Muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) can be affected by muscle fiber geometry at different joint angles and during joint movements. This study aimed to investigate MFCV during electrically evoked contraction at different joint angles, during joint movements, and during voluntary contractions. Sixteen healthy young men participated. A stimulation electrode was attached on the innervation zone of the vastus lateralis, and a linear electrode array was attached on the vastus lateralis. Under a static condition, electrically evoked electromyography signals were recorded at knee joint angles set every 15° between 0° and 105°. Under a passive movement condition, signals were recorded during knee extension and flexion passively. Under a voluntary contraction condition, signals were recorded while performing 30% or 60% of maximum voluntary contraction. MFCV was calculated using cross-correlation coefficients. Under the static condition, there were no differences in MFCV among various joint angles. Under the passive movement condition, MFCV was significantly greater during high velocity or shortening. Under the voluntary contraction condition, MFCV was significantly greater during high-intensity voluntary contraction and with a shortened muscle length. Joint angles do not influence MFCV markedly during relaxation, but it is possible to overestimate MFCV during movement or voluntary contraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Executive Council of the International Society of Biomechanics has initiated and overseen the commemorations of the Society's 50th Anniversary in 2023. This included multiple series of lectures at the ninth World Congress of Biomechanics in 2022 and XXIXth Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics in 2023, all linked to special issues of International Society of Biomechanics' affiliated journals. This special issue of the Journal of Applied Biomechanics is dedicated to the biomechanics of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The reader is encouraged to explore this special issue which comprises 6 papers exploring the current state-of the-art, and future directions and roles for neuromusculoskeletal biomechanics. This editorial presents a very brief history of the science of the neuromusculoskeletal system's 4 main components: the central nervous system, musculotendon units, the musculoskeletal system, and joints, and how they biomechanically integrate to enable an understanding of the generation and control of human movement. To effectively evaluate the gross motor ability of autistic children, we proposed a method of computerised evaluation of gross motor skills (CEGM). The CEGM integrates Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method and OpenPose technology to automatically detect key joints and return a score. Ten items were selected for evaluation based on the gross motor subtest of the Psychoeducational Profile – Third Edition (PEP-3) scale, including upper limb movement, lower limb movement, and body coordination performance. 30 autistic participants (males: 23, female: 7) with an average age of 5.00 years were recruited in this study. Then we compared the results of evaluation using CEGM and the original PEP-3 gross motor subtest in autistic children. The results showed that in the evaluations using CEGM and PEP-3, Cronbach's α coefficients and Spearman-rank correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.80, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were all greater than 0.90, indicating good agreement in evaluating the gross motor ability of autistic children. Moreover, compared to the PEP-3, the evaluation using CEGM provided precise quantitative indicators (trajectory, velocity, and angle of joint). This scoping review aimed to identify and summarise evidence on the comfort and functional performance of police officer personal protective equipment (PPE). The Arksey and O'Malley (2005) five-stage framework for scoping reviews was followed. PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched, and 35 articles were included in the review. The findings show that increased police PPE mass increases heart rate, metabolic energy expenditure, and perceived exertion in response to exercise. Unisex armour designs cause increased discomfort for females with larger bra sizes. PPE reduces joint-specific range of motion, with the design and location impairing movement more than mass. Jumping and sprinting performance is decreased with heavy PPE but unaffected by lighter protection, while agility is compromised with most forms of protection. Future research is needed on the fit and function of PPE for specialist police units, such as mounted police, along with further investigations on how fit can affect functional performance. Purpose: To determine prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs) in adults with major congenital upper limb differences (CoULD) compared to able-bodied controls, and to examine associations of MSCs and disability with various biopsychosocial factors. Materials and methods: Questionnaire-based cross-sectional study assessing MSCs, disability (using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (DASH)), general and mental health status, physical work demands, and upper extremity range of motion. Results: Seventy-one individuals with CoULD (participation rate: 41%) and 71 controls matched on age, gender, and education were included (49% female, mean age 28.9 years). Year prevalence of MSCs was significantly higher in the CoULD group (35%) than in the control group (18%). The CoULD group was less often employed and had lower scores on all measures of upper limb range of motion and hand grip. MSCs were associated with higher DASH scores and higher reported work demands. Disability was associated with female gender, more joints with limited range of motion, unemployment, and lower general and mental health. Factors associated with disability did not differ between groups. Conclusions: MSCs are a frequent problem in young adults with major CoULD. To prevent or reduce MSC and disability, clinicians and researchers should be aware of the associated factors. Implications for rehabilitation: The year prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs) in those with major congenital upper limb differences (CoULD) was approximately double to that of the control group, implying a potential relationship between CoULD and MSCs. Rehabilitation professionals should develop personalized strategies to manage work demands in those with CoULD, considering the association between MSCs and higher reported work demands. Recognizing the impact of a negatively perceived body image on mental health, clinicians should integrate psychological counseling into rehabilitation treatments to support mental well-being and improve overall quality of life in those with CoULD. Introduction: Maximal acceleration and deceleration tasks are frequently required in team sports, often occurring rapidly in response to external stimuli. Accelerating and decelerating can be associated with lower limb injuries; thus, knowledge of joint mechanics during these tasks can improve the understanding of both human high performance and injury mechanisms. The current study investigated the fundamental differences in lower limb joint mechanics when accelerating and decelerating by directly comparing the hip, knee, and ankle joint moments and work done between the two tasks. Methods: Twenty participants performed maximal effort acceleration and deceleration trials, with three-dimensional marker trajectories and ground reaction forces collected simultaneously. Experimental data were combined with inverse dynamics analysis to compute joint moments and work. Results: Net joint work for all lower limb joints was positive during acceleration and negative during deceleration. This occurred because of significantly greater positive work production from the ankle and hip during acceleration and significantly greater negative work production from all joints during deceleration. The largest contributions to positive work during acceleration came from the ankle, followed by the hip and knee joints, whereas the largest contributions to negative work during deceleration came from the knee and hip joints, followed by the ankle. Peak joint moments were significantly greater when decelerating compared with accelerating, except for the peak ankle plantar flexion and hip flexion moments, which were significantly greater when accelerating. Conclusions: Our findings may help to guide training interventions, which aim to enhance the performance of acceleration and deceleration tasks, while also mitigating the associated injury risk. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the efficiency of mechanical energy flow in the torso and bat head speed at impact. Ninety-eight amateur baseball players batted a light ball tossed from the pitcher direction 3.2 m away. The batting motion and ground reaction forces acting on each foot were recorded using a motion capture system and two force plates, respectively. The mechanical powers of the joint forces and joint torques were calculated to measure the generation, absorption, and transfer of mechanical energy in the torso. The transfer efficiency of mechanical energy in the torso was defined as the ratio of the mechanical energy inflow into the thorax from the torso joint to the mechanical energy outflow from the pelvis to the torso joint. The correlation coefficient between the bat head speed and transfer efficiency of mechanical energy in the torso was very low. Conversely, the mechanical energy flow in the torso was significantly correlated to the bat head speed. Therefore, the results suggest that the torso in baseball batting is not utilised for the generation of mechanical energy but acts as a pathway for the transfer of mechanical energy. The functional importance of trunk muscle strength for running movement is widely recognised, but the kinematic effects of undertaking specific training are unclear. This study investigated the change in joint angle and its variability during running following trunk muscle training. Eighteen young female and novice runners participated. Using Plug-in-gait model with infrared markers attached to the body surface, the lower limb and lumber angles during running were measured, and the variability was examined by calculating the coefficient variation and Lyapunov exponent. Measurements of trunk endurance were also performed. Over four weeks of training, the subjects performed trunk muscle endurance trainings three times a week. Following this intervention, trunk endurance was found to have significantly increased. The Lyapunov exponent of lumbar flexion-extension angle also significantly increased. Moreover, a decreased range of the ankle angle and increased range of the hip angle were observed following the training. These results demonstrate that the trunk training promoted adjustments to lumbar movement and altered the movement patterns of the participants' lower limbs during running. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Fu's subcutaneous needling (FSN) is a new type of acupuncture that uses subcutaneous tissue to oscillate from side to side to improve muscle pathology status and can be effective in treating Knee osteoarthritis. Nonetheless, whether the clinical effect is similar to that of most commonly used drugs is unclear. Thus, this study aims to determine the pain-relieving effect and improvement in the joint function of the FSN therapy by comparing it with that of a positive control drug (celecoxib). Furthermore, this clinical trial also aims to evaluate the effect of FSN on gait and lower limb muscle flexibility, which can further explore the scientific mechanisms of the FSN therapy. Methods and analysis: This study is a randomized, parallel-controlled, single-center prospective clinical study that includes 60 participants, with an FSN group (n = 30) and a drug group (n = 30). The Fu's subcutaneous needling (FSN) group undergo the FSN therapy 3 times a week for 2 weeks, while the drug group receives 0.2 g/day oral celecoxib for 2 weeks, with a follow-up period of 4 weeks after the completion of treatment. The primary outcome is the difference in the visual analog scale score after 2 weeks of treatment compared with baseline. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index, joint active range of motion test, three-dimensional gait analysis, and shear wave elastic imaging technology analysis in lower limb muscles are also performed to demonstrate clinical efficacy. Ethics and dissemination: The trial is performed following the Declaration of Helsinki. The study protocol and consent form have been approved by the Ethics Committee of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine. "Super-shoes" are designed to improve endurance running performance by reducing the metabolic demands of running. Although the research on "super-shoes" is still developing and has mostly been studied in male runners, it is not clear how possible mediating factors, such as foot strike pattern, influence the metabolic cost and joint mechanics in competitive female runners. Purpose: The objective of this study is to assess the influence of "super-shoes" on metabolic cost and joint mechanics in competitive female runners and to understand how foot strike patter may influence the footwear effects. Methods: Eighteen competitive female runners ran four 5-min bouts on a force instrumented treadmill at 12.9 km⋅h-1 in 1) Nike Vaporfly Next% 2™(SUPER) and 2) Nike Pegasus 38™(CON) in a randomized and mirrored order. Results: Metabolic power was improved by 4.2% (P < 0.001; d = 0.43) and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) negative work (P < 0.001; d = 1.22), ankle negative work (P = 0.001; d = 0.67), and ankle positive work (P < 0.001; d = 0.97) were all smaller when running in SUPER compared with CON. There was no correlation between foot strike pattern and the between-shoe (CON to SUPER) percentage change for metabolic power (r = 0.093, P = 0.715). Conclusions: Metabolic power improved by 4.2% in "super-shoes" (but only by ~3.2% if controlling for shoe mass differences) in this cohort of competitive female runners, which is a smaller improvement than previously observed in men. The reduced mechanical demand at the MTP and ankle in "super-shoes" are consistent with previous literature and may explain or contribute to the metabolic improvements observed in "super-shoes"; however, foot strike pattern was not a moderating factor for the metabolic improvements of "super-shoes." Purpose: The aim was to quantify jump performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and determine if the expected deficit is related to their lower body joint kinetics and kinematics. Methods: Twenty-four ambulatory (n = 17 level I and 7 level II in the Gross Motor Function Classification System) children with spastic CP (n = 13 unilateral and 11 bilateral) and 24 age-, sex-, and race matched typically developing controls were studied. Jump height and peak power and range of motion at the hip, knee, and ankle of the more affected limb in children with CP and the nondominant limb in controls were assessed during a countermovement jump using three-dimensional motion capture and a force platform. Results: Compared with controls, children with CP had lower jump height (33%, Cohen's d (d) = 1.217), peak power at the knee (39%, d = 1.013) and ankle (46%, d = 1.687), and range of motion at the hip (32%, d = 1.180), knee (39%, d = 2.067), and ankle (46%, d = 3.195; all P < 0.001). Jump height was positively related to hip, knee, and ankle power and range of motion in children with CP (rs range = 0.474-0.613, P < 0.05), and hip and ankle power and knee and ankle range of motion in controls (rs range = 0.458-0.630, P < 0.05). The group difference in jump height was no longer detected when ankle joint power, ankle range of motion, or knee range of motion was statistically controlled (P > 0.15). Purpose: We aimed to examine the functional outcome in different walking conditions in elderly adults who underwent surgical repair after a non-contact hamstring injury. Our objective was to compare lower limb kinematics and kinetics over the entire gait cycle between the injured and contralateral leg in overground and level and uphill treadmill walking. Methods: 12 patients (mean ± SD, age: 65 ± 9 years; body mass index: 30 ± 6 kg/m2) walked at self-selected speed in overground (0% slope) and treadmill conditions (0% and 10% slope). We measured spatiotemporal parameters, joint angles (normalised to gait cycle) and joint moments (normalised to stance phase) of the hip, knee and ankle. Data between sides were compared using paired sample t -tests (p < 0.05) and continuous 95% confidence intervals of the paired difference between trajectories. Results: Patients walked at an average speed of 1.31 ± 0.26 m/second overground and 0.92 ± 0.31 m/second on the treadmill. Spatiotemporal parameters were comparable between the injured and contralateral leg (p > 0.05). Joint kinematic and joint kinetic trajectories were comparable between sides for all walking conditions. Conclusions: Refixation of the proximal hamstring tendons resulted in comparable ambulatory mechanics at least 1 year after surgery in the injured leg and the contralateral leg, which were all within the range of normative values reported in the literature. These results complement our previous findings on hamstring repair in terms of clinical outcomes and muscle strength and support that surgical repair achieves good functional outcomes in terms of ambulation in an elderly population. Background: Nonunion after ankle or hindfoot arthrodesis is associated with poor outcomes. Cellular bone allograft is an alternative to autograft for use in these procedures. The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the early efficacy and safety of cellular bone allograft use in hindfoot and ankle arthrodesis procedures. Methods: Fourteen patients undergoing hindfoot or ankle arthrodesis supplemented with cellular bone allograft were prospectively enrolled. Computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained postoperatively at set time points and reviewed by 3 fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeons as well as 1 musculoskeletal radiologist. Primary outcome was CT-verified union, defined as >25% of joint surface. Complications were recorded and revision procedures offered as indicated. Results: CT-verified union rate during the study period was 76.7% (23 of 30 joints). Union was 100% for the ankle joint (2 of 2), 50% for the talonavicular joint (5 of 10), 100% for the calcaneocuboid joint (8 of 8), and 80.0% for the subtalar joint (8 of 10). One patient underwent revision fusion procedure, and 1 patient underwent hardware removal during the study period. Conclusion: Our initial experience suggests that use of cellular bone allograft augmentation in hindfoot and ankle arthrodesis may offer an alternative to autograft without potential of donor site morbidity. Purpose: Hip and knee arthroplasty aims to reduce joint pain and increase functional mobility in patients with osteoarthritis; however, the degree to which arthroplasty is associated with higher physical activity is unclear. The current study sought to assess the association of hip and knee arthroplasty with objectively measured physical activity. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed wrist-worn accelerometer data collected in 2013-2016 from UK Biobank participants (aged 43-78 yr). Multivariable linear regression was performed to assess step count, cadence, overall acceleration, and activity behaviors between nonarthritic controls, end-stage arthritic, and postoperative cohorts, controlling for demographic and behavioral confounders. From a cohort of 94,707 participants with valid accelerometer wear time and complete self-reported data, electronic health records were used to identify 3506 participants having undergone primary or revision hip or knee arthroplasty and 68,389 nonarthritic controls. Results: End-stage hip or knee arthritis was associated with taking 1129 fewer steps per day (95% confidence interval (CI), 811-1447; P < 0.001) and having 5.8 fewer minutes per day (95% CI, 3.0-8.7; P < 0.001) of moderate-to-vigorous activity compared with nonarthritic controls. Unilateral primary hip and knee arthroplasties were associated with 877 (95% CI, 284-1471; P = 0.004) and 893 (95% CI, 232-1554; P = 0.008) more steps than end-stage osteoarthritic participants, respectively. Postoperative unilateral hip arthroplasty participants demonstrated levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and daily step count equivalent to nonarthritic controls. No difference in physical activity was observed between any cohorts in terms of overall acceleration, or time spent in daily light activity, sedentary behavior, or sleep. Conclusions: Hip and knee arthroplasties are associated with higher levels of physical activity compared with participants with end-stage arthritis. In this study, we aimed to compare and contrast the intralimb coordinative patterns of habitual forefoot strikers (FFS) and rearfoot strikers (RFS) during steady‐state running across three different shoe types: minimalist, neutral and cushioned shoes. To describe these coordinative patterns, we implemented the concept of the 'preferred movement path' which represents the movement path that runners naturally select in response to their physical capacity and external environment. We quantified cycle‐to‐cycle consistency (ACC) and within‐trial variance in coordination patterns (SoV) using joint angle data from the ankle and knee for ankle‐knee coupling and from the knee and hip for knee‐hip coupling. Additionally, we calculated the measure of shape difference in joint coupling as the sum of squared distances (SSD) between/within conditions and groups. The percentage of runners who displayed shape differences below certain SSD thresholds was also evaluated. Our findings revealed no significant group or shoe type effect on any of the variability measures (ACC: p = 0.460 for ankle‐knee and p = 0.832 for knee‐hip; SoV: p = 0.345 for ankle‐knee and p = 0.755 for knee‐hip). However, there was a significant (p < 0.001) shape difference observed between the most extreme shoe conditions. Despite this, when runners switched shoes, 70%–90% of them maintained their original coordinative pattern across both joint couplings, indicating a strong adherence to their preferred movement path. This suggests that while shoe type can influence the shape of the coordinative pattern, the inherent movement tendencies of the runners remain largely consistent. Highlights: The study found no differences in the cyclogram variability between habitual foot strike classification groups when wearing different shoes.The largest number of different movement responses was present at the ankle‐knee coupling.A significantly greater proportion of participants changed their ankle‐knee and knee‐hip coordinative patterns between the High versus Low Minimal Index (MI) conditions compared to the other shoe comparisons.No differences were found between the groups in terms of cyclogram variability. Aim: Preoperative identification of acetabular corrections that optimally improve joint stability and reduce elevated contact stresses could further reduce osteoarthritis progression in patients with hip dysplasia who are treated with periacetabular osteotomy (PAO). The purpose of this study was to investigate how providing patient-specific, mechanically optimal acetabular reorientations to the surgeon during preoperative planning affected the surgically achieved correction. Methods: Preoperative CT scans were used to create patient-specific hip models for 6 patients scheduled for PAO. A simulated acetabular fragment was extracted from the preoperative pelvis model and computationally rotated to simulate candidate acetabular reorientations. For each candidate, discrete element analysis was used to compute contact stresses during walking, which were summed over the gait cycle and scaled by patient age to obtain chronic contact stress-time exposure. The ideal patient-specific reorientation was identified using a cost function that balances minimising chronic stress exposures and achieving surgically acceptable acetabular coverage angles. The optimal reorientation angles and associated contact mechanics were provided to the surgeon preoperatively. After PAO was performed, a model of the surgically achieved correction was created from a postoperative CT scan. Radiographic coverage and contact mechanics were compared between preoperative, optimal, and surgically achieved orientations. Results: While surgically achieved reorientations were not significantly different from optimal reorientations in radiographically measured lateral (p = 0.094) or anterior (p = 0.063) coverage, surgically achieved reorientations had significantly (p = 0.031) reduced total contact area compared to optimal reorientations. The difference in lateral coverage and peak chronic exposure between surgically achieved and optimal reorientations decreased with increasing surgeon experience using the models (R² = 0.758, R2 = 0.630, respectively). Conclusions: Providing hip surgeons with a patient-specific, computationally optimal reorientation during preoperative planning may improve contact mechanics after PAO, which may help reduce osteoarthritis progression in patients with hip dysplasia. Altering running cadence is commonly done to reduce the risk of running-related injury/reinjury. This study examined how altering running cadence affects joint kinetic patterns and stride-to-stride kinetic variability in uninjured female runners. Twenty-four uninjured female