Increasing global demands for oils are fueling the production of diluted bitumen (DB) from Canada’s oil sands region. More weathered than conventional crude (CC) oils, Alberta bitumen is often diluted with lighter petroleum oils to reduce density and viscosity to meet pipeline specifications for transportation. Being a heavy oil product that is transported in large volumes across Canada and the USA, there has been interest to compare its behavior and toxicity characteristics when spilled to those of CC. To determine the influence of environmental weathering upon DB following a freshwater spill, we conducted separate controlled spills of Cold Lake Blend DB and Mixed Sweet Blend light CC oil in a mesocosm spill-tank system at 24 °C with wave-action for 56 days. DB-contaminated waters remained acutely lethal for a period of 14 days to early life stage fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed during embryologic development, while CC was lethal for 1 day. However, concentrations of mono- and polycyclic aromatic compounds, often claimed to be principally responsible for the acute and chronic toxicity of crude oils, were consistently higher in CC water compared to DB. Elevated aromatic concentrations in CC water correlated with higher prevalences of developmental malformations, reduced heart and growth rates, and impacts on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway. Organic acids were measured over the course of the studies and O2 containing naphthenic acids were present at greater relative abundances in DB- compared to CC-contaminated water, with their attenuation correlating with reduced acute and sublethal toxicity. Furthermore, organic acid degradation products accumulated with time and likely contributed to the consistently sublethal toxicity of the weathered oils throughout the experiment. Improved characterization of the fractions including organic acids and those organic compounds found within the unresolved complex mixture of fresh and weathered crude oils is necessary to adequately understand and prepare for the risks that accidental petroleum spills pose to aquatic resources.

Obtaining reliable and objective data on certain working conditions is necessary to analyse the causes and variables that can influence the development of hearing loss amongst the working population. Objective occupational data have been collected from a heterogeneous sample of 1418 workers in Spain, see “How activity type, time on the job and noise level on the job affect the hearing of the working population. Using Bayesian networks to predict the development of hipoacusia” (Barrero et al., 2018) [1]. Among the main factors analysed are the noise levels to which these workers are exposed, measured at their respective workstations, and the assessment of their hearing status, evaluated by audiometric medical tests. These factors provide information to predict the development of hypoacusia.

