The extensive use of artificial sweeteners (ASs) has raised concerns regarding their presence, fate, and detrimental effects in water resources.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are attractive materials for use as highly selective and sensitive chemical sensors, owing to their simple preparation and affordability. GQDs have been successfully deployed as sensors for toxic metal ions, which is a significant issue due to the ever-increasing environmental contamination from agricultural and industrial activities. Despite the success of GQDs in this area, the mechanisms which underpin GQD-metal ion specificity are rarely explored. This lack of information can result in difficulties when attempting to replicate published procedures and can limit the judicious design of new highly selective GQD sensors. Furthermore, there is a dearth of GQD examples which selectively detect biologically relevant alkali and alkaline earth metals. This review will present the current state of GQDs as metal ion sensors for harmful contaminants, highlighting and discussing the discrepancies that exist in the proposed mechanisms regarding metal ion selectivity. The emerging field of GQD sensors for biorelevant metal ion species will also be reviewed, with a perspective to the future of this highly versatile material. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Plastics gradually degrade in the natural environment from the effect of irradiation, which can change the surface properties of plastics and affect the migration behaviour of pollutants. Up to now, studies on the sorption/desorption behaviour of organic pollutants on aged plastics are still limited. In this study, several types of commercial plastics (polyurethane (PU), polyamide (PA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), expanded polystyrene (EPS)) were selected to investigate the sorption and release behaviour for four kinds of bisphenols (bisphenol-F, A, B, AP). The results from Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed evidence of oxidization and surface cracks of plastics after irradiation. The sorption behaviour for both fresh and aged plastics were dominated by hydrophobicity. In addition, the electrostatic force, H-bonding interaction, and π-π interaction were also the important factors impacting the sorption process. The desorption kinetics behaviour indicates that desorption becomes faster after aging. Hydrophobicity is also an important factor that affects desorption behaviour. This study showed that sorption capacity for most fresh and aged plastics was enhanced by the impact of salinity and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Increased temperature could increase the desorption of bisphenols on both fresh and aged plastics, which illustrated that warm environments would promote more pollutants be released from plastics to water bodies.

Vertebrate and invertebrate taxa that serve as forage for predators play a critical role in coastal ecosystems by linking lower trophic levels to ecologically and economically valuable predators in upper trophic levels. We analyzed long-term data from multiple monitoring surveys in Chesapeake Bay and its major tributaries to evaluate patterns and relative abundances of forage at two spatial scales and to identify drivers of forage availability. Time series of forage abundances showed positive spatial correlation, becoming increasingly similar with declining distance between tributaries and regions of Chesapeake Bay. Statistical models were fit to identify relationships among forage taxa and climatic, biological, and environmental variables. Annual abundance indices of many forage taxa were higher in years when spring water temperatures warmed slowly, as indicated by an annual 5 °C degree-day warming index that represented the rate of warming during late winter/early spring. Forage indices also were related (in taxon-specific ways) to winter–spring chlorophyll concentration and freshwater discharge, and to three summer water quality variables: dissolved oxygen, salinity, and water temperature, in addition to a broad-scale climate indicator (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation). Our findings broadly demonstrate that bottom–up climate forcing acts to control at least some taxa at lower trophic levels in Chesapeake Bay. Ongoing phenological changes in regional climate and evidence of spatial dependence in responses of forage to environmental conditions underscore the likelihood that spatiotemporal foraging conditions for predator species will change under projected climate conditions.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are found in most eukaryotic cells and in addition to serving as lipid reservoirs, these highly dynamic organelles play fundamental roles in cell metabolism and growth. The study of LDs and their interactions with other cellular compartments provides new insights into normal cell biology and disease processes such as virus packaging, metabolic disorders, and cancer progression. Here we report the synthesis and comprehensive evaluation of two readily prepared, low molecular weight 3,4-dimethoxy-1,8-naphthalimides, as selective LD stains. The newly synthesised 1,8-naphthalimide derivative (DMN-LD), demonstrated impressive versatility compared to currently available options, by staining LDs in both live and fixed cells, as well as a three-dimensional spheroid, using both single and two-photon excitation. This new imaging agent has the potential to further unravel the complex biology of LDs, which are essential to cell survival, and when altered, underpin many disease states. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Background: To explore possible associations between polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) exposure and patients with abnormal thyroid hormone levels whose thyroid function parameters are above normal ranges. Methods: The serum of 40 patients with thyroid hormone abnormalities was collected in Kunming. triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were detected in serum using chemiluminescence. The PBDE homologs in the patients’ serum were quantitatively analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. If the detection frequency of the compound exceeded 50%, it was included in the analysis. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression were used to evaluate the correlation between PBDE homologs and five thyroid function parameters. Results: A total of 33 PBDE homologs were detected, 7 of which had a more than 50% detection rate. BDE-47 was the main homolog detected. Spearman’s correlation showed that no relationship was found between PBDE homologs and thyroid hormones. Multiple linear regression showed that BDE-153 was positively correlated with T4, negatively correlated with T3, while BDE-47 was negatively correlated with FT4 (P0.05). The β coefficient showed that the increase in the logarithmic unit of ∑7PBDEs was related to an increase in FT4 and T4 levels and decreased TSH, T3, and FT3 levels. Conclusions: There is a significant correlation between exposure to PBDE and thyroid dysfunction. The increase of total PBDEs was significantly correlated with the increase of FT4 and T4 levels and decreased TSH, T3, and FT3 levels.

Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is an economical sorbent for removing micropollutants from water, but it generates hazardous dust that is flammable and a respiration hazard. Additionally, the fine particles of PAC can cake and block filters and membranes, complicating its use in continuous processes. In this study, we present a sulfur polymer support for PAC that overcomes these problems. The blend of the sulfur polymer and PAC generates low dust and it does not block filters. The utility of the sorbent is demonstrated in the remediation of water contaminated with perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS)—persistent micropollutants that currently threaten water safety worldwide. Waste dumping sites are considered as significant disposal pathway for waste contaminants including pesticides. In the present study OCPs were analyzed in soils of waste dumping sites of Pakistan. The mean concentrations of OCPs were in the order: ∑DDTs>∑HCHs>∑Endosulfan>∑HCB>Heptachlor. Order of overall ∑OCPs contamination with respect to location was Lahore>Sukkur>Karachi>Kamoki>Faisalabad>Hyderabad>Losar>Gujrat>Peshawar. Distribution of OCPs in solid waste dumping site was mainly influenced by textural classes, input history and pollution source. Soil texture was the dominant factor for retention of OCPs, whereas TOC and black carbon has not significantly impacted the concentrations of OCPs. Diagnostic ratios indicated the historical input, anaerobic degradation pathway and use of technical mixtures of DDTs in majority of waste dumping sites whereas for HCHs recent as well as past usage of technical mixture was prevalent in most of the areas. Regression analysis revealed a weak positive correlation of OCPs with socioeconomic indices (HDI, Population, waste generation) which is linked with history of use of these contaminants in the respective areas. Forecasted waste generation quantity for the year 2026 showed that waste generation amount will get doubled by the year 2026 suggesting the need properly designed waste management system.

With improving healthcare and an aging population, the consumption of human pharmaceuticals in China has been increasing dramatically. Environmental risks posed by many active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are still unknown. This study used a spatially explicit dilution-factor methodology to model predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) of 11 human-use APIs in surface water for a preliminary environmental risk assessment (ERA). Median PECs in surface water across China range between 0.01 and 8.0 × 103 ng/L for the different APIs, under a moderate patient use scenario. Higher environmental risks of APIs in surface water are in regions with high water stress, e.g., northern China. Levonorgestrel, estradiol, ethinyl estradiol and abiraterone acetate were predicted to potentially pose a high or moderate environmental risk in China if consumption levels reach those in Europe. Relative risks of these four APIs have the potential to be among those chemicals with the highest impact on surface water in China when compared to the risks associated with other regulated chemicals, including triclosan and some standard water quality parameters including BOD5 (5-day biological oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand), Cu, Zn, and Hg and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate. This method could support the regulation of this category of chemicals and risk mitigation strategies in China.

A porous silicon rugate filter (pSiRF) insulin biosensor has been constructed and systematically optimised by investigating the effects of specific experimental parameters. The pSiRF biosensor is based on an optical sensing platform using interferometric reflectance spectroscopy (IRS) to monitor insulin binding to a surface-anchored insulin binding aptamer (IBA) within the pores. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal fabrication to elicit the maximum sensor response, lowest limit of detection (LOD) and fastest response time. Thermal hydrosilylation with undecylenic acid was used as a base surface modification, with IBA attached through formation of an amide bond. The following pSiRF fabrication conditions were investigated; porous film thickness and IBA concentration in the conjugation solution. The effect of solution flow speed over the pSiRF during insulin biosensing was also investigated in an effort to improve the performance. The optimised pSiRF biosensor was successfully applied for the detection of insulin secreted from human islets on stimulation with glucose.Finally, as a proof of concept, insulin sensing in the presence of human islets on the pSiRF surface was performedto demonstrate the robust performance of the biosensor and the potential for in-situ insulin biosensing. The widespread uptake and use of emissive metal ion complexes for investigating cellular structure, composition and function, is evidence of the effectiveness and vast potential for this type of imaging probe. Metal ion complexes provide significant advantages over their organic fluorophore counterparts, including long emission lifetime, resistance to photobleaching and the capacity to readily modify their peripheral chemistry to target specific organelles, signalling pathways and individual molecules. This review will discuss recent progress in the development and use of metal ion complexes, specifically for studying metabolic diseases at the cellular level. Advanced metal ion complexes for organelle imaging and the detection of biorelevant species, to elaborate complexes for understanding cellular mechanisms and recent therapeutic applications will be reviewed. To align with the special issue, Coordination Chemistry Reviews: Coordination Chemistry in Australia, the work of Australian researchers actively engaged in this field is featured prominently, along with key developments from the global research community. Functionalized nanoparticles have played a major role in the field of targeted therapy, owing to their ability to control the release and for the selective delivery of entrapped materials to tumours. In this work, we described the loading capacity and in vitro release kinetics of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), functionalized with Poly-L-Histidine and Tamoxifen. The model drug Doxorubicin (DOX) was successfully encapsulated into MSN-based systems, using the technique of solvent immersion. A post-surface grafting loading method was investigated on functionalized systems, with DOX loading content determined using HPLC. Dialysis bag diffusion was employed to investigate the release kinetics of DOX-loaded-systems at pH 7.4 and 5. The amount of DOX released from native MSNs systems over a 72 h period at pH 5 was approximately 40%, and at pH 7.4 ≈ 30%. A moderate pH dependent release behaviour was observed with both our functionalized systems: DOX@MSN-PLH and DOX@MSN-PLH-TAM, with approximately 5% of DOX released from DOX@MSN-PLH-TAM at pH 7.4 and about 9% released at pH 7.4 over 72 h. The maximal cumulated release of DOX molecules from DOX@MSN-PLH after 72 h was ≈ 18% at pH 7.4 and ≈ 23% at pH 5, respectively. The outcome of this work offers a promising contribution towards building future stimuli-responsive nano-drug delivery systems.

