Abstract

The differential cross section for Z0 production, measured as a function of the boson's transverse momentum (pT), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p+p →W/Z+X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z0/γ⁎ differential cross section as a function of its pT in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z0/γ⁎ total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z0/γ⁎ TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Abstract

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from s=200 GeV p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios C4/C2, C5/C1, and C6/C2 decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios C5/C1 and C6/C2 approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in p+p collisions.

3. Trajectories and determinants of left ventricular ejection fraction after first myocardial infarction in current era of primary coronary interventions

Abstract

Background Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) is an independent predictor of adverse outcomes after myocardial infarction (MI). However, contemporary data from the PCI era of MI therapy on trajectories and determinants of EF are scarce. Purpose The present study aimed to describe the epidemiology of systolic dysfunction and EF recovery among consecutive patients hospitalized for their first MI. Methods Data from a single-centre prospectively-designed AMBITION registry of consecutive patients hospitalized for MI between years 2017 and 2021 at a large tertiary cardiology centre were utilized. Results Out of 1593 patients in the registry, 1065 were hospitalized for MI type I and had no previous history of heart failure (HF) or coronary artery disease. Revascularisation was performed in 93.5% of patients: 901 (84.6%) underwent PCI, 89 (8.4%) CABG and 6 (0.6%) both. At discharge, EF50% in 501 (47.0%), respectively. Patients with EF50% in 38 (22.9%) and improved to EF 40–50% in 45 (27.1%). Improvement in systolic function to EF>40% was predicted by lower severity of coronary artery atherosclerosis (GENSINI score), by higher discharge EF, by the lower leukocyte count, the absence of atrial fibrillation during MI hospitalization and glycemia level (Table 2). Recovery of systolic function was associated with lower mortality risk (log-rank p=0.012). Conclusion In the current era of primary coronary intervention, only 22% of patients after the first MI have EF below 40%. Of them, EF improves in 50%, and full recovery is observed in 23% of patients. Severity or coronary atherosclerosis, inflammatory response to MI, atrial fibrillation and glucose metabolism may all affect EF recovery. 4. Interleukin-6 predicts recovery of systolic function after myocardial infarction

Main funding source(s): Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic Background Interleukin (IL)-6 is an important mediator of the inflammatory response to acute myocardial infarction (MI). Increased IL-6 levels are associated with adverse outcomes after MI. However, there are only limited data on the association of IL-6 levels with recovery of systolic function after MI. Purpose The aim of the present study was to evaluate the independent predictive value of IL-6 level for recovery of systolic function among patients hospitalized for their first MI. Methods Consecutive patients without previous history of MI or cardiomyopathy with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤40% measured by transthoracic echocardiography upon hospital discharge and available follow-up LVEF evaluated between 3 months and one year since hospital discharge were selected from a prospective registry of MI patients (n=1323). Results In total, data from 183 patients (mean age 64.2±11.2, 29% female, mean EF upon discharge 32.6±5.8) were analyzed. In the multivariate linear regression, IL-6 level measured within 24 hours from the hospital admission was positively associated with NT-proBNP, maximal hs-Troponin T a glycemia level and negatively with female gender, total cholesterol and admission systolic blood pressure. During follow-up, LVEF increased by 6.1±9.0% and LVEF recovered to value >50% in 43 (23.5%) patients. In the multivariate analysis, LVEF improvement was predicted by lower IL-6, lower maximal troponin level, female gender, lower heart rate at the time of hospital admission and Killip class I. In the ROC analysis (AUC 0.72, p Conclusion The inflammatory response to MI, as assessed by IL-6, is associated with MI size, glucose and lipid metabolism and is lower in women. IL-6 independently predicts change in LVEF among patients with moderate to severe LV dysfunction. This supports previous findings that IL-6 inhibition can increase myocardial salvage after MI and identifies possible patients that may benefit from targeted therapy.

Abstract

Final design studies in preparation for manufacturing have been performed for functional components of the vacuum portion of the ITER Low-Field Side Reflectometer (LFSR). These components consist of an antenna array, electron cyclotron heating (ECH) protection mirrors, phase calibration mirrors, and vacuum windows. Evaluation of these components was conducted at the LFSR test facility and DIII-D. The antenna array consists of six corrugated-waveguide antennas for simultaneous profile, fluctuation, and Doppler measurements. A diffraction grating, incorporated into the plasma-facing miter bend, provides protection of sensitive components from stray ECH at 170 GHz. For in situ phase calibration of the LFSR profile reflectometer, an embossed mirror is incorporated into the adjacent miter bend. Measurements of the radiated beam profile indicate that these components have a small, acceptable effect on mode conversion and beam quality. Baseline transmission characteristics of the dual-disk vacuum window are obtained and are used to guide ongoing developments. Preliminary simulations indicate that a surface-relief structure on the window surfaces can greatly improve transmission. The workability of real-time phase measurements was demonstrated on the DIII-D profile reflectometer. The new automated real-time analysis agrees well with the standard post-processing routine.

