Abstract: The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, MW, using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera-electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain MW ¼ 80;433:5 T 6:4stat T 6:9syst ¼ 80;433:5 T 9:4 MeV=c2, the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega-electron volts; c, speed of light in a vacuum). Abstract: The structuring of laser light with non-diffracting vector distributions, optical vortices, or high angular momentum are being increasing exploited. We present a system for the synthesis of these arbitrary intensity and phase profiles through a number of carrier-envelope-phase stabilized coherent frequency and spatial combs. Adjusting the differences between adjacent combs allows synthesis of a combined field which can be structured, directed, and improved in the presence of propagation noise. Abstract: At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton (pp¯) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino (eν) pairs are produced predominantly in the process pp¯→W(→eν)+X. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the u- to d-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001-2011 and corresponding to 9.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Numerical tables of the measurement are provided. © 2021 authors. Abstract: We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the φ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to 5.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such a particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for the hypothetical φ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/c2. These are the most stringent constraints to date. © 2019 authors. Published by the American Physical Society.

Abstract: This paper presents a study of the production of a single W boson in association with one or more jets in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96 TeV, using the entire data set collected in 2001-2011 by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.0 fb-1. The W boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the W(→μν)+jets cross section to the W(→eν)+jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of e-μ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity (W+≥N jets with N=1, 2, 3, or 4) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions. © 2018 authors.

Abstract: In a plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA), using advanced injection techniques such as the density down-ramp injection is a promising approach for generating electron beams with ultralow emittance. In this study, we describe how such a scheme could be realized using the beam from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) accelerator as a driver. Moreover, we explore the potential applications of such high-brightness e-beams in a facility like LCLS and in novel concepts for compact FELs.

Abstract: International Linear Collider (ILC) interaction region beam sizes and component position stability requirements will likely be as small as a few nanometers. It is important to the ILC design effort to demonstrate that these tolerances can be achieved–ideally using a beam-based stability measurement. We developed a high resolution RF cavity Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system. A triplet of these BPMs, installed in the extraction line of the KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) and tested with its ultra-low emittance beam, achieved a position measurement resolution of 15 nm. A metrology system for the three BPMs was subsequently installed. This system employed optical encoders to measure each BPM's position and orientation relative to a zero-coefficient of thermal expansion carbon fiber frame. We have demonstrated that the three BPMs behave as a rigid-body at the level of less than 5 nm.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the total WW and WZ production cross sections in pp collision at s=1.96 TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic W boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a W or a Z boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb-1. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides 3.7σ evidence of the summed production processes of either WW or WZ bosons with a measured total cross section of σWW+WZ=13.7±3.9 pb. Independent measurements of the WW and WZ production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay patterns of the W and Z bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of WW and of WZ dibosons are independently seen with significances of 2.9σ and 2.1σ, respectively, with total cross sections of σWW=9.4±4.2 pb and σWZ=3.7-2.2+2.5 pb. The measurements are consistent with standard-model predictions. © 2016 American Physical Society.

Abstract: SLAC E-158 is an experiment designed to make the first measurement of parity violation in Moller scattering. E-158 will measure the right-left cross-section asymmetry, A_LR^Moller, in the elastic scattering of a 45-GeV polarized electron beam off unpolarized electrons in a liquid hydrogen target. E-158 plans to measure the expected Standard Model asymmetry of ~10^-7 to an accuracy of better than 10^-8. To make this measurement, the polarized electron source requires for operation an intense circularly polarized laser beam and the ability to quickly switch between right- and left-helicity polarization states with minimal right-left helicity-correlated asymmetries in the resulting beam parameters (intensity, position, angle, spot size, and energy), ^beam A_LR's. This laser beam is produced by a unique SLAC-designed flashlamp-pumped Ti:Sapphire laser and is propagated through a carefully designed set of polarization optics. We analyze the transport of nearly circularly polarized light through the optical system and identify several mechanisms that generate ^beam A_LR's. We show that the dominant effects depend linearly on particular polarization phase shifts in the optical system. We present the laser system design and a discussion of the suppression and control of ^beam A_LR's. Abstract: We report a measurement of single top quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to 7.5 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events consistent with the single top quark decay process t→Wb→νb by requiring the presence of an electron or muon, a large imbalance of transverse momentum indicating the presence of a neutrino, and two or three jets including at least one originating from a bottom quark. An artificial neural network is used to discriminate the signal from backgrounds. Abstract: We report on the design of the rf photoinjector of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The rf photoinjector is required to produce a single 150 MeV bunch of {approximately}1 nC and {approximately}100 A peak current at a repetition rate of 120 Hz with a normalized rms transverse emittance of {approximately}1 {pi} mm-mrad. The design employs a 1.6-cell S-band rf gun with an optical spot size at the cathode of a radius of {approximately}1 mm and a pulse duration with an rms sigma of {approximately}3 ps. The peak rf field at the cathode is 150 MV/m with extraction 57 {degree} ahead of the rf peak. A solenoidal field near the cathode allows the compensation of the initial emittance growth by the end of the injection linac. Spatial and temporal shaping of the laser pulse striking the cathode will reduce the compensated emittance even further. Also, to minimize the contribution of the thermal emittance from the cathode surface, while at the same time optimizing the quantum efficiency (QE), the laser wavelength for a Cu cathode should be tunable around 260 nm. Following the injection linac the geometric emittance simply damps linearly with energy growth. PARMELA simulations show that this design willmore » produce the desired normalized emittance, which is about a factor of two lower than has been achieved to date in other systems. In addition to low emittance, we also aim for laser amplitude stability 1% in the UV and a timing jitter in the electron beam of 0.5 ps rms, which will lead to less than 10% beam intensity fluctuation after the electron bunch is compressed in the main linac.« less

