In communication links between satellites and ground stations, the transmitted signal is exposed to disturbances such as noise of different types that hinder reception or retrieval of information. For that reason, different methods are used to process the received signal and to remove these perturbations, and thus recover the information. Different techniques of signal analysis have been used to achieve the above described but the results are not completely satisfactory. The Hilbert Huang Transform has been applied increasingly in different areas and satellite signals are not the exception. In this work, a study where the Hilbert-Huang transform is used to analyze the received signal and removes these perturbations, and thus recover the transmitted signal is presented.

Este artículo describe una experiencia desarrollada en el marco del Proyecto de investigación“E-Curriculum: Flexibilización del Curriculum hacia La Sociedad del Conocimiento Complejo en las Carreras de Ingeniería” la que permitió analizar el proceso de aprendizaje y evolución cognitiva de los estudiantes involucrados en la misma. Ésta tiene la particularidad de haber sido aplicada a estudiantes ingresantes al sistema de educación superior y ser un planteo desafiante y novedoso, dadas las condiciones, de desarrollar un tema de forma autónoma sin explicación previa de los docentes. Este trabajo describe la estrategia didáctico-pedagógica aplicada por medio de la realización de un Trabajo Práctico que permitiera a los alumnos el desarrollo de diferentes habilidades y competencias, aprendizaje autónomo, búsqueda bibliográfica, selección de la información, integración de los contenidos curriculares al perfil profesional, el aprendizaje colaborativo, trabajo en grupos, la utilización de TIC y otros aspectos.

In this work, a comparison of the microwave absorption properties of Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes, Agave atrovirens branches, and Cocos nucifera L. husk samples was performed. The study was carried out by inserting dry and powdered samples of these organic materials transversely and in the middle of a rectangular waveguide, for which scattering parameters S21 and S11 were measured to estimate the absorption coefficient. These measurements were compared to determine the material that behaves the best as a microwave absorber with a view to develop future low-cost and eco-friendly products by reusing agricultural waste. Specifically, Agave atrovirens sample showed the best performance, having an average value of absorption coefficient of 0.4218, while its maximum was 0.5792 at 9.706 GHz within the range from 8.005 to 13 GHz.

The Fly-CURE is a genetics-focused multi-institutional Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) that provides undergraduate students with hands-on research experiences within a course. Through the Fly-CURE, undergraduate students at diverse types of higher education institutions across the United States map and characterize novel mutants isolated from a genetic screen in "Drosophila melanogaster." To date, more than 20 mutants have been studied across 20 institutions, and our scientific data have led to eleven publications with more than 500 students as authors. To evaluate the impact of the Fly-CURE experience on students, we developed and validated assessment tools to identify students' perceived research self-efficacy, sense of belonging in science, and intent to pursue additional research opportunities. Our data, collected over three academic years and involving 14 institutions and 480 students, show gains in these metrics after completion of the Fly-CURE across all student subgroups analyzed, including comparisons of gender, academic status, racial and ethnic groups, and parents' educational background. Importantly, our data also show differential gains in the areas of self-efficacy and interest in seeking additional research opportunities between Fly-CURE students with and without prior research experience, illustrating the positive impact of research exposure (dosage) on student outcomes. Altogether, our data indicate that the Fly-CURE experience has a significant impact on students' efficacy with research methods, sense of belonging to the scientific research community, and interest in pursuing additional research experiences.

Abstract White adipose tissue (WAT) is essential for lipid storage and systemic energy homeostasis. Understanding adipocyte formation and stability is key to developing therapies for obesity and metabolic disorders. Through a high-throughput cDNA screen, we identified PATZ1, a POZ/BTB and AT-Hook Containing Zinc Finger 1 protein, as an important adipogenic transcription factor. PATZ1 is expressed in human and mouse adipocyte precursor cells (APCs) and adipocytes. In cellular models, PATZ1 promotes adipogenesis via protein-protein interactions and DNA binding. PATZ1 ablation in mouse adipocytes and APCs leads to a reduced APC pool, decreased fat mass, and hypertrophied adipocytes. ChIP-Seq and RNA-seq analyses show that PATZ1 supports adipogenesis by interacting with transcriptional machinery at the promoter regions of key early adipogenic factors. Mass-spec results show that PATZ1 associates with GTF2I, with GTF2I modulating PATZ1’s function during differentiation. These findings underscore PATZ1’s regulatory role in adipocyte differentiation and adiposity, offering insights into adipose tissue development.

