Abstract: Jet production properties at s = 540 GeV have been measured in the UA2 detector at the CERN pp Collider. Results on the total transverse momentum of the jet system, on the parton density in the nucleon (structure function) and on the two-jet angular distributions are reported. The data are compared with QCD predictions and extrapolations from lower energy experiments. © 1984.

Abstract: Fragmentation properties of a sample of two-jet events measured by the UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider are described. The energy flow is compared with different model predictions. The charged particle multiplicity in jets is found to exceed extrapolations from lower energy e+e− jet data.

Abstract: A search for the decay K S → π 0 γγ has been made using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using data collected in 1999 during a 40-hour run with a high-intensity K S beam, an upper limit for the branching ratio BR ( K S → π 0 γγ , z ⩾0.2) −7 has been obtained at 90% confidence level, where z = m γγ 2 / m K 0 2 .

Abstract: The semi-leptonic decay of the neutral K meson $K^{0}_{L} \to \pi^{\pm}e^{\mp}\nu (K_{e3})$, was used to study the strangeness-changing weak interaction of hadrons. A sample of 5.6 million reconstructed events recorded by the NA48 experiment was used to measure the Dalitz plot density. Admitting all possible Lorentz-covariant couplings, the form factors for vector $(f_{+}(q^{2}))$, scalar $(f_{S})$ and tensor $(f_{T})$ interactions were measured. The linear slope of the vector form factor $\lambda_{+} = 0.0284 \pm 0.0007 \pm 0.0013$ and values for the ratios $|f_{S}/f_{+}(0)|=0.015^{+0.007}_{-0.010} \pm 0.012$ and $|f_{T}/f_{+}(0)|=0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.04} \pm 0.03$ were obtained. The values for $f_{S}$ and for $f_{T}$ are consistent with zero. Assuming only vector-axial vector couplings, $\lambda_{+} = 0.02888 \pm 0.0004 \pm 0.0011$ and a good fit consistent with pure V-A couplings were obtained. Alternatively a fit to a dipole form factor yields a pole mass of $M = 859 \pm 18$ MeV, consistent with the $K^{*}(892)$ mass. Abstract: In a preliminary version of the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS, in which an iron-scintillator sandwich calorimeter was used as a photon detector, the ratio of K L → πμνγ and K L → πμν decays was measured. The branching ratio BR(K L →πμνγ, E γ ∗ ≥30 MeV )/(K L → πμν ) is found to be (2.08±0.17 +0.16 −0.21 )×10 −3 , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: This Letter reports on a new high precision measurement of the form factors of the K L → π ± μ ∓ ν μ decay. The data sample of about 2.3 × 10 6 events was recorded in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. Studying the Dalitz plot density we measured a linear, λ + ′ = ( 20.5 ± 2.2 stat ± 2.4 syst ) × 10 −3 , and a quadratic, λ + ″ = ( 2.6 ± 0.9 stat ± 1.0 syst ) × 10 −3 term in the power expansion of the vector form factor. No evidence was found for a second order term for the scalar form factor; the linear slope was determined to be λ 0 = ( 9.5 ± 1.1 stat ± 0.8 syst ) × 10 −3 . Using a linear fit our results were: λ + = ( 26.7 ± 0.6 stat ± 0.8 syst ) × 10 −3 and λ 0 = ( 11.7 ± 0.7 stat ± 1.0 syst ) × 10 −3 . A pole fit of the form factors yields: m V = ( 905 ± 9 stat ± 17 syst ) MeV / c 2 and m S = ( 1400 ± 46 stat ± 53 syst ) MeV / c 2 .

Abstract: We present a measurement of the ratio of the decay rates Γ ( K L → π + π − ) / Γ ( K L → π ± e ∓ ν ) , denoted as Γ K 2 π / Γ K e 3 . The analysis is based on data taken during a dedicated run in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. Using a sample of 47 000 K 2 π and five million K e 3 decays, we find Γ K 2 π / Γ K e 3 = ( 4.835 ± 0.022 stat . ± 0.016 syst . ) × 10 −3 . From this we derive the branching ratio of the CP violating decay K L → π + π − and the CP violation parameter | η + − | . Excluding the CP conserving direct photon emission component K L → π + π − γ , we obtain the results BR ( K L → π + π − ) = ( 1.941 ± 0.019 ) × 10 −3 and | η + − | = ( 2.223 ± 0.012 ) × 10 −3 .

Abstract: The decay rate of the long-lived neutral K meson into the e + e − e + e − final state has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using data collected in 1998 and 1999, a total of 200 events has been observed with negligible background. This observation corresponds to a branching ratio of Br ( K L → e + e − e + e − ) = ( 3.30 ± 0.24 stat ± 0.23 syst ± 0.10 norm ) × 10 −8 .