Abstract: We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for D0→K+π- to the Cabibbo-favored decay D0→K-π+. The charge conjugate decays are included. A signal of 3.3×104 D*+→π +D0, D0→K+π- decays is obtained with D0 proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D0 lifetimes. The data were recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.6 fb-1 for pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV. Assuming CP conservation, we search for D0-D ̄0 mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be R D=(3.51±0.35)×10-3, y′=(4. 3±4.3)×10-3, and x′2=(0.08±0.18) ×10-3. We report Bayesian probability intervals in the x ′2-y′ plane and find that the significance of excluding the no-mixing hypothesis is equivalent to 6.1 Gaussian standard deviations, providing the second observation of D0-D̄0 mixing from a single experiment. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract: The Stanford 3-km linear accelerator at SLAC has operated exclusively since early 1992 using a polarized electron beam for its high-energy physics programs. The polarized electron source now consists of a diode-type gun with a strained-lattice GaAs photocathode DC biased at high voltage and excited with circularly polarized photons generated by a pulsed, Ti:sapphire laser system. The electron polarization at the source is > 80%. To date the source has met all the beam requirements of the SLC and fixed target programs with < 5% downtime.

Abstract: The Stanford Linear Collider injector requires two 2 ns pulses of 4.5–5.5 × 10 10 electrons, separated by 61 ns at 120 Hz, from its source. Since 1992, these currents have been provided by a polarized electron source based on GaAs photocathodes. A beam polarization of 76 ± 4% has been measured at the end of the 50 GeV linac. At low photocathode quantum efficiencies, and for excitation near threshold, the maximum current delivered by the source is constrained, not by the space charge limit of the gun, but by a “charge limit” of the photocathode. The charge limited current is proportional to the photocathode quantum efficiency, but the proportionality varies for different photocathode types. Experience with high polarization strained GaAs photocathodes on a test beamline and on the SLC is presented.

Abstract: The next generation of linear colliders — represented by the Japanese Linear Collider (JLC) and the Next Linear Collider (NLC) — will probably utilize polarized electrons generated by a photocathode gun. A photocathode gun with high polarization ( P e ) photocathodes (up to P e ∼ 80% achieved to date) is currently providing polarized electrons for the SLC. The SLC source requires subharmonic bunching at low energy to reduce the bunch length prior to S-band bunching and a damping ring at high energy to reduce the transverse emittance. The use of an rf gun can eliminate the former and possibly simplify the latter. However, rf guns as presently developed have serious problems with vacuum contamination, which would quickly lower the quantum efficiency (QE) of a semiconductor photocathode. In addition, the “charge limit” previously reported for high peak current pulses puts a limit on the laser power usable for photoexciting a low QE cathode near the bandgap threshold. These problems have so far precluded any serious attempt to design an rf gun for polarized electrons. Several technical advances that now improve the prospects for a practical polarized electron rf gun are described. Finally, new ideas for high polarization photocathodes that permit operation in a relatively poor vacuum and techniques being explored to mitigate the low QE “charge limit” are discussed.

