Background: Neonates affected by isoimmune hemolytic disease (HDN) are at risk of developing severe hyperbilirubinemia. Studies show that increasing levels of bilirubin impact neonatal neurodevelopment. To avoid complications associated with exchange transfusion, intravenous immunoglobulin G (IVIG) is used to treat hyperbilirubinemia. We included all infants who received more than two doses of IVIG treatment for isoimmune hemolytic disease. We analyzed the incidence of side effects associated with IVIG treatment and the rate of exchange transfusion., Methods: A retrospective chart review performed between October 2011-October 2022 at East Carolina University Health identified neonates who received more than two doses IVIG for HDN. Neonates of postmenstrual age greater than 28 days old, receiving less than three doses of IVIG or received IVIG for other indications were excluded. The occurrences of adverse events, demographics and use of other medical therapies were reviewed., Results: Eleven neonates were included in the case series. Most common cause of severe hyperbilirubinemia was attributed to ABO incompatibility. Six patients (54%) received three doses of IVIG, and five patients (45%) received four doses of IVIG with bilirubin levels decreasing below exchange transfusion. No treatment exceeding four doses of IVIG was reported, nor adverse events during treatment., Conclusions: In this cohort of neonates with HDN, bilirubin levels decreased after treatment with multiple doses of IVIG. Future research on recommendations of optimal total number doses of IVIG to reduce the risk for exchange transfusion.

Objective: To assess the effect of mining pollution on birthweight., Design: A retrospective before-and-after study with an untreated comparison group., Setting: La Oroya, a mining town in the Peruvian Andes, considered the most contaminated town in the Andean region., Population: All pregnant women who delivered in the social security healthcare system in years 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. A total of 214 983 births records were used, 957 from La Oroya and 214 026 from the rest of the country., Methods: A difference-in-difference estimation is used to assess the effect of mining pollution on birthweight before and after two business policy changes: a partial environmental improvement and a subsequent closure of smelter operations in La Oroya. Birthweight was compared with a group not affected by the environmental changes in La Oroya., Main Outcome Measures: Birthweight in grams., Results: A steep reduction in mining pollution due to the closure of smelter operations in La Oroya showed an increased birthweight of 71.6 g after controlling for socio-economic and medical characteristics. None of the environmental improvements prior to the closure had a statistically significant effect on birthweight., Conclusions: Mining pollution in La Oroya had a negative impact on birthweight. Partial environmental improvements were not enough to improve birthweight. Background: Up to half of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients report having heartburn that awakens them from sleep during the night. Recumbent-awake and conscious awakenings from sleep during the night are commonly associated with acid reflux events. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of esomeprazole 40 mg once daily on nighttime acid reflux, frequency of conscious awakenings associated with acid reflux and the recumbent-awake period., Methods: Patients with heartburn and/or regurgitation at least three times a week were eligible for this study. All patients underwent upper endoscopy and were evaluated by demographic, Epworth Sleepiness scale, Berlin and GERD symptom checklist questionnaires. Subjects then underwent esophageal pH testing concomitantly with an actigraphy. All subjects were given esomeprazole 40 mg once daily for 7 days and completed a daily symptom record diary. On day 7, subjects repeated the pH test with actigraphy., Key Results: Twenty patients (mean age of 48.95 ± 18.69, age range 20-81 years) were enrolled. Esophageal acid exposure parameters, during recumbent-awake, recumbent-asleep, and conscious awakenings were significantly improved on last day of treatment as compared to baseline (p < 0.05). However, the frequency and duration of conscious awakenings and duration of recumbent-awake period did not improve as compared to baseline (p > 0.05)., Conclusions & Inferences: While esomeprazole significantly reduced esophageal acid exposure during conscious awakenings and recumbent-awake and asleep periods, it did not decrease the number and duration of conscious awakening or duration of recumbent-awake period., (© 2014 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Glycopeptides and linezolid are the most widely used antibiotics to treat infections by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp. We report the presence of various isolates of methicillin-resistant S. hominis subsp. hominis with resistance to linezolid and reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides. We studied ten blood culture isolates of S. hominis subsp. hominis from nine patients admitted to our hospital. Etest was used to study susceptibility to antibiotics commonly prescribed against staphylococci. Domain V region of the 23S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced to detect possible mutations that confer resistance to linezolid. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used for the clonality study of isolates. All isolates were resistant to oxacillin, gentamicin, levofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, and linezolid, and susceptible to tigecycline and daptomycin. Nine of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin, and showed heterogeneous resistance to glycopeptides. C2190T, G2603T, and G2474T mutations were detected in domain V of the 23S rRNA gene. PFGE showed the presence of two different clones. This report alerts to the possible appearance of clinical strains of methicillin-resistant staphylococci with intermediate resistance to glycopeptides, resistance to linezolid, and multiple resistance to other second-line antibiotics.

