1. Parallel flows as a key component to interpret Super-X divertor experiments

Abstract

The Super-X Divertor (SXD) is an alternative divertor configuration leveraging total flux expansion at the Outer Strike Point (OSP). While the extended 2-Point Model (2PM) predicts facilitated detachment access and control in the SXD configuration, these attractive features are not always retrieved experimentally. These discrepancies are at least partially explained by the effect of parallel flows which, when self-consistently included in the 2PM, reveal the role of total flux expansion on the pressure balance and weaken the total flux expansion effect on detachment access and control, compared to the original predictions. This new model can partially explain the discrepancies between the 2PM and experiments performed on tokamak à configuration variable (TCV), in ohmic L-mode scenarios, which are particularly apparent when scanning the OSP major radius Rt. In core density ramps in lower Single-Null (SN) configuration, the impact of Rt on the CIII emission front movement in the divertor outer leg—used as a proxy for the plasma temperature in the divertor—is substantially weaker than 2PM predictions. Furthermore, in OSP radial sweeps in lower and upper SN configurations, in ohmic L-mode scenarios with a constant core density, the peak parallel particle flux density at the OSP is almost independent of Rt, while the 2PM predicts a linear dependence. Finally, analytical and numerical modeling of parallel flows in the divertor is presented. It is shown that an increase in total flux expansion can favour supersonic flows at the OSP. Parallel flows are also shown to be relevant by analysing SOLPS-ITER simulations of TCV.

Abstract

After a long device enhancement phase, scientific operation resumed in 2022. The main new device components are the water cooling of all plasma facing components and the new water-cooled high heat flux divertor units. Water cooling allowed for the first long-pulse operation campaign. A maximum discharge length of 8 min was achieved with a total heating energy of 1.3 GJ. Safe divertor operation was demonstrated in attached and detached mode. Stable detachment is readily achieved in some magnetic configurations but requires impurity seeding in configurations with small magnetic pitch angle within the edge islands. Progress was made in the characterization of transport mechanisms across edge magnetic islands: Measurement of the potential distribution and flow pattern reveals that the islands are associated with a strong poloidal drift, which leads to rapid convection of energy and particles from the last closed flux surface into the scrape-off layer. Using the upgraded plasma heating systems, advanced heating scenarios were developed, which provide improved energy confinement comparable to the scenario, in which the record triple product for stellarators was achieved in the previous operation campaign. However, a magnetic configuration-dependent critical heating power limit of the electron cyclotron resonance heating was observed. Exceeding the respective power limit leads to a degradation of the confinement.

3. Global fluid simulation of plasma turbulence in stellarators with the GBS code

Abstract

The implementation of three-dimensional magnetic fields, such as the ones of stellarators, in the GBS code (Ricci et al 2012 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 54 124047; Giacomin et al 2022 J. Comput. Phys. 464 111294) is presented, and simulation results are discussed. The geometrical operators appearing in the drif-reduced Braginskii equations evolved by GBS are expanded considering the typical parameter ordering of stellarator configurations. It turns out that most of the operators have a similar structure as the one implemented in the tokamak axisymmetric version of the code. In particular, the perpendicular laplacian only acts on the poloidal plane, which avoids the need of a three-dimensional solver for the electrostatic potential. The simulation of an island divertor stellarator is then presented, showing the derivation of the magnetic equilibrium in detail and extending the results in (Coelho et al 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 074004). Although the island magnetic field-lines divert the plasma towards the strike points of the walls, the islands do not seem to have a significant impact on the turbulence properties. The dominant mode, identified as interchange-driven, is field-aligned and breaks the stellarator toroidal symmetry. The radial and poloidal extensions of the mode are of the same order, in contrast to typical tokamak simulations. This has consequences on the poloidal dependence of turbulent transport.

4. Plasma turbulence simulations in a diverted tokamak with applied resonant magnetic perturbations

Abstract

The first results of three-dimensional, flux-driven, electrostatic, global, two-fluid turbulence simulations of a diverted tokamak configuration with applied resonant magnetic perturbations generated by a set of saddle coils are presented. The simulations of an L-mode plasma show that the heat flux pattern on the divertor targets is affected by the resonant magnetic perturbations, as a result of the interplay between turbulent cross field transport and parallel flows. The simulation results reveal the potential of resonant magnetic perturbations to reduce the heat flux to the wall. In fact, the peak of the toroidally- and time-averaged heat flux as well as its value integrated over the divertor decrease as the amplitude of the magnetic perturbation increases, while the plasma sources are held constant.

