The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is a mission chosen in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 20152025 program of the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate of the European Space Agency. The Sub-millimeter Wave Instrument (SWI) is a spectrometer/radiometer instrument operating in two Sub-millimeter channels between 530 – 625 GHz and 1080 – 1275 GHz to study the dynamics of Jupiter’s stratosphere, vertical profiles of wind speed, temperature, composition and structure of exospheres of Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. LERMA is responsible for the delivery of critical sub-systems of the two channel frontends, including its 1200GHz mixer and last frequency stage local oscillator. In this paper will describe the SWI radiometer front-end system and address the different procurement steps of the flight hardware. We will present some of the test structures used, the tests conditions as well as some of the failure criterias and allowable drifts.

International audience; An investigation of the capabilities and science goals of a submillimeter-wave heterodyne sounder onboard a Titan orbiter is presented. Based on a model of Titan's submillimeter spectrum, and including realistic instrumental performances, we show that passive limb observations of Titan's submillimeter radiation would bring novel and unique information on the dynamical and chemical state of Titan's atmosphere, particularly in the so far poorly probed 500-900 km region. The 300-360, 540-660 and 1080-1280 GHz spectral ranges appear especially promising, and could be explored with an instrument equipped with a tunable local oscillator system. Vertical temperature profiles can be determined up to ˜1200 km using rotational lines of CH 4, CO, and HCN. Winds can be measured over the 200-1200 km altitude range with an accuracy of 3-5 m/s from Doppler shift measurements of any strong optically thin line. Numerous molecular species are accessible, including H 2O, NH 3, CH 3C 2H, CH 2NH, and several nitriles (HC 3N, HC 5N, CH 3CN, and C 2H 3CN). Many of them are expected to be detectable in a large fraction of the atmosphere and in some cases at all levels, providing an observational link between stratospheric and thermospheric chemistry. Isotopic variants of some of these species can also be measured, providing new measurements of H, C, N, and O isotopic ratios. Mapping of the thermal, wind, and composition fields, best achieved from a polar orbit and with an articulated antenna, would provide a new view of the couplings between chemistry and dynamics over an extended altitude range of Titan's atmosphere. Additional science goals at Saturn and Enceladus are briefly discussed.

The Submillimetre-Wave Instrument (SWI) is a passive microwave spectrometer included in the large-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE). It will spend at least three years making detailed observations of the molecular spectral signature of the atmospheres of the giant gaseous planet Jupiter and three of its largest moons, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. The Submillimeter Wave instrument consists in a 600 GHz radiometer that involves compact, non-cryogenic Schottky diodes based solid-state devices for the mixer and last stage local oscillator frequency multipliers. LERMA-LPN is in charge of the SWI local oscillator 280 GHz last stage frequency doubler. In this article we report on recent progress of LERMA-LPN Schottky diode process for the 310–360 GHz prototype circuit that is proposed during the first phase of the program. It is fully based on e-beam lithography for the highest precision of small features, like the anodes and the air-bridges. This multiplier features 4 anodes in a balanced configuration monolithically integrated on a 5μm-thick GaAs membrane circuit connected to a split waveguide-block by metallic beam-leads. The circuit has been mounted in a split block with techniques that will facilitate space qualification. A conversion efficiency of about 15–22% has been measured in the 310–360 GHz band, in very good agreement with simulations. A lifetime test over more than 1600 hours of continuous RF operations with 45 mW of input power has been successfully recorded at LERMA. The design, fabrication process and measurement of the LERMA-LPN 310–360 GHz frequency doubler will be presented at the conference.

International audience; Superconducting Hot Electron Bolometer mixers offer the highest sensitivity for heterodyne detections at frequencies above 1 THz. Important efforts have been made these recent years to further increase the HEB mixers' sensitivity and working frequency and also to design multi-pixel configuration. We present in this paper the developments of a non-standard quasi-optical membrane based HEB mixer where the commonly used focusing element, the silicon lens, is replaced by a micro-mirror and a membrane-based back-short. This configuration offers many advantages: easier processing for circuits at very high frequencies, better noise temperature brought by lower RF coupling loss and higher gain of the antenna. This design is also considered very attractive for multi-pixel receivers. The devices are made of phonon-cooled NbN HEB mixers processed on 1.4 mum thick stress-less Si3N4/Si02 membrane. Quasi-optical designs have been made for frequencies at 600 GHz and 2.5 THz. The design and the device fabrication process will be discussed and both DC and RF measurements at 600 GHz will be presented.

