3. Spatial Discovery and the Research Library

Abstract

Academic libraries have always supported research across disciplines by integrating access to diverse contents and resources. They now have the opportunity to reinvent their role in facilitating interdisciplinary work by offering researchers new ways of sharing, curating, discovering, and linking research data. Spatial data and metadata support this process because location often integrates disciplinary perspectives, enabling researchers to make their own research data more discoverable, to discover data of other researchers, and to integrate data from multiple sources. The Center for Spatial Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and the UCSB Library are undertaking joint research to better enable the discovery of research data and publications. The research addresses the question of how to spatially enable data discovery in a setting that allows for mapping and analysis in a GIS while connecting the data to publications about them. It suggests a framework for an integrated data discovery mechanism and shows how publications may be linked to associated data sets exposed either directly or through metadata on Esri’s Open Data platform. The results demonstrate a simple form of linking data to publications through spatially referenced metadata and persistent identifiers. This linking adds value to research products and increases their discoverability across disciplinary boundaries.

The article reports on changing the Information Bulletin (IB) format to digital in 2013. It suggests various approaches including hosting the newsletter and base line on the website as an online publication, using WordPress as a full-blown content management system, and engaging the Open Journals Systems (OJS) interface for managing, publishing and archiving professional journals. The article also notes that a new International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) will be required.

15. The effect of controlled traffic on cotton yield and soil condition on three West Tennessee soils

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of a controlled traffic pattern on the physical condition of soil and the cotton yield. Three types of seedbed preparation were used; con-ventional, bedded, and none. Three types of equipment—two-row, fourrow, and six-row—were used; the traffic from this equipment was controlled such that the traffic remained on permanent wheel paths through the field. The controlled traffic pattern caused no severe adverse soil physical conditions. Also, yields from the bedded plots tended to exceed those from the conventional plots suggesting the possibility of reducing the number of pre-planting trips through the field.

17. Surveys of scientists and engineers: Ensuring reliable research evidence for good practice

Abstract

Information scientists around the globe have made tremendous progress in understanding how scientists and engineers find and use information by through the use of a wide variety of survey instruments. Librarians and publishers increasingly turn to the data generated by these instruments in an effort to design and implement information products and services that the scientific community needs and desires. Three researchers experienced in studying the information seeking behavior of academics will describe their current investigations distinguishing between the survey mechanisms found to be effective or ineffective. Discussion will be led and provoked by the moderator and reactor who both have experience providing library services to this community. The last third of the session will be an open discussion soliciting comments and questions about trends, survey design, and survey experiences.
