Submergence stress can greatly limit grain yield of inbred rice (Oryza sativa L.), but the effects of submergence on hybrid rice are unclear. A pot experiment was conducted to clarify the effects of submergence that happens at the vegetative growth stage on two Chinese hybrid rice cultivars. The rice cultivars Zheyou-18, an indica-japonica hybrid, and Yliangyou-689, an indica hybrid, were planted under two treatments, submergence (43 cm depth of tap water for about 2 wk) and control (no submergence). Results showed that the grain yield of submerged 'Yliangyou-689' was 539.0 g m-2 in 2018 and 614.2 g m-2 in 2019; submergence significantly reduced grain yield by 49.6% and 44.2% of that of the control. The lower level of grain yield was attributed to reduced survival rate, numbers of tillers and spikelets, plant dry weight, and crop growth rate, and excessive elongation of stems due to submergence of plants. The grain yield of submerged 'Zheyou-18' was 466.8 g m-2 in 2018 and 376.4 g m-2 in 2019 and neither of which were significantly different from that of the control, indicating higher submergence tolerance in 'Zheyou-18' than in 'Yliangyou-689'. Submergence did not affect plant N and K contents, but it reduced plant N uptake rates by 47.8% to 88.7% and it reduced K uptake rates by 53.9% to 89.5% of that of the control in these two hybrid cultivars. Glomerular diseases are the leading cause of chronic kidney disease, and mesangial cells (MCs) have been demonstrated to be involved in the pathogenesis. Puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) is a nephrotoxic drug that induces glomerular injury with elusive mechanisms. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of PAN in MC apoptosis, as well as the underlying mechanism. Here we found that PAN induced MC apoptosis accompanied by declined cell viability and enhanced inflammatory response. The apoptosis was further evidenced by increments of apoptosis regulator BAX (BAX) and caspase-3 expression. In line with the apoptotic response in MCs following PAN treatment, we also found a remarkable induction of estrogen-related receptor-α (ERRα), an orphan nuclear receptor, at both mRNA and protein levels. Interestingly, ERRα silencing by an siRNA approach resulted in an attenuation of the apoptosis and inflammatory response caused by PAN. More importantly, overexpression of ERRα in MCs significantly triggered MC apoptosis in line with increased BAX and caspase-3 expression. In PAN-treated MCs, ERRα overexpression further aggravated PAN-induced apoptosis. In agreement with the in vitro study, we also observed increased ERRα expression in line with enhanced apoptotic response in renal cortex from PAN-treated rats. These data suggest a detrimental effect of ERRα on PAN-induced MC apoptosis and inflammatory response, which could help us to better understand the pathogenic mechanism of MC injury in PAN nephropathy. Radially encoded MRI has gained increasing attention due to its motion insensitivity and reduced artifacts. However, because its samples are collected nonuniformly in the k-space, multidimensional (especially 3-D) radially sampled Mill image reconstruction is challenging. The objective of this paper is to develop a reconstruction technique in high dimensions with on-the-fly kernel calculation. It implements general multidimensional nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) algorithms and incorporates them into a k-space image reconstruction framework. The method is then applied to reconstruct from the radially encoded k-space data, although the method is applicable to any non- Cartesian patterns. Performance comparisons are made against the conventional Kaiser-Bessel (KB) gridding method for 2-D and 3-D radially encoded computer-simulated phantoms and physically scanned phantoms. The results show that the NUFFT reconstruction method has better accuracy-efficiency tradeoff than the KB gridding method when the kernel weights are calculated on the fly. It is found that for a particular conventional kernel function, using its corresponding deapodization function as a scaling factor in the NUFFT framework has the potential to improve accuracy. In particular, when a cosine scaling factor is used, the NUFFT method is faster than KB gridding method since a closed-form solution is available and is less computationally expensive than the KB kernel (KB griding requires computation of Bessel functions). Recent advances in murine cardiac studies with three-dimensional (3D) cone beam micro-CT used a retrospective gating technique. However, this sampling technique results in a limited number of projections with an irregular angular distribution due to the temporal resolution requirements and radiation dose restrictions. Both angular irregularity and undersampling complicate the reconstruction process, since they cause significant streaking artifacts. This work provides an iterative reconstruction solution to address this particular challenge. A sparseness prior regularized weighted l2 norm optimization is proposed to mitigate streaking artifacts based on the fact that most medical images are compressible. Total variation is implemented in this work as the regularizer for its simplicity. Comparison studies are conducted on a 3D cardiac mouse phantom generated with experimental data. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been widely used for landmine detection due to its high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and superior ability to image nonmetallic landmines. Processing GPR data to obtain better target images and to assist further object detection has been an active research area. Phase-shift migration is a widely used method; however, its wavenumber space is nonuniformly sampled because of the nonlinear relationship between the uniform frequency samples and the wavenumbers. Conventional methods use linear interpolation to obtain uniform wavenumber samples and compute the fast Fourier transform (FFT). This paper develops two- and three-dimensional migration methods that process GPR data to obtain images close to the actual target geometries using a nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) algorithm. The proposed method is first compared to the conventional migration approaches on simulated data and then applied to landmine field data sets. Results suggest that the NUFFT migration method is useful in focusing images, estimating landmine structure, and retaining relatively high signal-to-noise ratio in the migrated data. The processed data sets are then fed to the normalized energy and least-mean-square-based anomaly detectors. Receiver operating characteristic curves of data sets processed by different migration methods are compared. Non-Cartesian sampling is widely used for fast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Accurate and fast image reconstruction from non-Cartesian k-space data becomes a challenge and gains a lot of attention. Images provided by conventional direct reconstruction methods usually bear ringing, streaking, and other leakage artifacts caused by discontinuous structures. In this paper, we tackle these problems by analyzing the principal point spread function (PSF) of non-Cartesian reconstruction and propose a leakage reduction reconstruction scheme based on discontinuity subtraction. Data fidelity in k-space is enforced during each iteration. Multidimensional nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) algorithms are utilized to simulate the k-space samples as well as to reconstruct images. The proposed method is compared to the direct reconstruction method on computer-simulated phantoms and physical scans. Non-Cartesian sampling trajectories including 2D spiral, 2D and 3D radial trajectories are studied. The proposed method is found useful on reducing artifacts due to high image discontinuities. Annexin A2 (Anxa2) is a calcium (Ca2+)-regulated phospholipid binding protein composed of a variable N-terminus and a conserved core domain. This protein has been widely found in many tissues and fluids, including tubule cells, glomerular epithelial cells, renal vessels, and urine. In acute kidney injury, the expression level of this protein is markedly elevated in response to acute stress. Moreover, Anxa2 is a novel biomarker and potential therapeutic target with prognostic value in chronic kidney disease. In addition, Anxa2 is associated not only with clear-cell renal cell carcinoma differentiation but also the formation of calcium-related nephrolithiasis. In this review, we discuss the characteristics and functions of Anxa2 and focus on recent reports on the role of Anxa2 in the kidney, which may be useful for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid development of online social recommendation system, substantial methods have been proposed. Unlike traditional recommendation system, social recommendation performs by integrating social relationship features, where there are two major challenges, i.e., early summarization and data sparsity. Thus far, they have not been solved effectively. In this article, we propose a novel social recommendation approach, namely Multi-Graph Heterogeneous Interaction Fusion (MG-HIF), to solve these two problems. Our basic idea is to fuse heterogeneous interaction features from multi-graphs, i.e., user--item bipartite graph and social relation network, to improve the vertex representation learning. A meta-path cross-fusion model is proposed to fuse multi-hop heterogeneous interaction features via discrete cross-correlations. Based on that, a social relation GAN is developed to explore latent friendships of each user. We further fuse representations from two graphs by a novel multi-graph information fusion strategy with attention mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to combine meta-path with social relation representation. To evaluate the performance of MG-HIF, we compare MG-HIF with seven states of the art over four benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that MG-HIF achieves better performance. Progressive fibrosis in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the well-recognized cause leading to the progressive loss of renal function. Emerging evidence indicated a pathogenic role of the NACHT, LRR and PYD domains-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in mediating kidney injury. However, the role of NLRP3 in the remnant kidney disease model is still undefined. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the function of NLRP3 in modulating renal fibrosis in a CKD model of 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6 Nx) and the potential involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis. Employing NLRP3+/+ and NLRP3-/- mice with or without 5/6 Nx, we examined renal fibrotic response and mitochondrial function. Strikingly, tubulointerstitial fibrosis was remarkably attenuated in NLRP3-/- mice as evidenced by the blockade of extracellular matrix deposition. Meanwhile, renal tubular cells in NLRP3-/- mice maintained better mitochondrial morphology and higher mitochondrial DNA copy number, indicating an amelioration of mitochondrial abnormality. Moreover, NLRP3 deletion also blunted the severity of proteinuria and CKD-related hypertension. To further evaluate the direct role of NLRP3 in triggering fibrogenesis, mouse proximal tubular cells (PTCs) were subjected to transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), and the cellular phenotypic changes were detected. As expected, TGF-β1-induced alterations of PTC phenotype were abolished by NLRP3 small interfering RNA, in line with a protection of mitochondrial function. Taken together, NLRP3 deletion protected against renal fibrosis in the 5/6 Nx disease model, possibly via inhibiting mitochondrial dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
