Abstract Background Despite the adverse effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on type 2 diabetes and the beneficial role of physical activity (PA), the influence of PM2.5 on the relationship between PA and type 2 diabetes remains unclear. Methods In this prospective study with 71,689 participants, PA was assessed by a questionnaire and was categorized into quartiles for volume and three groups for intensity. Long‐term PM2.5 exposure was calculated using 1‐km resolution satellite‐based PM2.5 estimates. PM2.5 exposure and PA's effect on type 2 diabetes were assessed by cohort‐stratified Cox proportional hazards models, individually and in combination. Results In 488,166 person‐years of follow‐up, 5487 incident type 2 diabetes cases were observed. The association between PA and type 2 diabetes was modified by PM2.5. Compared with the lowest quartile of PA volume, the highest quartile was associated with reduced type 2 diabetes risk in low PM2.5 stratification (≤65.02 µg/m3) other than in high PM2.5 stratification (>65.02 µg/m3), with the hazard ratio (HR) of 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.66–0.85) and 1.10 (95% CI: 0.99–1.22), respectively. Similar results were observed for PA intensity. High PM2.5 exposure combined with the highest PA levels increased the risk of type 2 diabetes the most (HR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.59–2.01 for PA volume; HR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.64–2.02 for PA intensity). Conclusion PA could reduce type 2 diabetes risk in low‐pollution areas, but high PM2.5 exposure may weaken or even reverse the protective effects of PA. Safety and health benefits of PA should be thoroughly assessed for long‐term polluted residents.

Abstract To validate the feasibility of a fiber-optic pressure sensor-based pressure measurement device for monitoring intrarenal pressure and to analyze the effects of ureteral acess sheath (UAS) type, surgical location, perfusion flow rate, and measurement location on intrarenal pressure (IRP). The measurement deviations and response times to transient pressure changes were compared between a fiber-optic pressure sensing device and a urodynamic device IRP in an in vitro porcine kidney and in a water tank. Finally, pressure measurements were performed in anesthetized female pigs using fiber-optic pressure sensing device with different UAS, different perfusion flow rates, and different surgical positions at different renal calyces and ureteropelvic junctions (UPJ). The relationship of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and insulin resistance remains inclusive. Our study aimed to investigate this association in the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR). Specifically, we examined the associations between long-term PM2.5 exposure and three surrogate indicators of insulin resistance: the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), TyG with waist circumference (TyG-WC) and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR). Additionally, we explored potential effect modification of dietary intake and components. Generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the associations between PM2.5 and the indicators with an unbalanced repeated measurement design. Our analysis incorporated a total of 162,060 observations from 99,329 participants. Each 10 μg/m3 increment of PM2.5 was associated with an increase of 0.22 % [95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.20 %, 0.25 %], 1.60 % (95 % CI: 1.53 %, 1.67 %), and 2.05 % (95 % CI: 1.96 %, 2.14 %) in TyG, TyG-WC, and METS-IR, respectively. Overuse of sulfonamides in aquaculture and agriculture leads to residual drugs that cause serious pollution of the environment. However, the residues of sulfonamides in the environment are not unique, and the existing microbial degradation technology has a relatively low degradation rate of sulfonamides. Therefore, in this study, a Pseudomonas stutzeri strain (DLY-21) with the ability to degrade four common SAs was screened and isolated from aerobic compost. Under optimal conditions, the DLY-21 strain degraded four sulfonamides simultaneously within 48 h, and the degradation rates were all over 90%, with the average degradation rates of SAs being sulfoxide (SDM) ≈ sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) > sulfa quinoxaline (SQ) > sulfadiazine (SQ). In addition, the main compounds of the strain DLY-21-degrading SAs were identified by LC-MS analysis. On this basis, four detailed reaction pathways for SA degradation were deduced. This is the first report of the use of a P. stutzeri strain to degrade four sulfonamide antibiotics (SQ, SDM, SCP, and SM1), which can improve the removal efficiency of sulfonamide antibiotic pollutants and thus ameliorate environmental pollution. Abstract Background Population‐based epidemiological evidence regarding the association between fruit and vegetable intake and the incidence of hypertension is inconsistent. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of new‐onset hypertension. Methods Based on the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China‐PAR), 58,981 Chinese adults without hypertension at baseline were included. Information on fruit and vegetable intake was collected using a food‐frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident hypertension. Results During 640,795 person‐years of follow‐up, 21,008 new cases of hypertension were recorded. Compared with participants in the lowest quintile (Q1) of total fruit and vegetable (TFV) intake, the HRs (95% CIs) of incident hypertension were 0.90 (0.86–0.95), 0.85 (0.81–0.90), 0.82 (0.78–0.86), and 0.83 (0.78–0.88) for the Q2 to Q5 group (ptrend

Metabolic network models have become increasingly precise and accurate as the most widespread and practical digital representations of living cells. The prediction functions were significantly expanded by integrating cellular resources and abiotic constraints in recent years. However, if unreasonable modeling methods were adopted due to a lack of consideration of biological knowledge, the conflicts between stoichiometric and other constraints, such as thermodynamic feasibility and enzyme resource availability, would lead to distorted predictions. In this work, we investigated a prediction anomaly of EcoETM, a constraints-based metabolic network model, and introduced the idea of enzyme compartmentalization into the analysis process. Through rational combination of reactions, we avoid the false prediction of pathway feasibility caused by the unrealistic assumption of free intermediate metabolites. This allowed us to correct the pathway structures of l-serine and l-tryptophan. A specific analysis explains the application method of the EcoETM-like model and demonstrates its potential and value in correcting the prediction results in pathway structure by resolving the conflict between different constraints and incorporating the evolved roles of enzymes as reaction compartments. Notably, this work also reveals the trade-off between product yield and thermodynamic feasibility. Our work is of great value for the structural improvement of constraints-based models.

