This work proposes an analysis of Torto Arado by Itamar Vieira Junior through the lens of terreiro-literature (Freitas, 2011), while also suggesting an expansion and new interpretation of the term. We understand corporeality, religiosity, circularity, and ancestry as fundamental elements for comprehending this novel, which employs the potency of jarê and the essence of Orishas and Encantados as anti-colonial weapons. We conclude that jarê is terreiro-literature, and Torto Arado is metaterreiro-literature due to its nature as a metaliterary text. Thus, the presence of Candomblé and its manifestations in the composition of the narrative represents a political agency that sheds light on the contributions of an African past and an amefrican present.

A new species Polacanthoderes shiraseae sp. nov. from three Antarctic regions (off Cape Darnley, off Totten Glacier, and in Lützow-Holm Bay) is described. In addition, type species of Polacanthoderes , Polacanthoderes martinezi , is redescribed. The new species is distinguished from P. martinezi by the presence of conspicuously thick lateroventral acicular spines on segments 8 and 9 and the presence of sublateral small acicular spines on segment 7. Both P. martinezi and P. shiraseae sp. nov. occasionally show intraspecific morphological variations in the position of some small acicular spines. The K2P genetic distances based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene sequences in P. shiraseae sp. nov. are 0–1.5%, equivalent to those in other echinoderid species. Phylogenetic analyses of Polacanthoderes based on the nuclear 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA gene sequences support the inclusion of the genus in Echinorhagata/Echinoderidae and suggest that the genus represents the most basal group of this order/family. JARE ,Zooplankton monitoring ,NORPAC net - Abstract
As part of the monitoring program of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE), zooplankton sampling using a NORPAC (NORth PACific) standard net has been routinely carried out since JARE-14 (1972/73 season) to estimate the long-term trends of abundance, species composition and their temporal/spatial variation in the uppermost 150 m of the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean. Two separate monitoring surveys were completed during JARE-58 (December 2016 to March 2017). The icebreaker Shirase has a fixed schedule and route, travel down longitude 110ºE each December and return along 150ºE each March, making its voyages ideal for long-term monitoring work in this region. We present data from its 2016/2017 voyage. In additions, a transects by the T/V Umitaka-maru was also carried out along 110ºE longitude in January 2017. Thus, this report provides the latest zooplankton data, forming part of the long-term monitoring of zooplankton carried out by JARE in this region for the last 40 years. These transect data can be used as time series and/or seasonal sets.

After the end of the Spanish Civil War, thousands of people took the way of exile. The hard conditions imposed by French authorities to these refugees got worse with the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. Spanish organizations such as the Servicio de Evacuación de Refugiados Españoles (SERE) and the Junta de Auxilio a los Republicanos Españoles (JARE) took care of them. This essay analyses the distribution of aid and the sending of refugees to America by both organizations, with special attention to the JARE, not forgetting questions that affected their work, as the extradition requests by the Franco regime and the policy of accepting refugees by the American countries.

INTERNATIONAL Geophysical Year, 1957-1958 , *MARINE science research , *GEOPHYSICAL observations , *LOGISTICS , *HISTORY of research ,ANTARCTIC exploration - Abstract
A brief history, organization, current scientific activities and logistics of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE), Japan's national Antarctic program, are introduced in relation to international frameworks to some extent. JARE was started on the occasion of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), an international scientific research campaign, planned 1957-1958 for geophysical observation on the globe. The government of Japan decided to participate in IGY with establishment of a Japanese Antarctic station Syowa on East Ongul Island, according to a proposal by the Science Council of Japan and continues JARE until now. Headquarters was established for JARE in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and decides plans for JARE. Operation and logistics of JARE is managed by the National Institute of Polar Research and many research institutions and universities participate in the JARE. The Antarctic Treaty System is a fundamental framework for the Antarctic research expedition and other non-governmental bodies like the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Program are also very important fora for international collaboration on Antarctic science and logistics, respectively. An in situ measurement system was developed for continuous observations of the mole fractions of atmospheric oxygen (defined as δ(O2/N2)) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and the continuous observation was conducted onboard the research vessel SHIRASE 5003 during its voyage between Australia and Syowa Station, Antarctica, in 2017–2018. The CO2 variation was low with respect to that of δ(O2/N2) in the Southern Ocean, suggesting that the land biospheric and fossil-fuel derived CO2 and O2 emissions negligibly influenced the observations. Therefore, the observed significant variations in the atmospheric O2/N2 can be attributed to the atmosphere-ocean gas exchange. During the southbound voyage in December 2017, we observed large spatial variations in δ(O2/N2) due to marine biological production on the western side of the cruise track. Oceanic O2 fluxes based on a simple model and atmospheric δ(O2/N2) variability were consistent with past oceanic observations. No clear longitudinal gradient in δ(O2/N2) was observed at latitudes toward south of 60° S in December 2017 and February–March 2018. However, local δ(O2/N2) maxima were observed in regions with active marine biological production in December 2017. These observations indicate that local O2 fluxes can also modify the spatial distribution of atmospheric δ(O2/N2) in the Southern Ocean.

