Abstract

Abstract The future Ricochet experiment aims at searching for new physics in the electroweak sector by providing a high precision measurement of the Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CENNS) process down to the sub-100 eV nuclear recoil energy range. The experiment will deploy a kg-scale low-energy-threshold detector array combining Ge and Zn target crystals 8.8 m away from the 58 MW research nuclear reactor core of the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France. Currently, the Ricochet Collaboration is characterizing the backgrounds at its future experimental site in order to optimize the experiment’s shielding design. The most threatening background component, which cannot be actively rejected by particle identification, consists of keV-scale neutron-induced nuclear recoils. These initial fast neutrons are generated by the reactor core and surrounding experiments (reactogenics), and by the cosmic rays producing primary neutrons and muon-induced neutrons in the surrounding materials. In this paper, we present the Ricochet neutron background characterization using $$^3$$ 3 He proportional counters which exhibit a high sensitivity to thermal, epithermal and fast neutrons. We compare these measurements to the Ricochet Geant4 simulations to validate our reactogenic and cosmogenic neutron background estimations. Eventually, we present our estimated neutron background for the future Ricochet experiment and the resulting CENNS detection significance. Our results show that depending on the effectiveness of the muon veto, we expect a total nuclear recoil background rate between 44 ± 3 and 9 ± 2 events/day/kg in the CENNS region of interest, i.e. between 50 eV and 1 keV. We therefore found that the Ricochet experiment should reach a statistical significance of 4.6 to 13.6 $$\sigma $$ σ for the detection of CENNS after one reactor cycle, when only the limiting neutron background is considered.

Abstract

Anomalies in past neutrino measurements have led to the discovery that these particles have non-zero mass and oscillate between their three flavors when they propagate. In the 2010's, similar anomalies observed in the antineutrino spectra emitted by nuclear reactors have triggered the hypothesis of the existence of a supplementary neutrino state that would be sterile i.e. not interacting via the weak interaction. The STEREO experiment was designed to study this scientific case that would potentially extend the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Here we present a complete study based on our full set of data with significantly improved sensitivity. Installed at the ILL (Institut Laue Langevin) research reactor, STEREO has accurately measured the antineutrino energy spectrum associated to the fission of 235U. This measurement confirms the anomalies whereas, thanks to the segmentation of the STEREO detector and its very short mean distance to the core (10~m), the same data reject the hypothesis of a light sterile neutrino. Such a direct measurement of the antineutrino energy spectrum suggests instead that biases in the nuclear experimental data used for the predictions are at the origin of the anomalies. Our result supports the neutrino content of the Standard Model and establishes a new reference for the 235U antineutrino energy spectrum. We anticipate that this result will allow to progress towards finer tests of the fundamental properties of neutrinos but also to benchmark models and nuclear data of interest for reactor physics and for observations of astrophysical or geo-neutrinos., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. The provided data is furthermore publicly available on the workshop’s data repository together with a plotting tool for visualization.

Abstract

The precise modeling of the de-excitation of Gd isotopes is of great interest for experimental studies of neutrinos using Gd-loaded organic liquid scintillators. The FIFRELIN code was recently used within the purposes of the STEREO experiment for the modeling of the Gd de-excitation after neutron capture in order to achieve a good control of the detection efficiency. In this work, we report on the recent additions in the FIFRELIN de-excitation model with the purpose of enhancing further the de-excitation description. Experimental transition intensities from EGAF database are now included in the FIFRELIN cascades, in order to improve the description of the higher energy part of the spectrum. Furthermore, the angular correlations between {\gamma} rays are now implemented in FIFRELIN, to account for the relative anisotropies between them. In addition, conversion electrons are now treated more precisely in the whole spectrum range, while the subsequent emission of X rays is also accounted for. The impact of the aforementioned improvements in FIFRELIN is tested by simulating neutron captures in various positions inside the STEREO detector. A repository of up-to-date FIFRELIN simulations of the Gd isotopes is made available for the community, with the possibility of expanding for other isotopes which can be suitable for different applications., Comment: Corrected typos on author names on arXiv metadata

