Abstract

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN (PS212) is to measure the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom lifetime with 10% precision. Such a measurement would yield a precision of 5% on the value of the $S$-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths combination $|a_0-a_2|$. Based on part of the collected data we present a first result on the lifetime, $\tau=[2.91 ^{+0.49}_{-0.62}]\times 10^{-15}$ s, and discuss the major systematic errors. This lifetime corresponds to $|a_0-a_2|=0.264 ^{+0.033}_{-0.020} m_{\pi}^{-1}$.

Abstract

The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN is to measure with high precision the lifetime of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ($A_{2\pi}$), which is of order $3\times10^{-15}$ s, and thus to determine the s-wave $\pi\pi$-scattering lengths difference $|a_{0}-a_{2}|$. $A_{2\pi}$ atoms are detected through the characteristic features of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs from the atom break-up (ionization) in the target. We report on a first high statistics atomic data sample obtained from p Ni interactions at 24 GeV/$c$ proton momentum and present the methods to separate the signal from the background., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The DIRC (acronym for Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov (light)) is a new type of Cherenkov ring imaging detector based on total internal reflection that is used for the first time in the BaBar detector at the PEP-II ring of SLAC. The Cherenkov radiators are long rectangular bars made of synthetic fused silica, the photon detector is a water tank equipped with an array of 10,752 conventional photomultipliers. The first year operational experience in the BaBar detector is presented using cosmic data and collision data in the energy region of the /spl Upsi/(4S) resonance.

Abstract

The DIRC is a new type of Cherenkov imaging device that will be used for the first time in the BABAR detector at the asymmetric B-factory, PEP-II. It is based on total internal reflection and uses long, rectangular bars made from synthetic fused silica as Cherenkov radiator and light guide. The principles of the DIRC ring imaging Cherenkov technique are explained and results from the prototype program are presented. Abstract

The DIRC, a new type of ring-imaging Cherenkov detector that images internally reflected Cherenkov light, is being constructed as the main hadronic particle identification component of the BABAR detector at SLAC. The device makes use of 5 meter long fused silica (colloquially called quartz) bars, which serve both as the Cherenkov radiators and as light pipes for transmitting the light to an array of photo-multiplier tubes. This paper describes a program of research and development aimed at determining whether bars that meet the stringent requirements of the DIRC can be obtained from commercial sources. The results of studies of bulk absorption of fused silica, surface finish, radiation damage and bulk inhomogeneities are discussed.

The WA94 collaboration uses the production of strange and anti-strange particles to investigate the properties of hot hadronic matter created in heavy-ion interactions. Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \), Ξ− and\(\bar \Xi ^ + \) particle yields and transverse mass spectra are presented for pS interactions and are compared with those for SS interactions and for the pW and SW interactions of WA85.

Abstract

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω/Ξ seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Abstract

Results on Ks0 production at central rapidity in sulphur-tungsten interactions are presented. The selection procedure used to identify Ks0 particles through their decay to two charged pions is described. The mT spectra for Ks0, Λ and Λ and the relative production rates K s 0 Λ and K s 0 Λ , calculated in the kinematic region pT > 1 GeV/c and 2.5 ≤ yLAB ≤ 3.0, are discussed.

We present preliminary results about charged particle production in SS collisions at 200 GeV/ c per nucleon, obtained by WA94 experiment at CERN-SPS. The particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH; a silicon telescope and an array of multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) have been used to track particles to the RICH detector. Details about particle tracking and identification procedure are also reported.

Abstract

We study the production of meson resonance atpT≥2 GeV/c inπ− Be interactions at two beam energies (150 and 300 GeV/c). The motivation is to look for the higher twist (HT) production mechanism, expected to exist besides standard hadron production through the fragmentation process of scattered quarks and gluons, the so-called leading twist (LT) mechanism. We show that the φ, K*0 (892) andK*0 (892) are found free from HT effects with a good accuracy, as expected from HT estimates and QCD sum rules. The magnitudes of thef2(1270) andρ0 mesons signals are found larger than expected from the standard Lund (LT) Monte Carlo and from information provided bye+e− annihilation experiments. The possible connection of these excesses with HT physics is discussed. We also report the first evidence for the production off0(975) mesons in hadronic experiments at largepT.

