1. Electronic Band Alignment at Complex Oxide Interfaces Measured by Scanning Photocurrent Microscopy

Abstract

Abstract The band alignment at an Al2O3/SrTiO3 heterointerface forming a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) was investigated using scanning photocurrent microscopy (SPCM) in an electrolyte-gated environment. We used a focused UV laser source for above-the-bandgap illumination on the SrTiO3 layer, creating electron-hole pairs that contributed to the photocurrent through migration towards the metal electrodes. The polarity of the SPCM signals of a bare SrTiO3 device shows typical p-type behavior at zero gate bias, in which the photogenerated electrons are collected by the electrodes. In contrast, the SPCM polarity of 2DEG device indicates that the hole carriers were collected by the metal electrodes. Careful transport measurements revealed that the gate-dependent conductance of the 2DEG devices exhibits n-type switching behavior. More importantly, the SPCM signals in 2DEG devices demonstrated very unique gate-responses that cannot be found in conventional semiconducting devices, based on which we were able to perform detailed investigation into the electronic band alignment of the 2DEG devices and obtain the valence band offset at the heterointerface.

2. P050 Intraperitoneally injected 3-dimensional cultured tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells in murine colitis model form aggregates with mouse immune cells: A preliminary study

Abstract

Background 3-dimensional (3D) cultured tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (TMSCs) showed higher therapeutic efficacy in murine colitis model than conventional 2D-cultured TMSCs via increased anti-inflammatory cytokine expression. Here, we evaluated the in-vivo localization and formation of 3D-cultured TMSCs using electron microscopy. Methods Chronic mouse colitis was induced by oral administration of 1.5% dextran sulfate sodium for 30 days. 3D-cultured TMSCs and 2D-cultured TMSCs was injected intraperitoneally on day 6 and day 16 after inducing colitis in mice. TMSC was 3D-cultured as a spheroid for 24 hours before intraperitoneal injection. On day 31, mice were euthanized and the intraperitoneal localization of 3D-cultured TMSCs was evaluated using immunofluorescence analysis. Moreover, the in-vivo characterization of 3D-cultured TMSCs was evaluated using electron microscopy. Results In vitro 3D-cultured TMSC spheroids were measured to have an average size of 182.4 μm on day 1, 169.4 μm on day 2, and 154.1 μm on day 3; however, the size of spheroids gradually decreased after 2 days of culture. In mice treated with 2D-cultured TMSCs, there were no detectable TMSCs at the time of sacrifice. In mice treated with 3D-cultured TMSCs, white variable sized spherical aggregates were observed. These aggregates were attached to peritoneal cavity including omentum and mesentery. In fluorescence microscopy, these aggregates were stained with human nuclear antigen antibody, indicating that the transplanted 3D-cultured TMSCs formed a cluster in the peritoneum even 14 days after intraperitoneal injection. In electron microscopy, these aggregates were covered with mouse lymphocytes. In the inside of spheroids, suspected mesenchymal cell and mesothelial cell were distributed. Conclusion Intraperitoneally injected 3D-cultured TMSCs were found as aggregates in the peritoneal cavity of mouse even 14 days after injection. In electron microscopy, these aggregates were covered with mouse lymphocytes. Based on the results of current study, functional studies evaluating the role of TMSC as a cell therapy, including cell-to-cell communication between TMSC and immune cells, are needed.

3. P258 The association between dietary quality and disease severity in Korean young adult patients with Crohn’s disease: A pilot study

Abstract

Background Although associations between various single nutrients and exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been reported, more recent attention has focused on overall dietary patterns and quality rather than a single nutrient. This study was to investigate the association of dietary inflammatory potential and dietary quality with disease severity in young adult Crohn’s disease (CD) patients. Methods Non-consecutive 3-day food records were investigated in 25 patients with CD aged 19-40 years. Patients with moderate or severe active disease were excluded to investigate their usual dietary habits. A survey on dietary behavior was conducted and clinical data including the disease progress were collected. To investigate potential pro-inflammatory dietary habits in a patient's usual diet, food-based index of dietary inflammatory potential score (FBDI), glycemic index (GI), and glycemic load (GL) were calculated. Diet quality was evaluated using a tool called Diet Quality Index-international (DQI). Results Although most patients showed adequate caloric intake, 72% of the enrolled patients had a potential pro-inflammatory pattern identified as FBDI. The FBDI was significantly associated with intake of mixed coffee and sweeten drinks, beef, and pork (P < 0.05). Patients who had a serious clinical course such as history of surgery or the use of biologics, tended to have a higher FBDI (6.45 vs 2.44, P = 0.08), and showed a higher proportion with a low DQI (53% vs 20%, P = 0.06). Only 30% of the high FBDI group showed deep remission after 12 to 18 months of follow-up endoscopic or image study, whereas 72.7% of the low FBDI group showed deep remission (P =0.05). A significantly positive correlation was derived between FBDI and GL (r =0.452, P = 0.02). Conclusion For the care of patients with CD, it is necessary to evaluate the dietary quality as well as the total nutrient intake, and we need to educate the patients that dietary habits can affect the disease prognosis.

