IntroductionThe mutated in colorectal cancer (MCC) gene was initially identified as a candidate tumor suppressor gene in colorectal cancer, acting as a negative regulator of cell cycle progression. However, its functional roles in brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma, remain largely unexplored. This study reveals a significant association between MCC status and glioblastoma.MethodsWe explored MCC expression in the glioblastoma database, patient samples, and cell lines. We investigated the proliferation and migration of the cell lines in MCC gene knockdown using small interfering RNA.ResultsIn vitro analyses revealed elevated protein and mRNA levels of MCC in several glioblastoma cell lines (U118MG and T98G). Silencing MCC expression via siRNA-mediated knockdown resulted in increased proliferation and migration of these cell lines. Supporting these findings, analyses of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA), and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases confirmed higher MCC expression in glioblastoma tumors than in normal brain tissue. Importantly, we observed that high MCC expression was associated with poor prognosis in glioblastoma patients, highlighting its potential role in disease progression. Additionally, this study identifies a nuclear localization of MCC in the glioblastoma cell line.DiscussionThese findings indicate that MCC expression is significantly upregulated in glioblastoma and may play a role in its pathophysiology, warranting further investigation.

Abstract Neuromorphic computing offers energy‐efficient computations for large‐scale data processing compared to conventional von Neumann computing. The artificial synapse, a key element for learning and memory operations in neuromorphic computing, requires multi‐state characteristics and the capability to change and store its states. The implementation of hardware‐based artificial synapses using nonvolatile memory provides significant advantages in terms of energy consumption and circuit area compared to their currently employed CMOS‐based counterparts. In this regard, spintronic devices have emerged as a promising candidate due to their desirable properties for artificial synapses, including multilevel formability, non‐volatility, and outstanding writing performance. In this study, spintronic artificial synapses utilizing voltage‐controlled multilevel magnetic states and energy‐ and area‐efficient artificial neural network architectures associated with them are demonstrated. The multilevel states are created by gradually modulating the magnetic easy‐axis orientation from perpendicular to in‐plane and vice versa, which is achieved either by sequentially applying gate voltage pulses or by adjusting the pulse width of the gate voltage. Based on these spintronic artificial synapses, convolutional neural network (CNN) and spiking neural network (SNN) architectures are constructed, demonstrating high recognition accuracy for the MNIST dataset with improved energy efficiency and a reduced circuit area.

Recently, the accuracy of spike neural network (SNN) has been significantly improved by deploying convolutional neural networks (CNN) and their parameters to SNN. The deep convolutional SNNs, however, suffer from large amounts of computations, which is the major bottleneck for energy efficient SNN processor design. In this paper, we present an input-dependent computation reduction approach, where relatively unimportant neurons are identified and pruned without seriously sacrificing the accuracies. Specifically, a neuron pruning in temporal domain is proposed that prunes less important neurons and skips its future operations based on the layer-wise pruning thresholds of membrane voltages. To find the pruning thresholds, two pruning threshold search algorithms are presented that can efficiently trade-off accuracy and computational complexity with a given computation reduction ratio. The proposed neuron pruning scheme has been implemented using 65 nm CMOS process. The SNN processor achieves a 57% energy reduction and a 2.68× speed up, with up to 0.82% accuracy loss and 7.3% area overhead for CIFAR-10 dataset.

Daphne pseudomezereum A. Gray var. koreana (Nakai) Hamaya is a shrub distributed in high mountains in Japan and Korea and is used as a medicinal plant. The complete chloroplast genome of D. pseudomezereum var. koreana is 171,152 bp long with four subregions consisting of a large single-copy region (84,963 bp), a small single-copy region (41,725 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (2739 bp). The genome includes 139 genes (93 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 38 tRNAs). Phylogenetic analyses show that D. pseudomezereum var. koreana is nested within the Daphne clade in the narrow sense and that it forms a distinct lineage.

