Abstract

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) encodes information on the origin and evolution of the universe, buried in a fractional anisotropy of one part in 100,000 on angular scales from arcminutes to tens of degrees. We await the coming onslaught of data from experiments measuring the microwave sky from the ground, from balloons and from space. However, we are faced with the harsh reality that current algorithms for extracting cosmological information cannot handle data sets of the size and complexity expected even in the next few years. Here we review the challenges involved in understanding this data: making maps from time-ordered data, removing the foreground contaminants, and finally estimating the power spectrum and cosmological parameters from the CMB map. If handled naively, the global nature of the analysis problem renders these tasks effectively impossible given the volume of the data. We discuss possible techniques for overcoming these issues and outline the many other challenges that wait to be addressed., Invited article for Computing in Science and Engineering, Mar/April issue. Abstract

Adding a 17 keV neutrino with a lifetime of ∼ 1 yr can explain the puzzling large-scale structure observed in the galaxy distribution which is difficult to understand in the “standard” cold dark matter model with the adiabatic scale invariant density fluctuations predicted by inflation. Decay times ≳ 10 yr are incompatible with microwave background anisotropy limits and galaxy clustering observations.

Abstract

Context. About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. Aims. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. Methods. Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. Results. For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

Abstract

We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130 degrees <= l <= 230 degrees and -50 degrees <= b <= -10 degrees). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (nu < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature T-e from Ha and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained T-e ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% (f(d) = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5 +/- 1.5 GHz. We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. By combining physical models for vibrational and rotational dust emission and adding the constraints from the thermal dust spectrum from Planck and IRAS, we are able to present a good description of the AME frequency spectrum for plausible values of the local density and radiation field.

Abstract

We make use of the Planck all-sky survey to derive number counts and spectral indices of extragalactic sources - infrared and radio sources - from the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) at 100 to 857 GHz (3mm to 350 mu m). Three zones (deep, medium and shallow) of approximately homogeneous coverage are used to permit a clean and controlled correction for incompleteness, which was explicitly not done for the ERCSC, as it was aimed at providing lists of sources to be followed up. Our sample, prior to the 80% completeness cut, contains between 217 sources at 100 GHz and 1058 sources at 857 GHz over about 12 800 to 16 550 deg(2) (31 to 40% of the sky). After the 80% completeness cut, between 122 and 452 and sources remain, with flux densities above 0.3 and 1.9 Jy at 100 and 857 GHz. The sample so defined can be used for statistical analysis. Using the multi-frequency coverage of the Planck High Frequency Instrument, all the sources have been classified as either dust-dominated (infrared galaxies) or synchrotron-dominated (radio galaxies) on the basis of their spectral energy distributions (SED). Our sample is thus complete, flux-limited and color-selected to differentiate between the two populations. We find an approximately equal number of synchrotron and dusty sources between 217 and 353 GHz; at 353 GHz or higher (or 217 GHz and lower) frequencies, the number is dominated by dusty (synchrotron) sources, as expected. For most of the sources, the spectral indices are also derived. We provide for the first time counts of bright sources from 353 to 857 GHz and the contributions from dusty and synchrotron sources at all HFI frequencies in the key spectral range where these spectra are crossing. The observed counts are in the Euclidean regime. The number counts are compared to previously published data (from earlier Planck results, Herschel, BLAST, SCUBA, LABOCA, SPT, and ACT) and models taking into account both radio or infrared galaxies, and covering a

Abstract

We describe the processing of the 336 billion raw data samples from the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) which we performed to produce six temperature maps from the first 295 days of Planck-HFI survey data. These maps provide an accurate rendition of the sky emission at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545 and 857GHz with an angular resolution ranging from 9.9 to 4.4'. The white noise level is around 1.5 mu K degree or less in the 3 main CMB channels (100-217 GHz). The photometric accuracy is better than 2% at frequencies between 100 and 353 GHz and around 7% at the two highest frequencies. The maps created by the HFI Data Processing Centre reach our goals in terms of sensitivity, resolution, and photometric accuracy. They are already sufficiently accurate and well-characterised to allow scientific analyses which are presented in an accompanying series of early papers. At this stage, HFI data appears to be of high quality and we expect that with further refinements of the data processing we should be able to achieve, or exceed, the science goals of the Planck project.

