1. Forming equal mass planetary binaries via pebble accretion

Abstract: Binary solar system objects are common and range from satellite systems with very large mass ratios $M_1/M_2$ to mass ratios very close to unity. A well-known example of a binary is the Pluto-Charon system. With Charon only eight times less massive than Pluto the question arises as for many other systems, why the mass-ratio is still close to unity. There is much evidence that (binary) planet(esimal) formation happened early, when the protoplanetary gas disk was still around. It is likely that (some of) these binaries grew up together subject to pebble accretion. Here we focus on the question of how the mass arriving in the gravitational influence zone of the binary during pebble accretion, is distributed over the binary components. Does the accretion through time lead to a converging mass ratio, or to a diverging mass ratio? We numerically integrate pebble paths in the same well-known fashion as for a single mass subject to pebble accretion and track what the efficiency of accretion is for the two separate binary components, compared to a single body with the same mass. These numerical simulations are done for a range of binary mass-ratios, mutual separations, Stokes numbers and two orbital distances, 2.5 and 39 au. We find that in the limit where pebbles start to spiral around the primary (this holds for relatively large pebbles), the pebble preferentially collides with the secondary, causing the mass ratio to converge towards unity on Myr timescales. In this regime the total sweep-up efficiency can lower to half that of a pebble-accreting single body because pebbles that are thrown out of the system, after close encounters with the system. The results show that systems such as Pluto-Charon and other larger equal mass binaries could well have co-accreted by means of pebble accretion in the disk phase without producing binaries with highly diverging mass-ratios., 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: Multiple blockholder structures are a widespread phenomenon in the U.S. The theoretical literature, however, provides conflicting predictions on whether a single large blockholder or a set of dispersed smaller blockholders is better for firm value. Using U.S. data, we find a negative correlation between Tobin's Q and blockholder dispersion. The findings are robust to a wide variety of model specifications and controls and differ from results for other geographic regions such as Europe and Asia. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: We present a new tracking device based on glass capillary bundles or layers filled with highly purified liquid scintillator and read out at one end by means of image intensifiers and CCD devices. A large-volume prototype consisting of 5 x 10(5) capillaries with a diameter of 20 mu m and a length of 180 cm and read out by a megapixel CCD has been tested with muon and neutrino beams at CERN. With this prototype a two track resolution of 33 mu m was achieved with passing through muons. Images of neutrino interactions in a capillary bundle have also been acquired and analysed. Read-out chains based on Electron Bombarded CCD (EBCCD) and image pipeline devices are also investigated. Preliminary results obtained with a capillary bundle read out by an EBCCD are presented.

Abstract: The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract: One of the most intriguing problems in science is and has always been the understanding of our Sun. Despite their elusiveness, millions upon millions of neutrinos hit each human being every second. Unless a neutrino scores a direct hit on an atomic nucleus (which only rarely occurs), it passes through without leaving a hint of its passage. Yet neutrinos are amongst the most important particles in the Universe. Because they emerge unscathed from the core of the Sun, they carry information about solar processes that we cannot observe otherwise. Approximately 97% of the energy released by the Sun is produced in the form of charged particles or photons. The remaining ~3% appears in the form of the kinetic energy of neutrinos. Ever since Davis and his collaborators started to observe the solar neutrino flux in the Homestake mine, we have for almost 30 years been faced with the problem of observing only about 30% of the expected neutrino flux. The solar neutrino problem originates from the discrepancy between the expected solar neutrino flux, as calculated by the standard solar model (SSM), and experimental results.

Abstract: We give an overview of the main features of the CMS trigger and data acquisition (DAQ) system. Then, we illustrate the strategies and trigger configurations (trigger tables) developed for the detector calibration and physics program of the CMS experiment, at start-up of LHC operations, as well as their possible evolution with increasing luminosity. Finally, we discuss the expected CPU time performance of the trigger algorithms and the CPU requirements for the event filter farm at start-up.

A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for ντ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36 182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin22θμτ

Abstract: The CHORUS experiment searches for ν μ ↔ν τ oscillation. To aid in the momentum reconstruction of charged hadrons, a honeycomb tracker was built with three orientations of six planes each. The planes are manufactured by point-welding together two precision folded conductive polycarbonate foils, forming hexagonal tubes with 30 μm thick anode wires in the center. The honeycomb tracker in CHORUS is read out using a bitstream principle. The amplified signal of each wire is binary sampled every 5 ns and stored in a 256 bit circular buffer, implemented in dual-port memories. This technique allows a full reconstruction of a 1.28 μs history of each wire. Eighteen cards, each handling 72 wires, are read out over a single flat cable using a card-to-card pipeline.

