Abstract: Jet production properties at s = 540 GeV have been measured in the UA2 detector at the CERN pp Collider. Results on the total transverse momentum of the jet system, on the parton density in the nucleon (structure function) and on the two-jet angular distributions are reported. The data are compared with QCD predictions and extrapolations from lower energy experiments. © 1984.

Abstract: Fragmentation properties of a sample of two-jet events measured by the UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider are described. The energy flow is compared with different model predictions. The charged particle multiplicity in jets is found to exceed extrapolations from lower energy e+e− jet data.

Abstract: The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Abstract: Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

Abstract: The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results., Submitted to the New Journal of Physics

Abstract: A large scale prototype of a liquid argon accordion calorimeter, conceived as a sector of a full LHC Barrel detector and consisting of an electromagnetic and a hadronic section, has been constructed and tested at the CERN SPS with electron and pion beams in the energy range 10-287 GeV. The energy resolution measured for electrons is 10%/square-root E[GeV] with a local constant of 0.2%. Preliminary results on the hadronic section, which for this first exposure had only half of its transverse coverage, look encouraging and show that the calorimeter behaves according to the design figures.

Abstract: A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.

Abstract: The process pp→evγ+X is studied as √s=630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling. We find κ=1+2.6−2.2 and λ=0+1.7−1.8 and their 95% confidence limits −3.5

Abstract: A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb−1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Abstract: The large sample of W→eν events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s . From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M 2 w )=0.123±0.0.18( stat .)±0.017 ( syst .) .

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg /g =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+→τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Abstract: The inclusive jet cross-section has been measured at the CERN p p Collider ( s = 630 GeV ) as a function of the jet transverse momentum (pT) and pseudorapidity (η) for pT values up to 180 GeV and for−2 825 GeV (95% CL) is set on the quark compositeness scale Λc.

Abstract: The transverse momentum distributions ofW andZ bosons produced in$\bar pp$ collisions at$\sqrt s = 630 GeV$ are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction ofW bosons produced withpT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)−1.3+0.9(syst)%.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment has collected large samples of W and Z events during recent runs at the CERN p p Collider at s = 630 GeV . These samples have been used to perform precise measurements of the masses of the W and Z bosons. After a careful analysis of systematic errors, an improved result is obtained for the mass ratio mwmz. This provides a new value for the weak mixing parameter sin2θw. Furthermore, it can be combined with recent measurements of the Z mass from e+e− colliders to give an absolute measurement of the W mass, leading to the result mw=80.49±0.43 (stat) ± 0.24 (syst) GeV.

Abstract: Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e + e − decays. The measured cross sections are σ = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σ = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38 −0.72 +0.82 (stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross-sections for single and double prompt photon production in p p interactions at s = 630 GeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 13.2 pb−1. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The signal from double prompt photon production has a statistical significance of 4.3 standard deviations.

Abstract: The process t-H+b, H+ --> tau+nu, tau+ --> hadrons + nuBar and its charge conjugate are investigated by seeking an excess in number of observed theta's beyond that expected from the standard model under the assumption of e-tau-universality. No such excess is found and new regions of the m(H)-m(t) plane are excluded for B(H+ --> tau(nu) = 0.5 and 1.O. In addition, the ratio of couplings of the tau and eto the W is precisely measured as g-tau(W)/g-e(W) = 1.02 +/- 0.04(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.).

Abstract: The W and Z bosons masses, m(W) and m(Z), are measured using samples of W --> ev and Z --> e+e- decays observed in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The ratio is found to be m(W)/m(Z) = 0.8813 +/- 0.0036 +/- 0.0019. This gives a value sin2 theta(w) = 0.2234 +/- 0.0064 +/- 0.0033, and in combination with precise m(Z) measurements from LEP yields m(W) = 80.35 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.17 GeV. This result is in good agreement with other experiments, and with the standard model for a top quark mass lighter than 250 GeV.

