A geochemical comparison of early Palaeozoic felsic magmatic episodes throughout the south-western European margin of Gondwana is made and includes (i) Furongian–Early Ordovician (Toledanian) activities recorded in the Central Iberian and Galicia–Trás-os-Montes zones of the Iberian Massif, and (ii) Early–Late Ordovician (Sardic) activities in the Eastern Pyrenees, Occitan Domain (Albigeois, Montagne Noire and Mouthoumet massifs) and Sardinia. Both phases are related to uplift and denudation of an inherited palaeorelief, and stratigraphically preserved as distinct angular discordances and paraconformities involving gaps of up to 22 million years. The geochemical features of the predominantly felsic Toledanian and Sardic activities point to a predominance of magmatic byproducts derived from the melting of metasedimentary rocks, rich in SiO2 and K2O and with a peraluminous character. Zr ∕ TiO2, Zr ∕ Nb, Nb ∕ Y and Zr vs. Ga ∕ Al ratios, and rare-earth element (REE) and εNd(t) values suggest the contemporaneity, for both phases, of two geochemical scenarios characterized by arc and extensional features evolving to distinct extensional and rifting conditions associated with the final outpouring of mafic tholeiite-dominant lava flows. The Toledanian and Sardic magmatic phases are linked to neither metamorphism nor penetrative deformation; on the contrary, their unconformities are associated with foliation-free open folds subsequently affected by the Variscan deformation. The geochemical and structural framework precludes subduction-generated melts reaching the crust in a magmatic arc-to-back-arc setting and favours partial melting of sediments and/or granitoids in the lower continental crust triggered by the underplating of hot mafic magmas related to the opening of the Rheic Ocean.

The Ediacaran-Lower Ordovician successions exposed in the Eastern Pyrenees are updated and revised based on recent U-Pb zircon radiometric ages, intertonguing relationships of carbonate-dominated strata, and onlapping patterns marking the top of volcano-sedimentary complexes. A stratigraphic comparison with neighbouring pre-Variscan outcrops from the Montagne Noire (southern French Massif Central) and Sardinia is related to i) the absence of Cadomian deformation close to the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary interval; ii) the presence of an episodic, Cadomian-related, acidic-dominant volcanism related to carbonate production punctuating the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition, similar to that recorded in the northern Montagne Noire; and iii) the lack of Guzhangian (Late Cambrian Epoch 3) regressive shoal complexes present in the Montagne Noire and probably in Sardinia.

El siguiente documento recopila los resúmenes cortos presentados en el IMECT (International Meeting on the Ediacaran System and the Ediacaran-Cambrian Transition), celebrado del 17 al 24 de octubre de 2019 en Guadalupe (Geoparque Villuercas-Ibores-Jara). Estos resúmenes no han sido sometidos a revisión por pares y sólo fueron revisados por el Comité Organizador por lo que respecta a aspectos formales.

Se describen y figuran aquí varias unidades estratigráficas características del tránsito Ediacárico-Cámbrico entre Guadalupe y Castañar de Ibor, al norte del Geoparque de Villuercas-Ibores-Jara (Cáceres). Se detallan los afloramientos (i) de las formaciones de Castañar y Villarta (Grupo de Ibor, Ediacárico terminal y Terreneuviense), junto a su contenido en vendoténidos, sabellidítidos y arrecifes microbianos con Cloudina; y (ii) de la Formación de San Lorenzo (Terreneuviense) y su contenido paleoicnológico. Por último, se destaca el registro paleoicnológico de la Cuarcita Armoricana (Ordovícico Inferior), principalmente de Cruziana y Daedalus, que caracteriza algunos puntos de interés geológico (LIG) en el Geoparque.

