Abstract: Data from the NA31 experiment at CERN have been used for a search for the decay mode K L → π 0 π 0 γ . After all cuts, three events remain in the signal region with an estimated background of 2.2 ± 0.9 events. The upper limit for the branching ratio of K L → π 0 π 0 γ is 5.6 × 10 −6 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We present a new determination of the Ds decay constant, f_{Ds} using 5 million continuum charm events obtained with the CLEO II detector. Our value is derived from our new measured ratio of widths for Ds -> mu nu/Ds -> phi pi of 0.173+/- 0.021 +/- 0.031. Taking the branching ratio for Ds -> phi pi as (3.6 +/- 0.9)% from the PDG, we extract f_{Ds} = (280 +/- 17 +/- 25 +/- 34){MeV}. Abstract: Using 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data taken with the CLEO II detector, the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+\to\pi^0\ell^+\nu$ measured relative to the Cabibbo favored decay $D^+\to\bar{K^0}\ell^+\nu$ is found to be $0.046\pm 0.014\pm 0.017$. Using $V_{cs}$ and $V_{cd}$ from unitarity constraints, we determine $| f_+^{\pi}(0)/f_+^K(0)|^2=0.9\pm 0.3\pm 0.3$ We also present a 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $D^+ \to \eta e^+\nu_e$ relative to that for $D^+ \to \pi^0 e^+\nu_e$ of 1.5.

Abstract: Using the CLEO~II detector, we have measured the differential cross sections for exclusive two-photon production of light pseudoscalar mesons $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$. From our measurements we have obtained the form factors associated with the electromagnetic transitions $\gamma^*\gamma$ $\to$ meson. We have measured these form factors in the momentum transfer ranges from 1.5 to 9, 20, and 30 GeV$^2$ for $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$, respectively, and have made comparisons to various theoretical predictions., Comment: 30 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

No evidence for a signal is found in 4.77fb−1 of data and a 95% C.L. upper limit on [τγγBπ+π−]fJ(2220) of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)→π+π− in radiative J/Ψ decay and the recent CLEO result for [τγγBK0SK0S]fJ(2220), a 95% C.L. lower limit on the stickiness of 102 is obtained. This result for the stickiness provides further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220). © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report the first observation of B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X transitions with high momentum {eta}{sup {prime}} mesons. We observe 39.0{plus_minus}11.6 B decay events with 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c , the high momentum region where background from b{r_arrow}c processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to b{r_arrow}sg{sup {asterisk}} transitions. Given that interpretation, we find B(B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X{sub s} )=[6.2{plus_minus}1.6(stat){plus_minus} 1.3(syst){sup +0.0}{sub {minus}1.5} (bkg)]{times}10{sup {minus}4} for 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c . {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society }

Abstract: We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including $\omega$ or $\phi$ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of $6.6 \times 10^6$ B mesons we observe a signal for the $\omega K^+$ final state, and measure a branching fraction of B($B^+ \to \omega K^+$) = 1.5 +0.7 -0.6 +-0.2 $\times 10^{-5}$. We also observe some evidence for the $\phi K^*$ final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity for studies of theoretical models and physical parameters.

Abstract: We have observed the decay ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+}$, using $3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find the ratio of branching fractions $R\ensuremath{\equiv}B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+})/B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.055\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$.

Abstract: We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract: We have observed a signal for the decay D^(*+)→D^+γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D^(*+)→D^+γ)/B(D^(*+)→D^+π^0) = 0.055±0.014±0.010 we find B(D^(*+)→D^+γ) = 0.017±0.004±0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D^(*+) branching fractions.

Abstract: Using 3.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at the $\Upsilon$(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, corresponding to 3.3 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, we have searched for the color-suppressed $B$ hadronic decay processes: $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 (D^{*0}) X^0$, where $X^0$ is a light neutral meson $\pi^0$, $\rho^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$ or $\omega$. No obvious signal is observed. We set 90 % C.L. upper limits on these modes, varying from $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^0$ to $1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0} \eta'$.

Abstract: The CLEO detector is undergoing major improvements in conjunction with a high luminosity upgrade of the CESR e+e− collider. A novel element is a state of the art particle identification system, based on a proximity focused Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector. This detector will provide an excellent hadron identification at all the momenta relevant to the study of the decays of B mesons produced at the ϒ(4S) resonance. Some features unique to our design will be discussed together with some results achieved on individual components.