Abstract

Recent TCV experiments confirm the predicted formation of an electric potential well, below the magnetic X-point, in configurations with unfavorable Btfield direction (ion ∇Bdrift away from the divertor), that substantially reshapes the typical divertor E×Bflow pattern. The local charge balance ∇⋅jin the private flux region (PFR) of diverted tokamak plasmas has been previously argued to be dominated by parallel and diamagnetic currents. This hypothesis is tested herein in TCV discharges by comparison with SOLPS-ITER simulations, fully accounting for drifts and currents. Simulated parallel currents correctly capture measured current profile characteristics for both targets and both Bt-directions, whereas those omitting drifts fail. It is shown that the resulting parallel currents dictate the electric fields in the PFR for low temperature (detached divertor) conditions resulting in locally negative electric plasma potential in configurations with unfavorable H-mode access.

6. Non-linear simulations of the TCV Scrape-Off Layer

Abstract

To investigate the mechanisms leading to the heat deposition onto the first wall in the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL), we perform dedicated numerical non-linear simulations of the SOL plasma dynamics of a TCV discharge using the GBS code. The simulated parallel heat flux profiles on the limiter agree qualitatively with the experimental ones obtained by means of infrared thermography, showing a double scale length. Non-ambipolar currents are found to flow to the limiter, consistently with the experiments. The contribution of the latter to the total heat flux is discussed. Abstract

We report on the initial validation of the novel code FENNECS, which simulates the spontaneous formation of trapped electron clouds in coaxial geometries with strong externally applied azimuthal flows and in the presence of a residual neutral gas. For this purpose, a realistic gyrotron electron gun geometry is used in the code, and a self-consistent electron cloud build-up is simulated. The predicted electronic current resulting from these clouds that is collected on the gun electrodes is simulated and successfully compared with the previous experimental results for configurations with different externally applied electric and magnetic fields. These different configurations effectively modify the size and depth of the trapping potential wells responsible for the confinement of the electron clouds. Abstract

We show that the variational energy principle of multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamic (MRxMHD) model can be used to predict finite-pressure linear tearing instabilities. In this model, the plasma volume is sliced into sub-volumes separated by "ideal interfaces", and in each volume the magnetic field relaxes to a Taylor state where the pressure gradient $\nabla p = 0$. The MRxMHD model is implemented in the SPEC code so that the equilibrium solution in each region is computed while the preserving force balance across the interfaces. As SPEC computes the Hessian matrix (a discretized stability matrix), the stability of an MRxMHD equilibrium can also be computed with SPEC. In this article, using SPEC, we investigate the effect of local pressure gradients and the $\nabla p = 0$ in the vicinity of the resonant surface of a tearing mode. For low beta plasma, we have been able to illustrate a relationship between the resistive singular layer theory [Coppi et al. (1966) Nucl. Fusion 6 101, Glasser et al. The Physics of Fluids 18, 875-888 (1975)], and the MRxMHD model. Within the singular layer, the volume-averaged magnetic helicity and the flux-averaged toroidal flux are shown to be the invariants for the linear tearing modes in SPEC simulations. Our technique to compute MRxMHD stability is first tested numerically in cylindrical tokamak and its application in toroidal geometry is demonstrated. 9. Global fluid simulation of plasma turbulence in a stellarator with an island divertor

Abstract

Results of a three-dimensional, flux-driven, electrostatic, global, two-fluid turbulence simulation for a five-field period stellarator with an island divertor are presented. The numerical simulation is carried out with the GBS code, recently extended to simulate plasma turbulence in non-axisymmetric magnetic equilibria. The vacuum magnetic field used in the simulation is generated with the theory of Dommaschk potentials, and describes a configuration with a central region of nested flux surfaces, surrounded by a chain of magnetic islands, similar to the diverted configurations of W7-X. The heat outflowing from the core reaches the island region and is transported along the magnetic islands, striking the vessel walls, which correspond to the boundary of the simulation domain. The radial transport of particles and heat is found to be mainly driven by a field-aligned coherent mode with poloidal number m = 4. The analysis of this mode, based on non-local linear theory considerations, shows its ballooning nature. In contrast to tokamak simulations and experiments, where blobs often contribute to transport, we do not observe the presence of intermittent transport events.

