Search

The far-ultraviolet (FUV) flare activity of low-mass stars has become a focus in our understanding of the exoplanet atmospheres and how they evolve. However, direct detection of FUV flares and measurements of their energies and rates are limited by the need for space-based observations. The difficulty of obtaining such observations may push some works to use widely available optical data to calibrate multi-wavelength spectral models that describe UV and optical flare emission. These models either use single temperature blackbody curves to describe this emission, or combine a blackbody curve with archival spectra. These calibrated models would then be used to predict the FUV flare rates of low-mass stars of interest. To aid these works, we used TESS optical photometry and archival HST FUV spectroscopy to test the FUV predictions of literature flare models. We tested models for partially (M0-M2) and fully convective (M4-M5) stars, 40 Myr and field age stars, and optically quiet stars. We calculated FUV energy correction factors that can be used to bring the FUV predictions of tested models in line with observations. A flare model combining optical and NUV blackbody emission with FUV emission based on HST observations provided the best estimate of FUV flare activity, where others underestimated the emission at all ages, masses and activity levels, by up to a factor of 104 for combined FUV continuum and line emission and greater for individual emission lines. We present the results of a multi-wavelength Pro-Am campaign to study the behaviour of flares from the active M1.5V star binary CR Draconis. CR Dra was observed with TESS 20-s photometry, Swift near-UV (NUV) grism spectroscopy and with ground-based optical photometry and spectroscopy from a global collaboration of amateur astronomers. We detected 14 flares with TESS and Swift simultaneously, one of which also had simultaneous ground-based photometry and spectroscopy. We used the simultaneous two-colour optical and NUV observations to characterise the temperature evolution of the flare and test the accuracy of using optical data to predict NUV emission. We measured a peak temperature of $7100^{+150}_{-130}$ K for this flare, cooler than the typically assumed 9000 K blackbody model used by flare studies. We also found that the 9000 K blackbody overestimated the NUV flux for other flares in our sample, which we attributed to our Swift observations occurring during flare decays, highlighting the phase-dependence for the accuracy of flare models., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We report the discovery of a brown dwarf orbiting a M1 host star. We first identified the brown dwarf within the Next Generation Transit Survey data, with supporting observations found in TESS sectors 11 and 38. We confirmed the discovery with follow-up photometry from the South African Astronomical Observatory, SPECULOOS-S, and TRAPPIST-S, and radial velocity measurements from HARPS, which allowed us to characterise the system. We find an orbital period of ~1.25 d, a mass of 69.0+5.3-4.8 MJ, close to the Hydrogen burning limit, and a radius of 0.95 +- 0.05 RJ. We determine the age to be >0.5 Gyr, using model isochrones, which is found to be in agreement with SED fitting within errors. NGTS-28Ab is one of the shortest period systems found within the brown dwarf desert, as well as one of the highest mass brown dwarfs that transits an M dwarf. Low mass stars ($\leq 1$ M$_{\odot}$) are some of the best candidates for hosting planets with detectable life because of these stars' long lifetimes and relative planet to star mass and radius ratios. An important aspect of these stars to consider is the amount of ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray radiation incident on planets in the habitable zones due to the ability of UV and X-ray radiation to alter the chemistry and evolution of planetary atmospheres. In this work, we build on the results of the HAZMAT I (Shkolnik & Barman 2014) and HAZMAT III (Schneider & Shkolnik 2018) M star studies to determine the intrinsic UV and X-ray flux evolution with age for M stars using Gaia parallactic distances. We then compare these results to the intrinsic fluxes of K stars adapted from HAZMAT V (Richey-Yowell et al. 2019). We find that although the intrinsic M star UV flux is 10 to 100 times lower than that of K stars, the UV fluxes in their respective habitable zone are similar. However, the habitable zone X-ray flux evolutions are slightly more distinguishable with a factor of 3 -- 15 times larger X-ray flux for late-M stars than for K stars. These results suggest that there may not