Abstract

The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is designed to measure the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background and Galactic foregrounds in six ~30% bands centered at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545, and 857 GHz at an angular resolution of 10′ (100 GHz), 7′ (143 GHz), and 5′ (217 GHz and higher). HFI has been operating flawlessly since launch on 14 May 2009, with the bolometers reaching 100 mK the first week of July. The settings of the readout electronics, including bolometer bias currents, that optimize HFI's noise performance on orbit are nearly the same as the ones chosen during ground testing. Observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have confirmed that the optical beams and the time responses of the detection chains are in good agreement with the predictions of physical optics modeling and pre-launch measurements. The Detectors suffer from a high flux of cosmic rays due to historically low levels of solar activity. As a result of the redundancy of Planck's observation strategy, theremoval of a few percent of data contaminated by glitches does not significantly affect the instrumental sensitivity. The cosmic ray flux represents a significant and variable heat load on the sub-Kelvin stage. Temporal variation and the inhomogeneous distribution of the flux results in thermal fluctuations that are a probable source of low frequency noise. The removal of systematic effects in the time ordered data provides a signal with an average noise equivalent power that is 70% of the goal in the 0.6-2.5 Hz range. This is slightly higher than was achieved during the pre-launch characterization but better than predicted in the early phases of the project. The improvement over the goal is a result of the low level of instrumental background loading achieved by the optical and thermal design of the HFI.

Abstract

We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130◦ ≤ l ≤ 230◦ and −50◦ ≤ b ≤ −10◦). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (ν < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature Te from Hα and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained Te ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% ( fd = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5±1.5 GHz.We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. Abstract

We show how nonlinear effects of the metric and scalar fields may be included in stochastic inflation. Our formalism can be applied to non-Gaussian fluctuation models for galaxy formation. Fluctuations with wavelengths larger than the horizon length are governed by a network of Langevin equations for the physical fields. Stochastic noise terms arise from quantum fluctuations that are assumed to become classical at horizon crossing and that then contribute to the background. Using Hamilton-Jacobi methods, we solve the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner constraint equations which allows us to separate the growing modes from the decaying ones in the drift phase following each stochastic impulse. We argue that the most reasonable choice of time hypersurfaces for the Langevin system during inflation is {ital T}=ln({ital Ha}), where {ital H} and {ital a} are the local values of the Hubble parameter and the scale factor, since {ital T} is the natural time for evolving the short-wavelength scalar field fluctuations in an inhomogeneous background.

Abstract

Stochastic inflation can be viewed as a sequence of two-step processes. In the first step a stochastic impulse from short-distance quantum fluctuations acts on long waves---the interaction. In the second step the long waves evolve semiclassically---the propagation. Both steps must be developed to address whether fluctuations for cosmic structure formation may be non-Gaussian. We describe a formalism for following the nonlinear propagation of long-wavelength metric and scalar-field fluctuations. We perform an expansion in spatial gradients of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner equations and we retain only terms up to first order. At each point the fields obey evolution equations like those in a homogeneous universe, but now described by a local scale factor ${e}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ and Hubble expansion rate $H$. However, the different points are joined together through the momentum constraint equation. The gradient expansion is appropriate for inflation if the long-wave fields are smoothed over scales below ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}{H}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Our equations are naturally described in the Einstein-Hamilton-Jacobi framework, which governs an ensemble of inhomogeneous universes, and which may be interpreted as a semiclassical approximation to the quantum theory. We find that the Hubble parameter, which is a function of the local values of the scalar field, obeys a separated Hamilton-Jacobi equation that also governs the semiclassical phase of the wave functional. In our approximation, time hypersurface changes leave the equations invariant. However, the stochastic impulses that change the field initial conditions are most simply given on uniform expansion factor hypersurfaces whereas propagation is most easily solved on uniform Hubble hypersurfaces, in terms of $\ensuremath{\alpha}({x}^{j},H)$, the nonlinear analog of $\ensuremath{\zeta}$ of linear perturbation theory; we therefore pay special attention to hypersurface shifting. In particular, we describe the transformation process for the fluctuation probability functional. Exact general solutions are found for the case of a single scalar field interacting through an exponential potential. For example, we show that quantum corrections to long-wavelength evolution of the metric are characteristically small using exact Green's-function solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for this potential. Approximate analytic solutions to our classical system for slowly evolving multiple scalar fields are also easy to obtain in this formalism, contrasting with previous numerical approaches.