Abstract: Using data taken during the year 2000 with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS, a search for the CP violating decay K S → 3 π 0 has been performed. From a fit to the lifetime distribution of about 4.9 million reconstructed K 0 / K ¯ 0 → 3 π 0 decays, the CP violating amplitude η 000 = A ( K S → 3 π 0 ) / A ( K L → 3 π 0 ) has been found to be Re ( η 000 ) = − 0.002 ± 0.011 ± 0.015 and Im ( η 000 ) = − 0.003 ± 0.013 ± 0.017 . This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of Br ( K S → 3 π 0 ) 7.4 × 10 −7 at 90% confidence level. The result is used to improve knowledge of Re ( e ) and the CPT violating quantity Im ( δ ) via the Bell–Steinberger relation.

Abstract: In data taken with the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS in 1999, 730 candidates of the weak radiative hyperon decay Ξ0→Λγ have been found with an estimated background of 58±8 events. From these events the Ξ0→Λγ decay asymmetry has been determined to α(Ξ0→Λγ)=-0.78±0.18stat±0.06 syst, which is the first evidence of a decay asymmetry in Ξ 0→Λγ. The branching fraction of the decay has been measured to be Br(Ξ0→Λγ)=(1.16±0.05 stat±0.06syst)×10-3. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Abstract: Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

Abstract: We present the first observation of the decay KS→π+π−e+e− based upon the data collected in 1998 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. We have identified a clean sample of 56 events with negligible background contamination. Using KL→π+π−π0D decays as normalization sample, the branching ratio is measured to be BR(KS→π+π−e+e−)=[4.5±0.7(stat)±0.4(syst)]×10−5. This result is in good agreement with the theoretical expectations from the mechanism of inner bremsstrahlung.

Abstract: The decay rate of the neutral K meson KL→e+e−γ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 6864 events has been observed with an estimated background of 10 events. The branching ratio is Γ(KL→e+e−γ)/Γ(KL→all) = (1.06±0.02stat±0.02sys±0.04calc)×10−5. The parameter α K ∗ describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay through intermediate pseudoscalar or vector mesons was measured to be α K ∗ =−0.36±0.06stat±0.02sys.

Abstract: A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.

Abstract: The process pp→evγ+X is studied as √s=630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling. We find κ=1+2.6−2.2 and λ=0+1.7−1.8 and their 95% confidence limits −3.5

Abstract: A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb−1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Abstract: The large sample of W→eν events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s . From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M 2 w )=0.123±0.0.18( stat .)±0.017 ( syst .) .

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg /g =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+→τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment has collected large samples of W and Z events during recent runs at the CERN p p Collider at s = 630 GeV . These samples have been used to perform precise measurements of the masses of the W and Z bosons. After a careful analysis of systematic errors, an improved result is obtained for the mass ratio mwmz. This provides a new value for the weak mixing parameter sin2θw. Furthermore, it can be combined with recent measurements of the Z mass from e+e− colliders to give an absolute measurement of the W mass, leading to the result mw=80.49±0.43 (stat) ± 0.24 (syst) GeV.

Abstract: Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e + e − decays. The measured cross sections are σ = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σ = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38 −0.72 +0.82 (stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

Abstract: Using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS, 31 KS → π 0γγ candidates with an estimated background of 13.7 ± 3.2 events have been observed. This first observation leads to a branching ratio of BR(KS → π0γγ) z>0.2 = (4.9 ± 1.6stat ± 0.9 syst) × 10-8 in agreement with Chiral Perturbation Theory predictions. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: A measurement of the cross-sections for single and double prompt photon production in p p interactions at s = 630 GeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 13.2 pb−1. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The signal from double prompt photon production has a statistical significance of 4.3 standard deviations.

Abstract: The process t-H+b, H+ --> tau+nu, tau+ --> hadrons + nuBar and its charge conjugate are investigated by seeking an excess in number of observed theta's beyond that expected from the standard model under the assumption of e-tau-universality. No such excess is found and new regions of the m(H)-m(t) plane are excluded for B(H+ --> tau(nu) = 0.5 and 1.O. In addition, the ratio of couplings of the tau and eto the W is precisely measured as g-tau(W)/g-e(W) = 1.02 +/- 0.04(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.).

Abstract: The W and Z bosons masses, m(W) and m(Z), are measured using samples of W --> ev and Z --> e+e- decays observed in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The ratio is found to be m(W)/m(Z) = 0.8813 +/- 0.0036 +/- 0.0019. This gives a value sin2 theta(w) = 0.2234 +/- 0.0064 +/- 0.0033, and in combination with precise m(Z) measurements from LEP yields m(W) = 80.35 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.17 GeV. This result is in good agreement with other experiments, and with the standard model for a top quark mass lighter than 250 GeV.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays of W and Z bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The large sample of W→ev events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp̄ collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s. From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M W 2) = 0.123 ± 0.0.18 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.).