be a K dwarf advantage compared to M stars in the UV, but one may still exist in the X-ray., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Variability in the far ultraviolet (FUV) emission produced by stellar activity affects photochemistry and heating in orbiting planetary atmospheres. We present a comprehensive analysis of the FUV variability of GJ 436, a field-age, M2.5V star ($P_\mathrm{rot}\approx44$ d) orbited by a warm, Neptune-size planet ($M \approx 25\ M_\oplus$, $R \approx 4.1\ R_\oplus$, $P_\mathrm{orb}\approx2.6$ d). Observations at three epochs from 2012 to 2018 span nearly a full activity cycle, sample two rotations of the star and two orbital periods of the planet, and reveal a multitude of brief flares. Over 2012-2018, the star's $7.75\pm0.10$ yr activity cycle produced the largest observed variations, $38\pm3$% in the summed flux of major FUV emission lines. In 2018, variability due to rotation was $8\pm2$%. An additional $11\pm1$% scatter at 10 min cadence, treated as white noise in fits, likely has both instrumental and astrophysical origins. Flares increased time-averaged emission by 15% over the 0.88 d of cumulative exposure, peaking as high as 25$\times$ quiescence. We interpret these flare values as lower limits given that flares too weak or too infrequent to have been observed likely exist. GJ 436's flare frequency distribution (FFD) at FUV wavelengths is unusual compared to other field-age M dwarfs, exhibiting a statistically-significant dearth of high energy ($>4\times 10^{28}$ erg) events that we hypothesize to be the result of a magnetic star-planet interaction (SPI) triggering premature flares. If an SPI is present, GJ 436 b's magnetic field strength must be $\lesssim$100 G to explain the statistically insignificant increase in orbit-phased FUV emission. We report the discovery of three new hot Jupiters with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) as well as updated parameters for HATS-54b, which was independently discovered by NGTS. NGTS-23b, NGTS-24b and NGTS-25b have orbital periods of 4.076, 3.468, and 2.823 days and orbit G-, F- and K-type stars, respectively. NGTS-24 and HATS-54 appear close to transitioning off the main-sequence (if they are not already doing so), and therefore are interesting targets given the observed lack of Hot Jupiters around sub-giant stars. By considering the host star luminosities and the planets' small orbital separations (0.037 - 0.050 au), we find that all four hot Jupiters are above the minimum irradiance threshold for inflation mechanisms to be effective. NGTS-23b has a mass of 0.61 $M_{J}$ and radius of 1.27 $R_{J}$ and is likely inflated. With a radius of 1.21 $R_{J}$ and mass of 0.52 $M_{J}$, NGTS-24b has a radius larger than expected from non-inflated models but its radius is smaller than the predicted radius from current Bayesian inflationary models. Finally, NGTS-25b is intermediate between the inflated and non-inflated cases, having a mass of 0.64 $M_{J}$ and a radius of 1.02 $R_{J}$. The physical processes driving radius inflation remain poorly understood, and by building the sample of hot Jupiters we can aim to identify the additional controlling parameters, such as metallicity and stellar age., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. We present the results of a coordinated campaign to simultaneously observe the M star binary Ross 733 simultaneously in the optical and near-ultraviolet (NUV) with TESS and Swift respectively. We observed two flares in the Swift NUV light curve. One of these was decay phase of a flare that was also detected with TESS and the other was only detected in the NUV. We used the TESS light curve to measure the white-light flare rate of Ross 733, and calculate that the system flares with an energy of $10^{33}$ erg once every 1.5 days. We used our simultaneous observations to measure a pseudo-continuum temperature of $7340^{+810}_{-900}$K during the flare decay. We also used our observations to test the NUV predictions of the 9000 K blackbody flare model, and find that it underestimates number of flares we detect in our Swift NUV light curve. We discuss the reasons for this and attribute it to the unaccounted contributions from emission lines and continuum temperatures above 9000 K. The ultraviolet (UV) emission of stellar flares may have a pivotal role in the habitability of rocky exoplanets around low-mass stars. Previous studies have used white-light observations to calibrate empirical models which describe the optical and UV flare emission. However, the accuracy of the UV predictions of models have previously not been tested. We combined TESS