Abstract: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an x-ray Free-Electron Laser (FEL) project that has just achieved its first lasing at 1.5 {angstrom} radiation wavelength. The very bright electron beam required to drive this FEL is susceptible to a microbunching instability in the magnetic bunch compressors that may increase the slice energy spread beyond the FEL tolerance. To control the slice energy spread and to suppress the microbunching instability, a laser heater (LH) system is installed in the LCLS injector area at 135 MeV, right before the RF deflector that is used for the time-resolved electron diagnostics. This unique component is used to add a small level of intrinsic energy spread to the electron beam in order to Landau damp the microbunching instability before it potentially breaks up the high brightness electron beam. The system was fully installed and tested in the fall of 2008, and effects of heating on the electron beam and the x-ray FEL were studied during the 2009 commissioning period. The laser heater system is composed of a 4-dipole chicane; a 9-period, planar, permanent-magnet, adjustable-gap undulator at the center of the chicane; one OTR screen on each side of the undulator for electron/laser spatial alignment; and more » an IR laser (up to 15-MW power) which co-propagates with the electron beam inside the undulator generating a 758-nm energy modulation along the bunch. The final two dipoles of the 4-dipole chicane time-smear this modulation leaving only a thermal-like intrinsic energy spread within the bunch. Table 1 lists the main parameters for this system. The very bright electron beam required for an x-ray free-electron laser (FEL), such as the LCLS, is susceptible to a microbunching instability in the magnetic bunch compressors, prior to the FEL undulator. The uncorrelated electron energy spread in the LCLS can be increased by an order of magnitude to provide strong Landau damping against the instability without degrading the FEL performance. To this end, a 'laser-heater' system has been installed in the LCLS injector, which modulates the energy of a 135-MeV electron bunch with an IR laser beam in a short undulator, enclosed within a four-dipole chicane. The last half of the chicane time-smears the energy modulation leaving an effective thermal energy spread increase. We present the first commissioning results of this system, its operational issues, its impact on the microbunching instability, and finally its effect on the FEL performance. « less

Abstract: The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is currently operating with a photocathode electron gun (PEG) to produce polarized electrons for its experimental program. Bunch intensities of up to 1011 electrons within 2 ns (8 A) are required from the electron gun. Operation of PEG has demonstrated a charge limit phenomenon, whereby the charge that can be extracted from the gun with an intense laser beam saturates at significantly less than 1011 electrons (the expected space‐charge‐limited charge) when the photocathode quantum efficiency is low. Studies of this charge limit phenomenon observed with a GaAs photocathode are reported.

Abstract: A series of experiments were conducted at the Stanford superconducting accelerator free electron laser (SCA/FEL) to compare the energy extracted from the electron beam with the optical output energy. When all known losses were taken into account, it was found that approximately half of the energy extracted from the electrons did not appear in the optical output. Measurements indicated a lack of any nonlinear optical losses or optical absorption in the cavity mirrors. At this time, the source of the loss is not known.

Abstract: The Linac Coherent Light Source is a SASE x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) project presently under construction at SLAC [J. Arthur et al., SLAC-R-593, 2002.]. The injector section, from drive laser and rf photocathode gun through first bunch compressor chicane, was installed in the fall of 2006. The initial system commissioning with an electron beam was completed in August of 2007, with the goal of a 1.2-micron emittance in a 1-nC bunch demonstrated. The second phase of commissioning, including second bunch compressor and full linac, is planned for 2008, with FEL commissioning in 2009. We report experimental results and experience gained in the first phase of commissioning, including the photocathode drive laser, rf gun, photocathode, S-band and X-band rf systems, first bunch compressor, and the various beam diagnostics.

Abstract: The SCA-FEL can now provide FEL beams to users in a wavelength range extending from longer than 3.5 to shorter than 0.5 /spl mu/m. Harmonic generation can extend the short-wavelength range. As an example of the operational characteristics, during a 3 week run in May-June 1989, the SCA-FEL provided 18 days of FEL beam at 16-18 hours/day. The FEL operated at 3.5 /spl mu/m, and in a 20% band centered at 1.54 /spl mu/m. 30 W of optical power was extracted in 3 ms macropulses with a 0.08% line width and a 3 ps micropulse.

Abstract: Measurements confirm that, with external steering, wiggler errors (1.2% rms over 120 periods) do not appreciably broaden the spontaneous spectrum. Calculations indicate that larger errors could be tolerated if they did not cause steering errors. Efforts are made to reconcile the observed FEL gain with optical and electron-beam measurements.

