Kainic acid is a marine natural product and extremely useful for neuroscience research. A number of years ago, a preliminary account of its tritiation was reported and based on decades of experience with it, updated technical details about its tritium labelling as well as storage, stability and repurification are described.

The solvation shell structures of Ca2+ in aqueous and organic solutions probed by calcium L-edge soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and DFT/MD simulations show the coordination number of Ca2+ to be negatively correlated with the electrolyte concentration and the steric hindrance of the solvent molecule. In this work, the calcium L-edge soft XAS demonstrates its sensitivity to the surrounding chemical environment. Additionally, the total electron yield (TEY) mode is surface sensitive because the electron penetration depth is limited to a few nanometers. Thus this study shows its implications for future battery studies, especially for probing the electrolyte/electrode interface for electrochemical reactions under in situ/operando conditions.

A useful synthesis of (R)-[N-methyl-3 H]quinuclidinyl benzilate methiodide is described with the product characterized by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), tritium nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and mass spectrometry (MS). Several methods are provided to purify the radioligand, and its storage and stability are also discussed.

Footwear, carpet, soft furnishings, automotive interiors, and multi-layer packaging are examples of products manufactured from several types of polymers whose inextricability poses significant challenges for recycling at end-of-life. Here, we show that chemical circularity in mixed-polymer recycling becomes possible by controlling the rates of depolymerization of polydiketoenamines (PDKs) over several orders of magnitude through molecular engineering. Stepwise deconstruction of mixed-PDK composites, laminates, and assemblies is chemospecific, allowing a prescribed subset of monomers, fillers, and additives to be recovered in pristine condition at each stage of the recycling process. We provide a theoretical framework to understand PDK depolymerization via acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and experimentally validate trends predicted for the rate-limiting step. The control achieved by PDKs in managing thermal and materials entropy points to new opportunities for pairing circular design with sustainable manufacturing.

Understanding and improving obstetrical quality and safety is an important goal of professional societies, and many interventions such as checklists, safety bundles, educational interventions, or other culture changes have been implemented to improve the quality of care provided to obstetrical patients. Although many factors contribute to delivery decisions, a reduced workload has addressed how provider issues such as fatigue or behaviors surrounding impending shift changes may influence the delivery mode and outcomes.The objective was to assess whether intrapartum obstetrical interventions and adverse outcomes differ based on the temporal proximity of the delivery to the attending's shift change.This was a secondary analysis from a multicenter obstetrical cohort in which all patients with cephalic, singleton gestations who attempted vaginal birth were eligible for inclusion. The primary exposure used to quantify the relationship between the proximity of the provider to their shift change and a delivery intervention was the ratio of time from the most recent attending shift change to vaginal delivery or decision for cesarean delivery to the total length of the shift. Ratios were used to represent the proportion of time completed in the shift by normalizing for varying shift lengths. A sensitivity analysis restricted to patients who were delivered by physicians working 12-hour shifts was performed. Outcomes chosen included cesarean delivery, episiotomy, third- or fourth-degree perineal laceration, 5-minute Apgar score of4, and neonatal intensive care unit admission. Chi-squared tests were used to evaluate outcomes based on the proportion of the attending's shift completed. Adjusted and unadjusted logistic models fitting a cubic spline (when indicated) were used to determine whether the frequency of outcomes throughout the shift occurred in a statistically significant, nonlinear pattern RESULTS: Of the 82,851 patients eligible for inclusion, 47,262 (57%) had ratio data available and constituted the analyzable sample. Deliveries were evenly distributed throughout shifts, with 50.6% taking place in the first half of shifts. There were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of cesarean delivery, episiotomy, third- or fourth-degree perineal lacerations, or 5-minute Apgar scores of4 based on the proportion of the shift completed. The findings were unchanged when evaluated with a cubic spline in unadjusted and adjusted logistic models. Sensitivity analyses performed on the 22.2% of patients who were delivered by a physician completing a 12-hour shift showed similar findings. There was a small increase in the frequency of neonatal intensive care unit admissions with a greater proportion of the shift completed (adjusted P=.009), but the findings did not persist in the sensitivity analysis.Clinically significant differences in obstetrical interventions and outcomes do not seem to exist based on the temporal proximity to the attending physician's shift change. Future work should attempt to directly study unit culture and provider fatigue to further investigate opportunities to improve obstetrical quality of care, and additional studies are needed to corroborate these findings in community settings.

