The discovery of graphene has provided a huge boost and a new dimension to materials research and nanotechnology. Many lightweight materials with good performance have been widely used in the aviation field, which has greatly promoted the development of military and civilian industries and promoted technological innovation. In the quest to realize a scalable quantum network, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) offer distinct advantages including high single-photon efficiency and indistinguishability, high repetition rate (tens of GHz with Purcell enhancement), interconnectivity with spin qubits, and a scalable on-chip platform. However, in the past two decades, the visibility of quantum interference between independent QDs rarely went beyond the classical limit of 50$\%$ and the distances were limited from a few meters to kilometers. Here, we report quantum interference between two single photons from independent QDs separated by 302 km optical fiber. The single photons are generated from resonantly driven single QDs deterministically coupled to microcavities. Quantum frequency conversions are used to eliminate the QD inhomogeneity and shift the emission wavelength to the telecommunication band. The observed interference visibility is 0.67$\pm$0.02 (0.93$\pm$0.04) without (with) temporal filtering. Feasible improvements can further extend the distance to 600 km. Rare-earth monopnictides are predicted to be nontrivial semimetal candidates and show pressure-induced superconductivity. Here, we grow LuBi single crystal and study the magnetization, transport behaviors and electronic band structures to reveal its topological semimetal feature and superconductivity under pressure. At 0 GPa, the quantum oscillations indicate that there are several topologically nontrivial carrier pockets around the Fermi level, among which the hole ones are isotropic in shape, while the electron ones are anisotropic and responsible for the angular magnetoresistance. Upon compression, the superconductivity emerges in the titled compound, showing a similar pressure dependence as that observed in LaBi. Our calculation suggests that the electronic band structures are robust at low- and high-pressure respectively and thus the topological features are always preserved. Besides, the nearly pressure-independent density of state in LuBi indicates that the conventional electron-phonon coupling appears to play a minor role in the superconductivity.

The recent detection of GW190521 stimulated ideas on how to populate the predicted black hole pair-instability mass gap. One proposed scenario is the dynamical merger of two stars below the pair instability regime forming a star with a small core and an over-sized envelope. We explore this scenario with detailed stellar evolution calculations, starting with ad-hoc initial conditions enforcing no core growth during the merger. We outline the main challenges this scenario has to overcome, in particular the requirement to retain enough of its mass at merger time, in the subsequent evolution, and at core-collapse. We found that these massive merger products are likely helium-rich, and spend most of their remaining lifetime within regions of the Herzsprung-Russell diagram where envelope instabilities akin to luminous blue variable (LBV) eruptions are expected. An energetic estimate of the amount of mass loss neglecting the back-reaction of the star suggests that the total amount of mass that can be removed at low metallicity is . 1 M . This is small enough that at core-collapse our models are retaining sufficient mass to form black holes in the pair-instability gap similar to the recent ones detected by LIGO/Virgo. However, mass loss at the time of merger and the neutrino-driven mass loss at core collapse still need to be quantified for these models in order to confirm the viability of this scenario., Comment: accepted version to appear in ApJL

Rare-earth monopnictides display rich physical behaviors, featuring most notably spin and orbital orders in their ground state. Here, we grow ErBi single crystal and study its magnetic, thermal and electrical properties. An analysis of the magnetic entropy and magnetization indicates that the weak magnetic anisotropy in ErBi possibly derives from the mixing effect, namely the anisotropic ground state of Er3+ (4f11) mingles with the isotropic excited state through exchange interaction. At low temperature, an extremely large magnetoresistance (~104%) with a parabolic magnetic-field dependence is observed, which can be ascribed to the nearly perfect electron-hole compensation and ultrahigh carrier mobility. When the magnetic field is rotated in the ab (ac) plane and the current flows in the b axis, the angular magnetoresistance in ErBi shows a twofold (fourfold) symmetry. Similar case has been observed in LaBi where the anisotropic Fermi surface dominates the low-temperature transport. Our theoretical calculation suggests that near the Fermi level ErBi shares similarity with LaBi in the electronic band structures. These findings indicate that the angular magnetoresistance of ErBi could be mainly determined by its anisotropic Fermi surface topology. Besides, contributions from several other possibilities, including the spin-dependent scattering, spin-orbit scattering, and demagnetization correlation to the angular magnetoresistance of ErBi are also discussed.