4. P088 Restoration of gut microbiota and changes in inflammatory susceptibility by dextran sulfate sodium after antibiotic treatment in mice

Abstract

Background It has been suggested that changes in gut microbiota have an important effect on the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In studies using germ-free mice, it has been reported that the absence of microbiota rarely causes dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-colitis. This study was to investigate whether the changes in DSS-colonic inflammation in mice treated with antibiotics were comparable to the results in germ-free mice. Methods Ampicillin + enrofloxacin were treated in six 9-week-old C57BL/6 mice for initial 3 days and stools were sampled daily to measure the total amount of bacterial 16S rRNA. The time of loss and restoration of gut microbiota was investigated after repeated antibiotics. The severity of colitis and barrier damage were compared between the following groups: (i) control group, (ii) DSS group, and, and (iii) DSS + antibiotics group. The DSS group was allowed to drink 3% DSS from day 5 and maintained for 7 days, and colon tissues were obtained from all groups on day 12. The inflammatory markers (IL-1α, IL-6, IL-17, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α) and gut barrier markers (Zonular occludens (ZO)-1, occludin, claudin-1, claudin-4) in colon tissues were comparatively analyzed between groups. Results Bacterial 16S rRNA was not detected from day 4 after the antibiotics, and restoration started from day 11. After repeated antibiotics, microbial depletion was re-confirmed on day 14, but restoration appeared on day 18, confirming faster recovery. The expression levels of IL-1α, IL-17, and TNF-α in the DSS + antibiotics group did not differ from the control but were significantly lower than the DSS group (all p < 0.01). However, the expression of ZO-1 and claudin-4 was significantly lower in the DSS + antibiotics treatment group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion The antibiotic cocktail could dramatically reduce gut microbiota over a period, but the effect would decrease as it is repeated. Depletion of gut microbiota after antibiotics would dramatically reduce DSS-colonic inflammation but could damage the gut barrier or at least not prevent barrier dysfunction.

Abstract

High-pressure Brillouin spectroscopy was applied to the PbHf0.975Sn0.025O3 single crystal to obtain the pressure dependences of its acoustic properties. The Brillouin frequency shift of the longitudinal acoustic mode showed two anomalies, one at ∼2.5 GPa and the other at ∼9 GPa, indicating two pressure-induced phase transitions consistent with recent Raman measurements. The half width of this mode exhibited damping anomalies at nearly the same pressures. The possible origin and the nature of these transitions are discussed.

Abstract

The phase transition sequence of a PbHf 0.7 Sn 0.3 O 3 single crystal was investigated by using Brillouin spectroscopy. The longitudinal acoustic mode showed three distinct changes at ∼370 K, ∼455 K and ∼495 K which corresponded to the antiferroelectric 1 → antiferroelectric 2 → intermediate → paraelectric phase transitions upon heating. The paraelectric phase was characterized by softening acoustic mode, increasing acoustic damping and the appearance of quasielastic central peaks which were observed upon approaching the phase transition temperature. The relaxation times derived from the acoustic mode anomalies and the central peak were consistent with each other and showed a slowing-down behavior. These precursor phenomena were attributed to the polar clusters having broken inversion symmetry. The substitution of Hf with Sn induced a very soft intermediate phase between the paraelectric and the antiferroelectric phases, where the longitudinal acoustic mode exhibited the lowest mode frequency along with substantially high acoustic damping. The transverse acoustic mode, which was observed in the two antiferroelectric phases, did not appear in the intermediate phase. These results indicated that the average symmetry of the intermediate phase may be cubic consisting of fine ferroelastic domains.

Abstract

The acoustic properties of amorphous quinidine were investigated by using Brillouin spectroscopy as a function of temperature. The longitudinal sound velocity and the acoustic absorption coefficient showed drastic changes in their slopes at the glass transition temperature of 328 K, which was nearly the same as the thermodynamic and the dielectric glass transition temperatures. The clear difference between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of quinidine, as well as the crystallization process, could be revealed by observing the change in the Brillouin spectrum. Analysis of the lowtemperature absorption coefficient showed that the excess acoustic damping could be attributed to intramolecular relaxation motions, such as side-group rotations.

