1. Structural and thermoelectric properties of Gd Sr2-CoO4 layered perovskites

Abstract

GdxSr2-xCoO4-layered perovskites with varying gadolinium content (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0) were synthesised using a conventional solid-state reaction method in air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that all samples were single phase with a tetragonal I4/mmm K2NiF4-type structure. Rietveld refinements showed that the lattice parameters and the in-plane Co–O bond length decreased with increasing Gd3+ content, suggesting stronger structural distortion. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that cobalt ions on the surface of GdxSr2-xCoO4 had Co3+ and Co4+mixed valence states and many oxygen vacancies. The thermoelectric properties of GdxSr2-xCoO4 (x = 0.7, 0.8) were also investigated. The temperature dependencies of the electrical conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (S) up to 750 °C for Gd0.7Sr1.3CoO4 showed maximum and minimum values at approximately 550 °C. Below 550 °C with increasing Gd3+ content, S increased, whereas σ and the thermal conductivity (κ) decreased, leading to an increase in the figure of merit (ZT). A maximum ZT value of 0.0039 for Gd0.8Sr1.2CoO4 was obtained at 400 °C. The variations of σ, S and κ with x and temperature are discussed.

Abstract

The effect of Cu doping on structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties in La 0.7 Sr 0.25 Na 0.05 Mn 1−x Cu x O 3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) has been investigated. The samples were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. Analysis of XRD patterns indicates that the samples are crystallized in a rhombohedral perovskite structure with R 3 c space group. Rietveld refinements reveal that the lattice parameter a and unit cell volume gradually increase up to x = 0.10 then decrease, while parameter c decreases with increasing Cu content. XPS spectra exhibit the coexistence of the Cu 2+ and Cu 3+ ions in the samples with x=0.15 and 0.20. Magnetization measurements show the Curie temperature Tc and the maximum magnetic entropy change ΔS M decrease with the increase in the Cu content, whereas the relative cooling power (RCP) is basically unaffected. The La 0.7 Sr 0.25 Na 0.05 Mn 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 3 sample shows a maximum ΔS M of 1.75 J kg −1 K −1 and a RCP of 87 J kg −1 at 320 K under a magnetic field change of 20 kOe, and can be one of the potential magnetic refrigerant materials for near room temperature application.

Abstract

The structure and magnetocaloric effect of Mn 5− x Fe x GeSi 2 compounds were studied. Analysis of X-ray powder diffraction and energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy revealed that Mn 5 − x Fe x GeSi 2 alloys with x 5 Si 3 -type structure (space group P 6 3 / mcm ), maintaining the structure of Mn 5 Ge 3 ; and alloys with x =1.5 and 2 consist of the major Mn 5 Si 3 -type phase and the minor Ni 2 In-type phase (space group P 6 3 / mmc ). The results of Rietveld refinement showed that the cell parameters for the Mn 5 Si 3 -type phase decrease with increasing Fe content. The positive slopes in Arrott plots indicate that a second-order ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition occurs. The Curie temperature increases with increasing Fe content from 182 K for x =0.6 to 224 K for x =2. The maximum magnetic entropy change of 3.7 J/(kg K) for x =0.8 was found under a magnetic field change of 0–20 kOe.

Abstract

The controllable growth behavior of Ga wires from Cr2GaC–Ga composite is presented and interpreted. The wire growth behavior was found to be modulated by forming pressure which tunes the connectivity between free Ga and Cr2GaC grains, the growth direction and the barrier force. Among the samples formed under 0 MPa to 900 MPa, the one (sample S4) formed under 500 MPa grew densest Ga wires, because the pressure of 500 MPa produced optimum connectivity between free Ga and Cr2GaC grains, aligned 53% of Cr2GaC basal planes near the surface of the sample parallel to its surface, and at the same time the barrier force was not too big to suppress wires to sprout. A Ga wire growth mechanism based on a catalysis model proposed in our prior work is employed and further developed herein to interpret the experimental observations of wires’ size, morphologies and growth behavior.