Abstract: The double-differential coincidence cross section for the reaction {sup 1}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital p}){pi}{sup 0} has been measured at {ital Q}{sup 2}=0.1(GeV/{ital c}){sup 2} in a range in the invariant mass of 2--14 MeV above threshold. From the angular dependence of the data values of the pion {ital s}-wave multipoles {ital E}{sub 0+} and {ital L}{sub 0+} have been extracted. The results are compared to predictions from chiral perturbation theory and models based on an effective Lagrangian. None of the models is able to describe both the {ital E}{sub 0+} and the {ital L}{sub 0+} multipoles.

Abstract: Coincidence cross sections for the 12 C(e, e′pp) and 12 C(e, e′p) reactions have been measured in the Δ-resonance region. The 12 C(e, e′pp) reaction has been measured at three different angular settings of the proton detectors to investigate the angular correlation between the emitted protons. The data, which have a low statistical accuracy, are compared with a calculation based on the direct-knockout mechanism, which includes one- and two-body currents. NN-correlations are accounted for via a correlation function, Δ-excitation via a two-body current and final-state interactions of the emitted protons via an optical potential. The 12 C(e, e′p) data, taken at large proton-emission angles, cover the region of high missing-energy values (145–275 MeV). The data are compared to results of a calculation taking into account meson exchange, intermediate Δ-excitation and pion production. This comparison shows that there is ample evidence for processes leading to multi-nucleon knockout.

Abstract: The reaction $^{12}C({e,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\mathrm{pp})$ has been studied at an energy transfer $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}212\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ and a three-momentum transfer $|\mathit{q}|\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}70\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/c$. The measured missing-energy spectrum shows a signature for knockout of proton pairs from $(1p{)}^{2}$, $(1p,1s)$, and $(1s{)}^{2}$ states. A comparison of the data with a calculation, in which different processes leading to two-nucleon knockout are accounted for, shows that the measured cross section for the knockout of a $(1p{)}^{2}$ pair can largely be attributed to short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations.

Abstract: A first analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. The search for nu (tau) charged current events has been performed for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the tau lepton. Abstract: High-momentum components of proton momentum distributions in $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ have been studied from 300 to 500 MeV/c with the ($e,{e}^{\ensuremath{'}}p$) reaction. Cross sections were measured with 180 keV excitation-energy resolution for transitions to the low-lying ${\mathrm{\textonehalf{}}}^{+}$, ${\frac{3}{2}}^{+}$, ${\frac{11}{2}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, ${\frac{5}{2}}^{+}$, and ${\frac{7}{2}}^{+}$ states in $^{207}\mathrm{Tl}$. The data are compared to distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations with mean-field wave functions and with wave functions that include nucleon-nucleon correlations. The data are substantially larger than mean-field predictions. The observed excess strength at low excitation energy appears to be mainly due to long-range correlations and not to short-range and tensor correlations.

Abstract: Angular distributions and total cross sections for the [sup 4]He([pi][sup +],[ital pp])[sup 2]H reaction have been measured with small relative uncertainties at incident energies of [ital T][sub [pi]][sup +]=64, 87, 114, 162, 217, 278, and 327 MeV. The results strongly support the quasideuteron absorption model for pion absorption on two nucleons, which is found to contribute only [approx]50% to the total absorption cross section near the [Delta] resonance. All essential reaction channels of pion absorption near the [Delta] resonance on heavier nuclei seem to be present in [sup 4]He, but not in [sup 3]He. Any nuclear-density-related increase of pion absorption in [sup 4]He relative to [sup 2]H is [lt]50% and no binding energy effect is found.

Abstract: Two plastic scintillator arrays with fast read-out electronics have been constructed for proton detection in an electron scattering environment. The detectors, one consisting of 47 and the other of 53 scintillators, each subtend a 39 msr solid angle and cover dynamic ranges of 25–158 and 37–198 MeV, respectively. The segmentation of the detector allows detection at forward scattering angles (> 50°) at a luminosity of 8×10 36 nucleons s −1 cm −2 (at about 1 MHz per element). The charge and time of arrival of each photomultiplier signal are digitized by two Flash ADCs. The read-out of background events is suppressed efficiently by a proper coincidence requirement in the first-level trigger. An unambiguous identification of protons and pions is obtained. The energy resolution amounts to 3.3 MeV for 87 MeV protons, while the intrinsic timing resolution is estimated at 0.6 ns.