Computational analysis shows that the enantioselectivity of asymmetric Lewis-acid organocatalysis of the Diels–Alder cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene to cinnamates arises from stacking interactions that favor the addition of the diene to the more hindered face of the dienophile, while electrostatic interactions control the diastereoselectivity by selectively stabilizing the endo transition state. These results not only explain the stereoselectivity of these silylium-ion-ACDC reactions but should also guide the development of more effective ion-pairing asymmetric organocatalysts.

Aggregation of TAR-DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) and of its fragments TDP-25 and TDP-35 occurs in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). TDP-25 and TDP-35 act as seeds for TDP-43 aggregation, altering its function and exerting toxicity. Thus, inhibition of TDP-25 and TDP-35 aggregation and promotion of their degradation may protect against cellular damage. Upregulation of HSPB8 is one possible approach for this purpose, since this chaperone promotes the clearance of an ALS associated fragments of TDP-43 and is upregulated in the surviving motor neurones of transgenic ALS mice and human patients. We report that overexpression of HSPB8 in immortalized motor neurones decreased the accumulation of TDP-25 and TDP-35 and that protection against mislocalized/truncated TDP-43 was observed for HSPB8 in Drosophila melanogaster. Overexpression of HSP67Bc, the functional ortholog of human HSPB8, suppressed the eye degeneration caused by the cytoplasmic accumulation of a TDP-43 variant with a mutation in the nuclear localization signal (TDP-43-NLS). TDP-43-NLS accumulation in retinal cells was counteracted by HSP67Bc overexpression. According with this finding, downregulation of HSP67Bc increased eye degeneration, an effect that is consistent with the accumulation of high molecular weight TDP-43 species and ubiquitinated proteins. Moreover, we report a novel Drosophila model expressing TDP-35, and show that while TDP-43 and TDP-25 expression in the fly eyes causes a mild degeneration, TDP-35 expression leads to severe neurodegeneration as revealed by pupae lethality; the latter effect could be rescued by HSP67Bc overexpression. Collectively, our data demonstrate that HSPB8 upregulation mitigates TDP-43 fragment mediated toxicity, in mammalian neuronal cells and flies.

Noncovalent interactions are ubiquitous in organic systems, and can play decisive roles in the outcome of asymmetric organocatalytic reactions. Their prevalence, combined with the often subtle line separating favorable dispersion interactions from unfavorable steric interactions, often complicates the identification of the particular noncovalent interactions responsible for stereoselectivity. Ultimately, the stereoselectivity of most organocatalytic reactions hinges on the balance of both favorable and unfavorable noncovalent interactions in the stereocontrolling transition state (TS). In this Account, we provide an overview of our attempts to understand the role of noncovalent interactions in organocatalyzed reactions and to develop new computational tools for organocatalyst design. Following a brief discussion of noncovalent interactions involving aromatic rings and the associated challenges capturing these effects computationally, we summarize two examples of chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed reactions in which noncovalent interactions play pivotal, although somewhat unexpected, roles. In the first, List's catalytic asymmetric Fischer indole reaction, we show that both π-stacking and CH/π interactions of the substrate with the 3,3'-aryl groups of the catalyst impact the stability of the stereocontrolling TS. However, these noncovalent interactions oppose each other, with π-stacking interactions stabilizing the TS leading to one enantiomer and CH/π interactions preferentially stabilizing the competing TS. Ultimately, the CH/π interactions dominate and, when combined with hydrogen bonding interactions, lead to preferential formation of the observed product. In the second example, a series of phosphoric acid catalyzed asymmetric ring openings of meso-epoxides, we show that noncovalent interactions of the substrates with the 3,3'-aryl groups of the catalyst play only an indirect role in stereoselectivity. Instead, the stereoselectivity of these reactions are driven by the electrostatic stabilization of a fleeting partial positive charge in the SN2-like transition state by the chiral electrostatic environment of the phosphoric acid catalyst. Next, we describe our studies of bipyridine N-oxide and N,N'-dioxide catalyzed alkylation reactions. Based on several examples, we demonstrate that there are many potential arrangements of ligands around a hexacoordinate silicon in the stereocontrolling TS, and one must consider all of these in order to identify the lowest-lying TS structures. We also present a model in which electrostatic interactions between a formyl CH group and a chlorine in these TSs underlie the enantioselectivity of these reactions. Finally, we discuss our efforts to develop computational tools for the screening of potential organocatalyst designs, starting in the context of bipyridine N,N'-dioxide catalyzed alkylation reactions. Our new computational tool kit (AARON) has been used to design highly effective catalysts for the asymmetric propargylation of benzaldehyde, and is currently being used to screen catalysts for other reactions. We conclude with our views on the potential roles of computational chemistry in the future of organocatalyst design.