We report the first detection of chloronium, H$_2$Cl$^+$, in the interstellar medium, using the HIFI instrument aboard the \emph{Herschel} Space Observatory. The $2_{12}-1_{01}$ lines of ortho-H$_2^{35}$Cl$^+$ and ortho-H$_2^{37}$Cl$^+$ are detected in absorption towards NGC~6334I, and the $1_{11}-0_{00}$ transition of para-H$_2^{35}$Cl$^+$ is detected in absorption towards NGC~6334I and Sgr~B2(S). The H$_2$Cl$^+$ column densities are compared to those of the chemically-related species HCl. The derived HCl/H$_2$Cl$^+$ column density ratios, $\sim$1--10, are within the range predicted by models of diffuse and dense Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs). However, the observed H$_2$Cl$^+$ column densities, in excess of $10^{13}$~cm$^{-2}$, are significantly higher than the model predictions. Our observations demonstrate the outstanding spectroscopic capabilities of HIFI for detecting new interstellar molecules and providing key constraints for astrochemical models., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, HIFI Special Issue; 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

We report on the first direct detection of submillimeter waves emitted by small parallel tunnel junction arrays. The arrays made up of 10 and 20 Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb junctions of 6 µm2 is integrated and coupled in RF to Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb twin junction-based detector by a microstrip/slotline transition. The detector's I-V curve exhibits clearly photonassisted steps when the array is biased on the corresponding Josephson resonance at 390 and 480 GHz. These results are of particular significance in the light of previous work done on this type of devices. The arrays are specially suited for applications such as clock for RSFQ electronics or as local oscillator for THz superconducting integrated receivers.

International audience; Aims: This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) that was launched onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory in May 2009. Methods: The instrument is a set of 7 heterodyne receivers that are electronically tuneable, covering 480-1250 GHz with SIS mixers and the 1410-1910 GHz range with hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers. The local oscillator (LO) subsystem comprises a Ka-band synthesizer followed by 14 chains of frequency multipliers and 2 chains for each frequency band. A pair of auto-correlators and a pair of acousto-optical spectrometers process the two IF signals from the dual-polarization, single-pixel front-ends to provide instantaneous frequency coverage of 2 × 4 GHz, with a set of resolutions (125 kHz to 1 MHz) that are better than 0.1 km s-1. Results: After a successful qualification and a pre-launch TB/TV test program, the flight instrument is now in-orbit and completed successfully the commissioning and performance verification phase. The in-orbit performance of the receivers matches the pre-launch sensitivities. We also report on the in-orbit performance of the receivers and some first results of HIFI's operations. Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA.

Despite the low elemental deuterium abundance in the Galaxy, enhanced molecular D/H ratios have been found in the environments of low-mass star forming regions, and in particular the Class 0 protostar IRAS 16293-2422. The CHESS (Chemical HErschel Surveys of Star forming regions) Key Program aims at studying the molecular complexity of the interstellar medium. The high sensitivity and spectral resolution of the HIFI instrument provide a unique opportunity to observe the fundamental 1,1,1 - 0,0,0 transition of the ortho-D2O molecule, inaccessible from the ground, and to determine the ortho-to-para D2O ratio. We have detected the fundamental transition of the ortho-D2O molecule at 607.35 GHz towards IRAS 16293-2422. The line is seen in absorption with a line opacity of 0.62 +/- 0.11 (1 sigma). From the previous ground-based observations of the fundamental 1,1,0 - 1,0,1 transition of para-D2O seen in absorption at 316.80 GHz we estimate a line opacity of 0.26 +/- 0.05 (1 sigma). We show that the observed absorption is caused by the cold gas in the envelope of the protostar. Using these new observations, we estimate for the first time the ortho to para D2O ratio to be lower than 2.6 at a 3 sigma level of uncertainty, to be compared with the thermal equilibrium value of 2:1., 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted the A&A HIFI Special Issue as a letter