Abstract

The structural and electrical properties of the intrinsic PbTiO3, N-doped PbTiO3 and N-VO co-doping PbTiO3 have been studied by using the first-principles calculations based on the hybrid Hartree–Fock density functionals. In addition, Hall effect measurement experiment is performed, both the experimental and theoretical results are compared. In N-doped PbTiO3 system, the N impurity states occur at the top of valance band, and Fermi energy level intersects with valance bands. The band gap becomes narrowed, the N-doped PbTiO3 shows a typical p-type semiconductor characteristic. When oxygen vacancy and N impurity coexist in PbTiO3, the conduction bands move downward and the acceptors are found to be fully compensated.

Abstract

Five-axis machining has been widely used in industry recently; however, it has potential axial table colliding problems. The objective for this paper is proposing an efficient algorithm for five-axis machining collision detections. This research uses a systematic approach for collision detection. The methodologies include the kinematics analyses for five-axis motions, separating axis method for collision detection, and computer simulation for verification. The machine structure is modeled as STL format in CAD software. The input to the detection system is the g-code part program, which describes the tool motions to produce the part surface. This research produced a simulation program by VB programming software and demonstrated a five-axis machining example with collision detection. The system simulates the five-axis CNC motion for tool trajectory and detects for any collisions according to the input g-codes. The result shows that our method improves 4.5 time of computational efficiency, comparing to the conventional detection method.

Abstract

A growth trial was conducted to estimate the optimum requirement of dietary available phosphorus (P) for Chinese sucker juveniles. Triplicate groups of juveniles Chinese sucker (initial mean weight: 1.77 ± 0.02 g, mean ± SD) were fed diets containing graded levels (3.1, 5.3, 7.5, 9.6 and 11.8 g kg⁻¹) of available phosphorus. The basal diet (diet 1), containing 3.1 g kg⁻¹ available P, was supplemented with graded levels of monocalcium phosphate to formulate four experimental diets. The fish were fed twice daily (08:00 and 17:00 h) to satiation for 8 weeks. During the experimental period, the water temperature fluctuated from 27.5 to 30.5 °C and dissolved oxygen was more than 6 mg L⁻¹. The specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio were all significantly increased by dietary available phosphorus up to 7.5 g kg⁻¹ (P 0.05). Efficiency of phosphorus (P) utilization significantly decreased with dietary available phosphorus level (P 0.05). Dietary phosphorus levels also significantly affected the mineralization of vertebrae and scale (P < 0.05), and Ca/P ratios in scale were not influenced by dietary P supplementation, while vertebrae Ca/P ratio decreased with dietary available P levels (P < 0.05) (quadratic effect, P < 0.001). Signs of phosphorus deficiency were characterized by poor growth, slightly reduced mineralization and an increase in body lipid content. The blood chemistry analysis showed that dietary available P had distinct effects on enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase, as well as contents of triacyglycerol and total cholesterol (P < 0.05). Broken-line analysis based on weight gain indicated the minimum available phosphorus requirement for the optimal growth of juvenile Chinese sucker was 7.4 g kg⁻¹. Based on the phosphorus content in whole body, vertebrae or scale indicated that the requirements were 8.3, 8.8 and 8.6 g kg⁻¹ respectively.

The isothermal section of the Nd–Co–Ti system at 500 °C has been investigated by means of XRD and SEM/EDS techniques. Compound Nd2Co3 was observed to exist at 500 °C with the orthorhombic La2Ni3-type structure, space group Cmca and unit cell parameters a = 0.4986(2) nm, b = 1.0000(2) nm, c = 0.7546(2) nm. One ternary compound NdTixCo12−x with the tetragonal ThMn12-type structure (space group I4/mmm) was found with a homogeneity range of 1.43 ≤ x ≤ 1.82, i.e. 11–14 at.% Ti. The structure of NdTi1.7Co10.3 was determined by Rietveld refinement method with the unit cell parameters a = 0.84616 (1) nm, c = 0.47447 (1) nm. The maximum solid solubilities of Ti in Nd2Co17, Nd2Co7, NdCo3, NdCo2, and Nd3Co are 6, 1.5, 2, 4 and 2 at.%, respectively.