Computational studies of three chiral phosphoric-acid-catalyzed asymmetric ring-openings of meso-epoxides show that the enantioselectivity of these reactions stems from favorable electrostatic interactions of the preferred transition state with the phosphoryl oxygen of the catalyst. The 3,3′-aryl substituents of the catalysts, which are vital for enantioselectivity, serve primarily to create a narrow binding groove that restricts the substrate orientations within the chiral electrostatic environment of the phosphoric acid. This electrostatic, enzyme-like mode of stereoinduction appears to be general for these reactions and suggests a complementary means of achieving stereoinduction in chiral phosphoric acid catalysis. However, significant pitfalls in metal plating and stripping arise from electrolyte decomposition and can be related to the coordination environment around Ca2+ with both the negatively charged anion and the organic-aprotic solvent. In this study, we apply multiple spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with density functional theory to evaluate the coordination environment of Ca2+ across a class of ethereal solvents. Through the combination of X-ray absorption fine structure and time-dependent density functional theory, descriptive measures of the local geometry, coordination, and electronic structure of Ca-ethereal complexes provide distinct structural trends depending on the extent of the Ca2+-solvent interaction. Finally, we correlate these findings with electrochemical measurements of calcium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropoxy)borate (CaBHFIP2) salts dissolved within this class of solvents to provide insight into the preferred structural configuration of Ca2+ electrolytic solutions for optimized electrochemical plating and stripping.

Rational design of novel electrolytes with enhanced functionality requires fundamental molecular-level understanding of structure-property relationships. Here we examine the suitability of a range of organic solvents for non-aqueous electrolytes in secondary magnesium batteries using density functional theory (DFT) calculations as well as experimental probes such as cyclic voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy. The solvents considered include ethereal solvents (e.g., glymes) sulfones (e.g., tetramethylene sulfone), and acetonitrile. Computed reduction potentials show that all solvents considered are stable against reduction by Mg metal. Additional computations were carried out to assess the stability of solvents in contact with partially reduced Mg cations (Mg2+ → Mg+) formed during cycling (e.g., deposition) by identifying reaction profiles of decomposition pathways. Most solvents, including some proposed for secondary Mg energy storage applications, exhibit decomposition pathways that are surprisingly exergonic. Interestingly, the stability of these solvents is largely dictated by magnitude of the kinetic barrier to decomposition. This insight should be valuable toward rational design of improved Mg electrolytes.

Future energy applications rely on our ability to tune liquid intermolecular interactions and achieve designer electrolytes with highly optimized properties. In this work, we demonstrate rational, combined experimental-computational design of a new carba- closo-dodecaborate-based salt with enhanced anodic stability for Mg energy storage applications. We first establish, through a careful examination using a range of solvents, the anodic oxidation of a parent anion, the carba- closo-dodecaborate anion at 4.6 V vs Mg0/2+ (2.0 vs Fc0/+), a value lower than that projected for this anion in organic solvent-based electrolytes and lower than weakly associating bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and tetrafluoroborate anions. Solvents such as acetonitrile, 3-methylsulfolane, and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol are shown to enable the direct measurement of carba- closo-dodecaborate oxidation, where the resultant neutral radical drives passive film formation on the electrode. Second, we employ computational screening to evaluate the impact of functionalization of the parent anion on its stability and find that replacement of the carbon-vertex proton with a more electronegative fluorine or trifluoromethyl ligand increases the oxidative stability and decreases the contact-ion pair formation energy while maintaining reductive stability. This predicted expansion of the electrochemical window for fluorocarba- closo-dodecaborate is experimentally validated. Future work includes evaluation of the viability of these derivative anions as efficient and stable carriers for energy storage as a function of the ionic transport through the resulting surface films formed on candidate cathodes.