The bunch length and the energy-Z correlation of the bunch are measured at the end of the linac using a synchrotron light monitor diagnostic at a high dispersion point in the A-line and a transverse RF deflecting cavity at the end of the linac. Measurements of the bunch length in ESA were made using high frequency diodes (up to 100 GHz) and pyroelectric detectors at a ceramic gap in the beamline. Modelling of the beam's longitudinal phase space through the linac and A-line to ESA is done using the 2-dimensional tracking program LiTrack, and LiTrack simulation results are compared with data. High frequency diode and pyroelectric detectors are planned to be used as part of a bunch length feedback system for the LCLS EEL at SLAC. The LCLS also plans precise bunch length and energy-Z correlation measurements using transverse RF deflecting cavities.

Abstract: The LCLC RF gun requires a water based thermal system to tune the resonance frequency of the cavity to 2856.03 MHz. The RF system operates in pulsed mode with bursts of 2 - 3 musec. duration at a repetition rate of 30 - 120 Hz. The thermal system operates in combination with the low-level RF system (LLRF) to set the operation point of the cavity. The LLRF system controls the amplitude and phase of the cavity voltage and defines the necessary slow signals to the thermal system. The thermal system operates by pre-heating / pre-cooling the water and mixing both channels to achieve the temperature to control the cavity resonant frequency. The tune control of the RF gun includes two systems with different dynamics. The dynamics of the thermal system is slow while the RF system is fast. Additionally, different actuators in the system present limits that introduce non-linearities to be taking into account during the start up process. Combining these characteristics, a controller is designed for the resulting hybrid system that allows convergence in large for all the operation conditions and achieve the performance in the magnitude and phase of the cavity voltage required around the operation point.

Abstract: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a SASE X-ray free-electron laser project presently under construction at SLAC [1]. The injector section from RF photocathode gun through first bunch compressor chicane was installed during the fall of 2006. The first bunch compressor is located at 250 MeV and nominally compresses a 1-nC electron bunch from an rms length of about 1 mm to 0.2 mm. Transverse phase space and bunch length diagnostics are located immediately after the chicane. We present preliminary measurements and simulations of the longitudinal and transverse phase space after the chicane in various beam conditions, including extreme compression with micron-scale current spikes.

Abstract: Requirements for the LCLS injector drive laser present significant challenges to the design of the system. While progress has been demonstrated in spatial shape, temporal shape,UV generation and rep-rate, a laser that meets all of the LCLS specifications simultaneously has yet to be demonstrated. These challenges are compounded by the stability and reliability requirements. The drive laser and transport system has been installed and tested. We will report on the current operational state of the laser and plans for future improvements.

Abstract: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC will be the brightest X-ray laser in the world when it comes on line. In order to achieve the brightness a 200fS length electron bunch is passed through an undulator. To create the 200fS, 3kA bunch, a 10pS electron bunch, created from a photo cathode in an RF gun, is run off crest on the RF to set up a position to energy correlation. The bunch is then compressed by chicanes. The stability of the RF system is critical in setting up the position to energy correlation. Specifications derived from simulations require the RF system to be stable to below 200fS in several critical injector stations and the last kilometer of linac. The SLAC linac RF system is being upgraded to meet these requirements.

Abstract: The ultra-short bunches of the electron beam for LCLS are generated in two 4-dipole bunch compressors located at energies of 250 MeV and 4.3 GeV. Although an absolute measurement of the bunch length can be done by using a transverse deflecting cavity in an interceptive mode, a non-interceptive single shot method is needed as a relative measurement of the bunch length used in the continuous feedback for beam energy and peak current. We report on the design and implementation of two monitors measuring the integrated power of coherent edge radiation from the last dipole in each chicane.

Abstract: We report preliminary results of beam tests of the FONT3 Linear Collider intra-train position feedback system prototype at the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. The feedback system incorporates a novel beam position monitor (BPM) processor with a latency below 5 nanoseconds, and a kicker driver amplifier with similar low latency. The 56 nanosecond-long bunchtrain in the ATF extraction line was used to test the prototype BPM processor. The achieved latency will allow a demonstration of intra-train feedback on timescales relevant even for the CLIC Linear Collider design. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract: Keeping nanometer-sized beams in collision is an essential component in achieving design luminosity in a linear collider. The NLC stabilization strategy is conservative by including enough redundancy so that if some part does not work to specification or the incoming beam motion is worse than expected, the beams will still be kept in collision. We show simulation results with both realistic and pessimistic assumptions about the response of the ground motion, inertial stabilization, intratrain and intertrain feedback systems. By providing backup systems, and by allowing some systems to perform more poorly than design, it is possible to have a high level of confidence that the beams can be stabilized successfully.