Abstract

MURMUR is a new passing-through-walls neutron experiment designed to constrain neutron/hidden neutron transitions allowed in the context of braneworld scenarios or mirror matter models. A nuclear reactor can act as a hidden neutron source, such that neutrons travel through a hidden world or sector. Hidden neutrons can propagate out of the nuclear core and far beyond the biological shielding. However, hidden neutrons can weakly interact with usual matter, making possible for their detection in the context of low-noise measurements. In the present work, the novelty rests on a better background discrimination and the use of a mass of a material - here lead - able to enhance regeneration of hidden neutrons into visible ones to improve detection. The input of this new setup is studied using both modelizations and experiments, thanks to tests currently performed with the experiment at the BR2 research nuclear reactor (SCK$\cdot$CEN, Mol, Belgium). A new limit on the neutron swapping probability p has been derived thanks to the measurements taken during the BR2 Cycle 02/2019A: $p < 4.0 \ \times 10^{-10}$ at 95% CL. This constraint is better than the bound from the previous passing-through-wall neutron experiment made at ILL in 2015, despite BR2 is less efficient to generate hidden neutrons by a factor 7.4, thus raising the interest of such experiment using regenerating materials., 15 pages, 8 figures, final version, accepted for publication in European Physical Journal C

Abstract

International audience; {MURMUR is a new passing-through-walls neutron experiment installed near the BR2 nuclear reactor at the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK$\cdot$CEN, Mol, Belgium) and designed to search neutron interbrane transitions in the context of braneworld scenarios. In such scenarios, our visible Universe could be a 3-brane embedded in a multidimensional space-time, called the bulk, which could contain some other invisible adjacent 3-branes. Theoretical works have shown that the existence of hidden braneworlds can be experimentally tested thanks to neutron exchanges between braneworlds. A neutron $n$ in our visible brane can be converted into a hidden neutron $n'$ -- propagating in a hidden braneworld -- when scattered by a nucleus with a cross section $\sigma \big( n \rightarrow n'\big) \sim \sigma_E \big(n \rightarrow n \big) \times p$, where $\sigma_E$ is the usual elastic cross-section and $p$ the neutron swapping probability. Hidden neutrons could thus be generated in the moderator of the BR2 nuclear reactor where a high neutron flux undergoes many elastic scatterings. This hidden neutron flux could be free to travel out of the biological shielding of the reactor up to a matrix made of lead, acting as an antenna, which makes possible to regenerate hidden neutrons into visible ones thanks to reverse swapping. These regenerated neutrons can be detected thanks to a neutron detector placed inside the lead block. The MURMUR experimental setup is described, as well as the included upgrades compared to the first experiment of this kind carried out at the ILL (Grenoble, France) in 2015. The first results of MURMUR are introduced and discussed, and some upcoming improvements of the experimental setup are introduced.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the antineutrino rate from the fission of U235 with the STEREO detector using 119 days of reactor turned on. In our analysis, we perform several detailed corrections and achieve the most precise single measurement at reactors with highly enriched U235 fuel. We measure an IBD cross section per fission of σf=(6.34±0.06[stat]±0.15[sys]±0.15[model])×10-43 cm2/fission and observe a rate deficit of (5.2±0.8[stat]±2.3[sys]±2.3[model])% compared to the model, consistent with the deficit of the world average. Testing U235 as the sole source of the deficit, we find a tension between the results of lowly and highly enriched U235 fuel of 2.1 standard deviations.

Abstract

The STEREO experiment measures the electron antineutrino spectrum emitted in a research reactor using the inverse beta decay reaction on H nuclei in a gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator. The detection is based on a signal coincidence of a prompt positron and a delayed neutron capture event. The simulated response of the neutron capture on gadolinium is crucial for the comparison with data, in particular in the case of the detection efficiency. Among all stable isotopes, $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd have the highest cross sections for thermal neutron capture. The excited nuclei after the neutron capture emit gamma rays with a total energy of about 8 MeV. The complex level schemes of $^{156}$Gd and $^{158}$Gd are a challenge for the modeling and prediction of the deexcitation spectrum, especially for compact detectors where gamma rays can escape the active volume. With a new description of the Gd(n,${\gamma}$) cascades obtained using the FIFRELIN code, the agreement between simulation and measurements with a neutron calibration source was significantly improved in the STEREO experiment. Abstract