Abstract Background Public reporting has been considered effective in reducing health care costs by mitigating information asymmetry in the market as payers have incorporated publicly available information mandates into pay-for-performance programs and value-based purchasing. Therefore, hospitals have faced increasing pressures to provide price transparency. Despite the widespread promotion of healthcare transparency, the effectiveness of public reporting has not yet been sufficiently understood. This study analyzed the impact of transparency policy and competition on hospital costs by taking the state operations of all-payer claims databases (APCDs) as a case of interest. Methods We employed a fixed-effects regression, which allows the generation of hospital-specific effects, in accordance with the suggestion by the Hausman test. The study samples comprise nonprofit and for-profit general acute care hospitals in the United States for 2011–2017. The finalized dataset ranges from 3547 observations in 2011 to 3405 observations in 2015 after removing missing values. Results We found that hospitals in the states with APCDs tend to bear higher average operating expenses than those without APCDs, which may indicate that states maintaining higher healthcare expenditures are more attentive to a price transparency initiative and tend to adopt APCDs. With regard to competition, the results showed that weak market competition is significantly associated with higher operating costs, supporting the traditional competition theory. However, the combined effect of APCDs and competition did not indicate a significant association with operating expenses. Further investigation showed a continued tendency for a weak intensity of competition to be linked to lower hospital operating costs in states without APCDs. For those located in non-APCD adopted states, market consolidation helped hospitals coordinate care more effectively, economize operating costs, and enjoy economies of scale due to their large size. Similar trends did not appear in APCD-adopted states except for in 2015. Conclusions This study observed limited evidence of the impact of APCDs and market competition. Our findings suggest that states need to make multifaceted efforts to contain hospital costs, not solely depending on the rollout of cost information or market competition. Market concentration may lead to coordinated care or cost economization in some cases. Still, the existing literature also demonstrates some potentially harmful impacts of increased concentration in the healthcare market, such as inefficient use of resources, unilateral market power, and deterrence of innovation. The introduction of a price transparency tool may require additional policy actions that take market competition into consideration.

Background: In addition to its use as a health food, ginseng is used in cosmetics and shampoo because of its extensive health benefits. The ginsenoside, Rh2, is a component of ginseng that inhibits tumor cell proliferation and differentiation, promotes insulin secretion, improves insulin sensitivity, and shows antioxidant effects. Methods: The effects of Rh2 on cell survival, extracellular matrix (ECM) protein expression, and cell differentiation were examined. The antioxidant effects of Rh2 in UV-irradiated normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells were also examined. The effects of Rh2 on mitochondrial function, morphology, and mitophagy were investigated in UV-irradiated NHDF cells. Results: Rh2 treatment promoted the proliferation of NHDF cells. Additionally, Rh2 increased the expression levels of ECM proteins and growth-associated immediate-early genes in ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated NHDF cells. Rh2 also affected antioxidant protein expression and increased total antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, treatment with Rh2 ameliorated the changes in mitochondrial morphology, induced the recovery of mitochondrial function, and inhibited the initiation of mitophagy in UV-irradiated NHDF cells. Conclusion: Rh2 inhibits mitophagy and reinstates mitochondrial ATP production and membrane potential in NHDF cells damaged by UV exposure, leading to the recovery of ECM, cell proliferation, and antioxidant capacity.

Abstract Physically unclonable functions (PUFs) are used for various applications such as anticounterfeiting, authentication, and secret key generation. They are generally evaluated through electrical measurements, requiring much time and effort due to the many electrical connections required. This study proposes an optical verification of spin‐orbit torque (SOT) devices for PUF design. SOT devices have gained much attention because they resist degradation and thermal changes and can generate secret keys with high reproducibility. A simple optical method based on the magneto‐optical Kerr effect is introduced to verify the authenticity of the proposed SOT PUF device. Furthermore, this study assesses the feasibility of using a W/CoFeB/MgO/Ta structure as a PUF. The 24‐bit device shows a reliability of 97.8 ± 1.03%, making it a promising candidate for use as a spintronics‐based PUFs.

Abstract With an increasing demand for artificial intelligence, the emulation of the human brain in neuromorphic computing has led to an extraordinary result in not only simulating synaptic dynamics but also reducing complex circuitry systems and algorithms. In this work, an artificial electronic synaptic device based on a synthesized MoS2 memristor array (4 × 4) is demonstrated; the device can emulate synaptic behavior with the simulation of deep neural network (DNN) learning. MoS2 film is directly synthesized onto a patterned bottom electrode (Pt) with high crystallinity using sputtering and CVD. The proposed MoS2 memristor exhibits excellent memory operations in terms of endurance (up to 500 sweep cycles) and retention (~ 104) with a highly uniform memory performance of crossbar array (4 × 4) up to 16 memristors on a scalable level. Next, the proposed MoS2 memristor is utilized as a synaptic device that demonstrates close linear and clear synaptic functions in terms of potentiation and depression. When providing consecutive multilevel pulses with a defined time width, long-term and short-term memory dynamics are obtained. In addition, an emulation of the artificial neural network of the presented synaptic device showed 98.55% recognition accuracy, which is 1% less than that of software-based neural network emulations. Thus, this work provides an enormous step toward a neural network with a high recognition accuracy rate.