Abstract

We discuss in a wider context the connection of the results previously obtained on the decay processes η/η′→π+π−γ with respect to the ξ test of QCD proposed by Chanowitz. We show that one can add consistently to the four Chanowitz equations an equation obtained by Novikovet al. Akhoury and Frere which involvesJ/ψ decays. We show that the formerly defined model M2 of the ϱ mass distribution accommodates easily this new constraint, while model M1 indicates an inconsistency with η data. We study the consequences of both M1 and M2 in the description of η/η′→μ+μ−γ and η/η′→e+e−γ decays and we find a good agrement with the existing measurements. Consistency of the procedure we propose is illustrated by deriving from η/η′→π+π−γ and η/η′→μ+μ−γ decays the branching fractions η/η′→γγ. We finally examine the consistency of the results obtained using the equations on box and triangle anomalies with the decaysV→Pγ andP→Vγ, whereP andV are the usual pseudoscalar and vector mesons. Using standard SU(3) relations among coupling constants, we find consistency of our previous results with most of these radiative decay modes. The set of meson radiative decays thus addressed consists of 21 processes. As a result of all these checks, we improve the picture provided by these two models, one (M1) in agreement with QCD, one (M2) in basic disagreement with it. Ways to go beyond this confirmed ambiguity are proposed.

Multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. We present the transverse mass distributions of negative particles, K o s, Λs, Λ s, and Ξ − s produced in sulphurtungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon and give the corrected ratios Λ Λ, Ξ − Λ and Ξ − /Λ . We note that our ratio Ξ − / Λ appears large in comparison to that from p p interactions.

Abstract

We report results on the production of strange baryons/antibaryons with 1, 2, and 3 units of strangeness (Λ, Ξ and Ω) and mesons (K s 0 , K + and K − ) in WA85 experiment at the CERN SPS. This experiment was designed to study the production of strange particles in central SW collisions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon, in the central rapidity region with medium to high p t . We have measured the inverse slopes of the m t distributions of such particles and the production ratios Λ /Λ, Ξ + /Ξ − , Ξ − / Λ , Ξ + / Λ , K s 0 / Λ , K s 0 / Λ , (Ω − + Ω + ) (Ξ − + Ξ + ) and K + K − . Preliminary results on the production ratios Ξ − / Λ and Ξ + / Λ in pW collisions at 200 GeV/c are also presented.

Abstract

We study the shape of the invariant mass spectra of several resonances produced atPT≧2.0 GeV/c and observed through two-particle final states, namely thef2(1270),K*(892),\(\bar K*(892)\),K*(1430), and\(\bar K*(1430)\) mesons. The data sample comes from π− Be interactions atPlab=150 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c which have been collected using the OMEGA spectrometer at CERN. We find that although these meson resonances have their masses and widths consistent with the corresponding world average values, their shapes are all subject to the same kind of distortion: their low-mass tail is enhanced while their high-mass tail is sharply cut. This observation indicates that meson resonances produced in the fragmentation of quarks and gluons are distorted by the same damping factor in a way which preserves their masses and lifetimes.

Abstract

We present the analysis of data samples taken by the WA77 experiment for π- interactions at 300 and 150 GeV/c. The trigger selects a pair of oppositely charged particles withp T ≥2 GeV/c balancing the transverse momentum of a third high-p T track. The primary aim of this experiment was the search for higher-twist production, mainly that of vector mesons. Since there are definite predictions for the polarization of mesons produced in fragmentation and through the higher-twist mechanism, we study the polarization properties of clearly identified mesons, namely the Φ and f2(1270) mesons. The results are compatible with no polarization. This can be interpreted as a production dominantly due to parton fragmentation.

Abstract

Using the simple electrostatic model initiated by Endo et al., we propose a model for pad chambers valid when pads have a rectangular shape. The result gives the framework of a realistic Monte Carlo simulation. We show that this model exhibits all the properties already known from pad and strip chambers. This model allows for the definition of new algorithms to find the avalanche location with good accuracy and no (or nearly no) bias in contrast with the standard centroid method. The quality of the impact reconstruction is studied within a chamber geometry which highly favours small size clusters (two and three strips reconstructed from pads). We show that an accuracy of 100 μm is easily achieved (compared with a pad pitch of 4.5 mm) and this limit is intimately related with the level of the white noise. Other consequences of the model are also studied.

Abstract

We have performed a search for vector-vector final states centrally produced in proton proton interactions at 300 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Evidence is found for ωρ0 production in the reactionpp→p f (2π+2π−2π0)p s and for ωω production in the reactionpp→p f (2π+2π−2π0)p s . However no evidence is found for ωo production in the reactionpp→p f (K + K −π+π−π0)p s .

Abstract

The transverse momentum distributions for\(\rho ^0 (770),f_2 (1270),K*^0 (892),\bar K*^0 (892)\) and ϕ (1020) have been studied in thept region between 2 and 4 GeV/c and central rapidity. The data analysed come from the WA77 experiment at CERN with a 300 GeV/c π− beam incident on a Be target. These distributions are well described by the functionpt−n withn∼8. A sample of simulated events from the Lund Monte Carlo in the same experimental conditions reproduces well the data.