The past decade has witnessed the burgeoning discovery of a variety of topological states of matter with distinct nontrivial band topologies. Thus far, most of materials studied possess two-dimensional or three-dimensional electronic structures, with only a few exceptions that host quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) topological electronic properties. Here we present the clear-cut evidence for Dirac fermions in the quasi-1D telluride TaNiTe5. We show that its transport behaviors are highly anisotropic and we observe nontrivial Berry phases via the quantum oscillation measurements. The nontrivial band topology is further corroborated by first-principles calculations. Our results may help to guide the future quest for topological states in this new family of quasi-1D ternary chalcogenides., Comment: 5 figures, 1 table

Synergic effect of electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling is an emerging topic in topological materials. Central to this rapidly developing area are the prototypes of strongly correlated heavy-fermion systems. Recently, some Ce-based compounds are proposed to host intriguing topological nature, among which the electronic properties of CeSb are still under debate. In this paper, we report a comprehensive study combining magnetic and electronic transport measurements, and electronic band structure calculations of this compound to identify its topological nature. Quantum oscillations are clearly observed in both magnetization and magnetoresistance at high fields, from which one pocket with a nontrivial Berry phase is recognized. Angular-dependent magnetoresistance shows that this pocket is elongated in nature and corresponds to the electron pocket as observed in LaBi. Nontrivial electronic structure of CeSb is further confirmed by first-principle calculations, which arises from spin splitting in the fully polarized ferromagnetic state. These features indicate that magnetic-field can induce nontrivial topological electronic states in this prototypical Kondo semimetal.

New, analytic solutions of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics are presented, describing expanding fireballs with Hubble-like velocity profile and ellipsoidal symmetry, similar to fireballs created in heavy ion collisions. We find that with these specifications, one obtains solutions where the shear viscosity essentially does not influence the time evolution of the system, thus these solutions are particularly adept tools to study the effect of bulk viscosity alone, which always results in a slower decrease of energy density as well as temperature compared to the case of perfect fluid. We investigate different scenarios for the bulk viscosity and find qualitatively different effects on the time evolution which suggests that there is a possibility to infer the value of bulk viscosity from energy density and temperature measurements in high-energy heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

SS433 is the only Galactic binary system known to persistently accrete at highly super-critical (or hyper-critical) rates, similar to those in tidal disruption events, and likely needed to explain the rapid growth of those very high redshift quasars containing massive SMBHs. Probing the inner regions of SS433 in the X-rays is crucial to understanding this system, and super-critical accretion in general, but is highly challenging due to obscuration by the surrounding wind, driven from the accretion flow. NuSTAR observed SS433 in the hard X-ray band across multiple phases of its 162 day super-orbital precession period. Spectral-timing tools allow us to infer that the hard X-ray emission from the inner regions is likely being scattered towards us by the walls of the wind-cone. By comparing to numerical models, we determine an intrinsic X-ray luminosity of $\ge$ 2$\times$10$^{37}$ erg/s and that, if viewed face on, we would infer an apparent luminosity of $>$ 1$\times$10$^{39}$ erg/s, confirming SS433's long-suspected nature as an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). We present the discovery of a narrow, $\sim 100$s lag due to atomic processes occurring in outflowing material travelling at least 0.14-0.29c, which matches absorption lines seen in ULXs and -- in the future -- will allow us to map a super-critical outflow for the first time., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phenomena associated with correlation effects have been widely observed in the phase diagrams of unconventional superconducting families. Exploration of the correlation between the normal state NFL, regardless of its microscopic origins, and the superconductivity has been argued as a key to unveiling the mystery of the high-Tc pairing mechanism. Here we systematically investigate the pressure-dependent in-plane resistivity and Hall coefficient (RH ) of a high-quality 112-type Fe-based superconductor Ca1-xLaxFe1-yCoyAs2 (x = 0.2,y = 0.02). With increasing pressure, the normal-state resistivity of the studied sample exhibits a pronounced crossover from non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid behaviors. Accompanied with this crossover, Tc is gradually suppressed. In parallel, the extremum in the Hall coefficient RH (T ) curve, possibly due to anisotropic scattering induced by spin fluctuations, is also gradually suppressed. The symbiosis of NFL and superconductivity implies that these two phenomena are intimately related. Further study on the pressure-dependent upper critical field reveals that the two-band effects are also gradually weakened with increasing pressure and reduced to the one-band Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg limit in the low-Tc regime. Overall, our paper supports the picture that NFL, multigap, and extreme RH (T ) are all of the same magnetic origin, i.e., the spin fluctuations in the 112 iron arsenide superconductors.