A technique widely used in dermatological research deposits drugs onto the skin from volatile solvents and often uses hairless mouse skin as a model for human tissue. We therefore compared the damaging effect of acetone on hairless mouse and human abdominal skins using an in vitro steady-state technique. The permeabilities of the two skin types to 5-fluorouracil were measured, both untreated and after acetone application. For untreated skins, the permeability coefficients of 5-fluorouracil were similar in the two skin types, suggesting a limited usefulness of the hairless mouse as a model for human skin. After acetone treatment, however, hairless mouse skin increased 16-fold in permeability (P = 0.975), whereas human abdominal skin was not significantly affected (P

Abstract

Scale-invariant (flat) fluctuation spectra are the most natural outcomes of inflation. Nonetheless current large-scale-structure observations seem to indicate more fluctuation power on large scales than flat spectra give. We consider a wide variety of models based on the chaotic inflation paradigm and sketch the effects that varying the expansion rate, structure of the potential surface, and the curvature coupling constants have on the quantum fluctuation spectra. We calculate in detail the quantum generation of fluctuation spectra by numerically solving the linearized perturbation equations for multiple scalar fields, the metric, and the radiation into which the scalars dissipate, following the evolution from inside the horizon through reheating.

We examine the possible cosmological consequences of Population III stars. Their dark remnants could provide the ''missing mass.'' Their light could have produced either the entire 3 K background or observable distortions in its spectrum. Their heat or explosions could have reionized the universe and perhaps produced galaxies. Their helium yield could suffice to provide an alternative explanation for the observed ''primordial'' abundance, and their heavy-element yield could have produced a burst of pregalactic enrichment. We discuss which sort of stars could best fulfill these roles and conclude that the most plausible candidates would be ''Very Massive Objects'' in the mass range 10/sup 2/--10/sup 5/ M/sub sun/. Even if Population III stars played none of these roles, consideration of the associated effects places strong constraints on their mass spectrum and formation epoch.

If the baryon asymmetry in the universe is produced at a temperature approx.10/sup 15/ GeV as a result of baryon nonconservation, as predicted in grand unified theories, then perturbations in the baryon density fluctuations. Isothermal (entropy) perturbations can be created as a result of spatial variations in the local expansion rate which can result from spatial inhomogeneities in the cosmological constant, scalar curvature, or shear (and vorticity). We discuss the role of each in turn. We calculate numerically the entropy per baryon created in Bianchi I universe with shear, using model systems based upon the SU(5) grand unified theory. We calculate an effective viscosity in this theory, and use it to show that viscous damping of shear is not sufficiently large to smooth the universe. The shear dissipation after baryon synthesis generates sufficient entropy that we can constrain the magnitude of the decaying mode of shear to values which are negligible by the neutrino decoupling and primordial nucleosynthesis eras. The survival of shear inhomogeneities results in isothermal perturbations being generated. these could be of the magnitude required for the gravitational instability theory of galaxy formation if decaying modes are preferentially selected over growing modes, and galaxy scale shear inhomogeneities existmore » at very early times.« less