The utilization of sheet structure composites as a viable conductive filler has been implemented in polymer-based electromagnetic shielding materials. However, the development of an innovative sheet structure to enhance electromagnetic shielding performance remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a novel design incorporating silver-modified nanosheet self-assembled hollow spheres to optimize their performance. The unique microporous structure of the hollow composite, combined with the self-assembled surface nanosheets, facilitates multiple reflections of electromagnetic waves, thereby enhancing the dissipation of electromagnetic energy. The contribution of absorbing and reflecting electromagnetic waves in hollow nanostructures could be attributed to both the inner and outer surfaces. When multiple reflection attenuation is implemented, the self-assembled stack structure of nanosheets outside the composite material significantly enhances the occurrence of multiple reflections, thereby effectively improving its shielding performance. The structure also facilitates multiple reflections of incoming electromagnetic waves at the internal and external interfaces of the material, thereby enhancing the shielding efficiency. Simultaneously, the incorporation of silver particles can enhance conductivity and further augment the shielding properties. Finally, the optimized Ag/NiSi-Ni nanocomposites can demonstrate superior initial permeability (2.1 × 10−6 H m−1), saturation magnetization (13.2 emu g−1), and conductivity (1.2 × 10−3 Ω•m). This work could offer insights for structural design of conductive fillers with improved electromagnetic shielding performance.

Effective construction project planning relies on addressing constraints related to materials, labor, equipment, and others. Planning meetings are typical venues for stakeholders to identify, communicate, and remove constraints. However, a critical gap exists in lacking an automated approach to identify, classify, analyze, and track constraint discussions during onsite planning meetings. Therefore, this research aims to 1. develop a natural language processing model to classify constraints in meeting discussions; 2. uncover the discussion patterns of managers and foremen regarding various constraints; and 3. extract the root causes for constraints, evaluate their impacts, and prepare managers to develop practical solutions for constraint removal. This research collected meeting transcripts from 94 onsite planning meetings of a building project, spanning 263,836 words. Next, this research leveraged a general pretrained transformer (GPT) to segment discussion dialogs into topics. A Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)-based model was developed to categorize constraint types for each topic. The constraint patterns among meeting attendees were assessed. Furthermore, a GPT-based tool was devised to track root causes, impacts, and solutions for various constraints. Test results revealed an 8.8% improvement in constraint classification accuracy compared with the traditional classification model. An occupational characteristic in constraint discussion was observed in that the management team tended to balance their focus on various constraints, while foremen concentrated on more practical issues. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by leveraging language models to analyze construction planning meetings. The findings facilitate project managers in establishing constraint logs for diagnosing and prognosticating planning issues.

【Objective】To study the physiological response of different bitter gourd materials at seedling stages to high temperature stress, preliminarily evaluate the heat resistance of this materials, and provide theoretical basis for the subsequent breeding of heat-resistant varieties of bitter gourd.【Method】This study used 10 high-generation inbred lines (KG1-KG10) and 6 hybrid varieties (KG11-KG16) of bitter gourd as test materials. Different bitter gourd materials were subjected to high temperature cycling at 40 ℃ /12h during the day and 25 ℃ /12h at night for 3 days. The relative electrical conductivity (REC), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, proline (Pro) content, and antioxidant enzyme activity of seedling bitter gourd leaves were measured. And the heat resistance of these 16 bitter gourd materials was preliminarily evaluated using the membership function method.【Result】The relative electrical conductivity (REC) of the leaves of 16 bitter gourd materials increased during the seedling stage under high temperature compared with normal temperature conditions. Among them, the bitter gourd materials with significant differences in increase were KG1, KG2, KG9, KG10, KG11, KG13, KG14, KG15, and KG16. Except for KG1 and KG2, the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the other 14 bitter gourd materials decreased. Among them, the bitter gourd materials with significant differences in decrease amplitude were KG3, KG4, KG5, KG6, KG8, KG10, KG11, KG12, KG13, KG14, KG15, and KG16. The content of proline (Pro) also increased and decreased, with 6 bitter gourd materials showing an increase in Pro content in their leaves. The bitter gourd materials with significant differences in increase were KG1, KG2, KG3, KG4, and KG10; However, 10 bitter gourd materials showed a decrease in Pro content in their leaves, KG6, KG7, KG8, KG9, KG11, KG14, KG15, and KG16 showed significant decrease. Among the antioxidant enzyme activities, the peroxidase (POD) activity of leaves of 16 bitter gourd materials increased significantly, while the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) increased and decreased. The SOD activity of bitter gourd materials KG5 and KG14 decreased, while the SOD activity of the other 14 bitter gourd materials increased to varying degrees. The bitter gourd materials with significant differences in increase were KG1, KG2, KG3, KG4, KG6, KG7, KG8, KG9, KG10, KG11, KG12, KG15, and KG16; The CAT activity of bitter gourd materials KG8, KG10, KG12, and KG16 significantly increased, while the CAT activity of the other 12 bitter gourd materials decreased to varying degrees. The bitter gourd materials with significant differences in decline were KG1, KG2, KG3, KG4, KG5, KG7, KG9, KG11, KG13, and KG14. Through comprehensive evaluation using the membership function method, it was preliminarily determined that the heat resistance of these 16 bitter gourd materials is in the following order: KG1 > KG2 > KG16 > KG11 > KG10 > KG3 > KG9 > KG12 > KG15 > KG4 > KG13 > KG8 > KG6 > KG5 > KG7 > KG14.【Conclusion】Different bitter gourd materials have undergone different changes in six physiological indicators under high temperature stress, further indicating that these six physiological indexes have varying degrees of correlation with the heat resistance of bitter gourd. Preliminary evaluation showed that the KG1, KG2, KG16, KG11, and KG10 bitter gourd materials with better heat resistance have potential application value and can be utilized in subsequent bitter gourd heat resistance breeding.