This report compares and considers the merits of existing, internationally available quality management systems suitable for implementation in experimental animal facilities. These are: the Good Laboratory Practice Guidelines, ISO 9000:2000 (International Organization for Standardization) and AAALAC International (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International). Good laboratory practice (GLP) is a legal requirement for institutions undertaking non-clinical health and environmental studies for the purpose of registering or licensing for use and which have to be 'GLP-compliant'. GLP guidelines are often only relevant for and obtainable by those institutions. ISO is primarily an external business standard, which provides a management tool to master and optimize a business activity; it aims to implement and enhance 'customer satisfaction'. AAALAC is primarily a peer-reviewed system of accreditation which evaluates the organization and procedures in programmes of animal care and use to ensure the appropriate use of animals, safeguard animal well-being (ensuring state-of-the-art housing, management, procedural techniques, etc.) as well as the management of health and safety of staff. Management needs to determine, on the basis of a facility's specific goals, whether benefits would arise from the introduction of a quality system and, if so, which system is most appropriate. The successful introduction of a quality system confers peer-recognition against an independent standard, thereby providing assurance of standards of animal care and use, improving the quality of animal studies, and contributing to the three Rs-reduction, refinement and replacement.

Zn is an essential mineral. The role of Zn in atherosclerosis is not clear. Epidemiological studies, which have reported contradictory results, are limited by the use of serum Zn levels as a marker of intake. We assessed the association of toenail Zn, which integrates dietary Zn intake over 3 to 12 months, with the risk of a first myocardial infarction. Toenail Zn concentrations were determined by neutron activation analysis in the European multi-centre case-control study on antioxidants, myocardial infarction and breast cancer. This multi-centre case-control study included 684 cases and 724 controls from eight European countries and Israel. Toenail Zn levels of controls (adjusted for age and study centre) were positively associated with age, alpha-tocopherol and Se, but not with additional dietary variables or with classical risk factors for CHD. Average toenail Zn was 106.0 mg/kg in cases (95 % CI 103.1, 108.9) and 107.5 mg/kg in controls (95 % CI 104.5, 110.7). After controlling for cardiovascular risk factors and for centre, the adjusted odds ratios of myocardial infarction for quintiles 2-5 of toenail Zn with respect to the first quintile were 0.97 (95 % CI 0.59, 1.58), 1.15 (95 % CI 0.72, 1.85), 0.91 (95 % CI 0.56, 1.50), and 0.85 (95 % CI 0.52, 1.39). The P for trend was 0.45. In conclusion toenail Zn levels (reflecting long-term dietary intake) were not significantly associated with acute myocardial infarction.

The paper presents results on Pu, U and Th isotope activity concentration measurements in some mushroom samples collected in Poland, Spain and Ukraine. The sampling sites differ a lot with regard to observed levels of Pu, its origin and isotope ratios as well as the environmental properties. Some of the Polish samples were collected in the northeastern part of the country with up to 30 Bq/m2 of Chernobyl Pu deposition. Other Polish and the Spanish samples are from areas with almost exclusively global fallout Pu present. Ukrainian samples were collected in a highly contaminated area with a deposition of about 3.7 kBq/m2 of Chernobyl (239-240)Pu. The maximum (239+240)Pu activity concentration was found equal to (54+/-4) Bq/kg (dw--dry weight) for a Ukrainian Cantharellus cibarius sample. Ukrainian samples have an extremely high radiocesium level, with maximum of (51+/-4) MBq/kg (dw). The maximum (239+240)Pu activity concentration for Polish samples was (81+/-5) mBq/kg (dw) for Xerocomus badius. From the isotopic ratio in this sample it can be concluded that Chernobyl fallout is the origin of Pu. More than twice as large was the Spanish maximum for Hebeloma cylindrosporum but with only global fallout Pu. Some aspects of the transfer of nuclides to fruit bodies is discussed and in some cases the transfer factors or aggregation coefficients were calculated. Especially high transfer factors were found for Hebeloma cylindrosporum from Spain.