Mannose-oligosaccharide (MOS) pre-biotics are widely deployed in animal agriculture as immunomodulators as well as to enhance growth and gut health. Their mode of action is thought to be mediated through their impact on host microbial communities and associated metabolism. Bio-MOS is a commercially available pre-biotic currently used in the agri-feed industry. To assay Bio-MOS for potential use as a pre-biotic growth promotor in salmonid aquaculture, we modified an established Atlantic salmonin vitrogut model, SalmoSim, to evaluate its impact on host microbial communities. In biological triplicate, microbial communities were stabilised in SalmoSim followed by twenty-day exposure to the pre-biotic and then an eight day ‘wash out’ period. Exposure the MOS resulted in a significant increase in formate (p=0.001), propionate (p=0.037) and isovalerate (p=0.024) levels, correlated with increased abundances of several principally anaerobic microbial genera (Fusobacteria, Agarivorans, Pseudoalteromonas, Myroides). 16S rDNA sequencing confirmed a significant shift in microbial community composition in response to supplementation. In conjunction with previousin vivostudies linking enhanced VFA production alongside MOS supplementation to host growth and performance, our data suggest that Bio-MOS may be of value in salmonid production. Furthermore, our data highlight the potential role ofin vitrogut models to augmentin vivotrials of microbiome modulators.

Industrial development has brought China both opportunities and challenges since the reform and opening up in 1978. Spatial and temporal analysis showed that rapid industrialization has made eastern China under a more serious pollution stress. The most serious effects of industrial pollution were reflected in aquatic and soil ecosystem degradation, and damage can be observed from species, population, and community to ecosystem level. Public consciousness about contaminated sites rose from 2004 leading to greater efforts in ecological remediation, monitoring, and risk governance. Considerable efforts are still needed in expanding the extent and breadth of monitoring to explore where the greatest ecological risks lie and how to control them. Ecology of industrial pollution has become a popular discipline in China and will be further developed to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Future research for a better ecological risk management should be focused on multi-media transfer and effects of mixed pollutants, mechanisms for clean energy and material flow, and integration of ecological risk with human health risk.

The Buchwald–Hartwig cross-coupling reaction between 4-methylumbelliferone-derived nonaflates with amides, carbamates, and sulfonamides is described. A wide variety of N-substituted 7-amino coumarin analogues was prepared in good to excellent yields. The photophysical properties of aqueous-soluble derivatives were determined, and they displayed auxochrome-based variations. Gram-scale synthesis provided an acrylamide analogue, which was used to fabricate a fluorescent poly(2-hydroxylethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) hydrogel that was resistant to leaching in ultrapure H2O. We envisage that our reported protocol to access 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin derivatives will find use toward the development of new fluorescent coumarin-based probes by researchers in the field. usc Refereed/Peer-reviewed

