Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to apply local grammar (LG) to develop an indexing system which automatically extracts keywords from titles of Lebanese official journals. Design/methodology/approach: To build LG for our system, the first word that plays the determinant role in understanding the meaning of a title is analyzed and grouped as the initial state. These steps are repeated recursively for the whole words. As a new title is introduced, the first word determines which LG should be applied to suggest or generate further potential keywords based on a set of features calculated for each node of a title. Findings: The overall performance of our system is 67 per cent, which means that 67 per cent of the keywords extracted manually have been extracted by our system. This empirical result shows the validity of this study's approach after taking into consideration the below-mentioned limitations. Research limitations/implications: The system has two limitations. First, it is applied to a sample of 5,747 titles and it can be developed to generate all finite state automata for all titles. The other limitation is that named entities are not processed due to their varieties that require specific ontology. Originality/value: Almost all keyword extraction systems apply statistical, linguistic or hybrid approaches to extract keywords from texts. This paper contributes to the development of an automatic indexing system to replace the expensive human indexing by taking advantages of LG, which is mainly applied to extract time, date and proper names from texts.

Introduction: Suicidal Ideation (SI) is common in adolescents and increases the risk of completed suicide. Few brief interventions have been shown to reduce SI in adolescents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a novel brief group intervention, building resilience and attachment in vulnerable adolescents (BRAVA), designed for adolescents and their caregivers to reduce adolescent SI. Methods: The study was a pre–post, noncontrolled trial in which 46 adolescents were enrolled in the BRAVA intervention. Adolescents and caregivers completed an intake assessment, six BRAVA group sessions, and an exit assessment 1‐week post‐BRAVA. Results: Adolescents' SI decreased significantly after completing the BRAVA treatment (pre–post difference = 18.1, 95% CI = 10.01–26.12). Significant improvements in associated symptoms of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were also observed. Caregivers had reduced perceived stress (pre–post difference = 2.7, 95% CI = 0.30–5.16) and reduction in attachment avoidance (difference = 1.6, 95% CI = 0.29–2.91). Treatment satisfaction was high across the six modules. The rolling entry feature of the intervention allowed participants to begin treatment approximately 2 weeks sooner compared to waiting for the next group cycle. Conclusions: Study results demonstrate that the BRAVA intervention has the potential to reduce SI among adolescents who present to hospital services in crisis. Background: Child maltreatment is prevalent in Canadian society, and medical professionals are frequently required to provide care in these cases. Physician knowledge and training in child protection have been questioned. This study examined the experience, perceived adequacy of training, and perceived competency of Canadian pediatric residents in child protection. Methods: Structured questionnaires were sent to child protection program directors (CPPDs), pediatric program directors (PPDs) and pediatric residents at the 16 Canadian pediatric academic centers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, [chi square]-analyses, a Mann-Whitney test, and linear regression. Results: Responses were obtained from 15 of 16 CPPDs, all 16 PPDs, and 190 of 348 (54.6%) residents. All programs provided didactic teaching sessions. Only 3 programs had mandatory clinical rotations, 9 programs offered clinical electives, and 7 programs did not offer any specific clinical experience in child protection. Half of the residents had seen 5 or fewer cases of maltreatment. Residents and program directors most commonly rated the training as 'somewhat adequate, needs improvement' with a significant minority rating it as 'poor, inadequate.' Residents' self-rating of competency was positively associated with number of years of training and number of cases of maltreatment seen. Almost all residents (92%) felt that they needed further training in child protection, including 85% of graduating residents. Some of the residents (16.4%) did not anticipate dealing with child protection cases as practicing pediatricians. Conclusions: Canadian pediatric residents receive little exposure and limited training in child abuse and neglect. As a result, even senior pediatric residents feel poorly trained. These results highlight the need to establish effective training programs for residents in child protection. Keywords: Child protection; Abuse; Resident training; Medical education

The Ontario Government funded the development and implementation of a standardized adult emergency department (ED) asthma care pathway (EDACP). We aimed to describe baseline patterns of ED use by adults for asthma in Ontario, Canada, and determine site characteristics associated with the EDACP implementation workshop attendance and subsequent pathway implementation. All Ontario EDs were offered EDACP implementation workshops by the Lung Assocation-Ontario between 2008 and 2011, and were surveyed regarding site implementation status as of October, 2013. Survey data were linked by site to Ontario's administrative health databases. Logistic regression models investigated the association between site and patient characteristics and: a) workshop attendance; b) pathway implementation. In the 2 years prior to EDACP implementation, there were 41 143 asthma visits to 167 sites by adults (62.3% female). Asthma-related return visits within 72 h varied by hospital type (teaching 2.1%, community 2.8%, small 4.0%; p < 0.05). Implementation workshops were attended by staff from 122 sites (72.6%). Implementation status was known for 108 sites and varied by hospital type (p < 0.001), but not workshop attendance (p = 0.11). By 2013, 47% of all hospitals were using or planning to use the EDACP. Uptake was more likely in community hospitals. Ontario adult asthma ED visitors are more often women. Asthma-related return visits are uncommon, but significantly higher in small community hospitals. This provincial QI initiative reached almost 75% of Ontario EDs, and achieved almost 50% implementation rate within 2 years. Background: Competency-based medical education (CBME) involves workplace-based assessment. In pediatrics, patients' parents can participate in this assessment and generate feedback for residents. Prior to routinely collecting parent feedback, it is important to investigate residents' perspectives on it. Aim: To explore residents' reactions to and use of written parent feedback. Methods: Using a grounded theory approach, we interviewed residents who received written parent feedback at the mid- and end-points of a pediatric emergency training rotation. Results: Twenty-five residents participated. The residents reacted positively to the feedback. They thought that it complements educators' feedback, can elucidate parents' perspectives and needs, and is something that residents want and need. Although the residents thought that non-specific negative parent feedback is not useful, they believed non-specific positive and constructive parent feedback to be encouraging and useful. They delineated how they use non-specific positive parent feedback to boost their self-confidence and reassure themselves that parents perceive their clinical practices as appropriate. They also elucidated how they use constructive parent feedback to understand what is important to parents, become aware of their own behaviors, and modify their clinical practices. Conclusions: The findings encourage educators in pediatrics to include parents in resident assessment, especially in the CBME era. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