Vaccine efficacy and its quantification is a crucial concept for the proper design of public health vaccination policies. In this work we proposed a mathematical model to estimate the efficacy of the influenza vaccine in a real-word scenario. In particular, our model is a SEIR-type epidemiological model, which distinguishes vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. Mathematically, its dynamics is governed by a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations, where the non-linearity arises from the effective contacts between susceptible and infected individuals. Two key aspects of this study is that we use a vaccine distribution over time that is based on real data specific to the elderly people in the Valencian Community and the calibration process takes into account that over one influenza season a specific proportion of the population becomes infected with influenza. To consider the effectiveness of the vaccine, the model incorporates a parameter, the vaccine attenuation factor, which is related with the vaccine efficacy against the influenza virus. With this framework, in order to calibrate the model parameters and to obtain an influenza vaccine efficacy estimation, we considered the 2016–2017 influenza season in the Valencian Community, Spain, using the influenza reported cases of vaccinated and unvaccinated. In order to ensure the model identifiability, we choose to deterministically calibrate the parameters for different scenarios and we find the one with the minimum error in order to determine the vaccine efficacy. The calibration results suggest that the influenza vaccine developed for 2016–2017 influenza season has an efficacy of approximately 76.7%, and that the risk of becoming infected is five times higher for an unvaccinated individual in comparison with a vaccinated one. This estimation partially agrees with some previous studies related to the influenza vaccine. This study presents a new integrated mathematical approach to study the influenza vaccine efficacy and gives further insight into this important public health topic.

We discuss a computational system following the paradigm of distributed computing, which will allow us to simulate the epidemic propagation in random networks with large number of nodes up to one million. This paradigm consists of a server that delivers tasks to be carried out by client computers. When the task is finished, the client sends the obtained results to the server to be stored until all tasks are finished and then ready to be analysed. Finally, we show that this technique allows us to disclose the emergence of seasonal patterns in the respiratory syncytial virus transmission dynamics which do not appear neither in smaller systems nor in continuous systems.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasitic protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), represents a worldwide public health issue. To date, there is no efficient treatment to combat this pathology, and the only drugs available are usually toxic to the patient. Through the enzyme trans-salidase, the parasite invades, infects, and multiplies intracellularly in the host cell. This protein has been considered an attractive target for developing or searching for compounds with potential trypanocidal activity. In this study, an in silico analysis was performed using a Food and Drug Administration-approved computational drug repositioning approach to identify compounds with anti-Chagas potential against two trans-sialidase proteins. Those compounds with potential inhibition were analyzed and selected through a molecular docking-based virtual screening. Forty-nine compounds were identified, of which forty-five are available on the market, and the rest were evaluated in silico. Our predicted results follow that these compounds are safe for human use and could be potential anti-trans-sialidase agents.

IntroductionProblematic behavior and drug use are behaviors of social concern, especially in adolescence. There are school factors that can contribute to their development or prevent them. The objective was to establish explanatory models of the relationship between various school variables with the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis; determining its direct and/or indirect relationship with problematic behaviors.Materials and methodsThe study was cross-sectional with a sample of 346 students (Main Age=14.81; 54% women) from secondary education. Structural Equation Model (SEM) were carried to analyze the relationship between the dimensions of the Scale of perception of aspects of school life and alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consume with the presence of Problematic Behavior.ResultsProblem behavior was predicted by alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consume, and binge drinking. Different aspects of school life differentially predicted problem behavior and drug use. Sense of challenge was observed as having a reciprocal predictive relationship with problem behavior. Perception of oneself at school predicts both alcohol and tobacco use; while the value given to school predicts binge drinking.DiscussionThese findings suggests that, when addressing problem behavior and drug use that affect minors in school and have repercussions on class dynamics and academic outcomes, we should not focus exclusively on these problem areas, but rather take a more integrated approach that includes modifying different school-related aspects that act as risk factors for these types of problems.