The isothermal section of the Nd–Fe–Ga ternary system at 773 K was constructed using X-ray diffraction analysis. Ten binary compounds, Nd2Fe17, Nd5Fe17, Nd9Ga4, Nd5Ga3, NdGa, NdGa2, FeGa3, Fe3Ga4, α-Fe6Ga5 and α-Fe3Ga, and three ternary compounds, NdFe2Ga8, NdFe5Ga7 and Nd6Fe13Ga were existed in this isothermal section. The solid solutions Nd2Fe17.00–15.57Ga0–1.43 (Th2Zn17-type structure, space group R 3 ¯ m ), NdFe5.46–4.65Ga6.54–7.35 (ThMn12-type structure, space group I4/mmm) and Nd6Fe13.0–12.0Ga1.0–2.0 (La6Co11Ga3-type structure, space group I4/mcm) were formed by substitution of Ga for Fe in the compounds Nd2Fe17, NdFe5Ga7 and Nd6Fe13Ga at 773 K, respectively. The ternary compound NdFe2Ga8 is CaCo2Al8-type (space group Pbam) with a = 1.43742 (4), b = 1.24601 (4), c = 0.40479 (1)). The homogeneity range of NdGa2 is from 66.7 to 74.7 at.% Ga in Nd–Ga side but the solid solubility of Fe in this compound is very small. The homogeneity ranges of Nd6Fe13Ga and NdFe5Ga7 are from 5.0 to 10.0 and from 50.3 to 56.5 at.% Ga, respectively. The maximum solid solubilities of Ga in Nd2Fe17 is 7.5. The homogeneity ranges for the other compounds are small.

The phases in the compounds (Gd1−x Ce x )Co2 with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 were investigated by X-ray diffraction, and the magnetocaloric effect for x = 0–0.4 was studied by magnetization measurements. The samples are almost single phase with a cubic MgCu2-type structure for x = 0–0.5. The magnetization decreases with an increase in Ce content. There is almost no magnetic transition for x = 0.5 at 100–350 K. The Curie temperature (T c) of the (Gd1−x Ce x )Co2 compounds with x from 0.1 to 0.4 are 350, 344, 340, and 338 K respectively. The maximum magnetic entropy change is 2.34 J·kg−1·K−1 when x = 0.3. The results of Arrott plots show that the magnetic phase transition is second-order magnetic phase transition in these compounds.

The isothermal section of the Dy–Co–Ti system at 500 °C has been investigated in the whole composition range by means of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The only ternary phase DyTi x Co 12− x is of ThMn 12 -type structure, space group I 4/ mmm , and shows a small homogeneity range of 1 ≤ x ≤ 1.6. The lattice parameters for DyTi x Co 12− x with 1 ≤ x ≤ 1.56 are a = 0.8336(4)–0.8402(1) nm and c = 0.4691(3)–0.4727(1) nm. Along a constant Dy concentration, the solid solubilities of Ti in the compounds Dy 2 Co 17 , DyCo 3 , DyCo 2 and Dy 3 Co are about 2.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 at.%, respectively. The TiCo phase has a homogeneity range of 50–54 at.% Co at 500 °C and dissolves up to 2.0 at.% Dy.