optical and GALEX UV observations to test the UV predictions of empirical flare models calibrated using optical flare rates of M stars. We find that the canonical 9000 K blackbody model used by flare studies underestimates the GALEX NUV energies of field age M stars by up to a factor of 6.5$\pm$0.7 and the GALEX FUV energies of fully convective field age M stars by 30.6$\pm$10.0. We calculated energy correction factors that can be used to bring the UV predictions of flare models closer in line with observations. We calculated pseudo-continuum flare temperatures that describe both the white-light and GALEX NUV emission. We measured a temperature of 10,700 K for flares from fully convective M stars after accounting for the contribution from UV line emission. We also applied our correction factors to the results of previous studies of the role of flares in abiogenesis. Our results show that M stars do not need to be as active as previously thought in order to provide the NUV flux required for prebiotic chemistry, however we note that flares will also provide more FUV flux than previously modelled., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. Stellar variability is a limiting factor for planet detection and characterization, particularly around active M-type stars. Here we revisit one of the most active stars from the Kepler mission, the M4 star GJ 1243, and use a sample of 414 flare events from 11 months of 1-minute cadence light curves to study the empirical morphology of white-light stellar flares. We use a Gaussian process detrending technique to account for the underlying starspots. We present an improved analytic, continuous flare template that is generated by stacking the flares onto a scaled time and amplitude and uses a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to fit the model. Our model is defined using classical flare events, but can also be used to model complex, multi-peaked flare events. We demonstrate the utility of our model using TESS data at the 10-minute, 2-minute and 20-second cadence modes. Efforts to discover and characterize habitable zone planets have primarily focused on Sun-like stars and M dwarfs. K stars, however, provide an appealing compromise between these two alternatives that has been relatively unexplored. Understanding the ultraviolet (UV) environment around such stars is critical to our understanding of their planets, as the UV can drastically alter the photochemistry of a planet's atmosphere. Here we present near-UV and far-UV \textit{Hubble Space Telescope}'s Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of 39 K stars at three distinct ages: 40 Myr, 650 Myr, and $\approx$5 Gyr. We find that the K star (0.6 -- 0.8 M$_{\odot}$) UV flux remains constant beyond 650 Myr before falling off by an order of magnitude by field age. This is distinct from early M stars (0.3 -- 0.6 M$_{\odot}$), which begin to decline after only a few hundred Myr. However, the rotation-UV activity relation for K stars is nearly identical to that of early M stars. These results may be a consequence of the spin-down stalling effect recently reported for K dwarfs, in which the spin-down of K stars halts for over a Gyr when their rotation periods reach $\approx$10 d, rather than the continuous spin down that G stars experience. These results imply that exoplanets orbiting K dwarfs may experience a stronger UV environment than thought, weakening the case for K stars as hosts of potential "super-habitable" planets., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We analyse 829,481 stars from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) to extract variability periods. We utilise a generalisation of the autocorrelation function (the G-ACF), which applies to irregularly sampled time series data. We extract variability periods for 16,880 stars from late-A through to mid-M spectral types and periods between 0.1 and 130 days with no assumed variability model. We find variable signals associated with a number of astrophysical phenomena, including stellar rotation, pulsations and multiple-star systems. The extracted variability periods are compared with stellar parameters taken from Gaia DR2, which allows us to identify distinct regions of variability in the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. We explore a sample of rotational main-sequence objects in period-colour space, in which we observe a dearth of rotation periods between 15 and 25 days. This 'bi-modality' was previously only seen in space-based data. We demonstrate that stars in sub-samples above and below the period gap appear to arise from a stellar population not significantly