Abstract: Abstract The NEMO-3 results for the double- $$\beta $$ β decay of $$^{150}$$ 150 Nd to the 0 $$^+_1$$ 1 + and 2 $$^+_1$$ 1 + excited states of $$^{150}$$ 150 Sm are reported. The data recorded during 5.25 year with 36.6 g of the isotope $$^{150}$$ 150 Nd are used in the analysis. The signal of the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β transition to the 0 $$^+_1$$ 1 + excited state is detected with a statistical significance exceeding 5 $$\sigma $$ σ . The half-life is measured to be $$T_{1/2}^{2\nu \beta \beta }(0^+_1) = \left[ 1.11 ^{+0.19}_{-0.14} \,\left( \hbox {stat}\right) ^{+0.17}_{-0.15}\,\left( \hbox {syst}\right) \right] \times 10^{20}$$ T 1 / 2 2 ν β β ( 0 1 + ) = 1 . 11 - 0.14 + 0.19 stat - 0.15 + 0.17 syst × 10 20 year, which is the most precise value that has been measured to date. 90% confidence-level limits are set for the other decay modes. For the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay to the 2 $$^+_1$$ 1 + level the limit is $$T^{2\nu \beta \beta }_{1/2}(2^+_1) > 2.42 \times 10^{20}~\hbox {year}$$ T 1 / 2 2 ν β β ( 2 1 + ) > 2.42 × 10 20 year . The limits on the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay to the 0 $$^+_1$$ 1 + and 2 $$^+_1$$ 1 + levels of $$^{150}$$ 150 Sm are significantly improved to $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu \beta \beta }(0^+_1) > 1.36 \times 10^{22}~\hbox {year}$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν β β ( 0 1 + ) > 1.36 × 10 22 year and $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu \beta \beta }(2^+_1) > 1.26 \times 10^{22}~\hbox {year}$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν β β ( 2 1 + ) > 1.26 × 10 22 year .

Abstract: Abstract The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo to the ground state of $$^{100}$$ 100 Ru, $$T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left( \text{ stat }\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{18}$$ T1/2=6.81±0.01stat-0.40+0.38syst×1018 year. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $$5\times 10^5$$ 5×105 events and a signal-to-background ratio of $$\sim $$ ∼ 80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of $$\mathrm{n}=2,3,7$$ n=2,3,7 , as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained.

Abstract: Abstract Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ($$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2νββ ) half-life of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se as $$T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$$ T1/22ν=9.39±0.17stat±0.58syst×1019 y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $$\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$$ M2ν=0.0498±0.0016 . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0νββ ) using 0.93 kg of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$$ T1/20ν>2.5×1023y(90%C.L.) for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$$ ⟨mν⟩

4. Anoxic sediments off Central Peru record interannual to multidecadal changes of climate and upwelling ecosystem during the last two centuries

Abstract: High-resolution paleo-environmental and paleo-ecological archives in laminated sequences are present in selected areas from the upper continental Peruvian margin within the oxygen minimum zone. We present initial results of a multidisciplinary study (the PALEOPECES project) that aims to reconstruct environmental and ecosystem variability during the past 200 years from high-resolution records. We report chronology development, sediment structure, elemental, organic, and mineralogical compositions of a box core collected at 300 m depth off Pisco, central Peru. An average sedimentation rate of 2.2 mm y-1 was estimated from downcore excess 210Pb activities for the last 100-150 years. Extending this rate further downcore indicates that a slump located at 52 cm depth from the top of the core can be correlated with a large tsunami that struck the coast of central Peru in 1746. X-ray analyses reveal laminated structures composed of couplets of light and dark laminae. Observations under polarized microscope show that light laminae are dominated by more dense, detrital and terrigenous material, while dark laminae are less dense with greater concentrations of amorphous biogenic silica. Downcore variations in dry bulk density and X-ray radioscopy of gray level show similar patterns, including a major shift at 34 cm depth (ca. mid-nineteenth century). A finely laminated sequence, which may include annual varves, is present between 34 cm depth and the slump layer. Sediment characteristics of the sequence suggest increased seasonality of terrigenous versus biogenous sedimentation during the corresponding period. In addition to a mid-nineteenth century change and considerable multidecadal variability in TOC, there is a positive trend in the past 50 years. Mineralogical analyses from a Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) of the upper core covering the last 25 years, indicate higher concentrations of the mineral fraction (quartz, feldspar, kaolinite and illite) in layers including large El Niño events (1982-1983, 1986-1987 and 1997-1998), with the largest peak during the 1997-1998 episode. These results confirm that anoxic sediments off Pisco are suitable archives to investigate interannual and decadal changes in oceanographic conditions and climate of the northern Humboldt upwelling system.