To date limited information's are available concerning unintentional productions, screening, profiling, and health risks of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in ambient environment and occupational environment. Literature reveals that dust is a neglected environmental matrix never measured for PCNs. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the concentrations and health risks of PCNs in indoor dust, air, and blood of major e-waste recycling hubs in Pakistan. Indoor air (n = 125), dust (n = 250), and serum (n = 250) samples were collected from five major e-waste hubs and their vicinity to measure 39 PCN congeners using GC-ECNI-MS. ∑ 39PCN concentrations in indoor air, dust, and serum (worker > resident > children) samples ranged from 7.0 to 9583 pg/m 3, from 0.25 to 697 ng/g, and from 0.15 to 401 pg/g lipid weight, respectively. Predominant PCN congeners in indoor air and dust were tri- and tetra-CNs, while tetra- and penta-CNs were dominant in human serum samples. The higher PCNs contribution was recorded at the recycling units, while the lower was observed at the shops of the major e-waste hubs. Higher contribution of combustion origin CNs in air, dust and human samples showed combustion sources at the major e-waste hubs, while Halowax and Aroclor based technical mixture showed minor contribution in these samples. Mean toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations of PCNs were 2.79E +00 pg-TEQ/m 3, 1.60E −02 ng-TEQ/g, 8.11E −01 pg-TEQ/g, 7.14E −01 pg-TEQ/g, and 6.37E −01 pg-TEQ/g for indoor air, dust, and serum samples from workers, residents, and children, respectively. In our study, CNs- 66/67 and −73 in indoor air, dust, and human serum were the great contributors to total TEQ concentrations of PCNs. This first base line data directs government and agencies to implement rules, regulation to avoid negative health outcomes and suggests further awareness in regard of provision of proper knowledge to the target population. Due to lack of data on production, screening, and profiling of PCNs, this is the first study to investigate concentrations of PCNs in indoor dust, air, and blood serum at the major e-waste recycling hubs in Pakistan where crude recycling methods were common and the potential health risks to human via its non-dietary pathways exposure would experience. This study results identified that Tri-to penta-CNs were dominant in the environmental samples and showed that higher PCNs contribution in the environmental samples was recorded by Combustion based activities as compared to technical mixture based CNs.

Organic contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and chlorinated paraffins (CPs)) and heavy metals and metalloids (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Zn) were analysed in surface soil samples from the Agbogbloshie e-waste processing and dumping site in Accra (Ghana). In order to identify which of the pollutants are likely to be linked specifically to handling of e-waste, samples were also collected from the Kingtom general waste site in Freetown (Sierra Leone). The results were compared using principal component analyses (PCA). PBDE congeners found in technical octa-BDE mixtures, highly chlorinated PCBs and several heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, Ag and Hg) showed elevated concentrations in the soils that are likely due to contamination by e-waste. PCAs associated those compounds with pyrogenic PAHs, suggesting that burning of e-waste, a common practice to isolate valuable metals, may cause this contamination. Moreover, other contamination pathways, especially incorporation of waste fragments into the soil, also appeared to play an important role in determining concentrations of some of the pollutants in the soil. Concentrations of several of these compounds were extremely high (especially PBDEs, heavy metals and SCCPs) and in some cases exceeded action guideline levels for soil. This indicates that exposure to these contaminants via the soil alone is potentially harmful to the recyclers and their families living on waste sites. Many organic contaminants and other exposure pathways such as inhalation are not yet included in such guidelines but may also be significant, given that deposition from the air following waste burning was identified as a major pollutant source.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were not widely manufactured or used in China before they became the subject of international bans on production. Recent work has shown that they have reached China associated with imported wastes and that there are considerable unintentional sources of PCBs that have only recently been identified. As such, it was hypothesized that the source inventory and profile of PCBs may be different or unique in China, compared to countries where they were widely used and which have been widely studied. For the first time in this study, we undertook a complete analysis of 209 PCB congeners and assessed the contribution of unintentionally produced PCBs (UP-PCBs) in the atmosphere of China, using polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) deployed across a wide range of Chinese locations. ∑209 PCBs ranged from 9 to 6856 pg/m3 (median: 95 pg/m3) during three deployments in 2016-2017. PCB 11 was one of the most detected congeners, contributing 33 ± 19% to ∑209 PCBs. The main sources to airborne PCBs in China were estimated and ranked as pigment/painting (34%), metallurgical industry/combustion (31%), e-waste (23%), and petrochemical/plastic industry (6%). For typical Aroclor-PCBs, e-waste sources were dominated (>50%). Results from our study indicate that UP-PCBs have become the controlling source in the atmosphere of China, and an effective control strategy is urgently needed to mitigate emissions from multiple industrial sources.

The potentially high release of estrogens to surface waters due to high population density and local livestock production in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region may pose adverse effects on reproductive systems of aquatic organisms. This study found that total measured concentrations of estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and diethylstilbestrol (DES) were 468 ± 27 ng/L in treated wastewater and 219 ± 23 ng/L in river waters in this region. E2, E3 and EE2 were the predominant estrogens in river waters. The restriction of DES for human use should have been enforced, however concentrations of DES were relatively high compared to other studies. Haihe and Yongdingxin Rivers delivered approximately 1.8 tonnes of estrogens to the Bohai Bay annually. Concentrations of individual estrogens were significantly higher in river waters in the dry season, however, mass loadings were significantly higher in the wet season. The average E2-equivalent concentrations reached 1.2 ± 0.2 and 0.64 ± 0.08 μg-E2/L following long-term and short-term exposure estimates, respectively, in river waters with an EE2 contribution of over 90 %. This could give rise to high risks to fish. Estrogens in river waters largely derived from human excretion. Field studies on estrogenic effects on fish reproductive systems are required locally considering high estrogen contamination levels.