contaminated by excess multiple systems. We also observe a small population of long-period variable M-dwarfs, which highlight a departure from the predictions made by rotational evolution models fitted to solar-type main-sequence objects. Ground-based photometry of bright stars is expected to be limited by atmospheric scintillation, although in practice observations are often limited by other sources of systematic noise. We analyse 122 nights of bright star ($G_{mag} < 11.5$) photometry using the 20-cm telescopes of the Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. We compare the noise properties to theoretical noise models and we demonstrate that NGTS photometry of bright stars is indeed limited by atmospheric scintillation. We determine a median scintillation coefficient at the Paranal Observatory of $C_Y = 1.54$, which is in good agreement with previous results derived from turbulence profiling measurements at the observatory. We find that separate NGTS telescopes make consistent measurements of scintillation when simultaneously monitoring the same field. Using contemporaneous meteorological data, we find that higher wind speeds at the tropopause correlate with a decrease in long-exposure ($t=10$ s) scintillation. Hence the winter months between June and August provide the best conditions for high precision photometry of bright stars at the Paranal Observatory. This work demonstrates that NGTS photometric data, collected for searching for exoplanets, contains within it a record of the scintillation conditions at Paranal., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. We present spectroscopic measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for WASP-148b, the only known hot Jupiter with a nearby warm-Jupiter companion, from the WIYN/NEID and Keck/HIRES instruments. This is one of the first scientific results reported from the newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, as well as the second obliquity constraint for a hot Jupiter system with a close-in companion, after WASP-47. WASP-148b is consistent with being in alignment with the sky-projected spin axis of the host star, with $\lambda=-8^{\circ}.2^{{+8^{\circ}.7}}_{-9^{\circ}.7}$. The low obliquity observed in the WASP-148 system is consistent with the orderly-alignment configuration of most compact multi-planet systems around cool stars with obliquity constraints, including our solar system, and may point to an early history for these well-organized systems in which migration and accretion occurred in isolation, with relatively little disturbance. By contrast, previous results have indicated that high-mass and hot stars appear to more commonly host a wide range of misaligned planets: not only single hot Jupiters, but also compact systems with multiple super-Earths. We suggest that, to account for the high rate of spin-orbit misalignments in both compact multi-planet and isolated-hot-Jupiter systems orbiting high-mass and hot stars, spin-orbit misalignments may be caused by distant giant planet perturbers, which are most common around these stellar types., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the discovery of NGTS-19b, a high mass transiting brown dwarf discovered by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). We investigate the system using follow up photometry from the South African Astronomical Observatory, as well as sector 11 TESS data, in combination with radial velocity measurements from the CORALIE spectrograph to precisely characterise the system. We find that NGTS-19b is a brown dwarf companion to a K-star, with a mass of $69.5 ^{+5.7}_{-5.4}$ M$_{Jup}$ and radius of $1.034 ^{+0.055}_{-0.053}$ R$_{Jup}$. The system has a reasonably long period of 17.84 days, and a high degree of eccentricity of $0.3767 ^{+0.0061}_{-0.0061}$. The mass and radius of the brown dwarf imply an age of $0.46 ^{+0.26}_{-0.15}$ Gyr, however this is inconsistent with the age determined from the host star SED, suggesting that the brown dwarf may be inflated. This is unusual given that its large mass and relatively low levels of irradiation would make it much harder to inflate. NGTS-19b adds to the small, but growing number of brown dwarfs transiting main sequence stars, and is a valuable addition as we begin to populate the so called brown dwarf desert., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a search for stellar flares in the first data release from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). We have found 610 flares from 339 stars, with spectral types between F8 and M6, the majority of which belong to the Galactic thin disc. We have used the 13 second