Abstract

We have studied the reactions $$({{\pi ^ + } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\pi ^ + } p}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} p})p \to ({{\pi ^ + } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\pi ^ + } p}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} p})(K\bar K\pi )p$$ where the $$K\bar K\pi $$ system is centrally produced, at 85 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c using the CERN Omega spectrometer. A spin-parity analysis of theK 0 K ± π ∓ system shows the presence of a strongJ PC=1++ signal which we identify as theE/f 1 (1420) meson. We also find evidence for the decayE/f 1(1420)→K 0 K 0 π 0 which determines theC-parity of this state to be positive. Alternative explanations of the data have been tested and ruled out. Hence we obtain the quantum numbers of theE/f 1 (1420) to beI G(JPC)=0+(1+).

Abstract

Multi-strange baryon and antibaryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for quark-gluon plasma formation. We present the transverse mass distributions of negative particles, Λ' s , Λ ' s and Ξ − ' s produced in sulphur-tungsten interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon and give the corrected rations Λ /Λ, Ξ − /Λ and Ξ − / Λ . Our ratio Ξ − / Λ appears to be larger than that from pp interactions.

Abstract

We have studied the ππ andK\(\bar K\) systems centrally produced in proton proton collisions at 300 GeV/c and π+/p proton collisions at 85 GeV/c using the CERN Ω spectrometer. Clear evidence forS*/fo(975) production is observed. An analysis performed on the π+ π− mass spectrum in the 1.0 GeV region, using a coupled channel formalism, shows that it is possible to describe theS*/fo(975) effect with one single resonance once interference of theS*/fo(975) with theS-wave background is introduced. The resultingS*/fo(975) parameters aremo=979±4MeV,gπ=0.28±0.04,gK=0.56±0.18 corresponding to a pole position on sheet II at (1001±2)−i(36±4) MeV. Evidence is also found for a structure having a mass of 1472±12 MeV and a width of 195±33 MeV.

Abstract

Production of multi-strange baryons and antibaryons is expected to be a useful indicator in the search for Quark-Gluon Plasma formation. Production of Ξ− and Ξ − has been observed for the first time in ultra-relativistic heavy ion interactions by the WA85 Experiment. We describe the procedure used to select these cascade candidates and show that Ξ− and Ξ − decays can be identified. Preliminary ratios of Ξ/Ξ production in sulphur-tungsten and proton-tungsten interactions are also presented.

Abstract

The reactionpp→pf(K+K-π+π-)ps, where theK+K− π+π- system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c. TheK*0\(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state has been observed and the cross sections for its central production are found to be the same at 300 and 85 GeV/c. TheK*0\(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state appears to be produced as a non-resonant threshold enhancement.

Abstract

Preliminary results from the WA85 Experiment at the CERN Omega Spectrometer are presented. A 200 A GeV/c beam of 22S ions was used with a tungsten target. The apparatus is used to detect V°s and charged tracks in the range PT > 0.9 GeV/c and 2.3 Λ, Λ and cascade particles is discussed. A study of the multiplicity dependence of Λ, Λ and hadron production is presented.

Abstract

Results from the WA85 Experiment at the CERN Ω Spectrometer are presented. A 200 A GeV/ c beam of 32 S ions was used with a tungsten target. The apparatus is used to detect V 0, s and charged tracks in the range p T > 0.9 GeV/ c and 2.3 Y lab Λ and negative hadrons all show a linear increase with rapidity density in the range 70–140 as expected from models based on a superposition of independent NN collisions.

Abstract

The reactionpp→p f (π+π−π0)p s , where the π+π−π0 system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c. The π+π−π0 mass spectrum shows evidence for the η, ω anda 2 (1320) as well as an enhancement in thea 1 (1260) region. A Dalitz plot analysis of the π+π−π0 system has been performed. Thea 1 (1260) parameters coming from the fit of the 1+ S wave arem=1208±15 MeV and Γ=430±50 MeV. No evidence is found for theh 1(1170) orh 1(1380).