Abstract The selective autophagy of damaged mitochondria is called mitophagy. Mitochondrial dysfunction, mitophagy, and apoptosis have been suggested to be interrelated in various human lung carcinomas. Leucine zipper EF-hand-containing transmembrane protein-1 (LETM1) was cloned in an attempt to identify candidate genes for Wolf–Hirschhorn syndrome. LETM1 plays a role in mitochondrial morphology, ion homeostasis, and cell viability. LETM1 has also been shown to be overexpressed in different human cancer tissues, including lung cancer. In the current study, we have provided clear evidence that LETM1 acts as an anchoring protein for the mitochondria-associated ER membrane (MAM). Fragmented mitochondria have been found in lung cancer cells with LETM1 overexpression. In addition, a reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and significant accumulation of microtubule-associated protein 1 A/1B-light chain 3 punctate, which localizes with Red-Mito, was found in LETM1-overexpressed cells, suggesting that mitophagy is upregulated in these cells. Interestingly, glucose-regulated protein 78 kDa (GRP78; an ER chaperon protein) and glucose-regulated protein 75 kDa (GRP75) were posited to interact with LETM1 in the immunoprecipitated LETM1 of H460 cells. This interaction was enhanced in cells treated with carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, a chemical mitophagy inducer. Treatment of cells with honokiol (a GRP78 inhibitor) blocked LETM1-mediated mitophagy, and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated GRP75 knockout inhibited LETM1-induced autophagy. Thus, GRP78 interacts with LETM1. Taken together, these observations support the notion that the complex formation of LETM1/GRP75/GRP78 might be an important step in MAM formation and mitophagy, thus regulating mitochondrial quality control in lung cancer.

Abstract Physical unclonable functions (PUFs), which exploit uncontrollable and unpredictable randomness of materials or devices, have been investigated as a hardware‐based security primitive owing to their robustness against adversarial attacks. Spin–orbit torque (SOT) switching is one of the promising techniques for PUF applications because it can provide randomness by the stochastic switching distribution of perpendicular magnetization. In this study, the improvement in the reliability of SOT‐based PUFs against external magnetic fields with write‐back operation (WBO) is demonstrated. A PUF consisting of 8 × 4 array Hall‐bar devices with a Ta/CoFeB/MgO structure is fabricated, where the random distribution of the SOT switching current serves as an entropy source. However, the information stored in the PUF is easily modified by the application of an external magnetic field. To improve the robustness against magnetic fields, a WBO is introduced that applies an additional current to saturate the magnetization in either the upward or downward direction depending on the magnetic state. As a result, the SOT‐based PUF maintains an entropy value close to unity under a magnetic field of up to the coercive field of the CoFeB layer. Furthermore, the WBO provides a digitalized output, which potentially reduces peripheral circuitry such as analog‐to‐digital converters.

Mitochondrial methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MARS2) canonically mediates the formation of fMet-tRNAifMet for mitochondrial translation initiation. Mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) is a major gate of Ca2+ flux from cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix. We found that MARS2 interacts with MCU and stimulates mitochondrial Ca2+ influx. Methionine binding to MARS2 would act as a molecular switch that regulates MARS2-MCU interaction. Endogenous knockdown of MARS2 attenuates mitochondrial Ca2+ influx and induces p53 upregulation through the Ca2+-dependent CaMKII/CREB signaling. Subsequently, metabolic rewiring from glycolysis into pentose phosphate pathway is triggered and cellular reactive oxygen species level decreases. This metabolic switch induces inhibition of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) via cellular redox regulation. Expression of MARS2 is regulated by ZEB1 transcription factor in response to Wnt signaling. Our results suggest the mechanisms of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake and metabolic control of cancer that are exerted by the key factors of the mitochondrial translational machinery and Ca2+ homeostasis.

A major challenge for spin based electronics is the electrical control of magnetization. Here, Kang et al demonstrate how electric field control of the Rashba effect in a Pt/Co/AlOx can enable control of the spin-orbit torque and allow for field free switching of the magnetization.

We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of Aclees taiwanensis collected in Korea. The circular mitogenome of A. taiwanensis is 17,435 bp, longer than that of Aclees cribratus, and includes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a control region/D-loop. The AT ratio is 75.4%. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenetic trees showed that A. taiwanensis was clustered with A. cribratus with full-support values for both trees.

