Soil tillage and cover crops impact spontaneous vegetation in agrosystems. Soil tillage destroys seedlings and can affect the soil seedbank. Cover crops compete with naturally occurring spontaneous species. Our aim was to gain insight into how soil tillage (here, the false seedbed technique) and cover crops impact the spontaneous vegetation in fallows preceding banana crops. In a fallowed field in Guadeloupe (French West Indies), two factors were combined in a split-plot design: the soil tillage modality before cover crop sowing (with or without the false seedbed technique) and the cover crop species (Crotalaria spectabilis, Pueraria phaseoloïdes, a 50/50 mix of Brachiaria decumbens + Brachiaria ruziziensis, a spontaneous vegetation control). On a monthly basis, in three permanent quadrats per sub-plot, all spontaneous species were identified and their numbers counted, while calculating the species richness and Shannon's diversity index. The spontaneous vegetation dynamics contrasted depending on the treatment. From 7 months post-sowing the species density, richness and Shannon index were significantly lower in treatments with B. decumbens + B. ruziziensis and P. phaseoloïdes, while in treatments with C. spectabilis, the species density and richness were significantly higher with than without the false seedbed technique. These effects were probably related to differences in the competitive ability of the cover crop used and, to a lesser extent, to the false seedbed effects on the soil seedbank. This is the first study to show that under a tropical climate, sown cover crop species combined with different soil tillage modalities have substantial impacts on the species density, richness and diversity of the spontaneous plant community over a 1-year period. These results could help farmers in their weed control strategies by providing them with a deeper understanding of the effects of practices on the spontaneous plant community.

Le recours aux intrants de synthèse dans les monocultures intensives entraine une pollution et une dégradation des régulations écologiques de ces systèmes. Dans les systèmes de production bananiers des Antilles françaises, la mise en place d'une jachère après les cycles de production permet d'établir des communautés végétales diversifiées, capables de restaurer ces fonctions écologiques et de fournir des services écosystémiques à l'agriculteur. L'installation de ces communautés peut être orientée par des pratiques comme le semis d'une plante de services (PdS) et un travail du sol avant le semis des PdS. Nous faisons l'hypothèse que les communautés qui vont émerger, associant PdS et espèces spontanées aptes à pousser avec elles, pourront fournir des services d'amélioration de la fertilité azotée du sol, de sa structure, et de contrôle de spontanées dont la gestion s'avère difficile. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier les effets de l'implantation d'une PdS et du travail du sol avant semis de la PdS sur la communauté végétale et les services rendus par cette communauté diversifiée. Il a été décliné en trois questions de recherche: 1) En quoi les communautés associant PdS et spontanées mises en place sous l'influence de deux filtres (PdS et travail du sol) diffèrent au niveau de leur densité, richesse spécifique et composition ? 2) Comment le développement et la composition de la communauté de spontanées et le développement de la population de PdS sont-ils orientés par les compétitions entre PdS et spontanées? 3) Peut-on mettre en évidence l'impact de la communauté végétale sur les services d'amélioration de la fertilité azotée du sol et de sa structure par des relations entre structure fonctionnelle de la communauté et indicateurs de services ? Pour cela, une approche fonctionnelle basée sur la description des traits des espèces a été adoptée. Le cadre effet-réponse de Lavorel & Garnier (2002) a ainsi été adapté au cas d'étude pour comprendre la mise en place de la communauté végétale sous l'action des filtres imposés à cette communauté, puis l'impact de cette communauté sur les services ciblés. Un essai au champ a été conduit sur un an, selon un dispositif en split-plot combinant deux modalités de travail du sol avant semis et trois PdS ainsi qu'un témoin de végétation spontanée. Les compositions des communautés ont été suivies chaque mois. Les traits associés aux compétitions entre espèces ainsi qu'à l'amélioration de la fertilité azotée du sol et de sa structure ont été mesurés sur les 12 espèces les plus fréquentes dans l'essai. Des indicateurs des services ciblés ont été mesurés en début d'expérimentation, puis après 7 et 12 mois. Les résultats montrent la mise en place de communautés aux densités, richesses spécifiques et compositions différentes entre traitements. Des relations de compétitions entre espèces et entre PdS et spontanées ont été partiellement démontrées sur la base de l'observation de traits fonctionnels liés à l'acquisition des ressources lumineuses et de la structure fonctionnelle des communautés. Une relation nette a été établie entre biomasse des PdS et biomasse des spontanées. Enfin, des relations entre marqueurs fonctionnels des communautés et indicateurs des services ont été établies. Certaines communautés ont permis d'améliorer la fertilité azotée du sol ou sa structure, mais ont eu des difficultés à contrôler les spontanées dont la gestion est difficile pour l'agriculteur. De plus, amélioration de la fertilité azotée et structure du sol ont été reliées à des caractéristiques différentes des couverts que nous n'avons pu observer dans une même communauté, suggérant un compromis à trouver entre ces deux services. L'originalité scientifique de cette thèse a résidé dans l'application du cadre effet-réponse de Lavorel & Garnier (2002) au cas de la jachère en bananeraie. Les résultats pourront aider au choix des espèces et couverts à insérer dans les systèmes de culture bananiers diversifiés.

