We report measured Tc of superconducting Ti/Au bilayer strips with a width W varying from 5 to 50 µm. The strips were fabricated based on a Ti/Au bilayer that consists of a 41-nm-thick Ti layer to which a 280-nm-thick Au layer was added. We find that the Tc drops as W decreases and the declining trend almost perfectly follows Tc/ [mK] = - 738.4 [μ m] 2/ W2+ 91.0 , where Tc(W= ∞) of 91 mK is consistent with the intrinsic Tc of the bilayer. The result is interpreted as a consequence of the lateral inverse proximity effect originated in normal-metal microstructures, namely Au overhangs that exist at the edges of the Ti/Au bilayer. The Tc shift from the intrinsic Tc should be anticipated in addition to the longitudinal proximity effect from superconducting Nb leads when one designs Ti/Au TESs.

We report on the x-ray background rate measured with transition-edge sensors (TES) micro-calorimeters under frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) readout as a possible technology for future experiments aiming at a direct detection of axion-like particles. Future axion helioscopes will make use of large magnets to convert axions into photons in the keV range and x-ray detectors to observe them. To achieve this, a detector array with high spectral performance and extremely low background is necessary. TES are single-photon, non-dispersive, high-resolution micro-calorimeters and represent a possible candidate for this application. We have been developing x-ray TES micro-calorimeters and an FDM readout technology in the framework of the space-borne x-ray astronomical observatories. We show that the current generation of our detectors is already a promising technology for a possible axion search experiment, having measured an x-ray background rate of 2.2(2) × 10−4 cm−2 s−1 keV−1 with a cryogenic demonstrator not optimized for this specific application. We then make a prospect to further improve the background rate down to the required value (

We demonstrate multiplexed readout of 43 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers operating at 90 mK using a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) readout chain with bias frequencies ranging from 1 to 3.5 MHz and a typical frequency spacing of 32 kHz. We improve the previously reported performance of our FDM system by two important steps. First, we replace the coplanar wires with microstrip wires, which minimize the cross talk from mutual inductance. From the measured electrical cross talk (ECT) map, the ECT of all pixels is carrier leakage dominated. Only five pixels show an ECT level higher than 1%. Second, we reduce the thermal response speed of the TES detectors by a factor of 20 by increasing the heat capacity of the TES, which allows us to bias all TES detectors below 50% in transition without oscillations. We compare the current–voltage curves and noise spectra of the TESs measured in single-pixel mode and multiplexing mode. We also compare the noise equivalent power (NEP) and the saturation power of the bolometers in both modes, where 38 pixels show less than 10% difference in NEP and 5% difference in saturation power when measured in the two different modes. The measured noise spectrum is in good agreement with the simulated noise based on measured parameters from an impedance measurement, confirming that our TES is dominated by phonon noise.

We report our most recent progress and demonstration of a frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) readout technology for transition-edge sensor (TES) arrays, both of which we have been developing, in the framework of the X-IFU instrument on board the future Athena X-ray telescope. Using Ti/Au TES micro-calorimeters, high-Q LC filters and analog/digital electronics developed at SRON and low-noise two-stage SQUID amplifiers from VTT Finland, we demonstrated feasibility of our FDM readout technology, with the simultaneous readout of 37 pixels with an energy resolution at of 2.23 eV at an energy of 6 keV. We present an analysis of the bandwidth of an asymmetric 8-beam Fourier grating as the beam multiplexer for a 4.7 THz local oscillator used in a heterodyne receiver. We take the grating designed for NASA GUSTO balloon observatory as an example to address the bandwidth question although it does not need to operate over a wide frequency range. By illuminating the grating at different frequencies from 4.445 to 5.045 THz, we simulated the changes of its performance in three aspects using COMSOL Multiphysics: diffraction efficiency, power uniformity, and the angular distribution of the output beams. These parameters can affect the coupling efficiency between the output beams of the grating and the beams of a mixer array. The bandwidth of the grating is found to be 230 GHz, corresponding to 4.9% of the operating frequency, which is sufficient for many applications.

et al., Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature., This work is supported by NASA under grant no. 80NSSC18K0132.