Fundamental molecular-level understanding of functional properties of liquid solutions provides an important basis for designing optimized electrolytes for numerous applications. In particular, exhaustive knowledge of solvation structure, stability, and transport properties is critical for developing stable electrolytes for fast-charging and high-energy-density next-generation energy storage systems. Accordingly, there is growing interest in the rational design of electrolytes for beyond lithium-ion systems by tuning the molecular-level interactions of solvate species present in the electrolytes. Here we present a review of the solvation structure of multivalent electrolytes and its impact on the electrochemical performance of these batteries. A direct correlation between solvate species present in the solution and macroscopic properties of electrolytes is sparse for multivalent electrolytes and contradictory results have been reported in the literature. This review aims to illustrate the current understanding, compare results, and highlight future needs and directions to enable the deep understanding needed for the rational design of improved multivalent electrolytes.

Concise biomimetic syntheses of the Strychnos-Strychnos-type bis-indole alkaloids (-)-leucoridine A (1) and C (2) were accomplished through the biomimetic dimerization of (-)-dihydrovalparicine (3). En route to 3, the known alkaloids (+)-geissoschizoline (8) and (-)-dehydrogeissoschizoline (10) were also prepared. DFT calculations were employed to elucidate the mechanism, which favors a stepwise aza-Michael/spirocyclization sequence over the alternate hetero-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction.

BACKGROUND: While there are well-accepted standards for the diagnosis of arrested active-phase labor, the definition of a "failed" induction of labor remains less certain. One approach to diagnosing a failed induction is based on the duration of the latent phase. However, a standard for the minimum duration that the latent phase of a labor induction should continue, absent acute maternal or fetal indications for cesarean delivery, remains lacking. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes as a function of the duration of the latent phase among nulliparous women undergoing labor induction. METHODS: This study is based on data from an obstetric cohort of women delivering at 25 U.S. hospitals from 2008-2011. Nulliparous women who had a term singleton gestation in the cephalic presentation were eligible for this analysis if they underwent a labor induction. Consistent with prior studies, the latent phase was determined to begin once cervical ripening had ended, oxytocin was initiated and rupture of membranes (ROM) had occurred, and was determined to end once 5 cm dilation was achieved. The frequencies of cesarean delivery, as well as of adverse maternal (e.g., cesarean delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, chorioamnionitis) and perinatal outcomes (e.g., a composite frequency of either seizures, sepsis, bone or nerve injury, encephalopathy, or death), were compared as a function of the duration of the latent phase (analyzed with time both as a continuous measure and categorized in 3-hour increments). Background: The 69th World Health Assembly approved the Global Health Sector Strategy to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030. Although no virological cure exists for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, existing therapies to control viral replication and prophylaxis to minimise mother-to-child transmission make elimination of HBV feasible. We aimed to estimate the national, regional, and global prevalence of HBsAg in the general population and in the population aged 5 years in 2016, as well as coverage of prophylaxis, diagnosis, and treatment. Methods: In this modelling study, we used a Delphi process that included a literature review in PubMed and Embase, followed by interviews with experts, to quantify the historical epidemiology of HBV infection. We then used a dynamic HBV transmission and progression model to estimate the country-level and regional-level prevalence of HBsAg in 2016 and the effect of prophylaxis and treatment on disease burden. Findings: We developed models for 120 countries, 78 of which were populated with data approved by experts. Using these models, we estimated that the global prevalence of HBsAg in 2016 was 3·9% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 3·4–4·6), corresponding to 291 992 000 (251 513 000–341 114 000) infections. Of these infections, around 29 million (10%) were diagnosed, and only 4·8 million (5%) of 94 million individuals eligible for treatment actually received antiviral therapy. Around 1·8 (1·6–2·2) million infections were in children aged 5 years, with a prevalence of 1·4% (1·2–1·6). We estimated that 87% of infants had received the three-dose HBV vaccination in the first year of life, 46% had received timely birth-dose vaccination, and 13% had received hepatitis B immunoglobulin along with the full vaccination regimen. Less than 1% of mothers with a high viral load had received antiviral therapy to reduce mother-to-child transmission. Interpretation: Our estimate of HBV prevalence in 2016 differs from previous studies, potentially because we took into account the effect of infant prophylaxis and early childhood vaccination, as well as changing prevalence over time. Although some regions are well on their way to meeting prophylaxis and prevalence targets, all regions must substantially scale-up access to diagnosis and treatment to meet the global targets. The high specific activity tritiation of (+)-SKF-10,047 (1) and N,N-dimethyltryptamine (4) is described. [N-allyl-3H] (+)-SKF-10,047 (3) was prepared by Lindlar catalyst tritiation of (+)-N-propargylnormetazocine (2) and [N-methyl-3H] N,N-dimethyltryptamine (6) was synthesized by the alkylation of N-methyltryptamine (5) with [3H] methyl iodide. Both sigma-1 synthetic agonist 3 and endogenous agonist 6 have been useful in studying this receptor.

