This approach is useful to enhance our understanding of the relationship between form and function in fishes when a direct assessment is impossible. Inter-species variation was analysed using geometric morphometric analysis for fish body shape, while morphometry and wavelet functions for sagittae morphology. A clear ecomorphological pattern in the body, as well as otolith shape, is evident among species as deeper inhabiting species possess a deeper body with oblong otoliths compared with shallower species that possess a more streamlined body with fusiform otoliths. We also observed that deeper species (P. obscura) possess bigger eyes for the optimum use of available light and bigger otoliths with higher otolith sensory area and otolith area ratio (S:O) for better sound reception capacities. Our hypothesis supports that the differences in fish morphological as well as sensorial traits (otoliths), which are closely related to their locomotion, foraging pattern and depth of habitation, lead to trophic segregation which in turn encourages their coexistence. Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is an obligate myiasis-causing fly of livestock that is widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin. A total of 73 683 sheep from 122 flocks in Albacete Province (southeastern [SE] Spain) were examined to detect active traumatic myiasis. The influence of several individual and flock factors on the prevalence was also assessed. The overall flock prevalence of traumatic myiasis was 95.9%, with an individual prevalence of 7.1%. Wohlfahrtia magnifica was identified in all of the positive animals except one that was infested by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Adults of both genders showed a higher risk of infestation than juveniles, whereas males of all ages displayed an increased risk of infestation than females of all ages; the existence of a lambing building on the farm, poor husbandry facilities and the location area were also identified as risk factors. Prevalence was highest in the summer, and the fly season lasted from March to November. Genitalia were the main location of infestation in males (94.4%) and females (76.3%). Our results reveal that traumatic myiasis by W. magnifica is widespread in southeastern Spain, hence preventive measures minimizing the attractiveness of sheep to gravid flies are necessary to avoid health and welfare problems and significant production losses in sheep flocks SI

INTRODUCTION Telemedicine applied to surgery is called telementorization (TM). It allows remote assistance by expert surgeons to others with less experience in certain techniques, thus guaranteeing learning that overcomes the barriers of time and location without being associated with a higher rate of complications. The objective is to publicize the use of this type of technology in our surgical department, particularly needed with the current restrictions. MATERIAL AND METHODS In our center, the Proximie platform (www.proximie.com) is used as a tool for TM. It allows to remotely broadcast live procedures performed by expert surgeons, as well as to create a virtual library of our own procedures that can be used as study and teaching tool by residents. This platform transmits not only bidirectional image and sound, but it also allows the active participation of a remote assistant with interactive features that are projected directly on the screen of the local surgeon. RESULTS The Proximie platform is being used frequently (and more intensively during this time of greatest restrictions) in advanced colorectal surgeries, with TM by remote experts and in our department for the continuing training program for residents. It also offers the possibility of conducting multidisciplinary sessions and webinars with subsequent availability control online. CONCLUSIONS TM and digital platforms such as Proximie provide important benefits in the practical learning and training of surgeons, especially with the current restrictions, being a safe technique and a teaching tool to be exploited.

In this study, we describe and analyse the morphology of the sagitta, the largest otolith, of 25 species of Gobiidae inhabiting the Adriatic and north-western Mediterranean seas. Our goal was to test the usefulness and efficiency of sagittal otoliths for species identification. Our analysis of otolith contours was based on mathematical descriptors called wavelets, which are related to multi-scale decompositions of contours. Two methods of classification were used: an iterative system based on 10 wavelets that searches the Anàlisi de Formes d'Otòlits (AFORO) database and a discriminant method based only on the fifth wavelet. With the exception of paedomorphic species, the results showed that otolith anatomy and morphometry can be used as diagnostic characters distinguishing the three Mediterranean phylogenetic goby lineages (Pomatoschistus or sand-goby lineage, Aphia lineage and Gobius lineage). The main anatomical differences were related to overall shape (square to rhomboid), the development and shape of the postero-dorsal and antero-ventral lobes and the degree of convexity of dorsal and ventral margins. Iterative classifications and discriminant analysis of otolith contour provided very similar results. In both cases, more than 70% of specimens were correctly classified to species and more than 80% to genus. Iterations in the larger AFORO database (including 216 families of teleosts) attained a 100% correct classification at the family level.

