Satellite-based precipitation data are a viable source of information in data-sparse regions and are particularly valuable for hydrological modelling applications. Several studies of satellite-based precipitation focus on monthly or greater timescales, but a relatively fewer number have been done on the daily or sub-daily scales. Also, biases in satellite-based precipitation data are often region-specific and such information is important for quantifying input errors in hydrological models. Our study builds upon these needs by examining biases in daily precipitation data for a watershed in the southeastern United States. We observed biases that occur seasonally and by magnitude. Seasonally, precipitation correlates well in most seasons but summer, likely due to the sporadic nature of convective precipitation that is a common precipitation mechanism in this region during the summer. Validation of North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP) climate simulations is conducted for selected US Forest Service sites in the southeastern United States. Results focus on qualitative and quantitative comparisons of seasonal and monthly temperature data from NARCCAP simulations to the surface air temperature data sets developed at the University of Delaware. The Regional Climate Model, RCM3, driven by the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Global Climate Model underestimates average surface temperature for some areas of the southeast United States by about 4 °C for the daily average during the winter of the selected period. Scholars from antiquity until today have observed and speculated on how human activity shapes the Earth system (Ruddiman 2003; Von Storch and Stehr 2006; Yow 2007). Noted scholar Paul Crutzen has stated,humans have become a geologic agent comparable to erosion and eruptions . . . it seems appropriate to emphasize the central role of mankind in geology and ecology by proposing to use the term “anthropocene” for the current geological epoch.

Water is essential to life in the Earth system. The water cycle components that sustain life are becoming more scarce and polluted. The most recent (1999-2004) drought experienced in the southwestern United States is the seventh worst in the approximately 500-year proxy tree-ring record. As a result, many regions contemplated drought emergencies in which severe water restrictions are implemented. Though larger weather and climate processes likely control drought processes, there is increasing evidence that anthropogenic or human-related activities can significantly alter precipitation processes. Urbanization is an example of anthropogenic forcing. Recent studies continue to provide evidence that urban environments can modify or induce precipitation under a specific set of conditions. Arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and other parts of the world are rapidly developing and placing greater demands on the environmental system. In the past fifty years, Phoenix has expanded from a predominantly agricultural center to an urbanized region with extent 700 percent larger than its size in the middle of the twentieth century. Riyadh's population grew from about a half million people in 1972 to almost two million by 2000. Saudi Arabia experienced urbanization later than many other countries; in the early 1970s its urban-rural ratio was still about 1:3. By 1990 the ratio had reversed to about 3:l. In the mid-1970s Riyadh's population was increasing by about 10 percent a year. Irrigation also significantly increased between 1972 and 1990 southeast of Riyadh. The study employs a 108-year precipitation historical data record, global climate observing network observations and satellite data to identify possible anomalies in rainfall in and around two major arid urban areas, Phoenix, Arizona and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It provides statistically sound evidence that rainfall distribution and magnitude is statistically different in post-urban than in pre-urban (1900-1950) Phoenix. The study hypothesis that a complex interaction between the city landscape, irrigated lands, and nearby mountains have created preferred regions for rainfall development. The study also provides early evidence that rapidly urbanizing parts of the arid Middle East may also be experiencing different precipitation regimes in response to urbanization and irrigation.

On agar spread plates, N-octylethanolamine was biocidal at comparable minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values (3–4mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (two strains), Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Candida tropicalis, and Acremonium sp. which had been grown on a number of different media. The inhibition was greater at higher pH values. In liquid culture, growth inhibition by 3mm N-octylethanolamine was accompanied by cell lysis. Both effects could be prevented by the presence of 1mm spermine or spermidine, but only in bacteria, and not at high pH values. These effects of the polyamines were shown to be non-specific, being shared by other polycations and Mg2+ ions. N-Octylethanolamine at concentrations above its MIC caused total inhibition of the oxidation of 1mm glucose by Ps. aeruginosa (CAS1 and PAO1), E. coli, or C. tropic an effect that was partially reversible by Mg2+ ions. At concentrations below the MIC, there was little inhibit ion of glucose oxidation but a potent inhibition of the extrusion of ethidium bromide from intact cells of E. coli, suggesting that at such concentrations N-octylethanolamine is uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. The data presented confirm the view that the biocidal effects are due to action on the cytoplasmic membrane.

This is the first study to report kinetic data on the survival of a range of significant milk-borne pathogens under commercial-type pasteurization conditions. The most heat-resistant strain of each of the milk-borne pathogens Staphylococcus aureus , Yersinia enterocolitica , pathogenic Escherichia coli , Cronobacter sakazakii (formerly known as Enterobacter sakazakii ), Listeria monocytogenes , and Salmonella was selected to obtain the worst-case scenario in heat inactivation trials using a pilot-plant-scale pasteurizer. Initially, approximately 30 of each species were screened using a submerged coil unit. Then, UHT milk was inoculated with the most heat-resistant pathogens at ∼10 7 /mL and heat treated in a pilot-plant-scale pasteurizer under commercial-type conditions of turbulent flow for 15s over a temperature range from 56 to 66°C and at 72°C. Survivors were enumerated on nonselective media chosen for the highest efficiency of plating of heat-damaged bacteria of each of the chosen strains. The mean log 10 reductions and temperatures of inactivation of the 6 pathogens during a 15-s treatment were Staph. aureus >6.7 at 66.5°C, Y. enterocolitica >6.8 at 62.5°C, pathogenic E. coli >6.8 at 65°C, C. sakazakii >6.7 at 67.5°C, L. monocytogenes >6.9 at 65.5°C, and Salmonella ser. Typhimurium >6.9 at 61.5°C. The kinetic data from these experiments will be used by the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to populate the quantitative risk assessment model being developed to investigate the risks to New Zealand consumers from pasteurized, compared with nonpasteurized, milk and milk products.

The early follow-up of patients treated by simple mastectomy alone or simple mastectomy combined with radical radiotherapy is presented. Both groups were well matched for age, menopausal status, duration of symptoms, size of tumour, and lymph-node involvement. There was no significant difference in survival of patients in the two groups at three years, but local recurrence was significantly more frequent (28%) in the mastectomy-alone patients. Early survival was not adversely affected by radiotherapy.