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of the W decaying to τ and e leptons is measured using {Mathematical expression} collisions at {Mathematical expression} GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to the W is then determined to be g τ W/g e W=0.997±0.0 56 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay mode Z→τ +→τ + is observed and also found to be consistent with e-τ universality. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: A value of (-6.1 +- 0.9_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst})*10^{-3} is obtained for the quadratic slope parameter h in the K_L -> 3\pi^0 decay Dalitz plot at the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. The result is based on 14.7*10^6 fully reconstructed K_L -> 3\pi^0 -> 6\gamma decays. Abstract: A search for supersymmetric decays of the Z boson into a pair of scalar electrons or winos (partners of the electron and W boson) has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p collider at s = 630 GeV . The analysis of the sample of electron pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb −1 , shows no evidence for such exotic decays. The 90% confidence level lower mass limits obtained exclude selectron masses up to e40 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light photino, and wino masses up to 45 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light scalar neutrino.

Abstract: A search has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at s =630 GeV for multi-jet events with large transverse momentum imbalance in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb−1. Under the assumption that the photino is the lightest stable supersymmetric (SUSY) particle, the data have been used to deduce lower limits in a minimal SUSY model for the squark ( m q ) and the gluino ( m g ) masses. The 90% CL bounds are m g > 74 GeV independent of m g , m g > 79 GeV independent of m g , and and m> 106 GeV for m q =m q =m .

Abstract: The transverse momentum distributions of W and Z bosons produced in {Mathematical expression} collisions at {Mathematical expression} are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction of W bosons produced with pT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)-1.3+0.9(syst)%. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The upgraded UA 2 detector has collected data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 7.5 pb−1 from$\bar pp$ collisions at a centre of mass energy of 630 GeV during 1988 and 1989. A search has been performed for the production and decay of the top quark (t) or a member of a hypothetical fourth family (b′). No evidence has been found for such processes. Using the expected rates for production and decay branching ratios from the Standard Model, this implies that the top quark mass is greater than 69(71) GeV/c2, and that theb′ mass is greater than 54(57) GeV/c2, at 95(90)% confidence.

Abstract: The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

Abstract: A measurement of the direct production of photons with high transverse momentum from$\bar pp$ collisions at$\sqrt s = 630$ GeV is presented. The structure of events containing a high transverse momentum photon is studied. The results support predictions from QCD theory.

Abstract: From an integrated luminosity of ∫ L d t = 116 nb -1 , 10events are found which contain an electron pair of mass in the range 12 ee GeV c 2 and electron transverse momenta p T e > 5 GeV c . Abstract: Using a sample of events collected by UA2 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 116 nb −1 . we have searched for electron-“neutrino” pairs in which the transverse momenta of the electron and of the “neutrino” exceed 15 GeV/c and 25 GeV/c respectively. A total of 35 events are observed in low background conditions. Most events can be interpreted in terms of W ± production from QCD processes. Events in which the observation of hard jets makes this interpretation unlikely are described in detail. Possible sources of background contamination are considered.

Abstract: The distribution of total tranverse energy ΣET over the pseudorapidity interval −1 < η < 1 and an azimuthal range Δφ=300° has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider (s = 540 GeV) using a highly segmented total absorption caloriter. In the events with very large ΣET (ΣET⪆60 GeV) most of the transverse energy is found to be contained in small angular regions as expected for high transverse momentum hadron jets. We discuss the properties of a sample of two-jet events with invariant two-jet masses up to 140 GeVc2 and we measure the cross section for inclusive jet production in the range of jet transverse momenta between 15 and 60 GeVc.

Abstract: Transverse momentum distributions of pions, kaons and protons have been measured around 90° in the UA2 detector at the SPS p p collider, at a CM energy of 540 GeV. All the cross sections have increased by more than a factor of 2 over those measured at ISR energies and exhibit a flatter behaviour with respect to transverse momentum.

Abstract: The charged hyperon beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) has been used to collect data on semileptonic decays of Σ−, Ξ−, and Λ. In this article we report results on the$\sum \to ne\bar v$ decay mode. A magnetic channel selected 100 GeV/c (130 GeV/c) negatively charged particles produced in the forward direction by interaction of the 210 GeV/c (240 GeV/c) SPS proton beam on a BeO target. The Σ− hyperons were identified in a DISC Cerenkov counter, and the negatively charged decay particle was analysed by a magnetic spectrometer. The neutron direction was obtained from the Σ− decay vertex and from the impact point measured in a neutron detector. Electron-hadron discrimination was achieved by the combined use of lead-glass and transition radiation detectors. The$\sum \to ne\bar v$ branching ratio measurement gave a value of (0.96±0.05) ×10−3. Measurements of the centre-of-mass distributions (baryon kinetic energy, electron-antineutrino correlation, and Dalitz plot distributions) yield the axial-vector to vector form factor ratio |g1/f1|=0.34 ±0.05. From the study of the electron momentum spectrum, the negative sign ofg1/f1, which is expected within the Cabibbo theory framework, is favoured by at least 2.6 standard deviations. The effects ofq2-dependence off1 andg1 and of radiative corrections, the measurement of the weak magnetism form factorf2, and the effect of possible second-class current terms are discussed. Results on the other Ξ−, Σ−, and Λ semileptonic decays are reported in separate articles.