Abstract

We demonstrate all-optical switching of plasmonic resonance patterned on the carbon nanotube films supported on the silicon substrates. A considerable suppression of terahertz wave was observed in the transmission resonance, when the near-infrared femtosecond laser pulse is irradiated. A Fourier-transformed terahertz spectrum reveals that the resonance feature that was governed by the geometry of the slot antenna are almost completely removed with the laser irradiation having sufficiently high pulse energy reaching 18 μJ. A screening of terahertz field was analyzed in terms of the free carrier generation originating from the photoexcitation in semiconductor film.

Abstract

Vibrational modes in the terahertz (THz) frequency range are good indicators of lead halide perovskite's crystallization phase. We performed real-time THz spectroscopy to monitor the crystallization kinetics in the perovskite films. First, THz absorptance was measured while the perovskite film was annealed at different temperatures. By analyzing the Avrami exponent, we observed an abrupt dimensionality switch (from 1D to 2D) with increasing temperature starting at approximately 90 °C. We also monitored the laser-induced crystallinity enhancement of the preannealed perovskite film. The THz absorptance increased initially, then subsequently decayed over a couple of hours, although the enhancement factor varies depending on the film crystallinity. In particular, the Avrami analysis implied that the light-induced crystallization was assisted by the 1D diffusion processes. The activation photon energy was measured at 2.3 eV, which indicated that enhanced crystallization originated from the photoinduced structural change of residual lead iodide at the grain boundary.

Abstract

We developed hybrid slot antenna structures for microbial sensing in the THz frequency range, where silver nanowires (AgNWs) were employed to increase the sensitivity. In order to fabricate the hybrid devices, we partially etched the AgNW in the slot antenna region, where we can expect the field enhancement effect at the AgNW tip. We measured the resonant-frequency shift observed upon the deposition of a polymer layer, and observed that the sensitivity increased upon the introduction of AgNWs, with an enhancement factor of more than four times (approximately six times in terms of figure-of-merit). The sensitivity increased with the AgNW density until saturation. In addition, we tested devices with PRD1 viruses, and obtained an enhancement factor of 3.4 for a slot antenna width of 3 μm. Furthermore, we performed finite-difference time-domain simulations, which confirmed the experimental results. The sensitivity enhancement factor decreased with the decrease of the slot width, consistent with the experimental findings. Two-dimensional mapping of the electric field confirmed the strong field localization and enhancement at the AgNW tips.

Abstract

In the present study, we visualize ultrafast carrier dynamics in one-dimensional nanoscale devices, such as Si nanowire and carbon nanotube transistors using femtosecond photocurrent microscopy. We investigate transit times of ultrashort carriers that are generated near one metallic electrode and subsequently transported toward the opposite electrode based on drift and diffusion motions. Conversely, pure diffusion motion is observed when the pump pulse is located in the middle of the nanowires. Carrier dynamics have been addressed for various working conditions, in which we found that the carrier velocity and pulse width can be manipulated by the external electrodes. In particular, the carrier velocities extracted from transit times increase for a larger negative gate bias because of the increased field strength at the Schottky barrier.

Abstract

We demonstrate the fabrication of plasmonic and metamaterials devices, operating in the terahertz frequency range, by using highly conductive, single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network films. We fabricated various patterns on the SWNT films using photolithography or laser machining techniques, whose resonance behaviors are determined by geometric parameters such as the periodicity of the array patterns or the shape of the individual elements. The excellent mechanical properties of SWNT films enabled us to fabricate free-standing and highly flexible devices. More importantly, using postprocessings such as chemical treatments and nanoparticle coatings, we were able to engineer the dielectric constants of the SWNT films, such as enhancing or degrading the conductive properties. As a result of the postprocessings, the resonance peak of the plasmonic devices was suppressed or retrieved, which is not achievable in conventional metal films. Abstract

We report on terahertz electromagnetic field transmission through metallic slot antennas supported on various dielectric substrates. The substrate effect strongly modifies the transmission resonance compared to the free-standing case, while the resonance can be determined systematically by introducing an effective refractive index. The relative contribution of the substrate index to the effective index has been measured for various substrates, and shows a good agreement with theoretical calculations based on a coupled mode method. In addition, the slot antenna arrays embedded in a flexible substrate show a transmission resonance governed by a substrate refractive index.

Abstract

We fabricated plasmonic devices operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range using silver nanowire (AgNW) network films. AgNW films exhibit high conductivity and good transparency in the visible range, with a figure of merit comparable to that of conventional transparent conducting oxide films. The THz conductivity of AgNW films can be improved by post-treatment procedures such as welding using graphene oxide flakes. Using photolithography, we fabricated the slot antenna arrays whose resonance behaviors are determined by geometric parameters such as the length of individual elements. The plasmonic resonance varied with the sheet resistances of the film, enabling us to manipulate the quality factors and the peak position of the resonance, in particular, by controlling the films thickness and by the post-procedures such as the chemical vapor treatment. Abstract

