Ongoing global warming and increasing drought frequencies impact plant populations and potentially drive rapid evolutionary adaptations. Historical comparisons, where plants grown from seeds collected in the past are compared to plants grown from freshly collected seeds from populations of the same sites, are a powerful method to investigate recent evolutionary changes across many taxa. We used 21-38 year-old seeds of 13 European plant species, stored in seed banks and originating from Mediterranean and temperate regions, together with recently collected seeds from the same sites for a greenhouse experiment to investigate shifts in flowering phenology as a potential result of adaptive evolution to changes in drought intensities over the last decades. We further used single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers to quantify relatedness and levels of genetic variation. We found that, across species, current populations grew faster and advanced their flowering. These shifts were correlated with changes in aridity at the population origins, suggesting that increased drought induced evolution of earlier flowering, whereas decreased drought lead to weak or inverse shifts in flowering phenology. In five out of the 13 species, however, the SNP markers detected strong differences in genetic variation and relatedness between the past and current populations collected, indicating that other evolutionary processes may have contributed to changes in phenotypes. Our results suggest that changes in aridity may have influenced the evolutionary trajectories of many plant species in different regions of Europe, and that flowering phenology may be one of the key traits that is rapidly evolving.Highlighted student paperWe demonstrated that accurately sampled and stored seed collections from conventional seed banks can, with some limitations, be used in a similar way as the increasingly popular resurrection approach sensu stricto. Given the vast availability of seeds stored in seed banks, this opens up a large potential for future research on rapid evolutionary adaptation to changing environmental conditions across a wide variety of taxa suitable for resurrection. Furthermore, this work is unique and novel, as we combine greenhouse experiments with molecular and climatic data to disentangle potential drivers for the observed phenotypic evolution, which, to our knowledge, was never done in resurrection studies.

We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural clines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale. This repository stores data produced from a genomic and epigenomic large-scale survey of natural populations of Thlaspi arvense, investigating the genetic and environmental bases of epigenetic variation. 207 lines from across Europe were grown in common environment and scored for genetic and DNA methylation variation by Whole Genome Sequencing and Whole Genome Bisulfite Sequencing respectively. This repository includes: 1) The original mean methylation values for all lines, the respective processed values (corrected for non-conversion rate by subtracting the "Surplus_0.6NCR", and optionally corrected for coverage and transformed), used for Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) and correlation with climatic variables. In addition, the weighted methylation values (Schultz et al. 2012) are available. 2) Differentially Methylated Regions and Variance Decomposition Analysis results, obtained with scripts available at https://github.com/Dario-Galanti/popDMRs_refine_VCA. 3) Gene Body Methylation (GBM) classification for each line and sequence context. A binomial test was applied to each coding sequence (CDS) to determine if its fraction of methylated cytosines was higher than average (Takuno and Gaut 2013). A 0 indicates a non-significant test, a 1 indicates a significant test. Climate warming changes the phenology of many species. When interacting organisms respond differently, climate change may disrupt their interactions and affect the stability of ecosystems. Here, we used GBIF occurrence records to examine phenology trends in plants and their associated insect pollinators in Germany since the 1960s. We found strong phenological advances in plants, but differences in the extent of shifts among pollinator groups. The temporal trends in plant and insect phenologies were generally associated with interannual temperature variation, and thus likely driven by climate change. The phenological advancement of plants did not depend on their level of pollinator dependence. When examining the temporal co-occurrence of plant-pollinator pairs from 1980 onwards, the temporal trends in their synchrony again depended on the pollinator group: while the synchrony of plant-butterfly interactions remained unchanged, interactions with bees and hoverflies tended to become more synchronized, mainly because the phenology of plants responded more strongly to climate change and plants caught up with these pollinators. If the observed trends continue, these interactions are expected to become more asynchronous again in the future. Our study demonstrates that climate change affects the phenologies of interacting groups of organisms, and that it also influences their synchrony.

Allozyme markers were used to fingerprint clones of the grassland plant Hieracium pilosella L. and, by inference, to estimate the relative importance of sexual and vegetative reproduction in a population. Field studies in populations of clonal plant species have often reported negligible or absent recruitment from seed. In contrast, studies of genetic markers have found substantial clonal diversity in populations, suggesting recruitment of new genets into established populations. Our results showed that H. pilosella regenerates from seed both within and between dense clonal patches. Two sites differing in environmental conditions were sampled to investigate how the balance between seed-derived and stolon-derived recruitment changes with biotic and abiotic stress. In a relatively drought-prone site on a south-facing slope, the balance was shifted towards recruitment from seed, compared with a mesic site in which vegetative regeneration was more important.

This paper describes the preparation and characterization of a fixed bed catalytic reactor based on sintered metals. A silicone elastomer solution is used to cover the internal surface of the sintered metal with a highly porous continuous silica layer, on which the active component can be applied. These reactors can be used for processes in which a uniform temperature within the catalyst bed is essential.