Una de las esquinas de los mapas geográficos que enlazan las provincias de Badajoz, Cáceres y Toledo contiene unos afloramientos claves para entender el tránsito Ediacárico-Cámbrico de la Zona Centroibérica. En los núcleos del Anticlinorio Extremeño y de los Anticlinales de Ibor y Valdelacasa afloran el Supergrupo del Alcudiense inferior-Domo Extremeño (donde destacan las diamictitas de la Formación de Orellana), los arrecifes microbianos más espectaculares con Cloudina de la Formación de Villarta y la base paleoicnológica del Cámbrico en la Formación de Arrocampo (las dos últimas formaciones pertenecen al Grupo de Ibor). Los afloramientos que tradicionalmente se consideraban como representantes del límite Precámbrico-Cámbrico y base del piso regional Cordubiense se sitúan en el miembro inferior de la Formación del Pusa, suprayacentes al Grupo de Ibor y considerados actualmente como intra-terreneuvienses.

An updated stratigraphic subdivision of the Ediacaran and Terreneuvian in the Alcudia valley and the Toledo Mountains, Central Iberian Zone, is documented here. The Lower Alcudian-Domo Extremeño Supergroup is subdivided, from bottom to top, into the conformable Guadiana (La Coronada and Sta. Mª de Zújar formations) and Campanario (Botija, Monroy and Orellana formations) groups. The supergroup contains biostratigraphically non-significant bacterial acritarchs and dubious fossils, but its Ediacaran age is constrained by detrital zircon analyses. This siliciclastic sedimentary package is unconformably overlain by either the siliciclastic-carbonate Ibor Group (Castañar, Villarta and Arrocampo formations) or the siliciclastic Cíjara Formation. The fossil content of the former group includes Sabelliditids, Vendotaenids, macrophytes, bioaccumulations and reefs rich in Cloudina, Sinotubulites, Protolagena and stromatolites and thrombolites, and a wide diversity of ichnofossils; whereas the Cíjara Formation has yielded bacteria attributed to Bavlinella and Palaeogomphosphaeria, and simple trace fossils (Gordia, Helminthoidichnites and treptichnids). The Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary, based on ichnofossils, lies at the base of the Arrocampo Formation and the uppermost part of the Cíjara Formation. In the Alcudia valley, the Ibor Group is subdivided into another three-fold, lithologically equivalent subdivision, known as the Tamujar, Hinojosas (rich in ichnofossils, such as treptichnids, Monomorphichnus, Psammichnites and Taphrelminthopsis) and Cabezarrubias (including Bergaueria and Planolites) formations. Another unconformity, intra-Fortunian in age, marks the tops of the Ibor Group and the Cíjara Formation, wich are subsequently overlain by the San Lorenzo Formation and some megabreccia beds, respectively. Overlying the slope-related Fuentes, Membrillar and Navalpino megrabreccia beds, the Terreneuvian-Cambrian Series 2, heterolithic Pusa Formation is subdivided into thre members, the middle one characterized by the record of phosphate ore deposits (e.g., the Fontanarejo Bed). The formation is shale dominated and has yielded the body-fossil Beltanelliformis and numerous ichnofossils (Monomorphicnus and Treptichnus; lower member), sponge spicules associated with thrombolites (middle member), and Scenella, trilobites, archaeocyaths and ichnofossils (Dactyloidites, Psammichnites, Rusophycus and Teichichnus; upper member). Where the megabreccia beds are absent, the Ibor Group is unconformably overlain by the San Lorenzo and Fuentepizarra formations, the latter containing phosphatic limestone interbeds rich in skeletonized microfossils, such as Anabarella, which represents the Fortunian-Cambrian Stage 2 boundary interval.

