Abstract: The results of a measurement of the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2)and the virtual photon-proton cross section are reported for momentum transfers squared Q^2 between 0.35 GeV^2 and 3.5 GeV^2 and for Bjorken-x values down to 6 10^{-6} using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1995. The data represent an increase in kinematic reach to lower x and Q^2 values of about a factor of 5 compared to previous H1 measurements. Including measurements from fixed target experiments the rise of F_2 with decreasing x is found to be less steep for the lowest Q^2 values measured. Abstract: A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off protons at HERA is presented at momentum transfers $8.5 \leq Q^2 \leq 35 GeV^2$ and large inelasticity $y = 0.7$, i.e. for the Bjorken-x range $0.00013 \leq x \leq 0.00055$. Using a next-to-leading order QCD fit to the structure function F_2 at lower y values, the contribution of F_2 to the measured cross section at high y is calculated and, by subtraction, the longitudinal structure function F_{L} is determined for the first time with an average value of $F_L=0.52 \pm 0.03 (stat)$^ {+0.25}_{-0.22}$ (syst) at $Q^2=15.4 GeV^2$ and $x=0.000243$., 17 pages, latex, 4 Figures

Abstract: At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive D-*+/- meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where [W-gamma p] approximate to 200 GeV and Q(2) < 0.01 GeV2, the result is sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (13.2 +/- 2.2(-1.7-4.8)(+2.1+9.9)) mu b. The second measurement for Q(2) < 4 GeV2 yields sigma(gamma p) --> c(c) over barX$) = (9.3 +/- 2.1(-1.8-3.2)(+1.9+6.9)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 142 GeV and sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (20.6 +/- 5.5(-3.9-7.2)(+4.3+15.4)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 230 GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the D-*+/- transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quarks is presented.

Abstract: The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons for $Q^2$ $>$ 8 GeV$^2$ and $ \simeq 90$ GeV/c$^2$ are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron$-$proton luminosity of $\simeq$~3~pb$^{-1}$. The dependences of the total virtual photon$-$proton ($\gamma^* p$) cross sections on $Q^2$, $W$ and the momentum transfer squared to the proton ($t$), and, for the $\rho$, the dependence on the polar decay angle ($\cos \theta^*$), are presented. The $J/\Psi$ : $\rh0$ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the total photoproduction cross section performed with the H1 detector at HERA. For an average centre of mass energy of 200 GeV a value of σtotλp=165±2±11µb has been obtained. A detailed analysis of the data in adequate kinematic regions enabled a decomposition of the total cross section in its elastic, single diffractive dissociation and remaining non-diffractive parts, based on safe assumptions on the double diffractive dissociation contribution.

Abstract: The high-field linear and quadratic Zeeman effect has been observed in nitroethylene. The spectrum is complicated by the presence of 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling which was reanalyzed from low-J zero-field transitions observed under high resolution. Our 14N quadrupole coupling constants are Xaa = -0.8887(18) MHz, Xbb = +0.0429(29) MHz, Xcc = +0.8458(29) MHz (c-axis perpendicular to the molecular plane). Our g-values and magnetic susceptibility anisotropics, fitted to the observed high-field Zeeman multiplets, are gaa = -0.15 985(39), -0.07197(31), gcc= -0.01080(32), 2ξaa-ξbb-ξcc= + 19.07(43) * 10-6 erg * G-2 * mole-1 and 2ξbb- ξcc- ξaa = + 29.67(53) -10-6 erg * G-2 * mole-1 . From them, the anisotropics in the second moments of the electronic charge distribution and the components of the molecular electric quadrupole moment with respect to the principal inertia axes system follow as 2> -2> = +36.55(7)Å2 , 2> - 2>= +23.58(9) Å2, - = -60.14(8) Å2, Qaa= -0.59(29) D * Å, Qbb = +0.07(36) D * Å, and Qcc = +0.52(46) D * Å. The 14N quadrupole coupling constants, the anisotropics in the second electronic moments and the quadrupole moments are compared to the corresponding Hartree-Fock SCF values calculated with the Gaussian 88 program. Abstract: New Article 505 of the 1996 National Electrical Code/spl copy/[NEC] introduces a concept of zone electrical area classification similar to that of the International Electrotechnical Commission's [IEC] Standard 79-10 [79-10]. This tutorial paper comparatively reviews the most common electrical installation concepts and practices in classified locations as defined by NEC Divisions and IEC Zones. In addition, it makes a comparative review of sections in Articles 500 and 501 to show that the concepts of zone classified installations were already recognized in earlier editions of the NEC for locations classified by division.