We have observed CH absorption lines ($J=3/2, N=1 \leftarrow J=1/2, N=1$) against the continuum source Sgr~B2(M) using the \textit{Herschel}/HIFI instrument. With the high spectral resolution and wide velocity coverage provided by HIFI, 31 CH absorption features with different radial velocities and line widths are detected and identified. The narrower line width and lower column density clouds show `spiral arm' cloud characteristics, while the absorption component with the broadest line width and highest column density corresponds to the gas from the Sgr~B2 envelope. The observations show that each `spiral arm' harbors multiple velocity components, indicating that the clouds are not uniform and that they have internal structure. This line-of-sight through almost the entire Galaxy offers unique possibilities to study the basic chemistry of simple molecules in diffuse clouds, as a variety of different cloud classes are sampled simultaneously. We find that the linear relationship between CH and H$_2$ column densities found at lower $A_V$ by UV observations does not continue into the range of higher visual extinction. There, the curve flattens, which probably means that CH is depleted in the denser cores of these clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, HIFI Special Issue

The European Space Agency Rosetta Spacecraft, launched on March 2, 2004 toward Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, carries a relatively small and lightweight millimeter-submillimeter spectrometer instrument, the first of its kind launched into deep space. The instrument will be used to study the evolution of outgassing water and other molecules from the target comet as a function of heliocentric distance. During flybys of the asteroids (2867) Steins and (21) Lutetia in 2008 and 2010 respectively, the instrument will measure thermal emission and search for water vapor in the vicinity of these asteroids. The instrument, named MIRO (Microwave Instrument for the Rosetta Orbiter), consists of a 30-cm diameter, offset parabolic reflector telescope followed by two heterodyne receivers. Center-band operating frequencies of the receivers are near 190 GHz (1.6 mm) and 562 GHz (0.5 mm). Broadband continuum channels are implemented in both frequency bands for the measurement of near surface temperatures and temperature gradients in Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and the asteroids (2867) Steins and (21) Lutetia. A 4096 channel CTS (Chirp Transform Spectrometer) spectrometer having 180 MHz total bandwidth and 44 kHz resolution is, in addition to the continuum channel, connected to the submillimeter receiver. The submillimeter radiometer/spectrometer is fixed tuned to measure four volatile species – CO, CH3OH, NH3 and three, oxygen-related isotopologues of water, H2 16O, H2 17O and H2 18O. The basic quantities measured with the MIRO instrument are surface temperature, gas production rates and relative abundances, and velocity and excitation temperature of each species, along with their spatial and temporal variability. This paper provides a short discussion of the scientific objectives of the investigation, and a detailed discussion of the MIRO instrument system.

We report on the status of the development of a 30% bandwidth tunerless SIS double-sideband mixer for the “Band 1” (480 GHz-630 GHz) channel of the heterodyne instrument (HIFI) of ESA’s Herschel Space Observatory, scheduled for launch in 2007. After exposing the main features of our mixer design, we present the performance achieved by the demonstration mixer, measured via Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and heterodyne Y factor calibrations. We infer from a preliminary mixer analysis that the mixer has very low, quantum-limited noise and low conversion loss. We also report on some pre-qualification tests, as we currently start to manufacture the qualification models and design the last iteration of masks for SIS junction production.

International audience; An original method of shape optimization has been developed to improve high-power high-frequency transmission lines' performances. This method is based on the coupling coefficients equations, for which general expressions are given. It makes use of numerical methods such as steepest descent associated to adjoint state technique. The results obtained on several types of components demonstrate the pertinence of this method

We present the first high spectral resolution observations of Orion KL in the frequency ranges 1573.4 - 1702.8 GHz (band 6b) and 1788.4 - 1906.8 GHz (band 7b) obtained using the HIFI instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory. We characterize the main emission lines found in the spectrum, which primarily arise from a range of components associated with Orion KL including the hot core, but also see widespread emission from components associated with molecular outflows traced by H2O, SO2, and OH. We find that the density of observed emission lines is significantly diminished in these bands compared to lower frequency Herschel/HIFI bands., Accepted for publication in the Herschel HIFI special issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, 5 pages, 3 figures