This study was designed to monitor organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in riverine water of Lesser Himalaya along the altitude. Further, the sediment-water partitioning employing organic carbon and black carbon models were assessed. Results revealed higher water levels of organochlorine pesticides (0.07-41.4 ng L-1) and polychlorinated biphenyls (0.671-84.5 ng L-1) in Lesser Himalayan Region (LHR) of Pakistan. Spatially, elevated levels were observed in the altitudinal zone (737-975 masl) which is influenced by anthropogenic and industrial activities. Sediment-water partitioning of OCPs and PCBs were deduced using field data by employing one-carbon (fOCKOC) and two-carbon Freundlich models (fOCKOC + fBCKBCCWnF-1). Results suggested improved measured vs predicted model concentrations when black carbon was induced in the model and suggested adsorption to be the dominant mechanism in phase partitioning of organochlorines in LHR.

Water pollution are among the most critical problems in China and emerging contaminants in surface water have attracted rising attentions in recent years. There is great interest in China's future environmental quality as the national government has committed to a major action plan to improve surface water quality. This study presents methodologies to rank the importance of socioeconomic and environmental drivers to the chemical concentration in surface water during 2000–2030. A case study is conducted on triclosan, a home and personal care product (HPCP) ingredient. Different economic and discharge flow scenarios are considered. Urbanization and wastewater treatment connection rates in rural and urban areas are collected or projected for 2000–2030 for counties across China. The estimated usage increases from ca. 86 to 340 t. However, emissions decreases from 76 to 52 t during 2000–2030 under a modelled Organisation for Economic Co-operation (OECD) economic scenario because of the urbanization, migration and development of wastewater treatment plants/facilities (WWTPs). The estimated national median concentration of triclosan ranges 1.5–8.2 ng/L during 2000–2030 for different scenarios. It peaks in 2009 under the OECD and three of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), A2, B1 and B2 economic scenarios, but in 2025 under A1 economic scenario. Population distribution and surface water discharge flow rates are ranked as the top two drivers to triclosan levels in surface water over the 30 years. The development of urban WWTPs was the most important driver during 2000–2010 and the development of rural works is projected to be the most important in 2011–2030. Projections suggest discharges of ingredients in HPCPs - controlled by economic growth - should be balanced by the major expenditure programme on wastewater treatment in China. Black carbon and total organic carbon (TOC) along with organochlorines (OCs) were analyzed in soils from four sampling zones of Lesser Himalayan Region based on source proximity/anthropogenic influences along the altitude. CTO-375 method was used for BC analysis while OCs were analyzed by GC-MS/MS system. BC and TOC ranged between 0.16-1.77 and 6.8-41.3 mg g-1 while those of OCPs and PCBs ranged between 0.69 and 5.77 and 0.12-2.55 ng g-1, respectively. ∑DDTs were the dominant (87.9%) among OCPs while tri- and tetra- (65.5%) homologue groups among PCBs. Hexa-PCBs, however also showed higher contribution (20.4%) in the region. Source diagnostic ratios of DDE + DDD/DDT (0.1-1.53) indicated both fresh and old input while α-HCH/γ-HCH (0.19-2.49) showed presence of lindane in the region. Higher concentration of OCs were observed in Zone C at altitudinal range of 737-975 masl that are close to the human influences and potential sources of POPs. The results of linear regression analysis revealed potential input of BC in soil distribution of OC concentrations in the region.

Due to influence of wind patterns (monsoon and westerlies) and anthropogenic activities, lower stretch of Himalaya is at direct exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Current study was designed to monitor atmospheric concentrations of long lived organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) using polyurethane passive air sampling in the Lesser Himalayan Region (LHR) of Pakistan. Levels of ∑HCHs, ∑DDTs and ∑PCBs were observed in a range between 3 and 210 pg m−3, 0.75–67.1 pg m−3 and 8.49–458 pg m−3, respectively. Though, air mass trajectories over LHR indicated long range transport as atmospheric source input which was further explained by Clausius–Clapeyron plots between ln P and inverse of temperature (1000/T; K) where all OCPs and most of the PCBs have shown insignificant relationship (r2 = 5E-06–0.41; p-value = 0.06–0.995). However, local source emissions and valley transport may also implicate based on spatial distribution and altitudinal patterns. Additionally, soil-air partitioning of organochlorines was assessed using octanol-air partition (KOA) and black carbon-air partition (KBC) based models. Regression results indicated combined influence of both organic matter (r2 = 0.298–0.85) and black carbon (r2 = 0.31–0.86) via absorption and adsorption, respectively in soil-air partitioning of OCs in LHR. This paper sheds light on the atmospheric concentrations of OCs and help in better understanding of the processes involved in fate and transport of organic pollutants in Himalayan region. Further investigations are required to understand the role of carbon moieties in fate and transport of other groups of organic pollutants at higher altitudes of Himalayan region.