Utricularia tenuicaulis Miki 1935 is an aquatic carnivorous plant species found in East Asia including Korea and Japan. In this study, the chloroplast genome of U. tenuicaulis was successfully sequenced. The assembled genome (153,976 bp; GC ratio, 37.0%) contains four subregions, with the large single copy (LSC; 84,596 bp; 34.9%) and small single copy (SSC; 17,946 bp; 30.5%) regions separated by 25,718 bp of inverted repeat regions (42.7%), and includes 126 genes (81 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). Phylogenetic analyses based on the whole-chloroplast genomes of 18 species, including 17 Lentibulariaceae species and one outgroup species, suggest a close relationship between U. tenuicaulis and Utricularia macrorhiza Leconte 1824. A comparison of genomic variation between U. tenuicaulis and U. macrorhiza confirmed the validity of the specific discrimination of U. tenuicaulis.

Atriplex gmelinii C. A. Mey. Ex Bong._1838 is an annual halophytic herb found in East Asia and North America. The chloroplast genome of A. gmelinii was successfully sequenced. The assembled genome (151,852 bp; GC ratio, 37.3%) is composed of four subregions, with the large single copy (LSC; 83,872 bp; 35.4%) and small single copy (SSC; 17,812 bp; 30.9%) regions separated by two regions of inverted repeat regions (25,084 bp; 42.8%). A total of 130 genes were predicted with 85 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs. The phylogenetic analyses inferred from whole chloroplast genomes of 35 species, including 34 species in Amaranthaceae and one outgroup species, suggest a close relationship between A. gmelinii and A. centralasiatica.

Abstract GATA transcription factors (TFs) are widespread eukaryotic regulators whose DNA-binding domain is a class IV zinc finger motif (CX2CX17–20CX2C) followed by a basic region. We identified 262 GATA genes (389 GATA TFs) from seven Populus genomes using the pipeline of GATA-TFDB. Alternative splicing forms of Populus GATA genes exhibit dynamics of GATA gene structures including partial or full loss of GATA domain and additional domains. Subfamily III of Populus GATA genes display lack CCT and/or TIFY domains. 21 Populus GATA gene clusters (PCs) were defined in the phylogenetic tree of GATA domains, suggesting the possibility of subfunctionalization and neofunctionalization. Expression analysis of Populus GATA genes identified the five PCs displaying tissue-specific expression, providing the clues of their biological functions. Amino acid patterns of Populus GATA motifs display well conserved manner of Populus GATA genes. The five Populus GATA genes were predicted as membrane-bound GATA TFs. Biased chromosomal distributions of GATA genes of three Populus species. Our comparative analysis approaches of the Populus GATA genes will be a cornerstone to understand various plant TF characteristics including evolutionary insights.

We have sequenced mitochondrial genome of Uroleucon erigeronense (Thomas, 1878) isolated from Erigeron canadensis in Korea. The circular mitogenome of U. erigeronense is 15,691 bp long including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single control region of 968 bp. AT ratio is 84.2%. Additional phylogenetic studies of aphid mitogenomes are required due to the inconsistency found in the three phylogenetic trees.

Climate services for agriculture (agrometeorological services) are only possible through collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts. To this end, a national-scale service operated by centralized governments will mandate institutional coordination for data sharing, in addition to designated staff time and budget commitments for effective and sustainable operation; however, previous efforts have revealed that institutional coordination, particularly between meteorology and agriculture, represents the most difficult part preventing successful implementation in most countries. In this study, we examined the use of a top-down, information and communication technology (ICT)-based multidisciplinary platform for agrometeorological services for facilitating institutional coordination and ensuring project sustainability. The Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information Systems (SAMIS) project, operational since 2018, focuses on building the adaptive capacity of agrometeorological services in Laos by combining the agricultural and meteorological sectors. The research here utilized the ICT-based service platform Laos Climate Services for Agriculture (LaCSA) to systematically engage relevant institutional partners in the co-creation process of agrometeorological services. The results showed that LaCSA enabled co-creation, including data sharing, collaborative tool use, institutional coordination, and policy support from multiple government entities across the agricultural and meteorological sectors. Key lessons and suggestions included co-training for both sectors, easy-to-use data management processes, early buy-in for policy makers, and creating standard operating procedures designating staff time and budgets. These results indicate that the coordinated operation of agrometeorological services through an ICT-based service platform can be successfully achieved in Laos as well as other developing countries, where institutional disconnects and human capital constraints hinder successful implementation of agrometeorological services.