Abstract: The SuperNEMO experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$), and study the Standard-Model double-beta decay process ($2\nu\beta\beta$). The SuperNEMO technology can measure the energy of each of the electrons produced in a double-beta ($\beta\beta$) decay, and can reconstruct the topology of their individual tracks. The study of the double-beta decay spectrum requires very accurate energy calibration to be carried out periodically. The SuperNEMO Demonstrator Module will be calibrated using 42 calibration sources, each consisting of a droplet of $^{207}$Bi within a frame assembly. The quality of these sources, which depends upon the entire $^{207}$Bi droplet being contained within the frame, is key for correctly calibrating SuperNEMO's energy response. In this paper, we present a novel method for precisely measuring the exact geometry of the deposition of $^{207}$Bi droplets within the frames, using Timepix pixel detectors. Abstract: The double-beta decay of 82Se to the 0 1 + excited state of 82Kr has been studied with the NEMO-3 detector using 0.93 kg of enriched 82Se measured for 4.75 y, corresponding to an exposure of 4.42 kg⋅y. A dedicated analysis to reconstruct the γ-rays has been performed to search for events in the 2e2γ channel. No evidence of a 2 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state has been observed and a limit of T 1 / 2 2 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 1.3 × 10 21 y at 90% CL has been set. Concerning the 0 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state, a limit for this decay has been obtained with T 1 / 2 0 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 2.3 × 10 22 y at 90% CL, independently from the 2 ν β β decay process. These results are obtained for the first time with a tracko-calo detector, reconstructing every particle in the final state.

Abstract: North Africa is the largest source of mineral dust on Earth, which has multiple impacts on the climate system; however, our understanding of decadal to centennial changes in African dust emissions over the last few millenniums is limited. Here, we present a high-resolution multiproxy analysis of sediment core from high-elevation Lake Bastani, on the island of Corsica, to reconstruct past African dust inputs to the western Mediterranean area over the last 3150 cal BP. Clay mineralogy with palygorskite and a clay ratio associated with geochemical data allow us to determine that terrigenous fluxes are almost exclusively related to atmospheric dust deposition from the western Sahara and Sahel areas over this period. High-resolution geochemical contents provide a reliable proxy for Saharan dust inputs with long-term (millennial) to short-term (centennial) variations. Millennial variations have been correlated with the long-term southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), with an increase in dust input since 1070 cal BP. This correlation suggests a strong link with the ITCZ and could reflect the increased availability of dust sources to be mobilized with an increase in wind and a decrease in precipitation over western and North Africa. For centennial to decadal variations, wavelet analyses show that since 1070 cal BP, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has been the main climatic forcing, with an increase in Saharan dust input during the positive phase, as suggested by previous studies over the last decades. However, when the ITCZ is in a northern position, before 1070 cal BP, wavelet analyses indicate that total solar irradiance (TSI) is the main forcing factor, with an increase in African dust input during low TSI. With climate reanalysis over the instrumental era, during low TSI we observe a significant negative anomaly in pressure over Africa, which is known to increase the dust transport. These two climatic forcing factors (NAO, TSI) modulate Saharan dust inputs to the Mediterranean area at a centennial timescale through changes in wind and transport pathways.

Abstract: The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $5\times10^5$ events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n=2,3,7, as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained., 11 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ( $2\nu \beta \beta $ ) half-life of$^{82}$ Se as $T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$ y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$ . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $0\nu \beta \beta $ ) using 0.93 kg of$^{82}$ Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$ , where the range reflects $0\nu \beta \beta $ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0\nu \beta \beta $ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

Abstract: We report the results of a first experimental search for lepton number violation by four units in the neutrinoless quadruple-β decay of Nd150 using a total exposure of 0.19 kg yr recorded with the NEMO-3 detector at the Modane Underground Laboratory. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range T1/2>(1.1–3.2)×1021 yr at the 90% C.L., depending on the model used for the kinematic distributions of the emitted electrons.

Abstract: The radioactivity levels in the air of the radionuclides released by the Fukushima accident were measured at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, in the South-East of France, during the period 25 March–18 April 2011. Air-filters from the ventilation system exposed for one or two days were measured using low-background gamma-ray spectrometry. In this paper we present the activity concentrations obtained for the radionuclides 131 I, 132 Te, 134 Cs, 137 Cs, 95 Nb, 95 Zr, 106 Ru, 140 Ba/La and 103 Ru. The activity concentration of 131 I was of the order of 100 μBq/m 3 , more than 100 times higher than the activities of other fission products. The highest activities of 131 I were measured as a first peak on 30 March and a second peak on 3–4 April. The activity concentrations of 134 Cs and 137 Cs varied from 5 to 30 μBq/m 3 . The highest activity concentration recorded for Cs corresponded to the same period as for 131 I, with a peak on 2–3 April. The results of the radioactivity concentration levels in grass and mushrooms exposed to the air in the Modane region were also measured. Activity concentrations of 131 I of about 100 mBq/m 2 were found in grass.