International audience; The reactor antineutrino anomaly might be explained by the oscillation of reactor antineutrinos toward a sterile neutrino of eV mass. In order to explore this hypothesis, the STEREO experiment measures the antineutrino energy spectrum in six different detector cells covering baselines between 9 and 11 m from the compact core of the ILL research reactor. In this Letter, results from 66 days of reactor turned on and 138 days of reactor turned off are reported. A novel method to extract the antineutrino rates has been developed based on the distribution of the pulse shape discrimination parameter. The test of a new oscillation toward a sterile neutrino is performed by comparing ratios of cells, independent of absolute normalization and of the prediction of the reactor spectrum. The results are found to be compatible with the null oscillation hypothesis and the best fit of the reactor antineutrino anomaly is excluded at 97.5% C.L.

Abstract

In order to measure the energy of neutron fields, with energy ranging from 8 keV to 1 MeV, a new primary standard is being developed at the IRSN (Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety). This project, -TPC (Micro Time Projection Chamber), carried out in collaboration with the LPSC (Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie), is based on the nuclear recoil detector principle. The instrument is presented with the associated method to measure the neutron energy. This article emphasizes the proton energy calibration procedure and energy measurements of a neutron field produced at 127 keV with the IRSN facility AMANDE.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare a cochlear implant electrode array loaded with dexamethasone (DXM) with a conventional passive electrode array for the preservation of residual hearing in gerbils.Thirty Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were implanted with an eluting electrode loaded with DXM (1 and 10%) on one side and a conventional passive electrode on the other side. Hearing thresholds were determined by tone bursts auditory brainstem responses at 4-6 weeks post-implantation and 1-year post-implantation for older gerbils.After 4-6 weeks post-implantation, residual hearing was statistically more preserved with electrode arrays loaded with DXM, regardless of concentration, for the frequencies 16 000 Hz (P = 0.0008), 4000 Hz (P = 0.0038), 1000 Hz (P = 0.0349), and 500 Hz (P = 0.0030). After 1 year, the difference in favor of the DXM+ electrode array was found statistically significant only for the frequency 16 000 Hz (P = 0.0103) but against it for the frequencies 1000 Hz (P = 0.0368) and 500 Hz (P = 0.0010).Electrode array with prolonged release of DXM improved short-term preservation of residual hearing after implantation for the frequencies 500, 1000, 4000, and 16 000 Hz in gerbils. The long-term results at 1 year confirmed these data for higher frequencies, but must be verified for the lower frequencies of 500 and 1000 Hz.

Abstract

The stereo experiment is searching for a non-standard oscillation in the propagation of anti-neutrinos produced by a nuclear reactor which could be the sign for the existence of a sterile state of eV mass and the origin of the reactor anti-neutrino anomaly. In this paper, results from 66 days of reactor turned on and 138 days of reactor turned off are reported excluding large amplitude oscillations. A special focus is put on the data analysis and studies of correlated backgrounds. In particular the origin of the correlated background measured in reactor turned off periods is discussed. This background mainly originates from neutrons produced by cosmic radiation.

Abstract

Purpose: Allograft anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction obviates donor site morbidity and may accelerate postoperative recovery. However, allograft use can lead to increased rates of surgical failure, particularly when chemical processing or irradiation is used. Few studies have rigorously evaluated the comparative outcomes of autografts and freshfrozen allograft tissue for ACL reconstruction. Methods: We performed a PubMed search to identify and systematically evaluate outcomes of autograft and nonechemically treated non-irradiated allograft tissue in ACL reconstruction between 1980 and 2012. We included studies with Level of evidence of I to III, determinate graft treatment, a minimum of 25 patients per treatment arm, a minimum 2-year follow-up, and selected subjective and objective outcome measures. Results: After the exclusion of 585 citations, we isolated 11 studies for further review. All patients showed improvement in clinical outcome measures and knee stability end points from injury to definitive surgical management. No statistically significant differences were detected between autografts and non-chemically processed non-irradiated allografts in Lysholm scores, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores, Lachman examinations, pivot-shift testing, KT-1000 measurements, or failure rates. Conclusions: Further large-scale, well-designed studies are required to better evaluate the comparative outcomes after fresh-frozen allograft ACL reconstruction. The current study suggests that the results after autograft ACL reconstruction are comparable to those using non-chemically processed nonirradiated allograft tissue. Abstract