Graphene oxide is a new type of carbon nanomaterial, which has excellent characteristics, such as biocompatibility, chemical stability, high dispersion, large specific surface area, and rich oxygen containing functional groups. Graphene oxide, as a promising research field of nanomaterials, has received widespread attention and shown broad application prospects in many fields such as aerospace, medicine, new energy, and biosensors. In recent years, graphene oxide has also been widely concerned and applied in the field of modern agricultural technology, bringing new opportunities and challenges to the development of modern sustainable agriculture. This paper summarized the research progress of domestic and foreign scholars on the application of graphene oxide in the field of agriculture, including the effects of graphene oxide on crop growth and development (seed germination, branch and leaf growth, root growth), which improved the stress resistance, yield and quality of crops; To develop graphite oxide based fertilizers with slow and controlled release function, as well as improve fertilizer utilization and reduce environmental risks; It also can be used as pesticide carrier and synergist to prevent and control crop diseases and pests, so as to achieve the goal of slow release and efficient utilization; Graphene oxide as adsorbent or degradation bacteria fixative to achieve the remediation of contaminated soil is discussed, providing new technologies and methods for the remediation of contaminated soil; Graphene, as a highly sensitive humidity sensor, can realize real-time monitoring of soil moisture and non-destructive monitoring of plant growth. Finally, the future research direction of graphene oxide in the field of agriculture was discussed. At present, the application of graphene oxide technology in agriculture is still in the initial stage, and there is more work to be done to realize large-scale commercial application. With the deepening of research on graphene oxide in the agricultural field and the expansion of its application scope, it is expected to realize the transformation of agricultural production methods and technologies, realize the efficient utilization of resources, reduce environmental hazards caused by agricultural production, and help promote the development of green low-carbon agriculture.

Arched roof is widely used because of its efficient aerodynamic shape. The rise height (F) of the common arched roof does not change. However, arched roof with variable cross-section gradually appears in the design of various large-scale venues, and there is little research on such roof. Therefore, this paper takes the variable cross-section arched roof as the research object, analyzes the factors that affect the roof through numerical simulation in order to obtaining its wind pressure coefficient (CP) and distribution pattern. The numerical simulation results show that under 3 wind directions of 0°, 45°, and 90°, the windward side of the roof is subjected to severe suction and the CP changes significantly as the rise height to span (F/D) ratio increases. Abstract Background Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is underrecognized, and its association with coronary artery disease (CAD) remains limited, especially in China. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of FH and its relationship with CAD in a large Chinese cohort. Methods FH was defined using the Make Early Diagnosis to Prevent Early Death (MEDPED) criteria. The crude and age‐sex standardized prevalence of FH were calculated based on surveys of the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China‐PAR) project during 2007−2008. The associations of FH with incident CAD and its major subtypes were estimated with the cohort‐stratified multivariate Cox proportional hazard models based on the data from the baseline to the last follow‐up (2018−2020). Results Among 98,885 included participants, 190 participants were defined as FH. Crude and age−sex standardized prevalence and 95% confidence interval (CI) of FH were 0.19% (0.17%–0.22%) and 0.13% (0.10%–0.16%), respectively. Abstract Background His-Purkinje system pacing (HPSP), including his-bundle pacing (HBP) and left bundle branch area pacing (LBBaP), imitates the natural conduction of the heart as an alternative to biventricular pacing (BVP) in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). However, the feasibility and efficacy of HPSP were currently only evidenced by studies with a limited sample size, so this study aimed to provide a comprehensive assessment through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods In order to compare the clinical outcomes associated with HPSP and BVP in patients for CRT, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science database were searched from inception to April 10, 2023. Clinical outcomes of interest including QRS duration (QRSd), left ventricular (LV) function and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification, pacing threshold, echocardiographic and clinical response, hospitalization rate of HF and all-cause mortality were also extracted and summarized for meta-analysis. Results A total of 13 studies (ten observational studies and three randomized studies) involving 1,121 patients were finally included. The patients were followed up for 6–27 months. This paper proposes a method and an algorithm called Q-sorting for reinforcement learning (RL) problems with multiple cumulative constraints. The primary contribution is a mechanism for dynamically determining the focus of optimization among multiple cumulative constraints and the objective. Executed actions are picked through a procedure with two steps: first filter out actions potentially breaking the constraints, and second sort the remaining ones according to the Q values of the focus in descending order. The algorithm was originally developed upon the classic tabular value representation and episodic setting of RL, but the idea can be extended and applied to other methods with function approximation and discounted setting. Numerical experiments are carried out on the adapted Gridworld and the motor speed synchronization problem, both with one and two cumulative constraints. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed Q-sorting in that cumulative constraints are honored both during and after the learning process. The advantages of Q-sorting are further emphasized through comparison with the method of lumped performances (LP), which takes constraints into account through weighting parameters. Q-sorting outperforms LP in both ease of use (unnecessity of trial and error to determine values of the weighting parameters) and performance consistency (6.1920 vs. 54.2635 rad/s for the standard deviation of the cumulative performance index over 10 repeated simulation runs). It has great potential for practical engineering use.

To alleviate the problems of environmental pollution and energy crisis, aggressive development of clean and alternative energy technologies, in particular, water splitting, metal–air batteries, and fuel cells involving two key half reactions comprising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction (ORR), is crucial. In this work, an innovative hybrid comprising heterogeneous Cu/Co bimetallic nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed on a nitrogen-doped carbon layer (Cu/Co/NC) was constructed as a bifunctional electrocatalyst toward HER and ORR via a hydrothermal reaction along with post-solid-phase sintering technique. Thanks to the interfacial coupling and electronic synergism between the Cu and Co bimetallic nanoparticles, the Cu/Co/NC catalyst showed improved catalytic ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.865 V and an excellent stability of more than 30 h, even compared to 20 wt% Pt/C. The Cu/Co/NC catalyst also exhibited excellent HER catalytic performance with an overpotential of below 149 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and long-term operation for over 30 h.

Radiation pneumonitis (RP) is a prevalent and fatal complication of thoracic radiotherapy due to the lack of effective treatment options. RP primarily arises from mitochondrial injury in lung epithelial cells. The mitochondrial-derived peptide MOTS-c has demonstrated protective effects against various diseases by mitigating mitochondrial injury. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 20 Gy of lung irradiation (IR) and received daily intraperitoneal injections of MOTS-c for 2 weeks. MOTS-c significantly ameliorated lung tissue damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress caused by radiation. Meanwhile, MOTS-c reversed the apoptosis and mitochondrial damage of alveolar epithelial cells in RP mice. Furthermore, MOTS-c significantly inhibited oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage in MLE-12 cells and primary mouse lung epithelial cells. Mechanistically, MOTS-c increased the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) level and promoted its nuclear translocation. Notably, Nrf2 deficiency abolished the protective function of MOTS-c in mice with RP. In conclusion, MOTS-c alleviates RP by protecting mitochondrial function through an Nrf2-dependent mechanism, indicating that MOTS-c may be a novel potential protective agent against RP.