cadence NGTS lightcurves to measure flare properties such as the flare amplitude, duration and bolometric energy. We have measured the average flare occurrence rates of K and early to mid M stars and present a generalised method to measure these rates while accounting for changing detection sensitivities. We find that field age K and early M stars show similar flare behaviour, while fully convective M stars exhibit increased white-light flaring activity, which we attribute to their increased spin down time. We have also studied the average flare rates of pre-main sequence K and M stars, showing they exhibit increased flare activity relative to their main sequence counterparts., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. We present the results of a search for stellar flares from stars neighbouring the target sources in the Kepler short cadence data. These flares have been discarded as contaminants in previous surveys and therefore provide an unexplored resource of flare events, in particular high energy events from faint stars. We have measured M dwarf flare energies up to 1.5$\times$10^35 erg, pushing the limit for flare energies measured using Kepler data. We have used our sample to study theflaring activity of wide binaries, finding that the lower mass counterpart in a wide binary flares more often at a given energy. Of the 4430 flares detected in our original search, 298 came from a neighbouring star, a rate of 6.7$\pm$0.4 per cent for the Kepler short cadence lightcurves. We have used our sample to estimate a 5.8$\pm$0.1 per cent rate of false positive flare events in studies using TESS short cadence data., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. The ultraviolet (UV) emission from the most numerous stars in the universe, M dwarfs, impacts the formation, chemistry, atmospheric stability, and surface habitability of their planets. We have analyzed the spectral evolution of UV emission from M0-M2.5 (0.3-0.6 Msun) stars as a function of age, rotation, and Rossby number, using Hubble Space Telescope observations of Tucana Horologium (40 Myr), Hyades (650 Myr), and field (2-9 Gyr) objects. The quiescent surface flux of their C II, C III, C IV, He II, N V, Si III, and Si IV emission lines, formed in the stellar transition region, remains elevated at a constant level for 240 $\pm$ 30 Myr before declining by 2.1 orders of magnitude to an age of 10 Gyr. Mg II and far-UV pseudocontinuum emission, formed in the stellar chromosphere, exhibit more gradual evolution with age, declining by 1.3 and 1.7 orders of magnitude, respectively. The youngest stars exhibit a scatter of 0.1 dex in far-UV line and pseudocontinuum flux attributable only to rotational modulation, long-term activity cycles, or an unknown source of variability. Saturation-decay fits to these data can predict an M0-M2.5 star's quiescent emission in UV lines and the far-UV pseudocontinuum with an accuracy of roughly 0.2-0.3 dex, the most accurate means presently available. About one out of 200 Sun-like stars has a planet with an orbital period shorter than one day: an ultra-short-period planet (Sanchis-ojeda et al. 2014; Winn et al. 2018). All of the previously known ultra-short-period planets are either hot Jupiters, with sizes above 10 Earth radii (Re), or apparently rocky planets smaller than 2 Re. Such lack of planets of intermediate size (the "hot Neptune desert") has been interpreted as the inability of low-mass planets to retain any hydrogen/helium (H/He) envelope in the face of strong stellar irradiation. Here, we report the discovery of an ultra-short-period planet with a radius of 4.6 Re and a mass of 29 Me, firmly in the hot Neptune desert. Data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Ricker et al. 2015) revealed transits of the bright Sun-like star \starname\, every 0.79 days. The planet's mean density is similar to that of Neptune, and according to thermal evolution models, it has a H/He-rich envelope constituting 9.0^(+2.7)_(-2.9)% of the total mass. With an equilibrium temperature around 2000 K, it is unclear how this "ultra-hot Neptune" managed to retain such an envelope. We present the detection of high energy white-light flares from pre-main sequence stars associated with the Orion complex, observed as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). With energies up to $5.2\times10^{35}$ erg these flares are some of the most energetic white-light flare events seen to date. We have used the NGTS observations of flaring and non-flaring stars to measure the average flare occurrence rate for 4 Myr M0-M3 stars. We have also combined our results with those from previous