Several studies have shown physiological functions of interleukin (IL)-32, a novel cytokine. However, the role of IL-32 in cancer development has not been reported. In this study, we showed that IL-32γ inhibited tumor growth in IL-32γ-overexpressing transgenic mice inoculated with melanoma as well as colon tumor growth in xenograft nude mice inoculated with IL-32γ-transfected colon cancer cells (SW620). The inhibitory effect of IL-32γ on tumor growth was associated with the inhibition of constitutive activated nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) and of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). The expression of antiapoptotic, cell proliferation and tumor-promoting genes (bcl-2, X-chromosome inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP), cellular IAP and cellular FADD-like IL-1β-converting enzyme-inhibitory protein, cyclin D), cyclin-dependent kinase 4, cycolooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase was decreased, whereas the expression of apoptotic target genes (caspase-3 and -9, bax) increased. In tumor, spleen and blood, the number of cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells and CD57(+) natural killer cells and the levels of IL-10 increased, but that of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-1β and IL-6 decreased. We also found that forced overexpression of IL-32γ inhibited colon cancer cell (SW620 and HCT116) growth accompanied with the inhibition of activated NF-κB and STAT3 in vitro. In addition, when IL-32γ was knocked down by small interfering RNA (siRNA) or neutralized with an anti-IL-32γ antibody, IL-32γ-induced colon cancer cell growth inhibition, the IL-32γ-induced decrease of TNF-α, IL-1 and IL-6 production, and the increase of IL-10 production were abolished. However, siRNA of NF-κB and STAT3 augmented IL-32γ-induced colon cancer cell growth inhibition. These findings indicate significant pathophysiological roles of IL-32γ in cancer development.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal glutathione peroxidase (GI-GPx) is an antioxidant enzyme that has been known to be restricted to the gastrointestinal tract in rodents. In an effort to determine the expression pattern of GI-GPx mRNA during organogenesis, quantitative real-time PCR and in situ hybridization for GI-GPx mRNA were conducted in whole embryos or each developing organ of mice. GI-GPx mRNA was expressed more abundantly in the extraembryonic tissues, including placenta than in embryos on embryonic days (EDs) 7.5-18.5 (P < 0.05). When compared with the expression levels of cytosolic GPx (cGPx) mRNA, GI-GPx mRNA levels were low in the embryos, but relatively high in the extraembryonic tissues (P < 0.05). According to the results of whole mount in situ hybridizations, GI-GPx mRNA was principally expressed in the ectoplacental cone, neural tube and fold, and primitive heart at EDs 7.5-8.5. At EDs 9.5-12.5, GI-GPx mRNA was abundantly expressed in nervous tissues such as the telencephalon, mesencephalon and dorsal neural tube and was also detected in the forelimb and hindlimb at EDs 10.5-12.5. In the sectioned embryos after ED 13.5, GI-GPx mRNA levels were high in the cerebral cortex, metanephric corpuscle, pancreatic ducts, surface epithelia of the skin, inner ear, and nasal conchae, gastrointestinal tract, liver, urinary bladder, airway passages of lung, and whisker follicles. These findings indicate that GI-GPx is not only spatiotemporally expressed in a variety of embryonic organs during organogenesis but also may perform a mutual compensatory role with the cGPx in the protection of embryos and extraembryonic tissues against the reactive oxygen species generated in ontogenetic periods.

Antiferroelectric PbHf0.975Sn0.025O3 single crystals were studied at room temperature by Raman scattering at pressures up to 16 GPa using a diamond anvil cell. Two phase transitions were found to take place at pressures near 3 and 9 GPa, respectively, as revealed by subtle changes in Raman spectral features. A soft mode was observed at the pressure-induced phase transition occurring at 9 GPa. At pressures above ∼14 GPa, the Raman peaks become very weak and the background scattering becomes very strong. The characteristic parameters of the Raman structures were determined throughout the whole phase transitions sequence.

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the process design and the die design for manufacturing the preform of a large pressure vessel. The cold-working processes are introduced to improve the fatigue strength and to simplify the manufacturing process. By the finite element simulation, the parameter design is carried out, which is subjected to constraints such as the blank sire, press capacity and other minor limitations. The proposed design results are verified by the model experiments, in which the model is scaled down to one tenth of the original size.