Abstract: The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory has investigated the double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. Using $5.25$ yr of data recorded with a $6.99\,{\rm g}$ sample of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$, approximately $150$ double-$\beta$ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than $3$. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2\nu}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $ < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

Abstract: During the GWADASEIS cruise (Lesser Antilles volcanic arc, February–March 2009) a very high resolution (VHR) seismic-reflection survey was performed in order to constrain Late Quaternary to Present faulting. The profiles we obtained evidence frequent "ponding" of reworked sediments in the deepest areas, similar to the deposition of Mediterranean "homogenites". These bodies are acoustically transparent (few ms t.w.t. thick) and are often deposited on the hanging walls of dominantly normal faults, at the base of scarps. Their thickness appears sufficient to compensate (i.e. bury) co-seismic scarps between successive earthquakes, resulting in a flat and horizontal sea floor through time. In a selected area (offshore Montserrat and Nevis islands), piston coring (4 to 7 m long) was dedicated to a sedimentological analysis of the most recent of these particular layers. It corresponds to non-stratified homogenous calcareous silty sand (reworked calcareous plankton and minor volcanoclastics). This layer can be up to 2 m thick, and overlies fine-grained hemipelagites. The upper centimeters of the latter represent the normal RedOx water/sediment interface. 210Pb and 137Cs activities lack in the massive sands, while a normal profile of unsupported 210Pb decrease is observed in the hemipelagite below, together with a 137Cs peak corresponding to the Atmospheric Nuclear Experiments (1962). The RedOx level was thus capped by a recent instantaneous major sedimentary event considered as post-1970 AD; candidate seismic events to explain this sedimentary deposits are either the 16 March 1985 earthquake or the 8 October 1974 one (Mw = 6.3 and Mw = 7.4, respectively). This leads to consider that the syntectonic sedimentation in this area is not continuous but results from accumulation of thick homogenites deposited after the earthquakes (as observed in the following weeks after Haiti January 2010 event, McHugh et al., 2011). The existence of such deposits suggests that, in the area of study, vertical throw likely results from cumulated effects of separated earthquakes rather than from aseismic creep. Examination of VHR profiles shows that all major co-seismic offsets are recorded in the fault growth sequence and that co-seismic offsets can be precisely estimated. By using a sedimentation rate deduced from 210Pb decrease curve (0.5 mm yr−1) and taking into account minor reworking events detected in cores, we show that the Redonda system may have been responsible for five >M6 events during the last 34 000 yr. The approach presented in this work differs from fault activity analyses using displaced sets of isochronous surfaces and postulating co-seismic offsets. Combining VHR seismic imagery and coring we can decipher co-seismic vs. slow continuous displacement, and thus actually estimate the amplitude and the time distribution of major co-seismic offsets.

Abstract: The NEMO-3 detector, which had been operating in the Modane Underground Laboratory from 2003 to 2010, was designed to search for neutrinoless double $\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. We report final results of a search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays with $6.914$ kg of $^{100}$Mo using the entire NEMO-3 data set with a detector live time of $4.96$ yr, which corresponds to an exposure of 34.3 kg$\cdot$yr. We perform a detailed study of the expected background in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal region and find no evidence of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays in the data. The level of observed background in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal region $[2.8-3.2]$ MeV is $0.44 \pm 0.13$ counts/yr/kg, and no events are observed in the interval $[3.2-10]$ MeV. We therefore derive a lower limit on the half-life of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays in $^{100}$Mo of $T_{1/2}(0\nu\beta\beta)> 1.1 \times 10^{24}$ yr at the $90\%$ Confidence Level, under the hypothesis of light Majorana neutrino exchange. Depending on the model used for calculating nuclear matrix elements, the limit for the effective Majorana neutrino mass lies in the range $\langle m_{\nu} \rangle < 0.33$--$0.62$ eV. We also report constraints on other lepton-number violating mechanisms for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays.

Abstract: After analysis of 5797 h of data from the detector NEMO3, new limits on neutrinoless double beta decay of Mo-100 (T_{1/2} > 3.1 10^{23} y, 90% CL) and Se-82 (T_{1/2} > 1.4 10^{23} y, 90% CL) have been obtained. The corresponding limits on the effective majorana neutrino mass are: m 1.4 10^{22} y (90% CL) for Mo-100 and T_{1/2}> 1.2 10^{22} y (90%CL) for Se-82. Corresponding bounds on the Majoron-neutrino coupling constant are g < (0.5-0.9) 10^{-4} and < (0.7-1.6) 10^{-4}. Two-neutrino 2b-decay half-lives have been measured with a high accuracy, T_{1/2} Mo-100 = [7.68 +- 0.02(stat) +- 0.54(syst) ] 10^{18} y and T_{1/2} Se-82 = [10.3 +- 0.3(stat) +- 0.7(syst) ] 10^{19} y.