Abstract: We present a search for excited electrons, neutrinos and quarks using the H1 detector at the $ep$ collider HERA, based on data taken in 1994 with an integrated luminosity of 2.75 pb$^{-1}$. Radiative decays of excited quarks and neutrinos have been investigated as well as decays of excited electrons into all possible electroweak gauge bosons. Abstract: The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3 < y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2., 20 pages, 5 Figures

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced in deep inelastic scattering are measured as a function of the kinematic variables x_B and Q2 using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The data are compared to different parton emission models, either with or without ordering of the emissions in transverse momentum. The data provide evidence for a relatively large amount of parton radiation between the current and the remnant systems., 21 pages, latex, 7 Figures

Abstract: A search for leptoquarks at HERA was performed in H1 using 1994 $e^+ p$ data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about $3 \pb^{-1}$. Single leptoquarks were searched for in direct positron-quark fusion processes taking into account possible decays into lepton-quark pairs of either the first, the second, or the third generation. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is found in the various final states studied and mass dependent exclusion limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings of the leptoquarks. Compared with earlier results from an analysis of $e^-p$ data, exclusion limits are considerably improved for leptoquarks which could be produced via $e^+$-{\it valence~quark} fusion. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour conserving couplings, masses up to $275 \GeV$ (depending on the leptoquark type) are excluded for coupling values larger than $\sqrt{ 4 \pi \alpha_{em}}$. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour violating couplings, masses up to $225 \GeV$ are excluded for the first time in a direct search for couplings with leptons of the second or third generation larger than $\sqrt{ 4 \pi \alpha_{em}}$. Fourteen possible combinations of couplings are studied and stringent exclusion limits comparable or better than any existing direct or indirect limits are obtained for each leptoquark type., Comment: 16 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract: A contact interaction analysis is presented to search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model in deep inelastic $e^\pm p \rightarrow e^\pm \, hadrons$ scattering. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA and correspond to integrated luminosities of $0.909 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ and $2.947 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ for electron and positron beams, respectively. The differential cross sections $d\sigma / dQ^2$ are measured in the $Q^2$ range bet\-ween $160 \ \GeV^2$ and $20,000 \ \GeV^2$. The absence of any significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is used to constrain the couplings and masses of new leptoquarks and to set limits on electron--quark compositeness scales and on the radius of light quarks., Comment: 16 pages, latex, 2 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract: A leading order determination of the gluon density in the proton has been performed in the fractional momentum range $1.9 \cdot 10^{-3} < x_{g/p} < 0.18$ by measuring multi-jet events from boson-gluon fusion in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at the electron-proton collider HERA. This direct determination of the gluon density was performed in a kinematic region previously not accessible. Abstract: Jet rates in deep inelastic electron proton scattering are studied with the H1 detector at HERA for momentum transfers squared between 10 and 4000 GeV 2 . It is shown that they can be quantitatively described by perturbative QCD in next to leading order making use of the parton densities of the proton and with the strong coupling constant α s as a free parameter. The measured value, α s ( M Z 2 ) = 0.123 ± 0.018, is in agreement both with determinations from e + e − annihilation at LEP using the same observable and with the world average.

Abstract: A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. The dependence of this contribution on x-pomeron is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of a factorised structure function is presented. This structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance., 16 pages, latex, including 3 figures

Abstract: Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events, selected from 1993 data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA, are studied in the Breit frame of reference. The fragmentation function of the quark is compared with those of \ee data. It is shown that certain aspects of the quarks emerging from within the proton in \ep interactions are essentially the same as those of quarks pair-created from the vacuum in \ee annihilation. The measured area, peak position and widthof the fragmentation function show that the kinematic evolution variable, equivalent to the \ee squared centre of mass energy, is in the Breit frame the invariant square of the four-momentum transfer. Abstract: A measurement of the proton structure function $F_{\!2}(x,Q^2)$ is reported for momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ between 4.5 $GeV^2$ and 1600 $GeV^2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $1.8\cdot10^{-4}$ and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that $F_{\!2}$ increases significantly with decreasing $x$, confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The $Q^2$ dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the "diffractive" contribution to $F_{\!2}$., 32 pages, ps, appended as compressed, uuencoded file

Abstract: Photon-proton ($\gamma p$) interactions with~$Q^25$~GeV$^2$ are studied at the high energy electron-proton collider HERA. The transverse energy flow and relative rates of large rapidity gap events are compared in the two event samples. The observed similarity between $\gamma p$ and $\gamma^* p$ interactions can be understood in a picture where the photon develops as a hadronic object. The transverse energy density measured in the central region of the collision, at $\eta^*=0$ in the $\gamma^* p$ centre of mass frame, is compared with data from hadron-hadron interactions as function of the CMS energy of the collision., Comment: 15 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract: In der Anasthesie und Intensivmedizin kann auf die Benutzung thermolabiler, zur Wiederverwendung bestimmter Materialien nicht verzichtet werden. Die Dekontamination hitzelabilen benutzten Anasthesiezubehors ist problematisch, da die klassischen und sicheren physikalischen Sterilisationsverfahren aufgrund der Materialschadigung keine Anwendung finden konnen. Der rein chemischen Kaltdesinfektion ist die thermische bzw. chemo-thermische Desinfektion in automatisierten Grosreinigungsgeraten wegen der einfacheren und sicheren Handhabung uberlegen.