Castanopsis sieboldii (Makino) Hatus is an evergreen tree that distributes in Eastern Asia including Islands of Korea and Japan. The chloroplast genome of C. sieboldii was successfully sequenced. Its length is 160,705 bp long (GC ratio is 36.8%) and has four subregions: 90,821 bp of large single copy (34.6%) and 19,014 bp of small single copy (30.8%) regions are separated by 25,075 bp of inverted repeat (42.8%) regions including 134 genes (89 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). Interspecific variations of Castanopsis are at a moderate level in comparison to those of the other genera. Phylogenetic trees show that C. sieboldii chloroplast genome was clustered with the other two Castanopsis species.

We have determined the mitochondrial genome of A. gossypii isolated from Leonurus japonicus in Korea. The circular mitogenome of A. gossypii is 16,044 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single control region of 797 bp. AT ratio is 83.8%. 88 SNPs and 4 INDELs (175 bp) were identified against mitogenome of A. gossypii isolated from cotton species. Especially, largest INDEL (170 bp) was in the control region. Phylogenetic trees show that four A. gossypii mitogenomes were clustered in one clade.

We have determined the complete chloroplast genome of Chrysanthemum zawadskii Herbich isolated in Korea. The circular chloroplast genome of C. zawadskii is 151,137 bp long and has four subregions: 83,041 bp of large single copy and 18,350 bp of small single copy regions are separated by 24,873 bp of inverted repeat regions including 133 genes (87 protein-coding genes, eight rRNA genes, 37 tRNAs, and one pseudogene). There are 65 to 152 single nucleotide polymorphisms and 33 to 64 insertion and deletion regions (178 bp to 372 bp in length) identified against three available chloroplast genomes of C. zawadskii. The phylogenetic tree shows that C. zawadskii is clustered as a paraphyletic group with C. zawadskii subsp. coreanum, displaying incongruency between species and clades.

We presented a complete chloroplast genome of a new species candidate of Plantago depressa, Willd. named as Plantago wonjuenesis sp. nov, which is 164,946 bp long (GC ratio is 38.0%) and has four subregions: 82,985 bp of large single copy and 4,647 bp of small single-copy regions are separated by 38,657 bp of inverted repeat regions including 94 protein-coding genes (PCGs), eight rRNAs, and 38 tRNAs. Number of variations between P. wonjuenesis and P. depressa can be considered as interspecific variations. Bootstrapped phylogenetic trees constructed with conserved 78 PCGs of eleven Plantaginaceae chloroplast genomes present that P. wonjuensis is clustered with P. depressa, P. fengdouensis, and P. media.

The chloroplast genome of Abeliophyllum distichum f. lilacinum Nakai, classified to a monotypic in this genus, and an endemic species in Korea, was sequenced to understand the genetic differences among intraspecies and cultivars of A. distichum. The chloroplast genome length is 156,015 bp (GC ratio is 37.8%) and has a typical quadripartite structure: 86,779 bp large single copy (35.8%) and 17,828 bp small single copy (31.9%) regions separated by two 25,704 bp inverted repeat (43.2%) regions. The genome encodes for 133 genes (88 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). Six to 99 SNPs and seven to 18 INDEL regions (19 bp to 72 bp) were identified against available chloroplast genomes of A. distichum. Phylogenetic trees show that A. distichum f. lilacinum is clustered with the Dae Ryun cultivar which has a larger fruit body. Our analyses suggest additional research, such as Genotyping-By-Sequencing, for understanding relationship between morphology and genotype of A. distichum.

Scopulariopsis brevicaulis is a widely distributed soil fungus known as a common saprotroph of biodegradation. It is also an opportunistic human pathogen that can produce various secondary metabolites. Here, we report the first complete mitochondrial genome sequence of S. brevicaulis isolated from air in South Korea. Total length of the mitochondrial genome is 28,829 bp and encoded 42 genes (15 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, and 25 tRNAs). Nucleotide sequence of coding region takes over 26.2%, and overall GC content is 27.6%. Phylogenetic trees present that S. brevicaulis is clustered with Lomentospora prolificans with presenting various mitochondrial genome length.

In the hardware implementation of deep learning algorithms such as, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and binarized neural networks (BNNs), multiple dot products and memories for storing parameters take a significant portion of area and power consumption. In this paper, we propose a domain wall memory (DWM) based design of CNN and BNN convolutional layers. In the proposed design, the resistive cell sensing mechanism is efficiently exploited to design low-cost DWM-based cell arrays for storing parameters. The unique serial access mechanism and small footprint of DWM are also used to reduce the area and energy cost of DWM-based design for filter sliding. Simulation results with 65 nm CMOS process show 45% and 43% of energy savings compared to the conventional CNN and BNN design approach, respectively.

Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus is an economically important herb in the cold temperate regions of East Asia, and displays highly variable morphological features. Completed chloroplast genome of A. dioicus var. kamtschaticus isolated in Korea is 157,859 bp long with four subregions: 85,972 bp of large single copy and 19,185 bp of small single-copy regions separated by 26,351 bp of inverted repeat regions. The genome includes 131 genes (86 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). Phylogenetic analyses show that our chloroplast genome was clustered with two partial chloroplast genomes of A. dioicus.

The argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr, 1867), is an invasive ant species that has spread across the world. We have determined the mitochondrial genome of L. humile collected in South Korea, which is 15,934 bp containing 10 SNPs and 5 INDELs compared to the previous mitogenome. Most SNPs were found in cox3, followed by cytb. From SNPs our mitogenome was identified as a H3 haplotype, which was previously recorded in Japan and the U.S. while the previous mitogenome was H1 haplotype. Phylogenetic analysis was congruent to previous study within the tribe Leptomyrmecini but not between other tribes of subfamily Dolichoderinae.

Douinia plicata (Lindb.) Konstant. & Vilnet is the endemic species in Northeast Asia. Here, we reported complete mitochondrial genome of D. plicata. It is 144,206 bp long and includes 72 genes (42 protein-coding genes, three rRNAs, and 27 tRNAs). The overall GC content is 45.1%. Intergeneic variations against S. amplicata, which is slightly higher than intraspecific variations of S. ampliata and W. denudata. Phylogenetic trees show D. plicatum is clustered with three Scapania mitochondrial genomes with high supportive values, which is congruent with previous studies.

The genus Crematogaster is a diverse group of ants found around the world. We have completed the mitochondrial genome of Crematogaster teranishii, which is the first mitochondrial genome of the genus. The mitochondrial genome is 17,442 bp long and 20.3% in GC ratio, which is similar to those of other ants. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and a control region with same gene order to other myrmicine species. The intergenic region between nad3 and trnA was unusually long compared to other ant species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. teranishii was closely related to other members of tribe Crematogastrini.

Completed chloroplast genome of Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. isolated in Korea is 135,888 bp long (GC ratio is 38.4%) and has four subregions: 81,370 bp of large single copy (36.3%) and 12,594 bp of small single copy (32.7%) regions are separated by 20,962 bp of inverted repeat (44.1%) regions including 130 genes (83 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, 38 tRNAs, and one pseudogene). 28 SNPs and 57 INDELs were identified ss intraspecific variations against previously sequenced chloroplast genome. Phylogenetic trees show that Z. matrella and Z. tenuifolia (=Z. pacifica) are clustered in one clade with low level of variations on chloroplast genomes.

The genus Lasius is a conspicuous and popular genus of ants found in the Holarctic regions. We have completed the mitochondrial genome of Lasius spathepus as the first mitochondrial genome of Lasius. The mitochondrial genome is 18,951 bp long, which is the sixth longest ant mitochondrial genome known to science. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and a control region in a gene order shared with other species of subfamily Formicinae. The control region is 2,147 bp long, longest of all ants. Phylogenetic analysis shows L. spathepus groups with Nylanderia flavipes of the same tribe Lasiini.

Scapania ampliata Steph. is the endemic species in East Asia. To investigate intraspecific variations on mitochondrial genomes of S. ampliata, we completed mitochondrial genome of S. ampliata isolated in Korea. It is 143,664 bp long and contains 73 genes (41 protein-coding genes, three rRNAs, 28 tRNAs, and one pseudogene). 823 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; 0.057%) and 2,242 insertions and deletions were identified between two S. ampliata mitochondrial genomes, which is large number of intraspecific variations in comparison to the other cases of Bryophyte mitochondrial genomes. Phylogenetic trees show that S. ampliata is clustered with those of two Scapania species with high supportive values.

Completed chloroplast genome of Campanula takesimana Nakai isolated from Dokdo island in Korea is 169,719 bp long (GC ratio is 38.8%) and has four subregions: 102,381 bp of large single-copy (37.8%) and 7,750 bp of small single-copy (32.6%) regions are separated by 29,794 bp of inverted repeat (41.3%) regions including 131 genes (87 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 36 tRNAs). Phylogenetic analyses suggested that C. takesimana from Dokdo Island form a clade with C. takesimana from Ulleungdo Island and that chloroplast genomes of the two accessions are diverged.