Large arrays of transition edge sensors (TESs) are the baseline for a number of future space observatories. For instance, the X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU) instrument on board the ATHENA space telescope will consist of $$\sim$$ ∼ 3000 TESs with high energy resolution ($$2\,{\mathrm{eV}}$$ 2 eV at X-ray energies up to 7 keV). In this contribution we report on the development of an X-ray TES array as a backup detector technology for X-IFU. The baseline readout technology for this mission is time domain multiplexing where the detectors are DC biased. Specifically, we report on the characterization of four different Ti/Au TESs with the following dimensions ($$\hbox {L}\times \hbox {W}$$ L × W ): $$30\times 15$$ 30 × 15 , $$30\times 30$$ 30 × 30 , $$50\times 25$$ 50 × 25 and $$50\times 50\,\mu \hbox {m}^2$$ 50 × 50 μ m 2 , all of which are coupled to a $$2.3\,\mu \hbox {m}$$ 2.3 μ m thick Au absorber of area $$240\times 240\,\mu \hbox {m}^2$$ 240 × 240 μ m 2 . We have performed our characterization using our standard frequency domain multiplexing readout connecting only pixels at low frequencies, where nonlinear effects due to the AC biasing are negligible. Promising energy resolution has been obtained, for instance $$1.78\pm 0.10\,\hbox {eV}$$ 1.78 ± 0.10 eV and $$1.75\pm 0.10\,\hbox {eV}$$ 1.75 ± 0.10 eV at 5.9 keV for the $$50\times 25$$ 50 × 25 and $$50\times 50\,\mu \hbox {m}^2$$ 50 × 50 μ m 2 detectors respectively. Uniformity over a kilo-pixel array (of detectors with the same geometry) has been also studied, confirming the high quality of our fabrication process.

We present a characterization of the sensitivity of TES X-ray micro-calorimeters to environmental conditions under frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) readout. In the FDM scheme, each TES in a readout chain is in series with a LC band-pass filter and AC biased with an independent carrier at MHz range. Using TES arrays, cold readout circuitry and warm electronics fabricated at SRON and SQUIDs produced at VTT Finland, we characterize the sensitivity of the detectors to bias voltage, bath temperature and magnetic field. We compare our results with the requirements for the Athena X-IFU instrument, showing the compliance of the measured sensitivities. We find in particular that FDM is intrinsically insensitive to the magnetic field because of TES design and AC readout., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physics

We will report a full demonstration of the Fourier phase grating used as 4.7 THz local oscillator (LO) multiplexer for Galactic/Extragalactic ULDB Spectroscopic Terahertz Observatory (GUSTO). The design, modeling, tolerance analysis, and experimental characterization of the angular and intensity distributions among 2 × 4 output beams and the power efficiency will be presented. This is the first detailed study of a THz beam multiplexer, which will be actually integrated in an observatory.

We have studied THz heterodyne detection in sub-micrometer MgB2 hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers based on superconducting MgB2 films of [Formula: see text] (HEB-A), corresponding to a critical temperature ( Tc) of 33.9 K, and [Formula: see text] (HEB-B), corresponding to a [Formula: see text] of 38.4 K. We have measured a double sideband (DSB) receiver noise temperature of 2590 K for HEB-A and 2160 K for HEB-B at 1.6 THz and 5 K. By correcting for optical losses, both HEBs show receiver noise temperatures of ∼1600 K referenced to the front of anti-reflection (AR)-coated Si lenses. An intermediate frequency (IF) noise bandwidth of 11 GHz has been measured for both devices. The required local oscillator (LO) power is about 13 μW for both HEBs. We have also measured a DSB receiver noise temperature of 3290 K at 2.5 THz and 5 K but with an AR-coated lens optimized for 1.6 THz. Besides, we have observed a step-like structure in current voltage (IV) curves, which becomes weaker when the LO power increases and observable only in their differential resistance. Such a correlated structure appears also in the receiver output power as a function of voltage, which is likely due to electronic inhomogeneities intrinsic to the variations in the thickness of the MgB2 films. Different behavior in the IV curves around the low bias voltages, pumped with the same LO power at 1.6 and 5.3 THz, was observed for HEB-B, suggesting the presence of a high-energy σ-gap in the MgB2 film.

We have demonstrated a low noise superconducting MgB2 hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer working at the frequency of 5.3 terahertz (THz) with 20 K operation temperature. The bolometer consists of a 7 nm thick MgB2 submicrometer bridge contacted with a spiral antenna to couple THz radiation through a high resistive Si lens, and it has a superconducting critical temperature of 38 K. By using hot/cold blackbody loads and a Mylar beam splitter all in vacuum and applying a 5.25 THz far-infrared gas laser as a local oscillator, we measured a minimal double sideband receiver noise temperature of 3960 K at the LO power of 9.5 μW. This can be further reduced to 2920 K if a Si lens with an antireflection coating optimized at this frequency and a 3 μm beam splitter are used. The measured intermediate frequency (IF) noise bandwidth is 9.5 GHz. The low noise, wide IF bandwidth mixers, which can be operated in a compact, low dissipation Stirling cooler, are more suitable for space applications than the existing HEB mixers. Furthermore, we likely observed a signature of the double-gap in MgB2 by comparing current-voltage curves pumped at 5.3 and 1.6 THz.