Abstract

The tokamak à configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019–20 campaign its configurational flexibility has been enhanced with the installation of removable divertor gas baffles, its diagnostic capabilities with an extensive set of upgrades and its heating systems with new dual frequency gyrotrons. The gas baffles reduce coupling between the divertor and the main chamber and allow for detailed investigations on the role of fuelling in general and, together with upgraded boundary diagnostics, test divertor and edge models in particular. The increased heating capabilities broaden the operational regime to include T e/T i ∼ 1 and have stimulated refocussing studies from L-mode to H-mode across a range of research topics. ITER baseline parameters were reached in type-I ELMy H-modes and alternative regimes with ‘small’ (or no) ELMs explored. Most prominently, negative triangularity was investigated in detail and confirmed as an attractive scenario with H-mode level core confinement but an L-mode edge. Emphasis was also placed on control, where an increased number of observers, actuators and control solutions became available and are now integrated into a generic control framework as will be needed in future devices. The quantity and quality of results of the 2019–20 TCV campaign are a testament to its successful integration within the European research effort alongside a vibrant domestic programme and international collaborations.

Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Abstract

The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

Abstract

In the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator, the vacuum rotational transform, ι, has a flat radial profile and does not cross any major rational resonance. Nevertheless, during plasma operation the ι‐profile can be strongly modified by electron cyclotron current drive in such a way that the resulting ι-profile passes through low-order rational values, and this can trigger magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) events. Indeed, W7-X plasmas are sometimes subject to repetitive collapses of core confinement, which can be observed regardless of the direction in which the EC current is driven. Even though the origin of these MHD instabilities is under investigation, the crashes may be connected to the formation of magnetic islands and magnetic reconnection. In the present work, we try to shed light on the dynamics of different events happening during the course of sawtooth cycles in W7-X by proposing a model that combines a slow current diffusion with a recipe for fast relaxation that conserves the corresponding helical flux (Kadomtsev 1975 Fiz. Plazmy 1 710–15). We also propose a simple model based on Taylor relaxation (Taylor 1974 Phys. Rev. Lett. 33 1139), (Taylor 1986 Rev. Mod. Phys. 58 741) to predict the nonlinear redistribution of plasma current caused by the largest of the observed events.

Abstract

Parallel convection and E × B drifts act together to redistribute heat between the strike-points in the low field side snowflake minus (LFS SF−). The cumulative heat convection from both mechanisms is enhanced near the secondary X-point and is shown to dominate over heat conduction, partly explaining why the LFS SF− distributes power more evenly than the single null (SN) or other snowflake (SF) configurations. Pressure profiles at the entrance of the divertor are strongly affected by the position of the secondary X-point and magnetic field direction indicating the importance of E × B drifts. Pressure drops of up to 50% appear between the outer-midplane (OMP) and the divertor entrance enhancing the role of parallel heat convection. The electron temperature and density profiles and the radial turbulent fluxes measured at the OMP are largely unaffected by the changes in divertor geometry, even on flux surfaces where the connection length is infinite.

Abstract

A theory-based scaling for the characteristic length of a circular, limited tokamak scrape-off layer (SOL) is obtained by considering the balance between parallel losses and non-linearly saturated resistive ballooning mode turbulence driving anomalous perpendicular transport. The SOL size increases with plasma size, resistivity, and safety factor q. The scaling is verified against flux-driven nonlinear turbulence simulations, which reveal good agreement within a wide range of dimensionless parameters, including parameters closely matching the TCV tokamak. An initial comparison of the theory against experimental data from several tokamaks also yields good agreement.

