A total of about View the MathML source decays have been analyzed to measure the View the MathML source mixing probability. Two different b tagging techniques have been used: events with two leptons and events with one lepton and one Λ. From a combination of the two methods the average mixing parameter, χ, was determined to be (12.1±1.6(stat.)±0.4(syst.)±0.4(model)%.

The total and the differential cross sections for the reaction e+e− → γγ(γ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP using an integrated luminosity of 36.9 pb−1. The results agree with the QED predictions and consequently there is no evidence for non-standard channels with the same experimental signature. The lower limits obtained on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ+ > 143 GeV and Λ− > 120 GeV, and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λγ = 1 is 132 GeV/c2. Upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays Z0 → γγ, Z0 → π0γ, Z0 → ηγ and Z0 → γγγ have been determined to be 5.5 × 10−5, 5.5 × 10−5, 8.0 × 10−5, and 1.7 × 10−5 respectively. All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.

An analysis of the production of the Λ baryon in the hadronic decays of the Z0 is presented, based on about 993K multihadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP during 1991 and 1992. The differencial cross section of the Λ and the correlations between Λ and View the MathML source produced in the same event are compared to current models, based both on string fragmentation and on cluster decay. The predictions of the string fragmentation model are found to give satisfactory agreements with the data, clearly better than those of the cluster model.

We have studied the performance of several Microstrip Gas Chamber (MSGC) prototypes made on standard Desag D263 boron implanted glass. The purpose of the implantation is to reduce the surface resistance. The long term stability of this implantation has been measured under applied bias voltage. Comparative tests have been carried out on prototypes made on implanted and unimplanted detectors under electron ( 90 Sr) and X-ray (8 keV) irradiation. The total dose was approximately 7 mC/cm.

Damages to MSGCs induced by discharges have been investigated. Optimization of electrode shapes and/or deposition of a protective coating allows the increase of the potential difference between anode and cathode, thus increasing the gain. For prototypes of MSGCs made at the Centre de Recherches Nucleaires, each step of the manufacturing processes was carefully controlled. Results are presented on the influence of cleaning processes on the surface resistance of glass substrates.

K0SK0S correlations have been studied in a sample of 717 511 hadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP during 1992. An enhancement is found in the production of pairs of K0S of similar momenta, as compared with a Monte Carlo simulated reference sample. The measured values for the strength of the correlation and the radius of the emitting source of kaons are λ = 1.13 ± 0.54 (stat) ± 0.23 (syst) and r = 0.90 ± 0.19 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst) fm. This enhancement is consistent with the hypothesis that K0SK0S pairs display an enhancement, regardless of whether they come from a K0K0 or from a K0K0 (K0K0) system.

The time dependent mixing of View the MathML source mesons has been observed by using the correlations between the charge of D∗ mesons and the weighted mean charge of particles in each hemisphere. From a reconstructed D∗± sample corresponding to about 1.7 million hadronic Z0 decays, the mass difference between the two Bd0 mass eigenstates has been measured to be View the MathML source or, converting into eV/c2: Δm = [3.29 ± 0.79 (stat) ± 0.39 (syst.)] 10−4 eV/c2.

Seven unambiguous events out of a sample of 270 000 Z0 decays, contain in tile same jet a D(s) meson and a muon at large transverse momentum relative to the et axis. These events are direct evidence for B(s)0 meson production in hadronic Z0 decays. The production rate of these events, relative to all hadronic Z0 decays is ( 18 +/- 8) x 10(-5) this number including the relevant branching fractions of the B(s)0 and D(s). The value of the B(s)0 meson lifetime relative to the average B meson lifetime is measured to be 0.8 +/- 0.4.

The effective rate of the NO/char reaction measured over the temperature range 1250 to 1750 K has been found to be given by (d NO/dt)=4.18×104 exp (−34.70 K cal/RT) AEPNO moles/sec where AE is the external surface area of the char in m2/gm, and PNO is in atmospheres. The rate of the reaction is found to be retarded by water vapor and enhanced by CO by amounts that decrease with increasing temperature. This is consistent with a hypothesis that the NO/C reaction is retarded by the formation of a chemisorbed layer which can be removed by reaction with CO. Support for this hypothesis is provided by transient experiments which show that, at low temperatures, NO reacts with carbon to form N2 and a chemisorbed oxygen layer, and that the chemisorbed oxygen decomposes at higher temperatures to form CO or reacts with CO to form CO2.

A method is presented for using a measured hydrogen atom profile as a probe of reaction details, and for refining the reaction mechanism by imposing the constraint that the hydrogen atom profile be correctly calculated. A reaction mechanism is derived for the fuel-rich, atmospheric pressure combustion of an acetylene/methane mixture at 2000K in the postflame zone of a rich (φ = 1.66) ethylene/air flame. The resulting chain-branched mechanism has the characteristic of, on net, forming free radicals in the hydrocarbon oxidative reaction sequence. The implications of this result are discussed in the context of radical scavenging by hydrocarbons and the system approach to equilibrium.

Computational results are presented supporting the suggestion that the primary process in fuel-rich acetylene combustion is reaction with OH to yield ketene, and that acetylene does not decay, primarily, through the methane family. The methodology for modeling higher hydrocarbon decay is discussed.

Decay profiles of methane, acetylene, and hydrogen atoms are modeled in the post flame zone of four fuel-rich, atmospheric presure ethylene/air flat flames, at fuel equivalence ratios of 1.71 to 1.83 and adiabatic flame temperatures of 1992 to 2126 K. Chain branching is required in the fuel-rich hydrocarbon combustion mechanism for the simulation of hydrogen atom measurements. The mechanism of hydrocarbon suppression of free radical overshoot is discussed.

A method has been developed for the direct determination of oxygenated compounds in complex mixtures by capillary gas chromatography on a fused-silica column, coated with a polar stationary phase. Compounds identified and determined without derivatization include carboxylic acids, primary alcohols, n-aldehydes, methyl esters and ketones. The chromatographic system consists of a fused-silica capillary column, 50 meters in length, with a coating of AT-1000 (FFAP). The selectivity of this phase enables the separation of the oxygenated compounds from the hydrocarbons in these complex mixtures and distributes them by molecular weight into characteristic peak envelopes for each class of oxygenate. The free carboxylic acids peaks elute with minimal tailing and adsorption.

An N 2 O laser is used to pump the ground vibrational state (8,7) inversion doublet of 14 NH 3 while simultaneously monitoring other ground state doublets. Time-resolved rotational energy transfer signals are observed in accordance with known selection values. Absolute rates of rotational energy transfer processes are estimated.

The phenomenological Bloch equations are solved for transient nutation in optical two-level systems, using the Feynman—Vernon—Hellwarth representation. The resulting solutions display an exponentially damped oscillatory behavior, from which the relaxation times T1 and T2 may be derived. Transient nutation signals were observed using time-resolved microwave spectroscopy with rapid switching of applied Stark fields. Observed collision relaxation rates are (5.25 ± 0.50) MHz/torr for OCS—OCS, (1.96 ± 0.30) MHz/torr for OCS—He and (1.67 ± 0.20) MHz/torr for OCS—Ar. For NH3NH3 relaxation the rate is (23.2 ± 3.5) MHz/torr for the (8,7) inversion line.