Background Studies of early-term birth after demonstrated fetal lung maturity show that respiratory and other outcomes are worse with early-term birth (370–386 weeks) even after demonstrated fetal lung maturity when compared with full-term birth (390–406 weeks). However, these studies included medically indicated births and are therefore potentially limited by confounding by the indication for delivery. Thus, the increase in adverse outcomes might be due to the indication for early-term birth rather than the early-term birth itself. Objective We examined the prevalence and risks of adverse neonatal outcomes associated with early-term birth after confirmed fetal lung maturity as compared with full-term birth in the absence of indications for early delivery. Study Design This is a secondary analysis of an observational study of births to 115,502 women in 25 hospitals in the United States from 2008 through 2011. Singleton nonanomalous births at 37–40 weeks with no identifiable indication for delivery were included; early-term births after positive fetal lung maturity testing were compared with full-term births. The primary outcome was a composite of death, ventilator for ≥2 days, continuous positive airway pressure, proven sepsis, pneumonia or meningitis, treated hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia (phototherapy), and 5-minute Apgar Results In all, 48,137 births met inclusion criteria; the prevalence of fetal lung maturity testing in the absence of medical or obstetric indications for early delivery was 0.52% (n = 249). There were 180 (0.37%) early-term births after confirmed pulmonary maturity and 47,957 full-term births. Women in the former group were more likely to be non-Hispanic white, smoke, have received antenatal steroids, have induction, and have a cesarean. Risks of the composite (16.1% vs 5.4%; adjusted odds ratio, 3.2; 95% confidence interval, 2.1–4.8 from logistic regression) were more frequent with elective early-term birth. Propensity scores matching confirmed the increased primary composite in elective early-term births: adjusted odds ratios, 4.3 (95% confidence interval, 1.8–10.5) for 1:1 and 3.5 (95% confidence interval, 1.8–6.5) for 1:2 matching. Among components of the primary outcome, CPAP use and hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy were significantly increased. Transient tachypnea of the newborn, neonatal intensive care unit admission, and prolonged neonatal intensive care unit stay (>2 days) were also increased with early-term birth. Conclusion Even with confirmed pulmonary maturity, early-term birth in the absence of medical or obstetric indications is associated with worse neonatal respiratory and hepatic outcomes compared with full-term birth, suggesting relative immaturity of these organ systems in early-term births.