Abstract

We have used the Fermilab 30-in. bubble chamber--hybrid spectrometer to study the rapidities of produced particles'' in the interactions of 200-GeV/{ital c} protons and {pi}{sup +} and {ital K}{sup +} mesons with nuclei of gold, silver, and magnesium. The average rapidity decreases linearly with the number of projectile collisions {nu}{sub {ital p}} (up to {nu}{sub {ital p}}=5) with no {ital A} dependence and little beam dependence. The ratio {ital R} of normalized rapidity distributions for hadron-nucleus to hadron-proton interactions shows a plateau in the central region, and becomes much larger in the target region. However, the increase is significantly less than has been reported in previous experiments. As a function of {nu}{sub {ital p}}, the ratio {ital R} rises linearly in the target region, more gently in the central region, and decreases slowly in the projectile region, in all cases with no {ital A} dependence. Some discrepancies with a previous experiment are observed in the central region. Long-range rapidity correlations are observed in hadron-nucleus events, but not in hadron-proton events. For the former, it is shown that the correlations exist only for those events with multiple projectile collisions, as expected in the multichain dual parton model.

Abstract

The DIRAC spectrometer has been commissioned at CERN with the aim of detecting $\pi^+ \pi^-$ atoms produced by a 24 GeV/$c$ high intensity proton beam in thin foil targets. A challenging apparatus is required to cope with the high interaction rates involved, the triggering of pion pairs with very low relative momentum, and the measurement of the latter with resolution around 0.6 MeV/$c$. The general characteristics of the apparatus are explained and each part is described in some detail. The main features of the trigger system, data-acquisition, monitoring and setup performances are also given., Comment: 49 pages, 37 figures. Abstract

The DIRAC experiment aims to measure the lifetime of π+π− atoms in the ground state with 10% precision, using the 24 GeV/c proton beam of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. As the value of the above lifetime of order 10−15s is dictated by a strong interaction at low energy, the precise measurement of this quantity enables to determine a combination of S‐wave pion scattering lengths to 5%. Pion scattering lengths have been calculated in the framework of chiral perturbation theory with high precision. Thus the accurate measurement of these values would submit the understanding of chiral symmetry breaking of QCD to a crucial test. Some preliminary results from the analysis of a 2000 data sample are presented.

Abstract

A dedicated particle identification system based on the Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov (DIRC) light will be used in the BaBar detector. We provide an overview of the DIRC concept, design, and expected performance of the production device and a status report on its construction and commissioning. The DIRC is expected to be operating in the BaBar detector on beam line at the PEP-II B Factory in late spring 1999.

Abstract

The WA94 experiment uses the production of strange particles and antiparticles to investigate the properties of hot hadronic matter created in heavy-ion interactions. Λ, Λ , Ξ− and Ξ + particle yields and transverse mass spectra are presented for pS interactions. These results are compared with those from SS interactions. Our results are also compared with those from pW and SW interactions of the WA85 experiment.

Abstract

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω gX seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Abstract

Strange and multistrange baryon and antibaryon production has been studied in sulphur sulphur interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon at central rapidity using the CERN Omega Spectrometer. Particle production ratios and transverse mass spectra are presented for Λ, Ξ−, Λ and Ξ−.

Abstract

The primary aim of the WA85 experiment is the study of strange and multistrange baryon and anti‐baryon production. Particles are detected in the kinematic window of central rapidity and pT≳1.0 GeV/c. Results on the production of Λ, Λ,Ξ− and Ξ− hyperons in proton‐tungsten interactions from the 1990 run are presented and compared with the sulphur‐tungsten data.

Abstract

Strange and, especially, multistrange baryon and anti‐baryon production is expected to be a useful probe in the search for Quark‐Gluon Plasma formation. A review of WA85 results on strange and multistrange particle production in SW and pW interactions at 200 GeV/c per nucleons is presented. In particular, mT distributions and relative ratios are presented for Ξ−s, Ξ−s, Λs, Λs, and K0s.

Abstract

WA97 is designed to study strange and multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production in 160 A GeV c PbPb collisions at the SPS with a telescope of silicon microdetectors. Four planes of silicon pixel detectors were successfully employed during the 1994 Pb run. A total of 60M central PbPb events were collected. We describe the experimental setup and report on some preliminary results from the off-line analysis.

Abstract

Motivated by nearly unanimous claim that the observed mass spectrum η′ → π+π-γ is not that expected from pure ρ0 dominance, we reanalyze all the published data on η/η′ → π+π-γ decays. We find non-resonant contributions. In order to evaluate precisely the magnitude of these terms, we also refit the e+e- → π+π- data to get reliably the ρ0 parameters and decay amplitude. We show that identifying the non-resonant contribution with the box anomaly predicted by QCD and chiral theories, one achieves a consistent picture. Several checks are performed which show the consistency of our fitted parameters. From four measurements, we determinef 1,f 8 and θPS on purely experimental grounds, and we find them in the expected range. Presently available data allow for two solutions, one is consistent with QCD, the other favours integral charge quark models. We show that presently available data do not allow to choose among these two solutions. We discuss the interrelation of uncertainties in e+e- → π+π- physics with our two solutions.