recreational runners ran on an instrumented treadmill with their typical running cadence and with a running cadence that was 7.5% higher and 7.5% lower than typical. Ground reaction force and kinematic data were recorded during each condition, and principal component analysis was used to capture the primary sources of variability from the sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle moment time series. Runners exhibited a reduction in the magnitude of their knee extension moments when they increased their cadence and an increase in their knee extension moments when they lowered their cadence compared with when they ran with their typical cadence. They also exhibited greater stride-to-stride variability in the magnitude of their hip flexion moments and knee extension moments when they deviated from their typical running cadence (ie, running with either a higher or lower cadence). The purpose of this study was to determine shoulder joint reaction forces and muscle moments during 2 speeds (1.3 and 2.2 m/s) of wheelchair propulsion and to investigate the relationship between joints reaction forces, muscle moments, and shoulder pain. The measurements were obtained from 20 manual wheelchair users. A JR3 6-channel load sensor (±1% error) and a Qualisys system were used to record 3-dimensional pushrim kinetics and kinematics. A 3-dimensional inverse dynamic model was generated to compute joint kinetics. The results demonstrated significant differences in shoulder joint forces and moments (P <.01) between the 2 speeds of wheelchair propulsion. The greatest peak shoulder joint forces during the drive phase were anterior directed (Fy, 184.69 N), and the greatest joint moment was the shoulder flexion direction (flexion moment, 35.79 N·m) at 2.2 m/s. All the shoulder joint reaction forces and flexion moment were significantly (P <.05) related to shoulder pain index. The forces combined in superior and anterior direction found at the shoulder joint may contribute to the compression of subacromial structure and predispose manual wheelchair users to potential rotator cuff impingement syndrome. Context: Elite golfers have a high incidence of low back pain. Recent reviews have emphasized the need for investigation into how to prevent low back pain in golfers, prompting the current study. Design: Prospective longitudinal cohort study. Methods: Forty-one injury-free golfers were included in this study. At baseline, lower quadrant joint angles and club and ball performance were measured while each golfer performed 10 drives. The golfers were then monitored for 6 months and were allocated into 2 groups depending on whether or not they developed low back pain. The initial, baseline kinematic variables of the low back pain group and the uninjured group were then compared. Results: Over the 6-month monitoring period, 17 (41%) of the golfers developed low back pain. At baseline assessment, the low back pain group had 4° less lead ankle dorsiflexion at setup (P = .01; effect size = 0.82), 6° less lead knee flexion at the top of the backswing (P = .05; effect size = 0.64), 6° less lead ankle dorsiflexion at the top of the backswing (P = .01; effect size = 0.82), 6° more trail hip adduction at the top of the backswing (P = .02; effect size = 0.79), 9° more trail knee flexion at impact (P = .05; effect size = -0.64), and 6° more trail hip adduction at the end of follow through (P < .00; effect size = 1.00). Conclusion: Golfers who developed low back pain during the 6-month monitoring period displayed distinct differences in biomechanics at baseline when all golfers were injury free. These biomechanical differences may be considered a precursor to injury. Three-dimensional motion analysis may indicate whether elite golfers are at risk of developing low back pain. Research is needed to assess whether targeted exercise and sports drills aimed at addressing the biomechanical risk factors identified may prevent low back pain in elite golfers. To examine intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the clinical measurement of pediatric joint motion of upper and lower extremities, based on participant condition and measurement technique. PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched using combinations of children or adolescents, range of motion, and reliability. Reference lists and citations of reviewed studies were searched for additional publications. Thirty-one studies of pediatric samples of developing typically, orthopedic injuries, athletes, cerebral palsy, and other diagnoses were reviewed. For techniques, measurements were made most frequently with a goniometer followed by visual estimation, inclinometer, smartphone apps, and specialized devices. The reliability of hip abduction measurements of participants with cerebral palsy was evaluated most often and varied widely for both intraobserver and interobserver. In general, goniometric results indicated greater reliability for upper than lower extremities and for intraobserver than interobserver. As the other techniques were each utilized in only a few studies, involving different participant conditions, joint motions and statistics, the analysis of their reliability was limited. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability have not been established for pediatric joint motion measurements. Further research should include various joint motion measurements for different pediatric conditions using appropriate statistics. Background: Biomarkers have potential to identify early signs of joint disease. This study compared joint pain and function in adolescents and young adults with cerebral palsy compared with individuals without. Methods: This cross-sectional study compared individuals with cerebral palsy (n = 20), aged 13–30 yrs with Gross Motor Function Classification System I–III and age-matched individuals without cerebral palsy (n = 20). Knee and hip joint pain measured using Numeric Pain Rating Scale and Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score and Hip dysfunction and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score surveys. Objective strength and function were also measured. Biomarkers for tissue turnover (serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, urinary C-terminal crosslinked telopeptide of type II collagen) and cartilage degradation (serum matrix metalloproteinase 1, matrix metalloproteinase 3) were measured in blood and urinary samples. Findings: Individuals with cerebral palsy had increased knee and hip joint pain, reduced leg strength, reduced walking and standing speeds, and ability to carry out activities of daily living ( P < 0.005) compared with controls. They also had higher serum matrix metalloproteinase 1 ( P < 0.001) and urinary C-terminal crosslinked telopeptide of type II collagen levels ( P < 0.05). Individuals with cerebral palsy who were Gross Motor Function Classification System I and II demonstrated reduced hip joint pain ( P = 0.02) and higher matrix metalloproteinase 1 levels ( P = 0.02) compared with Gross Motor Function Classification System III. Interpretation: Individuals with cerebral palsy with less severe mobility deficits had higher matrix metalloproteinase 1 levels likely due to more prolonged exposure to abnormal joint loading forces but experienced less joint pain. Background: This study aimed to: (1) identify assessment methods that can detect greater ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DROM) limitation in the injured limb; (2) determine whether differences in weightbearing measurements exist even in the absence of DROM limitations in the injured limb according to non-weightbearing measurements; and (3) examine associations between DROM in the weightbearing and non-weightbearing positions and compare those between a patient group with foot and ankle injuries and a healthy group. Methods: Eighty-two patients with foot and ankle injuries (e.g., fractures, ligament and tendon injuries) and 49 healthy individuals participated in this study. Non-weightbearing DROM was measured under two different conditions: prone position with knee extended and prone position with knee flexed. Weightbearing DROM was measured as the tibia inclination angle (weightbearing angle) and distance between the big toe and wall (weightbearing distance) at maximum dorsiflexion. The effects of side (injured, uninjured) and measurement method on DROM in the patient groups were assessed using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA and t-tests. Pearson correlations between measurements were assessed. In addition, we analyzed whether patients without non-weightbearing DROM