Silicon (Si) is abundant in the lithosphere, and previous studies have confirmed that silicon plays an important role in plant growth. Higher plants absorb soluble silicon from soil through roots which is deposited in plant tissues mainly in the form of phytoliths. Based on previous studies, the research progress in silicon and phytoliths in the structural protection, enhancement on photosynthesis and transpiration of plants and plant growth and stress resistance was reviewed. Meanwhile, gaps in phytolith research, including phytolith morphology and function, impact of diverse environmental factors coupling with phytoliths, phytolith characteristics at different stages of plant development and phytoliths in regional vegetation are identified. The paper intends to promote the wider application of phytolith research findings and provides reference for further research on phytoliths.

ABSTRACTMangifera indica L. cv. Keitt is a cold-stress fruit plant native to China's drought river valley. Chilling stress affects productivity. Understanding the mechanisms of chilling stress is important to increasing chilling resistance in mango. Leaves of Keitti were subjected to 4 °C for 0, 3, 6, and 9 h for RNA-Seq-based transcriptome analysis, respectively. The chlorophyll content, carotenoid content, catalase, and peroxidase activities significantly increased during 9 h. The leaves responded to the stress by enhancing photosynthetic pigment content and antioxidant enzyme activity. After 3 h of chilling, 410 genes were differentially expressed. WRKY70 and PLD1 were significantly up-regulated after 9 h. Compared to 9 and 0 h, there were 1123 DEG. The DEGs are enriched in hormonal signal transduction, secondary metabolites, and the abiotic stress response. Similarly, the transcriptional factor families including NCED2, MYB73, and HLH162 up-regulated. The study will promote research on the development of chill-resistant mangoes.

In this paper, a new type of heterojunction photocatalyst RuS2/Bi2WO6 was prepared. The H2 yield of the RuS2/Bi2WO6 sample is up to 18.72 mmolg−1 after 4 h, which is almost five times of Bi2WO6 (4.51 mmolg−1). The structure and performance were analyzed by XRD, SEM, XPS, PL and photocatalytic experiments. It was found that the RuS2/Bi2WO6 heterojunction can not only accelerate the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, but also broaden their absorption band. The low-cost Ru is sulfurized to form a heterojunction with Bi2WO6, which offers a new perspective for synthesizing photocatalysts, and improves the capability of hydrogen evolution.

Abstract Background The effect of long‐standing prediabetes or its transition on incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association of changes in fasting blood glucose (FBG) status with the risk of developing CVD. Methods This research included 12 145 Chinese adults aged 35–74 years and free from diabetes mellitus (DM) at baseline. Study participants were cross‐classified into six categories according to glucose at the first (1998–2001) and the second visit after 8 years: normal fasting glucose (NFG; 50–99 mg/dl), impaired FBG (IFG; 100–125 mg/dl), and DM. Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for CVD associated with transition of glucose status. Results During a median follow‐up of 5.5 years, 373 incident CVD cases occurred. Compared with participants remaining persistent NFG, a higher risk of developing CVD was identified among those remaining persistent IFG, progressing to DM from NFG or from IFG, with the multivariate‐adjusted HR (95% CI) of 1.792 (1.141, 2.816), 1.723 (1.122, 2.645) and 1.946 (1.120, 3.381), respectively. Furthermore, when stratified by glucose status at baseline, persistent IFG and progression from IFG to DM still increased CVD risk in comparison with reversion from IFG to NFG, with the multivariate‐adjusted HR (95% CI) of 1.594 (1.003, 2.532) and 1.913 (1.080, 3.389). Conclusions Participants with long‐standing IFG and progressing to DM had a higher risk of developing CVD. Further well‐designed studies are warranted to assess the association of other phenotypes or prediabetes duration with CVD.

Abstract Background Genetic variants within nearly 1000 loci are known to contribute to modulation of blood lipid levels. However, the biological pathways underlying these associations are frequently unknown, limiting understanding of these findings and hindering downstream translational efforts such as drug target discovery. Results To expand our understanding of the underlying biological pathways and mechanisms controlling blood lipid levels, we leverage a large multi-ancestry meta-analysis (N = 1,654,960) of blood lipids to prioritize putative causal genes for 2286 lipid associations using six gene prediction approaches. Using phenome-wide association (PheWAS) scans, we identify relationships of genetically predicted lipid levels to other diseases and conditions. We confirm known pleiotropic associations with cardiovascular phenotypes and determine novel associations, notably with cholelithiasis risk. We perform sex-stratified GWAS meta-analysis of lipid levels and show that 3–5% of autosomal lipid-associated loci demonstrate sex-biased effects. Finally, we report 21 novel lipid loci identified on the X chromosome. Many of the sex-biased autosomal and X chromosome lipid loci show pleiotropic associations with sex hormones, emphasizing the role of hormone regulation in lipid metabolism. Conclusions Taken together, our findings provide insights into the biological mechanisms through which associated variants lead to altered lipid levels and potentially cardiovascular disease risk.