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors. Abstract

The STEREO experiment will search for a sterile neutrino by measuring the anti-neutrino energy spectrum as a function of the distance from the source, the ILL nuclear reactor. A dedicated electronic system, hosted in a single microTCA crate, was designed for this experiment. It performs triggering in two stages with various selectable conditions, processing and readout via UDP/IPBUS of 68 photomultiplier signals continuously digitized at 250 MSPS. Additionally, for detector performance monitoring, the electronics allow on-line calibration by driving LED synchronously with the data acquisition. Abstract

We present new experimental constraints on the elastic, spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross section using recent data from the XENON100 experiment, operated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 224.6 live days x 34 kg of exposure acquired during 2011 and 2012 revealed no excess signal due to axial-vector WIMP interactions with 129-Xe and 131-Xe nuclei. This leads to the most stringent upper limits on WIMP-neutron cross sections for WIMP masses above 6 GeV, with a minimum cross section of 3.5 x 10^{-40} cm^2 at a WIMP mass of 45 GeV, at 90% confidence level., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; corrected caption of figure 3

Abstract

Taking advantage of recent technical progress which has overcome some of the difficulties encountered in the 1960's in the radio detection of extensive air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR), a new experimental apparatus (CODALEMA) has been built and operated. We will present the characteristics of this device and the analysis techniques that have been developed for observing electrical transients associated with cosmic rays. We find a collection of events for which both time and arrival direction coincidences between particle and radio signals are observed. The counting rate corresponds to shower energies $\geq 5\times 10^{16}$ eV. The performance level which has been reached considerably enlarges the perspectives for studying UHECR events using radio detection., merge of astro-ph/0504240 and astro-ph/0504297 into one paper

Abstract

The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, was designed to search for evidence of dark matter interactions inside a volume of liquid xenon using a dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the Slow Control System (SCS) of the experiment with emphasis on the distributed architecture as well as on its modular and expandable nature. The system software was designed according to the rules of Object-Oriented Programming and coded in Java, thus promoting code reusability and maximum flexibility during commissioning of the experiment. The SCS has been continuously monitoring the XENON100 detector since mid 2008, remotely recording hundreds of parameters on a few dozen instruments in real time, and setting emergency alarms for the most important variables., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present results from the direct search for dark matter with the XENON100 detector, installed underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN, Italy. XENON100 is a two-phase time projection chamber with a 62 kg liquid xenon target. Interaction vertex reconstruction in three dimensions with millimeter precision allows to select only the innermost 48 kg as ultra-low background fiducial target. In 100.9 live days of data, acquired between January and June 2010, no evidence for dark matter is found. Three candidate events were observed in a pre-defined signal region with an expected background of 1.8 +/- 0.6 events. This leads to the most stringent limit on dark matter interactions today, excluding spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-sections above 7.0x10^-45 cm^2 for a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c^2 at 90% confidence level., 5 pages, 5 figures; matches accepted version

Abstract

The XENON100 experiment has recently completed a dark matter run with 100.9 live-days of data, taken from January to June 2010. Events in a 48kg fiducial volume in the energy range between 8.4 and 44.6 keVnr have been analyzed. A total of three events have been found in the predefined signal region, compatible with the background prediction of (1.8 \pm 0.6) events. Based on this analysis we present limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section for inelastic dark matter. With the present data we are able to rule out the explanation for the observed DAMA/LIBRA modulation as being due to inelastic dark matter scattering off iodine at a 90% confidence level., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We have built a low background detector, a time projection chamber surrounded by an active anti-Compton, to measure the ν e e − elastic cross section down to the antineutrino energy of 900 keV. With our detector, running at 18 m from the core of a nuclear reactor in Bugey, we could detect reactor antineutrinos by measuring both the energy and the direction of the recoiling electrons. We report here on a first analysis of the data using an automatic scanning procedure. The results we obtain are 1.5σ higher than the ones predicted by the standard model.