limitation (≤ 3 degrees) showed limitations in weightbearing DROM using t-tests with Bonferroni correction. Results: DROM in patient groups differed significantly between legs with all measurement methods (all: P < 0.001), with the largest effect size for weightbearing angle (d = 0.95). Patients without non-weightbearing DROM limitation (n = 37) displayed significantly smaller weightbearing angle and weightbearing distance on the injured side than on the uninjured side (P < 0.001 each), with large effect sizes (d = 0.97–1.06). Correlation coefficients between DROM in non-weightbearing and weightbearing positions were very weak (R = 0.17, P = 0.123) to moderate (R = 0.26–0.49, P < 0.05) for the patient group, and moderate to strong for the healthy group (R = 0.51–0.69, P < 0.05). Conclusions: DROM limitations due to foot and ankle injuries may be overlooked if measurements are only taken in the non-weightbearing position and should also be measured in the weightbearing position. Furthermore, DROM measurements in non-weightbearing and weightbearing positions may assess different characteristics, particularly in patient group. Isometric strength training has been reported to benefit various sport-related dynamic performances. However, it is still unknown whether performing isometric strength training at single or multiple joint angles would elicit greater benefit. Purpose: To compare the effects of isometric bench press performed at single (SIBP) and multiple (MIBP) joint angles on dynamic strength and overhead throwing performance. Methods: Sixteen male softball and baseball athletes performed overhead throwing, 1-repetition-maximum (1RM) bench press, and ballistic push-up during pretest and posttest. They were then randomly assigned to either SIBP or MIBP to undergo 12 strength training sessions. During the training, isometric bench press was performed at only 90° elbow angle for SIBP but at 60°, 90°, and 120° elbow angles for MIBP. Results: A significant main time effect was observed for bench press 1RM (P =.003) and relative 1RM (P <.001). Similarly, a significant main time effect was observed for ballistic push-up peak power only (P =.037). There was no significant change in overhead throwing velocity in either group. There was also no significant difference in change in all measures between groups. However, a moderate effect in favor of MIBP was observed for change in ballistic push-up peak power (P =.180, g = 0.67). Conclusions: Based on the current findings, the inclusion of both SIBP and MIBP were equally beneficial to maximal strength development. Fall-related injuries are associated with muscle weakness and common during slope walking in older adults. However, no study has evaluated the relationship between muscle weakness, measured by maximal lower limb extension power, and older adults' ability to navigate slope walking for a better understanding of fall prevention. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the association between maximal lower limb extension power and joint mechanics during slope walking. Fifteen healthy older adults were tested. Lower limb extension power was measured using the Leg Extension Power Rig. Kinematic and kinetic analysis was performed during level (0°), incline (10°), and decline (10°) slope walking. Greater maximal lower limb extension power was significantly (p <.050; Cohen's f2 > 0.35) associated with multiple kinetic and kinematic joint mechanic variables across stance phase of the gait cycle during level, incline, and decline walking. The objectives of this study were to (1) investigate the effect of the timing of the upper body joint motions in baseball batting on the bat-head speed and (2) develop and evaluate a simulation model inputting the individual hand forces on the bat. Twenty-three male collegiate baseball players performed tee batting set at waist height. A 10-segment angle-driven simulation model consisting of a bat and upper body was driven using the coordinate data of the standard motion. Performance optimization was conducted by changing the timing of the joint angle time histories of the upper body to increase the maximum bat-head speed. The optimization simultaneously estimated the individual hand forces by polynomial approximation dependent on the total bat forces to assess joint torques of the upper body. The bat-head speed increased to 39.2 m/s from 35.6 m/s, and the optimized timings were characterized by the earlier timing of the barrel-side elbow supination, wrist radial flexion, torso right lateral flexion, and the later timing of the barrel-side shoulder abduction. It is concluded that the skillful coordination of the individual joint movements for the upper body can produce a higher bat-head speed through effective sequencing of proximal to distal movements. Reliability of joint motion and muscle length measurement in children with cerebral palsy was examined. Twenty-one studies of intraobserver and/or interobserver reliability were reviewed: joint motion of upper extremities in four and lower extremities in 13; muscle length of upper extremities in one and lower extremities in 15. Intraclass correlation coefficients for goniometric interobserver reliability varied widely for joint motion (range 0.38–0.92) and muscle length (range 0.20–0.95). Inclusion of an error measurement to provide clinicians with a value indicating true change was limited. This study empirically investigated the effects of repetitive movements of body parts through an experiment, and evaluated the suitability of the scoring systems of the existing observational methods for repetitive movements, based on the experimental results. Eighteen healthy college students participated in the experiment to assess discomfort, wherein joint movement, its repetition, and external load were used as independent variables. Postural loads for 16 postures used in the experiment were assessed using rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) and loading on the entire body assessment (LEBA). Three independent variables, joint motion, its repetition, and external load, as well as the interaction between motion repetition and external load, had significant effects on discomfort. Joint motion and external load significantly affected the RULA grand score, whereas all three independent variables affected the LEBA score. This finding may indicate that LEBA more accurately reflects the effect of repetitive body part movements. Additionally, the scoring systems for repetitive back motions by quick exposure check (QEC) and for repetitive wrist motions via a risk assessment and management tool for manual handling proactively II (RAMP II) may be reasonable based on the results of this study. The findings of this study can be used as reference information for better evaluation of postural loads assessed using the existing observational techniques, and as useful baseline data for the development of a new observational method to accurately assess stress caused by repetitive movements. The initial stride down the mound is an important aspect of the baseball pitch. Understanding the implications of stride length is essential to appropriately coach baseball pitchers. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between normalised stride length and the elbow varus and glenohumeral internal rotation moments, ball velocity, trunk and pelvic rotation and forward trunk tilt. Motion analysis data collected from 99 collegiate pitchers were analysed for this study. A random intercept, mixed-effects regression model was used to determine if there were statistically significant associations between normalised stride length and the variables of interest. Secondary analyses were conducted to determine if an optimal stride length existed in this cohort. No significant associations were found between normalised stride length, ball velocity, or upper extremity joint moments. Additionally, no optimal stride length was identified; however, trends indicate that stride lengths between 131%–137% of a pitcher's leg length may be beneficial. Normalised stride length was associated with both trunk and pelvic rotation at foot contact (p < 0.001). Trunk and pelvic rotation has been previously shown to be associated with ball velocity and joint moments, indicating that stride length may have an indirect effect on ball velocity and joint moments. The objective was to examine the interactive effects of load magnitude and locomotion pattern on lower-extremity joint angles and intralimb coordination in recruit-aged women. Twelve women walked, ran, and forced marched at body weight and with loads of +25%, and +45% of