Abstract: Neutron activated items from the vicinity of the place where the JCO criticality accident occurred have been used to determine the fluence of neutrons around the facility and in nearby residential areas. By using underground laboratories for measuring the activation products, it is possible to extend the study to also cover radionuclides with very low activities from long-lived radionuclides. The present study describes γ-ray spectrometry measurements undertaken in a range of underground laboratories for the purpose of measuring 60 Co more than 2 years after the criticality event. The measurements show that neutron fluence determined from 60 Co activity is in agreement with previous measurements using the short-lived radionuclides 51 Cr and 59 Fe. Limits on contamination of the samples with 60 Co are evaluated and shown to not greatly affect the utility of neutron fluence determinations using 60 Co activation.

Abstract: Depth profiles of the particle-reactive radionuclides JI0 Pb, n7 Cs and 7 Be were established in sediments of a tidal flat in the Westerschelde. Cores were collected at different seasons at selected sites with contrasting characteristics. Accumulation rates estimated from 137 Cs profiles are consistent between the five sites with values comprised between 1.1 at the marginal sites and 2.5 cm y' 1 for the central part. Although the very low level of excess 210 Pb limits the precision of this method, profiles of 210 Pb" with depth allow calculating a range of sedimentation rates equivalent to those derived from 137 Cs data. At the muddy site, the vertical distribution of radionuclides revealed the existence of an important accumulation layer of fine particles at a depth of around 10 cm at the muddy site, may be in relation with biological and physical processes. The vertical distribution of 7 Be in the top 6 cm exhibits wide variability on seasonal scale, with the highest inventories and bioturbation rates observed in summer. Abstract: We report the results of a search for the neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{100}$Mo, using the NEMO-3 detector to reconstruct the full topology of the final state events. With an exposure of 34.7 kg.y, no evidence for the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ signal has been found, yielding a limit for the light Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of $T_{1/2}(0\nu\beta\beta)>1.1 \times 10^{24}$ years (90% C.L.) once both statistical and systematic uncertainties are taken into account. Depending on the Nuclear Matrix Elements this corresponds to an upper limit on the Majorana effective neutrino mass of $ < 0.3-0.8$ eV (90% C.L.). Constraints on other lepton number violating mechanisms of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decays are also given. Searching for high-energy double electron events in all suitable sources of the detector, no event in the energy region [3.2-10] MeV is observed for an exposure of 47 kg.y.

Abstract: Double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the excited states of daughter nuclei has been studied using a 600 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 2588 g of 97.5% enriched metallic $^{100}$Mo, which was formerly inside the NEMO-3 detector and used for the NEMO-3 measurements of $^{100}$Mo. The half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the excited 0$^+_1$ state in $^{100}$Ru is measured to be $T_{1/2}=[7.5 \pm{0.6}(stat) \pm {0.6}(syst)]\cdot 10^{20}$ yr. For other $(0\nu + 2\nu)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$, 0$^+_2$, 2$^+_3$ and 0$^+_3$ levels in $^{100}$Ru, limits are obtained at the level of $\sim (0.25-1.1)\cdot 10^{22}$ yr., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0904.1924

Abstract: To be sensitive to an effective Majorana neutrino mass, 〈 m ν 〉, on the order of 0.1 eV, the NEMO 3 double beta (ββ(0ν)) decay experiment requires precise knowledge and control of the backgrounds. The effect of neutrons and γ-rays from the Frejus underground laboratory (LSM, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane) has been studied during 10 700 h of data collection. The data were taken with a NEMO 2 prototype detector using different shield configurations. Monte Carlo calculations with GEANT/MICAP code and a new library of γ-rays from neutron captures are presented. The implied consequences for the NEMO 3 detector which is under construction are discussed. The neutrinoless double beta decay background induced by neutrons and γ-rays within the LSM will be suppressed to the very suitable level of 0.1 event in a live time of five years given the appropriate shield and magnetic field.

Abstract: The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype for the NEMO-3 detector and to study different modes of double beta decay. Measurements with 100 Mo, 116 Cd, 82 Se and 96 Zr were carried out. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on double beta decays for new Majoron emission modes and limits on effective neutrino–Majoron coupling constants.

Abstract: In the double beta decay (ββ) experiment NEMO-2, the 214 Bi radioactivity has been measured as background for the ββ processes. The analysis of the 214 Bi contamination has been performed via the signature of 214 Po alpha decay. This method has been applied to data taken with enriched 100 Mo and 116 Cd sources. At the level of NEMO-2's sensitivity, in a 1.0 mole yr study of enriched material, the contamination of the sources can be measured in the range of 2.0 mBq kg −1 . The effects of deposited contamination by 222 Rn are also discussed and estimated at the level of 0.3 mBq per square meter of source foil. Backgrounds for neutrinoless double beta decay (ββ0v) are deduced from these measurements and the consequences for the higher sensitivity ββ experiment NEMO-3 are drawn.