International audience; The argument of the article is to show that reading the practices and landscapes by the means of the cultural ecosystem services approach in traditional societies comes up against an incompatibility of premises, those of the western scientific approach being too different from those of village representations. The demonstration starts from the practice of conserving the fallow treelet Pteleopsis suberosa for religious cultural purposes implemented by the members of the Sèmè society, a group of farmers in Burkina Faso. This point leads to identify different levels of representations relating to the earth, the human being and the invisible. It is shown that while the attribution of the practices related to the representations to classes of ecosystem services is formally possible, only do that is to miss the essential. The article discusses the aporia of applying to one society a theoretical construction based upon the way of thinking of another society.; L’argument de l’article est de montrer qu’une lecture des pratiques et des paysages par l’approche des services écosystémiques culturels dans des sociétés traditionnelles se heurte à une incompatibilité des prémisses, celles de l’approche occidentale scientifique étant très différentes de celles des représentations villageoises. La démonstration part d’une pratique de conservation de l’arbuste de jachère Pteleopsis suberosa à des fins culturelles religieuses par les membres de la société Sèmè, un groupe de cultivateurs du Burkina Faso. Cette porte d’entrée conduit à mettre au jour différents niveaux de représentations relatifs à la terre, à l’être humain et à l’invisible. Il est montré que si leur attribution à des classes de services écosystémiques est formellement possible, on manque l’essentiel si l’on se contente de cela. L’article discute l’aporie qui consiste à appliquer à une société une construction théorique élaborée selon le mode de pensée d’une autre.

Au Sahel, sous 500 mm de pluie annuelle, l'érosion éolienne constitue un facteur important de la dégradation de l'environnement. Elle cause des pertes en terre et réduit la productivité des sols. Ce travail, conduit dans le Sud-Ouest du Niger, vise à quantifier les flux d'érosion éolienne à l'aide de pièges à sable de type BSNE. L'étude a été menée de 2006 à 2014, sur une parcelle d'abord en culture, puis mise en jachère. Il ressort que les surfaces cultivées sont très sensibles à l'érosion, particulièrement au début de la saison des pluies (mai-juillet), où plus de 90 % des flux sont enregistrés. Une fois la parcelle en jachère, la densification progressive du couvert végétal a provoqué une forte réduction des flux. Par rapport aux résultats obtenus sur le champ en culture, ils ont diminué de 28 % dès la première année de mise en jachère et de 94 % lors de la cinquième année. Once the plot in fallow, the progressive densification of the vegetation cover caused a sharp reduction of fluxes. Compared to the results obtained during the cultivated period, they decreased by 28 % in the first year of fallowing and by 94 % in the fifth.

