Bodge is a free and open-source Python package for constructing large-scale real-space tight-binding models for calculations in condensed matter physics. "Large-scale" means that it should remain performant even for lattices with millions of atoms, and "real-space" means that the model is formulated in terms of individual lattice sites and not in momentum space, for example. Although general tight-binding models can be constructed with this package, the main focus is on the Bogoliubov-De Gennes ("BoDGe") Hamiltonian used to model superconductivity in the clean limit. The package is designed to be easy to use, flexible, and extensible - and very few lines of code are required to model heterostructures containing, e.g., conventional and unconventional superconductors, ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, altermagnetism, and spin-orbit coupling. The extreme heat fluxes in the divertor region of tokamaks may require an alternative to solid plasma-facing components, for the extraction of heat and the protection of the surrounding walls. Flowing liquid metals are proposed as an alternative, but raise additional challenges that require investigation and numerical simulations. Free surface designs are desirable for plasma-facing components (PFCs), but steady flow profiles and surface stability must be ensured to limit undesirable interactions with the plasma. Previous studies have mainly used steady-state, 2D, or simplified models for internal flows and have not been able to adequately model free-surface liquid metal (LM) experiments. Therefore, FreeMHD has been recently developed as an open-source magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) solver for free-surface electrically conductive flows subject to a strong external magnetic field. The FreeMHD solver computes incompressible free-surface flows with multi-region coupling for the investigation of MHD phenomena involving fluid and solid domains. The model utilizes the finite-volume OpenFOAM framework under the low magnetic Reynolds number approximation. FreeMHD is validated using analytical solutions for the velocity profiles of closed channel flows with various Hartmann numbers and wall conductance ratios. Next, experimental measurements are then used to verify FreeMHD, through a series of cases involving dam breaking, 3D magnetic fields, and free-surface LM flows. These results demonstrate that FreeMHD is a reliable tool for the design of LM systems under free surface conditions at the reactor scale. Furthermore, it is flexible, computationally inexpensive, and can be used to solve fully 3D transient MHD flows.

The photovoltaics (PV) technology landscape is evolving rapidly. To predict the potential and scalability of emerging PV technologies, a global understanding of these systems' performance is essential. Traditionally, experimental and computational studies at large national research facilities have focused on PV performance in specific regional climates. However, synthesizing these regional studies to understand the worldwide performance potential has proven difficult. Given the expense of obtaining experimental data, the challenge of coordinating experiments at national labs across a politically-divided world, and the data-privacy concerns of large commercial operators, however, a fundamentally different, data-efficient approach is desired. Here, we present a physics-guided machine learning (PGML) scheme to demonstrate that: (a) The world can be divided into a few PV-specific climate zones, called PVZones, illustrating that the relevant meteorological conditions are shared across continents; (b) by exploiting the climatic similarities, high-quality monthly energy yield data from as few as five locations can accurately predict yearly energy yield potential with high spatial resolution and a root mean square error of less than 8 kWhm$^{2}$, and (c) even with noisy, heterogeneous public PV performance data, the global energy yield can be predicted with less than 6% relative error compared to physics-based simulations provided that the dataset is representative. This PGML scheme is agnostic to PV technology and farm topology, making it adaptable to new PV technologies or farm configurations. The results encourage physics-guided, data-driven collaboration among national policymakers and research organizations to build efficient decision support systems for accelerated PV qualification and deployment across the world.

We report the first experimental demonstration of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in nuclear-spin transitions of $^{14}$N within nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond. It is shown that the STIRAP technique suppresses the occupation of the intermediate state, which is a crucial factor for improvements in quantum sensing technology. Building on that advantage, we develop and implement a generalized version of the Ramsey interferometric scheme, employing half-STIRAP pulses to perform the necessary quantum-state manipulation with high fidelity. The enhanced robustness of the STIRAP-based Ramsey scheme to variations in the pulse parameters is experimentally demonstrated, showing good agreement with theoretical predictions. Interacting impurity spins adsorbed on surfaces have been suggested as basic components for applications in quantum computation and spintronics. Such spins usually prefer a parallel or antiparallel configuration, but weakly non-collinear alignments are possible due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that arises in the presence of relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Here, we show that an effective DMI can emerge purely from superconducting correlations without any spin-orbit interaction. We give an analytical proof and provide a numerical study which shows that DMI arises in mixed-parity superconductors solely from the superconducting pairing. We study the propagation of chaos in a class of moderately interacting particle systems for the approximation of singular kinetic McKean-Vlasov SDEs driven by alpha-stable processes. Diffusion parts include Brownian (alpha=2) and pure-jump (1<\alpha<2) perturbations and interaction kernels are considered in a non-smooth anisotropic Besov space. Using Duhamel formula, sharp density estimates (recently issued in Hao, Rockner and Zhang 2023), and suitable martingale functional inequalities, we obtain direct estimates on the convergence rate between the empirical measure of the particle systems toward the McKean-Vlasov distribution. These estimates further lead to quantitative propagation of chaos results in the weak and strong sense.