Abstract: In 1998 the CLEO detector collecting data at the CESR storage ring will be upgraded. A new Data Acquisition system will be installed during the upgrade to record triggers up to 1000 Hz with a mean data size of 25 KBytes per event. In this largely improved system, we will exploit the new CBLT VME transfer mode (defined by VIPA) to readout crates with about 15 9U digitization cards. Secondly, we decided to design and build a FASTBUS-VME interface card with the dimension of a FASTBUS card, and a 2-slot VME backplane inside. With this interface, all hardware and software will be homogeneous at this point of the DAQ data pipeline. It will also perform additional sparsification and channel tagging “on the fly”. This new system will be monitored and controlled by a networked system of CPUs. To achieve a dynamical and simple connection method between the various processes we chose the CORBA standard communication method. The port to PowerPC based VME boards was done in close collaboration with Visigenic Corp.

Abstract: In a sample of 6.6×10^6 produced B mesons we have observed decays B→η′K, with branching fractions B(B^+→η′K^+) = (6.5_(-1.4)^(+1.5)±0.9)×10^(-5) and B(B^0→η′K^0) = (4.7_(-2.0)^(+2.7)±0.9)×10^(-5). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B→η′K signal.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D^0→K^-π^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain B →D^(*+)Xl^-ν , D^(*+)→D^0π^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D^(*+) are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined B(D^0→K^-π^+) = [3.81±0.15(stat)±0.16(syst)]%.

Abstract: We have searched for the decay $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}(2536)X$ and measured an upper limit for the inclusive branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}X)l0.96%$ at the 90% confidence level. This limit is small compared with the total expected $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}^{(*)}{D}^{(*)}\mathrm{KX}$ rate. Assuming factorization, the ${D}_{s1}^{+}$ decay constant is constrained to be ${f}_{{D}_{s1}^{+}}$114 MeV at the 90% confidence level, at least 2.5 times smaller than that of ${D}_{s}^{+}$.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report new measurements of the branching fractions for the decays of the charmed baryon {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} into pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}, p{bar K}{sup 0}, p{bar K}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, and p{bar K}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}, all measured relative to pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}. The relative branching fractions are 0.67{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.11,0.46{plus_minus}0.02{plus_minus}0.04,0.52 {plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.05, and 0.66{plus_minus}0.05{plus_minus}0.07, respectively. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The decays ϒ(4S)→BB , followed by B→D^*π and D^*→Dπ, permit reconstruction of all kinematic quantities that describe the sequence without reconstruction of the D, with reasonably low backgrounds. Using an integrated e^+e^- luminosity of 3.1 fb^(-1) accumulated at the ϒ(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, we report measurements of B(B ^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (2.81±0.11±0.21±0.05)×10^(-3) and B(B-→D^*0π^-) = (4.34±0.33±0.34±0.18)×10^(-3).

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R≡σ(e^+e^-→hadrons)/σ(e^+e^-→μ^+μ^-)=3.56±0.01±0.07 at √s=10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of α_s(10.52 GeV)=0.20±0.01±0.06, or α_s(MZ)=0.13±0.005±0.03.