Abstract: The reactions 12 C (e,e′pp) and 12 C (e,e′p) have been studied at an energy transfer ω = 210 MeV and a momentum transfer ‖q‖ = 267 MeV/c. The angular correlation between two emitted protons has been measured keeping the position of the electron spectrometer and one proton detector fixed, while the position of the other detector was varied around the conjugate angle. A clear signature for the emission of two correlated protons has been observed.

Abstract: The ratios of prompt to delayed fission yields for the isotopes U-233, U-234, U-235, U-236, U-238, Np-237, Pu-242, and Pu-244 and the fission probabilities relative to each other have been investigated experimentally. Using the value of the total fission probability for Np-237 the absolute probabilities for prompt and delayed fission have been determined. The fission probabilities per muon capture P(fc) have been derived for all the isotopes and compared with an evaluation based on excitation functions from theory.

Abstract: The probability for delayed muon induced fission of209Bi has been determined from a (μ−,f1f2) measurement. The measured fission probability Pf=(4.2±0.7)×10−5 is compared with theoretical predictions. The high fission threshold reaction seems well suited for studying the influence of two-body meson-exchange currents in nuclear muon capture.

Abstract: A study of muonic238U has been performed in a combined (μ−,γ f) and (μ−,γγ) coincidence experiment to investigate the role of non-radiative transitions and their fission probabilities. An augmentation of the outer fission barrier ofΔEb=(0.6±0.1) MeV due to the presence of the muon is deduced. A significant contribution to the prompt fission yield not only results from the (2p→1s) and (3d→1s) non-radiative transitions, but also from other radiationless transitions. Specifically, the measured fission probabilities of the transitions (2p→1s), (3d→1s), and (3p→1s) are (1.5±0.4)%, (5.7±1.7)%, and (5.3±1.9)%, respectively.

Abstract: Fission fragments from the reaction237Np(μ−,γ,f) have been measured in coincidence with muonic X-rays. The efficiency of the fission fragment detector is determined from (μ−,γ,f)-data of the same experiment. The total fission probability perμ-stopPt has been measured as well as the fission probabilities Pf of the non-radiative muonic (3d→1s)- and (2p→1s)-transitions; the latter has been divided into two parts leading to different mean excitation energiesE:P t =(54±17)%,P f (3d→1s)=(41±21)%,P f (2p→1s,E=6.218 MeV)=(61±19)%, andP f (2p→1s,E=6.525 MeV)=(57±18)%. The influence of the muon on the fission barrier is discussed. The fission probability after muon capture is compared with a calculated value using a distribution of nuclear excitation energies following muon capture and the fission probability as measured in a238U(3He,αf)-reaction.

Abstract: The probabilities of muon attachment to fission fragments in the prompt fission of237Np have been determined as a function of fragment mass and total kinetic energy release in a (μ −,f 1 f 2 e −)-coincidence measurement. A strong dependence of the attachment probability on the fragment mass is observed. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: The probabilities for non-radiative (n.r.) excitationsP n.r. in the muonic nuclides208Pb,232Th, and238U have been determined from (μ−,γγ)-measurements by comparing the intensities of muonic X-ray transitions in single and coincidence spectra. The value ofP n.r. (3p→1s), measured for the first time, is about 90% for the actinides232Th and238U, but only about 8% for208Pb. The value ofP n.r. (3d→1s) is found to be 10 % for233Th, 13% for238U, and about 4% for208Pb. For208Pb a vanishing strength of the n.r. decay of the 2p-level is found, while for232Th and for238U n.r. strengths of about 20% and 26%, respectively, are observed. By regarding two subcomplexes of the 2p→1s transitions leading to different mean excitation energies the n.r. transition probabilities were found to be different for238U only, 21.6% and 31.1.%, respectively.

Abstract: CHORUS is an experiment searching for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a hybrid setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for nu(tau) charged current interactions where the tau lepton decays to mu(mu)nu(tau). In a sample of 31,423 nu(mu) charged current interactions, no nu(tau) candidates were found. For large Delta m(mu tau)(2) values, a limit on the mixing angle of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 3.5 x 10(-3) at 90% C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result. Abstract: The CERN RD46 Collaboration is developing a new high resolution tracking detector based on glass capillaries filled with liquid scintillator. In this framework we have built a read-out chain based on a newly developed device: the Megapixel Electron Bombarded CCD (EBCCD). This device is a hybrid image-intensifier tube, with a 1024×1024 pixels CCD chip in place of the phosphor screen. The tube has a 40 mm diameter photocathode, is gateable and zoomable from 0.62 to 1.3. The EBCCD tube is able to detect single photoelectrons, with a signal to noise ratio better than 10. This Megapixel multichannel photon counting device is attractive for many applications in high-energy physics, astrophysics, biomedical diagnostics, and very low-light imaging.

