Abstract

The development of a Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) readout as an option for the TPC of the near detector of the T2K neutrino experiment is presented. The low track density and the wide range in polar angle of particles produced by neutrino interactions drive the initial choice of relatively large squared pads (8 mm) for the performance study. The physics requirements [T2K ND280 Conceptual Design Report, http://dpnc.unige.ch:8080/nu/Members/nabgrall/t2kge/t2kge_doc/cdr.pdf ] are a momentum resolution better than 10 % at 1 GeV/c and a 3 σ dE/dx separation between muons and electrons. Micro-pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs) such as GEMs or Micromegas show several beneficial features compared to the traditional Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers. They have been tested in the HARP TPC environment at CERN. Preliminary results form the GEM tests are reported here.

Abstract

A fast level-1 trigger processor for the Active Lead Ring calorimeter (ALR) and for the Very Small Angle Tagger (VSAT) of the L3 detector has been constructed and implemented. The main application is the study of single tagged two-photon collision processes at LEP II. Particular care has been taken to preserve the timing characteristics of the signal in order to allow bunch tagging in the multi-bunch mode of LEP.

Abstract

The L3 central tracking detector has been in operation since the start-up of LEP (Large Electron Positron collider) in 1989. This detector consists of a Time Expansion Chamber (TEC), a layer of Plastic Scintillating Fibers and a Z-chamber. The TEC gives a high spatial resolution and an excellent multi-track reconstruction capability. The fibers are designed to calibrate the drift velocity with high precision. The Z-Chamber provides TEC with accurate information about the z-coordinates of the tracks. A description of the design and the infrastructure of these three detectors, including the readout and data acquisition system, is given. The performance of the detectors during the 1990 and 1991 LEP running periods is presented.

Abstract

A Fastbus ADC and TDC module has been developed for the trigger of the L3 experiment. It provides fast and precise integration of successive pairs of charges derived from the charge division wires of the central tracking chamber, as well as a measurement of their drift times. The minimum separation time between digitizations is 170 ns. The charges are measured with a precision of 1 pC up to charges of 600 pC. The drift times are measured in 50 ns time bins. A system including 60 modules provides data allowing the reconstruction of charged particle tracks in three dimensions. This information is used in background rejection algorithms of the second and third level triggers.

Abstract

A first-level charged particle trigger based on parallel processing and look-up tables has been developed for the L3 detector. It processes analog signals generated by the central tracking detector, a drift chamber with axial wires. The trigger decision is made on the total number of tracks, the number of coplanar pairs of tracks, or on more complicated topologies found in the projection normal to the beam axis. The system is very flexible and can be adjusted to a wide range of background conditions and tracking chamber efficiencies.

Abstract

TPG is the acronym for a 3D imaging gas chamber with GEM amplification, hexaboard read-out and FADC electronics. We have constructed a TPG-head with three GEM foils (30 cm diameter) and a read-out board (30 cm diameter active surface) covered with 710000 hexagonal pads of 300 /spl mu/m size. The aligned pads are connected in parallel to one strip out of three sets of 576 parallel strips (500 /spl mu/m pitch). The three sets of strips run at 120 degrees from each other and at three different depths inside the hexaboard multi-layer structure. Each strip is read by FADC electronics. The TPG-head is under initial test in a small container with a drift volume 33 mm long and of 30 cm diameter. A 150 cm long drift volume inside a 0.7 Tesla solenoidal magnetic field has been prepared by using HARP-TPC instrumentation as a test bed.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 (June 1998) in a 51.7 deg orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A search for antihelium nuclei in the rigidity range 1–140 GV was performed. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1×10^−6 was obtained. The high energy proton, electron, positron, helium, antiproton and deuterium spectra were accurately measured. For each particle and nuclei two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum. Positrons in the second spectrum were found to be much more abundant than electrons. Tracing particles from the second spectra shows that most of them travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field, and that the positive particles (p and e+) and negative ones (e−) originate from two complementary geographic regions. The second helium spectrum flux over the energy range 0.1–1.2 GeV/nucleon was measured to be (6.3 ± 0.9) × 10^−3(m^2 s sr)^−1. Over 90 percent of the helium flux was determined to be 3He at the 90% confidence level

Abstract

The primary proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.2 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at an altitude of 380 km. The complete data set combining three shuttle attitudes and including all known systematic effects is presented.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7 degree orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A total of 2.86 * 10^6 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1 * 10^-6 is obtained., 18 pages, Latex, 9 .eps figures

Abstract

The lepton spectra in the kinetic energy ranges 0.2 to 40 GeV for e − and 0.2 to 3 GeV for e + were measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at altitudes near 380 km. From the origin of the leptons two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum with positrons much more abundant than electrons. Tracing leptons from the second spectra shows that most of these leptons travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that the e + and e − originate from two complementary geographic regions.

Abstract

The helium spectrum from 0.1 to 100 GeV/nucleon was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at altitudes near 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a second helium spectrum was observed. In the second helium spectra over the energy range 0.1 to 1.2 GeV/nucleon the flux was measured to be (6.3±0.9)×10 −3 ( m 2 sec sr ) −1 and more than ninety percent of the helium was determined to be 3He (at the 90% CL). Tracing helium from the second spectrum shows that about half of the 3He travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that they originate from restricted geographic regions similar to protons and positrons.

Abstract

The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ~ 70 m^-2 sec^-1 sr^-1. Abstract

We present the status of the development of the readout electronics for the large area silicon tracker of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, carried out by the CERN RD2 project. Our basic readout concept is to integrate a fast amplifier, analog memory, sparse data scan circuit and analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) on a single VLSI chip. This architecture will provide full analog information of charged particle hits associated unambiguously to one LHC beam crossing, which is expected to be at a frequency of 40 MHz. The expected low occupancy of the ATLAS inner silicon detectors allows us to use a low speed (5 MHz) on-chip ADC with a multiplexing scheme. The functionality of the fast amplifier and analog memory have been demonstrated with various prototype chips. Most recently we have successfully tested improved versions of the amplifier and the analog memory. A piecewise linear ADC has been fabricated and performed satisfactorily up to 5 MHz. A new chip including amplifier, analog memory, memory controller, ADC, and data buffer has been designed and submitted for fabrication and will be tested on a prototype of the ATLAS silicon tracker module with realistic electrical and mechanical constraints.

Abstract

The status of the Silicon Microvertex Detector (SMD) and its installation into the LEP-L3 experiment are presented, highlighting novel features and sophisticated techniques. Preliminary results based on 1993 data are given and compared with Monte Carlo predictions, to understand the detector performances and its tracking capabilities.

Abstract

The design and construction of the silicon strip microvertex detector (SMD) of the L3 experiment at LEP are described. We present the sensors, readout electronics, data acquisition system, mechanical assembly and support, displacement monitoring systems and radiation monitoring system of the recently installed double-sided, double-layered SMD. This detector utilizes novel and sophisticated techniques for its readout.

Abstract

A trigger system has been designed and built to select events containing high p T electromagnetic showers detected in a large calorimeter with orthogonal readout. The electronics include analog adders with up to 123 inputs, pulse shapers with 20 ns integration time, 100 MHz flash ADCs and ECL loop-up tables. The total number of input channels is 3072 and the trigger decision is made in about 120 ns.

Abstract

A report on the status of the construction of the L3 Silicon Microvertex Detector is presented here. The detector will consist of two double sided AC coupled silicon layers equipped with rφ and z readout with an expected intrinsic resolution of ≈ 6 μ m and ≈ 25 μ m respectively. A description of the detector with its mechanical support, alignment system and readout electronics is presented.