Abstract: The full data set of the NA31 experiment at CERN has been used to analyse the decay mode KOL → e+ e-γγ. A signal of 47 events has been observed with an estimated background of 6.9 events. The total number of kaon decays in the decay volume was determined to be (2.1 ± 0.1stat) · 109. This corresponds to a branching ratio of (8.0 ± 1.5+1.4-1.2)· 10-7. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present the first full angular analysis in the color-suppressed modes B{sup 0}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *0} and B{sup +}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *+}. This leads to a complete determination of the decay amplitudes of these modes including the longitudinal polarization {Gamma}{sub L}/{Gamma}=0.52{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.04 and the P wave component {vert_bar}P{vert_bar}{sup 2}=0.16{plus_minus}0.08{plus_minus}0.04. In addition, we update the branching fractions for B{r_arrow}J/{psi}K and B{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *}. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup + }3{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been studied with the CLEOII detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85{plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.51){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the conserved-vector-current prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0 }{omega}{nu}{sub {tau}} , 2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} , and {pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} . This is the first observation of this {omega} decay mode and the branching fraction is measured to be (1.89{sup +0.74}{sub {minus}0.67}{plus_minus}0.40) {times}10{sup {minus}4} . {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f{sub J}(2220) in its decay to K{sub s}K{sub s} . We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K{sub s}K{sub s} branching fraction, ({Gamma}{sub {gamma}{gamma}}B{sub K{sub s}K{sub s}}){sub f{sub J(2220) }} . We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring CESR, we present the first observation of B mesons decaying into the charmed strange baryons Xi_c0 and Xi_c+. We find 79 +/- 27 Xi_c0 and 125 +/- 28 Xi_c+ candidates from B decays, leading to product branching fractions of BR(Bbar -> Xi_c0 X)BR(Xi_c0 -> Xi- pi+) = (0.144 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.021) x 10^-3 and BR(Bbar -> Xi_c+ X)BR(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = (0.453 +/- 0.096 +0.085-0.065) x 10^-3.

Abstract: We have searched for the rare decay of the eta meson $\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}$ using the CLEO II detector. The $\eta$'s were produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction $B(\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}) < 7.7\times 10^{-5}$. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about $10^{-9}$.

Abstract: A search for the decay of the tau lepton to seven charged pions and one or zero pizero mesons was performed using the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The analysis uses 232.2 fb-1 of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the Y(4S) resonance. We observe 24 events with an expected background of 21.6+-1.3 events. Without evidence for a signal, we calculate an upper limit of BR(tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ (pizero) nu_tau) 4pi- 3pi+ nu_tau and tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ pizero nu_tau.

Abstract: We report new measurements of the differential and total branching ratios for inclusive B decay to D{sup 0}, D{sup +}, and D{sup *+} and the first measurement of the same quantities for inclusive B decay to D{sup *0}. Here B is the mixture of B{sub d} and B{sub u} from {Upsilon}(4S) decay. Furthermore, since more than one charm particle (or antiparticle) of the same kind can be produced in B decay, here {open_quotes}inclusive B branching ratio{close_quotes} is used to mean the average number of charm particles and their antiparticles of a certain species produced in B decay. We obtain the following results (the first error is statistical, the second systematic of this analysis, the third propagated from other measurements): B(B{r_arrow}D{sup 0}X)=(0.636{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0.019{plus_minus}0.0 8), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup +}X)=(0.235{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.024), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X) =(0.247{plus_minus}0.012{plus_minus}0.018{plus_minus}0.018), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(0.239{plus_minus}0.011{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0. 09). The following ratio of branching ratios is not affected by most of the systematic errors: B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X)/ B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(1.03{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.09{plus_minus}0.08). We also report the first measurement of the momentum-dependent D{sup *0} polarization and a new measurement of the D{sup *+} polarization in inclusive B decay. Abstract: We have observed new channels for $\ensuremath{\tau}$ decays with an $\ensuremath{\eta}$ in the final state. We study 3-prong tau decays, using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay modes and 1-prong decays with two ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$'s using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ channel. The measured branching fractions are $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({3.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5}^{+0.6}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}2{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We observe clear evidence for ${f}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ substructure and measure $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{1}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({5.8}_{\ensuremath{-}1.3}^{+1.4}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We have also searched for ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(958)$ production and obtain 90% C.L. upper limits $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l7.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l8.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$.