This laboratory is primarily designed to analyze environmental samples that display low radioactivity levels using gamma-ray spectrometry. Two high-purity germanium detectors were placed under 85 m of rock (ca. 215 m water equivalent) in the tunnel of Ferrieres (Ariege, France). The background is thus reduced by a factor of 20 in comparison to above-ground laboratories. Both detectors are fully equipped so that the samples can be analyzed in an automatic mode without requiring permanent presence of a technician in the laboratory. Auto-samplers (twenty positions) and systems to fill liquid nitrogen automatically provide one month of autonomy to the spectrometers. The LAFARA facility allows us to develop new applications in the field of environmental sciences based on the use of natural radionuclides present at low levels in the environment. As an illustration, we present two of these applications: i) dating of marine sediments using the decay of Ra-226 in sedimentary barite (BaSO4), ii) determination of Ac-227 (Pa-231) activities in marine sediment cores. Abstract: The NEMO-2 tracking detector located in the Frejus Underground Laboratory was designed as a prototype of the detector NEMO-3 to study 0ν and 2ν double-beta decay (ββ) physics. After ten months of nearly continuous running with an enriched cadmium source (0.92 mol·y of116Cd) aββ2ν half-life ofT1/2=(3.75±0.35(stat)±0.21(syst))·1019 y was measured. Limits with 90% CL on the116Cd half-lives of 5.0·1021 y forββ0ν decay and of 1.2·1021 y forββ0νχ0 decay with a Majoron (χ0) were obtained. Theoretical predictions for 0ν and 2ν decays of116Cd are also presented.

Abstract: The two-neutrino mode of double beta decay of is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The calculations, using the quasiparticle random phase approximation approach, show that for the detection of transitions to the two first excited states in the daughter nuclide will be possible in the very near future. On the experimental side, new, most stringent limits on half-lives for the double beta decay of to excited states in have been obtained with a `well-type' germanium detector. They range between and years (90% CL).

30. 210Pb-226Ra chronology reveals rapid growth rate of Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa on world's largest cold-water coral reef

Abstract: Here we show the use of the 210Pb-226Ra excess method to determine the growth rate of corals from one of the world's largest known cold-water coral reef, the Røst Reef off Norway. Two large branching framework-forming cold-water coral specimens, one Lophelia pertusa and one Madrepora oculata were collected alive at 350 m water depth from the Røst Reef at ~67° N and ~9° E. Pb and Ra isotopes were measured along the major growth axis of both specimens using low level alpha and gamma spectrometry and the corals trace element compositions were studied using ICP-QMS. Due to the different chemical behaviors of Pb and Ra in the marine environment, 210Pb and 226Ra were not incorporated the same way into the aragonite skeleton of those two cold-water corals. Thus to assess of the growth rates of both specimens we have here taken in consideration the exponential decrease of initially incorporated 210Pb as well as the ingrowth of 210Pb from the decay of 226Ra. Moreover a~post-depositional 210Pb incorporation is found in relation to the Mn-Fe coatings that could not be entirely removed from the oldest parts of the skeletons. The 226Ra activities in both corals were fairly constant, then assuming constant uptake of 210Pb through time the 210Pb-226Ra chronology can be applied to calculate linear growth rate. The 45.5 cm long branch of M. oculata reveals an age of 31 yr and a~linear growth rate of 14.4 ± 1.1 mm yr−1, i.e. 2.6 polyps per year. However, a correction regarding a remaining post-depositional Mn-Fe oxide coating is needed for the base of the specimen. The corrected age tend to confirm the radiocarbon derived basal age of 40 yr (using 14C bomb peak) with a mean growth rate of 2 polyps yr−1. This rate is similar to the one obtained in Aquaria experiments under optimal growth conditions. For the 80 cm-long specimen of L. pertusa a remaining contamination of metal-oxides is observed for the middle and basal part of the coral skeleton, inhibiting similar accurate age and growth rate estimates. However, the youngest branch was free of Mn enrichment and this 15 cm section reveals a growth rate of 8 mm yr−1 (~1 polyp every two to three years). However, the 210Pb growth rate estimate is within the lowermost ranges of previous growth rate estimates and may thus reflect that the coral was not developing at optimal growth conditions. Overall, 210Pb-226Ra dating can be successfully applied to determine the age and growth rate of framework-forming cold-water corals, however, removal of post-depositional Mn-Fe oxide deposits is a prerequisite. If successful, large branching M. oculata and L. pertusa coral skeletons provide unique oceanographic archive for studies of intermediate water environmentals with an up to annual time resolution and spanning over many decades.

Abstract: This Letter reports results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661g of 130Te in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. With this data set the double beta decay rate of 130Te is found to be non-zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T1/2 = (7.0 +/- 0.9(stat) +/- 1.1(syst)) x 10^{20} yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half-life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay.

