Abstract

Most currently, viable double beta decay experiments require highly enriched isotopic sources. These sources must be extraordinarily free of radioactive contamination. The double beta decay experiment NEMO 3 will study 100Mo, for which physical and chemical purification techniques have been investigated. The success of the chemical purification process is discussed in the context of ultra-low background, high-purity germanium spectrometer measurements.

Abstract

To be sensitive to an effective Majorana neutrino mass, 〈 m ν 〉, on the order of 0.1 eV, the NEMO 3 double beta (ββ(0ν)) decay experiment requires precise knowledge and control of the backgrounds. The effect of neutrons and γ-rays from the Frejus underground laboratory (LSM, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane) has been studied during 10 700 h of data collection. The data were taken with a NEMO 2 prototype detector using different shield configurations. Monte Carlo calculations with GEANT/MICAP code and a new library of γ-rays from neutron captures are presented. The implied consequences for the NEMO 3 detector which is under construction are discussed. The neutrinoless double beta decay background induced by neutrons and γ-rays within the LSM will be suppressed to the very suitable level of 0.1 event in a live time of five years given the appropriate shield and magnetic field.

Abstract

The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype for the NEMO-3 detector and to study different modes of double beta decay. Measurements with 100 Mo, 116 Cd, 82 Se and 96 Zr were carried out. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on double beta decays for new Majoron emission modes and limits on effective neutrino–Majoron coupling constants.

Abstract

In the double beta decay (ββ) experiment NEMO-2, the 214 Bi radioactivity has been measured as background for the ββ processes. The analysis of the 214 Bi contamination has been performed via the signature of 214 Po alpha decay. This method has been applied to data taken with enriched 100 Mo and 116 Cd sources. At the level of NEMO-2's sensitivity, in a 1.0 mole yr study of enriched material, the contamination of the sources can be measured in the range of 2.0 mBq kg −1 . The effects of deposited contamination by 222 Rn are also discussed and estimated at the level of 0.3 mBq per square meter of source foil. Backgrounds for neutrinoless double beta decay (ββ0v) are deduced from these measurements and the consequences for the higher sensitivity ββ experiment NEMO-3 are drawn.

Abstract

The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype of the detector NEMO-3 to study 0ν and 2ν double-beta decay (ββ) physics. After ten months of nearly continuous running with an enriched cadmium source (0.92 mol·y of116Cd) aββ2ν half-life ofT1/2=(3.75±0.35(stat)±0.21(syst))·1019 y was measured. Limits with 90% CL on the116Cd half-lives of 5.0·1021 y forββ0ν decay and of 1.2·1021 y forββ0νχ0 decay with a Majoron (χ0) were obtained. Theoretical predictions for 0ν and 2ν decays of116Cd are also presented.

Abstract

From data accumulated over 6140 h with 172 g of enriched molybdenum (1.18 mol yr of $^{100}\mathrm{Mo}$) with the NEMO 2 detector in the Fr\'ejus Underground Laboratory, a clear \ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}2\ensuremath{\nu} signal (1433 events) is observed, leading to a half-life ${\mathit{T}}_{1/2}$=0.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.09(syst) ${10}^{19}$ yr. The experimental two-electron energy spectrum and the two-electron angular distribution are in agreement with the expected ones. Limits for \ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}0\ensuremath{\nu} decays to the ground state, excited states (${2}_{1}^{+}$ and ${0}_{1}^{+}$), and also with Majoron emission are given.

Abstract

In this report we discuss the Fast Ring Imaging Cherenkov technique that we have developed for application to proximity-focused LiF (or CaF2) solid radiator and multiwire chamber photon detector with cathode-pad readout using TEA in CH4 as photosensor. We describe the full-scale Prototype of 12 000 pads (5.334 × 6.604 mm2) we have built, and briefly the dedicated VLSI readout electronics we have developed. We report in detail the investigations we have performed in a hadron test beam at the CERN PS, and compare the results obtained to the expected performances. The maximum momentum for π/K separation at 3σ achieved in these tests is 2.86 GeV/c for LiF (2.39 GeV/c for CaF2). The experimentally achieved Cherenkov merit factors, after correction for azimuthal angle acceptance, are N0 = 65.5 cm−1 (57.7 cm−1), to be compared with 53.8 cm−1 (50.2 cm−1) from Monte Carlo calculations. Operation of the detector over several months has proven the technique reliable and robust, and suitable for application in high-luminosity hadron colliders like LHC, as well as e+e− B-Factories like KEK (Japan), SLAC (USA), and Cornell (USA).

