Abstract: The production of Σ0 baryons in the nuclear reaction p (3.5 GeV) + Nb (corresponding to sNN=3.18 GeV) is studied with the detector set-up HADES at GSI, Darmstadt. Σ0s were identified via the decay Σ0→Λγ with subsequent decays Λ→pπ− in coincidence with a e+e− pair from either external (γ→e+e−) or internal (Dalitz decay γ⁎→e+e−) gamma conversions. Abstract: The tagged quasi-free np→npπ+π− reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon (s∼2.42 GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions of solid statistics for π+π− production in np collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the np→npπ+π− reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the t-channel with ΔΔ contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the π+π− invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass M∼2.38 GeV and with width Γ∼70 MeV.

Abstract: Employing the Bonn–Gatchina partial wave analysis framework (PWA), we have analyzed HADES data of the reaction p(3.5 GeV)+p→pK+Λ. This reaction might contain information about the kaonic cluster “ppK−” (with quantum numbers JP=0− and total isospin I=1/2) via its decay into pΛ. Due to interference effects in our coherent description of the data, a hypothetical K‾NN (or, specifically “ppK−”) cluster signal need not necessarily show up as a pronounced feature (e.g. a peak) in an invariant mass spectrum like pΛ. Our PWA analysis includes a variety of resonant and non-resonant intermediate states and delivers a good description of our data (various angular distributions and two-hadron invariant mass spectra) without a contribution of a K‾NN cluster. At a confidence level of CLs=95% such a cluster cannot contribute more than 2–12% to the total cross section with a pK+Λ final state, which translates into a production cross-section between 0.7 μb and 4.2 μb, respectively. Abstract: While swimming represents a popular recreational activity, the immersion of the human body into the water requires a complex physiologic adaption of the whole cardiopulmonary and circulatory system. While this sport is regarded as beneficial, especially in cardiovascular patients, current guidelines hypothesized a possible hazardous effect of swimming and especially diving in patients with univentricular hearts after Fontan palliation. Yet, actual data to underline or contradict these assumptions are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a first feasibility study for the evaluation of these effects on Fontan physiology and elucidate the gap of evidence currently preventing patients after Fontan palliation from being restricted from swimming or diving on doctoral advice. Patients recruited from the Heart Center Leipzig, Department of pediatric cardiology, underwent spiroergometry treadmill testing followed by a spiroergometry swimming stress test in a counter current pool. Physiologic data were recorded. A short apnea diving test was performed. The current study found similar physiologic reactions comparing treadmill and swimming exercise stress testing. Heart rate response and oxygen uptake were comparable on land and in the water. This study presents the first-in-man data on swimming and diving in Fontan patients. In this small study cohort of three Fontan patients, there were no adverse events triggered by swimming and breath-hold diving seen. Basically, the physiologic response to exercise was comparable on land and in the water.

Abstract: International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract: The reaction p ( @ 3.5 GeV ) + p → p + Λ + K + can be studied to search for the existence of kaonic bound states like p p K − leading to this final state. This effort has been motivated by the assumption that in p + p collisions the Λ ( 1405 ) resonance can act as a doorway to the formation of the kaonic bound states. The status of this analysis within the HADES Collaboration, with particular emphasis on the comparison to simulations, is shown in this work and the deviation method utilized by the DISTO Collaboration in a similar analysis is discussed. The outcome suggests the employment of a partial wave analysis do disentangle the different contributions to the measured p K + Λ final state.

Abstract: We show how the high charged-particle flux (1–20 kHz/cm 2 ) expected over the 150 m 2 large time-of-flight wall of the future Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment (CBM) at FAIR can be realistically handled with Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs). This crucial 100-fold increase of the chamber rate capability, as compared to that of standard MRPCs presently employed in experiments resorting to sub-100 ps timing, has been achieved thanks to the development of a new type of low-resistive doped glass. Following the encouraging results previously obtained with small counters, two types of modules (active area: ∼150 cm 2 ) have been built at Tsinghua University with the new material. The measurements conveyed in this work, obtained with a quasi- minimum ionizing electron beam ( γβ ≥3), prove their suitability as the building blocks of the present hadron-identification concept of the CBM experiment. Namely, they provide a time resolution better than 80 ps and an efficiency above 90% at a particle flux well in excess of 20 kHz/cm 2 (up to 35–60 kHz/cm 2 ), being at the core of a modular concept that is easily scalable. Recent measurements of the electrical and mechanical properties of this new material, together with its long-term behavior, are shortly summarized.