Several studies have indicated that in birds breathing frequency (f, breaths min−1) scales to the −1/3 of body weight (W, kg); this is different from the −1/4 of mammals. We wondered if this discrepancy was due to the peculiar scaling pattern of aquatic birds, as is the case of aquatic mammals. In fact, we had noted previously that the allometric scaling of f differs considerably between aquatic and terrestrial mammals, respectively, W−0.42 and W−0.25. Measurements of f were obtained in 48 aquatic birds of 22 species and in 35 terrestrial birds of 27 species, during resting conditions on land. Additional data from 11 aquatic and 14 terrestrial species, different from the ones measured, were obtained from the literature. The allometric curve of all species combined (terrestrial and aquatic, n=74) was f=13.3W−0.36, similar to what is reported in previous studies. International audience; Dogs differ greatly in their morphological characteristics including various tail phenotypes. Congenitally short-tailed dogs are present in many breeds; however, the causative mutation located in the T-box transcription factor T gene (C189G) had only been described in the bobtailed Pembroke Welsh Corgis. We investigated here the presence of the T gene mutation in 23 other breeds (360 dogs, including 156 natural short tailed) in which natural bobtailed dogs exist. In the 17 breeds in which the C189G mutation was observed, there was a perfect correlation between this mutation and the short-tail phenotype. However, 6 breeds did not carry the known substitution or any other mutations in the T gene coding regions. No dogs were found to be homozygous for the C189G mutation, suggesting that the homozygous condition is lethal. In order to study the effect of the T gene mutation on litter size, we compared the number of puppies born from short-tailed parents to that born from long-tailed parents. In the Swedish Vallhund breed, we observed a 29% decrease in the litter size when both parents were short tailed. Given that the T gene mutation is not present in all breeds of short-tailed dog, there must be yet other genetic factors affecting tail phenotypes to be discovered.

Stress granules (SGs) are ribonucleoprotein complexes induced by stress. They sequester mRNAs and disassemble when the stress subsides, allowing translation restoration. In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), aberrant SGs cannot disassemble and therefore accumulate and are degraded by autophagy. However, the molecular events causing aberrant SG formation and the molecular players regulating this transition are largely unknown. We report that defective ribosomal products (DRiPs) accumulate in SGs and promote a transition into an aberrant state that renders SGs resistant to RNase. We show that only a minor fraction of aberrant SGs is targeted by autophagy, whereas the majority disassembles in a process that requires assistance by the HSPB8-BAG3-HSP70 chaperone complex. We further demonstrate that HSPB8-BAG3-HSP70 ensures the functionality of SGs and restores proteostasis by targeting DRiPs for degradation. We propose a system of chaperone-mediated SG surveillance, or granulostasis, which regulates SG composition and dynamics and thus may play an important role in ALS.

Although preterm birth37 weeks' gestation is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in the United States, the majority of data regarding preterm neonatal outcomes come from older studies, and many reports have been limited to only very preterm neonates. Delineation of neonatal outcomes by delivery gestational age is needed to further clarify the continuum of mortality and morbidity frequencies among preterm neonates.We sought to describe the contemporary frequencies of neonatal death, neonatal morbidities, and neonatal length of stay across the spectrum of preterm gestational ages.This was a secondary analysis of an obstetric cohort of 115,502 women and their neonates who were born in 25 hospitals nationwide, 2008 through 2011. All liveborn nonanomalous singleton preterm (23.0-36.9 weeks of gestation) neonates were included in this analysis. The frequency of neonatal death, major neonatal morbidity (intraventricular hemorrhage grade III/IV, seizures, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, necrotizing enterocolitis stage II/III, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, persistent pulmonary hypertension), and minor neonatal morbidity (hypotension requiring treatment, intraventricular hemorrhage grade I/II, necrotizing enterocolitis stage I, respiratory distress syndrome, hyperbilirubinemia requiring treatment) were calculated by delivery gestational age; each neonate was classified once by the worst outcome for which criteria was met.In all, 8334 deliveries met inclusion criteria. There were 119 (1.4%) neonatal deaths. In all, 657 (7.9%) neonates had major morbidity, 3136 (37.6%) had minor morbidity, and 4422 (53.1%) survived without any of the studied morbidities. Deaths declined rapidly with each advancing week of gestation. This decline in death was accompanied by an increase in major neonatal morbidity, which peaked at 54.8% at 25 weeks of gestation. As frequencies of death and major neonatal morbidity fell, minor neonatal morbidity increased, peaking at 81.7% at 31 weeks of gestation. The frequency of all morbidities fell32 weeks. After 25 weeks, neonatal length of hospital stay decreased significantly with each additional completed week of pregnancy; among babies delivered from 26-32 weeks of gestation, each additional week in utero reduced the subsequent length of neonatal hospitalization by a minimum of 8 days. The median postmenstrual age at discharge nadired around 36 weeks' postmenstrual age for babies born at 31-35 weeks of gestation.Our data show that there is a continuum of outcomes, with each additional week of gestation conferring survival benefit while reducing the length of initial hospitalization. These contemporary data can be useful for patient counseling regarding preterm outcomes.