Adipose tissue is the site of long-term energy storage. During the fasting state, exercise, and cold exposure, the white adipose tissue mobilizes energy for peripheral tissues through lipolysis. The mobilization of lipids from white adipose tissue to the liver can lead to excess triglyceride accumulation and fatty liver disease. Although the white adipose tissue is known to release free fatty acids, a comprehensive analysis of lipids mobilized from white adipocytes in vivo has not been completed. In these studies, we provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the adipocyte-secreted lipidome and show that there is interorgan crosstalk with liver. Our analysis identifies multiple lipid classes released by adipocytes in response to activation of lipolysis. Time-dependent analysis of the serum lipidome showed that free fatty acids increase within 30 min of β3-adrenergic receptor activation and subsequently decrease, followed by a rise in serum triglycerides, liver triglycerides, and several ceramide species. The triglyceride composition of liver is enriched for linoleic acid despite higher concentrations of palmitate in the blood. To further validate that these findings were a specific consequence of lipolysis, we generated mice with conditional deletion of adipose tissue triglyceride lipase exclusively in adipocytes. This loss of in vivo adipocyte lipolysis prevented the rise in serum free fatty acids and hepatic triglycerides. Furthermore, conditioned media from adipocytes promotes lipid remodeling in hepatocytes with concomitant changes in genes/pathways mediating lipid utilization. Together, these data highlight critical role of adipocyte lipolysis in interorgan crosstalk between adipocytes and liver.

Interplay between energy-storing white adipose cells and thermogenic beige adipocytes contributes to obesity and insulin resistance. Irrespective of specialized niche, adipocytes require the activity of the nuclear receptor PPARγ for proper function. Exposure to cold or adrenergic signaling enriches thermogenic cells though multiple pathways that act synergistically with PPARγ; however, the molecular mechanisms by which PPARγ licenses white adipose tissue to preferentially adopt a thermogenic or white adipose fate in response to dietary cues or thermoneutral conditions are not fully elucidated. Here, we show that a PPARγ/long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) axis integrates canonical and noncanonical thermogenesis to restrain white adipose tissue heat dissipation during thermoneutrality and diet-induced obesity. Pharmacologic inhibition or genetic deletion of the lncRNA Lexis enhances uncoupling protein 1–dependent (UCP1-dependent) and -independent thermogenesis. Adipose-specific deletion of Lexis counteracted diet-induced obesity, improved insulin sensitivity, and enhanced energy expenditure. Single-nuclei transcriptomics revealed that Lexis regulates a distinct population of thermogenic adipocytes. We systematically map Lexis motif preferences and show that it regulates the thermogenic program through the activity of the metabolic GWAS gene and WNT modulator TCF7L2. Collectively, our studies uncover a new mode of crosstalk between PPARγ and WNT that preserves white adipose tissue plasticity.

Introduction The objective of this study was to determine the changes in tobacco consumption in Spanish university students during the lockdown in 2020, and to identify vulnerable groups based on gender, age, and living situation. Methods This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. From a sample of 1540 Spanish university students, 19.9% (n=306; 77.6% women; mean age=30.9 years; SD=8.3) reported having consumed tobacco. The frequency and average daily consumption of cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) before the pandemic and during lockdown were analyzed. Results A total of 97.1% of students consumed only cigarettes, 2.9% only ENDS, and 3.3% were dual consumers. La demencia tiene una evolución crónica y progresiva generando dependencia para la realización de actividades de la vida diaria (OMSa, 2021). La enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA) es una de sus expresiones más comunes (OMSa, 2020), la cual limita algunas oportunidades de participación en ocupaciones significativas (deprivación ocupacional). Este artículo describe el proyecto Vic: Cultura y Alzheimer, el cual ha conseguido que todos los dispositivos de cultura y arte de la ciudad estén a disposición de las personas con demencia, sus familiares y cuidadores, convirtiéndola en una ciudad inclusiva y amigable para las personas con demencia. La investigación desde un enfoque cualitativo buscó comprender la percepción de utilidad por parte de los participantes y el impacto a nivel de bienestar y participación social. Fue un diálogo polifónico entre los participantes e instituciones de cultura y asistenciales, junto al Ayuntamiento y la Universidad. Los principales resultados fueron la percepción del impacto positivo en el bienestar cognitivo y emocional de los usuarios y en su participación social. Se destacó su carácter de innovación e impacto en la comunidad. Se reconocen el arte y la cultura como herramientas con poder para movilizar a toda una ciudad en pro de la inclusión, bienestar y la no estigmatización de las personas con EA.