Abstract: Summary form only given. A research and development program is being conducted in view of realizing an electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The authors report on tests on fast electronics, coupled to an electromagnetic prototype calorimeter built with an accordion structure. Three different types of preamplifiers have been used. In two (Si and GaAs hybrids), the preamplifier is operated in liquid argon. In the third one, a common based (Si JFET or GaAs) transistor is in the liquid, the charge preamplifier being outside the cryostat, after about 6 m of 50- Omega cable. The shaping amplifier uses RC-CR filtering. The response to a short current pulse peaks after about 20 ns. When the system is connected to the calorimeter, the liquid argon signals peak, as expected, after 30 ns. Noise, linearity, and cross-talk between channels were investigated. First results from an exposure of the calorimeter to electrons of energy 30 to 175 GeV were obtained. >

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays of W and Z bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The large sample of W→ev events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp̄ collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s. From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M W 2) = 0.123 ± 0.0.18 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.).

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of the W decaying to τ and e leptons is measured using {Mathematical expression} collisions at {Mathematical expression} GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to the W is then determined to be g τ W/g e W=0.997±0.0 56 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay mode Z→τ +→τ + is observed and also found to be consistent with e-τ universality. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: A search for supersymmetric decays of the Z boson into a pair of scalar electrons or winos (partners of the electron and W boson) has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p collider at s = 630 GeV . The analysis of the sample of electron pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb −1 , shows no evidence for such exotic decays. The 90% confidence level lower mass limits obtained exclude selectron masses up to e40 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light photino, and wino masses up to 45 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light scalar neutrino.

Abstract: A search has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at s =630 GeV for multi-jet events with large transverse momentum imbalance in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb−1. Under the assumption that the photino is the lightest stable supersymmetric (SUSY) particle, the data have been used to deduce lower limits in a minimal SUSY model for the squark ( m q ) and the gluino ( m g ) masses. The 90% CL bounds are m g > 74 GeV independent of m g , m g > 79 GeV independent of m g , and and m> 106 GeV for m q =m q =m .

Abstract: The transverse momentum distributions of W and Z bosons produced in {Mathematical expression} collisions at {Mathematical expression} are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction of W bosons produced with pT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)-1.3+0.9(syst)%. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The upgraded UA 2 detector has collected data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 7.5 pb−1 from$\bar pp$ collisions at a centre of mass energy of 630 GeV during 1988 and 1989. A search has been performed for the production and decay of the top quark (t) or a member of a hypothetical fourth family (b′). No evidence has been found for such processes. Using the expected rates for production and decay branching ratios from the Standard Model, this implies that the top quark mass is greater than 69(71) GeV/c2, and that theb′ mass is greater than 54(57) GeV/c2, at 95(90)% confidence.

Abstract: The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

Abstract: A prototype lead-liquid-argon electromagnetic calorimeter with parallel plates and Accordion geometry has been equipped with high speed readout electronics and tested with electron and muon beams at the CERN SPS. For a response peaking time of about 35 ns, fast enough for operation at the future hadron colliders, the energy resolution for electrons is 9.6%/√E[GeV] with a local constant term of 0.3% and a noise contribution of 0.33 E[ GeV ] . The spatial accuracy achieved with a detector granularity of 2.7 cm is 3.7 mm E[ GeV ] and the angular resolution 12 mrad at 60 GeV.

Abstract: A novel geometry liquid argon calorimeter with accordion-shaped electrodes and converter plates has been recently conceived. Such a design allows for a fast readout and for a high granularity over large volumes with minimal dead spaces, properties which are considered essential for operation at the future hadron colliders. The first electromagnetic prototype based on this scheme has been built and tested at the CERN SPS. For a response peaking time of 140 ns an energy resolution of 10%/√ E (GeV) and a space resolution of 4.4 mm/√ E (GeV) with 2.7 cm cell size were achieved for electrons. A few preliminary results from a test with fast readout (response peaking time of less than 40 ns) are also presented.