We highlight some of the interesting properties of a new and finite, exact family of solutions of 1 + 1 dimensional perfect fluid relativistic hydrodynamics. After reviewing the main properties of this family of solutions, we present the formulas that connect it to the measured rapidity and pseudo-rapidity densities and illustrate the results with fits to p+p collisions at 8 TeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 $ TeV., Comment: Invited talk of T. A known exact and accelerating solution of relativistic hydrodynamics for perfect fluids is utilized to describe pseudorapidity densities of $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV Pb$+$Pb and $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV $p$$+$$p$ collisions at LHC. We evaluate a conjectured initial energy densities $\epsilon_{\rm corr}$ in these collisions, and compare them to Bjorken's initial energy density estimates, and to results for Pb$+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ and 8 TeV., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric compounds has attracted sustained interest in the last decades. Here we present a detailed study on the transport, thermodynamic properties and the band structure of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor La$_7$Ir$_3$ ($T_c$ $\sim$2.3 K) that was recently proposed to break the time-reversal symmetry. It is found that La$_7$Ir$_3$ displays a moderately large electronic heat capacity (Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma_n$ $\sim$ 53.1 mJ/mol $\text{K}^2$) and a significantly enhanced Kadowaki-Woods ratio (KWR $\sim$ 32 $\mu\Omega$ cm mol$^2$ K$^2$ J$^{-2}$) that is greater than the typical value ($\sim$ 10 $\mu\Omega$ cm mol$^2$ K$^2$ J$^{-2}$) for strongly correlated electron systems. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ was seen to be nicely described by the single-band Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model down to very low temperatures. The hydrostatic pressure effects on the superconductivity were also investigated. The heat capacity below $T_c$ reveals a dominant s-wave gap with the magnitude close to the BCS value. The first-principles calculations yield the electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$ = 0.81 and the logarithmically averaged frequency $\omega_{ln}$ = 78.5 K, resulting in a theoretical $T_c$ = 2.5 K, close to the experimental value. Our calculations suggest that the enhanced electronic heat capacity is more likely due to electron-phonon coupling, rather than the electron-electron correlation effects. Collectively, these results place severe constraints on any theory of exotic superconductivity in this system.

The presence of neutron stars in at least three ultraluminous X-ray sources is now firmly established and offers an unambiguous view of super-critical accretion. All three systems show long-timescale periods (60-80 days) in the X-rays and/or optical, two of which are known to be super-orbital in nature. Should the flow be classically super critical, i.e. the Eddington limit is reached locally in the disc (implying surface dipole fields that are sub-magnetar in strength), then the large scale-height flow can precess through the Lense-Thirring effect which could provide an explanation for the observed super-orbital periods. By connecting the details of the Lense-Thirring effect with the observed pulsar spin period, we are able to infer the moment-of-inertia and therefore equation-of-state of the neutron star without relying on the inclination of, or distance to the system. We apply our technique to the case of NGC 7793 P13 and demonstrate that stronger magnetic fields imply stiffer equations of state. We theoretically investigate the chiral topological excitons emerging in the monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, where a bulk energy gap of valley excitons is opened up by a position dependent external magnetic field. We find two emerging chiral topological nontrivial excitons states, which exactly connects to the bulk topological properties, i.e., Chern number =2. The dependences of the spectrum of the chiral topological excitons on the width of the magnetic field domain wall as well as the magnetic filed strength are numerically revealed. The chiral topological valley excitons are not only important to the excitonic transport due to prevention of the backscattering, but also give rise to the quantum coherent control in the optoelectronic applications., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Agent-based modeling is a powerful simulation technique to understand the collective behavior and microscopic interaction in complex financial systems. Recently, the concept for determining the key parameters of the agent-based models from empirical data instead of setting them artificially was suggested. We first review several agent-based models and the new approaches to determine the key model parameters from historical market data. Based on the agents' behaviors with heterogenous personal preferences and interactions, these models are successful to explain the microscopic origination of the temporal and spatial correlations of the financial markets. We then present a novel paradigm combining the big-data analysis with the agent-based modeling. Specifically, from internet query and stock market data, we extract the information driving forces, and develop an agent-based model to simulate the dynamic behaviors of the complex financial systems., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1504.01811

Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) might have been assembled relatively late (z<1) via mergers. By exploiting the high-resolution HST/ACS imaging, we find four BCGs (COSMOS-P 125516, 102810, 036694 and 089357) in major dry merging in 29 X-ray clusters at $0.3 \le z \le 0.6$ in the Cosmological Evolutionary Survey (COSMOS). These BCGs show prominent but quiescent double nuclei with a magnitude difference of $\delta m<1.5$ and a projected separation of $r_p<$ 10 kpc. Clear signatures of interaction such as extended plumes and/or significant asymmetries are also observed in their residual images. We infer a major merger rate of $0.55\pm0.27$ merger per Gyr at $z\sim0.43$ assuming the merger time-scale estimate of Kitzbichler & White (2008). This inferred rate is significantly higher than the rate in the local Universe ($0.12\pm0.03$ at $z\sim0.07$) presented in Liu et al. (2009). We estimate that present-day BCGs increase their luminosity (mass) by $\sim35\pm15$ per cent $(f_{mass}/0.5)$ via major dry mergers since $z=0.6$, where $f_{mass}$ is the mean mass fraction of companion galaxies accreted onto the central ones. Although the statistical uncertainty due to our small sample size is relatively large, our finding is consistent with both recent observational and theoretical results. Furthermore, in conjunction with our previous findings in Liu et al. (2009), the discovery of these intermediate-redshift merging BCGs is clear evidence of ongoing assembly of BCGs via major dry mergers over the last $\sim$6 Gyr., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures and 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

With the network methods and random matrix theory, we investigate the interaction structure of communities in financial markets. In particular, based on the random matrix decomposition, we clarify that the local interactions between the business sectors (subsectors) are mainly contained in the sector mode. In the sector mode, the average correlation inside the sectors is positive, while that between the sectors is negative. We investigate the spatial and temporal structures of four financial markets in Greater China. In particular, we uncover different characteristics of the four markets by analyzing the sector and subsector structures which are detected through the random matrix theory. Meanwhile, we observe that the Taiwan and Hongkong stock markets show a negative return-volatility correlation, i.e., the so-called leverage effect. The Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets are more complicated. Before the year 2000, the two markets exhibit a strong positive return-volatility correlation, which is called the anti-leverage effect. After 2000, however, it gradually changes to the leverage effect. We also find that the recurrence interval distributions of both the trading volume volatilities and price volatilities follow a power law behavior, while the exponents vary among different markets., Comment: 7 figures. We investigate the large-fluctuation dynamics in financial markets, based on the minute-to-minute and daily data of the Chinese Indices and German DAX. The dynamic relaxation both before and after the large fluctuations is characterized by a power law, and the exponents $p_\pm$ usually vary with the strength of the large fluctuations. The large-fluctuation dynamics is time-reversal symmetric at the time scale in minutes, while asymmetric at the daily time scale. Careful analysis reveals that the time-reversal asymmetry is mainly induced by external forces. It is also the external forces which drive the financial system to a non-stationary state. We point out the possibility of occurring instabilities in Laughlin liquids of rotating dipolar fermions with zero thickness. Previously such a system was predicted to be the Laughlin liquid for filling factors being greater and equal to 1/7. However, from intra-Landau-level excitations of the liquid in the single-mode approximation, the roton minima become negative and Laughlin liquids are unstable for filling factors being less and equal to 1/7. With the random matrix theory, we study the spatial structure of the Chinese stock market, American stock market and global market indices. After taking into account the signs of the components in the eigenvectors of the cross-correlation matrix, we detect the subsector structure of the financial systems. The positive and negative subsectors are anti-correlated each other in the corresponding eigenmode. The subsector structure is strong in the Chinese stock market, while somewhat weaker in the American stock market and global market indices. We show the possible existence of the Wigner crystal (WC) in the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) regime. We find that the Landau-level mixing (LLM) will lower the energy of the WC significantly in the high-density regime. The WC is lower in energy than the FQH liquid in the high-density regime. We conclude that the crystal phase is expected at high density for rotating dipolar gases, which is consistent with non-rotating dipolar gases, but is inconsistent with the low-density conclusion from Baranov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 200402 (2008)], where the effect of LLM is ignored., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