BackgroundAmong the risks of the critically ill patient, one of the aspects to be taken into account is the high probability of occurrence of malnutrition risk (40–50%). This process leads to increased morbimortality and worsening. The use of assessment tools allows the individualization of care.ObjectiveTo analyze the different nutritional assessment tools used during the admission of critically ill patients.MethodsSystematic review of the scientific literature related to the nutritional assessment of critically ill patients. Between January 2017 and February 2022, articles were rescued from the electronic databases “Pubmed,” “Scopus,” “CINAHL” and “The Cochrane Library”; which will analyze which instruments are used during nutritional assessment in the ICU, as well as their impact on mortality and comorbidity of patients.ResultsThe systematic review was made up of 14 scientific articles that met the selection criteria, obtained from seven different countries. The instruments described were: mNUTRIC, NRS 2002, NUTRIC, SGA, MUST and the ASPEN and ASPEN criteria. All the included studies demonstrated beneficial effects after nutritional risk assessment. mNUTRIC was the most widely used assessment instrument, with the best predictive validity for mortality and adverse outcomes.ConclusionThe use of nutritional assessment tools makes it possible to know the real situation of patients, and by objectifying situations, to allow different interventions to improve the nutritional level of patients. The best effectiveness has been achieved using tools such as mNUTRIC, NRS 2002 and SGA.

Abstract Hypertension is the most common cause of death and disability worldwide with its prevalence rising in low to middle income countries. It remains to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines with poor BP control as one of the main causes. Different societies and groups worked and collaborated together to develop the 2020 Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines of hypertension arising for the need to come up with a comprehensive local practice guideline for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow up of persons with hypertension. A technical working group was organized into six clusters that analyzed the 30 clinical questions commonly asked in practice, looking into the definition of hypertension, treatment thresholds, blood pressure targets, and appropriate medications to reach targets. This guideline also includes recommendations for the specific management of hypertension among individuals with uncomplicated hypertension, hypertension among those with diabetes, stroke, chronic kidney disease, as well as hypertension among pregnant women and pediatric populations. It also looked into the appropriate screening and monitoring of patients when managing hypertension, and identification of groups who are at high risk for cardiovascular (CV) events. The ADAPTE process was used in developing the statements and recommendations which were then presented to a panel of experts for discussion and approval to come up with the final statements. This guideline aims to aid Filipino healthcare professionals to provide evidence‐based care for persons with hypertension and help those with hypertension adequately control their blood pressure and reduce their CV risk

Internet of Things cybersecurity is gaining attention as the number of devices installed in IoT environments is exponentially increasing while the number of attacks successfully addressed to these devices are also proliferating. Security concerns have, however, been mainly addressed to service availability and information integrity and confidentiality. Code integrity, on the other hand, is not receiving proper attention, mainly because of the limited resources of these devices, thus preventing the implementation of advanced protection mechanisms. This situation calls for further research on how traditional mechanisms for code integrity can be adapted to IoT devices. This work presents a mechanism for code integrity in IoT devices based on a virtual-machine approach. A proof-of-concept virtual machine is presented, specially designed for providing code integrity during firmware updates. The proposed approach has been experimentally validated in terms of resource consumption among the most-widespread micro-controller units. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of this robust mechanism for code integrity.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is composed of thermogenic cells that convert chemical energy into heat to maintain a constant body temperature and counteract metabolic disease. The metabolic adaptations required for thermogenesis are not fully understood. Here, we explore how steady state levels of metabolic intermediates are altered in brown adipose tissue in response to cold exposure. Transcriptome and metabolome analysis revealed changes in pathways involved in amino acid, glucose, and TCA cycle metabolism. Using isotopic labeling experiments, we found that activated brown adipocytes increased labeling of pyruvate and TCA cycle intermediates from U13C-glucose. Although glucose oxidation has been implicated as being essential for thermogenesis, its requirement for efficient thermogenesis has not been directly tested. We show that mitochondrial pyruvate uptake is essential for optimal thermogenesis, as conditional deletion of Mpc1 in brown adipocytes leads to impaired cold adaptation. Isotopic labeling experiments using U13C-glucose showed that loss of MPC1 led to impaired labeling of TCA cycle intermediates. Loss of MPC1 in BAT increased 3-hydroxybutyrate levels in blood and BAT in response to the cold, suggesting that ketogenesis provides an alternative fuel source to compensate. Collectively, these studies highlight that complete glucose oxidation is essential for optimal brown fat thermogenesis.