Abstract

We discuss the first test results, obtained with cosmic rays, of a full-scale Fast-RICH Prototype with proximity-focused 10 mm thick LiF (CaF2) solid radiators, TEA as photosensor in CH4, and readout of 12 × 103 cathode pads (5.334 × 6.604 mm2) using dedicated VLSI electronics we have developed. The number of detected photoelectrons is 7.7 (6.9) for the CaF2 (LiF) radiator, very near to the expected values 6.4 (7.5) from Monte Carlo simulations. The single-photon Cherenkov angle resolution σθ = 19.1 (15.2) mrad for the CaF2 (LiF) radiator, to be compared with 19.3 (13.2) mrad predicted by the Monte Carlo calculations. These first results have shown that the Fast-RICH Prototype works well and that the technique is well-suited for the next generation of high luminosity e+e− or hadron colliders.

Abstract

Today, the main challenge of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) systems dedicated to small animal imaging is to obtain high detection efficiency with a highly accurate spatial resolution which depends as well on design of the detector as on the electronics readout system. In this paper, we present a new design of a front-end readout chip with full custom sub-micrometer CMOS implementation in order to obtain a high accuracy on the charge-energy information and to give a time trigger to the Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) with a resolution lower than nanosecond. This chip has been implemented with AMS 0.35 mum process. The readout architectures will be presented and the main simulation and measured results will be shown in this paper.

Abstract

International audience; Today, the main challenge of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) systems dedicated to small animal imaging is to obtain high detection efficiency and a highly accurate localization of radioisotopes. If we focus only on the PET characteristics such as the spatial resolution, its accuracy depends on the design of detector and on the electronics readout system as well. In this paper, we present a new design of such readout system with full custom submicrometer CMOS implementation. The front end chip consists of two main blocks from which the energy information and the time stamp with subnanosecond resolution can be obtained. In our A Multi-Modality Imaging System for Small Animal (AMISSA) PET system design, a matrix of LYSO crystals has to be read at each end by a 64 channels multianode photomultiplier tube. A specific readout electronic has been developed at the Hubert Curien Multidisciplinary Institute (IPHC, France). The architecture of this readout for the energy information detection is composed of a low-noise preamplifier, a CR-RC shaper and an analogue memory. In order to obtain the required dynamic range from 15 to 650 photoelectrons with good linearity, a current mode approach has been chosen for the preamplifier. To detect the signal with a temporal resolution of 1 ns, a comparator with a very low threshold (0.3 photoelectron) has been implemented. It gives the time reference of arrival signal coming from the detector. In order to obtain the time coincidence with a temporal resolution of 1 ns, a Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) based on a Delay-Locked-Loop (DLL) has been designed. The chip is fabricated with AMS 0.35 μm process. The ASIC architecture and some simulation results will be presented in the paper.

Abstract

The NEMO-3 tracking detector is located in the Fr��jus Underground Laboratory. It was designed to study double beta decay in a number of different isotopes. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on the double beta decay process for the isotopes $^{100}$Mo and $^{82}$Se for different Majoron emission modes and limits on the effective neutrino-Majoron coupling constants. In particular, new limits on "ordinary" Majoron (spectral index 1) decay of $^{100}$Mo ($T_{1/2} > 2.7\cdot10^{22}$ y) and $^{82}$Se ($T_{1/2} > 1.5\cdot10^{22}$ y) have been obtained. Corresponding bounds on the Majoron-neutrino coupling constant are $ < (0.4-1.9) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $< (0.66-1.7) \cdot 10^{-4}$., 23 pages includind 4 figures, to be published in Nuclear Physics A

