1. Diagnostic Study of Mathematical Reasoning in Novice University Students

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study aimed at diagnosing how newly enrolled mathematics majors reason from a mathematical standpoint when they are required to perform inductive and deductive processes and validate or refute claims of a general nature. The theoretical framework underpinning this research comprises studies and investigations related to mathematical reasoning. The results of this diagnostic reveal that students lack mathematical reasoning skills that would allow them to justify statements of a general nature. In addition, they face difficulties in the development of deductive reasoning, are prone to generalize based on specific cases and lack skills in mathematical argumentation. On the other hand, they lack basic algebra skills such as developing square binomials and factoring. These findings highlight the need to design and implement a didactic proposal that fosters the development of reasoning and argumentation in students.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze little-known and even unpublished texts of the Brazilian writer Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto. Through research in the archives of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, it was possible to find manuscripts in which the author refers to episodes that were part of his intellectual formation and chronicles signed with the pseudonyms Philéas Fogg and S. Holmes in the Fon-Fon magazine, an important publication in the Carioca press in the early twentieth century. Thus, we also seek to understand the historical implications of the polemic issues among the intellectuals of the Tropical Belle Époque.

Abstract

Biological neural networks are characterized by their high degree of plasticity, a core property that enables the remarkable adaptability of natural organisms. Importantly, this ability affects both the synaptic strength and the topology of the nervous systems. Artificial neural networks, on the other hand, have been mainly designed as static, fully connected structures that can be notoriously brittle in the face of changing environments and novel inputs. Building on previous works on Neural Developmental Programs (NDPs), we propose a class of self-organizing neural networks capable of synaptic and structural plasticity in an activity and reward-dependent manner which we call Lifelong Neural Developmental Program (LNDP). We present an instance of such a network built on the graph transformer architecture and propose a mechanism for pre-experience plasticity based on the spontaneous activity of sensory neurons. Our results demonstrate the ability of the model to learn from experiences in different control tasks starting from randomly connected or empty networks. Abstract

Over the past decade, the development of computer-aided detection tools for medical image analysis has seen significant advancements. However, tasks such as the automatic differentiation of tissues or regions in medical images remain challenging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has proven valuable for early diagnosis, particularly in conditions like prostate cancer, yet it often struggles to produce high-resolution images with clearly defined boundaries. In this article, we propose a novel segmentation approach based on minimum cross-entropy thresholding using the equilibrium optimizer (MCE-EO) to enhance the visual differentiation of tissues in prostate MRI scans. To validate our method, we conducted two experiments. The first evaluated the overall performance of MCE-EO using standard grayscale benchmark images, while the second focused on a set of transaxial-cut prostate MRI scans. MCE-EO’s performance was compared against six stochastic optimization techniques. Statistical analysis of the results demonstrates that MCE-EO offers superior performance for prostate MRI segmentation, providing a more effective tool for distinguishing between various tissue types.

Abstract

El café es una de las bebidas más populares a nivel mundial, y en El Salvador, representa uno de los cultivos más importantes durante muchos años, produciéndose una gran variedad de cafés especiales. En este estudio, se realizó la actividad antioxidante por el método de captura del radical DPPH, y la cuantificación por HPLC-PDA de cafeína en taza, de 12 cafés especiales salvadoreños que participaron en el certamen de catación “La Taza de la Excelencia 2019”. Se determinó que las muestras presentaban un rango de 0.121-0.281 mmoles equivalentes de Trolox (ET)/g de capacidad antioxidante. En cuanto al contenido de cafeína, reportó valores de 0.617-1.163%, típicos de la especie Coffea arabica.

24. Modelling vaporizing fluid flow through porous media with applications to liquefied natural gas

Abstract

The problem of vaporizing flow of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through porous or penetrable media has received very little attention despite its importance in assessing the performance and risk-based safety of large membrane tank LNG ships under barrier leakages. In this work, a fluid flow model is proposed and used to analyse the vaporizing flow behaviour of LNG through soil and glass wool porous materials. Furthermore, a modified vaporizing liquid pool model is implemented and used to examine the problem of vaporizing LNG pool on non-penetrable solid substrates. We employed an explicit, finite difference and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithms coded in FORTRAN to respectively solve the flow and pool models. Both models were successfully verified and validated by comparisons to experimental data, analytical solutions, and to predictions of a commercial software (TOUGH2). Results from the vaporizing flow and pool analyses demonstrate that, for some of the applications considered, the liquid is expected to reach considered threshold depths, seep through the porous layer and contact, contaminate and/or embrittle surrounding natural or engineered systems. For the specific application to LNG cargo containment systems (or cargo tanks), this work has shown that there are safety risks associated with LNG leakage, which are ultra-low temperature of the inner hull, cryogenic damage and subsequent failure of the cargo containment system. Thus, for any LNG membrane cargo containment system to continue to be safe and secure, the various structural members of the insulation system should be designed and equipped with new and improved materials that possesses the necessary mechanical and thermophysical properties to maintain and/or improve the critical temperature standard and low-temperature performance of these systems. Further work should consider additional experimental evidence in order to fully validate and establish that solution predictions by the proposed models are describing the actual physical effects.

25. Low-frequency Current Fluctuations in Individual Semiconducting Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract

We present a systematic study on low-frequency current fluctuations of nano-devices consisting of one single semiconducting nanotube, which exhibit significant 1/f-type noise. By examining devices with different switching mechanisms, carrier types (electrons vs. holes), and channel lengths, we show that the 1/f fluctuation level in semiconducting nanotubes is correlated to the total number of transport carriers present in the system. However, the 1/f noise level per carrier is not larger than that of most bulk conventional semiconductors, e.g. Si. The pronounced noise level observed in nanotube devices simply reflects on the small number of carriers involved in transport. These results not only provide the basis to quantify the noise behavior in a one-dimensional transport system, but also suggest a valuable way to characterize low-dimensional nanostructures based on the 1/f fluctuation phenomenon.