We de novo assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, using its genomic DNA isolated from the bell pepper in Korea. The circular mitogenome of M. persicae is 16,936 bp long and contains the standard 37 genes: 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes, as well as a single control region of 798 bp. Given the high AT ratio (84.1%) of the M. persicae mitogenome, we found, through the comparison of the Chinese M. persicae mitogenomes, that approximately 1.6% of the mitogenome is polymorphic, including 30 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 12 insertions and deletions (INDELs), and large sequence variations in the control region. To resolve the phylogenetic position of M. persicae, we analyzed all mitochondrial protein-coding genes from 38 species within the Aphidoidea superfamily, with Adelges laricis as an outgroup. Our M. persicae sample was significantly grouped with three existing M. persicae samples, and the species belonging to the family Aphididae formed a monophyletic clade.

Colobopsis ants are unique ants known for their phragmotic behavior. We have completed the mitochondrial genome of Colobopsis nipponica (Wheeler, W.M., 1928) as the first mitochondrial genome of the genus. The mitogenome is 17,431 bp long and 19.4% in GC ratio, which is the third longest mitochondrial genome in subfamily Formicinae. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes and a large 1534 bp long control region. Both gene order and phylogenetic analysis agree with the recent elevation of Colobopsis from subgenus to genus.

We have determined the second mitochondrial genome of Epanerchodus koreanus Verhoeff, 1937 collected in limestone cave of Korea. The circular mitochondrial genome of E. koreanus is 15,581 bp long. It includes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. Its gene order was different from the rest three Polydesmida mitochondrial genomes, resulted from relocation of tRNAs, rRNAs, and ND1. The base composition was AT-biased (75.1%). Phylogenetic trees displayed phylogenetic relationship, which is congruent to previous study, except Sphaerotheriidae sp. clustering with Helminthomorpha.

The mitogenome of Aspergillus flavus SRRC1009 was sequenced to investigate intraspecific variations on mitochondrial genomes of A. flavus. It shows 29,202 bp with a typical configuration of Aspergillus mitogenome. Sixteen SNPs and 22 INDELs and 17 SNPs and 27 INDELs were identified against AflaGuard® and JQ355000, respectively. Phylogenetic trees present in the three A. flavus mitochondrial genomes were clustered with A. oryzae mitochondrial genome in one clade.

The complete chloroplast genome of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. isolated in Korea is 155,125 bp long (GC ratio is 36.9%) and has four subregions: 84,458 bp of large single copy (34.9%) and 18,737 bp of small single copy (30.4%) regions are separated by 25,965 bp of inverted repeat (42.6%) regions including 129 genes (84 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). 258 SNPs and 542 INDELs were identified as intraspecific variations against the partial genome (KY419942). Phylogenetic trees show that our chloroplast genome was clustered with the previous A. pilosa chloroplast genome.

Cervus canadensis nannodes (Merriam, 1905) is one of the subspecies of elk distributed only in California, USA. We completed the first mitogenome of C. canadensis nannodes. Its length is 16,428 bp, which is in middle among 24 available Cervus mitogenomes. It contains 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs). Phylogenetic trees show that C. c. nannodes was clustered with some subspecies of C. elaphus. Number of inter-subspecific variations between C. c. nannodes and C. e. alxaicus are relatively small in comparison to intraspecific variations of insect and fish mitogenomes and plant chloroplast genomes.

Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer, 1797 is a major pest in poultry production and easily observed in poultry litter. We have determined mitochondrial genome of A. diaperinus collected in Chungcheongbuk-do, Republic of Korea. The circular mitogenome of A. diaperinus is 15,511 bp long which is longer than that of Z. atratus but shorter than that of T. obscurus. It includes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNAs. The base composition was AT-biased (72.4%). Phylogenetic tree displays that tribe Alphitobiini is clustered with tribes Helopini and Diaperini with enough supportive values of three phylogenetic trees.

Cervus canadensis (Erxleben, 1777) has been used as a model species of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). We completed the mitochondrial genome of C. canadensis, susceptible to the CWD. Its length is 16,428 bp, identical to the previous mitochondrial genome of C. canadensis nannodes, and 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs) were identified. It may reflect the extreme decrease of tule elk population in 1870s and CWD is not related to genetic elements on mitochondrial genome. Phylogenetic trees show that our mitochondrial genome is clustered with the previously sequenced mitochondrial genome of C. canadensis nannodes .