Abstract

The NEMO 3 detector, which has been operating in the Frejus underground laboratory since February 2003, is devoted to the search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bb0nu). Half-lives of the two neutrino double beta decays (bb2nu) have been measured for 100Mo and 82Se. After 389 effective days of data collection from February 2003 until September 2004 (Phase I), no evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay was found from ~7kg of 100Mo and ~1 kg of 82Se. The corresponding lower limits for the half-lives are 4.6 x 10^23 years for 100Mo and 1.0 x10^23 years for 82Se (90% C.L.). Depending on the nuclear matrix elements calculation, limits for the effective Majorana neutrino mass are < 0.7-2.8 eV for 100Mo and < 1.7-4.9 eV for 82Se, Comment: 5 pages Submitted to Phys. Rev. The development of the NEMO3 detector, which is now running in the Frejus Underground Laboratory (L.S.M. Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane), was begun more than ten years ago. Abstract

After 10357 h of running the NEMO-2 tracking detector with an isotopically enriched zirconium source (0.084 mol yr of 96Zr), a ββ2ν decay half-life of T1/2=(2.1+0.8(stat)−0.4(stat)±0.2(syst))·1019 y was measured. Limits with a 90% C.L. on the 96Zr half-lives of 1.0·1021 y for ββ0ν decay to the ground state, 3.9·1020 y to the 2+ excited state and 3.5·1020 y for ββ0νχ0 decay with a Majoron (χ0) were obtained. The data also provide direct limits at the 90% C.L. for the 94Zr half-lives. These limits are 1.1·1017 y for ββ2ν decay to the ground state, 1.9·1019 y for ββ0ν decay to the ground state and 2.3·1018 y for ββ0νχ0 decay to ground state.

Abstract

This article first describes various tests on CsI reflective photocathodes (PC) performed in the laboratory to study the quantum efficiency QE (λ) dependence on the temperature and the ageing problems with the outgassing of the construction materials. Application to a fast RICH detector (0.5 m 2 detector area) with cathode pad readout (5376 channels) is widely discussed. Detailed beam test results are reported concerning the QE dependence on the layer thickness, the choice of the CsI material (powder/microcrystals), the PC temperature and of the quencher used. A CsI QE of 18–19% is achievable at 180 nm, in rather close agreement with values already reported. However, it is shown that the avalanche gain in a MWC coupled to the PC is limited, making a full detection efficiency with the use of a fast readout impossible.

Abstract

To investigate double beta decay processes, the NEMO collaboration began a long-range research and development program in 1988. The NEMO 2 detector, which is now running in the Frejus underground laboratory (L.S.M. Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane), is the second prototype. It consists of a 1 m2 source foil sandwiched between Geiger cell drift chambers for electron tracking and two plastic scintillator walls for energy and time-of-flight measurements. The technical description of the detector is followed by the study of the various sources of background.

Abstract

In this paper we briefly discuss the fast ring imaging Cherenkov detector technique that we have developed for application in proximity-focused geometry with solid crystal radiators (LiF, CaF2), and multiwire chamber photon detector using TEA in CH4 as a photosensor and cathode-pad readout. In particular, we describe the large-area full-scale Prototype of 12000 channels that we have constructed, along with associated technology such as the dedicated VLSI readout electronics that we have developed. We report the performance of the Prototype in a hadron test beam at the CERN PS. These tests give a Cherenkov angle resolution σθ = 13.8 mrad per photon, photoelectron yield Npecorr = 11.20 pe/image, and momentum separation limit p π K (3σ) = 2.86 GeV /c for LiF radiator; and σθ = 17.0 mrad, Npecorr = 9.88 pe/image, and p π K (3σ) = 2.39 GeV /c for CaF2 radiator. The system is well described by Monte Carlo simulations. Operation of the detector over several months has proven it to be reliable and robust. Preliminary test beam results taken with large-area CsI reflective photocathode detectors are also presented.