Background and aims: Legumes integrated in crop rotations are intended to improve crop nitrogen (N) supply and yield. In conservation agriculture (CA) systems under low input conditions on highly weathered tropical soils, experimental evidence for these benefits is lacking. To understand the mechanisms and evaluate the impact of the legume N on the subsequent crop, an in-depth study on N dynamics in the soil-plant system was conducted. Methods : In Madagascar, a CA based crop rotation with the perennial forage legume Stylosanthes guianensis (stylo) and upland rice (rice/stylo – stylo - rice/stylo) was established under three fertilization regimes. In addition, rice was grown in a non-CA bare fallow rotation without fertilizer. Over the three years N2 fixed in stylo shoots, the incorporation of stylo shoot (mulch) N into soil N pools and mulch N uptake by rice was quantified using 15N techniques and mulch and stylo root residue decomposition was investigated in a litterbag study. Results: N2 fixed in stylo shoots ranged from 96 to 122 kg N ha−1. Between 50 to 70% of stylo mulch and root residues decomposed during the third cropping season. Without fertilizer, grain yield of rice after the fallow with stylo was about 70% greater than after bare fallow, corresponding to 11 kg N ha−1 greater N uptake. Recoveries of stylo mulch N after rice harvest were on average 64% in soil, with about 3% in each of the microbial and mineral N pools, with 39% on the soil surface, and 6% in the rice crop. The N input via stylo seed, leaf litter and belowground N totalled about three times the amount of N contained in stylo mulch, which usually is considered as major rice N source. Conclusions: Legumes, like stylo, can improve crop N supply and yield in low input CA cropping systems on highly weathered tropical soils. To explain the impact and mechanisms involved requires a consideration of all legume-N components beyond the mulch N present at the onset of the rice-cropping season.

New farming technologies such as improved fallow of herbaceous legumes have been developed over the last 20 years as alternatives to traditional yam cropping systems in areas where shifting cultivation is no more possible. One aim of this research was to analyze actual adoption by smallholders of such a technology and influencing factors in the Southern Guinea Savannah in Benin (West Africa). On the other hand, a second objective was to measure agronomic and economic performances of the innovative yam-based cropping systems in comparison with the usual ones under producers’ natural and socioeconomic circumstances in order to discuss the technology potential for large scale adoption. Smallholders with limited land access now develop as usual cropping systems a one-year fallow of Andropogonon gayanus–yam rotation or a maize–yam rotation. Innovative sedentary yam-based systems consist of an Aeschynomene histrix intercropped with maize–yam rotation or a Mucuna pruriens intercropped with maize–yam rotation. Factors potentially affecting adoption were included in a polynomial logit model. Agronomic and economic performances were assessed by the multiple regression and net present value of the 4-years double rotation. Ranking matrix was used to highlight constraints that may impede adoption. Benefits, lessons, and challenges are discussed in this article.

Le developpement de l'agriculture sur les iles Loyaute (Nouvelle-Caledonie) conduit a l'utilisation plus intensive de materiel agricole qui est susceptible de modifier les caracteristiques physiques et structurales des sols et d'avoir une incidence sur l'enracinement des cultures. Quatre situations ont ete etudiees : une jachere, une graminee perenne, deux cultures de mais, l'une soumise a un travail classique, l'autre a un travail minimum. Dans chaque cas, une description morphologique, des mesures penetrometriques et des comptages racinaires ont ete realises sur un profil de sol. Les caracterisations des profils culturaux realises dans ces differentes conditions culturales montrent : une modification importante de l'etat structural, notamment dans l'horizon de surface, a la suite de la mise en culture, que le type de travail du sol n'a toutefois pas eu une incidence majeure sur la compacite du sol et l'enracinement des plantes cultivees, et que la diminution de la densite racinaire avec la profondeur ne semble pas liee a l'existence d'horizons compacts ou de zones compactees par le travail du sol. To study food production systems of six communities located on six different islands of Vanuatu we selected villages in zones of low and high population pressures. We measured land availability, soil fertility, genetic resources, average yields of food gardens, their plant densities, traditional knowledge richness (TKR), and household incomes and expenses. We analyzed a total of 224 plots belonging to 30 farmers and identified 13 root crop species with the total number of cultivars in communities ranging from 74 to 261. Surprisingly, villages under high population pressure have shorter fallow periods but higher yields. In both zones, women have higher TKR. In high population pressure villages there are signs of soil fertility reduction and mineral depletion but no signs of significant decrease in soil fertility after the first year of cultivation, indicating that root crop species remove limited amounts of total N and minerals per year. The purchase of imported foods is associated with a sociocultural change in diets rather than pressures on land or soils. Our quantitative and integrative methodology allows clear differentiation between villages under different pressures and can be used to assess levels of resilience and vulnerability.