We report on the development and demonstration of a MHz frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) technology to read out arrays of cryogenic transition edge sensor (TES) X-ray microcalorimeters. In our FDM scheme, TESs are AC-biased at different resonant frequencies in the low MHz range through an array of high-$Q$ LC resonators. The current signals of all TESs are summed at superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). We have demonstrated multiplexing for a readout of 31 pixels using room temperature electronics, high-$Q$ LC filters and TES arrays developed at SRON, and SQUID arrays from VTT. We repeated this on a second setup with 37 pixels. The summed X-ray spectral resolutions $@$ 5.9 keV are $\Delta E_{\rm 31 pix ~MUX}=2.14\pm0.03$ eV and $\Delta E_{\rm 37 pix ~MUX}=2.23\pm0.03$ eV. The demonstrated results are comparable with other multiplexing approaches. We are developing X-ray microcalorimeters as a backup option for the baseline detectors in the X-IFU instrument on board the ATHENA space mission led by ESA and to be launched in the early 2030s.5$\times$5 mixed arrays with TiAu transition-edge sensor (TES), which have different high aspect ratios and thus high resistances, have been designed and fabricated to meet the energy resolution requirement of the X-IFU instrument. Such arrays can also be used to optimise the performance of the Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) readout and lead to the final steps for the fabrication of a large detector array. In this work we present the experimental results from tens of the devices with an aspect ratio (length-to-width) ranging from 1-to-1 up to 6-to-1, measured in a single-pixel mode with a FDM readout system developed at SRON/VTT. We observed a nominal energy resolution of about 2.5 eV at 5.9 keV at bias frequencies ranging from 1 to 5 MHz. These detectors are proving to be the best TES microcalorimeters ever reported in Europe, being able to meet not only the requirements of the X-IFU instrument, but also those of other future challenging X-ray space missions, fundamental physics experiments, plasma characterization and material analysis.

Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) are the selected technology for future spaceborne X-ray observatories, such as Athena, Lynx, and HUBS. These missions demand thousands of pixels to be operated simultaneously with high energy-resolving power. To reach these demanding requirements, every aspect of the TES design has to be optimized. Here we present the experimental results of tests on different devices where the coupling between the x-ray absorber and the TES sensor is varied. In particular, we look at the effects of the diameter of the coupling stems and the distance between the stems and the TES bilayer. Based on measurements of the AC complex impedance and noise, we observe a reduction in the excess noise as the spacing between the absorber stem and the bilayer is decreased. We identify the origin of this excess noise to be internal thermal fluctuation noise between the absorber stem and the bilayer. Additionally, we see an impact of the coupling on the superconducting transition in the appearance of kinks. Our observations show that these unwanted structures in the transition shape can be avoided with careful design of the coupling geometry. Also the stem diameter appears to have a significant impact on the smoothness of the TES transition. We demonstrate multiplexing readout of 60 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers operating at 90 mK using a frequency division multiplexing readout chain with bias frequencies ranging from 1 to 3.5 MHz and with a typical frequency spacing of 32 kHz. The readout chain starts with a two-stage SQUID amplifier and has a noise level of 9.5 pA/ √{ Hz } . We compare current-voltage curves and noise spectra of TESs measured in a single-pixel mode and in a multiplexing mode. We also map the noise equivalent power (NEP) and the saturation power of the bolometers in both modes, where there are 43 pixels that do not show more than 10% difference in NEP and 5% in saturation power when measured in single pixel and multiplex modes. We have read out a TES with an NEP of 0.45 aW/ √{ Hz } in the multiplexing-mode, which demonstrates the capability of reading out ultra-low noise TES bolometer arrays for space applications.

Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS), a Chinese space mission, is proposed to find a large fraction of the so-called missing baryons, which would help us to understand more about the structure formation and evolution of the universe. Both theoretical and experimental results show that developing a highly efficient soft X-ray spectrometer over a large field of view and with a high energy resolution is the key to detect the “missing baryons”. X-ray microcalorimeters based on a transition-edge sensor (TES) array is required for HUBS, which aims to have 1 deg2 field of view (FoV) with 1’ angular resolution and 2 eV energy resolution optimized around 0.6 keV. Taking the high throughput X-ray optical focusing system on HUBS into account, the TES array is designed to have 60 x 60 pixels with an area of 1 mm2 for each pixel. The microcalorimeter consists of a TES, a weak thermal link to a heat bath, and a semi-metal or normal metal absorber to increase the X-ray absorption efficiency. When an X-ray photon with a given energy is absorbed, the temperature of the absorber increase, that can be monitored by measuring the resistance change of the TES. A bilayer of a superconductor and a normal metal is used to fabricate a TES with a critical temperature (Tc) of ~100 mK. The latter is set for the required energy resolution. For HUBS, both MoCu and TiAu TES technologies are considered in its development phase. Here we will focus on TiAu TES calorimeters designed and partially fabricated at SRON for HUBS. Recent demonstration of a resolution of 2.5 eV at 5.9 keV in an AC readout at SRON for X-IFU on board of Athena illustrates the promising of this technology. However, the challenging for the HUBS array is the large pixel size. We will report the design and fabrication of prototype HUBS calorimeters.