Abstract

We report on the performance of a 1 m$^{3}$ TPC filled with CF$_{4}$ at 3 bar, immersed in liquid scintillator and viewed by photomultipliers. Particle detection, event identification and localization achieved by measuring both the current signal and the scintillation light are presented. Particular features of $\alpha$ particle detection are also discussed. Finally, the ${54}$Mn photopeak, reconstructed from the Compton scattering and recoil angle is shown.

Abstract

In order to measure the energy and fluence of neutron fields, in the energy range of 8 to 1 MeV, a new primary standard is being developed at the Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN). This project, Micro Time Projection Chamber (µ-TPC), carried out in collaboration with the Laboratoire de Physqique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC), is based on the nucleus recoil detector principle. The measurement strategy requires track reconstruction of recoiling nuclei down to a few kiloelectronvolts, which can be achieved using a micro-pattern gaseous detector. A gas mixture, mainly isobutane, is used as an n-p converter to detect neutrons within the detection volume. Then electrons, coming from the ionisation of the gas by the proton recoil, are collected by the pixelised anode (2D projection). A self-triggered electronics system is able to perform the anode readout at a 50-MHz frequency in order to give the third dimension of the track. Then, the scattering angle is deduced from this track using algorithms. The charge collection leads to the proton energy, taking into account the ionisation quenching factor. This article emphasises the neutron energy measurements of a monoenergetic neutron field produced at 127 keV. The fluence measurement is not shown in this article. The measurements are compared with Monte Carlo simulations using realistic neutron fields and simulations of the detector response. The discrepancy between experiments and simulations is 5 keV mainly due to the calibration uncertainties of 10 %.

Abstract

Three-dimensional track reconstruction is a key issue for directional Dark Matter detection. It requires a precise knowledge of the electron drift velocity. Magboltz simulations are known to give a good evaluation of this parameter. However, large TPC operated underground on long time scale may be characterized by an effective electron drift velocity that may differ from the value evaluated by simulation. In situ measurement of this key parameter is hence a way to avoid bias in the 3D track reconstruction. We present a dedicated method for the measurement of the electron drift velocity with the MIMAC detector. It is tested on two gas mixtures : $\rm CF_4$ and $\rm CF_4+CHF_3$. 30. Implantation cochléaire bilatérale : influence de l’asymétrie sur le bénéfice binaural

Abstract

But de la presentation Cette etude a pour but d’evaluer les scores d’intelligibilite vocale dans le silence et le bruit et de mettre en evidence un lien entre le benefice binaural avec deux implants cochleaires et l’asymetrie interaurale. Materiel et methodes Etude clinique monocentrique incluant vingt-quatre patients majeurs presentant une surdite profonde pre ou postlinguale implantes de maniere bilaterale. Des tests de sonie et d’intelligibilite vocale en condition monaurale et binaurale apres un minimum de 6 mois de port des deux implants ont ete realises. Ils ont ete effectues dans le silence et dans le bruit, avec des logatomes de Dodele et Mots dissyllabiques de Lafon. La voix etait emise a 65 dB a –30°, et le bruit de type Onde Vocale Globale emis a 0°. Le rapport signal sur bruit etait soit fixe, a +10 dB pour l’utilisation des logatomes, soit permettant une intelligibilite en bilateral de 70 % pour les mots dissyllabiques. Resultats Un benefice binaural d’intelligibilite de logatomes de 5 % [1 ;10] a ete mis en evidence dans le silence (73 % ± 15 en bilateral contre 68 % ± 12 du meilleur cote, p = 0,002) et de 6 %[–1 ;14] dans le bruit (69 % ± 16 en bilateral contre 62 % ± 19 du meilleur cote, p = 0,0036). Avec des mots dissyllabiques de Lafon, un benefice binaural de 10 % [5 ;20] a aussi ete mis en evidence (73 % ± 9 en bilateral contre 62 % ± 17 du meilleur cote, p = 0,009). Une correlation a ete demontree dans le bruit montrant que plus l’asymetrie entre les deux cotes est grande moins bon est le benefice binaural, aussi bien pour l’intelligibilite des logatomes (r = –0,416 ; p = 0,0431) que des mots (r = –0,47 ; p = 0,0313). Considerant l’intelligibilite des logatomes dans le bruit, les patients ont ete reparti en deux groupes : un groupe avec un « bon » benefice binaural (Intelligibilite avec implant bilateral ≥ 10 % par rapport au meilleur cote), n = 10, et un groupe avec un « faible » benefice binaural ( Conclusion Cette etude demontre le benefice binaural avec deux implants cochleaires dans le bruit avec comme materiel vocal des logatomes et des mots dissyllabiques, ainsi que l’influence positive de la symetrie interaurale sur le benefice binaural.