Turkish and Kurdish HLA profiles are studied for the first time. The comparative study of their allele frequencies, characteristic haplotypes, genetic distances with other Mediterraneans is complemented by neighbor-joining dendrograms and correspondence analyses. Turks, Kurds, Armenians, Iranians, Jews, Lebanese and other (Eastern and Western) Mediterranean groups seem to share a common ancestry: the older "Mediterranean" substratum. No sign of the postulated Indo-European (Aryan) invasion (1200 B.C.) is detected by our genetic analysis. It is concluded that this invasion, if occurred, had a relatively few invaders in comparison to the already settled populations, i.e. Anatolian Hittite and Hurrian groups (older than 2000 B.C.). These may have given rise to present-day Kurdish, Armenian and Turkish populations.

The HLA allele frequency distribution of the Mexican Mazatecan Indians (Olmec culture) has been studied and compared with those of other First American Natives and worldwide populations (a total of 12,100 chromosomes; 6,050 individuals from 59 different populations). The main conclusions are: 1) An indirect evidence of Olmec and Mayan relatedness is suggested, further supporting the notion that Olmecs may have been the precursors of Mayans; 2) Language and genetics do not completely correlate in microenvironmental studies; and 3) Peopling of the Americas was probably more complex than postulated by Greenberg and others (three peopling waves). Significant genetic input from outside is not noticed in Meso and South American Amerindians according to the phylogenetic analyses; while all world populations (including Africans, Europeans, Asians, Australians, Polynesians, North American Na-Dene Indians and Eskimos) are genetically related. Meso and South American Amerindians tend to remain isolated in the Neighbor-Joining, correspondence and plane genetic distance analyses.

HLA-G is expected to play an important role during fetal development. Recently, a healthy individual homozygous for the HLA-G*0105N allele has been described, suggesting that HLA-G expression was not essential for fetal survival. We now report studies of one family with five healthy siblings homozygous for HLA-G*0105N, who had been normally delivered; three of these siblings were females who also had normal deliveries. In addition, HLA-G*0105N cDNA has been fully sequenced, and normal G1 membrane anchored protein cannot be translated since after the codon 130 cytosine deletion (exon 3) a reading frameshift is observed leading to the existence of premature stop codon at position 189 (beginning of exon 4). Other protein isoforms (G2, G3 and G6), all containing the leader peptide and the alpha1 domain, are possible and their messenger mRNAs were found; any of these may undertake the necessary HLA-G functions. Our data show that the membrane anchored HLA-G molecule is not necessary in either mother or fetus for a normal pregnancy and survival. Also, individuals homozygous for HLA-G*0105N are healthy and with no indications of immunodeficiency or autoimmunity.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III cancer prevention trial in subjects with previous resection of adenomatous colon polyps is nearing completion. The study's primary objective is to evaluate the effects of daily dietary supplementation with large (13.5 g/day) versus small (2.0 g/day) doses of wheat bran fiber for 3 years. A summary of the study design and a progress report are presented.

A prospective nonrandomized study was made of 17 basketball players with fractures of the proximal third of the shaft of the fifth metatarsal. Eight had acute fractures, which were treated with a cast without weight-bearing, and the other nine had stress fractures for which percutaneous compression screwing was initially used. In the first group, union was obtained in four cases in an average of 9 weeks, with resumption of sport by 12 weeks. Three had a good outcome and the fourth was fair. The other four cases, which had not healed after 12 weeks of immobilization, were subsequently treated using compression screws. Resumption of sport was achieved 20-24 weeks after the fracture. Two of these had a good result; in the other two the results were fair. Of the nine patients with stress fractures in which a screw was inserted, all healed between 8 and 14 weeks and returned to sport within 7-12 weeks. Seven had a good result and the other two only fair. There was one intraoperative complication, but no postoperative complications, such as nonunion or refracture, were observed. Even if the non-operative treatment is able to provide a good result, immobilization without weight-bearing does not guarantee healing. In this series, percutaneous screw fixation was able to achieve successful healing in a short period of time. Thus, this procedure seems to be preferable for primary treatment of this lesion in athletes.