body weight on an instrumented treadmill with infrared cameras. Joint angles were assessed in the sagittal plane. Intralimb coordination of the thigh–shank and shank–foot couple was assessed with continuous relative phase. Mean absolute relative phase (entire stride) and deviation phase (stance phase) were calculated from continuous relative phase. At heel strike, forced marching exhibited greater (P <.001) hip flexion, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion compared with running. At mid-stance, knee flexion (P =.007) and ankle dorsiflexion (P =.04) increased with increased load magnitude for all locomotion patterns. Forced marching (P =.009) demonstrated a "stiff-legged" locomotion pattern compared with running, evidenced by the more in-phase mean absolute relative phase values. Running (P =.03) and walking (P =.003) had greater deviation phase than forced marching. Deviation phase increased for running (P =.03) and walking (P <.001) with increased load magnitude but not for forced marching. With loads of >25% of body weight, forced marching may increase risk of injury due to inhibited energy attenuation up the kinetic chain and lack of variability to disperse force across different supportive structures. Tripping while walking is a main contributor to falls across the adult lifespan. Trip risk is proportional to variability in toe clearance. To determine the sources of this variability, the authors computed for 10 young adults the sensitivity of toe clearance to 10 bilateral lower limb joint angles during unobstructed and obstructed walking when the lead and the trail limb crossed the obstacle. The authors computed a novel measure—singular value of the appropriate Jacobian—as the combined toe clearance sensitivity to 4 groups of angles: all sagittal and all frontal plane angles and all swing and all stance limb angles. Toe clearance was most sensitive to the stance hip ab/adduction for unobstructed gait. For obstructed gait, sensitivity to other joints increased and matched the sensitivity to stance hip ab/adduction. Combined sensitivities revealed critical information that was not evident in the sensitivities to individual angles. The combined sensitivity to stance limb angles was 84% higher than swing limb angles. The combined sensitivity to the sagittal plane angles was lower than the sensitivity to the frontal plane angles during unobstructed gait, and this relation was reversed during obstacle crossing. The monitoring of athletes is crucial to preventing injuries, identifying fatigue or supporting return-to-play decisions. The purpose of this study was to explore the ability of Kohonen neural network self-organizing maps (SOM) to objectively characterize movement patterns during sidestepping and their association with injury risk. Further, the network's sensitivity to detect limb dominance was assessed. The data of 67 athletes with a total of 613 trials were included in this study. The 3D trajectories of 28 lower-body passive markers collected during sidestepping were used to train a SOM. The network consisted of 1247 neurons distributed over a 43 × 29 rectangular map with a hexagonal neighbourhood topology. Out of 61,913 input vectors, the SOM identified 1247 unique body postures. Visualizing the movement trajectories and adding several hidden variables allows for the investigation of different movement patterns and their association with joint loading. The used approach identified athletes that show significantly different movement strategies when sidestepping with their dominant or non-dominant leg, where one strategy was clearly associated with ACL-injury-relevant risk factors. The results highlight the ability of unsupervised machine learning to monitor an individual athlete's status without the necessity to reduce the complexity of the data describing the movement. Biomechanics researchers often experimentally measure static or fluctuating dynamic contact forces, areas, and stresses at the interface of natural and artificial joints, including the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. This information helps explain joint contact mechanics, as well as mechanisms that may contribute to disease, damage, and degradation. Currently, the most common in vitro experimental technique involves a thin pressure-sensitive film inserted into the joint space; but, the film's finite thickness disturbs the joint's ordinary articulation. Similarly, the most common in vivo experimental technique uses video recording of 3D limb motion combined with dynamic analysis of a 3D link-segment model to calculate joint contact force, but this does not provide joint contact area or stress distribution. Moreover, many researchers may be unaware of older or newer alternative techniques that may be more suitable for their particular research application. Thus, this article surveys over 50 years of English-language scientific literature in order to (a) describe the basic working principles, advantages, and disadvantages of each technique, (b) examine the trends among the studies and methods, and (c) make recommendations for future directions. Purpose: Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) generally exhibit limb underloading behaviors during walking, but most research focuses on per-step comparisons. Cumulative loading metrics offer unique insight into joint loading as magnitude, duration, and total steps are considered, but few studies have evaluated if cumulative loads are altered post-ACLR. Here, we evaluated if underloading behaviors are apparent in ACLR limbs when using cumulative load metrics and how load metrics change in response to walking speed modifications. Methods: Treadmill walking biomechanics were evaluated in 21 participants with ACLR at three speeds (self-selected (SS); 120% SS and 80% SS). Cumulative loads per step and per kilometer were calculated using knee flexion and adduction moment (KFM and KAM) and vertical ground reaction force (GRF) impulses. Traditional magnitude metrics for KFM, KAM, and GRF were also calculated. Results: The ACLR limb displayed smaller KFM and GRF in early and late stances, but larger KFM and GRF during midstance compared with the contralateral limb (P <0.01). Only GRF cumulative loads (per step and per kilometer) were reduced in the ACLR limb (P <0.01). In response to speed modifications, load magnitudes generally increased with speed. Conversely, cumulative load metrics (per step and per kilometer) decreased at faster speeds and increased at slow speeds (P < 0.01). Conclusions: Patients with ACLR underload their knee in the sagittal plane per step, but cumulatively over the course of many steps/distance, this underloading phenomenon was not apparent. Furthermore, cumulative load increased at slower speeds, opposite to what is identified with traditional single-step metrics. Data on nerve excursion is crucial to inform clinical assessment and treatment using neurodynamic tests and neural mobilization. To synthesize evidence on peripheral nerves longitudinal and transverse excursion in response to joint movement in both asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals and to determine whether there are significant differences between them. Studies were sought using Pubmed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Academic Search Complete, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Scielo. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, assessed full reports, extracted information on studies' characteristics, and assessed their methodological quality. A qualitative synthesis of data was performed. Thirty-one articles were included (19 on nerves of the upper limb and 12 on nerves of the lower limb), of which 21 reported on asymptomatic participants only and 10 compared symptomatic and asymptomatic participants. Longitudinal excursion in asymptomatic participants reached up to 50.2 mm and transverse excursion 4.3 mm. Eight (out of 10) studies found significant differences for nerve excursion between symptomatic and asymptomatic participants for diverse clinical conditions. Nerve excursion varies in response to different combinations of joint movement, positioning of adjacent joints, distance to moving joint and nerve, and needs to be considered in neural testing and mobilization. This study determined changes in lower limb joint stiffness when running with body-borne load, and whether they differ with stride or sex. Twenty males and 16 females had joint stiffness quantified when running (4.0 m/s) with body-borne load (20, 25, 30, and 35 kg) and 3 stride lengths (preferred or 15% longer and shorter). Lower limb joint stiffness, flexion range of motion (RoM), and peak flexion moment were submitted to a mixed-model analysis of variance. Knee and ankle stiffness increased 19% and 6% with load (P <.001, P =.049), but decreased 8% and 6% as stride lengthened (P =.004, P <.001). Decreased knee RoM (P <.001, 0.9°–2.7°) and increased knee (P =.007, up to 0.12 N.m/kg.m) and ankle (P =.013, up to 0.03 N.m/kg.m) flexion moment may stiffen joints with load. Greater knee (P <.001, 4.7°–5.4°) and ankle (P <.001, 2.6°–7.2°) flexion RoM may increase joint compliance with longer strides. Females exhibited 15% stiffer knee (P =.025) from larger reductions in knee RoM (4.3°–5.4°) with load than males (P <.004). The causes of age-related differences in lower-extremity joint moments and powers are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of highly physically active older adults walking with (1) a step length similar to young adults and (2) an upright trunk posture, on hip and ankle joint kinetics. The authors hypothesized that, compared with their self-selected walking mechanics, older adults would exhibit decreased hip kinetics and increased ankle kinetics when prescribed a young adult step length, and would exhibit decreased hip extension moments when maintaining an upright trunk posture during walking. A total of 12 active older adults (67 [5] y) and 13 active young adults (21 [3] y) walked at 1.3 m/s. The older adults also walked at 1.3 m/s with step lengths prescribed from height-matched young adults and, in a separate condition, walked with an upright trunk. The older adults did not display larger ankle kinetics or smaller hip kinetics in either condition compared to walking with a selfselected step length. These findings indicate that step length and trunk position do not primarily contribute to age-related differences in kinetics in highly active older adults and should serve as a starting point for investigating alternative explanations. Context: Accurate joint position sense (JPS) is necessary for effective motor learning and high performance in activities that require fine motor control. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) can be a promising intervention. Objective: To examine existing peer-reviewed original studies that have investigated the effect of PNF techniques on the JPS in terms of the methodological quality, PNF techniques, outcomes, and participant characteristics. Evidence Acquisition: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, SocINDEX, Scopus, and Cochrane Library from inception to January 2018. The following inclusion criteria were used: (1) assessment of the JPS; (2) peer-reviewed original studies with a randomized controlled trial or quasi-randomized controlled trial design; (3) participants with musculoskeletal disorders or healthy individuals (ie, neither animal studies nor those involving neurological problems); and (4) no cointervention with PNF, except for warm-up procedures. The methodological quality was assessed using PEDro scale and 5 additional criteria. Effect size (η2) was calculated where a positive value indicated an increased JPS after PNF as compared with other approaches including the wait-and-see method. Evidence Synthesis: Nine studies were examined for their methodological quality, and only one study scored >6 on the PEDro scale. Positive and large effect size (η2 >.14) was detected in 2 studies where JPS of the knee with contract-relax and replication techniques was assessed in healthy individuals. However, the methodological quality of these studies was poor (PEDro scores of 3 and ≤5 in the total quality score out of 16, respectively). Conclusions: The current study did not find multiple studies with high methodological quality and similar PNF techniques, outcomes, and characteristics of participants. Context: Core control and strength are important for reducing the risk of lower-extremity injury. Current evidence on the effect of core training in male adolescent athletes is limited, and other investigations into the effects of core training often emphasized core strength only. Objective: To examine whether core training emphasizing both control and strength of the trunk and hip would improve joint kinematics during landing, sports performance, and lower-extremity muscle strength in adolescent male volleyball athletes. Design: Single group pretest and posttest design. Setting: University laboratory. Participants: Sixteen male participants (age: 13.4 [1] y, height: 167.8 [8.6] cm, mass: 58.6 [13.9] kg, and volleyball experience: 3.8 [1.5] y) from a Division I volleyball team at a junior high school. Main Outcome Measurements: Kinematics of the trunk and lower-extremity during box landing and spike jump landing tasks, volleyball-related sports performance, and isokinetic strength of hip and knee muscles were assessed before and after a 6-week core training program. Results: After training, the participants demonstrated decreased trunk flexion angle (P = .01, Cohen's d = 0.78) during the box landing task and reduced the maximum knee internal rotation angle (P = .04, Cohen's d = 0.56) during the spike jump landing task. The average isokinetic strength of hip flexors and external rotators, and knee flexors and extensors also significantly increased (P = .001, Cohen's d = 0.98; P = .04, Cohen's d = 0.57; P = .02, Cohen's d = 0.66; P = .003, Cohen's d = 0.87, respectively); however, sports performance did not show significant changes. Conclusions: A more erect landing posture following training suggests that the core training program may be beneficial for improving core stability. Background There is conflicting data on which kinetic variables are important to consider with running injuries. Furthermore, less is understood regarding differences in these variables when considering demographics such as age, sex, weight, and running speed. The primary question was what joint power kinetic variables were different between non-injured and injured runners. Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify if there were differences in joint power kinetic variables between non-injured runners and injured runners. Study Design Case-Control Study Methods Kinetic data were collected on 122 runners (26 non-injured and 96 injured) over three years with a Bertec force plated treadmill and Qualisys 3D motion capture. The subjects were considered eligible if they self-identified themselves as runners or had running as a key component of their activity. The subjects ran at a comfortable, self-selected pace while two 10-second trials of recordings were used to calculate the means of peak power generated at the hips, knees, and ankles of each gait cycle. Foot strike was categorized by kinematic data. Two sample T-tests were used to compare peak power variables at the hips, knees, and ankles between non-injured and injured runners. Logistic regression analyses examined how a combination of demographics and peak power variables were associated with injuries. Results No peak power variable at the hip, knee, or ankle was significantly different between injured and non-injured runners (p=0.07-0.87). However, higher hip power absorbed was found to be protective against injuries (odds ratio, .16; 95% CI .025-.88) when considering demographics using a logistic regression model including sex, foot strike, BMI, speed, age, and power variables from the hip, knee, and ankle. The area under the ROC curve was .74, which is acceptable discrimination. Conclusion When controlling for age, sex, BMI, foot strike, and speed; higher hip power absorbed was found to be protective against injury. During initial acceleration, the first steps of a maximal‐effort (sprint) run often determine success or failure in the capture and evasion of an opponent, and is therefore a vital factor of success in many modern sports. However, accelerative events are commonly performed after having already run considerable distances, and the associated fatigue should impair muscle force production and thus reduce acceleration. Despite this, the effects of running‐induced fatigue on our ability to accelerate as well as the running technique used to achieve it have received little attention. We recorded 3‐D kinematics and ground reaction forces during the first three steps of the acceleration phase from a standing start before and after performing a high‐speed, multi‐directional, fatiguing run‐walk protocol in well‐trained running athletes who were habituated to accelerative sprinting. We found that the athletes were able to maintain their acceleration despite changing running technique, which was associated with use of a more upright posture, longer ground contact time, increased vertical ground reaction impulse, decreased hip flexion and extension velocities, and a shift in peak joint moments, power, and positive work from the hip to the knee joint; no changes were detected in ankle joint function. Thus, a compensatory increase in knee joint function alleviated the reduction in hip flexor‐extensor capacity. These acute adaptations may indicate that the hip extensors (gluteal and hamstring muscle groups) were more susceptible to fatigue than the ankle and knee musculature, and may thus be a primary target for interventions promoting fatigue resistance. BACKGROUND: Pole vaulting involves trunk flexion, extension, and rotation, which may place the lumbar spine under stress. Repeated pole vaulting may cause lumbar disc degeneration (DD) and lumbar spondylolysis (LS); however, this phenomenon is yet to be established. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the difference in the maximum joint angles of the shoulder, hip, and trunk during pole vaulting between male pole vaulters with and without lumbar DD or LS. METHODS: This retrospective study included 17 male pole vaulters. Four high-speed cameras were used to record the pole vaulters at 240 Hz. Radiography and magnetic resonance imaging were used to examine the lumbar spine in all athletes. Differences in the data between two sets of groups were analyzed using the unpaired t-test or the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the maximum joint angle of hip flexion between pole vaulters with and without lumbar DD (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Pole vaulters with lumbar DD may use lumbar flexion instead of hip flexion during the rock-back movement. Moreover, LS may occur due to repeated failed vaulting. J Strength Cond Res 37(4): 840–847, 2023—This study aimed (a) to analyze the influence of sport-specific postactivation potentiation (PAP) on serve velocity (SV) and serve accuracy (SA) in young tennis players, (b) to compare the PAP effects of 2 different conditioning activities (CA) on SV and SA, and (c) to explore if changes in SV would be related to tennis player's neuromuscular performance. Sixteen competition young tennis players performed 3 testing sessions in a randomized order. In the control session, subjects performed a warm-up protocol followed by the SV and SA tests. The experimental sessions involved 1 (shoulder internal rotation [SHIR]) or 2 (SHIR + shoulder flexion [SHF]) repetitions of a 5 second maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) executed before the SV and SA tests. Results showed a moderate significant (p = 0.037) difference between SV at control session and following the SHIR + SHF CA protocol at minute 0 (3.4 ± 4.6%; 4.6 km·h−1; ES = 0.711). Serve accuracy did not differ between CA protocols and control session at any time point. No significant relations were found between force-time curve parameters and SV percent changes at different recovery times. Performing 2, short (5 seconds), upper-limb, tennis joint-specific MVIC seems to enhance SV without negatively affecting SA in young competition tennis players. On the contrary, performing one MVIC does not seem to obtain the same effects. Lack of time, lack of access to equipment, and environmental constraints are generally perceived as barriers to regular physical activity. Moreover, insufficient activity is known to promote sedentary behavior, which is a factor in many chronic diseases, negatively affects mental health, and reduces quality of life. Exercise snacks, defined as short and efficient bursts of exercise, are convenient and easy to implement, reduce sedentary time, increase physical activity, and promote the development of good exercise habits. Previous studies have found exercise snacks to be safe and feasible for the elderly, promoting physical function and reducing the incidence of falls and metabolic diseases. Exercise snacks have also been found to be effective in healthy adults as well as in patients with obesity and diabetes, helping decrease blood sugar and promoting cardiorespiratory fitness. Depending on the participant's age and tolerance, exercise snack patterns may be extended and distinguished into two forms: 10-minute bouts of gentle intermittent exercise twice a day and 60-second bouts of vigorous exercise 3 to 8 times a day. The main considerations for exercise snacks include: multi-joint exercise is better than single-joint exercise, lower body exercise is better than upper body exercise, and dynamic and rapid movement that pushes away from the ground promotes osteogenesis and helps prevent osteoporosis and fractures. Purpose: Toe-in gait is defined as a style of walking in which the foot turns inward. It may be caused by an increase in femoral bone anteversion, tibia torsion, and metatarsus adductus. There are some conservative treatment approaches used to correct this condition. This review aimed to determine the effects of the toe-in gait on joint loading, kinematics, and kinetic parameters while walking. Moreover, it sought to determine the efficiency of various conservative treatments used to correct the condition. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Web of Science database, EBSCO, and Embase, using the following keywords in toe, toe-in, toeing, in-toe, pigeon toe, and conservative treatment published between 1950 and 2021. The quality of the studies was evaluated using the Down and Black tool. Results: A total of 13 papers on the impact of toe-in gait on joint contact force, kinematics, kinetic parameters, and conservative approaches to management were found. The quality of the studies varied between a score of 11 and 22. The toe-in gait influences the joint contact forces and kinematics of the joints, especially the hip and pelvis. The effects of conservative treatment on the toe-in gait appear to be controversial. Conclusion: As the toe-in gait influences the joint contact force, it may increase the incidence of degenerative joint diseases. Therefore, treatment is recommended. However, there is no strong evidence on the efficacy of conservative treatments, and there are no recommendations for the use of these treatments in subjects with toe-in gait. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prosthetics are an extension of the human body and must provide functionality similar to that of a non-disabled individual to be effective. Sports prosthetics such as the Flex-Foot Cheetah from Össur have demonstrated the value of creating devices that both provide mechanical support and introduce passive energy return to mimic forces otherwise produced at joints. These energy return mechanisms have not yet been demonstrated for upper limb prosthetics but could improve their effectiveness and provide a greater range of motion and control. Using multi-material 3D printing technology, we extend energy return components to upper limb prosthetics by developing novel force-sensing springs and applying them to a basketball prosthetic. The 3D-printed springs compensate for the forces otherwise generated by wrist and finger flexion while measuring the mechanical deflection. We discuss design guidelines, methods for integrated 3D printed energy return within prosthetics, and broader applications in assistive technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The purpose of this study is to examine the association between physical activity and contracture in older patients confined to bed in long-term care (LTC) facilities. Methods Patients wore ActiGraph GT3X+ for 8 hours on their wrists, and vector magnitude (VM) counts were obtained as the amount of activity. The passive range of motion (ROM) of joints was measured. The severity of ROM restriction classified, as the tertile value of the reference ROM of each joint, was scored 1-3 points. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (Rs) were used to measure the association between the VM counts per day and ROM restrictions. Results The sample comprised 128 patients with a mean (SD) age of 84.8 (8.8) years. The mean (SD) of VM was 84574.6 (115195.2) per day. ROM restriction was observed in most joints and movement directions. ROMs in all joints and movement directions, except wrist flexion and hip abduction, were significantly correlated with VM. Furthermore, the VM and ROM severity scores showed a significant negative correlation (Rs = -0.582, p < .0001). Conclusions A significant correlation between the physical activity and ROM restrictions indicates that a decrease in the amount of physical activity could be one of the causes of contracture.