Abstract

About 20% of OPA1 mutation carriers have complicated forms of dominant optic atrophy associating extra-ocular features. Reviewing the files of 327 patients with an OPA1 mutation, we found 21 deaf patients (6.4%). In 10 patients deafness was detected under age 20, in 3 patients over age 20 and in 8 patients the age of onset was unknown. The severity of deafness ranged from mild and moderate. Audiological tests supported the diagnosis of auditory neuropathy in 8 cases. Seven different OPA1 mutations were identified in deaf patients. Three mutations, p.Arg445His, p.Gly401Asp and p.Leu243*, have been previously reported in patients with deafness. Two mutations, p.Val291_Phe328del and p.Ile463_Phe464dup, have been reported in patients with DOA without deafness. Finally, two novel OPA1 mutations, p.Arg437Glu and p.Ala357Leufs*4 were found. In the majority of patients with DOA and deafness, visual impairment occurred during the first decade while deafness appeared later. However, in 54% of patients deafness started prior to visual abnormalities. These observations suggest that audition should be carefully tested, including a specific search for auditory neuropahy in OPA1 mutation carriers.

Abstract

Directional detection of non-baryonic Dark Matter is a promising search strategy for discriminating WIMP events from neutrons, the ultimate background for dark matter direct detection. This strategy requires both a precise measurement of the energy down to a few keV and 3D reconstruction of tracks down to a few mm. The MIMAC (MIcro-tpc MAtrix of Chambers) collaboration has developed in the last years an original prototype detector based on the direct coupling of large pixelized micromegas with a special developed fast self-triggered electronics showing the feasibility of a new generation of directional detectors. The first bi-chamber prototype has been installed at Modane, underground laboratory in June 2012. The first undergournd background events, the gain stability and calibration are shown. Abstract

In order to measure energy of neutron fields, with energy ranging from 8 keV to 1 MeV, a new primary standard is being developed at the IRSN (Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety). This project, μ-TPC (Micro Time Projection Chamber), carried out in collaboration with the LPSC (Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie), is based on the nucleus recoil detector principle. The instrument will be presented with the associated method to measure the neutron energy. This article will emphasize the proton energy calibration procedure and energy measurements of a neutron field produced at 127 keV on the IRSN facility AMANDE. Finally the COMIMAC device, dedicated to the calibration, will be described. This original device, developed at the LPSC, is able to produce proton and electron beams with an accurate energy ranging from 1 keV to 50 keV.

Abstract

TheXENON100 experiment, installed underground at the LaboratoriNazionali del Gran Sasso, aims to directly detect dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic scattering off xenon nuclei. This paper presents a study on the nuclear recoil background of the experiment, taking into account neutron backgrounds from (alpha, n) reactions and spontaneous fission due to natural radioactivity in the detector and shield materials, as well as muon-induced neutrons. Based on MonteCarlo simulations and using measured radioactive contaminations of all detector components, we predict the nuclear recoil backgrounds for the WIMP search results published by theXENON100 experiment in 2011 and 2012, 0.11(-0.04)(+0.08) events and 0.17(-0.07)(+0.12) events, respectively, and conclude that they do not limit the sensitivity of the experiment., We gratefully acknowledge support from NSF, DOE, SNF, UZH, FCT, Region des Pays de la Loire, STCSM, NSFC, DFG, Stichting voor Fundamenteel Onderzoek der Materie (FOM), the Max Planck Society and the Weizmann Institute of Science. Abstract