Abstract: Accelerator structures of a wide variety have been damaged by RF breakdowns. Very little is known about the mechanisms that cause the breakdown and the damage although there has been theoretical work. Using an array of ultrasonic acoustic emission sensors we have been able to locate and classify breakdown events more accurately than possible using microwave techniques. Data from the technique has led to improvements in the design of the NLC X-band RF structure. We report results of acoustic emission studies at the DESY TESLA Test Facility and the SLAC NLC Test Accelerator.

Abstract: Linear collider (LC) interaction region beam sizes and component position stability requirements are expected to be a few nanometers. It is important to show that the related tolerances can be achieved, with an electron beam if possible. Using recently developed component stabilization technology, very high-resolution beam position monitors (BPM's), and the ultra-low emittance beam at the KEK ATF, we plan to demonstrate the required stabilization. Our first step is to develop high-resolution RF cavity beam position monitors, using either C or X band frequencies. A C-band cavity BPM with a resolution of 25 nm has been reported in tests at FFTB. By correcting for the effects of nonaxial trajectories and using both position and angle BPM movers, we expect to be able to demonstrate a resolution of 2 to 3 nm over a dynamic range of /spl plusmn/ 20 um. Abstract: It has been shown that high performance cavity BPM's are capable of accurate beam trajectory angle and beam 'tilt', (x-z or y-z correlation) measurements. Such a device will be very useful for the optimization of a variety of beamlines, such as high current linacs, bunch rotators and storage rings. The signal from a nonaxial trajectory or a tilted beam is in quadrature to that observed from a simple displacement of a very short bunch. Using in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) demodulation of the cavity BPM signal, it is possible to separate position and angle/tilt. In this paper, we present results of beam angle and tilt monitor tests carried out in the KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) extraction line.

Abstract: Recent developments in the design of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) positron source based on updated beam parameters are described. The unpolarized NLC positron source consists of a dedicated 6.2 GeV S-band electron accelerator, a high-Z positron production target, a capture system and an L-band positron linac. The 1998 failure of the SLC target which is currently under investigation may lead to a variation of the target design. Progress towards a polarized positron source is also presented. A moderately polarized positron beam colliding with a highly polarized electron beam results in an effective polarization large enough to explore new physics at NLC. One of the schemes towards a polarized positron source incorporates a polarized electron source, a 50 MeV electron accelerator, a thin target for positron production and a new capture system optimized for high-energy small angular divergence positrons.

A Q-switched and cavity-dumped Ti:Sapphire laser, pumped by a doubled YAG laser is used. This laser delivers typically 50 /spl mu/J to the photocathode with the required 2 nanosecond, double pulse, 120 Hz time structure. The laser operates at wavelengths between 760 nm and 870 nm. Abstract: The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the University of California at Los Angeles, have collaborated to create a conceptual design for a Free-Electron-Laser (FEL) R&D facility operating in the wavelength range 1.5-15 {angstrom}. This FEL, called the ''Linac Coherent Light Source'' (LCLS), utilizes the SLAC linac and produces sub-picosecond pulses of short wavelength x-rays with very high peak brightness and full transverse coherence. The first two-thirds of the SLAC linac are used for injection into the PEP-II storage rings. The last one-third will be converted to a source of electrons for the LCLS. The electrons will be transported to the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) Facility, which will be extended to house a 122-m undulator system. In passing through the undulators, the electrons will be bunched by the force of their own synchrotron radiation to produce an intense, spatially coherent beam of x-rays, tunable in energy from 0.8 keV to 8 keV. The LCLS will include two experiment halls as well as x-ray optics and infrastructure necessary to make use of this x-ray beam for research in a variety of disciplines suchmore » as atomic physics, materials science, plasma physics and biosciences. Abstract: The SLAC Gun Test Laboratory apparatus, the first two meters of which is a replica of the SLAC injector, is used to study the production of intense, highly-polarized electron beams required for the Stanford Linear Collider and future linear colliders. The facility has been upgraded with a Mott polarimeter in order to characterize the electron polarization from photocathodes operating in a DC gun. In particular, SLAC utilizes p-type, biaxially-strained GaAs photocathodes which have produced longitudinal electron polarizations greater than 80% while yielding pulses of 5 A/cm/sup 2/ at an operating voltage of 120 kV. Among the experiments performed include studying the influences of the active layer thickness, temperature, quantum efficiency and cesiation on the polarization. The results might help to develop strained photocathodes with higher polarization.