Although hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can be reproduced in chimpanzees, these animals are rare and expensive. Tree shrews (tupaias) are small animals, closely related to primates, which adapt easily to a laboratory environment. In this work we have investigated the susceptibility of Tupaia belangeri chinensis to HCV infection. Tupaias caught in the wild in Yunnan (China) were inoculated in China with HCV genotype 1b (study A) and in Spain with a mixture of genotypes 1b, 1a, and 3 (study B). In study B tupaias were divided into three groups: group I was inoculated without previous manipulation, group II received 750 cGy of X-ray whole-body irradiation before inoculation, and group III was used as control. Transient or intermittent viremia occurred in 34.8% (8/23) and anti-HCV in 30.4% (7/23) of tupaias in study A. In study B a transient viremia was detected in 20% (2/10) in group I and in 50% (2/4) in group II. Anti-HCV was found in 1 tupaia from group I and in 3 from group II: Viremia lasted for longer and anti-HCV tended to reach higher titers in animals which received total body irradiation. ALT elevations and nonspecific pathological changes occurred in inoculated tupaias; however, the wild nature of the animals precludes the interpretation of these changes as solely due to HCV infection. In summary our results show that T.b. chinensis are susceptible to HCV and that whole-body irradiation may possibly increase the efficiency of the infection. These animals may serve as an in vivo system for culturing HCV and addressing pathophysiological and therapeutic issues of HCV infection.

To examine the consequences of nigrostriatal denervation and L-dopa treatment on the basal ganglia output system, we analyzed, by quantitative in situ hybridization, the messenger RNA coding for glutamic acid decarboxylase (Mr 67,000) (GAD67 mRNA) in pallidal cells from patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), monkeys rendered parkinsonian by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) receiving or not receiving L-dopa, and their respective control subjects. In MPTP-treated monkeys, the expression of GAD67 mRNA was increased in cells from the internal pallidum, and this effect was abolished by L-dopa treatment. There were no differences in the levels of GAD67 mRNA between patients with PD, who were all treated with L-dopa, and control subjects. These results indicate that the level of GAD67 mRNA is increased in the cells of the internal pallidum after nigrostriatal dopaminergic denervation and that this increase can be reversed by L-dopa therapy.

To examine the effects of nigrostriatal denervation on the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr), one of the main outputs of the basal ganglia, we used quantitative in situ hybridization to analyze the messenger RNA coding for Mr 67,000 glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD67 mRNA) in the SNpr neurons from patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), monkeys rendered parkinsonian by 1-methyl-4- phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), and their respective controls. In MPTP-intoxicated monkeys, the expression of GAD67 mRNA was increased in the SNpr neurons, and the increase was reversed by L-dopa treatment. There were no differences in the level of GAD67 mRNA between PD patients who had been treated with L-dopa and control subjects. Combined with the previously reported increased expression of GAD67 mRNA in the internal segment of the pallidum of MPTP-intoxicated monkeys, these data suggest that the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) activity of the output system of the basal ganglia is globally increased by nigrostriatal denervation. We also analyzed the level of GAD67 mRNA expression in the superior colliculus, a structure that receives the inhibitory influence of the GABAergic neurons of the SNpr and that is involved in eye movement control. GAD67 mRNA expression was reduced in both MPTP-intoxicated monkeys, whether or not they received L-dopa therapy, and PD patients, compared to their respective controls. This decrease may result from the hyperactivity of the inhibitory nigrotectal pathway, but also from other influences since it was not corrected by L-dopa therapy. These changes may account for the slight ocular motor and visuospatial cognitive impairment occurring in PD, even after L-dopa therapy.