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of {Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}, making the first observation of {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}. We present the cross section for {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}} as a function of the {gamma}{gamma} center of mass energy and compare it to that predicted by the quark-diquark model. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} annihilation data collected by the CLEOII detector at CESR, we have observed the decay D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow}{omega}{pi}{sup +} . This final state may be produced through the annihilation decay of the D{sup +}{sub s} , or through final state interactions. We find a branching ratio of {Gamma}(D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow}{omega}{pi}{sup +})/{Gamma}(D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow} {eta}{pi}{sup +})=0.16{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0 .03 , where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for lepton flavor violating decays of the {tau} lepton using final states with an electron or a muon and one or two {pi}{sup 0} or {eta} mesons but no neutrinos. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.68 fb{sup {minus}1} . No evidence for signals was found, resulting in much improved limits on the branching fractions for the one-meson modes and the first upper limits for the two-meson modes. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}. For the decay B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}, we observe one candidate signal event, with an expected background of 0.022 {+-} 0.011 events. This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}) = (5.3{sub -3.7}{sup +7.1}(stat) {+-} 1.0(syst)) x 10{sup -4} and an upper limit of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D{sup -}) < 2.2 x 10{sup -3} at the 90% CL. For B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}D{sup {-+}} and B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}D{sup -}, no significant excess of signal above the expected background level is seen, and we calculate the 90% CL upper limits on the branching fractions to be {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}D{sup {-+}}) < 1.8 x 10{sup -3} and B(B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}D{sup -}) < 1.2 x 10{sup -3}.

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R{sub chrg} for the mean charged multiplicity observed in {Upsilon}(1S){r_arrow}gg{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}. We find R{sub chrg}{equivalent_to}{l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}/{l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}=1.04 {plus_minus}0.02(stat){plus_minus}0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for the decays $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in a sample of $2.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays collected with the CLEO II detector. In the muon channel, we observe no candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma})l5.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level. In the electron channel, we observe five candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma})l2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We have measured the spectral shape Michel parameters ρ and η using leptonic decays of the τ, recorded by the CLEO II detector. Assuming e-μ universality in the vectorlike couplings, we find ρeμ = 0.735 ± 0.013 ± 0.008 and ηeμ = -0.015 ± 0.061 ± 0.062, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also present measurements for the parameters for e and μ final states separately.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the magnitude of the {nu}{sub {tau}} helicity from {tau}-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each {tau} undergoes the decay {tau}{r_arrow}h{nu}, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding {vert_bar}{xi}{sub h}{vert_bar} = 1.03{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

37. A CELT and MCST capable VME slave interface

Abstract: We report on the development of a VME slave interface for the CLEO III detector implemented in an ALTERA EPM7256 CPLD. This includes the first implementation of the chained block transfer protocol (CELT) and multi-cast cycles (MCST) as defined by the VME-P task group of VIPA. Within VME64 there is no operation that guarantees efficient readout of large blocks of data that are sparsely distributed among a series of slave modules in a VME crate. This has led the VME-P task group of VIPA to specify protocols that enable a master to address many slaves at a single address. Which slave is to drive the data bus is determined by a token passing mechanism that uses the *IACKOUT, *IACKIN daisy chain. This protocol requires no special features from the master besides conformance to VME64. Non-standard features are restricted to the VME slave interface. The CLEO III detector comprises /spl sim/400,000 electronic channels that have to be digitized, sparsified, and stored within 20 /spl mu/s in order to incur less than 2% dead time at an anticipated trigger rate of 1000 Hz. 95% of these channels are accounted for by only two detector subsystems, the silicon microstrip detector (125,000 channels), and the ring imaging Cerenkov detector (RICH) (230,400 channels). The occupancy after sparsification in either of these two detector subsystems is expected to be less than 1%, resulting in event fragments on the order of 10 KBytes each, spread over 4, and 8 VME crates, respectively. We developed a chip set that sparsifies, tags, and stores the incoming digital data on the data boards, and includes a VME slave interface that implements MCST and CELT protocols. In this paper, we briefly describe this chip set and then discuss the VME slave interface in detail.

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: ${R}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{gg})/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{ggg})=[2.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15(\mathrm{syst})]%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}=233\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)})=0.163\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, or ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{Z})=0.110\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$.

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present new measurements of the branching fractions for D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}K{sup +} and D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}{pi}{sup +}. These results are combined with other CLEO measurements to extract the ratios of isospin amplitudes and phase shifts for D {yields} KK and D {yields} K{pi}.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report evidence of a pair of excited charmed baryons, one decaying into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +} and the other into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}. The doubly charged state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 234.5{plus_minus}1.1{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 17.9{sup +3.8}{sub -3.2}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}, and the neutral state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 232.6{plus_minus}1.0{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 13.0{sup +3.7}{sub -3.0}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}. We interpret these data as evidence of the {Sigma}{sup *++}{sub c} and {Sigma}{sup *0}{sub c}, the spin (3)/(2){sup +} excitations of the {Sigma}{sub c} baryons. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: CLEO has studied $B$ decays to $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, and $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, where $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}eor\ensuremath{\mu}$, by incorporating the missing momentum into full $B$ reconstruction. With the ${B}^{0}$ and ${B}^{+}$ modes combined according to isospin predictions for the relative partial widths, we obtain $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(2.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.5}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic, and the estimated model dependence. We also estimate $|{V}_{\mathrm{ub}}|\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(3.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.2}_{\ensuremath{-}0.4}^{+0.3}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$.