This work describes the results of a comprehensive intercomparison experiment of dynamical and statistical downscaling methods performed in the framework of the SPECS (http://www.specs-fp7.eu) and EUPORIAS (http://www.euporias.eu) projects for seasonal forecasting over Europe, a region which exhibits low-to-moderate seasonal forecast skill. We considered a 15-member hindcast provided by the EC-EARTH global model (similar to ECMWF System 4, but using bias corrected SST) for the period 1991–2012. In particular, we focus on summer mean temperature and evaluate the added value of downscaling for representation of the local climatology (mean values and extremes), improvement of model skill and performance in particular heatwave episodes. Whereas the suitability of dynamical downscaling for reducing the orographic biases of the global model depends on the region and model considered, statistical downscaling can systematically reduce errors in different order moments, from the mean to the extremes (as represented by the 95th percentile here). However, both dynamical and statistical methods lead to similar skill patterns with about the same overall performance as the global model, which shows higher values in south-eastern Europe. Therefore, no relevant added value is found in terms of model skill improvement. Finally, when focusing on the heatwaves of 2003, 2006, 2010 and 2012, the limitations of the global model to detect these hot episodes are inherited by all dynamical and statistical downscaling methods so no added value is neither found in this aspect. This work provides, to our knowledge, the largest and most comprehensive intercomparison of statistical and dynamical downscaling for seasonal forecasting over Europe. Sectorial applications of seasonal forecasting require data for a reduced number of variables from different datasets, mainly (gridded) observations, reanalysis, and predictions from state-of-the-art seasonal forecast systems (such as NCEP/CFSv2, ECMWF/System4 or UKMO/GloSea5). Whilst this information can be obtained directly from the data providers, the resulting formats, temporal aggregations, and vocabularies may not be homogeneous across datasets. Moreover, different data policies hold for the different databases, being only some of them publicly available. Therefore, obtaining and harmonizing multi-model seasonal forecast data for sector-specific applications is an error-prone, time consuming task.In order to facilitate this, the ECOMS User Data Gateway (ECOMS-UDG) was developed in the framework of the ECOMS initiative as a one-stop-service for climate data. To this aim, the variables required by end users were identified, downloaded from the data providers and locally stored as virtual datasets in a THREDDS Data Server (TDS), implementing fine-grained user management and authorization via the THREDDS Access Portal (TAP). As a result, users can retrieve the subsets best suited to their particular research needs in a user-friendly manner using the standard TDS data services. Moreover, an open source, R-based interface for data access and postprocessing was developed in the form of a bundle of packages implementing harmonized data access (one single vocabulary), data collocation, bias adjustment and downscaling, and forecast visualization and validation. This provides a unique comprehensive framework for end-to-end applications of seasonal predictions, hence favoring the reproducibility of the ECOMS scientific outcomes, extensible to the whole scientific community. Sedimentary and photogrammetric analysis of a sector of Cádiz Bay (SW Spain), including the intertidal zone on the left bank of the Río San Pedro tidal channel, were performed to understand its environmental evolution and the main factors that controled it. The study of this especially vulnerable environment has allowed to establish its depositional and morphological responses to the dynamic processes caused by recent environmental or climate changes. In the bank of the Río San Pedro tidal channel, there is a well-developed saltmarsh, which alternates with sandy beaches the data indicate erosional processes. The saltmarsh retreat rate was estimated in 0.65m/yr from 1977 to 2008. In this time-period, the tidal channel experienced a lateral displacement toward the SE of 1.24m/yr, and the beach width decreased from 50 to 21m. Three evolutionary stages were established: a youth stage, represented by a relatively high water energy beach environments; a maturity stage: represented by saltmarsh with deposition of mud and halophyte vegetation; a reactivation stage: represented by erosive features in the saltmarsh, such as tidal pools, tidal channel, etc. The geological location of Cádiz, close to the Eurasian–African plate boundary, account for its relatively high seismic and tsunami activity, that caused significant depositional changes in the area. Others important factors controlling the sedimentation are: first the tides, followed by the waves and the proximity to a sand source, such as the sandy mantle of La Algaida.

Bedform fields from the Piedras River mouth (Huelva, SW Spain) have been studied using side-scan sonar techniques, combined with visual scuba-dives, and direct geometric measuring. The dominant flow regime has been determined from the results in these tidal environments, where erosive processes dominate during ebb, transporting sand as a bedload towards the mouth and central sector of the tidal channel. The process is reversed during tidal floods. During neap tides, larger bedforms maintain their geometry and position, whereas small ripples are re-oriented under different tidal conditions. Sand patches, dunes and ripples are interpreted as sediment bypassing zones. Large forms indicate high energy flow, which can only migrate when flow velocity reaches threshold values for the movement, with net sand transport towards open areas. Depositional features indicate low, moderate, and high-energy conditions. Here, a depositional regime dominated by sediment accommodation is dominant, where sandy sediments are continuously remobilized, transported and re-deposited, even closer to the estuarine mouth. In inner zones finer particles, such as clay and silt, are transported by tides as suspended matter and deposited in protected inner areas. The final results are long narrow tidal flats, which alternate with sandy areas dominated by erosion.

Three horse-derived antivenoms were tested for their ability to neutralize lethal, hemorrhagic, edema-forming, defibrinating and myotoxic activities induced by the venom of Bothrops atrox from Antioquia and Chocó (Colombia). The following antivenoms were used: a) polyvalent (crotaline) antivenom produced by Instituto Clodomiro Picado (Costa Rica), b) monovalent antibothropic antivenom produced by Instituto Nacional de Salud-INS (Bogotá), and c) a new monovalent anti-B. atrox antivenom produced with the venom of B. atrox from Antioquia and Chocó. The three antivenoms neutralized all toxic activities tested albeit with different potencies. The new monovalent anti-B. atrox antivenom showed the highest neutralizing ability against edema-forming and defibrinating effects of B. atrox venom (41 ± 2 and 100 ± 32 µl antivenom/mg venom, respectively), suggesting that it should be useful in the treatment of B. atrox envenomation in Antioquia and Chocó