Abstract: A new ultra-low background planar germanium spectrometer has been developed. The planar geometry improves the sensitivity and energy resolution below 600 keV. The integral background counting rate in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (4800 m water equivalent) in the energy range from 20 to 1500 keV for the planar Ge (mass=800 g) is 140 count/day. After 40 days of statistics, the background counting rates for all expected single lines are below 0.5 count/day with the exception of 210Pb(46-keV line) which was measured to be (1.76±0.25) count/day. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to explain the origin of the remaining background and to calculate the detection efficiencies. Sensitivities around 1 mBq/kg are obtained within few days of statistics for 226Ra and 228Th. The main achievement is the high sensitivities for 210Pb (46-keV line) and 238U (234Th: 63 and 93 keV lines). For an aluminium sample (mass=1 kg) the limits obtained in 15 days are 210 Pb 9 mBq / kg and 238 U 3 mBq / kg .

Freydier, R. 2 ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV AMSTERDAM MAR CHEM; We report vertical profiles of radium-226 (Ra-226) concentrations determined in seawater and suspended particles collected in the North-West Pacific using Multi Collector-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Dissolved Ra-226 concentrations were determined in small size water samples (between 110 and 250 ml volume) with a precision usually better than 5% (internal error, two standard error, 2 sigma(m)) using a chemical protocol slightly modified compared to previous studies that provides a chemical recovery of 90%. The Ra-226 activities thus obtained are in good agreement with the Ra-226 activities determined using low-background gamma spectrometry. In this work, we report the first Ra-226 activities determined in marine suspended particles using MC-ICP-MS. We thus show that this method is very useful to determine Ra-226 concentrations in suspended particles that have been poorly studied up to now because they display very low Ra-226 activities (i.e. two orders of magnitude lower than the Ra-226 activity in seawater). Such a sensitive method can thus be used to build high-resolution vertical profiles of dissolved and particulate Ra-226 activities, which would allow us to better understand the impact of biology on the oceanic Ra cycle. While Ra-228 and Ra-228 are usually measured using gamma spectrometry, short-lived Ra isotopes (Ra-224 and Ra-223) are usually measured using a Radium Delayed Coincidence Counter (RaDeCC). Here we show that the four radium isotopes can be Ra-228 Ra-224 223 analyzed using gamma spectrometry. We report Ra-226 Ra activities measured using low-background gamma spectrometry in standard samples, in water samples collected in the vicinity of our laboratory (La Palme and Vaccares lagoons, France) but also in seawater samples collected in the plume of the Amazon river, off French Guyana (AMANDES project). The Ra-223 and Ra-224 activities determined in these samples using gamma spectrometry were compared to the activities determined using RaDeCC. Activities determined using the two techniques are in good agreement. Uncertainties associated with the Ra-224 activities are similar for the two techniques. RaDeCC is more sensitive for the detection of low Ra-223 activities. Gamma spectrometry thus constitutes an alternate method for the determination of short-lived Ra isotopes. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: The half-life for double-{beta} decay of {sup 150}Nd has been measured by the NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory. Using 924.7 days of data recorded with 36.55 g of {sup 150}Nd, we measured the half-life for 2{nu}{beta}{beta} decay to be T{sub 1/2}{sup 2{nu}}=(9.11{sub -0.22}{sup +0.25}(stat.){+-}0.63(syst.))x10{sup 18} yr. The observed limit on the half-life for neutrinoless double-{beta} decay is found to be T{sub 1/2}{sup 0{nu}}>1.8x10{sup 22} yr at 90% confidence level. This translates into a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of

Abstract: In the double beta decay experiment NEMO 3 a precise knowledge of the background in the signal region is of outstanding importance. This article presents the methods used in NEMO 3 to evaluate the backgrounds resulting from most if not all possible origins. Abstract: Using 9.4 g of Zr-96 and 1221 days of data from the NEMO-3 detector corresponding to 0.031 kg yr, the obtained 2vbb decay half-life measurement is [2.35 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)] x 10^19 yr. Different characteristics of the final state electrons have been studied, such as the energy sum, individual electron energy, and angular distribution. The 2v nuclear matrix element is extracted using the measured 2vbb half-life and is 0.049 +/- 0.002. Constraints on 0vbb decay have also been set., Published in Nucl.Phys.A (10 pages, 10 figures)

