This master's thesis studies data center cooling. The aim of this thesis is to discover the most energy efficient and cost effective cooling solutions for data centers. In addition, the optimal air temperature for data centers, profitability of heat recovery and the influence of geographical location on data center energy consumption are investigated. The results shown in this thesis are based on computational examinations that are executed by self-made computer program. Computer program is capable of accomplishing energy simulation tasks and optimization problems with several variables. The optimization variables are the temperatures of cold aisle, chilled water supply and the liquid (water ethylene glycol) used for free cooling as well as the size of free cooling plate heat exchanger and the count of computer room air handling (CRAH) units. Optimization allowed the discovering of energy efficient and cost effective cooling solutions. The results show, that chiller-less sea water cooling is the most energy efficient and cost effective cooling solution studied in this thesis. However, the chiller and refrigeration based cooling systems can also be very energy efficient if the system is optimized and the cooling system temperatures are allowed to change dynamically. The results show, that in Finland, dynamical chiller based cooling systems can utilize free cooling over 80 % of time. Optimization significantly decreased the energy consumption of the cooling systems compared to the standard non-optimized design. The cold aisle temperature has an energy impact on both, the performance of the cooling system and IT equipment. The optimal temperature range can be found where the combined IT load and cooling system energy consumption is minimized. The results show, that in stationary cases and in cold climates the optimal cold aisle temperature is only 20 23°C. Hot aisle temperature is at least important as the cold aisle temperature. Tutkimuksen ensisijaisena tavoitteena on löytää annetuista järjestelmävaihtoehdoista teknis-taloudellisesti paras tapa tuottaa palvelinkeskuksen jäähdytykseen tarvittava kylmäenergia. Lisäksi tutkitaan jäähdytysilman (kylmäkäytävä) optimaalista lämpötilaa, lämmöntaiteenoton kannattavuutta sekä maantieteellisen sijainnin vaikutusta palvelinkeskuksen energiankulutukseen. Opinnäytetyössä esitetyt tutkimustulokset perustuvat laskennallisiin tarkasteluihin, jotka on tehty itse koodatun tietokoneohjelman avulla. Tietokoneohjelmassa yhdistyvät energiasimulointi ja optimointi. Optimoinnin päätösmuuttujina ovat jäähdytysilman, jäähdytysveden sekä vapaajäähdytystilanteessa nestejäähdyttimeltä lähtevän liuoksen lämpötilat. Näiden lisäksi optimoidaan vapaajäähdytyksessä käytettävän levylämmönsiirtimen kokoa sekä vakioilmastointikoneiden lukumäärää. Optimointi mahdollisti energia- ja kustannustehokkaiden ratkaisujen löytymisen. Saatujen tulosten perusteella merivesijäähdytys on tässä tutkimuksessa vertailluista vaihtoehdoista energia- ja kustannustehokkain tapa toteuttaa suuren palvelinkeskuksen jäähdytys. Myös vapaajäähdytystä hyödyntävät vedenjäähdytyskoneistot voivat olla hyvin energiatehokkaita, jos niiden toiminta on optimoitu ja järjestelmän lämpötilojen sallitaan muuttuvan dynaamisesti. Opinnäytetyössä saatujen tulosten perusteella dynaamisesti toimivat jäähdytysjärjestelmät voivat hyödyntää vapaajäähdytystä parhaimmillaan jopa yli 80 % vuoden tunneista. Optimointi vähensi huomattavasti kaikkien vertailuun osallistuneiden jäähdytysjärjestelmien energiankulutusta verrattuna järjestelmäkohtaiseen perusratkaisuun. Jos jäähdytysilman lämpötilaa halutaan nostaa, tulee aina huomioida toimenpiteen vaikutus myös palvelimien ja vakioilmastointikoneiden energiankulutukseen.