Abstract: Compton scattering techniques for the measurement of the transverse beam size of particle beams at future linear colliders (FLC) are proposed. At several locations of the beam delivery system (BDS) of the FLC, beam spot sizes ranging from several hundreds to a few micrometers have to be measured. This is necessary to verify beam optics, to obtain the transverse beam emittance, and to achieve the highest possible luminosity. The large demagnification of the beam in the BDS and the high beam power puts extreme conditions on any measuring device. With conventional techniques at their operational limit in FLC scenarios, new methods for the detection of the transverse beam size have to be developed. For this laser based techniques are proposed capable of measuring high power beams with sizes in the micrometer range. In this paper general aspects and critical issues of a generic device are outlined and specific solutions proposed. Plans to install a laser wire experiment at an accelerator test facility are presented.

Abstract: During the past five years, there has been an concerted program at SLAC and KEK to develop accelerator structures that meet the high gradient (65 MV/m) performance requirements for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) and Global Linear Collider (GLC) initiatives. The design that resulted is a 60-cm-long, traveling-wave structure with low group velocity and 150 degree per cell phase advance. It has an average iris size that produces an acceptable short-range wakefield, and dipole mode damping and detuning that adequately suppresses the long-range wakefield. More than eight such structures have operated at a 60 Hz repetition rate over 1000 hours at 65 MV/m with 400 ns long pulses, and have reached breakdown rate levels below the limit for the linear collider. Moreover, the structures are robust in that the rates continue to decrease over time, and if the structures are briefly exposed to air, the rates recover to their low levels within a few days. This paper presents a summary of the results from this program, which effectively ended last August with the selection of ‘cold’ technology for an International Linear Collider (ILC).

49. Pulse to pulse stability issues in the SLC

Abstract: Although the SLC achieved record luminosity in 1994, a major hindrance to further increases is pulse-to-pulse stability of the machine, often referred to as jitter. Raising the intensity of the SLC beams has gained luminosity but the intensity-normalized luminosity has decreased due to additional emittance dilution and to increasing jitter at higher intensities. Precision tuning of the final focus using beam-beam deflection scans is hampered by the pulse-to-pulse variations in both beam position and beam size. These were traced to position, intensity and energy jitter in various subsystems of the collider. Contributions to both the origin and amplification of the jitter have been identified as coming from wakefields in the linac, instabilities in the damping rings, acceptance limitations and feedback performance. The intensity fluctuations from the source can easily be amplified as a result of the SLC configuration of accelerating the two electron and positron bunches in the same linac.

50. The Next Linear Collider machine protection system

Abstract: The Next Linear Collider (NLC) electron and positron beams are capable of damaging the linac accelerating structure and beamline vacuum chambers during an individual aberrant accelerator pulse. Machine protection system (MPS) considerations, outlined in this paper for the 1 TeV NLC design, have an impact on the engineering and design of most machine components downstream of the damping ring injector complex. The MPS consists of two functional levels. The first level provides a benign, single bunch, low intensity, high emittance pilot beam that will be used for commissioning and also whenever the integrity or the settings of the downstream components are in doubt. This level also provides for the smooth transition back and forth between high power operation and the benign diagnostic pilot bunch operation. The pilot bunch parameters in the main linac are estimated on the basis of the expected stress in the accelerator structure copper. Beam tests have been done at the SLAC linac to examine the behavior of the copper at the damage stress threshold. Typical pilot beam parameters (compared with nominal) are: 10 times reduced intensity, 10 times increased horizontal emittance and 1000 times increased vertical emittance, resulting in a reduction in charge density of 10/sup 5/. The second level is the primary protection against a single aberrant pulse. Its goal is to reduce the possibility that a substantial transverse field changes the trajectory of the high power beam from one pulse to the next. All devices that could produce such a field are (1) monitored by a fast response network and where possible have (2) deliberately slowed response times. A 'maximum allowable interpulse difference' is evaluated for each such device as well as the beam trajectory monitors in each interpulse period.