Abstract

This study was conducted to solve the problem of crawled spinach harvesting that had been mainly done by manpower on the outdoor fields during the winter season. Moreover, there are not enough workers available for farming at most of rural areas in Korea because farming is getting hard and the number of old-aged workers is increasing. In order to find appropriate methods of digging, picking and collecting of spinach, the tests were examined outdoors. A prototype was designed based on the results of the tests and then fabricated for digging, picking-up and then collecting in continuous operation for harvesting spinach planted in the outdoor fields. In the field test with the prototype, the vibration intensity transmitted to the driver by vibrating blade was low while the vibrating blade reduced digging power by compared to that of the fixed blade. The spinach loss was found to be as low as in the condition of digging depth of 40 mm, cam rotational velocity of 748 rpm, and blade amplitude of 16.5 m. The working performance of the prototype spinach harvester was found to be 3.8 hour/10a resulting in of labor saving and of operating cost compared to the conventional manual harvesting.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the main factors that contain a rotating velocity ratio between wheel and conveyor belt, a tilt angle of conveyor belt and a rotating velocity of a dick cutter for mechanization of Chinese leek harvest. In the survey on the cultivation of Chinese leek, row spacing of 350 m and cutting height of 10 mm from the ground were set up for field tests. Test equipment was designed to cut, pick up and convey Chinese leek one row by one row. From the results of material tests, pick-up height of conveyor belt was set up at from the bottom, and the strain and stress at rupture of Chinese leek was 0.487 m/m and 0.01078 MPa. An elastic coefficient of the rubber (Neoprene) of conveyor belts was 1.1077 under the strain of 0.3 nym. from the results of field tests, the tilt angle of conveyor belt was the range of under consideration far space of container, the velocity ratio between vehicle and conveying belt was 1 to 2.4~1.7 at 0.1~0.3 m/s of vehicle, and optimum rotating velocity of the disk cutter was 34.8 m/s or more under consideration for soil friction.

Abstract

A series of poly(trimethylenecarbonate-e-caprolactone)-block-poly(p-dioxanone) copolymers were prepared with varying feed rations by using two step polymerization reactions. Poly(trimethylenecarbonate)(e-caprolactone) random copolymer was synthesized with stannous-2-ethylhexanoate and followed by adding p-dioxanone monomer as the other block. The ring opening polymerization was carried out at high temperature and long reaction time to get high molecular weight polymers. The monofilament fibers were obtained using conventional melting spun methods. The copolymers were identified by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The physicochemical properties, such as viscosity, molecular weight, melting point, glass transition temperature, and crystallinity, were studied. The hydrolytic degradation of copolymers was studied in a phosphate buffer solution, pH = 7.2, 37 °C, and a biological absorbable test was performed in rats. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Preform design techniques have been investigated to reduce die wear and forming load and to improve material flow, filling ratio, etc. In hot forging processes, a thin deformed part of a workpiece, known as a flash, is formed in the narrow gap between the upper and lower tools. Although designers make tools that generate a flash intentionally in order to improve flow properties, excessive flash increases die wear and forming load. Therefore, it is necessary to make a preform shape that can reduce the excessive flash without changing flow properties. In this paper, a new preform design technique is proposed to reduce the excessive flash in a metal forging process. After a finite element simulation of the process is carried out with an initial billet, the flow of material in the flash region is traced from the final shape to the initial billet. The region belonging to the flash is then easily found in the initial billet. The finite element simulation is then carried out again with the modified billet from which the selected region has been removed. In several iterations of this technique, the optimal preform shape that minimizes the amount of flash without changing the forgeability can be obtained.

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande is the world's largest water Cherenkov detector, with net mass 50,000 tons. During the period April, 1996 to July, 2001, Super-Kamiokande I collected 1678 live-days of data, observing neutrinos from the Sun, Earth's atmosphere, and the K2K long-baseline neutrino beam with high efficiency. These data provided crucial information for our current understanding of neutrino oscillations, as well as setting stringent limits on nucleon decay. In this paper, we describe the detector in detail, including its site, configuration, data acquisition equipment, online and offline software, and calibration systems which were used during Super-Kamiokande I.

Abstract

The first results of the solar neutrino flux measurement from Super-Kamiokande are presented. The results shown here are obtained from data taken between the 31st of May, 1996, and the 23rd of June, 1997. Using our measurement of recoil electrons with energies above 6.5 MeV, we infer the total flux of 8B solar neutrinos to be 2.42+-0.06(stat.)+0.10-0.07(syst.)*10^6/cm^2/s. This result is consistent with the Kamiokande measurement and is 36% of the flux predicted by the BP95 solar model. The flux is also measured in 1.5 month subsets and shown to be consistent with a constant rate., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

MACRO is a large area multiple component detector located deep underground in Hall B of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Its active components consist of tanks of liquid scintillator and planes of limited streamer tubes. In addition, there are two planar areas covered with passive track-etch plastics. The full detector measures 72 m × 12 m × 9.6 m providing a large sensitive area for the detection of penetrating particles. Multiple electronics systems provide triggering on particles over a wide range of velocities, in particular, for slowly moving massive particles such as grand unified magnetic monopoles. MACRO is sensitive to relativistic particles as well as ones whose velocities are as low as 10 −4 c. Various portions of the MACRO detector have been operational since 1989. Various data sets have been analyzed and although no monopoles have been found, stringent flux limits have been set using a variety of techniques. This paper summarizes the capabilities of MACRO for monopole detection and presents some experimental results which have been obtained to date.