The XENON100 dark matter experiment uses liquid xenon in a time projection chamber (TPC) to measure xenon nuclear recoils resulting from the scattering of dark matter Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). In this paper, we report the observation of single-electron charge signals which are not related to WIMP interactions. These signals, which show the excellent sensitivity of the detector to small charge signals, are explained as being due to the photoionization of impurities in the liquid xenon and of the metal components inside the TPC. They are used as a unique calibration source to characterize the detector. We explain how we can infer crucial parameters for the XENON100 experiment: the secondary-scintillation gain, the extraction yield from the liquid to the gas phase and the electron drift velocity., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

A new technique for medical imaging, "3{\gamma} imaging", is studied by our group at SUBATECH for few years. A small liquid xenon time projection chamber prototype has been built in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique. Abstract

Many experiments that aim at the direct detection of Dark Matter are able to distinguish a dominant background from the expected feeble signals, based on some measured discrimination parameter. We develop a statistical model for such experiments using the Profile Likelihood ratio as a test statistic in a frequentist approach. We take data from calibrations as control measurements for signal and background, and the method allows the inclusion of data from Monte Carlo simulations. Systematic detector uncertainties, such as uncertainties in the energy scale, as well as astrophysical uncertainties, are included in the model. The statistical model can be used to either set an exclusion limit or to make a discovery claim, and the results are derived with a proper treatment of statistical and systematic uncertainties. We apply the model to the first data release of the XENON100 experiment, which allows to extract additional information from the data, and place stronger limits on the spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section. Abstract

Articular cartilage lesions of the knee are recognized and treated frequently1. Despite evolving techniques, treatment of cartilage lesions in the knee remains a therapeutic challenge2. The nonoperative management of chondral injuries in young patients is often unsatisfactory for the patient and the surgeon3. Surgical options, such as microfracture, autogenous chondrocyte implantation, resurfacing techniques, and osteochondral allograft transplantation have been developed to treat cartilage defects; however, there is little Level-I or Level-II evidence to inform the decision-making process regarding the various surgical options2,3. Treating cartilage defects of the tibial plateau presents a unique challenge because the tibial plateau is partially obscured by the menisci and the distal part of the femur throughout all knee motion, with resultant difficulty in orthogonal access with instrumentation. Few reports exist on the treatment of tibial plateau chondral injuries with osteochondral grafting4,5. This case report presents a novel technique to treat a cartilage defect of the tibial plateau with use of a “drawer-exposure” osteotomy of the tibial plateau combined with fresh-frozen osteochondral allograft for treatment of an osteonecrotic lesion. The patient and her family were informed that data from this case would be submitted for publication, and they consented. The patient was a thirteen-year-old girl with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who had a history of chronic prednisone treatment in excess of 60 mg per day, but who at presentation had been managed with Enbrel (etanercept), methotrexate, and Mobic (meloxicam). The patient had multiple concomitant polyarthropathies, predominantly involving the knees and the ankles, and had undergone two previous arthroscopic debridements for osteonecrosis of the left talus. Abstract

Gaseous PhotoMultipliers (GPM) are a very promising alternative of vacuum PMTs especially for large-size noble-liquid detectors in the field of Functional Nuclear Medical Imaging and Direct Dark Matter Detection. We present recent characterization results of a Hybrid-GPM made of three Micropattern Gaseous Structures; a Thick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM), a Parallel Ionization Multiplier (PIM) and a MICROMesh GAseous Structure (MICROMEGAS),operating in Ne/CF4 (90:10). Gain values close to 10^7 were recorded in this mixture, with 5.9keV x-rays at 1100 mbar, both at room temperature and at that of liquid xenon (T = 171K). The results are discussed in term of scintillation detection. Abstract