Widespread use of organic chemicals in household and personal care products (HPCPs) and their discharge into aquatic systems means reliable, robust techniques to monitor environmental concentrations are needed. The passive sampling approach of diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) is developed here and demonstrated to provide in situ quantitative and time-weighted average (TWA) measurement of these chemicals in waters. The novel technique is developed for HPCPs, including preservatives, antioxidants and disinfectants, by evaluating the performance of different binding agents. Ultrasonic extraction of binding gels in acetonitrile gave good and consistent recoveries for all test chemicals. Uptake by DGT with HLB (hydrophilic lipophilic-balanced) as the binding agent was relatively independent of pH (3.5-9.5), ionic strength (0.001-0.1 M) and dissolved organic matter (0-20 mg L-1), making it suitable for applications across a wide range of environments. Deployment time and diffusion layer thickness dependence experiments confirmed DGT accumulated chemicals masses are consistent with theoretical predictions. The technique was further tested and applied in the influent and effluent of a wastewater treatment plant. Results were compared with conventional grab-sampling and 24-h-composited samples from autosamplers. DGT provided TWA concentrations over up to 18 days deployment, with minimal effects from biofouling or the diffusive boundary layer. The field application demonstrated advantages of the DGT technique: it gives in situ analyte preconcentration in a simple matrix, with more quantitative measurement of the HPCP analytes.

Organohalogens contain important groups of persistent organic pollutants that have a special focus owing to their adverse effects. Due to long-range atmospheric transport, these chemicals could reach to higher altitude cold regions where they become deposited and trapped on surface media, i.e., soil, water, sediments, and snow. Intriguingly, another pollutant, black carbon (BC) shows a strong association with these organohalogens and could sturdily affect the environmental distribution of these contaminants. It is implicated that BC can significantly alter not only the behavior of organohalogens in the environment but its presence could also lead to an increase in temperature which may result in the rerelease of the trapped organohalogens in these regions. Hence, theories of “glacier hypothesis” and “forest filter effect” could be better explained.

Some organic pollutants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) have been banned from production and use in the UK for > 30 years but due to their toxicity and persistence are still of concern. However, due to their hydrophobicity they are present at very low concentrations and are difficult to measure in water, and so other matrices need to be sampled in order to best assess contamination. This study measured concentrations of ΣICES 7 PCBs (PCB congeners 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180) and Σ6 PBDEs (PBDE congeners 28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154) and HCB in both bed-sediments and wild roach (a common pelagic fish) in the Thames Basin. The highest sediment concentrations were detected in an urbanised tributary of the Thames, The Cut at Bracknell (HCB: 0.03–0.40 μg/kg dw; ICES 7 PCBs: 4.83–7.42 μg/kg dw; 6 BDEs: 5.82–23.10 μg/kg dw). When concentrations were expressed on a dry weight basis, the fish were much more contaminated than the sediments, but when sediment concentrations were normalised to organic carbon concentration they were comparable to the fish lipid normalised concentrations. Thus, despite the variability in the system, both sediments and wild fish can be considered suitable for representing the level of POPs contamination of the river system given sufficient sample numbers.

Long-term air monitoring datasets are needed for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to assess the effectiveness of source abatement measures and the factors controlling ambient levels. The Toxic Organic Micro Pollutants (TOMPs) Network, which has operated since 1991, collects ambient air samples at six sites across England and Scotland, using high-volume active air samplers. The network provides long-term ambient air trend data for a range of POPs at both urban and rural locations. Data from the network provides the UK Government, regulators and researchers with valuable information on emission/source controls and on the effectiveness of international chemicals regulation such as the Stockholm Convention and UN/ECE Protocol on POPs. The target chemicals of TOMPs have been polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and, since 2010, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The continuous monitoring of these compounds demonstrates the constant decline in UK air concentrations over the last two decades, with average clearance rates for PCDD/Fs in urban locations of 5.1 years and for PCBs across all sites 6.6 years. No significant declines in rural locations for PCDD/Fs have been observed. There is a strong observable link between the declining ambient air concentrations and the emission reductions estimated in the annually produced National Atmospheric Emission Inventory (NAEI) dataset. These findings clearly demonstrate the unique strengths of long-term consistent datasets for the evaluation of the success of chemical regulation and control.