Abstract: We study the production of Σ ± π ∓ p K + particle quartets in p + p reactions at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy. The data were taken with the HADES experiment at GSI. This report evaluates the contribution of resonances like Λ ( 1405 ) , Σ ( 1385 ) 0 , Λ ( 1520 ) , Δ ( 1232 ) , N ⁎ and K ⁎ 0 to the Σ ± π ∓ p K + final state. The resulting simulation model is compared to the experimental data in several angular distributions and it shows itself as suitable to evaluate the acceptance corrections properly.

Abstract: We present an analysis of the hyperons Λ(1405) and Σ(1385) + for p+p reactions at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy. The data were taken with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES). A Λ(1405) signal could be reconstructed in both charged decay channels Λ(1405)→Σ± π ∓ . The obtained statistics of the Σ(1385) + signal allows also differential studies.

Abstract: A resistive plate counter for timing purposes in the high-rate environment of the Compressed Baryonic Matter Experiment has been developed at the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The detector electrodes are made of a ceramics composite. Detector tests have been performed with minimum ionizing single electrons, delivered by the electron accelerator ELBE with a time accuracy of few picoseconds. The ceramics RPC shows an all-time high-rate capability for electron fluxes up to 2.7 × 10 5 s − 1 cm − 2 .

Abstract: The emission of e+ e- pairs from C + C collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon has been investigated. The measured production probabilities, spanning from the π0-Dalitz to the ρ / ω invariant-mass region, display a strong excess above the cocktail of standard hadronic sources. The bombarding-energy dependence of this excess is found to scale like pion production, rather than like eta production. The data are in good agreement with results obtained in the former DLS experiment. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We present results on the K∗(892)+ production in proton-proton collisions at a beam energy of E=3.5 GeV, which is hitherto the lowest energy at which this mesonic resonance has been observed in nucleon-nucleon reactions. The data are interpreted within a two-channel model that includes the three-body production of K∗(892)+ associated with the Λ or Σ hyperon. The relative contributions of both channels are estimated. Besides the total cross section σ(p+p→K∗(892)++X)=9.5±0.9-0.9+1.1±0.7μb, which adds a new data point to the excitation function of the K∗(892)+ production in the region of low excess energy, transverse momenta and angular spectra are extracted and compared with the predictions of the two-channel model. The spin characteristics of K∗(892)+ are discussed as well in terms of the spin-alignment.

Abstract: Results on the production of the double strange cascade hyperon Ξ^{-} are reported for collisions of p(3.5 GeV)+Nb, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy-Ion Research, Darmstadt. For the first time, subthreshold Ξ^{-} production is observed in proton-nucleus interactions. Assuming a Ξ^{-} phase-space distribution similar to that of Λ hyperons, the production probability amounts to P_{Ξ^{-}}=[2.0±0.4(stat)±0.3(norm)±0.6(syst)]×10^{-4} resulting in a Ξ^{-}/(Λ+Σ^{0}) ratio of P_{Ξ^{-}}/P_{Λ+Σ^{0}}=[1.2±0.3(stat)±0.4(syst)]×10^{-2}. Available model predictions are significantly lower than the measured Ξ^{-} yield.

Abstract: The High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer HADES has been recently commissioned at GSI, Darmstadt. It has been designed for systematic studies of hadron properties inside nuclear matter. We report first preliminary results on invariant masses e + e - -pairs which were measured in 12 C + 12 C collisions at E kin = 2 GeV ⋅ A . The analysis methods are briefly outlined and a comparison with detailed Monte-Carlo simulations is shown.

Abstract: The High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) is a detector arrangement combined with a superconducting toroid for lepton pair spectroscopy presently built up at GSI (Darmstadt). HADES is designed to cope with the high-multiplicity environment of heavy ion collisions at 1AGeV and intensities of up to 108 beam particles per second and central event rates of 105 s-1. The detector has a geometrical acceptance of almost 50% for e+e- pairs and a mass resolution of 0.8% for ρ and ω mesons. Four low-mass drift chamber systems, two before and two behind the magnet, serve for charged particle track reconstruction. Design aspects of the drift chambers and first results from beam tests are presented.

Abstract: An exclusive analysis of the four-body final states Λ+p+π++K0 and Σ0+p+π++K0 measured with HADES for p+p collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 3.5 GeV is presented. The analysis uses various phase space variables, such as missing mass and invariant mass distributions, in the four-particle event selection (p,π+,π+,π-) to find cross sections of the different production channels, contributions of the intermediate resonances Δ++ and Σ(1385)+, and corresponding angular distributions. A dominant resonant production is seen, where the reaction Λ+Δ+++K0 has a cross section about ten times higher (29.45±0.08-1.46+1.67±2.06μb) than the analogous nonresonant reaction (2.57±0.02-1.98+0.21±0.18μb). A similar result is obtained in the corresponding Σ0 channels with 9.26±0.05-0.31+1.41±0.65μb in the resonant and 1.35±0.02-1.35+0.10±0.09μb in the nonresonant reactions. © 2014 American Physical Society.