It is crucial to understand the adaptive mechanisms of woody plants facing periodic drought to assess their vulnerability to the increasing climate variability predicted in the Sahel. Guiera senegalensis J.F.Gmel is a semi-evergreen Combretaceae commonly found in Sahelian rangelands, fallows and crop fields because of its value as an agroforestry species. We compared canopy leafing, and allometric measurements of leaf area, stem area and stem length and their relationships with leaf water potential, stomatal conductance (gs) and soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance (KS-L), in mature and current-year resprouts of G. senegalensis in Sahelian Niger. In mature shrubs, seasonal drought reduced the ratio of leaf area to cross-sectional stem area (AL : AS), mainly due to leaf shedding. The canopy of the current-year resprouts remained permanently leafed as the shrubs produced leaves and stems continuously, and their AL : AS ratio increased throughout the dry season. Their KS–L increased, whereas gs decreased. West, Brown and Enquist's (WBE) model can thus describe allometric trends in the seasonal life cycle of undisturbed mature shrubs, but not that of resprouts. Annual clear cutting drives allometric scaling relationships away from theoretical WBE predictions in the current-year resprouts, with scaling exponents 2.5 times greater than those of mature shrubs. High KS-L (twice that of mature shrubs) supports this intensive regeneration process. The adaptive strategy described here is probably common to many woody species that have to cope with both severe seasonal drought and regular disturbance over the long term.

Forest seed bank assessments are scarce in Madagascar and thus little is known about the relationships between the seed banks and vegetation dynamics on which secondary succession processes rely. The objective of this paper is to analyse the effects of slash-and-burn agriculture on soil seed banks and their dynamics along secondary forest successions. Aujourd'hui menacées par la déforestation industrielle, les forêts d'Afrique centrale hébergent pourtant depuis des millénaires des populations d'essarteurs pratiquant l'agriculture itinérante sur brûlis. Afin de mieux comprendre les remarquables capacités d'adaptation dont ont su faire preuve ces populations forestières, ainsi que la pérennité de leur mode de subsistance, le savoir-faire traditionnel des Ntumu du Sud-Cameroun et leurs pratiques paysannes sont étudiés à travers une démarche pluridisciplinaire et une connaissance approfondie du terrain. Certaines pratiques ancestrales comme la protection d'arbres orphelins dans les champs vivriers sont garantes de la durabilité du système: À travers des phénomènes écologiques complexes, ces arbres contribuent en effet à accélérer la régénération forestière dans les jachères, condition indispensable au maintien d'un équilibre entre forêt et parcelles cultivées. À l'aube du XXIe siècle, ce témoignage rare sur le mode de vie des Ntumu est précieux au moment où la déforestation massive entraîne de profondes mutations et affecte leur mode de vie.

Les connaissances recentes sur le milieu et les modes d'exploitation du delta interieur du Niger sont relativement abondantes pour l'elevage et la peche, mais plus rares pour la riziculture traditionnelle. Les etudes concernant la filiere riz portent sur l'Office du Niger, qui assure 50% de la production totale de riz du Mali. Les investissements du gouvernement malien, soutenus par les bailleurs de fonds exterieurs, se sont orientes vers le reamenagement des casiers rizicoles de l'Office du Niger. Ce manque d'interet de la recherche et du developpement pour le delta peut etre explique par le faible taux de commercialisation du riz traditionnel et la difficulte d'acces aux zones de production. Dans ce cadre, le programme de recherche Gihrex (Gestion integree, hydrologie, ressources et systemes d'exploitation) de l'IRD s'est interesse a la comprehension de la dynamique naturelle du delta, la connaissance de ses modes d'organisation et d'exploitation par l'homme et l'analyse de leur durabilite par la modelisation integree. International audience; Models are increasingly being used to investigate agro-ecosystems dynamics, although processes interacting at different scales remain difficult to consider. When upscaled or downscaled based on aggregation or disaggregation methods, information is generally distorted. This study explores agro-ecosystem modelling using an interaction graph-based modelling approach that explicitly link elements at different scales without up or downscaling. The study area/time frame is the cotton region of West Burkina Faso over the last fifteen years. Field, plot, farm and climate entities are linked in graphs that evolve according to functions computed along different time steps. Three main processes and their interrelations are simulated, occurring at different spatial and temporal scales: crop area expansion, crop rotation and crop production. Three simulation examples are presented to illustrate the analytical possibilities allowed by the approach. These examples test i) the geographical distribution of plots as a means to face climatic risks, ii) the effect of fallowing practice in a spatially constrained cotton dominated landscape and iii) the consequences of reduced access to credit for farmers to buy fertilizers. Model outputs enable quantifying and mapping the respective effects of processes at different scales. Results show that modelling across scales is achievable without resorting to methods of aggregation or disaggregation, which opens new perspectives in multi-scalar analyses of agro-ecosystems that link land production and land use and land cover.