Abstract

We performed time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) network films coated on quartz substrates from dispersion solutions by spraying method. The rGO network films demonstrate high conductivity of about 900 S/cm in the THz frequency range after a high temperature reduction process. The frequency-dependent conductivities and the refractive indexes of the rGO films have been obtained and analyzed with respect to the Drude free-electron model, which is characterized by large scattering rate. Finally, we demonstrate that the THz conductivities can be manipulated by controlling the reduction process, which correlates well with the DC conductivity above the percolation limit. Abstract

We present terahertz (THz) wave modulation by using free-standing ZnO nanowire (NW) network films. The ZnO NW films were virtually transparent against THz waves without UV illumination. Conversely, the THz waves were attenuated under very low-intensity UV illumination, making the ZnO NW film a promising platform for low-loss, low-power and all-optical THz modulators. The complex dielectric constants measurements reveal that the UV laser induces an enhancement in the ac conductivity while leaving the real part of the dielectric constant unchanged. The relatively slow time response implies that the UV-induced modulation is closely linked to the surface trap states. The THz attenuations showed clear saturation behavior with respect to the UV intensity, from which we extracted the ZnO NW surface trap density. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract

The effects of 4-O-methylhonokiol (MH), a constituent of Magnolia officinalis, were investigated on human prostate cancer cells and its mechanism of action elucidated.The anti-cancer effects of MH were examined in prostate cancer and normal cells. The effects were validated in vivo using a mouse xenograft model.MH increased the expression of PPARγ in prostate PC-3 and LNCap cells. The pull-down assay and molecular docking study indicated that MH directly binds to PPARγ. MH also increased transcriptional activity of PPARγ but decreased NF-κB activity. MH inhibited the growth of human prostate cancer cells, an effect attenuated by the PPARγ antagonist GW9662. MH induced apoptotic cell death and this was related to G(0) -G(1) phase cell cycle arrest. MH increased the expression of the cell cycle regulator p21, and apoptotic proteins, whereas it decreased phosphorylation of Rb and anti-apoptotic proteins. Transfection of PC3 cells with p21 siRNA or a p21 mutant plasmid on the cyclin D1/ cycline-dependent kinase 4 binding site abolished the effects of MH on cell growth, cell viability and related protein expression. In the animal studies, MH inhibited tumour growth, NF-κB activity and expression of anti-apoptotic proteins, whereas it increased the transcriptional activity and expression of PPARγ, and the expression of apoptotic proteins and p21 in tumour tissues.MH inhibits growth of human prostate cancer cells through activation of PPARγ, suppression of NF-κB and arrest of the cell cycle. Thus, MH might be a useful tool for treatment of prostate cancer.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal glutathione peroxidase (GI-GPx) is an antioxidant enzyme that has been known to be restricted to the gastrointestinal tract in rodents. In an effort to determine the expression pattern of GI-GPx mRNA during organogenesis, quantitative real-time PCR and in situ hybridization for GI-GPx mRNA were conducted in whole embryos or each developing organ of mice. GI-GPx mRNA was expressed more abundantly in the extraembryonic tissues, including placenta than in embryos on embryonic days (EDs) 7.5-18.5 (P0.05). When compared with the expression levels of cytosolic GPx (cGPx) mRNA, GI-GPx mRNA levels were low in the embryos, but relatively high in the extraembryonic tissues (P0.05). According to the results of whole mount in situ hybridizations, GI-GPx mRNA was principally expressed in the ectoplacental cone, neural tube and fold, and primitive heart at EDs 7.5-8.5. At EDs 9.5-12.5, GI-GPx mRNA was abundantly expressed in nervous tissues such as the telencephalon, mesencephalon and dorsal neural tube and was also detected in the forelimb and hindlimb at EDs 10.5-12.5. In the sectioned embryos after ED 13.5, GI-GPx mRNA levels were high in the cerebral cortex, metanephric corpuscle, pancreatic ducts, surface epithelia of the skin, inner ear, and nasal conchae, gastrointestinal tract, liver, urinary bladder, airway passages of lung, and whisker follicles. These findings indicate that GI-GPx is not only spatiotemporally expressed in a variety of embryonic organs during organogenesis but also may perform a mutual compensatory role with the cGPx in the protection of embryos and extraembryonic tissues against the reactive oxygen species generated in ontogenetic periods.

We demonstrate enhanced terahertz wave transmission through carbon nanotube films with subwavelength apertures. The peak frequency of the transmitted waves matches well with the shape resonance, mainly determined by the length of the apertures and the refractive index of surrounding media.