Abstract: The first prototype of a lead—liquid-argon e.m. calorimeter with accordion-shaped absorber and electrode plates has been built and tested with electron and muon beams at the CERN SPS. This novel geometry combines good granularity with high readout speed and minimal dead space. Abstract: From an integrated luminosity of ∫ L d t = 116 nb -1 , 10events are found which contain an electron pair of mass in the range 12 ee GeV c 2 and electron transverse momenta p T e > 5 GeV c . Abstract: Using a sample of events collected by UA2 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 116 nb −1 . we have searched for electron-“neutrino” pairs in which the transverse momenta of the electron and of the “neutrino” exceed 15 GeV/c and 25 GeV/c respectively. A total of 35 events are observed in low background conditions. Most events can be interpreted in terms of W ± production from QCD processes. Events in which the observation of hard jets makes this interpretation unlikely are described in detail. Possible sources of background contamination are considered.

Abstract: The distribution of total tranverse energy ΣET over the pseudorapidity interval −1 < η < 1 and an azimuthal range Δφ=300° has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider (s = 540 GeV) using a highly segmented total absorption caloriter. In the events with very large ΣET (ΣET⪆60 GeV) most of the transverse energy is found to be contained in small angular regions as expected for high transverse momentum hadron jets. We discuss the properties of a sample of two-jet events with invariant two-jet masses up to 140 GeVc2 and we measure the cross section for inclusive jet production in the range of jet transverse momenta between 15 and 60 GeVc.

Abstract: Transverse momentum distributions of pions, kaons and protons have been measured around 90° in the UA2 detector at the SPS p p collider, at a CM energy of 540 GeV. All the cross sections have increased by more than a factor of 2 over those measured at ISR energies and exhibit a flatter behaviour with respect to transverse momentum.

Abstract: In an experiment in the CERN-SPS charged-hyperon beam, the main Ω − decay branching ratios have been measured to be Γ(Ω − →Λ K − /Γ( all )=0.686±0.013 , Γ(Ω −1 →Ξ 0 π − )/Γ( all )=0.234±0.013 , Γ(Ω − →Ξ − π 0 )/Γ( all )=0.080±0.008 . The relative branching ratio of the two Ξπ modes provides a test of the ΔI= 1 2 rule in decuplet-octet transitions. A search has also been made for the rare decay modes Ω − →Λπ − , Ω − →Ξ − γ, Ω − →Ξ − π + π − and Ω − →Ξ 0 e − ν .

Abstract: In an experiment at the CERN-SPS charged-hyperon beam, a sample of 2500 Ω − → ΛK − decays has been collected at Ω− momenta of 98.5 and 115 GeV/c. The Ω− lifetime is found to be τ Ω = (0.822 ± 0.028) × 10 −10 s .

Abstract: The charged hyperon beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) has been used to collect data on semileptonic decays of Σ−, Ξ−, and Λ. In this article we report results on the$\sum \to ne\bar v$ decay mode. A magnetic channel selected 100 GeV/c (130 GeV/c) negatively charged particles produced in the forward direction by interaction of the 210 GeV/c (240 GeV/c) SPS proton beam on a BeO target. The Σ− hyperons were identified in a DISC Cerenkov counter, and the negatively charged decay particle was analysed by a magnetic spectrometer. The neutron direction was obtained from the Σ− decay vertex and from the impact point measured in a neutron detector. Electron-hadron discrimination was achieved by the combined use of lead-glass and transition radiation detectors. The$\sum \to ne\bar v$ branching ratio measurement gave a value of (0.96±0.05) ×10−3. Measurements of the centre-of-mass distributions (baryon kinetic energy, electron-antineutrino correlation, and Dalitz plot distributions) yield the axial-vector to vector form factor ratio |g1/f1|=0.34 ±0.05. From the study of the electron momentum spectrum, the negative sign ofg1/f1, which is expected within the Cabibbo theory framework, is favoured by at least 2.6 standard deviations. The effects ofq2-dependence off1 andg1 and of radiative corrections, the measurement of the weak magnetism form factorf2, and the effect of possible second-class current terms are discussed. Results on the other Ξ−, Σ−, and Λ semileptonic decays are reported in separate articles.

Abstract: The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN {Mathematical expression} collider ( {Mathematical expression}=540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate with pT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector boson W±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study the W production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector boson Z0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory. © 1984 Springer-Verlag.