Background: The trade-off between the benefits of regular physical activity (PA) and the potentially detrimental effects of augmented exposure to air pollution in highly polluted regions remains unclear. This study aimed to examine whether ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure modified the impacts of PA volume and intensity on hypertension risk. Methods: We included 54,797 participants without hypertension at baseline in a nationwide cohort of the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR) project. PA volume and intensity were assessed by questionnaire, and high-resolution (1 km ×1 km) PM2.5 estimates were generated using a satellite-based model. Abstract Background Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has been proven as a marker for detecting minimal residual diseases following systemic therapies in mid-to-late-stage non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) by multiple studies. However, fewer studies cast light on ctDNA-based MRD monitoring in early-to-mid-stage NSCLCs that received surgical resection as the standard of care. Methods We prospectively recruited 128 patients with stage I–III NSCLCs who received curative surgical resections in our Lung Cancer Tempo-spatial Heterogeneity prospective cohort. Plasma samples were collected before the surgery, 7 days after the surgery, and every 3 months thereafter. Targeted sequencing was performed on a total of 628 plasma samples and 645 matched tumor samples using a panel covering 425 cancer-associated genes. Tissue clonal phylogeny of each patient was reconstructed and used to guide ctDNA detection. Results The results demonstrated that ctDNA was more frequently detected in patients with higher stage diseases pre- and postsurgery. To investigate the difference in aroma between high aroma black tea and traditional congou black tea, electronic nose and GC-MS were used to investigate the key factors that differentiated the aroma quality of high aroma black tea from traditional congou black tea. The results showed that the high aroma black tea had a predominantly floral aroma, while the traditional congou black tea aroma presented a sweet aroma. GC-MS detected 78 volatile substances in the two black teas, among which linalool oxide, linalool, methyl salicylate, pentanol, 2-cyclopropylethanol, (-)-carveol, β-cyclocitral, 2-ethylfuran, 1,3,8-menthatrien and 1,4-pentadiene were important aroma components to distinguish the different flavours of black tea. The total of the response values of the electronic nose detection of traditional congou black tea was significantly higher than that of high aroma black tea. The multivariate statistical analysis allowed S6 and S10 electrode signals for the identification of different flavours of black tea, and predicted that 1,4-pentadiene was an important volatile substance for the identification of different flavours of black tea. The results confirmed the aroma composition characteristics of high fragrant black tea and distinguished it from traditional congou black tea, and would provide a theoretical basis for further classification of different flavor black tea.

Rare metal (La or Nd) doped hexahydroxy strontium stannate with different dopant contents was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route. The rare metal doped samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy, solid diffuse reflectance spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The morphology of the doped samples is closely relative to the rare metal dopant content transferring from the nanorods to nanoflakes and nanoscale particles for La and Nd doping, respectively. 2wt.% rare metal doped hexahydroxy strontium stannate possesses the smallest band gap value with 3.26 eV (La doping) and 3.25 eV (Nd doping) which enhances the charge carriers transfer efficiency. The rare metal doped hexahydroxy strontium stannate shows enhanced photocatalytic performance for the crystal violet degradation under ultra-violet (UV) light irradiation. 2wt.% rare metal doped hexahydroxy strontium stannate has the best photocatalytic activity for the removal of crystal violet under UV light irradiation for 120 min. The rare metal doped hexahydroxy strontium stannate possesses high stability, and is reusable for the crystal violet degradation.

Abstract Objective To establish the predicted value of pulmonary function determined by impulse oscillometry (IOS) in children (4–17 years old) in China. Methods A total of 6270 healthy children aged 4–17 years in China were included. The Master Screen IOS pulmonary function device (Jaeger Co, Germany) was used to detect the respiratory impedance (Zrs), resonant frequency (Fres), respiratory system resistance (Rrs) and respiratory system reactance (Xrs) at various oscillation frequencies, and the indices above were analysed. Stepwise multivariate regression was used to establish the regression equation of related parameters of IOS in different sexes, ages, height, and weight. The toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs on normal tissues are still a major limiting factor in cancer treatment. In this paper, we report a metal-organic framework (Zn-Co ZIF) with chitosan-coated outer layer as a carrier for the drug adriamycin hydrochloride (DOX), a treatment for liver cancer, as a novel anti-cancer nanodrug-enhanced carrier. Gold nanoparticles, a good photothermal conversion agent, were combined with the target SH-RGD during surface functionalisation to prepare Zn-Co ZIF@DOX-CS-Au-RGD (ZD-CAR), a nanoplatform with good photothermal conversion properties and targeting for combined liver cancer therapy. ZD-CAR was developed after RGD accurately targeted the tumour and entered the tumour microenvironment (TME), it cleaves and releases the liver cancer therapeutic agent (DOX) in a weak acidic environment to effectively kill tumour cells. The metal skeleton cleavage releases Co2+, which catalyzes the production of oxygen from H2O2 to alleviate the tumour hypoxic environment. The dissolved oxygen could reach 14 mg/L after adding 80 mg/mL of ZD-CAR. Meanwhile, gold nanoparticles could convert light energy into heat energy under 808 NIR irradiation to induce local superheating and kill tumour cells. In summary, this study developed a nanoplatform that combines chemo-photothermal-targeted therapy. It has shown good therapeutic effeciency in cellular experiments and performance tests and has promising applications in anti-cancer therapy.

Abstract Background Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most primary lung cancer subtype, threatens human health globally. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been uncovered to affect multiple cancers progression. Nevertheless, the specific function of long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1806 (LINC01806) in NSCLC remains elusive. Methods RT-qPCR and western blot were involved in this study. The influence of LINC01806 on NSCLC was assessed by in vitro and in vivo assays. Via ChIP, RNA pull down, RIP, and luciferase reporter assays, the in-depth cellular mechanisms of LINC01806 in NSCLC were explored. Results LINC01806 expression was high in NSCLC cell lines. Functionally, LINC01806 knockdown impeded cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and stemness, along with tumor growth. As for its mechanism, signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) activated LINC01806 transcription in NSCLC. Furthermore, LINC01806 sequestered microRNA-4428 (miR-4428) to enhance notch receptor 2 (NOTCH2) expression, thus activating Notch signaling pathway. Finally, in vitro and in vivo assays jointly validated that LINC01806 exerted its function in NSCLC development via miR-4428/NOTCH2 pathway. Conclusion LINC01806 enhanced NOTCH2 expression to stimulate Notch signaling via sponging miR-4428, thereby facilitating NSCLC progression, which provided a novel mechanism for NSCLC therapeutic approaches. This study investigated the potential mechanism of action of tea polyphenols (TPs), one of the major active ingredients in tea, to enhance heat resistance in Drosophila and the attenuating effect of heat treatment of TPs on their efficacy. The results showed that TPs were able to prolong the average survival time of Drosophila under high-temperature stress (p < 0.05), but the effect of TPs in prolonging the survival time of Drosophila melanogaster was significantly reduced (p < 0.05) with increasing TP heat-treatment time until it disappeared. The composition of TPs changed after heat treatment. It was also shown that the weakening of the effect of TPs in improving the heat tolerance of Drosophila was related to the decrease in the content of catechins and phenolic acids in their fractions as well as with the increase in the content of laccase. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the effect of TPs on heat tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster was closely related to the longevity regulation pathway, the neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction signaling pathway, and the drug metabolism–cytochrome P450 pathway. Metabolomics analysis showed that the effect of TP intervention in improving the body’s heat tolerance was mainly related to amino acid metabolism and energy metabolism. However, thermal processing weakened the relevance of these transcriptomes and metabolomes. The present study reveals the mechanism of action by which heat-treated TPs affect the body’s heat tolerance, which is important for the development and utilization of the heat-protection function of tea.