Abstract: We report on the first direct observation of a neutrino induced charged-current interaction with two subsequent decays of short-lived particles close to the interaction vertex. This rare double-kink signature in the CHORUS emulsion target is interpreted as a D-s*(+) production followed by the decay chain D-s*(+) --> D-s(+) gamma, D-s(+) --> tau(+) v(tau),tau(+) --> mu(+) v(mu)v(tau). The event is characterised by small Q(2) and small four-momentum transfer squared t to the target nucleon, which indicates a diffractive production mechanism. Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for nu(tau) charged current interactions followed by the tau lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no tau(-) candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search fur nu(tau) interactions using the muonic decay mode (36182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 1.8.10(-3) (at large Delta m(2)) has been derived. Abstract: The aim of this project is to develop high resolution tracking devices based on thin glass capillary arrays filled with liquid scintillator. This technique provides high hit densities and a position resolution better than 20 μm. The radiation hardness of more than 100 Mrad makes capillary arrays superior to other types of tracking devices with comparable performance. The technique is attractive for inner tracking in collider experiments, micro-vertex devices, or active targets for short-lived particle detection in high-energy physics experiments. During 1996 and 1997, two prototype capillary bundles (1.8 m and 0.9 m in length) were put into operation. One of them was equipped with a conventional opto-electronic read-out chain and the other, for the first time, with a new device, the Electron-Bombarded CCD (EBCCD) imaging tube. The development of planar capillary layers is another aspect of the R&D activity. Details of the design and the performance are given.

Abstract: We extended the parametrization of the phenomenological optical potential for pionic atoms by allowing for an isospin-dependence of the absorption parameters. Least squares fits to the 140 selected pionic atom data are performed. The new parameter set indicates a significant isospin dependence and is able to provide a simultaneous description of shifts and widths for the previously problematic deeply bound 3d-orbits in elements such as 181Ta, natRe, natPt, 197Au, 208Pb and 209Bi.

Abstract: New results were obtained on pionic 1s levels in 24Mg, 27Al and 28Si, on 2p states in 93Nb and natRu, as well as on 3d states in 93Nb, natRu, natAg and natCd. For the first time the predicted repulsive shifts for the pionic 2p level have been observed. The following values were obtained for the strong-interaction shifts and widths (all values in keV); 24Mg: e1s0 = −80.5 ± 0.6 and Γ1s0 = 24.3 ± 1.6; 27Al: e1s0 = −115.5 ± 1.4 and Γ1s0 = 28.8 ± 1.2, 28Si: e1s0 = −131.6 ± 2.0 and Γ1s0 = 41 ± 4;93Nb: e2p0 = −11 ± 3, Γ2p0 = 64 ± 8, e3d0 = 0.74 ± 0.02 and Γ3d0 = 0.402 ± 0.016; natRu: e2p0 = −48 ± 7, Γ2p0 = 77 ± 24, e3d0 = 1.39 ± 0.08 and Γ3d0 = 0.75 ± 0.08; natAg: e3d0 = 1.94 ± 0.07 and Γ3d0 = 1.44 ± 0.05 and natCd: e3d0 = 2.14 ± 0.09 and Γ3d0 = 1.65 ± 0.07. The results are in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the standard optical potentials.

Abstract: The time spectra for muon induced fission of233U,234U,235U,236U,238U, and237Np were measured simultaneously, detecting both fragments in coincidence in a fast multi parallel plate avalanche detector. The observed mean lifetimes τ are 68.9 ± 0.3 ns, 70.6 ± 0.2 ns, 72.2 ±0.2 ns, 74.3 ± 0.3 ns, 77.0 ±0.4 ns, and 69.8 ±0.2 ns for the above isotopes, respectively. No second time component, tentatively ascribed to a possible fission isomer, was observed. The deduced total capture rates are compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We have developed a new detector technique that allows high quality imaging of ionizing particle tracks with very high spatial and time resolution. Central to this technique are liquid-core fibres of about 20 μm diameter read out by an optoelectronic system including a CCD. The fibres act simultaneously as target, detector and light guides. A large-volume prototype, consisting of 5 × 10 5 capillaries of 20 μm diameter and 180 cm length, has been tested in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam. A sample of high-multiplicity neutrino interactions was recorded, demonstrating the imaging quality of this detector. First results from the reconstruction of these events are reported. A track residual of 28 μm and a vertex resolution of 30 μm has been achieved. Future applications of capillary detectors for neutrino and beauty physics are being investigated within the framework of the RD46 collaboration.

