Abstract

Background: Collection of platelets by plateletpheresis is a relatively simple, safe and important adjunct to blood bank inventory for provision of platelet components. Recruitment of plateletpheresis donors is challenging since the selection criteria are more stringent compared to whole blood donation resulting in higher deferrals. The aim of the study is to assess the causes of deferral among donors who registered for plateletpheresis so as to ascertain the preventable and temporary deferrals for reinduction of these donors. Materials and Methods: Donor deferral data was collected retrospectively for donors who registered in the period of July 2022 - June 2023 in a tertiary care hospital attached blood center. The donors were selected or deferred based on the guidelines issued under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the rules therein with guide transfusion services in India. Results: Of the 759 donors registered for the plateletpheresis procedure during the study period, 235 (30.96%%) donors donated and 524(69.04%) donors were deferred. Among 524 deferred donors, the reason for deferral was unavailable in 44 donors while 245 (51%) donors were deferred due to lack of suitable venous access with 133 (54%) of them being deferred due to single vein availability. Temporary deferrals were seen in 171 (36%) donors of which low platelet count was the most common (89 donors). Permanent deferrals were done in 16 donors where previous sensitization history was the cause in 9 donors. Conclusion: Donor deferrals diminish the donor pool and demotivate the donors from further donations. While some factors like lack of adequate venous access or seroreactivity cannot be altered, the conversion of replacement donors to a voluntary donor pool can help in overcoming shortages. The use of Information, education and communication sessions to increase social awareness may substantially decrease the deferral rates. Further, training and bolstering confidence in phlebotomists to collect platelets from donors with single vein can increase the donor pool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Anaemia is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency disorder in the world that affects all age groups particularly preschool-age children and pregnant women. WHO estimates that 42% of children less than five years of age and 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anaemic. So, it is important to monitor one's haemoglobin levels regularly. Generally people don't tend to go to hospitals for regular check-ups until it's a serious issue and people living in remote areas do not have easy access to diagnostic centres and also invasive methods are painful. If one buys a device, the device maintenance would cost more than the actual device's cost. So, an app called “ANEGOO” is being designed using image processing that collects users basic details and predicts haemoglobin values, suggests precautions accordingly, along with a data logger to compare previous values, within seconds, at any point of time with very good accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose: To compare the diagnostic ability of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) derived radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) measured capillary density (CD) and inside the optic nerve head (ONH) CD measurements to differentiate between the normal and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes. Methods: AngioVue disc OCT-A images were obtained and assessed in 83 eyes of POAG patients and 74 age matched healthy eyes. RPC CD was quantitatively measured in the peripapillary area within 3.45 mm circle diameter around the ONH and inside the ONH in 8 equally divided sectors, using Bar – Selective Combination of Shifted Filter Responses method after the suppressing large vessels. Area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was used to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the two scanning regions of CD to differentiate between the normal and POAG eyes. 9. FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF COLON TARGETED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM OF BUSULFAN: USING COMBINATION OF pH AND TIME DEPENDANT SYSTEMS

Abstract

In present work Colon targeting drug delivery system was developed for Busulfan an anticancer drug by using combination of delayed systems one is pH dependant and other is time dependant delayed system.  Rapid release core tablet (RRCT) formulations were prepared using Busulfan drug with different disintegrating agents in different concentrations. The pre-compression and post-compression parameters of all formulations were determined and the values were found to be satisfactory. From the In-vitro dissolution studies, F6 formulation with 12% Hydroxy propyl cellulose (HPC) was the best formulation. For optimized RRCT formulation press coat was done by using Xanthum Gum and Ethyl Cellulose (EC) in different ratios. Press coated tablet delays the drug release up to 8 hours based on the nature and concentrations of the polymer. Each press coated tablet was coated using enteric solution made of HPMC phthalate, Myvacet and color dissolved in ethanol. Enteric press coated tablets (EPCT) were delayed drug release up to 2hrs in fed condition due to pH dependant delayed system.  Based on dissolution studies of EPCT formulations, C3OPF formulation was optimized and showed delayed release pattern in a much customized manner. As a result of this study it may be concluded that the colon targeted drug delivery tablets using a combination of two polymers in optimized concentrations can be used to increase the delayed action of drug release to deliver the drug in a delayed manner. Abstract

To analyse the expansion of radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) network with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in normal human eyes and correlate RPC density with retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFLT) at various distances from the optic nerve head (ONH) edge. Fifty eyes of 50 healthy subjects underwent imaging with RTVue XR-100 Avanti OCT. OCT-A scans of Angio disc (6 × 6 mm) and Angio retina (8 × 8 mm) were combined to create a wide-field montage image of the RPC network. RPC density and RNFLT was calculated at different circle diameter around the ONH, and their correlation was measured. In the arcuate region, RPC was detected as far as 8.5 mm from the ONH edge, but not around the perifoveal area within 0.025 ± 0.01 mm2. The mean RPC density (0.1556 ± 0.015) and RNFLT (245.96 ± 5.79) were highest at 1.5 mm from ONH margin, and there was a trend in its decline, in a distance-dependent manner, with the least density at 8.5 mm (all P