Au Sahel, l'érosion éolienne cause des pertes en terres et en nutriments. Au Niger méridional, cette orme érosion est une cause majeure de la dégradation de l'environnement. Le paysage de ce milieu est dominé par une juxtaposition de surfaces exploitées sous culture pluviale, et de jachères d'âges différents. L'objectif de ce travail est de quantifier les flux d'érosion éolienne et les transferts de nutriments associés en fonction du type d'occupation du sol sur une saison entière. Il apparaît que l'érosion éolienne est faible dans la jachère ancienne (Pi) du fait d'un fort couvert végétal (80%). Cette occupation du sol a respectivement émis près de 7 et 3 fois moins de flux d'érosion que le champ (Pc) et la jachère d'une année (Pj). De même, la somme des bases échangeables sur la jachère ancienne (2,669 Mèq/100g) est supérieure à celles sur le champ (2,085 Mèq/100g) et la jachère jeune (2 Mèq/100g). Ceci est lié, en particulier, au piégeage des particules et des nutriments associés transportés depuis les surfaces très sensibles à l'érosion éolienne (champ et jachère jeune) par le couvert végétal de la jachère ancienne.

Différentes jachères arborées plantées d'Acacia polyacantha, de Senna siamea ou d'Eucalyptus camaldulensis et une jachère naturelle herbacée, ont été installées en comparaison, sur un sol appauvri en matière organique et en nutriments, dans la région de Garoua au Cameroun (1050 mm de pluviosité). L'objectif était d'évaluer leurs effets sur la dynamique du carbone, les cycles des nutriments, les propriétés du sol et le rendement des cultures annuelles après jachère. Par rapport à la jachère herbacée, les jachères arborées de 7 ans ont augmenté considérablement l'accumulation de matière organique et de nutriments dans la biomasse aérienne et souterraine et aussi le prélèvement des nutriments de la profondeur du sol. Ces processus ont permis, lors de l'exploitation des jachères arborées et du brûlis des résidus, d'améliorer les caractéristiques du complexe absorbant (somme des cations échangeables, en particulier Ca) dans l'horizon de surface (0-10 cm) des jachères ligneuses par rapport à la jachère herbacée. Par la fixation de l'azote et son recyclage, l'espèce fixatrice d'azote, A. polyacantha, a augmenté considérablement le bilan d'azote du système. L'espèce a accumulé dans son système racinaire autant d'azote qu 'E. camaldulensis et S. siamea dans leur biomasse totale et leur litière. En outre, seul A. polyacantha a montré une augmentation significative des stocks de carbone et d'azote du sol (couche 0-20 cm) après 6 ans d'âge. Le stock d'azote plus élevé et facilement minéralisable et l'accumulation de matière organique du sol dans la jachère à A. polyacantha, ont été associés à un triplement du rendement du maïs en première année de remise en culture par rapport aux précédents, et un doublement en deuxième année. Cette augmentation très importante des rendements des cultures après jachère n'a pas été observée après les autres précédents arborés. Ces résultats soulignent l'importance des compartiments organiques et le potentiel des arbres fixateurs d'azote dans la restauration de la fertilité des sols dégradés.