Abstract

A fast integrated electronic chain is presented to read out the cathode pad array of a multiwire photon detector for a fast RICH counter. Two VLSI circuits have been designed and produced. An analog eight-channel, low-noise, fast, bi-polar current preamplifier-amplifier and discriminator chip serves as the front-end detection electronics. It has an rms equivalent noise current of 10 nA, 50 MHz bandwidth with 10 mW of power consumption per channel. Two analog chips are coupled to a digital sixteen-channel CMOS readout chip, operating at 20 MHz with a power consumption of 6 mW per channel. Readout of a 4000 pad sector requires 2–3 μs, depending on the number of hit pads. The full RICH counter is made up of many such sectors, read out in parallel. The minimum time needed to separate successive hits on the same pad is 70 ns. The conception of the digital chip and its properties are fully presented in this report. The analog chip is described in less detail since it will be fully covered in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract

Fast ring imaging Cherenkov counters, with pad readout for unambiguous image reconstruction, are considered for use in a high luminosity environment. The quantum efficiency of several new photosensitive gases (TMA and DMA) are measured and compared to the known standard gases (TEA and TMAE). A solid CsI/TMAE reflective photocathode is also considered as an alternative fast and efficient photosensor. A detailed experimental investigation has been made of a multiwire photon detector with TEA as the photosensitive converter. This detector, designed as part of a RICH counter for a B factory electron-positron collider, may also be used at hadron colliders as well as at fixed target facilities. Abstract

The heavy liquid bubble chamber Garamelle has been used to study the rate of production of neutral pions in the pionic annihilation of 1.6 GeV/ c antiprotons on free protons. Preliminary results are presented on the relative cross-sections for most channels together with the mean π 0 multiplicity and the first moments for annihilation into 0-prongs, 2-prongs, 4-prongs and 6-prongs.

Abstract

Interactions of 10 GeV/ c K + incident on nuclei producing the K + π + π − system have been analysed by the longitudinal phase-space technique, which improves the selection of coherent events and allows a suitable analysis of the K + π + π − mass spectrum. Taking into account the experimental resulution and form factor effects, and comparing the data with results on protons (hydrogen bubble chamber data), it appears that the low-mass region of the spectrum is favoured by coherent production. Spin-parity analysis of the Q + confirms the 1 + value.

Abstract

We discuss in two parts A and B [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A270 (1988) 289] the latest DELPHI Barrel RICH Prototype test results. The first part A, after a technical description of the prototype, is devoted to detailed experimental studies of the multiwire detector response, associated analog electrons and of the photoelectron collection in the drift volumes. Emphasis is given to the single electron detection efficiency problem and to the accuracy of the three-dimensional photoconversion space point reconstruction. Limitations of the technique and their solution are discussed. These results are used as input data to a Monte Carlo prototype simulation, in part B, to interpret the ring imaging beam tests therein. Finally a measurement of the longitudinal diffusion coefficient for several gas mixtures is given.

Abstract

We present in this part B of the DELPHI Barrel RICH Prototype studies, a test beam investigation of the detector performance for particle identification. The tests have been done with both a proximity focused radiator of 1 cm of liquid perfluoro-hexane C 6 F 14 and a focusing gas radiator of isobutane (50 cm mirror focal length). In the accompanying paper, part A, are given a technical description of the Prototype, the single photoelectron detector response and the spatial resolution attainable which are used throughout this article. The results show that the Prototype performance predicted by Monte Carlo simulations, as a function of the drift distance z d and the particle incidence angle θ b , have been achieved (particle identification between 0.17 and 35 GeV/ c ). The calculations use the known and measured properties of the detector components which have been discussed throughout parts A and B. The single photon Cherenkov angle resolution obtained at z d = 0 drift distance is 8.5 mrad and 4.5 mrad for the liquid and the gas (at θ b = 0°) radiators respectively, as expected from the design. The numbers of detected photoelectrons in the images are 21 and 12 which correspond to a detector merit factor N 0 of 53 cm −1 and 77 cm −1 for the liquid and gas radiators respectively. These numbers are in agreement with the calculations but are limited because of the actual multiwire photoelectron detector performance. We show that N 0 = 65 cm −1 and 96 cm −1 are achievable for the liquid and gas radiators respectively. These last figures include a 90% cathode strip readout efficiency (third measurement coordinate for parallax correction) but no correction for dead space between drift volumes (liquid images only) and electronic dead time.

