small particles in GEO experience two cycles driven by solar radiation: an expected eccentricity cycle and an inclination cycle not expected. Particles generated by GEO insertion stage solid rocket motors typically hit the earth or escape promptly; a small fraction appear to remain in persistent orbits.

23. Activity Allocation in an Under-Resourced World: Toward Improving Engagement with Public Health Programs via Restless Bandits

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are being developed widely within society to improve decision-making, especially in resource-constrained settings like public health. However, developing effective AI tools for public health is complicated by scale, the time-varying and intervention-dependent nature of individuals' behavior, and scarcity --- of intervention resources, historical data, and real-time observations. Many of these challenges are unaddressed in literature and can lead to poor outcomes if ignored in real-world AI support systems for public health. For example, previous works have modeled the problem of delivering interventions to improve engagement with health programs as a restless bandit, a widely-studied framework in which a set of stochastic arms are controlled by a planner with a limited intervention budget. However, these works do not account for the uncertainty that results from estimating the dynamics of stochastic arms from noisy observations and historical data. To address this, I introduce the first methods for computing uncertainty-robust restless bandit policies, across a range of assumptions on prior information and observability. I achieve this by designing novel approaches to efficiently search large policy and uncertainty spaces, e.g., a new multi-agent deep reinforcement learning paradigm in which a centralized budget-network communicates with per-arm policy-networks to learn globally optimal policies in an environment controlled by a regret-maximizing adversary-network. In union with this work, I advance art within the more computationally intensive generalization of restless bandits that finds policies which balance many types of interventions with unique costs and effects, e.g., a phone call vs.~in-person visit; my works identify and exploit functional structures to design new algorithms that scale. This dissertation tackles several such challenges driven by identifying the key missing capabilities of interdisciplinary collaborators, especially tuberculosis healthcare workers and workers within a maternal health nonprofit in India.

Perforation of an aortic aneurysm into the superior vena cava is still a rare entity; most authors have reported one or two cases.1 Although our patient came to the Veterans Administration Hospital in May, 1950, we intended to delay publication until we had an additional case to report; however, we have not seen another patient with this condition. A correct diagnosis was made during the patient's life without cardiac catheterization or angiocardiography.REPORT OF A CASEL. R. T., a 53-year-old white male veteran, was admitted to the hospital by ambulance on May 11, 1950, in a semistuporous, disoriented, and confused state. He was dyspneic and could scarcely speak, the history being taken from his wife. ROKITANSKY1 first described a disease entity in which many organs exhibited a firm waxy substance. Later Virchow2 noted that this substance stained blueblack with iodine and showed some similarity to starch. He therefore called this substance "amyloid" and the disease entity "amyloidosis." Wilks3 was the first to note that this disease followed chronic suppurative conditions.It is customary to classify amyloidosis as (1) primary amyloidosis, also called systemic or focal amyloidosis, the etiology of which is unknown; (2) secondary amyloidosis, in which the disease is an end-result of other chronic diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, osteomyelitis, or cancer, and (3) amyloidosis following multiple myeloma.Amyloidosis, either primary or secondary, is still a relatively rare disease. RECENTLY we had the opportunity to study an unusual case of chronic renal failure, associated with changes in bone suggestive of osteitis fibrosa cystica. The patient had true diabetes mellitus rather than renal glycosuria, which has been described in previous cases. Additional unusual findings at postmortem examination, including polycystic disease of the pancreas, prompted us to present this case with a review of the literature. The triad of chronic nephritis, bony changes in the skeleton and physical dwarfism has been designated as renal rickets.1 This is actually a misnomer in that the bony changes are not those characteristic of rickets and it is not even necessary that rickets be associated with this syndrome,2 although it is sometimes associated with rickets.3 A better term would be renal hyperparathyroidism with osteoporosis, as designated by Park and Eliot,4 renal osteitis fibrosa cystica (Albright and others5) or osteodystrophy (Norman

Abstract

This article informs about the strike in the cotton fields in central Alabama involving approximately 3,000 cotton pickers and wage hands. The strike is spreading rapidly into other countries in which the Share-Croppers' Union is organized. This strike differs from a factory strike in that the cotton opens at different times in different places and the pickers must wait until they are called to work before they announce that they are striking. The lie is given to the "red scare" of the newspapers by the strikers themselves. The miserable conditions under which they work, the starvation wages of $3 a week and less, the denial of all civil and constitutional rights have united all the cotton pickers, wage hands, and rural relief workers in a determined struggle to win.