Resumen Introduccion y Objetivos La presencia de alteraciones del cordon umbilical es relativamente frecuente y las consecuencias de tal anomalia pueden ser variadas; por si solas explican casi un 30% de las situaciones de hipoxias fetales. El objetivo de nuestro estudio es analizar como influye la presencia de circulares, bandoleras o nudos vedaderos de cordon umbilical en los resultados acidobasicos de sangre de cordon en el parto. Material y metodos Se planteo un estudio retrospectivo, partiendo de los registros ya existentes del hospital Arquitecto Marcide de Ferrol, de casos y controles de los cuales incluimos 136 casos y 147 controles a los que se les habia determinado el pH arterial en sangre de cordon. Consideramos como resultados normales de pH los valores mayores o iguales a 7,20, como acidosis los comprendidos entre 7,10 y 7,19 y, finalmente, acidosis intensa los menores de 7,10 Resultados y conclusiones El valor de PH encontrado es de 7,24 para los casos y de 7,25 para los controles. No se han encontrado diferencias estadisticamente significativas en los varones de pH arterial decordon umbilical, con relacion al hecho de existir o no alteraciones en la disposicion funicular.

Two types of phase circulation are shown using two parallel lines of repulpers and thickeners. Each type holds two conventional flow lines for one phase. The second phase is circulated in one flow line, alternating the stages of the two conventional lines. An algorithm is presented for the simplified calculation of the operating concentrations in all the stages. A numerical application shows the possible advantages: broader range of operating concentration, larger efficiency of solute recovery, and higher number of theoretical equivalent stages. Each actual application needs the quantification of the above mentioned advantages in order to assess the economical interest of the proposed types.Se describen dos variantes de circulación de fases, cuando se utilizan dos líneas en paralelo de repulpadores y espesadores. En cada una de las dos variantes se mantienen dos líneas de flujo de una de las fases, en la forma convencional, y la otra fase se hace circular en una sola línea de flujo, de forma alternada, entre las etapas de las dos líneas convencionales. Se presenta un algoritmo de cálculo simplificado para hallar las concentraciones de operación en las diferentes etapas. También se presenta un ejemplo numérico con el que se ponen de manifiesto las posibles mejoras obtenibles: a) Mayor intervalo de concentraciones de operación, b) Mayor rendimiento de recuperación de solubles, c) Aumento del número de etapas teóricas equivalente. En cada situación real se precisa la cuantificación de las posibles mejoras, para considerar el interés económico de alguna de las variantes que se proponen.

Summary The disposition of enrofloxacin in sheep was investigated after single-dose intravenous administration of 2.5 mg/kg body weight. Blood samples were drawn from the jugular vein at predetermined times after drug administration. Plasma concentrations of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin were simultaneously determined by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. The data collected were subjected to non-compartmental and compartmental kinetic analysis. Statistical model theory was used to determine non-compartmental pharmacokinetic parameters. Disposition of enrofloxacin was described by a three-compartment open model with elimination from the central compartment following intravascular administration. The elimination half-life, the volume of distribution, and the area under the concentration vs time curve (AUC) were 4.31 h, 1.10 l/kg and 9.24 µg·h/ml, respectively. Enrofloxacin was metabolised to ciprofloxacin and the ratio between the AUCs of ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin was 0.26 after intravenous administration. With predictive models of efficacy (maximum plasma concentrations/minimum inhibitory concentrations [Cmax/MIC] and AUC/MIC ratios in plasma) for most of the sheep pathogen microorganisms, enrofloxacin produced scores higher than 15 and 50, respectively. After intravenous administration at the dose of 2.5 mg/kg, enrofloxacin achieved concentrations several times above the MIC for major pathogen bacteria in plasma, and it may prove useful in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by sensitive pathogens in sheep.

Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an emergent pathogen associated with foodborne diseases, especially foodstuffs of animal origin. A total of 250 beef samples (ground beef and hamburgers) obtained from retail outlets in Santa Fe and Santo Tomé cities, and 150 milk samples from bulk tank milk from dairy barns of the region were analyzed by selective enrichment and immunomagnetic separation. Escherichia coli O157:H7 stx2, eae and ehxA positive strains were isolated from three (1.2%) beef samples. The strains could be differentiated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, phagetyping and genotyping of stx. The milk samples were negative for STEC O157. These findings confirm the role of food of animal origin in the epidemiology of E. coli O157:H7 - associated diseases.

Inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution was used to characterize the surface of different construction materials (marble, sandstone, granite and brick). Surface energy can be divided into two components: dispersive and polar or acid-base. The highest dispersive energy value was found for sandstone, while the values for the other three materials were all very similar. The lower dispersive energy variation exhibited by sandstone with temperature changes is an indication that substances interact equally well with its surface at any temperature. All the materials were found to be amphoteric, with both acid and alkaline components, although acidity was greater in granite and brick and sandstone and marble had higher alkalinity., En este trabajo se ha realizado la caracterización de la superficie de diferentes materiales de construcción (mármol,arenisca, granito y ladrillo) mediante cromatografía inversa gas-sólido a dilución infinita. La energía superficial se puede dividir en dos componentes: dispersiva y ácido-base. Los valores obtenidos para la energía dispersiva son bastante parecidas para mármol, granito y ladrillo, mientras que el valor más alto corresponde a la arenisca. Además, este material presenta una menor variación de la energía dispersiva con la temperatura lo que indica que la interacción de cualquier sustancia con su superficie se dará a cualquier temperatura. Por lo que respecta a las componentes ácido-base, se ha observado que todos los materiales poseen ambas componentes lo que indica un carácter anfótero, sin embargo, la acidez es mayor en el granito y en el ladrillo, mientras que la basicidad es mayor en la arenisca y en el mármol.

In this study, we have attempted to demonstrate the presence of various echographic parameters which could be associated with a non-spontaneous resorption of vitreous haemorrhage in type II diabetes mellitus and correlate these parameters with clinical outcome.We studied 297 eyes of 257 patients with diabetic retinopathy and vitreous haemorrhage without tractional macular retinal detachment ophthalmoscopically and echographically. Of the total eyes studied, a 3-month follow-up visit (including ultrasound) was available in 208 eyes. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of each patient.The echographic parameters associated with non-resorption of the vitreous haemorrhage were: extramacular tractional retinal detachment, fibrovascular membranes and location of the haemorrhage within the subhyaloidal space (in contrast to within the intragel space). In addition, the duration of the vitreous haemorrhage and the presence of panretinal laser photocoagulation at the time of presentation with a vitreous haemorrhage influenced the resolution of the vitreous haemorrhage. We were also able to construct a logarithmic function that could be used to predict the prognosis of a vitreous haemorrhage in type II diabetes mellitus.When employed to evaluate vitreous haemorrhages in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, ocular ultrasound can provide useful prognostic information regarding the lack of resorption of vitreous haemorrhages in type II diabetics.

Cryptococcosis is often seen in immunodeficient patients, including those with AIDS. It usually affects mainly the respiratory tract and central nervous system. We present a rare case of pleural involvement with no sign of disease at other sites. A review of the literature yields only three other similar cases. We discuss the diverse clinical manifestations of cryptococcosis, particularly those found in the respiratory tract.

Experimental breakthrough curves of batch fluidized beds have been used to predict the performance of a semi-continuous, countercurrent ion-exchange column. The results of prediction and experiment show a good agreement.
