Abstract

We forecast the scientific capabilities to improve our understanding of cosmic inflation of CORE, a proposed CMB space satellite submitted in response to the ESA fifth call for a medium-size mission opportunity. The CORE satellite will map the CMB anisotropies in temperature and polarization in 19 frequency channels spanning the range 60-600 GHz. CORE will have an aggregate noise sensitivity of $1.7 ��$K$\cdot \,$arcmin and an angular resolution of 5' at 200 GHz. We explore the impact of telescope size and noise sensitivity on the inflation science return by making forecasts for several instrumental configurations. This study assumes that the lower and higher frequency channels suffice to remove foreground contaminations and complements other related studies of component separation and systematic effects, which will be reported in other papers of the series "Exploring Cosmic Origins with CORE." We forecast the capability to determine key inflationary parameters, to lower the detection limit for the tensor-to-scalar ratio down to the $10^{-3}$ level, to chart the landscape of single field slow-roll inflationary models, to constrain the epoch of reheating, thus connecting inflation to the standard radiation-matter dominated Big Bang era, to reconstruct the primordial power spectrum, to constrain the contribution from isocurvature perturbations to the $10^{-3}$ level, to improve constraints on the cosmic string tension to a level below the presumptive GUT scale, and to improve the current measurements of primordial non-Gaussianities down to the $f_{NL}^{\rm local} < 1$ level. For all the models explored, CORE alone will improve significantly on the present constraints on the physics of inflation. Abstract

The current document bestows an expert synopsis of key new information presented at the 43rd Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) meeting in 2003. Data is presented on the socio-political aspects of and policies on antimicrobial prescribing, novel mechanisms of resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae, and current epidemiological trends in global resistance. Novel information on new (and existing) antimicrobial agents--new penicillins, cephalosporins, monobactams and oxipenem inhibitors, ketolides, glycopeptides, fluoroquinolones (and hybrids), peptides, daptomycin, aminomethylcyclines, glycylcyclines, and newer formulations of agents such as amoxycillin-clavulanate--provides renewed hope that resistant pathogens can be controlled through use of more potent agents. Improved strategies for the use of existing antimicrobial agents, such as the use of high-dose regimens, short-course therapy, also may delay or reduce the development of resistance and preserve the value of our antibiotic armamentarium.

Abstract

Spatially extensive analysis of satellite, climate, and census data reveals human-environment interactions of regional or continental concern in the United States. A grid-based principal components analysis of Bureau of Census variables revealed two independent demographic phenomena, α-settlement reflecting traditional human settlement patterns and β-settlement describing relative population growth correlated with recent construction in non-agricultural areas, notably in coastal, desert, and “recreational” counties and around expanding metropolitan areas. Regression tree analysis showed that β-settlement was differentially associated with five distinct combinations of seasonality, summer heat or cool, intensity of agriculture, and extent of “barren” land. Beta-settlement was greatest in coastal and desert areas, and coincided with national concentrations of threatened and endangered species.

4. Cross Wavelength Comparison of Images and Catalogs

Abstract

We would like to start this discussion by attempting to make a useful, working distinction between catalogs and databases of astronomical objects. It seems to us that such a distinction could be made based upon the mode of access to the information: A catalog may be considered as a list of objects, almost invariably ordered by coordinates; a database, on the other hand, may be distinguished by its ability to extract a set of objects based on user-given criteria, such as all objects within a certain sky region with magnitudes brighter than m in the blue. Catalogs form the basis of the database, which adds the means of multi-criteria access to the information. In concrete terms, one usually thinks of SIMBAD, NED and LEDA as databases, while an ftp site containing electronic lists of objects may be thought of as a catalog storage warehouse.

Abstract

The Planck Satellite will survey the entire sky in 9 millimeter/submillimeter bands and detect thousands of galaxy clusters via their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. The unprecedented volume of the survey will permit the construction of a unique catalog of massive clusters out to redshifts of order unity. We describe the expected contents of this catalog and use an empirical model of the intra-cluster gas to predict the X-ray properties of Planck SZ clusters. Using this information we show how a ? 10 Ms follow-up program on XMM-Newton could increase by ? 100-fold the number of clusters with measured temperatures in the redshift range z=0.5-1. Such a large sample of well-studied massive clusters at these redshifts would be a powerful cosmological tool and a significant legacy for XMM-Newton.

Abstract

Context. About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. Aims. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. Methods. Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. Results. For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

Abstract

We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130 degrees <= l <= 230 degrees and -50 degrees <= b <= -10 degrees). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (nu < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature T-e from Ha and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained T-e ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% (f(d) = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5 +/- 1.5 GHz. We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. By combining physical models for vibrational and rotational dust emission and adding the constraints from the thermal dust spectrum from Planck and IRAS, we are able to present a good description of the AME frequency spectrum for plausible values of the local density and radiation field.

Abstract

We describe the processing of the 336 billion raw data samples from the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) which we performed to produce six temperature maps from the first 295 days of Planck-HFI survey data. These maps provide an accurate rendition of the sky emission at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545 and 857GHz with an angular resolution ranging from 9.9 to 4.4'. The white noise level is around 1.5 mu K degree or less in the 3 main CMB channels (100-217 GHz). The photometric accuracy is better than 2% at frequencies between 100 and 353 GHz and around 7% at the two highest frequencies. The maps created by the HFI Data Processing Centre reach our goals in terms of sensitivity, resolution, and photometric accuracy. They are already sufficiently accurate and well-characterised to allow scientific analyses which are presented in an accompanying series of early papers. At this stage, HFI data appears to be of high quality and we expect that with further refinements of the data processing we should be able to achieve, or exceed, the science goals of the Planck project.