Agricultural land devoted to vegetable crops in the Caribbean has strongly increased during the past twenty years, which raises major concerns regarding a reduction in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks because of lowC inputs and high SOC outputs fromthese cropping systems. The aimof this studywas to assess the impact of farming practices on SOC stocks at the farm type level. We designed a framework which encompasses a farm typology describing the diversity of farm practices applied to vegetable crops and a model of SOC dynamics to estimate the impact of these practices on SOC stocks. The study was carried out in the Guadeloupe archipelago, which offers a good representation of the variability of Caribbean agriculture, in a context of transition from traditional sugarcane and banana monocultures for export to a more diversified agriculture including vegetable crops. A farm typology was developed from a survey of 71 farmers concerning their socio-economic characteristics and farming practices. The MorGwanik model of SOC dynamics was then used to assess the impact of farming practices on SOC at the farm type level, and to interpret the observed SOC changes. Five farm types were identified varying from traditional export agriculture with low diversification to monoculture of vegetable crops based on compost application and reduced soil tillage. The observed and simulated results indicated that systems with a fallow/vegetables cycle ratio N 2 and the monoculture of vegetables including compost applications at ≥10 Mg ha−1 yr−1 presented C sequestration corresponding to SOC increases of 10% and 3% of the initial stock, respectively. The monoculture of vegetables with a compost rate b 10 Mg ha−1 yr−1 and systems including vegetables in rotation with export crops and a short fallow cycle presented a reduction in SOC that ranged from10% to 18%. Pedoclimatic conditions had a lower impact on SOC changes. Similar socio-economic profiles of farmers were observed for farm types including very different cropping systems. The model well described SOC changes for each farm type and offered valuable insights about the factors affecting SOC losses and C sequestration. The framework proposed in this study was helpful to identify improved managements that can maintain or increase SOC stocks under tropical conditions.

Dans les sociétés traditionnelles, l’apparition des parcelles marque un seuil de densité qui sépare les peuplements lâches, où, par le biais de la jachère, la reconstitution de la fertilité est confiée à la nature, des peuplements denses, où celle-ci repose en partie sur le travail humain. Dans les agricultures modernes, bien que les clôtures permettent la maîtrise des circulations, les proliférations par la chimie et les transferts aériens de pollens et de l’avifaune perturbent le fonctionnement des agrosystèmes. On y répond par des « mises en forme » nouvelles qui remodèlent les paysages. Remodeling Parcelized Landscapes in Farming Areas. A Tool for Controlling Natural Systems – Natural systems are both partners (insofar as they are controlled) and adversaries (insofar as they are wild) in rural areas where the land has been parcelized. In traditional societies, this parcelization marks a threshold separating a sparse population that lets land lie fallow so that nature improve its fertility from denser habitats where this fertility is partly linked to human labor. In modern farming and despite fences, the proliferation of pollutants from chemical products and their distribution by the air and by birds is negatively affecting how agrosystems operate. The solution is to remodel landscapes.

Traditional yam-based cropping systems (shifting cultivation, slash-and-burn, and short fallow) often result in deforestation and soil nutrient depletion. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of yam-based systems with herbaceous legumes on dry matter (DM) production (tubers, shoots), nutrients removed and recycled, and the soil fertility changes. We compared smallholders’ traditional systems (1-year fallow ofAndropogon gayanus-yam rotation, maize-yam rotation) with yam-based systems integrated herbaceous legumes (Aeschynomene histrix/maize intercropping-yam rotation,Mucuna pruriens/maize intercropping-yam rotation). The experiment was conducted during the 2002 and 2004 cropping seasons with 32 farmers, eight in each site. For each of them, a randomized complete block design with four treatments and four replicates was carried out using a partial nested model with five factors: Year, Replicate, Farmer, Site, and Treatment. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the general linear model (GLM) procedure was applied to the dry matter (DM) production (tubers, shoots), nutrient contribution to the systems, and soil properties at depths 0–10 and 10–20 cm. DM removed and recycled, total N, P, and K recycled or removed, and soil chemical properties (SOM, N, P, K, and pH water) were significantly improved on yam-based systems with legumes in comparison with traditional systems.