In order to explore the origin differences of black tea metabolites, the metabolites in black tea produced in Fu 'an and Youxi of Fujian province were compared and analyzed by using sensory evaluation method and extensive targeting metabolomic determination method of ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The results showed that, Fu'an black tea mainly tasted of “mellow and soft”, while Youxi black tea of “mellow and sweet”. A total of 937 metabolites including of flavonoids, phenolic acids, lipids, organic acids, amino acids and their derivatives were identified by metabonomics in the black tea of the two regions, through the principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) could significantly distinguish different producing area of black tea, and identified 410 species of metabolites with significant difference. The relative content of 291 different metabolites in Youxi black tea was higher than that of Fu 'an black tea, among which Astragalin, EC, L-glutamine, L-aspartic acid, L-lysine, L-tryptophan, L-glutamic acid, chlorogenic acid, phenethylamine, vitexin-2''-O-rhamnoside might have important contributions to the formation of different taste and quality of black tea from the two regions. Metabolic pathway analysis showed that the metabolism levels of amino acids and flavonoids of black tea between the two places were significantly different, which might be the reason for the difference in the taste and quality of black tea between the two places. The research would provide a theoretical basis for the identification of tea origin.

In order to study the elastic contact fatigue problems of composite cylindrical roller bearing, through the three stages of contact fatigue crack initiation, propagation, and ablating of cylindrical roller bearing theoretically analyzed, the subsurface stress is one of the factors of contact fatigue damage. By finite element method and theoretical analytic method with solid cylindrical roller bearing contact surface, the size and distribution of shear stress are analyzed, and comparing the calculation results of two methods, the comparison results show that the finite element method to calculate the bearing contact problem is scientific and reasonable. Through the finite element method of cylindrical roller bearing and elastic composite cylindrical roller bearing subsurface shear stress and equivalent stress on the surface of numerical analysis, the calculation results show that the subsurface stress value of elastic composite cylindrical roller bearings was 31.65% smaller than that of ordinary cylindrical roller bearings, and the distribution of the maximum subsurface stress value of elastic composite cylindrical roller bearings was shallower than that of cylindrical roller bearings. The elastic composite cylindrical roller bearings have significant advantages over cylindrical roller bearings in terms of subsurface stress and have stronger resistance to contact fatigue damage. The finite element method is used to analyze the subsurface stress of elastic composite cylindrical roller bearings with different filling degrees. The results show that the subsurface shear stress and equivalent stress values of elastic composite cylindrical roller bearings with filling degrees of 55% to 65% are maintained at a relatively low level, and the depth of the maximum stress is minimal, which is basically distributed on the surface of the rolling body. The magnitude and distribution of subsurface stresses in elastic composite cylindrical roller bearings provide a reference for more reasonable structural design.

Prior studies on heavy metal heterojunction with carbon nanomaterials for dye-sensitized solar cells (D-SSCs) found that they were not only toxic but also had poor stability and led to a difficult synthesis. In this work, nanomaterials with flexible nonwoven sheets were employed to improve cell efficiency and were easily synthesized with high stability, durability, washability, and flexibility. By incorporating carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into the anode and counter electrodes, it is possible to boost photon efficiency by scattering the sunlight and turning a huge amount into current density. Here in this research, Textile carbon–based flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (TC-DSSC) with N-doped CQDs may significantly increase solar cell efficiency. Carbon-based nanoparticles stacked with textile apparel (nonwoven bamboo) sheets enabled the desired flexible end applications to be achieved. The prepared material significantly increased solar cell efficiency to 11.26% compared to 8.04% of the one without CQDs. Carbon-based nanomaterials are stacked with textile apparel (nonwoven bamboo) sheets to make them lightweight, highly flexible, wearable, and user-friendly. Furthermore, compared to pure expanded graphite on the nonwoven substrate, a single electrode incorporating CQDs offered low impedance and high current/voltage. On the other hand, when tested for photocatalytic activity using spectrophotometry, the proposed counter electrode made of expanded graphite, PAN, and CQDs loaded on nonwoven material completely degraded the methylene blue dye in a very short period of time. The N-CQDs may prove to be very stable with outstanding washing endurance anchored with expanded graphite layered on a nonwoven medium with an optimum thickness.