27. Precision measurement of Timing RPC gas mixtures with laser-beam induced electrons

Abstract: The main goals of a new test facility at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf are precision measurements of the electron drift velocity and the Townsend coefficient of gases at atmospheric pressure in the strongest ever used homogenous electrical fields and the search for new RPC gas mixtures to substitute the climate harmful Freon. Picosecond UV laser pulses in the UV were focused into a sub-millimeter gas gap to initialize a defined tiny charge. These gaps are formed by electrodes of low-resistive ceramics or high-resistive float glass. The charge multiplication occurs in a strong homogeneous electric field of up to 100\,kV/cm. Electron-ion pairs were generated in a cylindrical micro-volume by multi-photon ionization. The laser-pulse repetition rate ranges from 1\,Hz to a few kHz. The RPC time resolution has been measured for different gases. First results of the Townsend coefficient at 100\,kV/cm show a strong disagreement between the present measurement and Magboltz simulations for the typical Timing RPC gas mixture C2F4H2/SF6/i-C4H{10}, while the measured electron drift velocities are in a good agreement with the model predictions.

Abstract: Silicon pixel sensors for the ATLAS Pixel Detector have been successfully developed. The main attention for the design was given to survivability in the harsh radiation environment of LHC up to a fluence of 10 15 n eq /cm 2 during 10 years of operation. This leads to the need of long term operation at several hundreds of volts, partially depleted while maintaining good charge collection, small cell size and thin sensors reducing the multiple scattering. Additionally, a bias grid for testing the sensors before assembly under realistic bias conditions is implemented to allow a quality assurance.

Abstract: In future high-energy physics experiments silicon detectors with a high spatial resolution will be used for tracking close to the interaction point. Besides crystal damage, the surface damage caused by ionizing irradiation is very important for the long-term performance of these devices. Therefore, systematic characterization of surface effects is necessary. For these investigations we designed a test field consistent of MOS structures and gate-controlled diodes to be produced with different vendors. A new gate-controlled diode with different current and capacitance measurement options will be introduced and first results of parameters evaluated on the unirradiated device as well as after irradiation with low energetic electrons, neutrons and charged hadrons will be presented. The gate-controlled diode with new features has been shown to be a powerful tool to investigate the oxide and interface quality before and after irradiation.

Abstract: The inner detectors of LHC experiments will contain pixel detectors covering an area of several square meters. In addition they are facing the harsh radiation environment of the LHC. A first prototype sensor has been designed according to the requirements of the ATLAS experiment, produced and successfully tested with static measurements. Irradiation tests have also been performed with excellent results. The sensor is an n + n-device in order to allow partial depleted operation after bulk inversion and a guard ring scheme keeping the entire detector surface close to the electronic chip on ground potential. Further, a bias structure is introduced providing testability of the sensors prior to bump bonding and flip chipping.

31. Influence of surface damage on highly segmented silicon detectors

Abstract: Highly segmented silicon detectors have already been used in high-energy physicsexperimentsfor a long time. But in future experimentsthey will have to survive for several years in harsh radiation environments. Their performance will degenerate due to irradiation-induced bulk and surface damage. Whereas bulk damage is design independent and has been successfully under investigation for a long time now, the design-related surface damage and its consequences for a highly segmented detector are not well known yet. Therefore, we have developed a test device and irradiated it systematically with low-energy electrons. FromI-V curves before and after irradiation we have determined the influence of surface damage on the leakage current of single-pixel cells. As a main result it was found that, depending on the design, only a fraction of the surface area contributes to the interface generation current after surface damage.

Abstract: ATLAS Technical Proposal, CERN/LHCC/94-43 has adopted n-side read out single-sided detectors as the baseline technology for the silicon microstrips due to the anticipated radiation tolerance of such a design ATLAS Inner Detector Technical Design Report, CERN/LHCC/97-17. This results from the reasonable efficiencies anticipated for charge collection, even when the detectors are run well below the final depletion voltage. Full-sized prototypes 64×63.6 mm 2 detectors have been produced with a range of manufacturers to a common specification and shown to work well in test-beam with ATLAS electronics. A selection of detectors was also scanned in the CERN PS beam for runs of two weeks giving an integrated dose over the full surface of 2×10 14 p/cm 2 . This dose corresponds to the highest charged hadron fluence expected in 10 yr of operation in ATLAS. Results are presented on these detectors both from parametric measurements and from studies using analogue LHC speed electronics. The detectors are shown to remain fully operational after these doses and to yield high signal/noise for read-out of 12 cm strip length. The performance partially depleted is also shown to match expectations and operation at down to half the final depletion voltage gives adequate efficiencies. Uncertainties in the anticipated dose and damage effects argue strongly for this additional robustness in detectors which must operate with very limited access in the hostile environment of the LHC for 10 yr.

