1. Nuclear moments of the low-lying isomeric 1+ state of 34Al: Investigation on the neutron 1p1h excitation across N = 20 in the island of inversion

Abstract

The nuclear g factor and quadrupole moment (Qs) have been measured for the low-lying isomeric 1+ state of 34Al, using the β-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) and quadrupole resonance (β-NQR) methods. Spin-polarized 34Al isotopes were produced in a one-neutron pickup reaction induced by a 36S beam on a 9Be target at a kinetic energy of 77.5 MeV/nucleon, and were collected with the LISE fragment separator at GANIL. The measured g factor (|g| in a range of 1.757±0.014) and quadrupole moment (|Qs|=38(5) mb) are in good agreement with shell-model calculations using effective interactions. The similarity between the g factor of 34mAl and that of 32Al confirms a dominant neutron 2p1h configuration π(d5/2)−1⊗ν(d3/2)−1(f7/2)2 of 34mAl. In addition, the enhanced quadrupole moment of 34mAl relative to that of 32Al suggests that the neutron 1p1h excitation across the N=20 shell gap introduces extra nucleon–nucleon correlation and deformation. Abstract

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated 14O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound 15F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at ER=4.757(6)(10) MeV with a width of Γ=36(5)(14) keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a 12C core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the 2s1/2 shell.

Abstract

The full-energy peak efficiency calibration and the energy resolution measurements of the 2 in . × 2 in . LaBr 3 γ -ray detector are presented for γ -ray energies in the 700 keV–17.6 MeV range. Measurements were done using a combination of proton-capture nuclear reactions on Al 27 , Na 23 , K 39 , Li 7 and B 11 for high-energy γ -rays, and radioactive sources such as Co 60 and Eu 152 for the lowest energies. At high energies, two γ -rays in a cascade from proton resonance capture were employed using Al, Na 2 WO 4 , K 2 SO 4 and LiBO 2 targets. The obtained results were compared to the simulations performed using a GEANT4 code.

Abstract

The conference proceedings will be published (on-line) at the EPJ Web of Conferences.; Neutron-induced capture cross sections of short-lived nuclei are of great importance in many areas: fundamental nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and nuclear applications, such as nuclear reactors. However, very often the high radioactivity of the samples makes the direct measurement of these cross sections extremely difficult. The surrogate reaction method [1] is an indirect way of determining neutron-induced cross sections for reactions that proceed through a compound nucleus. In this method, the decaying nucleus of the desired reaction is produced via a transfer or an inelastic scattering reaction (figure 1). This technique presents the advantage that the target material can be stable or less radioactive than the material required for a neutron-induced measurement. Nevertheless, a significant question in the use of the surrogate reaction method lies in the difference between the spin and parity population in the neutron-induced and surrogate reactions. The CENBG collaboration has successfully applied this technique to determine the neutron-induced fission cross sections of several short-lived nuclei such as 233Pa[2], 242;243Cm and 241Am[3]. The results are in very good agreement with neutron-induced data. We are currently investigating whether this powerful technique can also be used to determine radiative capture cross sections. For this purpose, we have studied the transfer reactions 174Yb(3He,pg)176Lu and 174Yb(3He,4Heg)173Yb as surrogates for the 175Lu(n,g) and 172Yb(n,g) reactions, respectively. The g probabilities obtained in our experiment show clear discrepancies with already existing neutroninduced data. In this contribution we will present the experimental set-up and the data analysis. Then, we will focus on the origin of these discrepencies. Perspectives for the surrogate method applied to capture cross sections will be discussed.

Abstract

Measurements of the beta-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei (MgAr) in the vicinity of the N =28 shell closure are reported. Some 22 half-lives have been determined, 12 of which for the first time. Particular emphasis is placed on the results for the Si isotopes, the half-lives of which have been extended from N =25 to 28. Comparison with QRPA calculations suggests that 42 Si is strongly deformed. This is discussed in the light of a possible weakening of the spin–orbit potential.

Abstract

Decay-spectroscopy study of the 67mFe isomer has been performed at GANIL. This isomer is found to have an energy of 387 keV and a half-life of 75(21) μs. An intermediate excited state is introduced at 367 keV. The results are interpreted in terms of various nuclear models, and a deformed shape is inferred for 67Fe.