The benefits that technology can provide in terms of health and support for independent living are in many cases not enough to break the barriers that prevent older adults from accepting and embracing technology. This work proposes a hardware and software platform based on a smart mirror, which is equipped with a set of digital solutions whose main focus is to overcome older adults’ reluctance to use technology at home and wearable devices on the move. The system has been developed in the context of two use cases: the support of independent living for older individuals with neurodegenerative diseases and the promotion of physical rehabilitation activities at home. Aspects such as reliability, usability, consumption of computational resources, performance and accuracy of the proposed platform and digital solutions have been evaluated in the initial stages of the pilots within the SHAPES project, an EU-funded innovation action. It can be concluded that the SHAPES smart mirror has the potential to contribute as a technological breakthrough to overcome the barriers that prevent older adults from engaging in the use of assistive technologies.

El presente trabajo realiza una valoración económica de la provisión de bienes públicos (BBPP) por parte del olivar de montaña en Andalucía empleando experimentos de elección. Los resultados reflejan un comportamiento diferencial del productor en función del grado de exigencia, con compensaciones modestas para escenarios de producción integrada (menor de 80 €/ha), y notables paralos escenarios de producción ecológica reforzada y de vocación neta de provisión de BBPP (superiores a 300 €/ha). Se muestra asimismo la escasa relevancia que presenta la inclusión de una prima adicional por resultados.

La anemia es un grave problema de salud pública en América Latina. En el Perú la proporción de niños entre 6 y 35 meses con anemia fue de 43,5% en el 2018. El objetivo de esta publicación es revisar las diferentes oportunidades de aplicación de las tecnologías de información y comunicación (TICs) en el fortalecimiento de la lucha contra la anemia en nuestro país; bajo la premisa de que la aplicación de las TICs puede convertirse en una excelente oportunidad para mejorar el acceso y calidad de los servicios de salud ofrecidos por el sistema público. La literatura revisada muestra diversas experiencias previas que incluyen la utilización de mensajes de texto a través de celulares y desarrollo de aplicativos para teléfonos inteligentes. Sin embargo, se requiere de más investigación, con mejores niveles de evidencias que, finalmente, ayuden a la elaboración de estrategias eficientes y a la mejora de políticas sanitarias en un tema que es una prioridad nacional de cara al bicentenario.

Manililla is a mango variety whose residues contain bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids, with high added value. The use of environmentally friendly extraction technology would be of great relevance; hence, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of solvent relation, sonication time and amplitude on the ultrasound-assisted extraction of total polyphenols in Manililla mango residues (peel, endocarp and kernel) and antioxidant activity. An experimental design 23 with a central point was used to evaluate the curvature behavior of the process variables. Conventional maceration was used as a control. The better conditions were obtained at the central point using 50% ethanol in water, 60% amplitude and 20 min of sonication time. We obtained values of up to 1814 mg GAE/100 g, 469 mg GAE/100 g and 672 mg GAE/100 g of total polyphenols and 1228 mg QE/100 g, 653 mg QE/100 g and 880 mg QE/100 g of total flavonoids for peel, endocarp and kernel, respectively. Mangiferin was quantified in ultrasound-assisted extraction at 150 mg/g in peel and 0.025 mg/g in the kernel, but it was not detectable in maceration. An antioxidant capacity of 87%, 14% and 83% inhibition for peel, endocarp and kernel, respectively, were obtained. Peel and kernel were the residues with higher potential as extraction material, while endocarp was not.