Abstract

The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is designed to measure the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background and Galactic foregrounds in six ~30% bands centered at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545, and 857 GHz at an angular resolution of 10′ (100 GHz), 7′ (143 GHz), and 5′ (217 GHz and higher). HFI has been operating flawlessly since launch on 14 May 2009, with the bolometers reaching 100 mK the first week of July. The settings of the readout electronics, including bolometer bias currents, that optimize HFI's noise performance on orbit are nearly the same as the ones chosen during ground testing. Observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have confirmed that the optical beams and the time responses of the detection chains are in good agreement with the predictions of physical optics modeling and pre-launch measurements. The Detectors suffer from a high flux of cosmic rays due to historically low levels of solar activity. As a result of the redundancy of Planck's observation strategy, theremoval of a few percent of data contaminated by glitches does not significantly affect the instrumental sensitivity. The cosmic ray flux represents a significant and variable heat load on the sub-Kelvin stage. Temporal variation and the inhomogeneous distribution of the flux results in thermal fluctuations that are a probable source of low frequency noise. The removal of systematic effects in the time ordered data provides a signal with an average noise equivalent power that is 70% of the goal in the 0.6-2.5 Hz range. This is slightly higher than was achieved during the pre-launch characterization but better than predicted in the early phases of the project. The improvement over the goal is a result of the low level of instrumental background loading achieved by the optical and thermal design of the HFI.

Abstract

We perform an analysis of the diffuse low-frequency Galactic components in the southern part of the Gould Belt system (130◦ ≤ l ≤ 230◦ and −50◦ ≤ b ≤ −10◦). Strong ultra-violet flux coming from the Gould Belt super-association is responsible for bright diffuse foregrounds that we observe from our position inside the system and that can help us improve our knowledge of the Galactic emission. Free-free emission and anomalous microwave emission (AME) are the dominant components at low frequencies (ν < 40 GHz), while synchrotron emission is very smooth and faint. We separated diffuse free-free emission and AME from synchrotron emission and thermal dust emission by using Planck data, complemented by ancillary data, using the correlated component analysis (CCA) component-separation method and we compared our results with the results of cross-correlation of foreground templates with the frequency maps. We estimated the electron temperature Te from Hα and free-free emission using two methods (temperature-temperature plot and cross-correlation) and obtained Te ranging from 3100 to 5200 K for an effective fraction of absorbing dust along the line of sight of 30% ( fd = 0.3). We estimated the frequency spectrum of the diffuse AME and recovered a peak frequency (in flux density units) of 25.5±1.5 GHz.We verified the reliability of this result with realistic simulations that include biases in the spectral model for the AME and in the free-free template. less likely to be on OMT at baseline, [aspirin (74% vs. 94%), s-blockers (63% vs. 83%) and ACE inhibitors (76% vs. 83%), p 0.03 for all]. The use of insulin was higher in the registry patients (40% vs. 20% p 0.049) and fewer received metformin (50% vs. 77% p 0.007) compared to the enrolled patients. A fewer number of registry patients underwent revascularization (10 vs. 22). The 5-year lipid profile and HbA1c levels were similar for both groups. The composite of death, MI, stroke and revascularization was similar (46%), see Table 1 below. Individually the registry patients had lower incidence of MI and a significantly higher mortality compared to the enrolled patients. Patients in both groups who declined surgical revascularization had the highest mortality rate (36%). CONCLUSION: Significantly different outcomes were observed in registry and enrolled patients. Unlike prior observations mortality was substantially higher in the registry cohort compared to the trial cohort. These results further support the need for large concomitant registry cohort during RCTs testing strategies with the aim that the generalisability of new interventions can be better informed.

The subject of this symposium, Multi-Wavelength Sky Surveys naturally invokes a discussion of methods of astronomical object identification and classification: Given a set of objects detected at a certain waveband, how does one integrate the new sources with previous data? The ALADIN system (Paillou et al. 1994) of the CDS is a software package designed to tackle this problem: It provides simultaneous access to digitized sky photographs, catalogs and databases to facilitate direct, visual comparison of user data with previously classified data, as well as automatic source extraction and calibration tools.

Abstract

Low-speed cathode-ray oscillographs are widely used for examining voltage waveforms in all branches of electrical engineering, and they are now familiar and generally accepted instruments. The special oscillographs designed for examining rapid transients were little used before the war, but radar research required reliable instruments for examining very short pulses. This paper outlines the difficulties which must be overcome in designing a high-speed oscillograph, and describes the characteristics required in the time-base generator, the cathode-ray tube and the signal-input circuits. The limitations of present instruments at the very highest writing speeds are enumerated, and possible remedies are suggested.

Abstract

The paper briefly outlines the circuits used for measuring range in radar equipments. The errors encountered are considered and it is shown that these can all be eliminated or made very small, with the exception of the zero error which is inevitable. Three methods of measuring the zero error are described, particular attention being given to an electronic system which requires neither bulky apparatus nor the surveying of targets. The accuracy possible with this electronic calibrator is shown to depend on the ranging system of the particular radar equipment, but results within ten yards of the true value can usually be obtained without unduly complicating the measurements.