The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the Tb–Dy–Co ternary system at 773 K was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result shows that this section consists of 9 single-phase regions and 8 two-phase regions, and no three-phase region. The compounds Tb 2 Co 17 and Dy 2 Co 17 , Tb 2 Co 7 and Dy 2 Co 7 , TbCo 3 and DyCo 3 , TbCo 2 and DyCo 2 , Tb 4 Co 3 and Dy 4 Co 3 , Tb 12 Co 7 and Dy 12 Co 7 , Tb 3 Co and Dy 3 Co form a continuous series of solid solutions. The single phases Tb and Dy also form a continuous solid solution. The binary compounds TbCo 5 and DyCo 5 were not observed at 773 K. No ternary compound was found. In addition, we experimentally determined the vertical section of pseudobinary system and magnetic property of Tb 1− x Dy x Co 2 ( x from 0 to 1) series alloys, T c decreases and the maximum magnetic entropy change |Δ S M ,max | increases with the increase of Dy content. The Arrott plots and the change of |Δ S M ,max | show that magnetic phase transition from second-order to first-order occurs with the increase of Dy content between x = 0.6 and 0.8.

The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the La–Fe–Ge ternary system at 773 K was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and optical microscopy. The existences of 12 binary compounds, La 3 Ge, La 5 Ge 3 , La 4 Ge 3 , La 5 Ge 4 , LaGe, La 2 Ge 3 , LaGe 2− x , Fe 3 Ge, Fe 5 Ge 3 , Fe 6 Ge 5 , FeGe, FeGe 2 , were confirmed. Three ternary compounds LaFe 2 Ge 2 , LaFe 0.6 Ge 2 and LaFeGe 3 were confirmed too. Ge in Fe, LaGe, LaGe 2− x and Fe 5 Ge 3 and Fe in LaFe 0.6 Ge 2 have solid solution phenomenon. This section consists of 18 single-phase regions, 37 two-phase regions, and 20 three-phase regions.

Abstract

Intermetallics and phase transformations of the zirconium-based alloy, Zr-1.0Sn-0.3Nb-0.3Fe-0.1Cr, were investigated by conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dilation measurement. Three types of precipitates, namely, (ZrNb)2Fe, Zr(CrFe)2, and Zr3Fe, were detected by XRD. The cubic Ti2Ni-type (ZrNb)2Fe was found to be the main precipitate in the alloy, and it was proposed to dissolve at 861°C, whereas Zr3Fe dissolved at 780°C and Zr(CrFe)2 at 814°C. No precipitates were observed at a temperature higher than 900°C. The transformation-start temperature of α-Zr → β-Zr was reconfirmed to be 780°C, and the end temperature of α-Zr → β-Zr was determined to be 955°C. The dilation result also revealed that the martensitic transformation-start temperature, Ms, and the finish temperature, Mf, of this alloy were 741°C and 645°C, respectively.

The phases and magnetocaloric effect in the alloys (Gd(subscript 1-x)Nd(subscript x))Co2 with x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and magnetization measurement. The samples are single phase with a cubic MgCu2-type structure. The Tc decreases obviously with increasing Nd content from 404 K of the alloy with x=0 to 272 K of the alloy with x=0.4; for x=0.3, the Tc is 296 K, which is near room temperature. In the samples (Gd(subscript 1-x)Nd(subscript x))Co2 with x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4, the maximum magnetic entropy change is 1.471, 1.228, 1.280, 1.381 and 1.610 J•kg^(-1)•K^(-1), respectively, in the applied field range of 0-2.0 T. Abstract

A physically based numerical model is developed to predict the microstructural evolution and strengthening in Al–Cu–Mg alloys during isothermal treatments. The modelling of the formation kinetics of the precipitates is based on the Kampmann and Wagner model. The strengthening by the shearable Cu:Mg co-clusters is modelled on the basis of modulus strengthening mechanism and the strengthening by the non-shearable S phase precipitates is based on the Orowan looping mechanism. The model predictions are verified by comparing with the strength and differential isothermal calorimetery data on 2024-T351 aluminium alloys. The microstructural development and strength predictions of the model are generally in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract

The microstructural features of variable polarity plasma arc welded Al–Cu–Mg 2024-T351 with 2319 filler have been studied by TEM, SEM and DSC. Fusion zone, partial melting zone, re-solutionising zone, overageing (for S-phase), peak ageing (for S-phase) and under ageing zones (for S-phase) have been identified. The Ω-phase has been observed between re-solutionising zone and peak ageing zone. The hardness profile contains two peaks. The microstructure development, and resulting hardness and yield strength profiles are modelled using a model which combines primary precipitation, resolution, partial/full melting and resolidification (Scheil type) and re-precipitation, in a two precipitate–two mechanism approach. Hardness profiles and microstructures are accurately predicted. The hardness peak in the re-solutionising zone is due to re-solutionising and subsequent Cu–Mg co-cluster formation; and the second hardness peak is caused by S-phase strengthening.