Abstract

Backgound: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease, clinically characterized by memory and cognitive dysfunction. AD affects about 35 million people worldwide today and is estimated to nearly double every 20 years. Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (Miller) I.M. Johnston has been reported in Nigerian ethnomedicine as a memory enhancer. There is a lack of scientific evidence to justify the claims. Moreover, there are no effective neurotherapeutic agents available for the treatment of AD; hence the need arises to search for new and more effective agents. Objective: This study aims to evaluate and identify potential molecules with anti-Alzheimer’s and antioxidant potentials from Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaves. Methods: The air-dried leaves of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (Miller) I.M. Johnston (PCG/UNN/0267) were extracted using the successive extraction procedure based on increasing the polarity of the eluent in the ascending order of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Phytochemical screening was carried out on the extracts using standard procedures. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitory activities were done according to Ellman’s method. Eserine was used as standard. Antioxidant potentials were evaluated using standard in vitro chemical analyses. A GC-MS (QP2010SE, SHIDMAZU JAPAN) analysis was done to identify bioactive compounds from the most active fraction. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s Multiple Comparison test at α0.05. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of tannins, resins, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, carbohydrates, alkaloids, and terpenoids. Ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated the highest acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity at 1 mg/mL with IC50 values of 0.288 ± 0.00 mg/mL (82.9% inhibition) and 0.440±0.02 mg/mL ((75.4% inhibition), respectively, compared to eserine (IC50=0.050 ± 0.01 mg/mL) for AChE and (IC50=0.049 ± 0.00 mg/mL) for BuChE. Metal (ferrous ion) chelating activity was also high in the ethyl acetate fraction with IC50 value of 0.160 ± 0.00 mg/mL compared to EDTA (IC50 = 0.085 ± 0.00 mg/mL) at 1 mg/mL. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity was higher in the ethyl acetate fraction (IC50 = 0.352 ± 0.01 mg/mL) when compared to BHT (IC50 = 0.074 ± 0.00 mg/mL) at 1 mg/mL. The pro-anthocyanidin content was also higher in ethyl acetate (6.94 ± 0.16 mg cyanidin/g of sample) compared to other fractions. GC-MS analysis of the most active fraction (ethyl acetate) revealed a total of 56 compounds. The major compounds revealed were: n-Hexadecanoic acid (Area % of 13.45%; Retention time of 14.863), Phytol (Area % of 5.13%; Retention time of 15.864), Octadecanoic acid (Area % of 4.86%; Retention time of 16.211), 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid (Z,Z,Z) (Area % of 26.85%; Retention time of 16.09), Squalene (% Area of 2.65%; Retention time of 20.94) and alpha-Tocopheryl acetate (% Area of 1.71%; Retention time of 23.40). Conclusion: C. aconitifolius has the potential to inhibit cholinesterase enzymes involved in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. The molecules identified could serve as potential drug leads in managing Alzheimer’s disease.

Abstract

A literatura e, consequentemente, o gênero romance histórico se tornaram fontes bastante utilizadas em pesquisas sobre o passado, resultando em estudos com ampla e enriquecida compreensão de períodos históricos. A noite de São Bartolomeu, ocorrida na França durante o início do século XVI, foi retratada no romance A Rainha Margot (1845), de Alexandre Dumas, com tradução e adaptação de Fernando Nuno em 2001. O objetivo da pesquisa é compreender as relações entre história e ficção elaborando uma ponte entre determinada historiografia que trata do movimento religioso reformista e o citado livro de Dumas, escrito no século XIX. Nesses termos, esperamos contribuir para os estudos acerca da utilização do romance histórico enquanto fonte para melhor entender as relações entre guerras religiosas e a formação da modernidade.

37. Effect of Particle Sizes on some Mechanical Properties of Kernel Shell Reinforced Al-Mg-Mn Composites

Abstract

Palm kernel shells (PKS) are wastes and are rich in carbon making them potential sources of reinforcement for composite developments. This work synthesised palm kernel shell nanoparticle and developed Al-Mg-Mn composites at different weight fractions of PKS particle additions. Structural and mechanical properties of the materials produced were studied. TEM result reveals an average size, 72.6 nm of PKS particle obtained after 74 hours of milling. Structural integrity of the nanocomposites was established by SEM. Tensile strength, hardness values and impact energy increase due to 10% by weight of PKS nanoparticle additions are 48.51%, 44.03% and 16.15%, respectively. The improvements in mechanical properties are attributed to firm structure containing Al and MnSi eutectic host harbouring well distributed intermetallic. Better properties of Al-Mg-Mn nanocomposites than micro composites are linked with the refinement of the PKS nanoparticles.

48. Analytical developments on 6C computation inspired by navigation algorithms

Abstract

The deployment of portable broadband rotational ground motion sensors in the field marks the beginning of 6 degrees of freedom simultaneous and co-located measurements in seismology, after decades of ground motion instrumentation measuring only translations. Regarding the computation of this new kind of data-set, there are obviously some analysis technics to inherit from navigation.Hence, now seismology has also to solve the 6 equations system with 6 unknowns of dynamic motion. In a navigation system, it is computed real-time in onboard electronics, taking into account centrifugal forces, non-commutativity of rotations, and compensation of projection of gravity in accelerometers frame and Earth rotation rate in gyroscopes frame. For the moment, attempts at handling the merging of 6 components in seismology has remained mostly empirical, using cross-correlation maximization and other optimization methods.In this study, we developed the analytical framework for seismological 6-C computation methods, derived from navigation-inspired methods to establish a stronger link between these algorithm expertises.
