Abstract

We report on a search for right-handed W bosons (W R ) with mass greater than 200GeV/c 2 . We used data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider at √s=1.8TeV to search for W R decays into an electron and a massive right-handed neutrino W R ± >e ± N R . Using the inclusive electron data, we set mass limits independent of the N R decay: m W R >650GeV/c 2 and m W R >720GeV/c 2 at the 95% confidence level, valid for m N R W R and mN R «m W R , respectively. The latter also represents a new lower limit on the mass of a heavy left-handed W boson (W') decaying into ev. In addition, limits on mWR valid for larger values of the N R mass are obtained assuming that NR decays to an electron and two jets.

Abstract

First experimental results are presented from a search for events with a rapidity gap between jets. The D0 detector was used to examine events produced by the Fermilab Tevatron [ital p[bar p]] collider at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV. The fraction of events with an observed rapidity gap between the two highest transverse energy ([ital E][sub [ital T]]) jets is measured as a function of the pseudorapidity separation between the jet edges ([Delta][eta][sub [ital c]]). An upper limit at the 95% confidence level of 1.1[times]10[sup [minus]2] is obtained on the fraction of events with non particles between the jets, for events with [Delta][eta][sub [ital c]][gt]3 and jet [ital E][sub [ital T]] greater than 30 GeV.

Abstract

We have searched for evidence of top quark production in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. For an integrated luminosity of 15 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, we report results of a search for tt\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} pairs in the decay modes tt\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\mu}+jets,ee+jets,e+jets, and \ensuremath{\mu}+jets. From analyses of these modes we obtain a lower limit on the top quark mass of 131 GeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ at the 95% confidence level, assuming standard model branching fractions and a predicted cross section for tt\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} production. We discuss the properties of an event for which expected backgrounds are small.

Abstract

The results of a search for W boson pair production in pp collisions at √s=1.8TeV with subsequent decay to eμ, ee, and μμ channels are presented. Five candidate events are observed with an expected background of 3.1±0.4 events for an integrated luminosity of approximately 97pb -1 . Limits on the anomalous couplings are obtained from a maximum likelihood fit of the E T spectra of the leptons in the candidate events. Assuming identical WWγ and WWZ couplings, the 95% C.L. limits are -0.62

Abstract

This study reports the first measurement of the azimuthal decorrelation between jets with pseudorapidity separation up to five units. The data were accumulated using the D{\O}detector during the 1992--1993 collider run of the Fermilab Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}=$ 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to next--to--leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading--log approximations (LLA) where the leading--log terms are resummed to all orders in $\alpha_{\scriptscriptstyle S}$. The final state jets as predicted by NLO QCD show less azimuthal decorrelation than the data. The parton showering LLA Monte Carlo {\small HERWIG} describes the data well; an analytical LLA prediction based on BFKL resummation shows more decorrelation than the data., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures, all uuencoded and gzipped

Abstract

The DO collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in pbar-p collisions at Sqrt(s)=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50pb-1. We have searched for t-tbar production in the dilepton and single-lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b-quark jets. We observed 17 events with an expected background of 3.8+/-0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2.0E-6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 199^+19_21 (stat.)+/- 22 (syst.)GeV/c**2 and its production cross section to be 6.4 +/- 2.2 pb., Comment: postscript available at http://fnnews.fnal.gov/top_paper_dzero.ps, for further info see http://fnnews.fnal.gov/top_discovery.html