Abstract: International audience; The oxygen isotopic ratio of diatom silica from a box core collected on the eastern slope of the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California) has been analyzed. This core covers the last 90 years. The isotopic record indicates a progressive and continuous temperature increase of about 8°C from the end of the last century until 1980 with superimposed, rapid temperature fluctuations of 2 to 4°C. Although the Gulf of California is not directly under the influence of El Niño, short temperature increases may be associated with the El Niño events described by Quinn et al. (1987). The longer term changes are attributed to a decrease of upwelling intensity linked to weakening of the trade winds in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract: We measured 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex and 226 Ra ex /Ba ex ratios in suspended and sinking particles collected at the Oceanic Flux Program (OFP) time-series site in the western Sargasso Sea and compared them to seawater ratios to provide information on the origin and transport of barite (BaSO 4 ) in the water column. The 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex ratios of the suspended particles down to 2000 m are nearly identical to those of seawater at the same water depth. These ratios are much lower than expected if suspended barite was produced in surface waters and indicate that barite is produced throughout the mesopelagic layer. The 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex activity ratios of sinking particles collected at 1500 and 3200 m varied mostly between 0.1 and 0.2, which is intermediate between the seawater ratio at these depths ( ex = Ba total − Ba lithogenic ), considered to be mainly barite, present in the sinking flux is a mixture of crystals formed recently in the upper water column, formed several years earlier in the upper water column, or formed recently in deeper waters. We observe a sizeable temporal variability in the 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex ratios of sinking particles, which indicates temporal variability in the relative proportion of barite crystals originating from surface (with a high 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex ratio) and mesopelagic (with a low 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex ratio) sources. However, we could not discern a clear pattern that would elucidate the factors that control this variability. The 226 Ra/Ba ratios measured in seawater are consistent with the value reported from the GEOSECS expeditions (2.3 dpm μmol −1 ) below 500 m depth, but are significantly lower in the upper 500 m. High 226 Ra ex /Ba ex ratios and elevated Sr concentrations in suspended particles from the upper water column suggest preferential uptake of 226 Ra over Ba during formation of SrSO 4 skeletons by acantharians, which must contribute to barite formation in shallow waters. Deeper in the water column the 226 Ra ex /Ba ex ratios of suspended particles are lower than those of seawater. Since 228 Ra ex / 226 Ra ex ratios demonstrate that suspended barite at these depths has been produced recently and in situ, their low 226 Ra ex /Ba ex ratios indicate preferential uptake of Ba over Ra in barite formed in mesopelagic water.

Abstract: The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 0^+_1 and 2^+_1 excited states of 100Ru is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 0^+_1 state is measured to be T^(2nu)_1/2 = [5.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}(stat)+/-0.8(syst)]x 10^20 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy and angular distributions of emitted electrons is also obtained. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay to the excited 0^+_1 state has been found. The corresponding half-life limit is T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 0^+_1) > 8.9 x 10^22 y (at 90% C.L.). The search for the double beta decay to the 2^+_1 excited state has allowed the determination of limits on the half-life for the two neutrino mode T^(2nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.1 x 10^21 y (at 90% C.L.) and for the neutrinoless mode T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.6 x 10^23 y (at 90% C.L.)., 23 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Nucl. Abstract: The NEMO-3 tracking detector is located in the Fr��jus Underground Laboratory. It was designed to study double beta decay in a number of different isotopes. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on the double beta decay process for the isotopes $^{100}$Mo and $^{82}$Se for different Majoron emission modes and limits on the effective neutrino-Majoron coupling constants. In particular, new limits on "ordinary" Majoron (spectral index 1) decay of $^{100}$Mo ($T_{1/2} > 2.7\cdot10^{22}$ y) and $^{82}$Se ($T_{1/2} > 1.5\cdot10^{22}$ y) have been obtained. Abstract: The NEMO 3 detector, which has been operating in the Frejus underground laboratory since February 2003, is devoted to the search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bb0nu). Half-lives of the two neutrino double beta decays (bb2nu) have been measured for 100Mo and 82Se. After 389 effective days of data collection from February 2003 until September 2004 (Phase I), no evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay was found from ~7kg of 100Mo and ~1 kg of 82Se. The corresponding lower limits for the half-lives are 4.6 x 10^23 years for 100Mo and 1.0 x10^23 years for 82Se (90% C.L.). Depending on the nuclear matrix elements calculation, limits for the effective Majorana neutrino mass are < 0.7-2.8 eV for 100Mo and < 1.7-4.9 eV for 82Se, Comment: 5 pages Submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract: The development of the NEMO3 detector, which is now running in the Frejus Underground Laboratory (L.S.M. Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane), was begun more than ten years ago. The NEMO3 detector uses a tracking-calorimeter technique in order to investigate double beta decay processes for several isotopes. Abstract: Analysis of 60 Co traces in the matrix steel has recently gained in importance. This paper deals with the low-level γ -ray spectrometry measurements that were part of a recent German survey aiming at determining the present levels of artificial radionuclides in commercial steel. Specific 60 Co activities in the order of 10 −5 Bq g −1 were measured. To show equivalence in these measurements, a comparison exercise of European underground laboratories has been carried out, additionally.