A robust and accurate chemical sensor for dissolved iron has been developed, based on highly fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs). This work describes the construction of a GQD embedded hydrogel that displays strong fluorescence emission from the bulk structure. The hydrogel is made from poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) and crosslinked by ethylene glycol dimethacrylate to form a water permeable, flexible and transparent material. Polymerisation in the presence of the GQDs physically entraps the fluorescent nanoparticles within the hydrogel. The fluorescence properties of the GQD-pHEMA hydrogels have been thoroughly characterised, including by confocal microscopy in the first reported use of this technique for a GQD composite material. Sensing of dissolved Fe(III) by the GQD-pHEMA hydrogels has been demonstrated, whereby the Fe(III) quenches the GQDs fluorescence emission. Due to the favorable properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), there has been a rapid development of sensors, devices, and composite materials, which incorporate this 0D nanomaterial. GQDs provide a means to instill superior optical, electronic, mechanical, and adsorptive properties to various platforms and have found use as biosensors, photovoltaic devices, polymer composites,and drug delivery vehicles. One of the key factors to successfully integrating GQD technology is the intelligent choice of synthetic chemical pathways to fabricate, modify, and instill functionality in the developed platform. GQDs are decorated with a variety of functional groups that are amenable to traditional synthetic chemistry transformations; however, the technology for post-synthetic modifications is only in its infancy. Herein, a comprehensive analysis of the chemistry available for modifying GQDs is provided; starting from methods for GQD fabrication and synthetic chemical pathways for producing functional GQDs, to the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges of specific chemistries,and finally techniques for the appropriate characterization of these functional materials. This review is meant for researchers considering entering the GQD field, as well as those more experienced, providing a practical guide on how to prepare, modify, and characterize GQDs for a broad range of applications. Aim: To find out how, when, and why back pain causes sleep disturbance. This is the data analysis phase following a series of four literature reviews, which seek to find out whether different types of sleep disturbance can be caused by different sorts of back pain.Method: Discriminant analyses have been performed on 8 indices, 7 diagnoses, and 114 variables derived from a database of 88 clinical items collected prospectively from 1234 consultations for low back pain.Results: Difficulty getting off to sleep was essentially found to be an indication of back pain severity as shown by the correlations with PAIN index B (0.56), PAIN index A (0.47), pain visual analog scale (0.43), straight leg raising (SLR) ipselateral pain (0.40), SLR range (elevation −0.31), disability (ability −0.25), analgesic consumption yesterday (0.25), and the extent of pain down the leg (0.25).However, difficulty getting off to sleep showed some ‘non-severity’ aspects. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have become a recognized concern due to their mobility, persistence, ubiquity and health hazards in the environment. In this study, ten types of vegetables and three types of grain crops were collected in two open-air fields with different distances (0.3 km, 10 km) from a mega fluorochemical industrial park (FIP), China. Bioaccumulation characteristics of PFASs in light of crop types and organs were explored, followed by analyzing human exposure and risks to local residents with different age groups and dietary habits. Elevated levels of ∑PFASs were found nearby the FIP ranging from 79.9 ng/g to 200 ng/g in soils and from 58.8 ng/g to 8085 ng/g in crops. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the predominant PFAS component in soil; while shorter-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), especially perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), were the major PFAS contaminants in multiple crops, resulting from their bioaccumulation preference. Depending on the crop types, the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of ∑PFASs for edible parts varied from 0.36 to 48.0, and the highest values were found in shoot vegetables compared with those in fruit vegetables, flower vegetables, root vegetables and grain crops. For typical grains, the BAFs of ∑PFASs decreased in the order of soybean (Glycine max (Linn.) Merr.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and corn (Zea mays L.), possibly related to their protein and lipid content. Among specific organs in the whole plants, leaves exhibited the highest BAFs of ∑PFASs compared with corresponding roots, stems, husks or grains. With increasing carbon chain lengths of individual PFCAs (C4-C8), the logarithm of their BAFs for edible parts of various crops showed a linear decrease (0.1–1.16 log decrease per CF2 unit), and the largest decrease was observed in grains. Human exposure to PFOA via the consumption of contaminated crops represents a health risk for local residents, especially for low-age consumers or urban consumers with higher vegetable diet. The quantitative study of urban-rural gradients for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is extremely important to understand the behavior of POPs as well as for ecological risk assessment and management. In this study, a practical urban-rural gradient model (URGM) was developed using atmospheric point source diffusion combined with a fugacity approach to test potential mathematical relationships among urban and rural soils. The mean value of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for urban soils (0–2-km sites) was 570.80 ng/g, and was approximately 3.5 times higher than rural soils (30–50 km sites). Significant linear correlations were found between the amounts of PAHs in the surface soil and the city population and between the soil concentration and artificial surface area. Urban-rural PAH concentrations were simulated by the URGM and calibrated by city population and land-cover data, with average relative errors of 12.84%. The results showed that the URGM was suitable for simulating urban-rural PAH concentrations at a regional scale. The combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and coal was the main source of soil PAHs in the study area, and the characteristic ratios of PAHs indicated a transition trend from pyrogenic to petrogenic sources along the urban-rural transects. This study thus provides a combined method for quantifying urban-rural gradients of PAHs and can thereby promote quantitative research on coupling among land cover, socio-economic data, and POP concentrations.

The occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment is a global concern. In this study, we employed two different passive samplers Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) and Chemcatcher for in situ measurement of 8 phenolic EDCs in the East River of the Pearl River system over one-year. These data were assessed alongside results from traditional grab sampling. Six chemicals (4tOP, 4NP, BPA, E1, EE2 and DES) were regularly detected in the water samples, of which the three phenols (i.e. 4tOP, 4NP and BPA) were in all samples and at high concentrations (0.4–1040 ng/L for 4tOP, 2.6–58500 ng/L for NP and 11.4–123300 ng/L for BPA). Fewer target chemicals were detected in both passive samplers, with only 4tOP, 4NP and BPA found in most samplers; E1 and DES were occasionally measurable above detection limits. The higher (by about a factor of 2–3) measurements provided by DGT compared to Chemcatcher could be attributed to the effect of the diffusive boundary layer on Chemcatcher uptake or the strong adsorption of target chemicals on the Chemcatcher PES filter. The temporal trends of EDC monthly loadings indicated that they were from different sources and that WWTPs were not effective in EDC removal and/or there was still some untreated wastewater discharged into the rivers.

Ecological risk assessment (ERA) has been widely applied in characterizing the risk of chemicals to organisms and ecosystems. The paucity of toxicity data on local biota living in the different compartments of an ecosystem and the absence of a suitable methodology for multi-compartment spatial risk assessment at the regional scale has held back this field. The major objective of this study was to develop a methodology to quantify and distinguish the spatial distribution of risk to ecosystems at a regional scale. A framework for regional multi-compartment probabilistic ecological risk assessment (RMPERA) was constructed and corroborated using a bioassay of a local species. The risks from cadmium (Cd) pollution in river water, river sediment, coastal water, coastal surface sediment and soil in northern Bohai Rim were examined. The results indicated that the local organisms in soil, river, coastal water, and coastal sediment were affected by Cd. The greatest impacts from Cd were identified in the Tianjin and Huludao areas. The overall multi-compartment risk was 31.4% in the region. The methodology provides a new approach for regional multi-compartment ecological risk assessment. One of the biggest challenges faced by Sierra Leonean farmers is pest control. Birds, rodents, insects, crustaceans and other organisms can drastically reduce yields. In order to prevent these organisms from destroying their crop, farmers use pesticides. However there are reports that these chemicals are being misused and such misuse is having a negative impact on the environment and the health of the farmers.This research study aimed to investigate the use of pesticides in rice fields and its potential effects on the environment and on the farmers of Sierra Leone. Five hundred farmers and one hundred health workers across the country were interviewed. Fifty focus group discussions were also completed. Field observations were also undertaken to see how farmers apply pesticides to their farms and the possible threats these methods have on human health and the environment. It is clear that a wide range of pesticides are used by rice farmers in Sierra Leone with 60% of the pesticides used entering the country illegally. Most farmers have no knowledge about the safe handling of pesticides as 71% of them have never received any form of training. The pesticides kill both target and non-target organisms some of which enter the food chain.Cases of health problems such as nausea, respiratory disorders and blurred vision investigated in this research are significantly higher among farmers who use pesticides than those who do not use pesticides. Cases of pesticide intoxication are not investigated by health workers but results obtained from interviews with them also indicated that cases of pesticides related symptoms are significantly higher in environments where pesticides are used than those in which pesticides are not used. Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) can be released to water bodies during manufacturing and application of PFAA-containing products. In this study, the contamination pattern, attenuation dynamics, sources, pathways, and risk zoning of PFAAs in surface and ground water was examined within a 10 km radius from a mega-fluorochemical industrial park (FIP). Among 12 detected PFAAs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) dominated, followed by shorter-chained perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs). PFAA-containing waste was discharged from the FIP, with levels reaching 1.86 mg/L in the nearby rivers flowing to the Bohai sea together with up to 273 μg/L in the local groundwater in the catchment. These levels constitute a human health risks for PFOA and other shorter-chained PFCAs within this location. The concentrations of ∑PFAAs in surface water strongly correlated with the local groundwater. The dominant pollution pathways of PFAAs included (i) discharge into surface water then to groundwater through seepage, and (ii) atmospheric deposition from the FIP, followed by infiltration to groundwater. As the distance increased from the source, PFAAs levels in groundwater showed a sharp initial decrease followed by a gentle decline. The contamination signal from the FIP site on PFAAs in groundwater existed within a radius of 4 km, and at least 3 km from the polluted Dongzhulong River. The major controlling factor in PFAA attenuation processes was likely to be dilution together with dispersion and adsorption to aquifer solids. The relative abundance of PFOA (C8) declined while those of shorter-chained PFCAs (C4–C6) increased during surface water seepage and further dispersion in groundwater.