Abstract

In Al-Cu-Mg with compositions in the α+S phase field, precipitation hardening is a twostage process. Experimental evidence shows that the main precipitation sequence in alloys with Cu contents in excess of 1wt% is involves Cu-Mg co-clusters, GPBII/S'' and S. The first stage of the age hardening is due to the formation of Cu-Mg co-clusters, and the hardening can be modelled well by a modulus hardening mechanism. The appearance of the orthorhombic GPBII/S'' does not influence the hardness. The second stage of the hardening is due to the precipitation of S phase, which strengthens the alloy predominantly through the Orowan looping mechanism. These findings are incorporated into a multi-phase, multi mechanism model for yield strength of Al-Cu-Mg based alloys. The model is applied to a range of alloys with Cu:Mg ratios between 0.1 and 1 and to heat treatments ranging from room temperature ageing and artificial isothermal ageing to rapid heating to the solution treatment temperature. The predictive capabilities of this model are reviewed and its constitutive components are compared and contrasted with a range of other methods, such as the Kampmann-Wagner and JMAK models for precipitation as well as the LSW model for coarsening.

Abstract

The most commonly cited mechanisms for the rapid age hardening of Al–Cu–Mg alloys at about 100–200 °C are hardening by Guinier–Preston B zone formation, formation of Cu–Mg co-clusters and a dislocation–solute interaction mechanism. New experiments on ageing–deformation–ageing cycles at room temperature indicate that no substantial additional age hardening occurs with the addition of deformation to the cycle, and hence, a dislocation–solute interaction mechanism appears unlikely. Instead, strengthening due to modulus hardening generated by the difference in shear modulus of Cu–Mg co-clusters and matrix is proposed as the main strengthening mechanism for room temperature hardening.

Abstract

The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios [superscript 2]H/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 3]He/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 6]Li/[superscript 7]Li, [superscript 7]Be/([superscript 9]Be+[superscript 10]Be), and [superscript 10]B/[superscript 11]B in the range 0.2-1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. The measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, AMS-01, during the STS-91 flight in 1998 June., United States. Abstract

The structural and magnetic properties of DyCo 5− x Ga x compounds with x = 0.55, 0.85, 1.15, 1.45 and 1.75, have been investigated by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the DyCo 5− x Ga x samples are stabilized in single phase with a hexagonal CaCu 5 -type structure (space group P 6/ mmm ) for 0.55 ≤ x ≤ 1.45. The substitution of Co by Ga in this compound increases its lattice parameters a , c and cell volume V but decreases the 3d-sublattice moment and the 3d uniaxial anisotropy. As result, the compensation temperature T comp increases from 199 K (for the sample with x = 0.55) to 260 K (for the sample with x = 1.45). Two spin reorientation transitions, at T SR1 = 460 and T SR2 = 725 K, respectively, for the sample with x = 0.55, only one at T SR3 = 466 K for the sample with x = 0.85 while none for the samples with x = 1.15 or less were found. The Curie temperature decreases with increasing Ga content. The total magnetization for the compound increases at low temperature (e.g. 100 K) but decreases at high temperature with increasing Ga content (e.g. 300 K).