Abstract: A set of low-mass drift chambers designed for the tracking of di-electrons in the HADES spectrometer is presented. Short radiation length is ensured by using a Helium-based gas mixture and aluminium cathode wires, whereas the acceptance is maximised by limiting the width of the side frames of the detectors. The measured performance of these devices, which improves with increasing concentration of quencher gas, is shown and discussed. Position resolutions down to 70 μm have been obtained under stable operation. Long-term gain stability is also reported.

Abstract: Data on inclusive pion and $\ensuremath{\eta}$ production measured with the dielectron spectrometer HADES in the reaction $p+{}^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$ at a kinetic beam energy of 3.5 GeV are presented. Our results, obtained with the photon-conversion method, supplement the rather sparse information on neutral-meson production in proton-nucleus reactions existing for this bombarding energy regime. The reconstructed ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions are confronted with transport-model calculations, which account fairly well for both ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}$ production.

Abstract: New results on the differential cross section in deuteron-proton elastic scattering are obtained at the deuteron kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV with the HADES spectrometer. The angular range of 69°-125° in the center of mass system is covered. The obtained results are compared with the relativistic multiple scattering model calculation using the CD-Bonn deuteron wave function. The data at fixed scattering angles in the c.m. are in qualitative agreement with the constituent counting rules prediction.

Abstract: We present results of an exclusive measurement of the first-excited state of the $\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ hyperon, $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{(1385)}^{+}$, produced in $p+p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}+{K}^{+}+n$ at $3.5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}$ beam energy. The extracted data allow the detailed study of the invariant mass distribution of the $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{(1385)}^{+}$. The mass distribution is well described by a relativistic Breit-Wigner function with a maximum at ${m}_{0}=1383.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$ and a width of $40.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$. The exclusive production cross section comes out to be $22.27\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.89\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.{56}_{\ensuremath{-}2.10}^{+3.07}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}b$. Angular distributions of the $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{(1385)}^{+}$ in different reference frames are found to be compatible with the hypothesis that $33%$ of $\ensuremath{\Sigma}{(1385)}^{+}$ result from the decay of an intermediate broad ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}$ excitation at about $2000\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$.

Abstract: The key element providing hadron identification in the future Compressed Baryonic Matter spectrometer at FAIR is a time-of-flight wall placed at 10 m distance from the target. The most promising technological option for such a task consists on a 150 m 2 carpet based on Resistive Plate Chambers. Due to the fixed-target geometry, the conceptual design foresees two extreme regions: an outermost region (low rate/low multiplicity) covered by float glass RPCs in multi-strip fashion, and a central region (high rate/high multiplicity) consisting of densely packed read-out cells made with low resistive electrodes. Abstract: The aim of the present analysis is to determine the relative production cross sections of the Λ(1405) and Σ(1385)0 resonances in p+p collisions at Ekin = 3.5 GeV measured with HADES. Upper and lower limits have been determined for the ratio $\sigma_{(\Sigma(1385)^{0}+p+K^{+})}/\sigma_{(\Lambda(1405)+p+K^{+})}=0.76_{-0.26}^{+0.54}$. The knowledge of this ratio is an essential input for the analysis of the decay Λ(1405)→Σ± π ∓ , where an unambiguous separation of the Λ(1405) and Σ(1385)0 signals is not possible.

Abstract: Results on pp, π+π+, and π-π- intensity interferometry are reported for collisions of Ar+KCl at 1.76$A$~GeV beam energy, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions as a function of the relative momentum are compared to model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources. The π π source radii are found significantly larger than the pp emission radius. The present radii do well complement the source-size excitation functions of the collision system of size $A+A \simeq 40+40$. The pp source radius at fixed beam energy is found to increase linearly with the cube root of the number of participants. From this trend, a lower limit of the pp correlation radius is deduced.