Demersal fisheries are one of the top anthropic stressors in marine environments. In the long term, some species are more vulnerable to fishery impacts than others, which can lead to permanent changes on the food web. The trophic relationships between predator and prey constitute the food web and it represents a network of the energy channels in an ecosystem. In turn, the network structure influences ecosystem diversity and stability. The first aim of this study was to describe for the first time the food web of the San Jorge Gulf (Patagonia Argentina) with high resolution, i.e. to the species level when information is available. The San Jorge Gulf was subject to intense fisheries thus our second aim is to analyse the food web structure with and without fishery to evaluate if the bottom-trawl industrial fishery altered the network structure and stability. We used several network metrics like: mean trophic level, omnivory, modularity and quasi-sign stability. We included these metrics because they are related to stability and can be evaluated using predator diets that can weight the links between predators and prey. The network presented 165 species organized in almost five trophic levels. The inclusion of a fishery node adds 69 new trophic links. All weighted and unweighted metrics showed differences between the two networks, reflecting a decrease in stability when fishery was included in the system. Thus, our results suggested a probable change of state of the system. The observed changes in species abundances since the fishery was established, could represent the state change predicted by network analysis. In Argentina, periurban agriculture is performed by farmers with inadequate training in the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, developing horticulture with serious soil deterioration. The aim of this work was to monitor bacterial diversity of a horticultural soil (S) and a reference soil (R) as quality index for the design of future restoration strategies. As crops changed together with the agrochemical applications, sample collection was before harvest for strawberries, post-harvest for red peppers, pre-harvest broccoli crop and of a resting soil in treatment with poultry litter as a fertilizing amendment. Bacterial diversity was analysed by the use of high throughput sequencing of the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Analysis of R soils seemed relatively constant in time, enriched in Alphaproteobacteria and Acidobacteria consistent with a reference to soil health. The effect of the intensive use of S soils was proved by differences in Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria relative abundances. The main evidence of the alteration of S soils was the increase in Bacteroidetes and Betaproteobacteria. A weak recuperation trend of S soil microbiota was registered during a post-harvest inactive period. A strong influence of the soil use routine-consisting in high crop rotation and short time-rest cycles-on microbial community structure was verified. These results indicate the microbiota perturbation, caused by the intense use of periurban agriculture soils and will contribute for further actions to improve environment quality.

The assessment of water quality is critical to implement preventive and emergency interventions aimed to limit/avoid environmental contamination and human exposure to toxic compounds. While established high-resolution techniques allow quantitative and qualitative determination of contaminants, their widespread application is not feasible due to cost, time, and need for trained personnel. In this context, the development of easy-to-implement approaches for preliminary detection of contaminants is of the utmost importance. Herein, a portable self-powered microbial electrochemical sensor enabling online monitoring of Cr(VI) is reported. The biosensor employs a bio-inspired redox mediating system to allow extracellular electron transfer between a bacterial isolate from chromium-contaminated environments and the electrode, providing a clear response to Cr(VI) presence. The biosensor shows good linearity (R 2  = 0.983) and a limit of detection of 2.4 mg L -1 Cr(VI), with a sensitivity of 0.31 ± 0.02 μA cm -2 mgCr(VI) -1 L. The presented microbial bioanode architecture enhanced biosensor performance thanks to the improved "electrical wiring" between biological entities and the abiotic electrode surface. This approach could be easily implemented in engineered electrode surfaces, such as paper-based multi-anodes that maximize bacterial colonization, further improving biosensor response. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are bacterial products associated to cell wall or secreted to the liquid media that form the framework of microbial mats. These EPS contain functional groups as carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl, phosphate and sulfhydryl, able to interact with cations. Thus, EPS may be considered natural detoxifying compounds of metal polluted waters and wastewaters. In this work Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) in combination with multivariate analysis (Principal Component Analysis-PCA-) were used to study the interaction of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) and Pseudomonas veronii 2E cells, including bound EPS and cell wall, and its different soluble EPS fractions, previously characterized as Cd(II) ligands of moderate strength. Amino groups present in exopolysaccharide fraction were responsible for Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexation, while carboxylates chelated Cd(II). In lipopolysaccharide fraction, phosphoryl and carboxyl sites were involved in Cd(II) and Cu(II) binding, while Zn(II) interacted with amino groups. Similar results were obtained from cells. These studies confirmed that FTIR-PCA is a rapid analytical tool to provide valuable information regarding the functional groups in biomolecules related to metal interaction. The replacement of forest areas with human-dominated landscapes usually leads to fragmentation, altering the structure and function of the forest. Here we studied the dynamics of forest patch sizes at a global level, examining signals of a critical transition from an unfragmented to a fragmented state, using the MODIS vegetation continuous field. We defined wide regions of connected forest across continents and big islands, and combined five criteria, including the distribution of patch sizes and the fluctuations of the largest patch over the last sixteen years, to evaluate the closeness of each region to a fragmentation threshold. Regions with the highest deforestation rates-South America, Southeast Asia, Africa-all met these criteria and may thus be near a critical fragmentation threshold. This implies that if current forest loss rates are maintained, wide continental areas could suddenly fragment, triggering extensive species loss and degradation of ecosystems services.