Abstract: We use data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) to search for B{sup +} {yields} h{sup +}h{sup -}h{sup +} (non-resonant) decays, where h{sup {+-}} can be either {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} or p({bar p}). We see no evidence for signals and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (2.8 - 8.9) x 10{sup -5}. If observed, these decays may display CP violating asymmetries.

Abstract: Data from the NA31 experiment at CERN have been used to measure the branching ratio of the double Dalitz decay of the long-lived neutral kaon. Eight events have been found with negligible background. The measured distribution of the angle between the planes of the two e+e--pairs favours a CP=-1 state for the long-lived neutral kaon. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: Data from the NA31 experiment at the CERN SPS have been used for the first search for the decay mode KL → 3γ. Seven events have been found with an estimated background of 6.7 ± 1.5 events. The corresponding upper limit for the branching ratio is Γ(K L → 3γ) Γ(K L → all ) = 2.4 × 10 −7 at the 90% confidence level, assuming a phase-space decay distribution.

Abstract: Data from NA31 experiment at CERN have been used to measure the decay KS → γγ. From 69 candidate events of the type K0 → γγ, 52 events can be attributed to KL → γγ and one event is expected from background processes. The ratio of the relative decay widths R = Γ(KS → γγ)Γ(KL → γγ) is measured to be R = 2.2 ± 1.0(stat.) ± 0.3(syst.) ± 0.2(ext.) where the external systematic error is due to the experimental uncertainty in the branching ratio of the decay KL → γγ. This translates into a branching ratio of BR(KS → γγ) = (2.2 ± 1.1) × 10−6. If these data are combined with the published data from an earlier data taking period with the same experiment, the ratio R is determined to be R = 2.35 ± 0.75(stat.) ± 0.4(syst.) + 7.5 · (1 − BR(KL → γγ)5.86 × 10−4) where the last term accounts for the dependence on the measured KL → γγ branching ratio. The corresponding branching ratio for KS → γγ is BR(KS → γγ) = (2.4 ± 0.9) × 10−6. The measurement is a sensitive test of chiral perturbation theory and in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: The final design of the NA48 tagging system is described and a discussion of the 1992 test run results for the detector prototype is presented. A time resolution of about 90 ps is obtained with standard electronics, and a light yield of 300–400 p.e. is measured. A 450 MHz 6 bit FADC system has been designed and tested. This system has shown an intrinsic time resolution of 50 ps, and a double pulse resolution of 7 ns. A high precision alignment procedure allows to achieve a detector efficiency consistent with 100%. The technical and mechanical features of the design are well suited for the purpose of the experiment.

Abstract: The liquid argon calorimeter of the H 1 detector presently taking data at the HERA ep collider at DESY, Hamburg, is described. The main physics requirements and the most salient design features relevant to this calorimeter are given. The aim to have smooth and hermetic calorimetric coverage over the polar angular range 4° ≤ θ ≤ 154° is achieved by a single liquid argon cryostat containing calorimeter stacks structured in wheels and octants for easy handling. The absorber materials used are lead in the electromagnetic part and stainless steel in the hadronic part. The read-out system is pipelined to reduce the dead time induced by the high trigger rate expected at the HERA collider where consecutive bunches are separated in time by 96 ns. The main elements of the calorimeter, such as the cryostat, with its associated cryogenics, the stack modules, the read-out, calibration and trigger electronics as well as the data acquisition system are described. Performance results from data taken in calibration runs with full size H 1 calorimeter stacks at a CERN test beam, as well as results from data collected with the complete H 1 detector using cosmic rays during the initial phase of ep operations are presented. The observed energy resolutions and linearities are well in agreement with the requirements.