Large heterodyne receiver arrays (~100 pixel) allow astronomical instrumentations mapping more area within limited space mission lifetime. One challenge is to generate multiple local oscillator (LO) beams. Here, We succeeded in generating 81 beams at 3.86 THz by combining a reflective, metallic Fourier grating with an unidirectional antenna coupled 3rd-order distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL). We have measured the diffracted 81 beams by scanning a single pyroelectric detector at a plane, which is in the far field for the diffraction beams. The measured output beam pattern agrees well with a simulated result from COMSOL Multiphysics with respect to the angular distribution and power distribution among the 81 beams. We also derived the diffraction efficiency to be 94\pm 3\%, which is very close to what was simulated for a manufactured Fourier grating (97%). For an array of equal superconducting hot electron bolometer mixers, 64 out of 81 beams can pump the HEB mixers with similar power, resulting in receiver sensitivities within 10%. Such a combination of a Fourier grating and a QCL can create an LO with 100 beams or more, enabling a new generation of large heterodyne arrays for astronomical instrumentation. H. Sugai, et al., Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. Superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) are highly sensitive detectors. Based on the outstanding performance on spectral resolution, the X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU) instrument on-board athena will be equipped with a large array of TES-based microcalorimeters. For optimal performance in terms of the energy resolution, it is essential to limit undesirable nonlinearity effects in the TES detector. Weak-link behavior induced on the TES by superconducting leads is such a nonlinearity effect. We designed and fabricated smart test structures to study the effect of the superconducting leads on the intrinsic transition curve of our TiAu-based TES bilayer. We measured and analyzed the resistance versus temperature transition curves of the test structures. We found relations of long-distance proximity effects with TES length and different lead materials. Based on these results, we can redesign and further optimize our TES-based X-ray detectors.

Frequency-division multiplexing is the baseline read-out system for large arrays of superconducting transition-edge sensors (TES’s) under development for the X-ray and infrared instruments like X-IFU (Athena) and SAFARI, respectively. In this multiplexing scheme, the sensors are ac-biased at different frequencies from 1 to 5 MHz and operate as amplitude modulators. Weak superconductivity is responsible for the complex TES resistive transition, experimentally explored in great detail so far, both with dc- and ac-biased read-out schemes. In this paper, we will review the current status of our understanding of the physics of the TES’s and their interaction with the ac bias circuit. In particular, we will compare the behaviour of the TES nonlinear impedance, across the superconducting transition, for several detector families, namely: high-normal-resistance TiAu TES bolometers, low-normal-resistance MoAu TES microcalorimeters and high-normal-resistance TiAu TES microcalorimeters.

Dilution and adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators based on pulse tube cryocoolers are nowadays used in many low temperature physics experiments, such as atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopy, quantum computing, radiation detectors, and many others. A pulse tube refrigerator greatly simplifies the laboratory activities being a cryogen-free system. The major disadvantage of a pulse tube cooler is the high level of mechanical vibrations at the warm and cold interfaces that could substantially affect the performance of very sensitive cryogenic instruments. In this paper, we describe the performance of a very simple mechanical attenuation system used to eliminate the pulse-tube-induced low frequency noise of the superconducting transition-edge sensors under development for the instruments of the next generation of infra-red and X-ray space observatories.

The next generation of Far-infrared and X-ray space observatories will require detector arrays with thousands of transition edge sensor (TES) pixel. It is extremely important to have a tool that is able to characterize all the pixels and that can give a clear picture of the performance of the devices. In particular, we refer to those aspects that can affect the global energy resolution of the array: logarithmic resistance sensitivity with respect to temperature and current (α and β parameters, respectively), uniformity of the TESs and the correct understanding of the detector thermal model. Complex impedance measurement of a TES is the only technique that can give all this information at once, but it has been established only for a single pixel under DC bias. We have developed a complex impedance measurement method for TESs that are AC biased since we are using a MHz frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) system to readout an array. The FDM readout demands for some modifications to the complex-impedance technique and extra considerations, e.g. how to modulate a small fraction of the bias carrier frequencies in order to get a proper excitation current through the TESs and how to perform an accurate demodulation and recombination of the output signals. Also, it requires careful calibration to remove the presence of parasitic impedances in the entire readout system. We perform a complete set of AC impedance measurements for different X-ray TES microcalorimeters based on superconducting TiAu bilayers with or without normal metal Au bar structures. We discuss the statistical analysis of the residual between impedance data and fitting model to determine the proper calorimeter thermal model for our detectors. Extracted parameters are used to improve our understanding of the differences and capabilities among the detectors and additionally the quality of the array. Moreover, we use the results to compare the calculated noise spectra with the measured data.