We have investigated the behavior and stability of a Wigner crystal of rotating dipolar fermions in two dimensions. Using an ansatz wave function for the ground state of rotating two-dimensional dipolar fermions, which occupy only partially the lowest Landau level, we study the correlation energy, elastic moduli and collective modes of Wigner crystals in the lowest Landau level. We then calculate the mean square of the displacement vector of Wigner crystals. The critical filling factor, below which the crystalline state is expected, is evaluated at absolute zero by use of the Lindeman's criterion. We find that the particle (hole) crystal is locally stable for filling factor is less than 1/15 (between filling factors 14/15 and 1), where the stable regime of the crystal is much narrower than the result from Baranov, Fehrmann and Lewenstein, [Phys. We investigate the large-volatility dynamics in financial markets, based on the minute-to-minute and daily data of the Chinese Indices and German DAX. In the strong field molecular tunneling ionization theory of Tong et al. [Phys. Rev. A 66, 033402 (2002)], the ionization rate depends on the asymptotic wavefunction of the molecular orbital from which the electron is removed. The orbital wavefunctions obtained from standard quantum chemistry packages in general are not good enough in the asymptotic region. Here we construct a one-electron model potential for several linear molecules using density functional theory (DFT). We show that the asymptotic wavefunction can be improved with an iteration method and after one iteration accurate asymptotic wavefunctions and structure parameters are determined. With the new parameters we examine the alignment-dependent tunneling ionization probabilities for several molecules and compare with other calculations and with recent measurements, including ionization from inner molecular orbitals.

Both radiative and mechanical feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei have been found to be important for the evolution of elliptical galaxies. We compute how a shock may be driven from a central black hole into the gaseous envelope of an elliptical galaxy by mechanical as well as radiative feedback (in the form of nuclear winds) using high resolution 1-D hydrodynamical simulations. We calculate the synchrotron emission from the electron cosmic rays accelerated by the shocks (not the jets) in the central part of elliptical galaxies, and we also study the synchrotron spectrum's evolution using the standard diffusive shock acceleration mechanism, which is routinely applied to the scaled volume case of supernova remnants. We find good agreement quantitatively between the synchrotron radio emission produced via this mechanism with extant observations of elliptical galaxies which are undergoing outbursts. Additionally, we also find that synchrotron optical and X-ray emission can co-exist inside elliptical galaxies during a certain phase of evolution subsequent to central outbursts. In fact, our calculations predict a synchrotron luminosity of $\sim 1.3\times 10^6 L_{\odot}$ at the frequency 5 GHz (radio band), of $\sim 1.1\times 10^6 L_{\odot}$ at $4.3\times10^{14}$ Hz (R band, corresponding to the absolute magnitude -10.4), and of $\sim 1.5\times 10^{7} L_{\odot}$ at $2.4\times10^{17}$ Hz (soft X-ray, 0.5 -- 2.0 keV band)., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, resubmitted to ApJ, add one more figure, typos corrected

We study the semi-classical motion of holes by exact numerical solution of the Luttinger model. The trajectories obtained for the heavy and light holes agree well with the higher order corrections to the abelian and the non-abelian adiabatic theories in Ref. [1] [S. Murakami et al., Science 301, 1378(2003)], respectively. It is found that the hole trajectories contain rapid oscillations reminiscent of the "Zitterbewegung" of relativistic electrons. Pion-nucleus elastic scattering at energies above the Delta(1232) resonance is studied using both pi+ and pi- beams on 12C, 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb. The present data provide an opportunity to study the interaction of pions with nuclei at energies where second-order corrections to impulse approximation calculations should be small. The results are compared with other data sets at similar energies, and with four different first-order impulse approximation calculations. Significant disagreement exists between the calculations and the data from this experiment.

A relativistic extension of the particle-particle hole-hole ring-diagram many-body formalism is developed by using the Dirac equation for single-particle motion in the medium. Applying this new formalism, calculations are performed for nuclear matter. The results show that the saturation density is improved and the equation of state becomes softer as compared to corresponding Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations. Using the Bonn A potential, nuclear matter is predicted to saturate at an energy per nucleon of --15.30 MeV and a density equivalent to a Fermi momentum of 1.38 fm$^{-1}$, in excellent agreement with empirical information.