Abstract: Results on $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ femtoscopy are reported at the lowest energy so far. At a beam energy of $1.76A$ GeV, the reaction $\mathrm{Ar}+\mathrm{KCl}$ was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ correlations at low relative momenta. The experimental correlation function is compared to corresponding model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ emission source. The $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ source radius is found to be slightly smaller than the $\mathit{pp}$ correlation radius for a similar collision system. The present $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ radius is significantly smaller than that found for $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}/\mathrm{Pb}+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions in the AGS, SPS, and RHIC energy domains but larger than that observed for electroproduction from He. Taking into account all available data, we find the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ source radius to increase almost linearly with the number of participants to the power of one-third.

Abstract: We report first results on a deep subthreshold production of the doubly strange hyperon XI{sup -} in a heavy-ion reaction. At a beam energy of 1.76A GeV the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity LAMBDA sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of the decay channel XI{sup -}->LAMBDApi{sup -}. The deduced XI{sup -}/(LAMBDA+SIGMA{sup 0}) production ratio of (5.6+-1.2{sub -1.7}{sup +1.8})x10{sup -3} is significantly larger than available model predictions.

Abstract: The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR/Darmstadt aims at the investigation of highly compressed nuclear matter at moderate temperatures in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. CBM uses rare probes for studying fundamental questions of QCD. Currently the technical design of CBM foresees a time-of-flight (TOF) wall equipped with resistive plate chambers (RPCs) 10m downstream from the target. The inner part of the TOF wall covers 50 – 100 mrad around the beam axis with estimated flux densities of charged particles of ≈2 · 104 s−1 cm−2, thus radiation hard detector components are indispensable in the forward direction. RPC tests were conducted at the superconducting electron linac ELBE at FZ Dresden-Rossendorf using MeV electrons mimicking GeV minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) for detector studies. The pulse width of ≈5 ps of the ELBE beam provides the possibility to use its radio frequency directly as a time reference. ELBE also provides high rates (up to 1mA beam current). Conventional timing RPCs with standard float glass electrodes are only efficient up to flux densities of ≪ 103 s−1 cm−22. Decreasing the RC time constant of the electrodes requires material with lower volume resistivity while maintaining the time resolution (≪ 100 ps). Timing and rate parameters of various RPCs were tested at ELBE, including conventional RPCs with float glass electrodes, as well as RPC electrodes made of special glasses (silicated) with 3 – 4 orders of magnitude lower volume resistivity than float glass (1013 Ωcm). The NIPNE (Bucharest, Romania) group developed a prototype RPC with Pestov glass [5] electrodes (1010 Ωcm) read out via stripe lines.

Abstract: The invariant-mass spectrum of e{sup +}e{sup -} pairs produced in {sup 12}C+{sup 12}C collisions at an incident energy of 2 GeV per nucleon has been measured for the first time. The measured pair production probabilities span over 5 orders of magnitude from the {pi}{sup 0}-Dalitz to the {rho}/{omega} invariant-mass region. Dalitz decays of {pi}{sup 0} and {eta} account for all the yield up to 0.15 GeV/c{sup 2}, but for only about 50% above this mass. A comparison with model calculations shows that the excess pair yield is likely due to baryon-resonance and vector-meson decays. Transport calculations based on vacuum spectral functions fail, however, to describe the entire mass region.

Abstract: 9 pages.-- HADES Collaboration: et al., The High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer HADES has been constructed at the SIS accelerator (GSI Darmstadt) to investigate electron-positron pairs produced in proton, pion and heavy ion induced reactions. The main goal of these studies is to explore properties of hadrons in nuclear matter. The apparatus and the experimental results from C+C at 2.0 AGeV and 1.0 AGeV and p+p at 2.2 GeV compared with Monte-Carlo events from a generator based on known cross-sections and branching ratios are presented.

Abstract: Four-gap resistive plate chamber (RPC) prototypes with silicate glass electrodes (bulk resistivity ∼10 8 –10 9 Ω cm) were studied for suitability in time-of-flight (TOF) applications at high rates. These studies were performed using a continuous electron beam of 34 MeV at the FZ Dresden–Rossendorf electron linac ELBE. Time resolutions of about 100 ps and efficiencies larger than 95% were obtained for flux densities up to 20 kHz/cm 2 .

Abstract: The tracking system of the dielectron spectrometer HADES at GSI Darmstadt is formed out of 24 low-mass, trapezoidal multi-layer drift chambers providing in total about 30 square meter of active area. Low multiple scattering in the in total four planes of drift chambers before and after the magnetic field is ensured by using helium-based gas mixtures and aluminum cathode and field wires. First in-beam performance results are contrasted with expectations from simulations. Emphasis is placed on the energy loss information, exploring its relevance regarding track recognition., 6 pages, 4 figures, presented at the 10th Vienna Conference on Instrumentation, Vienna, February 2004, to be published in NIM A (special issue)