Abstract

On a selected sample of 2171 events, observed in the big heavy liquid bubble chamber Gargamelle at CERN, the charged current total cross section for antineutrino on nucleons has been determined up to the laboratory energy E v = 8 GeV . The total cross section is found to be a linear function of the antineutrino energy expressed by σ tot (E v ) = (0.26 ± 0.020) × 10 −38 × E v ( GeV ) cm 2 . The energy dependence of 〈q 2 〉 v is found to be given by 〈q 2 〉 v = (0.15 ± 0.04)E v + (0.05 ± 0.12) ( GeV /c) 2 . With a simplified nuclear model the ratio of cross sections on neutrons andprotons has been estimated as a function of energy and for two different values of the scaling variable x . The results are compared with the prediction of the naive quark parton model.

Results are presented on the exclusive charged current antineutrino production of one pion using the data of the Gargamelle propane experiment at CERN PS. The isospin structure of the charged weak current is studied as well as the energy dependence of the total cross section for π − antineutrino production, which is compared with the prediction of the Adler model.

Abstract

We have studied neutral strange particle production in the bubble chamber Gargamelle filled with propane and exposed to antineutrinos from the CERN PS. Cross sections are presented for Λ, Σ0 and K0 production. Associated production reactions (ΔS = 0) have been observed in the charged and the neutral current channels. From 45 candidates for the quasi-elastic reaction ν p → μ + Λ , on bound and free protons, estimates of the axial transition form factor MA have been made using the total cross section and the t distribution. The weighted average from the two methods is MA = 862 ± 190 MeV. From a subsample of 15 candidates for ν interactions on free protons in propane, with (28±6)% background from ν interactions on bound protons, we obtain MA = 883 ± 243 MeV. The polarization of the Λ hyperons has been studied for the quasi-elastic reaction. We observe a significant Λ polarization in the production plane, normal to the Λ line of flight. The observed polarizations agree well with the predicted theoretical polarizations without any contribution from second-class axial coupling.

Abstract

A sample of 766 antineutrino charged current elastic events has been used to extract the variation of the elastic cross section with antineutrino energy and the distribution of d N /d q 2 . The best fit value for the parameter M A obtained from these measurements is M A = 0.91 ± 0.04 GeV/ c 2 for M V = 0.84 GeV/ c 2 . A simultaneous determination of M A and M V gives M A = 0.94 ± 0.07, M V = 0.81

After a short introduction to the ring-imaging technique, the principal types of photosensitive gas detectors are discussed. In the second part, status and results of the DELPHI barrel RICH prototype are presented. A short description of a possible very fast RICH for future hadron colliders is given.

Abstract

Cross sections are presented for antineutrino production of Λ, Σ0 and K0 in strangeness changing reactions. Associated production reactions (ΔS = 0) have been observed in the charged and the neutral current channels. For the elastic reaction vp → μ+Λ, estimates have been made of the axial transition form factor.

Abstract

Single pion production, in antineutrino-nucleon interactions via the neutral current, has been studied in the bubble chamber Gargamelle, filled with propane. Complete analysis of the secondaries, including π0,s, has allowed a detailed study of all channels. After background and nuclear corrections, results are obtained which can be interpreted in terms of isospin structure of the neutral weak current and of the Salam-Weinberg angle. Agreement is found with the currently accepted value of sin2θW and the data suggest an important contribution of I = 32 final states.

Abstract

The Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) was tested with the NEMO-2 detector. Limits at the 90% C.L. on the violation of PEP for p-shell nucleons in 12C were obtained. Specifically, transitions to the fully occupied 1s1/2-shell yielded a limit of 4.2 · 1024 y for the process with emission of a γ-quantum. Similarly limits of 3.1 · 1024 y for β− and 2.6 · 1024 y for β+ Pauli-forbidden transitions of 12C →12N12B) are reported here.

Abstract

The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype of the NEMO-3 detector to study neutrinoless (Oν) and two neutrino (2ν) double-beta decay (ββ) physics. After 10357 h of running with an isotopically enriched selenium source (2.17 mol yr of 82Se) a ββ2ν decay half-life of T 1 2 = (0.83 ± 0.10( stat ) ± 0.07 ( syst )) × 10 20 yr was measured. Limits with a 90% C.L. on the 82Se half-lives of 9.5 × 1021 yr for ββ0ν decay to the ground state, 2.8 × 1021 yr to the (2+) excited state and 2.4 × 1021 yr for ββ0νχ0 decay with a Majoron (χ0) were also obtained.