Abstract

Fluid simulations of the boundary of fusion plasmas predict the formation of an electric potential well in the vicinity of the X-point in detached divertor conditions with Bt in the unfavorable direction for H-mode access. This potential well arises when the parallel current in the divertor is dominated by Pfirsch-Schlüter currents and is closely related to previously reported potential hill formation in favorable Bt direction. A simple analytic model describes its dependence on plasma shape and divertor conditions. The poloidal particle transport in the divertor is dominated by the parallel flow, while cross-field particle transport in the vicinity of the separatrix is argued to be E × B-dominated, even in the presence of turbulence. With a potential well, the E × B-flow differs qualitatively from the classic drift pattern with the near-SOL poloidal E × B-flux enhanced and reversed while radially widening/compressing the outer/inner divertor leg, respectively. Abstract

A novel, compact, quasi-axisymmetric configuration is presented which exhibits low fast-particle losses and is stable to ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. The design has fast-particle loss rates below 8% for flux surfaces within the half-radius, and is shown to have a MHD stability limit of a normalized pressure of , where is volume averaged. The flux surfaces at various plasma betas and currents as calculated using the SPEC equilibrium code (Loizu et al 2016 Phys. Plasmas23 112505) are presented. Neoclassical transport coefficients are shown to be similar to an equivalent tokamak, with a distinct banana regime at half-radius. Abstract

This study considers the self-consistent formation and dynamics of electron clouds interacting with a background neutral gas through elastic and inelastic (ionization) collisions in coaxial geometries similar to gyrotron electron guns. These clouds remain axially trapped as the result of crossed magnetic field lines and electric equipotential lines creating potential wells similar to those used in Penning traps. Contrary to standard Penning traps, in this study, we consider a strong externally applied radial electric field which is of the same order as that of the space-charge field. In particular, the combination of coaxial geometry, strong radial electric fields, and electron collisions with the residual neutral gas (RNG) present in the chamber induce non-negligible radial particle transport and ionization. In this paper, the dynamics of the cloud density and currents resulting from electron–neutral collisions are studied using a 2D3V particle-in-cell code. Simulation results and parametric scans are hereby presented. Finally, a fluid model is derived to explain and predict the cloud peak density and peak radial current depending on the externally applied electric and magnetic fields, and on the RNG pressure.

Abstract

Good magnetic surfaces, as opposed to magnetic islands and chaotic field lines, are generally desirable for stellarators. In previous work, M. Landreman et al. [Phys. of Plasmas 28, 092505 (2021)] showed that equilibria computed by the Stepped-Pressure Equilibrium Code (SPEC) [S. P. Hudson et al., Phys. Plasmas 19, 112502 (2012)] could be optimized for good magnetic surfaces in vacuum. In this paper, we build upon their work to show the first finite-$\beta$, fixed- and free-boundary optimization of SPEC equilibria for good magnetic surfaces. The objective function is constructed with the Greene's residue of selected rational surfaces and the optimization is driven by the SIMSOPT framework [M. Landreman et al., J. Open Source Software 6, 3525 (2021)]. We show that the size of magnetic islands and the consequent regions occupied by chaotic field lines can be minimized in a classical stellarator geometry by optimizing either the injected toroidal current profile, the shape of a perfectly conducting wall surrounding the plasma (fixed-boundary case), or the coils (free-boundary case), in a reasonable amount of computational time. Abstract

After completing the main construction phase of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and successfully commissioning the device, first plasma operation started at the end of 2015. Integral commissioning of plasma start-up and operation using electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and an extensive set of plasma diagnostics have been completed, allowing initial physics studies during the first operational campaign. Both in helium and hydrogen, plasma breakdown was easily achieved. Gaining experience with plasma vessel conditioning, discharge lengths could be extended gradually. Eventually, discharges lasted up to 6 s, reaching an injected energy of 4 MJ, which is twice the limit originally agreed for the limiter configuration employed during the first operational campaign. At power levels of 4 MW central electron densities reached 3 × 1019 m−3 , central electron temperatures reached values of 7 keV and ion temperatures reached just above 2 keV. Important physics studies during this first operational phase include a first assessment of power balance and energy confinement, ECRH power deposition experiments, 2nd harmonic O-mode ECRH using multi-pass absorption, and current drive experiments using electron cyclotron current drive. As in many plasma discharges the electron temperature exceeds the ion temperature significantly, these plasmas are governed by core electron root confinement showing a strong positive electric field in the plasma centre. Abstract

A refined two-point model is derived from the drift-reduced Braginskii equations for the limited tokamak scrape-off layer (SOL) by balancing the parallel and perpendicular transport of plasma and heat and taking into account the plasma–neutral interaction. The model estimates the electron temperature drop along a field line, from a region far from the limiter to the limiter plates. Self-consistent first-principles turbulence simulations of the SOL plasma including its interaction with neutral atoms are performed with the GBS code and compared to the refined two-point model. The refined two-point model is shown to be in very good agreement with the turbulence simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. Design and first tests of the trapped electrons experiment T-REX.