Skin cancers are a serious health problem in the United States. One common method of skin cancer primary prevention is use of sunscreens. Research has been conducted to ascertain the role of active ingredients of sunscreen products in photoprotection and possible carcinogenesis. In contrast, little is known about the "other ingredients", listed or unlisted, on sunscreen product labels. One such ingredient is vitamin E. usually in the form of alpha-tocopherol acetate. Results of recent studies of skin carcinogenesis in an ultraviolet (UV) B mouse carcinogenesis model suggest that topically applied alpha-tocopherol acetate does not prevent and, under some conditions, enhances skin cancer development and growth, whereas the free unesterified from of alpha-tocopherol significantly reduces experimental UVB carcinogenesis. We have performed a Phase II cancer prevention study to evaluate whether topically applied alpha-tocopherol acetate is absorbed in human skin and metabolizes to the free or other forms. In this double-blind study, 19 men and women > 30 years of age who had at least three actinic keratoses on their forearms were randomly assigned to apply alpha-tocopherol acetate (125 mg/g) or difluoromethylornithine cream to their arms twice daily for three months. Blood samples and photographs and punch biopsies of actinic keratoses were obtained before and at the end of the study (Month 4). Plasma and skin concentrations of free alpha-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherol acetate, and gamma-tocopherol were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography at Month 4. The results of this report focus only on data obtained from the 11 participants randomized to the alpha-tocopherol acetate arm of the study. Topically applied alpha-tocopherol acetate was substantially absorbed in skin, with no evidence of conversion within skin to its unesterified form (i.e., free alpha-tocopherol). There was no evidence of systemic availability or biotransformation of topically applied alpha-tocopherol acetate. In summary, we have determined that alpha-tocopherol acetate is not metabolized to the free form of alpha-tocopherol in plasma or skin.

The effects of nigrostriatal denervation and L-dopa therapy on GABAergic neurons were analysed in patients with Parkinson's disease and in monkeys rendered parkinsonian by MPTP intoxication. The expression of the messenger RNA coding for the 67 kDa isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD67 mRNA), studied by quantitative in situ hybridization, was used as an index of the GABAergic activity of the striatal neurons. A significant increase in GAD67 mRNA expression, generalized to all GABAergic neurons, was observed in MPTP-treated monkeys compared to control monkeys in the putamen and caudate nucleus (+44 and +67% respectively), but not in the ventral striatum. L-Dopa therapy significantly reduced GAD67 mRNA expression in the putamen and caudate nucleus to levels similar to those found in control monkeys. However, the return to normal of GAD67 mRNA expression was not homogeneous across all neurons since it was followed by an increase of labelling in one subpopulation of GABAergic neurons and a decrease in another. These data suggest that in MPTP-treated monkeys the degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons results in a generalized increase in GABAergic activity in all the GABAergic neurons of the striatum, which is partially reversed by L-dopa therapy. As the expression of GAD67 mRNA is less intense in the ventral than in the dorsal striatum, this increase in striatal GABAergic activity may be related to the severity of nigrostriatal denervation. In parkinsonian patients who had been chronically treated with L-dopa, GAD67 mRNA expression was significantly decreased in all GABAergic neurons, in the caudate nucleus (by 44%), putamen (by 43.5%) and ventral striatum (by 26%). The opposite variation of GAD67 mRNA in patients with Parkinson's disease, compared with MPTP-treated monkeys, might be explained by the combination of chronic nigrostriatal denervation and long-term L-dopa therapy.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by the degeneration of melanized dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. The functional capacity of the surviving dopaminergic neurons is affected, as suggested by the subnormal levels of tyrosine hydroxylase messenger RNA and protein found in the remaining cells. The reduced expression of tyrosine hydroxylase may be due to either the evolving neurodegenerative process or its downregulation, possibly secondary to chronic levodopa treatment. The cellular content of tyrosine hydroxylase was determined in the mesencephalon from 16 Macaca fascicularis monkeys, using a semiquantitative immunocytochemical method. Thirteen monkeys were rendered parkinsonian by weekly intravenous injections of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) for 2 (subacute treatment) or 20 (chronic treatment) weeks. Three of the monkeys received levodopa and 3 others received GM1 ganglioside. The loss of dopaminergic neurons in the mesencephalon of the MPTP-intoxicated monkeys was severe in the substantia nigra, intermediate in cell groups A8 and A10, and almost undetectable in the central gray substance. After both subacute and chronic treatment, the cellular content of tyrosine hydroxylase was reduced by 40% in the surviving neurons of the lesioned substantia nigra, but by less in the other mesencephalic dopaminergic regions. Neuronal survival and tyrosine hydroxylase content in monkeys that had received levodopa were not significantly different. The cellular content of tyrosine hydroxylase was increased in the substantia nigra of the monkeys that received GM1 ganglioside injections. The results show that the decreased expression of tyrosine hydroxylase found in nigral dopaminergic neurons after partial degeneration of the mesostriatal dopaminergic system is not influenced by levodopa treatment and is partially reversed by GM1 ganglioside administration.