We are developing a transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter array based on a Ti/Au superconducting bilayer, as a backup option for the X-IFU instrument on the Athena X-ray observatory. The array is read out by a frequency-division multiplexing readout system using a 1–5 MHz frequency band. Extensive research collaborations between NASA/Goddard and SRON have led to new design rules for microcalorimeters such as low resistivity of the superconductor bilayer, moderately high ohmic resistance of the TES by changing the aspect ratio and no extra metal strips. We have improved our detector fabrication process according to these design principles and produced TES arrays. Although single-pixel characterizations of these arrays are ongoing, the best energy resolution of 2.0 eV for 5.9 keV X-ray has been observed with a 120 × 20 μm2 TES with a normal resistance of 150 mΩ, biased at 2.2 MHz frequency. This shows that our Ti/Au TES array has a potential to fulfill the detector requirements of the X-IFU instrument.

Ultra-low-noise transition edge sensors (TES) with noise equivalent power lower than 2 $$\times $$ 10 $$^{-19}$$ W/Hz $$^{1/2 }$$ have been fabricated by SRON, which meet the sensitivity requirements for the far-infrared SAFARI instrument on space infrared telescope for cosmology and astrophysics. Our TES detector is based on a titanium/gold (Ti/Au) thermistor on a silicon nitride (SiN) island. The island is thermally linked with SiN legs to a silicon support structure at the bath temperature. The SiN legs are very thin (250 nm), narrow (500 nm), and long (above 300 $${\upmu } $$ m); these dimensions are needed in leg-isolated bolometers to achieve the required level of sensitivity. In this paper, we describe the latest fabrication process for our TES bolometers with improved sensitivity.

We report very-low-noise, fast-response, middle-scale multiplexing in a microwave superconducting quantum interference device multiplexer (MW-Mux) as a transition-edge sensor (TES) readout. Our MW-Mux is able to read 40 channels with 500 kHz sampling and has a low readout noise of 0.9 μ Φ 0 / Hz (where Φ 0 is the magnetic flux quantum), equivalent to 9 pA / Hz. By contrast, a multiplexer of less than 10 pixels with 500 kHz sampling and ∼ 2 μ Φ 0 / Hz readout noise has so far been reported in the literature. Owing to the 500 kHz sampling, our MW-Mux exhibits a fast response to detect a TES pulse with a rise time around 12 μ s. We demonstrated simultaneous readout of 38 pixels from an array of x-ray TES microcalorimeters. The measured full-width values at half-maximum spectral resolution ranged from 2.79 to 4.56 eV, with a median value of 3.30 eV at 5.9 keV, including a ∼ 10 % contribution of readout noise, i.e., 0.9–1.7 eV.

GUSTO will be a NASA balloon borne terahertz observatory to be launched from Antarctica in late 2021 for a flight duration of 100-170 days. It aims at reviewing the life cycle of interstellar medium of our galaxy by simultaneously mapping the three brightest interstellar cooling lines: [OI] at 4.7 THz, [CII] at 1.9 THz, and [NII] at 1.4 THz; along the 124 degrees of the galactic plane and through a part of the Large Magellanic Cloud. It will use three arrays of 4x2 mixers based on NbN hot electron bolometers (HEBs), which are currently the most sensitive mixers for high resolution spectroscopic astronomy at these frequencies. Here we report on the design of a novel 4.7 THz receiver for GUSTO. The receiver consists mainly of two subsystems: a 4×2 HEB quasi-optical mixer array and a 4.7 THz multi-beam LO. We describe the mixer array, which is designed as a compact monolithic unit. We show, for example, 10 potential HEB detectors with the state of the art sensitivity of 720 K measured at 2.5 THz. They have a small variation in sensitivity, being less than 3%, while also meet the LO uniformity requirements. For the multi-beam LO we demonstrate the combination of a phase grating and a single QCL at 4.7 THz, which generates 8 sub-LO beams, where the phase grating shows an efficiency of 75%. A preliminary concept for the integrated LO unit, including QCL, phase grating and beam matching optics is presented.