Siderophores are low-molecular weight ligands secreted by bacteria as a survival strategy in Fe(III)-lacking environments. They bind not only Fe(III), but Co(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Ga(III) as a detoxification alternative. The synthesis, purification and characterization of siderophores produced by Pseudomonas veronii 2E were evaluated to be applied in future environmental technologies. Optimal production was obtained in Fe(III)-free M9-succinate at 25 °C, 40 h and pH 6.9. Siderophores were chemically characterized as hydroxamate and catechol mixed-type. Spectroscopic analysis indicated their belonging to the pyoverdine family, behaving as ligand to Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Cr(III), which promoted siderophoregenesis during growth. Siderophore-Cd(II) complexation was studied by electrochemical monitored titration revealing one family of moderate-strength binding sites. Mass spectral analysis evidenced the secretion of a variety of molecules (molecular mass ca.1200 u). Non pathogenic Pseudomonas veronii 2E siderophores represent a safe alternative for the concrete application of environmental technologies and clinical procedures.

In this work, a mixed biofilm composed by Pseudomonas monteilii P26 and Gordonia sp. H19 was formed using polyurethane foam (PUF) as immobilization support, for crude oil removal from artificial sea water. Fresh immobilized cells and immobilized cells that were stored at 4°C for two months before use were assessed. The oil removal assays were carried out at microcosm scale at 4, 15 and 30°C. A viability loss of P. monteilii P26 was observed after the storage. The highest removal value (75%) was obtained at 30°C after 7days using fresh immobilized cells on PUF. Enhanced oil bioremoval was obtained at 4°C and 15°C with the previously stored immobilized cells compared to the fresh immobilized cells. Crude oil sorption on the different systems was responsible for the removal of 22-33% oil at the different temperatures. The vertebrate retina is made up of seven principal cell types. These seven retinal cell types arise from multipotent retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). The competency model was proposed suggesting that RPCs undergo a series of irreversible transitions between competency states, in each of which the RPCs are competent to generate a different subset of cell types, but not retinal cells generated at previous moments. In this work, we generalize the stochastic model of neurogenesis of Barton et al. (2014), assuming that the same factor that regulates the differentiation, regulates the competency. The model reproduces the timing of production of different retinal cell types in rats such as it was experimentally measured. The results show that the evolution of the competency during retinogenesis could be explained by a single factor. Its evolution during the cell cycle and the stochastic inheritance in cell divisions determine the sequence and the overlap of production of different retinal cell types during development., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The researches on cortical neurogenesis reveal that asymmetric division plays a key role in controlling the balance between the self-renewal of stem cells and the beginning of the neural differentiation. In such a process a neural stem cell divides by mitosis, originating a postmitotic neuron and other pluripotent stem cell available for subsequent differentiation events. In addition, studies of cell lineage trees of cultured neural progenitors reveal tree shapes and subtrees recurrent, consistent with a stochastic model of division symmetrical/asymmetrical. These considerations have led us to develop a stochastic model of neurogenesis in order to explore the possibility that this is controlled primarily by a single factor (i.e. the concentration of mNumb in the cell).
