Abstract One of the core questions of quantum physics is how to reconcile the unitary evolution of quantum states, which is information-preserving and time-reversible, with evolution following the second law of thermodynamics, which, in general, is neither. The resolution to this paradox is to recognize that global unitary evolution of a multi-partite quantum state causes the state of local subsystems to evolve towards maximum-entropy states. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate this effect in linear quantum optics by simultaneously showing the convergence of local quantum states to a generalized Gibbs ensemble constituting a maximum-entropy state under precisely controlled conditions, while introducing an efficient certification method to demonstrate that the state retains global purity. Our quantum states are manipulated by a programmable integrated quantum photonic processor, which simulates arbitrary non-interacting Hamiltonians, demonstrating the universality of this phenomenon. Our results show the potential of photonic devices for quantum simulations involving non-Gaussian states.

Abstract Quantum simulations are becoming an essential tool for studying complex phenomena, e.g. quantum topology, quantum information transfer and relativistic wave equations, beyond the limitations of analytical computations and experimental observations. To date, the primary resources used in proof-of-principle experiments are collections of qubits, coherent states or multiple single-particle Fock states. Here we show a quantum simulation performed using genuine higher-order Fock states, with two or more indistinguishable particles occupying the same bosonic mode. This was implemented by interfering pairs of Fock states with up to five photons on an interferometer, and measuring the output states with photon-number-resolving detectors. Already this resource-efficient demonstration reveals topological matter, simulates non-linear systems and elucidates a perfect quantum transfer mechanism which can be used to transport Majorana fermions.

In this paper we intend to give a comprehensive description of the current understanding of the detection mechanism in superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. We will review key experimental results related to the detection mechanism, e.g. the variations of the detection probability as a function of bias current, temperature or magnetic field. Commonly used detection models will be introduced and we will analyze their predictions in view of the experimental observations. Although none of the proposed detection models is able to describe all experimental data, it is becoming increasingly clear that vortices are essential for the formation of the initial normal-conducting domain that triggers a detection event. The alkylation of phenytoin, mephenytoin and primidone with n-alkyl iodides in N,N-dimethylacetamide with tetramethylammonium hydroxide was investigated by gas chromatography. With methyl iodide phenytoin and mephenytoin were each converted into a single derivative; the use of other alkyl iodides yielded more than one product. Primidone was converted with methyl iodide and butyl iodide into a major derivative (> 90%) and a minor one. Butylation of the compounds by this method was compared with butylation in an acetone-butyl iodide mixture with potassium carbonate, caesium carbonate or silver oxide added, and with on-column butylation. All these methods resulted in the production of more than one derivative. The derivatives were identified by mass spectrometry and by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. With the acetone-butyl iodide-silver oxide method the main derivatives were O-butylated compounds. The other methods yielded predominantly N-butylated derivatives.

Methods of analysis of the anticancer drug hexamethylmelamine, its physicochemical properties, its therapeutic uses and its fate in vivo upon oral administration, are described. The data are taken in part from the literature, in part from our own studies. The low solubility of hexamethylmelamine in water has prevented the parenteral administration of the drug to humans. The preparation of the water-soluble monohydrochloride of hexamethylmelamine, which may be suitable for this purpose, is reported, as well as its physicochemical characteristics and methods of analysis.