Abstract

The isothermal section of the Dy–Co–Ti system at 500 °C has been investigated in the whole composition range by means of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The only ternary phase DyTi x Co 12− x is of ThMn 12 -type structure, space group I 4/ mmm , and shows a small homogeneity range of 1 ≤ x ≤ 1.6. The lattice parameters for DyTi x Co 12− x with 1 ≤ x ≤ 1.56 are a = 0.8336(4)–0.8402(1) nm and c = 0.4691(3)–0.4727(1) nm. Along a constant Dy concentration, the solid solubilities of Ti in the compounds Dy 2 Co 17 , DyCo 3 , DyCo 2 and Dy 3 Co are about 2.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 at.%, respectively. The TiCo phase has a homogeneity range of 50–54 at.% Co at 500 °C and dissolves up to 2.0 at.% Dy.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 (June 1998) in a 51.7 deg orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A search for antihelium nuclei in the rigidity range 1–140 GV was performed. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1×10^−6 was obtained. The high energy proton, electron, positron, helium, antiproton and deuterium spectra were accurately measured. For each particle and nuclei two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum. Positrons in the second spectrum were found to be much more abundant than electrons. Tracing particles from the second spectra shows that most of them travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field, and that the positive particles (p and e+) and negative ones (e−) originate from two complementary geographic regions. The second helium spectrum flux over the energy range 0.1–1.2 GeV/nucleon was measured to be (6.3 ± 0.9) × 10^−3(m^2 s sr)^−1. Over 90 percent of the helium flux was determined to be 3He at the 90% confidence level

Abstract

The primary proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.2 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at an altitude of 380 km. The complete data set combining three shuttle attitudes and including all known systematic effects is presented.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7 degree orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A total of 2.86 * 10^6 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1 * 10^-6 is obtained., 18 pages, Latex, 9 .eps figures

Abstract

The lepton spectra in the kinetic energy ranges 0.2 to 40 GeV for e − and 0.2 to 3 GeV for e + were measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at altitudes near 380 km. From the origin of the leptons two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum with positrons much more abundant than electrons. Tracing leptons from the second spectra shows that most of these leptons travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that the e + and e − originate from two complementary geographic regions.

Abstract

The helium spectrum from 0.1 to 100 GeV/nucleon was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at altitudes near 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a second helium spectrum was observed. In the second helium spectra over the energy range 0.1 to 1.2 GeV/nucleon the flux was measured to be (6.3±0.9)×10 −3 ( m 2 sec sr ) −1 and more than ninety percent of the helium was determined to be 3He (at the 90% CL). Tracing helium from the second spectrum shows that about half of the 3He travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that they originate from restricted geographic regions similar to protons and positrons.

Abstract

The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ~ 70 m^-2 sec^-1 sr^-1. Abstract

The non-excavation technology was adopted for the construction of a six-lane underpass section of Shanghai Middle Ring Project after taking into account the environmental and existing ground conditions. To construct a sizable underpass in saturated soft soil, surface subsidence control is required. The underpass section with shallow overburden of 4.5-5m has a length of 126m, a width of 34.2m and a height of 7.85m. A new method named Pipe Roof-Box Culvert Jacking (RBJ) therefore was proposed for the building of the underpass structure. The pipe roof was composed of 80 pieces of 970mm pipes and constructed by slurry pipe jacking method. This worked like a guide tunnel, whereas the box culvert jacking was constructed inside the pipe roof structure. This new method has advantages of being reliable and cost effective. This paper elaborates the key technologies and the main procedures involving this new method. The mechanism and result of the method is discussed based on the data of site instrumentation. This paper could be used as a reference for both construction and design of similar projects in future. 34. Capecitabine maintenance therapy in patients with recurrent or metastatic breast cancer