Background: High sodium intake is an important risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease. However, the association between gut microbiota composition and metabolomic profiles with dietary sodium intake and blood pressure (BP) is not well-understood. The metabolome, microbiome, and dietary salt intervention (MetaSalt) study aimed to investigate microbial and metabolomic profiles related to dietary sodium intake and BP regulation. Methods: This family-based intervention study was conducted in four communities across three provinces in rural northern China in 2019. Probands with untreated prehypertension or stage-1 hypertension were identified through community-based BP screening, and family members including siblings, offspring, spouses, and parents were subsequently included. All participants participated in a 3-day baseline examination with usual diet consumption, followed by a 10-day low-salt diet (3 g/d of salt or 51.3 mmol/d of sodium) and a 10-day high-salt diet (18 g/d of salt or 307.8 mmol/d of sodium). Differences in mean BP levels were compared according to the intervention phases using a paired Student's t-test. Results: A total of 528 participants were included in this study, with a mean age of 48.1 years, 36.7% of whom were male, 76.8% had a middle school (69.7%) or higher (7.1%) diploma, 23.4% had a history of smoking, and 24.4% were current drinkers. Abstract Background The association of psychological factors with postoperative pain has been well documented. The incorporation of psychoeducational intervention into a standard analgesia protocol seems to be an attractive approach for the management of acute postoperative pain. Our study aimed to evaluate the impact of psychoeducational intervention on acute postoperative pain in pulmonary nodule (PN) patients treated with thoracoscopic surgery. Methods In this study, 76 PN patients treated with thoracoscopic surgery and intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) plus psychoeducational evaluation and intervention were selected as the psychoeducational intervention group (PG). Another 76 PN patients receiving IV-PCA without psychoeducational intervention after thoracoscopic surgery, treated as the control group (CG), were identified from the hospital database and matched pairwise with PG patients according to age, sex, preoperative body mass index (BMI), opioid medications used for IV-PCA and the educational attainment of patients. Results The most common psychological disorders were anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity, which were recorded from 82.9% (63/76) and 63.2% (48/76) of PG patients. Background: Although both environmental and genetic factors were linked to coronary artery disease (CAD), the extent to which the association of air pollution exposure with CAD can be influenced by genetic risk was not well understood. Methods: A total of 41,149 participants recruited from the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR) were included. Genetic risk scores of CAD were constructed based on 540 genetic variants. Long-term PM2.5 exposures were assessed by adopting satellite-based PM2.5 estimations at 1-km resolution. We used stratified Cox proportional hazards regression model to examine the impact of PM2.5 exposure and genetic risk on CAD risk, and further analyzed modification effect of genetic predisposition on association between PM2.5 exposure and CAD risk. Results: During a median of 13.01 years of follow-up, 1,373 incident CAD events were observed. Long-term PM2.5 exposure significantly increased CAD risk, and the hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] were 1.27 (1.05–1.54) and 1.95 (1.57–2.42) among intermediate and high PM2.5 exposure groups compared to low PM2.5 exposure group. The relative risks of CAD were 40% (HR: 1.40, 95%CI: 1.18–1.66) and 133% (HR: 2.33, 95%CI: 1.94–2.79) higher among individuals at intermediate and high genetic risk than those at low genetic risk. BackgroundBilateral multiple ground glass opacities (GGOs) are observed in quite a part of patients with early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. For this so-called synchronous multiple primary lung cancer (sMPLC), targeting immune checkpoint is a favorable option in addition to surgical resection. The purpose of this study is to reveal the safety and efficacy of performing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) on patients with sMPLC and to explore the biomarkers of the efficacy.MethodsA total of 21 patients with sMPLC were enrolled and all included cases were pathologically confirmed adenocarcinoma after conducting surgical treatment for unilateral GGOs. ICIs of Sintilimab were then used to target programmed death 1 (200mg i.v., Q3W) for up to 10 cycles. Seven patients of them received the other surgery for contralateral GGOs, and multiomics assessments, including neoantigens, somatic mutations, and methylated loci, were further performed to investigate potential biomarkers.ResultsGrade 1 or 2 treatment-related adverse events (AEs) occurred in most of the patients (12/21, 57.1%), and one subject withdrawn for grade 3 AEs. For the seven patients underwent twice surgeries, twelve and thirteen GGOs were achieved before and after the use of ICIs separately, and a favorable efficacy was observed among six lesions after immunotherapy (> 50% pathologic tumor regression). Tumor infiltration T-cell and B-cell were further shown to be associated with the biological activity of ICIs. According to mechanism-based multiomics analyses, MUC19- and PCDHB5- mutations were indicated to correlate with a favorable prognosis of sMPLC underwent immunotherapy, and our results suggested that immunogenetic mutation and associated promoter methylation could provide a quantitative explanation for the pathologic response of GGOs.ConclusionOur study provides evidence that the use of ICIs contributed favorable efficacy and safety to patients with sMPLC. Immune infiltration and immunogenic biomarkers are revealed to be implications of performing ICIs on sMPLC. Black tea (Fuyun 6) samples collected from three regions, Youxi, Fu’an, and Datian, were analysed by automatic thermal desorption-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (ATD-GC–MS) combined with the electronic nose (E-nose) technique to investigate the aroma composition differences between black teas from different regions. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the ATD conditions for extracting the aroma components from the black tea. The results revealed that the optimal conditions for aroma component accumulation from black tea samples included a sample weight of 2.8 g, an adsorption time of 39 min, an adsorption temperature of 75 °C, and a cold trap temperature of −30 °C. The ATD-GC–MS analyses identified a total of 71 aroma components in the black tea samples, of which 31 were utilized to differentiate the origins of the black teas. Additional aroma activity analyses indicated that benzyl alcohol, linalool, hexanal, octanal, and nonanal had odour activity values (OAVs) greater than 10. Additionally, the OAV of decanal exceeded 100, indicating its significant contribution to the aroma profile of Fuyun 6 black tea. The E-nose results demonstrated the ability to differentiate the black tea samples from the three different origins. This study successfully identified the specific aroma substances associated with different tea origins, providing valuable insights into the aroma characteristics of black teas from various regions.

A high-performance, low-voltage, transparent, metal-semiconductor-metal ultraviolet (UV) photodetector (PD) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, based on gold (Au) asymmetric interdigitated (aIDT) electrodes with thicknesses well below 10 nm. A 7-nm-thick Au film, with a visible transmittance of 80.4% and a sheet resistance of 11.55 Ω/sq, is patterned into aIDT electrodes on a ZnO active layer, whose average visible transmittance is up to 74.3%. Meshing the pads further improves the overall transmittance of the device. Among all fabricated devices, the PD with the aIDT finger width ratio of 1:4 performs the best. Very low dark currents are achieved at 0, 0.5 and 1 V, allowing for high responsivities and specific detectivities to the UV light. It is also a fast device, especially under the biases of 0.5 and 1 V. The comprehensive performances are comparable and even superior to those of the reported devices. The asymmetric Schottky junctions induced by the aIDT electrodes under UV illumination are the main mechanism for the low-voltage operation of our transparent PD, which is promising to be applied widely.