Concise biomimetic syntheses of the Strychnos-Strychnos-type bis-indole alkaloids (-)-leucoridine A (1) and C (2) were accomplished through the biomimetic dimerization of (-)-dihydrovalparicine (3). En route to 3, the known alkaloids (+)-geissoschizoline (8) and (-)-dehydrogeissoschizoline (10) were also prepared. DFT calculations were employed to elucidate the mechanism, which favors a stepwise aza-Michael/spirocyclization sequence over the alternate hetero-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction.

Computational analyses of the first catalytic asymmetric Fischer indolization (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 18534) reveal that enantioselectivity arises from differences in hydrogen bonding and CH/π interactions between the substrate and catalyst in the operative transition states. This selectivity occurs despite strong π-stacking interactions that reduce the enantioselectivity.

Objective We sought to describe the prevalence of serious maternal complications following early preterm birth by gestational age (GA), delivery route, and type of cesarean incision. Study Design Trained personnel abstracted data from maternal and neonatal charts for all deliveries on randomly selected days representing one third of deliveries across 25 US hospitals over 3 years (n = 115,502). All women delivering nonanomalous singletons between 23-33 weeks' gestation were included. Women were excluded for antepartum stillbirth and highly morbid conditions for which route of delivery would not likely impact morbidity including nonreassuring fetal status, cord prolapse, placenta previa, placenta accreta, placental abruption, and severe and unstable maternal conditions (cardiopulmonary collapse, acute respiratory distress syndrome, seizures). Serious maternal complications were defined as: hemorrhage (blood loss ≥1500 mL, blood transfusion, or hysterectomy for hemorrhage), infection (endometritis, wound dehiscence, or wound infection requiring antibiotics, reopening, or unexpected procedure), intensive care unit admission, or death. Delivery route was categorized as classic cesarean delivery (CCD), low transverse cesarean delivery (LTCD), low vertical cesarean delivery (LVCD), and vaginal delivery. Association of delivery route with complications was estimated using multivariable regression models yielding adjusted relative risks (aRR) controlling for maternal age, race, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, preterm premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, GA, and hospital of delivery. Results Of 2659 women who met criteria for inclusion in this analysis, 8.6% of women experienced serious maternal complications. Complications were associated with GA and were highest between 23-27 weeks of gestation. The frequency of complications was associated with delivery route; compared with 3.5% of vaginal delivery, 23.0% of CCD (aRR, 3.54; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.29–5.48), 12.1% of LTCD (aRR, 2.59; 95% CI, 1.77–3.77), and 10.3% of LVCD (aRR, 2.27; 95% CI, 0.68–7.55) experienced complications. There was no significant difference in complication rates between CCD and LTCD (aRR, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.95–1.97) or between CCD and LVCD (aRR, 1.56; 95% CI, 0.48–5.07). Conclusion The risk of maternal complications after early preterm delivery is substantial, particularly in women who undergo cesarean delivery. Obstetricians need to be prepared to manage potential hemorrhage, infection, and intensive care unit admission for early preterm births requiring cesarean delivery.