We have determined mitochondrial genome of A. gossypii isolated from Plantago asiatica in Korea. The circular mitogenome of A. gossypii is 16,045 bp including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single control region of 798 bp. Its AT ratio is 83.8%. In comparison this mitogenome to Chinese and Korean A. gossypii mitogenomes, 66 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 176 insertions and deletions (INDELs) and 11 SNPs and 173 INDELs are identified, respectively, presenting similar level to those of Nilaparvata lugens, Laodelphax striatellus, and Spodoptera frugiperda and lower than that of Chilo suppresallis.

We completed chloroplast genome of Scapania ampliata Steph., presenting distinct morphological features including yellowish brown, one-celled gemmae, and decurrent dorsal lobe. It is 118,026 bp long and has four subregions: 80,850 bp of large single copy (LSC) and 19,436 bp of small single copy (SSC) regions are separated by 8,870 bp of inverted repeat (IR) regions including 130 genes (86 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNAs, and 36 transfer RNAs). The overall guanine cytosine (GC) content is 34.0% and those in the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 31.9%, 31.0%, and 46.3%, respectively. Phylogenetic trees show S. ampliata is clustered with Scapania ciliata.

We completed chloroplast genome of Wiesnerella denudata (Mitt.) Steph, only one species of the monotypic Wiesnerella genus and family Wiesnerellaceae Inoue. It is 122,500 bp and has four subregions: 82,143 bp of large single copy (LSC) and 20,009 bp of small single copy (SSC) regions are separated by 10,174 bp of inverted repeat (IR) regions including 132 genes (88 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 36 tRNAs). The overall GC content is 28.8% and those in the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 26.4, 24.6, and 42.8%, respectively. Phylogenetic trees show incongruencies of phylogenetic relationship of W. denudata, requiring additional research.

We have determined the second mitochondrial genome of Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer, 1797 collected in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. The circular mitogenome of A. diaperinus is 15,512 bp long which is slightly longer than that of the previous mitogenome of A. diaperinus. It includes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNAs. The base composition was AT-biased (72.4%). Intraspecific variation between two mitogenome of A. diaperinus was investigated: one SNP and one INDEL were identified, presenting the low level of intraspecific variations on mitochondrial genome.

Wiesnerella denudata (Mitt.) Steph. is a thallose liverwort distributed in Asian subtropical to tropical regions. It is the only one species in genus Wiesnerella and family Wiesnerellaceae. To investigate intraspecific variations on mitochondrial genomes of W. denudata, we completed mitochondrial genome of W. denudata. Its length is 185,640 bp, longer than that of the previously sequenced mitochondrial genome by 71 bp and contains 73 genes (41 protein-coding genes, 3 rRNAs, 28 tRNAs, and 1 pseudogene). A total of 149 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 3,033 insertions and deletions are identified, much higher than those of Marchantia polymorpha subsp. ruderalis and Riccia fluitans. Phylogenetic trees show that W. denudata is clustered with Monosolenium tenerum belonging to Monosoleniaceae.

Afla-Guard® is a commercial non-toxigenic Aspergillus flavus strain used to decrease aflatoxin contamination level in field. Its mitochondrial genome was sequenced, showing that its length is 29,208 bp with typical configuration of Aspergillus mitochondrial genome. 17 SNPs and 27 INDELs were identified by comparing with previous A. flavus mitochondrial genome. Phylogenetic trees present that A. flavus of Afla-Guard® was clustered with the previous A. flavus mitochondrial genome.

Completed mitochondrial genome of a new species candidate of Rosa rugosa, named as Rosa angusta, is 303,484 bp long. The overall GC content of this mitochondrial genome is 45.2%. It contains 52 genes covering 31 protein-coding genes, 17 tRNAs, and 3 rRNAs. In comparison to R. rugosa mitochondrial genome assembled from the public NGS raw reads, 124 SNPs and 769 INDELs were identified. Phylogenetic trees suggest that more Rosa mitochondrial genomes will be needed to understand phylogenetic relationship of the two Rosa species.

The complete chloroplast genome of Euscaphis japonica (Thunb.) Kanitz isolated in Korea is 160,606 bp long and has four subregions: 89,232 bp of large single-copy and 18,734 bp of small single-copy regions are separated by 26,320 bp of inverted repeat regions including 129 genes (84 CDS, 8 rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs) and three pseudogenes. There were 424 SNPs and 809 INDELs compared with the Chinese E. japonica, useful to develop markers for phylogeographic study of the species. Phylogenetic trees show that E. japonica, representing Crossosomatales, is nested within the Malvids clade, confirming previous studies.