In a superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid, a magnetically controlled singlet-to-triplet Cooper pair conversion can modulate the superconducting critical temperature. In these triplet superconducting spin valves, such control usually requires inhomogeneous magnetism. However, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling from an interfacial heavy-metal layer, the singlet/triplet conversion rate and thus the critical temperature, can be controlled via the magnetization direction of a single homogeneous ferromagnet. Here, we report significantly enhanced controllable pair conversion to a triplet state in a Nb/Pt/Co/Pt superconducting spin valve in which Pt/Co/Pt is homogeneously magnetized and proximity-coupled to a superconducting layer of Nb. The Co/Pt interface furthest away from Nb is modified by a sub-nanometer-thick layer of Cu or Au. We argue that the enhancement is most likely associated from an improvement of the Co/Pt interface due to the insertion of Cu and Au layers. Additionally, the higher normalized orbital moments in Au measured using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows that increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the triplet proximity effect - an observation supported by our theoretical calculations. The Josephson effect is a hallmark signature of the superconducting state, which, however, has been sparsely explored in non-crystalline superconducting materials. Motivated by this, we consider a Josephson junction consisting of two superconductors with a fractal metallic interlayer, which is patterned as a Sierpi\'nski carpet by removing atomic sites in a self-similar and scale-invariant manner. We here show that the fractal geometry has direct observable consequences on the Josephson effect. In particular, we demonstrate that the form of the supercurrent-magnetic field relation as the fractal generation number increases can be directly related to the self-similar fractal geometry of the normal metallic layer. Furthermore, the maxima of the corresponding diffraction pattern directly encode the self-repeating fractal structure in the course of fractal generation, implying that the corresponding magnetic length directly probes the shortest length scale in the given fractal generation. Our results should motivate future experimental efforts to verify these predictions in designer quantum materials and motivate future pursuits regarding fractal-based SQUID devices., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The development of prototype metropolitan-scale quantum networks is underway and entails transmitting quantum information via single photons through deployed optical fibers spanning several tens of kilometers. The major challenges in building metropolitan-scale quantum networks are compensation of polarization mode dispersion, high-precision clock synchronization, and compensation for cumulative transmission time fluctuations. One approach addressing these challenges is to co-propagate classical probe signals in the same fiber as the quantum signal. Thus, both signals experience the same conditions, and the changes of the fiber can therefore be monitored and compensated. Here, we demonstrate the distribution of polarization entangled quantum signals co-propagating with the White Rabbit Precision Time Protocol (WR-PTP) classical signals in the same single-core fiber strand at metropolitan-scale distances. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of this quantum-classical coexistence by achieving high-fidelity entanglement distribution between nodes separated by 100 km of optical fiber. This advancement is a significant step towards the practical implementation of robust and efficient metropolitan-scale quantum networks.

In this work we investigate quantum interference in a four-level atom coupled to a negative index meta-material (NIMM) anisotropic plasmonic environment that supports both TE and TM polarized surface plasmons (SP). The analysis confirms the creation of the anisotropic environment and two dipoles can interfere with each other even if they are orthogonal by sharing such SP modes. The NIMM/plasmonic environment provides more options to control SP interaction with emitters and their spontaneous emission decays and spectrum. The spectrum depends critically on structure parameters, mode frequency, frequency dependent electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, and the location of the atom etc. We observe orders of magnitudes enhancement in the plasmonic-modified decays and spectrum compared to free space case., Comment: 30 pages , 8 figures , research work

A novel chirped pulse control scheme is presented based on Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (C-CARS) aiming at maximizing the vibrational coherence in atoms and molecules. The scheme utilizes chirping of the three incoming pulses, the pump, the Stokes and the probe, in the four-wave mixing process of C-CARS to fulfill the adiabatic passage conditions. The derivation of the scheme is based on simplifying the four-level system into a 'super-effective' two level system via rotating wave approximation and adiabatic elimination of the excited state manifold. The robustness, spectral selectivity and adiabatic nature of C-CARS method may prove useful for sensing, imaging, and detection. It is demonstrated that the selectivity in excitation of vibrational degrees of freedom can be controlled by carefully choosing the spectral chirp rate of the pulses. The C-CARS control scheme is applied to a surrogate methanol molecule to generate an optimal anti-Stokes signal backscattered from a cloud of molecules a kilometer away. The theory is based on the solution of the coupled Maxwell-Liouville von Neumann equations and focuses on the quantum effects induced in the target molecules by the control pulse trains. The propagation effects of pulses through the medium are evaluated and the buildup of the molecular-specific anti-Stokes signal is demonstrated numerically. A deep learning technique, using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), is implemented to characterize the control pulses and evaluate time-dependent phase characteristics from them. The effects of decoherence induced by spontaneous decay and collisional dephasing are also examined. Additionally, we present the technique of Fractional Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (F-STIRAP) and demonstrate that it can be utilized for remote detection in a multi-level system by creation of a maximally coherent superposition state.

The Ruderman--Kittel--Kasuya--Yosida (RKKY) interaction governs the coupling between localized spins and is strongly affected by the environment in which these spins reside. In superconductors, this interaction becomes long-ranged and provides information about the orbital symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. In this work, we consider the RKKY interaction between localized spins mediated by $p$-wave triplet superconductors. In contrast to the well-studied RKKY interaction in $d$-wave superconductors, we find that the spin of the Cooper pair in a triplet state also modulates the spin--spin coupling. We consider several different types of $p$-wave triplet states, and find that the form of the RKKY interaction changes significantly with the symmetries of the order parameter. For non-unitary superconducting states, two new terms appear in the RKKY interaction: a background spin magnetization coupling to the individual spins and, more interestingly, an effective Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya term. The latter term oscillates with the separation distance between the impurity spins. Finally, we find that the finite spin expectation value in non-unitary superconductors in concert with the conventional RKKY interaction can lead to non-collinear magnetic ground states even when the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya term is negligible. The RKKY interaction in $p$-wave triplet superconductors thus offers a way to achieve new ground state spin configurations of impurity spins and simultaneously provides information about the underlying superconducting state., Comment: 21 pages (including 10 figures, 4 appendices, and references)

Mirrorless lasing has been a topic of particular interest for about a decade due to promising new horizons for quantum science and applications. In this work, we review first-principles theory that describes this phenomenon, and discuss degenerate mirrorless lasing in a vapor of Rb atoms, the mechanisms of amplification of light generated in the medium with population inversion between magnetic sublevels within the $D_2$ line, and challenges associated with experimental realization.