Transition Edge Sensors are ultra-sensitive superconducting detectors with applications in many areas of research, including astrophysics. The device consists of a superconducting thin film, often with additional normal metal features, held close to its transition temperature and connected to two superconducting leads of a higher transition temperature. There is currently no way to reliably assess the performance of a particular device geometry or material composition without making and testing the device. We have developed a proximity effect model based on the Usadel equations to predict the effects of device geometry and material composition on sensor performance. The model is successful in reproducing I −V curves for two devices currently under study. We use the model to suggest the optimal size and geometry for TESs, considering how small the devices can be made before their performance is compromised. In the future, device modelling prior to manufacture will reduce the need for time-consuming and expensive testing.

SRON is developing X-ray transition edge sensor (TES) calorimeters arrays, as a backup technology for X-IFU instrument on the ATHENA space observatory. These detectors are based on a superconducting TiAu bilayer TES with critical temperature of 100 mK on a 1 μm thick SiN membrane with Au or Au/Bi absorbers. Number of devices have been fabricated and measured using a Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) readout system with 1-5 MHz bias frequencies. We measured IV curves, critical temperature, thermal conductance, noise and also X-ray energy resolution at number of selected bias points. So far our best calorimeter shows 3.9 eV X-ray resolution at 6 keV. Here we present a summary of our results and the latest status of development of X-ray calorimeters at SRON.

LiteBIRD is a candidate for JAXA’s strategic large mission to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. It is planned to be launched in the 2020s with an H3 launch vehicle for three years of observations at a Sun-Earth Lagrangian point (L2). The concept design has been studied by researchers from Japan, U.S., Canada and Europe during the ISAS Phase-A1. Large scale measurements of the CMB B-mode polarization are known as the best probe to detect primordial gravitational waves. The goal of LiteBIRD is to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) with precision of δr < 0.001. A 3-year full sky survey will be carried out with a low frequency (34 - 161 GHz) telescope (LFT) and a high frequency (89 - 448 GHz) telescope (HFT), which achieve a sensitivity of 2.5 µK-arcmin with an angular resolution of ∼ 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The concept design of LiteBIRD system, payload module (PLM), cryo-structure, LFT and verification plan is described in this paper. © 2018 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Large Transition Edge Sensor (TES) arrays, required for the SAFARI imaging spectrometer on a planned SPICA space telescope, will be read out by Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM). All the pixels are connected with densely packed and equally long superconducting wires. Inductive coupling between wire pairs forms critical performance issues. Mutual inductance is one of the origins of electronic crosstalk among pixels. We find that available literature is not complete in providing suitable calculation methods for the required modelling. In this paper, we describe a relatively fast inductance calculation method for long, arbitrary wires, which can be useful for analyzing crosstalk between pixels and can also be important for guiding wiring layout design. The mutual inductance between two wire loops is calculated using Neumann's formula by a double summation of analytical expressions implemented in Python. Self-inductance for a multi-segment wire can be calculated by the summation of self-inductance of each wire segment and the mutual inductance between all segments. Combining this method with other modelling techniques, we have simulated the inductances of an entire 160 pixel FDM test setup.

We compare the results of simulated and measured power efficiency and far-field beam pattern, for two reflective Fourier phase gratings, designed to generate 2 x 2 and 2 x 4 beams respectively from a single-beam, coherent source at 1.4 THz. The designed surface structures were manufactured on aluminum plates by a computer numerical control (CNC) micro-milling machine. Despite small differences between the designed and fabricated gratings, we measured power efficiencies of both gratings to be around 70%, which is in a good agreement with the simulated values. We also find a good agreement between the simulated and measured diffracted beam size and spatial distribution. We demonstrate the application of both gratings as multiple beam local oscillators to simultaneously pump (or operate) a 4-pixel array of superconducting heterodyne mixers.

SRON is developing TES detectors based on a superconducting Ti/Au bilayer on a suspended SiN membrane for the short-wavelength band of the SAFARI instrument on SPICA mission. We have recently replaced the wet KOH etching of the Si substrate by deep reactive ion etching. The new process enables us to fabricate the detectors on the substrate and release the membrane at the very last step. Therefore the production of SAFARI large arrays (43 $$\,{\times }\,$$ 43) on thin SiN membrane (250 nm) is feasible. It also makes it possible to realize narrow supporting SiN legs of $$\le $$ 1 $$\upmu $$ m, which are needed to meet SAFARI NEP requirements. Here we report the current–voltage characteristics, noise performance and impedance measurement of these devices. The measured results are then compared with the distributed leg model that takes into account the thermal fluctuation noise due to the SiN legs. We measured a dark NEP of $$\sim $$ 0.7 aW/ $$\sqrt{\hbox {Hz}}$$ , which is 1.6 times higher than the theoretically expected phonon noise.