As one of the largest users of pesticides in the world, banana production is responsible for numerous types of pollution affecting water, soil and air and causing a variety of health issues. Agroecological innovations can help to reduce pesticide use and achieve cleaner and more sustainable banana production systems. Innovations must be well suited to the diversity of banana farms and acceptable to the stakeholders involved in production. We tested the impact of 18 agroecological innovations in Guadeloupe on the sustainability of three contrasted production systems, using the multi-criteria assessment model MASC. These innovations included different types of fallow (A), bans on pesticides (B), conditional applications of pesticides (C), intercropping (D), resistant cultivars (E), and integrated systems (F). In the assessment, we introduced the views of 29 stakeholders involved in sustainability issues relative to banana grouped through three sets of weightings, obtained by direct weighting of the indicators used in a multi-criteria assessment tool. We analysed the effects of each set of weightings on the sustainability level for these different banana production systems. Our results showed that the adoption of innovations can have negative, positive or no effects on the overall sustainability of banana production systems. Although none of the innovations had a positive effect on all cropping systems, some innovations were relevant to several farm types. However, this depended on the sets of weightings considered, because we found several types of stakeholder with opposing views on the importance of sustainability components. Integrated and organic systems produced the best results in terms of increasing sustainability and were relevant to current farming systems. However, in order to obtain cleaner banana production at the landscape scale, a combination of these innovations, tailored to the diversity of farmers' situations and stakeholder preferences, still needs to be proposed.

Earthworms and termites, as soil engineers, play a major role in the regulation of biogeochemical processes and the provision of ecosystem services. They create biogenic aggregates on the soil surface, e.g., earthworm casts and termite sheetings, which can influence soil erosion and the downward transfer of fertility. We assessed the effect of the micro-relief generated by earthworms and termites on soil hydrodynamic properties, and soil and nutrient losses. Eighteen 1 m × 1 m plots were established for rainfall simulation experiments (2 runs of 40 min rain, intensity 90 mm h −1 ) in a steep slope fallow in Northern Vietnam. The soil surface of the micro-plots differed in the proportions of earthworm casts and termite sheetings. The results confirmed the importance of soil biostructures in the regulation of pedohydrological properties of soils. Although globular water-stable earthworm casts promote water infiltration in soil and decrease soil and nutrient losses, the unstable termite sheetings break-down rapidly and generate structural crusts which foster water runoff and soil detachment. No relation was observed between the abundance or biomass of earthworms or termites and the pedohydrological properties measured during the rainfall simulations. This therefore suggests that soil engineers can have greater impact on ecosystem functioning through their biogenic structures rather than as a result of their own abundance or biomass.

The principal driving force in agricultural research is to increase the yield of food crops. For farming to remain productive, it will be necessary to replenish the nutrients removed or lost from the soil. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of yam-based systems on soil productivity (dry matter production, nutrients recycled or removed, profitability and soil fertility changes). We compared smallholders' traditional systems (1-year fallow of Andropogonon gayanus -yam rotation; maize-yam rotation) with yam-based systems with legumes (intercropped Aeschynomene histrix with maize-yam rotation; intercropped Mucuna pruriens with maize-yam rotation). The production of dry matter (tubers, shoots), nutrients removed or recycled, and soil properties were significantly improved on yam-based systems with legumes in comparison with traditional systems. Year × Treatment interactions influenced significantly the tuber dry matter production. Site × Treatment and Treatment × Farmer interactions affected significantly nutrients removed or recycled. The amount of nutrients recycled or removed was dependent on the dry matter production that, in turn, depended on soil fertility, rainfall and farmers' effect.Yam-based systems with legumes brought a higher present value than traditional systems in the first 4 years and appeared attractive for land, labour and cash productivities.

1 The banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is the most serious pest of banana and plantain in most production areas, including the West Indies. 2 During a period of 2 years, we assessed the efficacy of a pheromone masstrapping control strategy of C. sordidus in field conditions in Guadeloupe at different cropping stages, both in sanitation fallows and in different ratoon banana crops. 3 In the fallows, catches peaked 3 months after beginning trapping and then decreased to zero after 9 months. By contrast, for the new plantations, the catches of C. sordidus increased after the 11th month and, in the older banana fields, there was no decrease in C. sordidus catches. The C. sordidus catches increased in the neighbouring banana plots, whereas they decreased in the fallows, and these catches decreased with the distance from fallow. 4 In conclusion, mass trapping with synergized pheromone traps within fallows should allow better sanitation of banana plantations. Yet, within the farms, fallows must not be located next to new plantations to avoid massive damage to the young plants. More generally, the present study emphasizes that the control of this insect should be managed at the farm scale and not at the field scale, with special attention being paid to the location of fallows.