studies to predict average rates for flares above $1\times10^{35}$ ergs for early M stars in nearby young associations., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. We present the discovery of NGTS J214358.5-380102, an eccentric M-dwarf binary discovered by the Next Generation Transit Survey. The system period of 7.618 days is greater than many known eclipsing M-dwarf binary systems. Its orbital eccentricity of $0.323^{+0.0014}_{-0.0037}$, is large relative to the period and semi-major axis of the binary. Global modelling of photometry and radial velocities indicate stellar masses of $M_A$=$0.426 ^{+0.0056}_{-0.0049}$, $M_B$=$0.455 ^{+0.0058}_{-0.0052}$ and stellar radii $R_A$=$0.461 ^{+0.038}_{-0.025}$ $R_B$=$0.411 ^{+0.027}_{-0.039}$, respectively. Comparisons with stellar models for low mass stars show that one star is consistent with model predictions whereas the other is substantially oversized. Spectral analysis of the system suggests a primary of spectral type M3V, consistent with both modelled masses and radii, and with SED fitting of NGTS photometry. As the most eccentric eclipsing M-dwarf binary known, NGTS J214358.5-380102 provides an interesting insight into the strength of tidal effects in the circularisation of stellar orbits., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has produced a large number of single transit event candidates which are being monitored by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). We observed a second epoch for the TIC-231005575 system (Tmag = 12.06, Teff = 5500 +- 85 K) with NGTS and a third epoch with Las Cumbres Observatory's (LCO) telescope in South Africa to constrain the orbital period (P = 61.777 d). Subsequent radial velocity measurements with CORALIE revealed the transiting object has a mass of M2 = 0.128 +- 0.003 M$_\odot$, indicating the system is a G-M binary. The radius of the secondary is R2 = 0.154 +- 0.008 R$_\odot$ and is consistent with models of stellar evolution to better than 1-$\sigma$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. We determine rotation periods for 127 stars in the ~115 Myr old Blanco 1 open cluster using ~200 days of photometric monitoring with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). These stars span F5-M3 spectral types (1.2 $\gtrsim M \gtrsim$ 0.3 M$_{\odot}$) and increase the number of known rotation periods in Blanco 1 by a factor of four. We determine rotation periods using three methods: Gaussian process (GP) regression, generalised autocorrelation (G-ACF) and Lomb-Scargle (LS) periodograms, and find that GPs and G-ACF are more applicable to evolving spot modulation patterns. Between mid-F and mid-K spectral types, single stars follow a well-defined rotation sequence from ~2 to 10 days, whereas stars in photometric multiple systems typically rotate faster. This may suggest that the presence of a moderate-to-high mass ratio companion inhibits angular momentum loss mechanisms during the early pre-main sequence, and this signature has not been erased at ~100 Myr. The majority of mid-F to mid-K stars display evolving modulation patterns, whereas most M stars show stable modulation signals. This morphological change coincides with the shift from a well-defined rotation sequence (mid-F to mid-K stars) to a broad rotation period distribution (late-K and M stars). We report the discovery, by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS), of two hot-Jupiters NGTS-8b and NGTS-9b. These orbit a V = 13.68 K0V star (Teff = 5241 +/- 50 K) with a period of 2.49970 days, and a V = 12.80 F8V star (Teff = 6330 +/- 130 K) in 4.43527 days, respectively. The transits were independently verified by follow-up photometric observations with the SAAO 1.0-m and Euler telescopes, and we report on the planetary parameters using HARPS, FEROS and CORALIE radial velocities. NGTS-8b has a mass, 0.93 +0.04 -0.03 MJ and a radius, 1.09 +/- 0.03 RJ similar to Jupiter, resulting in a density of 0.89 +0.08 -0.07 g cm-3. This is in contrast to NGTS-9b, which has a mass of 2.90 +/- 0.17 MJ and a radius of 1.07 +/- 0.06 RJ , resulting in a much greater density of 2.93 +0.53 -0.49 g cm-3. Statistically, the planetary parameters put both objects in the regime where they would be expected to exhibit larger than predicted radii. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\tess) produces a large number of single-transit event candidates, since the mission monitors most stars for only $\sim$27\,days. Such candidates correspond to long-period planets or eclipsing binaries. Using the \tess\ Sector 1 full-frame images, we identified a 7750\,ppm single-transit event with a duration of 7\,hours around the moderately evolved F-dwarf star \tic\ (Tmag=10.23, \teff=6280$\pm{85}$\,K). Using archival WASP photometry we constrained the true orbital period to one of three possible values. We detected a subsequent transit-event with NGTS, which revealed the orbital period to be 38.20\,d. Radial velocity measurements from the CORALIE Spectrograph show the secondary object has a mass of $M_2$= $0.148\pm{0.003}$\,M$_{\odot}$, indicating this system is an F-M eclipsing binary. The radius of the M-dwarf companion is $R_2$ = $0.171\pm{0.003}$\,R$_{\odot}$, making this one of the most well characterised stars in this mass regime. We report the discovery of a new ultra-short period transiting hot Jupiter from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). NGTS-10b has a mass and radius of $2.162\,^{+0.092}_{-0.107}$ M$_{\rm J}$ and $1.205\,^{+0.117}_{-0.083}$ R$_{\rm J}$ and orbits its host star with a period of $0.7668944\pm0.0000003$ days, making it the shortest period hot Jupiter yet discovered. The host is a $10.4\pm2.5$ Gyr old K5V star ($T_\mathrm{eff}$=$4400\pm100$\,K) of Solar metallicity ([Fe/H] = $-0.02\pm0.12$\,dex) showing moderate signs of stellar activity. NGTS-10b joins a short list of ultra-short period Jupiters that are prime candidates for the study of star-planet tidal interactions. NGTS-10b orbits its host at just $1.46\pm0.18$ Roche radii, and we calculate a median remaining inspiral time of $38$\,Myr and a potentially measurable transit time shift of $7$\,seconds over the coming decade, assuming a stellar tidal quality factor $Q'_{\rm s}=2\times10^{7}$., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures and 5 tables. We present the discovery of NGTS-7Ab, a high mass brown dwarf transiting an M dwarf with a period of 16.2 hours, discovered as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). This is the shortest period transiting brown dwarf around a main or pre-main sequence star to date. The M star host (NGTS-7A) has an age of roughly 55 Myr and is in a state of spin-orbit synchronisation, which we attribute to tidal interaction with the brown dwarf acting to spin up the star. The host star is magnetically active and shows multiple flares across the NGTS and follow up lightcurves, which we use to probe the flare-starspot phase relation. The host star also has an M star companion at a separation of 1.13 arcseconds with very similar proper motion and systemic velocity, suggesting the NGTS-7 system is a hierarchical triple. The combination of tidal synchronisation and magnetic braking is expected to drive ongoing decay of the brown dwarf orbit, with a remaining lifetime of only 5-10 Myr., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Context: Planetary population analysis gives us insight into formation and evolution processes. For short-period planets, the subJovian desert has been discussed in recent years with regard to the planet population in the mass/period and radius/period parameter space without taking stellar parameters into account. The Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) is optimised for detecting planets in this regime, which allows for further analysis of the sub-Jovian desert. Aims: With high-precision photometric surveys (e.g. with NGTS and TESS), which aim to detect short period planets especially around M/K-type host stars, stellar parameters need to be accounted for when empirical data are compared to model predictions. Presenting a newly discovered planet at the boundary of the sub-Jovian desert, we analyse its bulk properties and use it to show the properties of exoplanets that border the sub-Jovian desert. Methods: Using NGTS light curve and spectroscopic follow-up observations, we confirm the planetary nature of planet NGTS-5b and determine its mass. Using exoplanet archives, we set the planet in context with other discoveries. Results: NGTS-5b is a short-period planet with an orbital period of 3.3569866 +- 0.0000026 days. With a mass of 0.229 +- 0.037 MJup and a radius of 1.136 +- 0.023 RJup, it is highly inflated. Its mass places it at the upper boundary of the sub-Jovian desert. Because the host is a K2 dwarf, we need to account for the stellar parameters when NGTS-5b is analysed with regard to planet populations. Conclusions: With red-sensitive surveys (e.g. with NGTS and TESS), we expect many more planets around late-type stars to be detected. We report the discovery of a new ultra-short period hot Jupiter from the Next Generation Transit Survey. NGTS-6b orbits its star with a period of 21.17~h, and has a mass and radius of $1.330^{+0.024}_{-0.028}$\mjup\, and $1.271^{+0.197}_{-0.188}$\rjup\, respectively, returning a planetary bulk density of 0.711$^{+0.214}_{-0.136}$~g~cm$^{-3}$. Conforming to the currently known small population of ultra-short period hot Jupiters, the planet appears to orbit a metal-rich star ([Fe/H]$=+0.11\pm0.09$~dex). Photoevaporation models suggest the planet should have lost 5\% of its gaseous atmosphere over the course of the 9.6~Gyrs of evolution of the system. NGTS-6b adds to the small, but growing list of ultra-short period gas giant planets, and will help us to understand the dominant formation and evolutionary mechanisms that govern this population., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures. We present the detection of a $\Delta V\sim$ -10 flare from the ultracool L2.5 dwarf ULAS J224940.13-011236.9 with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). The flare was detected in a targeted search of late-type stars in NGTS full-frame images and represents one of the largest flares ever observed from an ultracool dwarf. This flare also extends the detection of white-light flares to stars with temperatures below 2000 K. We calculate the energy of the flare to be $3.4^{+0.9}_{-0.7}\times10^{33}$erg, making it an order of magnitude more energetic than the Carrington event on the Sun. We present the detection of an energetic flare on the pre-main sequence M3 star NGTS J121939.5-355557, which we estimate as only 2 Myr old. The flare had an energy of $3.2\pm^{0.4}_{0.3}\times 10^{36}$erg and a fractional amplitude of $7.2\pm0.8$, making it one of the most energetic flares seen on an M star. The star is also X-ray active, in the saturated regime with $log L_{X}/L_{Bol} = -3.1$. In the flare peak we have identified multi-mode quasi-periodic pulsations formed of two statistically significant periods of approximately 320 and 660 seconds. This flare is one of the largest amplitude events to exhibit such pulsations. The shorter period mode is observed to start after a short-lived spike in flux lasting around 30 seconds, which would not have been resolved in Kepler or TESS short cadence modes. Our data shows how the high cadence of NGTS can be used to apply solar techniques to stellar flares and identify potential causes of the observed oscillations. We report the discovery of NGTS-4b, a sub-Neptune-sized planet transiting a 13th magnitude K-dwarf in a 1.34d orbit. NGTS-4b has a mass M=$20.6\pm3.0$M_E and radius R=$3.18\pm0.26$R_E, which places it well within the so-called "Neptunian Desert". The mean density of the planet ($3.45\pm0.95$g/cm^3) is consistent with a composition of 100% H$_2$O or a rocky core with a volatile envelope. NGTS-4b is likely to suffer significant mass loss due to relatively strong EUV/X-ray irradiation. Its survival in the Neptunian desert may be due to an unusually high core mass, or it may have avoided the most intense X-ray irradiation by migrating after the initial activity of its host star had subsided. With a transit depth of $0.13\pm0.02$%, NGTS-4b represents the shallowest transiting system ever discovered from the ground, and is the smallest planet discovered in a wide-field ground-based photometric survey., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We present high cadence detections of two superflares from a bright G8 star (V = 11.56) with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). We improve upon previous superflare detections by resolving the flare rise and peak, allowing us to fit a solar flare inspired model without the need for arbitrary break points between rise and decay. Our data also enables us to identify substructure in the flares. From changing starspot modulation in the NGTS data we detect a stellar rotation period of 59 hours, along with evidence for differential rotation. We combine this rotation period with the observed \textit{ROSAT} X-ray flux to determine that the star's X-ray activity is saturated. We calculate the flare bolometric energies as $5.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\times10^{34}$ and $2.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\times10^{34}$ erg and compare our detections with G star superflares detected in the \textit{Kepler} survey. We find our main flare to be one of the largest amplitude superflares detected from a bright G star. With energies more than 100 times greater than the Carrington event, our flare detections demonstrate the role that ground-based instruments such as NGTS can have in assessing the habitability of Earth-like exoplanets, particularly in the era of \textit{PLATO}., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for Publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