Abstract

Gyrotrons are essential for electron cyclotron resonance heating in fusion reactors, making efficient operation crucial for advancing fusion energy. Past experiments revealed instability issues due to trapped electrons in the magnetron injection gun (MIG) region, causing undesired currents and operational failures. To address this, tight manufacturing tolerances are required for the MIG geometry [Pagonakis et al., Phys. Plasmas 23, 023105 (2016)]. We present the initial findings of the trapped electrons experiment developed at the Swiss Plasma Center, designed to understand the physics of electron clouds in gyrotron MIGs. T-REX replicates MIG geometries, as well as their typical electric and magnetic fields, and it is supported by 2D particle-in-cell simulations with the FENNECS code [Le Bars et al., Phys. Plasmas 29, 082105 (2022); Le Bars, Ph.D. thesis, EPFL, Lausanne, 2023]. The setup includes two coaxial electrodes in a vacuum chamber atop a superconducting magnet, with a central electrode biased to negative DC voltages and an outer one at the ground, creating a radial electric field (1-2 MV/m) and an axial magnetic field (B < 0.4 T). This setup mimics Penning-Malmberg traps. We present the experimental device and first findings on current distribution and also a qualitative comparison with FENNECS simulations [Le Bars et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 303, 109268 (2024)]. Planned diagnostics include optical emission spectroscopy, phosphor screen imaging, streak camera imaging, and potentially electric field distribution via the Stark effect. 23. Convective cells and blob control in a simple magnetized plasma.

Abstract

Blob control by creating convective cells using biased electrodes is demonstrated in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas. A two-dimensional array of electrodes is installed on a metal limiter to obtain different biasing schemes. Detailed two-dimensional measurements across the magnetic field reveal the formation of a convective cell, which shows a high degree of uniformity along the magnetic field. Depending on the biasing scheme, radial and vertical blob velocities can be varied significantly. A high level of cross-field currents limits the achievable potential variations to values well below the applied bias voltage. Furthermore, the strongest potential variations are not induced along the biased flux tube, but at a position shifted in the direction of plasma flows.

24. Existence of subsonic plasma sheaths.

Abstract

The location of the plasma sheath edge, where quasineutrality is broken, is rigorously derived by using a kinetic description of the plasma. It is shown that sheaths can exist with arbitrarily small ion velocity at the sheath edge, thus violating the Bohm criterion, V(i)=c(s) at the sheath edge. Bohm's criterion is recovered in the case of large enough ion current through the wall, and it is found to be a reasonable approximation in floating potential conditions. However, in the case of a predominant electron current through the wall, Bohm's criterion is not able to describe the sheath-edge transition. The analytical results are supported by numerical simulations performed with a fully kinetic particle-in-cell code modeling a source-driven, weakly collisional plasma, bound between two absorbing walls.

Abstract

We present a quantitative model for the phototransduction cascade in Drosophila photoreceptors. The process consists of four stages: (1) light absorption by Rhodopsin, (2) signal amplification phase mediated by a G-protein coupled cascade, (3) closed/open state kinetics of the transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels which regulate the ionic current in/out of the cell and (4) Ca regulated positive and negative feedbacks. The model successfully reproduces the experimental results for: single photon absorption "quantum bump" (QB), statistical features for QB (average shape, peak current average value and variance, the latency distribution, etc.), arrestin mutant behaviour, low extracellular Ca(2+) cases, etc. The TRP channel activity is modeled by a Monod-Wyman-Changeux (MWC) model for allosteric interaction, instead of using the usual ad hoc Hill equation. This approach allows for a plausible physical explanation of how Ca/calmodulin regulate the protein activity. The cooperative nature of the TRP channel activation leads to "dark current" suppression at the output allowing for reliable detection of a single photon. Stochastic simulations were produced by using the standard rate equations combined with the Poisson distribution for generating random events from the forward and reverse reaction rates. Noise is inherent to the system but appears to be crucial for producing such reliable responses in this complex, highly non-linear system. The approach presented here may serve as a useful example how to treat complex cellular mechanisms underlying sensory processes.