Recently we have reported on the effects of magnetic field on our low noise (NEP = 4 $$\times 10^{-19}$$ W/ $$\surd $$ Hz) [1] TiAu TES bolometers that are being developed at SRON for the SAFARI FIR Imaging Spectrometer on SPICA telescope that will be operated in three different wavelength bands: S-band for 30–60 $$\upmu \hbox {m}$$ , M-band for 60–110 $$\upmu \hbox {m}$$ and L-band for 110–210 $$\upmu \hbox {m}$$ . The arrays for the S- and M- band will be based on TiAu TES bolometer arrays, developed by SRON. The L-band array will be based on a MoAu TES bolometer developed by University of Cambridge. We have investigated the effect of the magnetic field on the current, responsivity, speed and critical current for both the TiAu and MoAu TES bolometers in our high accuracy magnetic field set-up. A clear difference in weak link behavior is observed between the two types of TES bolometers in both strength of the effect and period of the oscillations.

SRON is developing ultra-low noise Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) based on a superconducting Ti/Au bilayer on a suspended SiN island with SiN legs for the SAFARI instrument aboard the SPICA mission. We successfully fabricated TESs with very narrow (0.5-0.7 μm) and thin (0.25 μm) SiN legs on different sizes of SiN islands using deep reactiveion etching process. The pixel size is 840x840 μm2 and there are variety of designs with and without optical absorbers. For TESs without absorbers, we measured electrical NEPs as low as -19 W/√Hz with response time of 0.3 ms and reached the phonon noise limit. Using TESs with absorbers, we quantified the darkness of our setup and confirmed a photon noise level of 2x10-19 W/√Hz.

Athena is a European X-ray observatory, scheduled for launch in $$\sim $$ 2028. Athena will employ a high-resolution imaging spectrometer called X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU), consisting of an array of $$\sim $$ 4000 transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter pixels. For the readout of X-IFU, we are developing frequency domain multiplexing, which is the baseline readout system. In this paper, we report on the performance of a TES X-ray calorimeter array fabricated at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) at MHz frequencies for the baseline of X-IFU detector. During single-pixel AC bias characterization, we measured X-ray energy resolutions (at 6 keV) of about 2.9 eV at both 2.3 and 3.7 MHz. Furthermore, in the multiplexing mode, we measured X-ray energy resolutions of about 2.9 eV at 1.3 and 1.7 MHz.

SRON is developing the Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) readout and the ultra low NEP TES bolometers array for the infrared spectrometer SAFARI on board of the Japanese space mission SPICA. The FDM prototype of the instrument requires critical and complex optimizations. For single pixel characterization under AC bias we are developing a simple FDM system working in the frequency range from 1 to 5 MHz, based on the open loop read-out of a linearized two-stage SQUID amplifier and high Q lithographic LC resonators. We describe the details of the experimental set-up required to achieve low power loading (< 1 fW) and low noise (NEP $\sim 10^{-19} W/Hz^{1/2}$) in the TES bolometers. We conclude the paper by comparing the performance of a $4 \cdot 10^{-19} W/Hz^{1/2}$ TES bolometer measured under DC and AC bias., 6 pages, 5 figures

Transition edge sensors (TES) are the chosen detector technology for the SAFARI imaging spectrometer on the SPICA telescope. The TES are required to have an NEP of 2–3 × 10?19 W/? Hz to take full advantage of the cooled mirror. SRON has developed TiAu TES bolometers for the short wavelength band (30–60 ?m). The TES are on SiN membranes, in which long and narrow legs act as thermal links between the TES and the bath. We present a distributed model that accounts for the heat conductance and the heat capacity in the long legs that provides a guideline for designing low noise detectors. We report our latest results that include a measured dark NEP of 4.2×10?19 W/? Hz and a saturation power of about 10 fW.

SAFARI is an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer for 35–200 μm under development for flight on the Japanese IR-satellite SPICA (2018). The 3.25 m diameter actively cooled telescope (−19 W/√Hz in order not to be limiting the sensitivity. The instrument will utilize three TES-based detector arrays, covering the 2×2 arcmin field-of-view in three octaves of wave length. This contribution will present an overview of the detector sub-system, i.e.: the detector arrays and radiation coupling, the focal plane assembly, the amplification chain and the frequency-domain- multiplexed electronics. The focus will be on the implications on the system design of the readout under the stringent power dissipation, heat load, and weight limitations.

