3. Cholinergic profiles in the Goettingen miniature pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) brain

Central cholinergic structures within the brain of the even-toed hoofed Goettingen miniature domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) were evaluated by immunohistochemical visualization of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and the low-affinity neurotrophin receptor, p75NTR. ChAT immunoreactive (-ir) perikarya were seen in the olfactory tubercle, striatum, medial septal nucleus, vertical and horizontal limbs of the diagonal band of Broca and the nucleus basalis of Meynert, medial habenular nucleus, zona incerta, neurosecretory arcuate nucleus, cranial motor nuclei III and IV, Edinger-Westphal nucleus, parabigeminal nucleus, pedunculopontine nucleus and laterodorsal tegmental nucleus. Cholinergic ChAT-ir neurons were also found within transitional cortical areas (insular, cingulate, and piriform cortices) and hippocampus proper. ChAT-ir fibers were seen throughout the dentate gyrus and hippocampus, in the mediodorsal, laterodorsal, anteroventral and parateanial thalamic nuclei, the fasciculus retroflexus of Meynert, basolateral and basomedial amygdaloid nuclei, anterior pretectal and interpeduncular nuclei, as well as select laminae of the superior colliculus. Double immunofluorescence demonstrated that virtually all ChAT-ir basal forebrain neurons were also p75NTR positive. The present findings indicate that the central cholinergic system in the miniature pig is similar to other mammalian species. Therefore, the miniature pig may be an appropriate animal model for preclinical studies of neurodegenerative diseases where the cholinergic system is compromised.

The Bruce effect is a widely studied reproductive phenomenon in rodents in which exposure of pregnant females to unknown males causes termination of the current pregnancy. The Bruce effect has been reported from numerous studies in the laboratory, and one field study with the promiscuous gray-tailed vole, Microtus canicaudus, failed to support it. We conducted a field study with the monogamous prairie vole, M. ochrogaster, to determine if complete replacement of the male population every 10–14 days affected pregnancy and juvenile recruitment. The mean days to first parturition for control and treatment females were 36.8 and 44.4 days. Fifty-five percent of control females and 33% of treatment females conceived within the first 14 days of the study. All control females and 79% of treatment females successfully delivered at least one litter. These differences between treatment and control populations provide minimal support for the Bruce effect when compared with results from laboratory studies. Nulliparous females may have experienced some pregnancy disruption, but not parous females. Removal of mates, rather than exposure to strange males, may have contributed more to the lower reproductive success of treatment females than exposure to strange males. Treatment females, however, had lower juvenile recruitment than controls, which may have been due to infanticide from strange males. Our results are more similar to those of the field study of the gray-tailed vole than predicted, based on laboratory studies of prairie voles.

Clinical Engineering within Ireland has developed significantly in recent years. This Engineering discipline has proven an essential component of the modern healthcare environment. Nationally, Clinical Engineers participate as key members within multidisciplinary teams of every Clinical specialty. The Clinical Engineering membership has developed to include participants from the areas of Healthcare institutions, community medicine, academia and the medical device industry. A national voluntary registration scheme is now established and will further contribute to the professional development of Clinical Engineering.

This presentation will document the management and project phases necessary for the establishment of an effective, operational wireless broadband system. A list of the various components of the system will be discussed, giving an indicative costing for each component. Also documented are both the technological and managerial challenges encountered during the implementation of this type of project in a developed country. The minimum utility and environmental conditions necessary for the operation of a wireless broadband system will be identified, for example power requirements etc., and the practicalities of having these available in a developing country will be reviewed. The possible applications of a broadband system in a developing healthcare system will be discussed. The use of broadband in applications such as telemedicine will also be reviewed. In conclusion, recommendations on the suitability and possible limitations of broadband for use in a developing country will be presented.

There are additional issues to those typically encountered in developed countries when transferring technology from developed to developing countries. However, it was found possible to derive a range of selection criteria, which can be modified for any particular situation. It was found that the paper-based systems, because of their robustness and ease of use, were more appropriate for developing countries. However, it is believed the effort should be made to use computer-based systems where viable, because of their extra features and reporting facilities. (5 pages)