Abstract: A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for nu( --> mu(tau) oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract: WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for ν μ → ν τ oscillation, has been successlly constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract: The ratio of neutron and proton yields at quasifree kinematics was measured for the reactions {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital n}) and {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital p}) at momentum transfers {ital Q}{sup 2}=0.125, 0.255, 0.417, and 0.605(GeV/{ital c}){sup 2}, detecting the neutron and the proton simultaneously in the same scintillator array. The neutron detection efficiency was measured {ital in} {ital situ} with the {sup 1}H({gamma},{pi}{sup +}){ital n} reaction. From this the ratio {ital R} of {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital n}) and {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital p}) cross sections was determined and used to extract the neutron magnetic form factor {ital G}{sup {ital n}}{sub {ital M}} in a model insensitive approach, resulting in an inaccuracy between 2.1% and 3.3% in {ital G}{sup {ital n}}{sub {ital M}}.

Abstract: The first experiment to be performed an the internal target facility of NIKHEF-K will be a study of eleclron-induced quasi-elastic proton knock-out from tensor-polarized deuterium. Here, we present the first results from the experimental tests as well as the results of a Monte Carlo simulation, which show the feasibility of the proposed experiment, even at modest luminosities.

46. Scintillating fiber tracker system of the CHORUS experiment

Abstract: The CERN WA95/CHORUS Collaboration has been constructing a detector to search for neutrino oscillations. An essential component of the detector is a scintillating fiber tracker system for precise track reconstruction of particles. 47. The coincidence reactions 12C(e,e’p) and 12C(e,e’pp) in the Δ-excitation region

Abstract: A 12C(e,e’pp) experiment in the Δ‐resonance region with two large solid‐angle and energy‐acceptance proton detectors is described. Double‐coincidence (e,e’p) data, that probe the nuclear response function at high missing‐energies (up to 250 MeV) and high missing‐momenta (up to 850 MeV/c), are compared to a prediction of the few‐nucleon correlation model. A preliminary estimate of the (e,e’pp) triple‐coincidence yield is given.

Abstract: Absorption of positive pions on $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ at 65 MeV has been measured with a large solid angle detector, covering also noncoplanar kinematics. Cross sections for reactions leading to little explored final states with three or four energetic nucleons (ppp,pd, and ppd) have been determined. These processes contribute about 1/3 to the total absorption cross section. Roughly 1/10 of all charged coincidence events involves the emission of a deuteron. Evidence for backward-peaked direct deuteron emission in the pd and ppd channels has been found.

Abstract: We propose to study pionic atoms in low‐lying states. The pions will be produced with the help of recoil free kinematics at small energies in the laboratory. A dedicated detector will be applied allowing the measurements of the width as well as the energy shift of these states.

50. A Study of the Strong Interaction Effects of Deeply Bound Pionic Levels in Pionic Atoms

Abstract: The pionic X-ray spectra of 181Ta, natRe, natPt, 197Au, 208Pb, 209Bi and 237Np have been investigated to obtain data which provide for a systematical investigation of the pionic 3d and 4f levels. Special attention was paid to experimental methods for obtaining clearly improved results as compared to earlier experiments, by using an array of Compton suppression BGO-shields and by using neutron time-of-flight discrimination to reduce background. Also to explore X-rays populating deeply bound pionic 1s-levels in 24Mg, 27A1, 28Si and 2p-orbits in 93Nb, natRu, respectively, coincidence techniques in combination with these high resolution Ge-BGO Compton suppression spectrometers were applied. Only deviations in the width of the pionic 3d-levels are observed. They are narrower by a factor 1.5 as compared to theoretical predictions. The same deviation as for Γ0(3d) is found for the strong interaction quadrupole shift, e2, for both the 4f- and 3d-orbits. An explanation for the difference in Γ0(3d) can be found by adding an isovector absorption term to the optical potential with a negative value for the parameters ImB1 or ImC1.