Abstract: Sedimentation rates were determined from the 226 Ra ( T 1/2 =1602 a) decay in barite in seven cores collected from the western, central and eastern equatorial Pacific. Timing of the last carbonate dissolution increase was investigated with this new chronometer. However, an unconformity in the 226 Ra-in-barite profiles was observed at some sites, which could be related to this carbonate dissolution event. We discuss different mechanisms that may have generated these unconformities, including (1) bioturbation, (2) possible bias in the estimate of the correction for supported 226 Ra activities, (3) changes in the 226 Ra/Ba ratio within surface waters and (4) processes that may have affected the 226 Ra/Ba ratio recorded in barite, either within the water column or at the sediment–water interface. Among the processes invoked, an increase in the sediment focusing during the Holocene constitutes the mechanism that can most likely explain the observed unconformities. An increase in the sediment redistribution by bottom currents would enhance the lateral transport of old resuspended barite crystals (with a low 226 Ra/Ba ratio). The 226 Ra/Ba ratio of barite that accumulates in the sediments, therefore, may have decreased, leading to the unconventional 226 Ra-profile shape observed in several cores. A change in the chemistry of the bottom waters that transport the resuspended sediment may have also affected the sediment carbonate contents.

Abstract: For the U-Th series radionuclides investigation in natural freshwater, a simple, fast, and not laboratory intensive method which consists of evaporating the water samples to dryness in the presence of carriers is presented. The small volume of the residue (1-2 cm3) leads to a good efficiency for gamma counting and limits the self-absorption effect for the low energy gamma rays (less than 200 keV). The best efficiency is obtained with a well-type Ge detector. To determine the evaporation yields a river with a common uranium content, the Seine river (France), was selected. By using internal spikes and more conventional techniques of investigation, we demonstrate that the evaporation is quantitative for U, Th, Ra, Pb, and Be. The residue of a 3 L, standard superficial freshwater, evaporated sample was analyzed in a high efficiency, low background Ge detector, which leads to a sufficient precision for most environmental studies. The method has been applied to rain, river, and lake waters to study the impact of disused uranium mine water inputs on the 238U, 228-234Th, 226-228Ra, 210Pb, and 7Be river and lake contents in the U mining area of Limoges (France).

Abstract: EDF has initiated a program assessing the fate of radionuclides released by nuclear power plants located along the river basin. In order to estimate the behaviour of radionuclides associated with suspended sediment in the Loire estuary, a multivariate transport model has been developed. Several dissolved and particulate constituents can be simultaneously computed, the later being followed in the superficial sediment according to the deposition events. Modelling of salinity and suspended matter was included as having an influence on sorption kinetics, and on radionuclide transport. Indeed, the association of radionuclides with particle can affect their residence time in sedimentation zones of water systems. Partitioning of radionuclides between water and suspended matter is usually expressed as Kd, concentration ratio between particulate and dissolved phases. In the simulations presented, particulate and dissolved 60 Co behaviour were considered to interact with suspended solids and salinity trough sorption and desorption kinetics, distribution coefficients being considered as representing equilibrium conditions seldom reached in nature. Simulation was carried out for two river discharges (high river input and low river input). The computed results are compared with observed values for surface levels, salinity and suspended matter as well as 60 Co concentrations.

Abstract: Seabed distributions of 234Th excess (Thxs) were determined in the upper centimetres of 38 sediment cores from the north-western Iberian Margin, sampled from 41–44°N and from 9–12°E during five OMEX II cruises. Three main areas, a northern, and at 42°38 and 42°N, were investigated during representative seasons (winter, spring and summer). Low 234Thxs activities in summer 1998 (18–252 Bq per kg) were similar to those measured in summer 1997. In winter 234Th also showed moderate excess. The highest values were observed in spring with surface 234Thxs values up to 402 Bq kg−1. Maximum penetration depths of 234Thxs ranged from a few mm to 3 cm. 234Thxs activities always showed a smooth decrease with depth, without any evidence of non-local mixing. Thus particle mixing on a short time scale can be described as an eddy diffusive process, and bioturbation rates, calculated on this basis, range from 0.02 to 3.07 cm2 per year. Data (activities, inventories, bioturbation rates) are discussed in order to relate the observed surface and down-core variations to spatial and seasonal trends. Using 234Thxs data in sediment as a substitute for sediment trap estimates, particle fluxes were calculated from 234Thxs inventories. The range of 234Th-derived particle fluxes for the north-western Iberian Margin is 16–1418 mg.m−2.d−1. Mean values indicate a gradual decrease of mass fluxes from the shelf to the open ocean. On a 100-day scale, the northern area (43–44°N) represents a low sedimentation regime. Further south, around 42°–43°N, particle inputs are more important. On the middle slope, around 1000 to 2000 m depth, high inventories and bioturbation rates indicate enhanced, and probably organic-rich, particle fluxes to the seafloor, particularly in spring.