We measured the noise equivalent power (NEP) of an ultra-sensitive membrane-isolated transition-edge sensor (TES) designed for the SpicA FAR Infrared instrument (SAFARI) along with several Johnson noise Thermometry Devices (JTDs) simultaneously in a “dark” experimental setup. Our goal was to characterize the dark power PD present in our experimental setup and its effect on the measured NEP. By employing resistive attenuators, filters, lossy coaxial connections, and a light-tight box, we reduced PD to 0.25 fW in our setup. For the TES, G was measured to be (325±25) fW/K at TC=78 mK giving an upper-limit expected NEP of (3.5±0.25)×10-19 W/Hz1/2. We measured an actual NEP on the TES equal to (6.5±1.5)×10-19 W/Hz1/2, which is approximately double the expected value and likely due to residual electrical dark power in our setup.

SRON is developing Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) for the read-out of transition edge sensor (TES) soft x-ray microcalorimeters for the XMS instrument of the International X-ray Observatory and far-infrared bolometers for the SAFARI instrument on the Japanese mission SPICA. In FDM the TESs are AC voltage biased at frequencies from 0.5 to 6 MHz in a superconducting LC resonant circuit and the signal is read-out by low noise and high dynamic range SQUIDs amplifiers. The TES works as an amplitude modulator. We report on several AC bias experiments performed on different detectors. In particular, we discuss the results on the characterization of Goddard Space Flight Center x-ray pixels and SRON bolometers. The paper focuses on the analysis of different read-out configurations developed to optimize the noise and the impedance matching between the detectors and the SQUID amplifier. A novel feedback network electronics has been developed to keep the SQUID in flux locked loop, when coupled to superconducting high Q circuits, and to optimally tune the resonant bias circuit. The achieved detector performances are discussed in view of the instrument requirement for the two space missions.

Results of study optical performance of single pixel transition edge sensor (TES) bolometer presented at wavelength band 30-60 μm are presented. FIR radiation is coupled into a multimode horn with entrance aperture of 450 μm, length 4.5 mm and exit aperture of 45 μm , which feeds a metal integrating cavity containing the detector. The radiation band is defined by a pair of lowpass and highpass mesh filters in front of the horn. Here we present measurements of optical noise equivalent power (NEP), optical efficiency, dynamic range and time constant. The results show that measured TES detectors are close to meeting the requirement of the “Band S” of SAFARI FTS imaging instrument on the SPICA mission.

5 páginas, 6 figuras, 1 tabla.-- et al., We fabricated and characterized a low thermal conductance (G) transition edge sensor (TES). The device is based on a superconducting Ti/Au bilayer deposited on a suspended SiN membrane. The critical temperature of the device is 155 mK. The low thermal conductance is realized by using narrow SiN ring-like supporting structures. All measurements were performed having the device in a light-tight box, which to a great extent eliminates the loading of the background radiation. We measured the current-voltage (IV) characteristics of the device in different bath temperatures and determine the thermal conductance (G) to be equal to 1.66 pW/K. This value corresponds to a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 1×10-18 W/√Hz. The current noise and complex impedance are also measured at different bias points at 25 mK bath temperature. The measured electrical (dark) NEP is 2×10-18 W/√Hz, which is about a factor of 2 higher than what is expected from the thermal conductance that comes out of the IV curves analysis. We also measured the complex impedance of the same device at several bias points. Fitting a simple first order thermal-electrical model to the measured data, we find an effective time constant of about 62 μs and a thermal capacity of 3 fJ/K., This work was supported in part by ESA TRP under Contract ITT-1-5922/08/NL/EM TES spectrometer.

We present measurements of the frequency noise and resonance frequency temperature dependence in planar superconducting resonators on both silicon and sapphire substrates. We show, by covering the resonators with sputtered SiOx layers of different thicknesses, that the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency scales linearly with thickness, whereas the observed increase in noise is independent of thickness. The frequency noise decreases when increasing the width of the coplanar waveguide in NbTiN on hydrogen passivated silicon devices, most effectively by widening the gap. We find up to an order of magnitude more noise when using sapphire instead of silicon as substrate. The complete set of data points towards the noise being strongly affected by superconductor-dielectric interfaces.

We present measurements of the quasiparticle lifetime using optical pulses in the temperature range of 50 mK–1 K as well as measurements of the noise spectrum under continuous illumination in planar tantalum resonators. When decreasing the temperature the quasiparticle lifetime increases until it enters a saturation regime, reaching lifetime values of up to 35 μs at around 650 mK which decrease to a value of around 25 μs below a temperature of 350 mK. The noise spectrum follows a single pole Lorentzian spectrum, indicating that the quasiparticle lifetime is the only relevant timescale.