Abstract This article addresses how the practitioners of jarê, an African-based religion that exists only in the Chapada Diamantina - a region of steep cliffs in the heart of the state of Bahia, northeast Brazil -, conceptualize death. The theme connects in complex ways with the history and the geography of the area, which has, for over a century, gravitated entirely around diamond prospecting activities. Jarê develops a sort of “telluric metaphysics” according to which the ground, the earth and the act of walking are interwoven into situations of life and death that are ritually elaborated during ceremonies. Jarê affirms that the life force of every person is conceived as an unstable and directable flux, the lability of which is processed according to differences in the concentration of energy as effected by ritual actions that can result in the death of participants.

Spatio-temporal variability in life cycle strategy of four pelagic Antarctic copepods, Rhincalanus gigas, Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus and Metridia gerlachei was studied, including their copepodite stage composition, using the multiyear samples taken off east Antarctica (90-160°E) in March 1988-1996. Except for R. gigas, the rare occurrence of adults indicated that the spawning activities ceased by mid-March in this research area. Younger copepodite stages appeared for C. propinquus compared to C. acutus, suggesting the late reproduction or slow growth in the former. Multiple regression analysis on the relationship between environmental variables and the copepodite stage composition showed that the population matured earlier in the warmer area for C. acutus, C. propinquus and M. gerlachei. The study demonstrated that the three species flexibly changed timing of the reproduction and development, and shifted their life cycle from one year to two years in the southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) area, responding to spatio-temporal environmental change caused by meandering of the ACC.

Analiza proizvodnih pokazatelja mlječnih koza i jaradi, pasmine francuska alpina, provedena je na ekološkom gospodarstvu. Prosječni dnevni prirasti i tjelesne mase jaradi do 108. dana života (122, 98 g i 16, 28 kg) u ekološkoj proizvodnji slični su onima u konvencionalnoj proizvodnji.

- Abstract
This article analyzes the group of Spanish Republic exiles that arrived in Santo Domingo after the end of the Spanish Civil War, their location in the island and the difficulties they faced in finding sufficiently stable jobs to be able to begin a new life. It also analyzes the help that these refugees received from the organizations created by Spanish exiles, first from the Spanish Republican Evacuation Service (SERE) which paid for their transport from Europe and immediately afterwards, by the Board of Assistance for Spanish Republicans (JARE), which, from the mid 1940s onwards, assisted them with their stay on the island and helped them find more suitable destinations., Resumen El presente artículo analiza, por un lado, el volumen de las exiliados republicanos españoles que llegaron a Santo Domingo desde el fin de la guerra civil española, su ubicación en la isla y las dificultades a las que tuvieron que hacer frente para encontrar una ocupación, lo suficientemente estable, que les permitiera reemprender una nueva vida.

In 1939, in the middle of the general crisis of the final civil war in Spain, a new crisis explodes which has it origins in the early times of the conflict in summer of 1936, and the constitutional anomalies that it generated. The government of the Second Republic (presided by Dr. Juan Negrín) and the government of the catalán Generalitat (presided by Lluís Companys) were confronted about the administration of the catalán government's economic founds and their application to help catalán refugee.

- Abstract
Members of expeditions to Antarctica may show changes in biological and physiological parameters involved in lipid, glucose, and thyroid hormone metabolism as they adapt to the environment; however, alterations in amino acid (AA) levels and sleep among expedition members in Antarctica have yet to be fully elucidated. We hypothesized that there would be alterations of blood AA levels, and ornithine (Orn) ingestion would affect biological parameters and sleep in Japanese expedition members during the summer in Antarctica. Japanese Antarctica Research Expedition members (22 people) who stayed in Antarctica for 3 months from December 2010 were examined, and a randomized double-blind study of Orn ingestion (400 mg/d) for 4 weeks was performed. Sleep conditions were evaluated subjectively by the Oguri-Shirakawa-Azumi (brief version) questionnaire. The blood of Japanese Antarctica Research Expedition members in Antarctica showed higher creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and ammonia levels than that in Japan. On blood AA analysis, aspartate, Orn, and serine were significantly higher, and alanine and tryptophan (Trp) were significantly lower in Antarctica than in Japan. The Trp ratio, the value of Trp divided by the sum of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and branched-chain AAs, was significantly lower in Antarctica than in Japan. Although sleep deteriorated during the stay in Antarctica, Orn ingestion, to some extent, improved sleep compared with the placebo group in Antarctica, suggesting that Orn is effective for people with heavy physical workloads in places such as Antarctica., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