Abstract

A measurement of the underground muon decoherence function has been performed using the multiple muon events collected by the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. A detector-independent analysis is presented for different zenith regions and rock depths; this allows direct comparison with any model of hadronic interactions. The measured decoherence function is compared with the predictions of a Monte Carlo simulation based on data taken by recent collider experiments. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Natural-convection effects during freezing of water confined inside an isotkermally cooled horizontal cylinder are experimentally investigated. From the measured ice profiles at different times for initial temperature of water T1 = 1.0−2l.7°C, the locally transient heat transfer coefficients at the ice-water interface art obtained by using a series solution of the Laplace equation in the ice. Because of the well-known density inversion effect of water in the proximity of the freezing point of water, the natural-convection flow for the solidification processes becomes significant. Depending on the initial water temperature, quite different shapes of the ice layer, the flow pattern, and the locally transient heat transfer coefficient are presented and discussed. A flow direction inversion region exists in the range ofT1 = 4.0−8.0°C, and a minimum time-average Nusselt number occurs near T1 =6.0°C A correlation for the mean Nusselt number is also obtained for a wide range of modified Grashof numbers.

Abstract

MACRO is designed to make a multiply redundant search for GUT magnetic monopoles over a wide velocity range. The 100 MHz pulse height recorder and synchronous encoder (PHRASE) and the energy reconstruction processor (ERP) are two components of that search, both based on the MACRO liquid scintillator. They are sensitive to monopoles with or without captured nuclei in the range beta similar to 10(-3) to beta similar to 1, Here, the performance of these systems is discussed, including also analysis methods and background evaluations.

Abstract

Using 5.33 x 10(6) single muons collected in 1.46 x 10(4) live hours by MACRO during the period 1991-1994, we have searched for a correlation between variations in the underground muon rate, N-mu, and seasonal temperature variations in the atmosphere. These correlations are found to be present with high statistical significance. Analysis of the relatively complete December 1992-December 1994 subset of the data yields a value for the temperature coefficient, alpha(T) = (T/N-mu)(partial derivative N-mu/partial derivative T) = 0.83 +/- 0.13. Analysis of the total data Set gives consistent results. We have compared this result with the hypothesis that the muons observed in MACRO come from pion decays alone. Although our result is consistent with the 'pion only' hypothesis, a discussion of the sensitivity of our data sample to the kaon component of the cascades leading to observed muons underground will also be presented. The multimuon data collected by the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso have been analyzed using a new method. The resulting all-particle spectrum is consistent with EAS measurements but higher and flatter than the one obtained from direct experiments.

Abstract

Multimuon data from the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso have been analyzed using a new method, which allows one to estimate the primary cosmic ray fluxes. The estimated all-particle spectrum is higher and flatter than the one obtained from direct measurements but is consistent with EAS array measurements. The spectral indexes of the fitted energy spectrum are 2.56[Formula presented]0.05 for [Formula presented]500 TeV and 2.9[Formula presented]0.3 for [Formula presented]5000 TeV with a gradual change at intermediate energies. The average mass number shows little dependence on the primary energy below 1000 TeV, with a value of 10.1[Formula presented]2.5 at 100 TeV. At higher energies the best fit average mass shows a mild increase with energy, even though no definite conclusion can be reached taking into account errors. Abstract

OBJECTIVE This study compared the technical implications and clinical outcome of patients treated for an intracerebral hemorrhage using two minimally invasive procedures: frame-based stereotactic hematoma aspiration and frameless navigation-guided hematoma aspiration followed by fibrinolysis. METHODS Thirty patients with a spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage, which was treated by a frame-based (n=15) and frameless (n=15) hematoma aspiration followed by subsequent fibrinolysis with urokinase, were retrospectively reviewed. The data for the two subsets of patients were analyzed with regard to hematoma reduction, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and degree of weakness. RESULTS In the frame-based stereotactic hematoma aspiration group, the volume of the hematoma was 15.4-100.0 mL (mean: 40.7+/-24.4), the GCS upon admission was 4-15 (mean: 10.1+/-3.0), and the grade of weakness upon admission was 1-5 (mean: 2.1+/-0.9). On the other hand, in the frameless navigation-guided hematoma aspiration group, the hematoma volume was 15.2-62.0 mL (mean: 30.0+/-15.2), the GCS upon admission was 7-15 (mean: 13.0+/-2.4), and the grade of weakness upon admission was 1-4 (mean: 2.3+/-1.2). The drainage catheter was in place for a mean duration of 5.1+/-2.4 days (range: 1-12 days). In the frame-based group, the initial hematoma was reduced by -115-88.5% (mean: 52+/-31.5) immediately after surgery, and 90.5% (41-100%) of the initial volume 14 days after surgery. In the frameless group, the initial hematoma was reduced by 11.7-90.8% (mean 57.3+/-25.1) immediately after surgery and 95.8% (87.7-100%) 14 days after surgery. The GCS score and the degree of weakness were evaluated 14 days after surgery, and the Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) score was evaluated at discharge. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups. CONCLUSION The frame-based group and the frameless group followed by fibrinolysis had similar outcomes, and both procedures effectively reduced the intracerebral hemorrhage volume within a short period of time. In addition, these procedures are simple, precise, safe, and brief with a very low rebleeding rate and mortality.