Abstract

Our objective was to investigate the efficacy and safety of capecitabine maintenance therapy (CMT) after capecitabine-based combination chemotherapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer. The clinical data of 139 metastatic breast cancer patients treated from March 2008 to May 2012 with capecitabine-based combination chemotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. When initial disease control was achieved by the combination chemotherapy, we used CMT for 50 patients, while 37 patients were treated with a different (non-CMT) maintenance therapy. We compared time to progression (TTP), objective response rate, disease control rate, clinical benefit rate, and safety of the two groups, and a sub-group analysis was performed according to pathological characteristics. Sixty-four percent of the patients received a median of six cycles of a docetaxel+capecitabine combination chemotherapy regimen (range 1-45); the median TTP (MTTP) for the complete treatment was 9.43 months (95%CI=8.38-10.48 months) for the CMT group and 4.5 months (95%CI=4.22-4.78 months; P=0.004) for the non-CMT group. The MTTPs for the maintenance therapies administered after the initial capecitabine combined chemotherapy were 4.11 months (95%CI=3.34-4.87 months) for the CMT group and 2.0 months (95%CI=1.63-2.38 months) for the non-CMT group. Gastrointestinal side effects, decreased white blood cells and palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia were the main adverse reactions experienced with the combination chemotherapies, CMT and non-CMT treatments. No significant differences in the incidence of adverse reactions were detected in the CMT and non-CMT patients. After initial disease control was achieved with the capecitabine-based combination chemotherapy, CMT can significantly prolong TTP rates with a favorable safety profile.

Abstract

Longitudinal model test of shield tunnel was carried out in this paper. Four types of 50 rings of model tunnel were finished: complete continuous, continuous ring connected with longitudinal joints, nonstaggering and staggering installation. Then longitudinal loading test of 50 rings of the above four model tunnels embedded in sand were implemented. Uniform load and local load were respectively added on the overlay sand. The subsoil of model tunnel was firstly uniform sand and then soft soil would be added to modify the varied subsoil. The test study shows the longitudinal settlement curve is in accordance with Gauss Curve when the tunnel is under local load or the tunnel crosses through the uneven substratum; the settlement increment changes with the distance of load to the axis of tunnel as a linear relation; the influence of longitudinal local load is great when the load is 2-3D (D is the diameter of tunnel) to the axis of tunnel in cross section; larger longitudinal rigidity means larger influence range and fewer settlement. Abstract

A measurement of the cosmic ray positron fraction e+ / (e+ + e-) in the energy range of 1-30 GeV is presented. The measurement is based on data taken by the AMS-01 experiment during its 10 day Space Shuttle flight in June 1998. Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the $\sim 100 \mathrm{MeV}$ to $1 \mathrm{TeV}$ range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected $10^8$ cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space station using secondary $\pi^-$ and $\mu^-$ emissions from primary cosmic rays interacting with \emph{Mir}. This is the first time this reconstruction was performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential backgrounds during the 3 year AMS-02 mission., Comment: To be submitted to NIM B Added material requested by referee. Abstract

Central aortic blood pressure (BP) has been increasingly recognized as having a closer relationship with cardiovascular risks than peripheral BP. However, the effects of particulate matter pollution on central aortic BP have not been clearly demonstrated. In this study, we assessed the association between short-term ambient fine particulate matter (with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm; PM 2.5 ) exposure and central aortic BP in a Chinese community-based population. A total of 4715 visits were in our final analysis, including 2151 visits at the baseline and 2564 visits at the follow-up. Central aortic systolic BP (cSBP) was measured noninvasively using the method of radial artery tonometry with Omron HEM-9000AI machine. Data from air pollution monitoring stations were used to estimate daily PM 2.5 exposure. Generalized additive mixed models with clinical and meteorologic covariates adjusted were used to examine the association between PM 2.5 exposure and cSBP. The relationships between PM 2.5 exposure and cSBP were nonlinear, and significant increments of cSBP were observed when the PM 2.5 exposure concentration was above 100 μg/cm 3 . An interquartile range increase (80.25 μg/m 3 ) in daily PM 2.5 on the day of cSBP measurement (lag 0 day) was associated with 2.54 mm Hg (95% CI, 0.92-4.16) elevation in cSBP. The associations of PM 2.5 with cSBP were not modified by age, sex, body mass index, medications, and comorbid diseases except for cardiovascular disease. Our findings demonstrated that short-term exposure to high concentration of ambient PM 2.5 above 100 μg/cm 3 was associated with significant increases in central aortic BP in a Chinese community-based population.