The XENON100 experiment, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), aims to directly detect dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their elastic scattering off xenon nuclei. We present a comprehensive study of the predicted electronic recoil background coming from radioactive decays inside the detector and shield materials, and intrinsic contamination. Based on GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations using a detailed geometry together with the measured radioactivity of all detector components, we predict an electronic recoil background in the WIMP-search energy range (0-100 keV) in the 30 kg fiducial mass of less than 10e-2 events/(kg-day-keV), consistent with the experiment's design goal. The predicted background spectrum is in very good agreement with the data taken during the commissioning of the detector, in Fall 2009., 10 pages, 12 figures The updated version of the paper takes into account the new measurement of $^{136}$Xe 2$\nu$ $\beta\beta$ decay by EXO-200, with a half-life of (2.11$\pm0.04\pm$0.021)$\times10^{21}$ years

Abstract

Liquid xenon (LXe) is a very attractive material as a detection medium for ionization detectors due to its high density, high atomic number, and low energy required to produce electron-ion pairs. Therefore it has been used in several applications, like {\gamma} detection or direct detection of dark matter. Now Subatech is working on the R & D of LXe Compton telescope for 3{\gamma} medical imaging, which can make precise tridimensional localization of a ({\beta}+, {\gamma}) radioisotope emitter. The diffusion of charge carriers will directly affect the spatial resolution of LXe ionization signal. We will report how we measure the transverse diffusion coefficient for different electric field (0.5 ~ 1.2 kV/cm) by observing the spray of charge carriers on drift length varying until 12cm. Abstract

The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is designed to search for dark matter WIMPs scattering off 62 kg of liquid xenon in an ultra-low background dual-phase time projection chamber. In this letter, we present first dark matter results from the analysis of 11.17 live days of non-blind data, acquired in October and November 2009. In the selected fiducial target of 40 kg, and within the pre-defined signal region, we observe no events and hence exclude spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross-sections above 3.4 x 10^-44 cm^2 for 55 GeV/c^2 WIMPs at 90% confidence level. Below 20 GeV/c^2, this result constrains the interpretation of the CoGeNT and DAMA signals as being due to spin-independent, elastic, light mass WIMP interactions., 5 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

The new setup of the CODALEMA experiment installed at the Radio Observatory in Nancay, France, is described. It includes broadband active dipole antennas and an extended and upgraded particle detector array. The latter gives access to the air shower energy, allowing us to compute the efficiency of the radio array as a function of energy. We also observe a large asymmetry in counting rates between showers coming from the North and the South in spite of the symmetry of the detector. The observed asymmetry can be interpreted as a signature of the geomagnetic origin of the air shower radio emission. A simple linear dependence of the electric field with respect to vxB is used which reproduces the angular dependencies of the number of radio events and their electric polarity., Comment: 9 pages, 15 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The product of the cynT gene of the cyn operon in Escherichia coli has been identified as a carbonic anhydrase. The cyn operon also includes the gene cynS, encoding the enzyme cyanase. Cyanase catalyzes the reaction of cyanate with bicarbonate to give ammonia and carbon dioxide. The carbonic anhydrase was isolated from an Escherichia coli strain overexpressing the cynT gene and characterized. The purified enzyme was shown to contain 1 Zn2+/subunit (24 kDa) and was found to behave as an oligomer in solution; the presence of bicarbonate resulted in partial dissociation of the oligomeric enzyme. The kinetic properties of the enzyme are similar to those of carbonic anhydrases from other species, including inhibition by sulfonamides and cyanate. The amino acid sequence shows a high degree of identity with the sequences of two plant carbonic anhydrases. but not with animal and algal carbonic anhydrases. Since carbon dioxide formed in the bicarbonate-dependent decomposition of cyanate diffuses out of the cell faster than it would be hydrated to bicarbonate, the apparent function of the induced carbonic anhydrase is to catalyze hydration of carbon dioxide and thus prevent depletion of cellular bicarbonate.

Abstract

We discuss electric fields generated by cosmic-ray air showers at large impact parameters b. An approximation relevant to this situation is given. The formulation makes explicit the relationship between the shower profile and the radio pulse shapes at large b, putting forward one important observational consequence, namely the decrease of the high-frequency cutoff ν c ∝ 1 / b 2 when the impact parameter increases. The approximation is also used to give a detailed comparison between two emission models, the geosynchrotron model and the transverse current model.