Abstract

Upward-going muon events collected with the lower half of the MACRO detector have been analyzed in order to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles possibly trapped in the core of the Sun and of the Earth. No statistically significant signal could be discriminated over the possible fluctuations of the atmospheric neutrino background. Assuming a particular neutralino model, the explorable neutralino mass region has been considered.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the flux of upgoing muons resulting from interactions of atmospheric neutrinos in the rock below MACRO. The ratio of the observed to the expected number of events integrated over all nadir angles is 0.73 ± .09 stat. ± .06 sys. ± .12 theor. . The flux of upgoing muons as a function of nadir angle is presented and compared to Monte Carlo expectations. At the 90% confidence level, the data are consistent with no neutrino oscillations or some possible oscillation hypothese with the parameters suggested by the Kamiokande contained-event analysis.

Abstract

A study of the primary cosmic ray composition in the energy range 5ṡ1014−5ṡ1015 eV is performed through the analysis of the deep underground muons and of the e.m. component of Extensive Air Showers detected in coincidence by the MACRO and EAS-TOP experiments at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. We conclude that: a) pure proton and Iron primary beams are excluded by the experimental data; b) a fraction of nuclei heavier than Helium is necessary to explain the experimental data both below and above the knee; c) a mixed composition, obtained a priori from extrapolations of the spectra directly measured below 100 TeV, yields a reasonable account of the observations up to the knee of the primary spectrum.

Abstract

Muon events collected with the streamer tube system of MACRO have been used to study the vertical muon intensity and to search for astrophysical point sources. New upper limits on the muon fluxes coming from source candidates have been obtained. The μ pair distance distribution and multimuon rates are presented and compared with Monte Carlo predictions for different primary cosmic rays composition models.

Abstract

Multimuon data from the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso have been analysed using a new method which allows one to estimate the primary cosmic ray fluxes. The estimated all-particle spectrum is higher and flatter than the one obtained from direct measurements but is consistent with EAS measurements. The average mass number shows a weak dependence on the primary energy below 10^{6} GeV. Even within large uncertainties our data support a possible increase of the average mass number at higher energies.

Abstract

A mathematical model of temperature and moisture changes for granular material exposed to infrared (IR) heat processing (micronization) was developed. The model was based on a radiation exchange principle in an enclosure composed of diffuse–gray surfaces. The validation of the model was performed for experiments conducted with peas tempered to three initial moisture contents of 20%, 25%, and 30% w.b. (wet basis). The simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental values. Further simulation experiments quantified the effect of such micronization variables as the temperature of the IR emitter, emissivity, configuration factor, temperature of the conveying trough, temperature of the surroundings, and emissivity of the processed material.

Abstract

We report a search for slowly moving magnetic monopoles in the cosmic radiation with the first supermodule of the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso. The absence of candidates established an upper limit on the monopole flux of $5.6\times10^{-15}\mbox{cm}^{-2}\mbox{sr}^{-1}\mbox{s}^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level for the velocity range of $1.8\times10^{-4}, Comment: 3 pages including 2 figures, uuencoded gz-compressed PostScript file, Talk given at TAUP '93, published in Nucl. Abstract

In 1952 Turing proposed a general model for generating biological patterns @1#. The model was realized in some definite forms and has been used successfully to produce patterns in various biological cases such as seashells, fish, zebras, leopards, giraffes, etc. @2#. The formation of patterns and their stabilities in these kinds of reaction-diffusion model are well studied and understood in the general sense @3,4#. However, a specific pattern cannot be predicted. This is because there are several parameters that can be adjusted to produce all kinds of possibilities in any of these models. In most of these systems, calculations are done on a flat surface. That is, the reaction-diffusion equations in the model are solved on a surface of zero curvature. The curvature of the geometry of the system is not taken into consideration. Recently, Varea, Aragon, and Barrio solved a Turing model on a spherical surface @5#. In their work they produced symmetric spot patterns on a sphere, which can be considered as a first step toward simulating the patterns of some microscopic organisms such as radiolarians and viruses. In this work, we consider a different type of Turing model on a spherical surface. A portion of a spherical surface is used to approximate the shape of the hard wings of lady beetles. We demonstrate that the model we use can yield patterns similar to those of the lady beetles.