Background: Inconsistent results have been reported in developed countries for relationships between sedentary behavior and cancer incidence and mortality, and evidence from the Chinese population is scarce. This study aimed to investigate such relationships in large Chinese population-based prospective cohorts and to explore the joint effect and interaction of sedentary behavior and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) on these relationships. Methods: We included 95,319 Chinese adults without cancer from 3 large cohorts and assessed their sedentary behavior and physical activity with a unified questionnaire. Cancer incidence and mortality were confirmed by interviewing participants or their proxies and checking hospital records and death certificates. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) for cancer and mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results: During 559,002 person-years of follow-up, 2388 cancer events, 1571 cancer deaths, and 4562 all-cause deaths were recorded. Sedentary behavior was associated with increased risk of developing cancer and deaths in a dose–response manner. The recent applications of fully convolutional networks (FCNs) have shown to improve the semantic segmentation of very high resolution (VHR) remote-sensing images because of the excellent feature representation and end-to-end pixel labeling capabilities. While many FCN-based methods concatenate features from multilevel encoding stages to refine the coarse labeling results, the semantic gap between features of different levels and the selection of representative features are often overlooked, leading to the generation of redundant information and unexpected classification results. In this article, we propose an attention-guided label refinement network (ALRNet) for improved semantic labeling of VHR images. ALRNet follows the paradigm of the encoder-decoder architecture, which progressively refines the coarse labeling maps of different scales by using the channelwise attention mechanism. A novel attention-guided feature fusion module based on the squeeze-and-excitation module is designed to fuse higher level and lower level features. In this way, the semantic gaps among features of different levels are declined, and the category discrimination of each pixel in the lower level features is strengthened, which is helpful for subsequent label refinement. ALRNet is tested on three public datasets, including two ISRPS 2-D labeling datasets and the Wuhan University aerial building dataset. Results demonstrated that ALRNet had shown promising segmentation performance in comparison with state-of-the-art deep learning networks. The source code of ALRNet is made publicly available for further studies.

Background: Recent studies have shown that alpha-1,3-mannosyltransferase (ALG3) promoted tumorigenesis and progression in multiple cancer types. Our study planned to explore the clinical implication and potential function of ALG3 in hepatocellular carcinoma.Materials and Methods: Data from public databases were used to analyze the ALG3 expression and its impact on the clinical significance of patients with HCC. The ALG3 expression was confirmed by qRT-PCR and Western blot. Immunohistochemistry was used to confirm the ALG3 expression and explore its clinical implication in HCC. KEGG, GO, and GSEA enrichment analyses were utilized to explore the biological pathways related to ALG3 in HCC. TIMER2.0 was applied to assess the association between ALG3 and immune infiltration. CCK8, MTT, and transwell assays were used to investigate the role of ALG3 downregulation in HCC cell lines.Results: qRT-PCR, WB, and IHC proved ALG3 was highly overexpressed in HCC tissues. The Kaplan–Meier analysis verified the overexpression of ALG3 was related to poor overall survival (p < 0.001). Multivariate cox regression analysis showed that the high ALG3 expression was an independent risk prognostic factor. GSEA and TIMER2.0 predicted that ALG3 participates in cell differentiation and cycle and correlates with immune cell infiltration. Transwell assay results showed that ALG3 silencing also impaired the invasion ability of HCC cells.Conclusion: ALG3 was overexpressed and considered a potential indicator of survival in HCC, and our findings provided a novel therapeutic target for HCC.

Abstract Background The involvement of lncRNA FEZF1-AS1 has been analyzed in many types of cancers, while its roles in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. We then explored the role of FEZF1-AS1 in NSCLC. Methods qPCR and western blot were performed to measure gene expression. FEZF1-AS1, miR-34a, and NOTCH-1 were overexpressed to analyze the relationship between them. Transwell assays were performed to analyze the effects of transfections on cell invasion and migration. Results FEZF1-AS1 was up-regulated in NSCLC patients. Increased expression levels of FEZF1-AS1 were observed with the increase in clinical stages. Bioinformatics analysis showed that miR-34a can bind with FEZF1-AS1. In NSCLC tissues, NOTCH-1 and FEZF1-AS1 were positively correlated. In NSCLC cells, over-expression of FEZF1-AS1 resulted in up-regulated expressions of NOTCH-1, while miR-34a over-expression mediated down-regulated expressions of NOTCH-1. In addition, FEZF1-AS1 and miR-34a did not alter each other, while bioinformatics analysis showed that miR-34a can bind FEZF1-AS1. Analysis of cell migration and invasion showed increased cell invasion and migration rates after FEZF1-AS1 and NOTCH-1 over-expression. MiR-34a played the opposite role and reduced the effects of FEZF1-AS1 over-expression. Conclusions FEZF1-AS1 promoted NSCLC cell migration and invasion through the up-regulation of NOTCH1 by serving as a sponge of miR-34a.

Abstract Background Mango is one of the world’s most important tropical fruits. It belongs to the family Anacardiaceae, which includes several other economically important species, notably cashew, sumac and pistachio from other genera. Many species in this family produce family-specific urushiols and related phenols, which can induce contact dermatitis. Results We generate a chromosome-scale genome assembly of mango, providing a reference genome for the Anacardiaceae family. Our results indicate the occurrence of a recent whole-genome duplication (WGD) event in mango. Duplicated genes preferentially retained include photosynthetic, photorespiration, and lipid metabolic genes that may have provided adaptive advantages to sharp historical decreases in atmospheric carbon dioxide and global temperatures. A notable example of an extended gene family is the chalcone synthase (CHS) family of genes, and particular genes in this family show universally higher expression in peels than in flesh, likely for the biosynthesis of urushiols and related phenols. Genome resequencing reveals two distinct groups of mango varieties, with commercial varieties clustered with India germplasms and demonstrating allelic admixture, and indigenous varieties from Southeast Asia in the second group. Landraces indigenous in China formed distinct clades, and some showed admixture in genomes. Conclusions Analysis of chromosome-scale mango genome sequences reveals photosynthesis and lipid metabolism are preferentially retained after a recent WGD event, and expansion of CHS genes is likely associated with urushiol biosynthesis in mango. Genome resequencing clarifies two groups of mango varieties, discovers allelic admixture in commercial varieties, and shows distinct genetic background of landraces.