Some individuals respond to habitat degradation by dispersing to less degraded areas while others remain but display altered behaviours, potentially compensating for the habitat change. We examined the latter possibility by evaluating foraging behaviour and size of lesser snow geese over a period during which their habitat became severely degraded. We show that in this now-degraded habitat, adults spend more of their total time in motor activities and less time in vigilance and comfort behaviours. Goslings spend less of their total time foraging and more in comfort and other behaviours. The pecking rate of both adults and goslings while foraging increases, as do motor and searching behaviours of adults. These changes have not enabled the birds to keep pace with the loss of vegetation, and the size of goslings has continued to decline, likely leading to a reduction in reproductive success. The persistent use of degraded salt marsh is probably related to philopatry and will further damage the marsh. Nous avons etudie cette derniere alternative en evaluant le comportement d'alimentation et la taille de petites oies des neiges durant une periode ou leur habitat s'est severement degrade. Nous avons decouvert que dans les sites degrades, le temps total consacre par les oies adultes aux activites motrices est superieur a celui consacre aux comportement de vigilance et ceux associes au confort. Les oisons passent moins de temps a se nourrir et consacrent plus de temps aux autres comportements, dont ceux associes au confort. Durant l'alimentation, le taux de becquetage des adultes et des oisons est plus eleve, tout comme les comportements de motricite et de recherche des adultes. Ces changements ne permettent toutefois pas aux oies de s'adapter aux pertes de vegetation. Par consequent, la taille des oisons continue de diminuer, ce qui risque d'entrainer une baisse du succes reproducteur. La persistance des oies a utiliser les marais sales degrades est probablement due a leur philopatrie, mais cette habitude contribuera a endommager davantage les marais. We find that trading volume increases and market liquidity remains unchanged, while the adverse selection and order-processing cost components of the spread increase and decrease, respectively, after margin levels decline when stocks become margin-eligible. This evidence indicates that the information content of trades has increased, thereby improving market quality. However, no changes were detected after the 1997 regulatory reforms. These results have implications across a broad swath of corporate finance dimensions, including the (1) cost of capital, (2) public vs. private financing decision, (3) form of managerial compensation, (4) type of ownership structure, and (5) degree of shareholder monitoring.

This is the first of two special issues of Real Estate Economics dedicated to the study of Real Estate Investment Trusts or REITs. The goal of these special issues is modest. Rather than attempting to provide a comprehensive survey of current research on REITs,1 our objective is instead to provide readers with a sampling of the various general directions of inquiry either about REITs or employing REITs. The volume of research on REITs has exploded in recent years. The objective of this introduction is to provide three non-mutually exclusive catalysts for this explosion, and to provide brief summaries of the studies contained herein.

∗∗∗ We investigate relations among inside ownership, managerial expenses, risk sharing and equity valuations. Our engine of analysis—Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)—provides a unique and rich framework for analysis since we can calculate extremely accurate measures of asset replacement costs, and hence relative valuation (Tobin’s q). Further, the nature of the financial statements allows us to examine the impact of insider ownership on agency costs since we can accurately measure the costs of the entire management team. Our results show that firms with greater insider holdings tend to invest in assets with lower systematic risk and use less debt in their capital structure. At the same time, managerial expenses are lower as inside ownership increases. Finally, higher levels of insider ownership are associated with higher relative valuation as measured by both higher premiums to net asset value and higher multiples of cash flows. The results have implications for the design of optimal management contracts for both REITs and firms in general. One of the more contentious issues in the finance literature concerns the relation between ownership structure and firm valuation or financial performance. Since at least Jensen and Meckling (1976), it has been well understood that managers have incentives to make decisions that are in their, but not necessarily their shareholders’, best interests. These agency conflicts can be eliminated by simply requiring that managers retain the entire equity stake in the assets they manage. Unfortunately this solution leads to inefficient risk sharing. Wealth-constrained owner‐managers are likely to be assuming large amounts of idiosyncratic risk when their wealth is concentrated in the firm they manage. Risk-averse managers will have to be compensated for bearing the additional idiosyncratic risk as their ownership share increases. Clearly, fractional outside owners can more easily and efficiently diversify. One consequence to allocating a greater ownership share to managers may be that they choose to reduce the risk level of the firm in order to reduce their