Hyperactivity of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is major characteristic of parkinsonism secondary to substantia nigra lesions. Interruption of the STN-internal pallidum (GPi) pathway is a new stereotactic target for Parkinson's disease. We have studied the antiparkinsonian efficacy of STN lesions in MPTP-treated monkeys. Four rhesus monkeys were made parkinsonian by MPTP (i.v. 0.15 +/- 1 mg/kg) administration over 3 months. Unilateral subthalamotomy (kainic acid) was performed by a standard stereotactic method. Severity was rated from 0 (normal) to V by fine manual motor tests. Three monkeys (severity state III/IV) showed marked improvement in spontaneous activity, facial expression and manual dexterity bilaterally but significantly greater in the limb contralateral to the lesion. Mild hemichorea was present in 2 and hemiballism in one. L-Dopa treatment (50 mg b.i.d.) enhanced the hemidyskinesias moderately. The therapeutic effect has persisted for over 8 months postsurgery. Monkey No.4 (severity stage V) showed chorea in the lower limb contralateral to the lesion but no improvement and died a few days later. Subthalamotomy improves parkinsonism in moderately severe parkinsonian monkeys. Dyskinesia might be a persistent complication.

Breast cancer mortality information contained in the available statistics derived from the Spanish death certificates has been reviewed. Mortality from breast neoplasms was grouped into three five-year periods: 1903-1907, 1931-1935 and 1975-1979. Age-adjusted rates were estimated for every province (n = 49) in each period, and confidence intervals for the standardized mortality ratios and adjusted rates were calculated. Results are presented with maps of Spain that illustrate provincial contrasts in each period. Secular breast cancer mortality trends in the provinces are discussed in comparison with those of other countries. Furthermore, values are compared with the geographical distribution of risk factors, the aim being to formulate hypothesis explaining the observed contrasts and suggesting some future research lines.

To evaluate the relationship between duration of preoperative stay and the risk of nosocomial infection, we studied 449 patients who underwent surgery at the University Hospital of Granada during the first six months of 1986. Patients were chosen from two cross-sectional surveys. Nosocomial infection was studied throughout each patient's hospital stay. Other variables included preoperative stay, age, severity and total length of stay. The data were analyzed by comparing nosocomial infection for different lengths of preoperative hospitalization, age and severity by calculating the Odds Ratio. The effects of age and severity were studied by stratifying patients by duration of preoperative stay. Two multivariate regression models were used to confirm the results of the stratified analysis. The results suggest that lengthening the preoperative stay may increase the risk of nosocomial infection in surgical wounds and in other sites, and may simultaneously potentiate the effects of other risk factors such as age and severity of the patient's condition, whose influence on susceptibility to infection increases with the duration of preoperative stay.

This study examined, in health care attenders, the effect of different sociodemographic variables and physical illness on the probability of suffering from mental disorders. In health centres, the prevalence of mental disorders was 19.3% (12.4% for males and 23.8% for females). Logistic modelling was used to investigate the joint effect on psychiatric morbidity of 6 sociodemographic variables and physical illness. It was found that sex, age, and physical illness exerted independent but not interactive effects on the probability of psychiatric morbidity.