Abstract: The scale dependence of the evolution of photoproduction cross sections with the photon-proton centre of mass energy W is studied using low Q^2 < 0.01 GeV^2 e^+p interactions collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. The value of the largest transverse momentum of a charged particle in the photon fragmentation region is used to define the hard scale. The slope of the $W$ dependence of the cross section is observed to increase steeply with increasing transverse momentum. The result is compared to measurements of the Q^2 evolution of the W dependence of the virtual photon-proton cross section. Interpretations in terms of QCD and in terms of Regge phenomenology are discussed., 13 pages, latex, 3 Figures

Abstract: We present an experimental study of theep→eγ+p andep→eγ+X processes using data recorded by the H1 detector in 1993 at the electron-proton collider HERA. These processes are employed to measure the luminosity with an accuracy of 4.5 %. A subsample of theep→eγ+X events in which the hard photon is detected at angles θγ′ ≤ 0.45 mrad with respect to the incident electron direction is used to verify experimentally the size of radiative corrections to theep→eX inclusive cross section and to investigate the structure of the proton in theQ2 domain down to 2 GeV2, lower than previously attained at HERA.

25. Description of bone health in adolescents and young persons with Klinefelter syndrome - results from a pilot study.

Abstract: Background: In adults with Klinefelter syndrome (KS), impaired bone health with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) has been described even in the presence of testosterone replacement therapy. The aim of the present study was to characterize bone health in young patients with KS., Patients and Methods: 20 participants aged 16.10 ± 4.28 years with KS (7 with testosterone replacement therapy) were included in the KliBONE study (DRKS 00024870). Medical history, clinical, radiographic and biochemical parameters of bone health and metabolism were obtained. Radiographic bone health index (BHI) was assessed via automated digital X-ray radiogrammetry of the left hand or via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine and left femur in participants ≥ 16 years. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were differentiated into osteoclasts and quantified in 7 participants and 7 healthy controls., Results: Mean BHI SDS was - 1.42 ± 1.22 and mean BMD z-score at the lumbar vertebrae (L1-4) was - 0.92 ± 1.00. 25-OH-vitamin D levels < 20 ng/ml were detected in 8/20. Other parameters of bone metabolism (bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, PTH, ß-crosslaps and osteocalcin) were within age-appropriate reference ranges. Serum leptin SDS was elevated (mean 2.15 ± 1.19). The number of osteoclasts in participants with KS did not differ from that of controls., Conclusion: BHI SDS and BMD z-scores were lower than expected in young individuals with KS despite age-appropriate bone turnover markers and no apparent pathology in osteoclast differentiation. 26. Cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents and young adults with Klinefelter syndrome - a pilot study.

Abstract: Background: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) may be associated with a wide spectrum of phenotypic changes including endocrine, metabolic, cognitive, psychiatric and cardiorespiratory pathologies in adults. However, in adolescence the clinical phenotype of KS is not well described, especially regarding physical fitness. The present study reports on cardiorespiratory function in adolescents and young adults with KS., Methods: Adolescents and young adults with KS were recruited in a cross-sectional pilot study. Biochemical parameters of fitness including hormonal status, a body impedance analysis, the grip strength, the amount of physical activity at home for 5 days via trackbands and anamnestic parameters were assessed. In addition, participants underwent an incremental symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) on a bicycle ergometer., Results: Nineteen participants with KS aged 15.90 ± 4.12 years (range: 9.00 - 25.00) participated in the study. Pubertal status was Tanner 1 (n = 2), Tanner 2 - 4 (n = 7) and Tanner 5 (n = 10). Seven participants received testosterone replacement therapy. Mean BMI z-score was 0.45 ± 1.36 and mean fat mass was 22.93% ± 9.09. Grip strength was age-appropriate or above normal. 18 participants underwent CPET with subnormal results for maximum heart rate (z-score -2.84 ± 2.04); maximum workload (Watt max ; z score -1.28 ± 1.15) and maximum oxygen uptake per minute (z- score -2.25 ± 2.46). Eight participants (42.1%) met the criteria for chronotropic insufficiency (CI). Data from track-bands showed sedentary behavior for 81.15% ± 6.72 of the wear time., Conclusion: A substantial impairment of cardiopulmonary function can be detected in this group of boys to young adults with KS, including chronotropic insufficiency in 40%. The track-band data suggest a predominantly sedentary lifestyle, despite normal muscular strength as assessed via grip strength. Future studies need to investigate the cardiorespiratory system and its adaption to physical stress in a larger cohort and in more detail. 27. Rhythm and Blues - Amalie's 152nd session: From psychoanalysis to conversation and metaphor analysis - and back again.

Abstract: Conversation analysis and psychotherapy process research is an evolving field promising new insights for therapeutic practice. As the specimen case of Amalie, especially her 152nd session, has been investigated using various methods - of which we give a short overview - we offer a new analysis of session 152 based on a new transcription which allows for more detailed listening to the prosodic properties of this analytic dyad. Our findings show a) how analyst and patient co-create their common conversational object called psychoanalysis; b) how a lot of up-to-now not described analytical tools are applied, that can be described as "practices"; c) how a "dance of insight" is enacted by both participants in a common creation making patterns of interaction visible from "both sides"; d) how participants create metaphors as conversational and cognitive tools to reduce the enormous complexity of the analytic exchange and for other purposes; e) that prosodic rhythmicity and other prosodic features are best integrated in a threefold model for analytic conversation consisting of "interaction engine", "talking to" and "talking about" the patient.