Abstract

We report a measurement of exclusive J/ψ and ψ(2s) photoproduction in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV using the STAR detector. For the first time, (i) the ψ(2s) photoproduction in midrapidity at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider has been experimentally measured; (ii) nuclear suppression factors are measured for both the coherent and incoherent J/ψ production. At average photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 25.0 GeV, the coherent and incoherent J/ψ cross sections of Au nuclei are found to be 71±10% and 36±7%, respectively, of that of free protons. The stronger suppression observed in the incoherent production provides a new experimental handle to study the initial-state parton density in heavy nuclei. Data are compared with theoretical models quantitatively.

Abstract

Background: The highest mortality and morbidity worldwide is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), which has in background both environmental and genetic risk factors. Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) variability influences the risk of ASCVD in Africans, but little is known about the APOL1 and ASCVD in other ethnic groups., Methods: To investigate the role of APOL1 and ASCVD, we have genotyped four (rs13056427, rs136147, rs10854688 and rs9610473) APOL1 polymorphisms in a group of 1541 male patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and 1338 male controls., Results: Individual APOL1 polymorphisms were not associated with traditional CVD risk factors such as smoking, hypertension or diabetes prevalence, with BMI values or plasma lipid levels. Neither individual polymorphisms nor haplotypes were associated with an increased risk of ACS nor did they predict total or cardiovascular mortality over the 10.2 ± 3.9 years of follow-up., Conclusions: We conclude that APOL1 genetic variability has no major effect on risk of ACS in Caucasians., (© 2024 The Author(s). 8. A SNaPshot Assay for Determination of the Mannose-Binding Lectin Gene Variants and an Algorithm for Calculation of Haplogenotype Combinations.

Abstract

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency caused by the variability in the MBL2 gene is responsible for the susceptibility to and severity of various infectious and autoimmune diseases. A combination of six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has a major impact on MBL levels in circulation. The aim of this study is to design and validate a sensitive and economical method for determining MBL2 haplogenotypes. The SNaPshot assay is designed and optimized to genotype six SNPs (rs1800451, rs1800450, rs5030737, rs7095891, rs7096206, rs11003125) and is validated by comparing results with Sanger sequencing. Additionally, an algorithm for online calculation of haplogenotype combinations from the determined genotypes is developed. Three hundred and twenty-eight DNA samples from healthy individuals from the Czech population are genotyped. Minor allele frequencies (MAFs) in the Czech population are in accordance with those present in the European population. The SNaPshot assay for MBL2 genotyping is a high-throughput, cost-effective technique that can be used in further genetic-association studies or in clinical practice. Moreover, a freely available online application for the calculation of haplogenotypes from SNPs is developed within the scope of this project.

9. Genetic variants within telomere-associated genes, leukocyte telomere length and the risk of acute coronary syndrome in Czech women.

Abstract

The association between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been published in many reports, although almost exclusively in men. In our study we analysed the association between LTL and five selected variants within three candidate genes (TERC rs12696304; TERF2IP rs3784929 and rs8053257; UCP2 rs659366 and rs622064), which are not only involved in telomere-length maintenance but also potentially associated with higher risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in Czech women (505 cases and 642 controls). We detected significantly shorter LTL in women with ACS (P<0.001), but the difference disappeared after multiple adjustments. We did not find any significant associations between analysed variants and LTL, except for rs622064 within the UCP2 gene, in which case AA homozygotes had a higher LTL (P<0.04). Genotype frequencies of the analysed SNPs did not differ between controls and women with ACS. Variants within UCP2 (rs622064; CC vs. A allele carriers OR=1.61; 95% CI: 1.21-2.15, P<0.002) and within TERF2IP (rs8053257; A allele carriers vs. GG, OR=1.78; 95% CI: 1.07-3.18, P<0.03) were associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Abstract

Objectives: The body mass index (BMI) has been the most commonly applied clinical measure to characterise body composition in individuals. However, the BMI has been criticised as being an inaccurate measure of body fatness. Recently, a new index reflecting body composition, the Body Adiposity Index (BAI) was proposed. The BAI was calculated using the equation BAI=((hip circumference)/ ((height)1.5) - 18)., Aim: The aim of this study was to compare estimates of body fat content, i.e., body adiposity index (BAI), BMI, waist-hip ratio (WHR) and waist and hip circumferences, with respect to their ability to predict the percentage of body fat (PBF)., Results: To select an optimal surrogate for adiposity, we examined the correlation between body adiposity percentage as measured by BIA and several variables, including BAI, BMI and WHR. Correlations ranged from a high of 0.78 for BMI, 0.67 for BAI and 0.66 for waist circumference to a low value of 0.39 for the WHR index. The correlation between PBF and BAI (R=0.67, R2=0.45, p<0.001) and the correlation between PBF and BMI (R=0.78, R2=0.60, p<0.001) were of similar magnitude., Conclusion: Based on our results and those of other studies, we can say that the BAI index is not a universally valid index that could be used in the place of the BMI index in a Caucasian population; indeed, it would not accurately reflect body fat mass and thus could lead to an increased risk of obesity. Further, WHR index is not a suitable for an estimation of body fat.