Winter legume cover crops or double-cropping in high N-fertilizer maize-based sprinkler-irrigated systems enhance agroecosystem diversity and potentially increase yields. However, the effects on direct N 2 O emissions and global warming potential (GWP) have not been fully established. For two years, in the Ebro Valley (Spain), four maize-based systems consisted of: long-season maize (Zea mays) with winter fallow period (F-LSM) the reference system; or after a leguminous cover crop (common vetch, Vicia sativa) (CC-LSM); and short-season maize after a cereal crop (barley, Hordeum vulgare) (B-SSM) or after a leguminous crop (pea, Pisum sativum) (P-SSM). They were assessed in terms of productivity, direct greenhouse gasses emissions (GHG: N 2 O, CH 4 , CO 2 ), and global warming potential (GWP). Direct GHG emissions were measured using the static chamber technique, while soil parameters were monitored. Crop yields and nitrogen uptake were also quantified. GHG emissions linked to management and inputs were calculated to obtain GWP and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI). The most productive system (B-SSM) obtained the highest direct (79 %, 35 %, and 30 % higher than the F-LSM, P-SSM, and CC-SSM, respectively) and scaled N 2 O emissions. The P-SSM system had similar N-uptake-scaled emissions to the monocropping (MC) systems. Irrigation, fertilizer, and farm operations accounted for the 26 %, 31 %, and 27 % of the total indirect emissions, respectively. Fertilizer production-related emissions in B-SSM and F-LSM systems were 172 % and 45 % higher than the average emissions in the systems with legumes (461 kg CO 2 eq. ha -1 ). Diversified systems lead to slightly higher GHGI values than the reference system (F-LSM). However, no differences were found between the F-LSM and P-SSM systems in GWP (4521 and 5512 kg CO 2 -eq. ha -1 , respectively) or GHGI (144 and 158 kg CO 2 -eq. ha -1 , respectively). Objective: To evaluate the relevance of tumour size in adrenal tumours in the estimation of malignancy risk and in the outcomes of adrenalectomy., Methods: We evaluate the histological results and surgical outcomes (intraoperative and postsurgical complications) in a retrospective single-centre cohort of patients without history of active extraadrenal malignancy with adrenal tumours consecutively operated in our centre during January 2010 and December 2020. We compared these results in lesions smaller and larger than 40, 50, and 60 mm., Results: Of 131 patients with adrenal tumours who underwent adrenalectomy, 76 (58.0%) had adrenal masses measuring ≥ 40 mm; 47 were > 50 mm and 28 > 60 mm. The final diagnosis was adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) in 7 patients, pheochromocytoma in 35, and benign lesions in the remaining. All patients with ACC had adrenal masses > 50 mm, with Hounsfield units > 40 and low lipidic content in the CT. The risk of ACC and pheochromocytoma increased as tumour size did. The diagnostic accuracy of tumour size was quite good for the prediction of ACC (AUC-ROC 0.883). Nevertheless, when only adrenal tumours with HU < 40 were considered, the risk of ACC was 0% independent of tumour size. For pheochromocytomas, the risk was of 8.6% independent of tumour size for lesions with < 20HU. The risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications was independent of tumour size., Conclusion: Risk of malignancy and of pheochromocytoma increased as tumour size increased, but, in the presurgical estimation of malignancy risk and of pheochromocytoma, not only tumour size, also lipidic content and other radiological features, should be considered. The risk of complications was independent of tumour size, but hospital stay was longer in patients with complication or open approach., (© 2022. A portfolio of agricultural practices is now available that can contribute to reaching European mitigation targets. Among them, the management of agricultural soils has a large potential for reducing GHG emissions or sequestering carbon. Many of the practices are based on well tested agronomic and technical know-how, with proven benefits for farmers and the environment. A suite of practices has to be used since none of the practices can provide a unique solution. However, there are limitations in the process of policy development: (a) agricultural activities are based on biological processes and thus, these practices are location specific and climate, soils and crops determine their agronomic potential; (b) since agriculture sustains rural communities, the costs and potential for implementation have also to be regionally evaluated and (c) the aggregated regional potential of the combination of practices has to be defined in order to inform abatement targets. We believe that, when implementing mitigation practices, three questions are important: Are they cost-effective for farmers? Do they reduce GHG emissions? What policies favour their implementation? This study addressed these questions in three sequential steps. First, mapping the use of representative soil management practices in the European regions to provide a spatial context to upscale the local results. Second, using a Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) in a Mediterranean case study (NE Spain) for ranking soil management practices in terms of their cost-effectiveness. Finally, using a wedge approach of the practices as a complementary tool to link science to mitigation policy. A set of soil management practices was found to be financially attractive for Mediterranean farmers, which in turn could achieve significant abatements (e.g., 1.34 MtCO2e in the case study region). The quantitative analysis was completed by a discussion of potential farming and policy choices to shape realistic mitigation policy at European regional level., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The final esthetic result is a common concern of patients with eyelid tumors, especially young patients and those with tumors affecting the medial edge of the lower eyelid., Methods: The procedure herein described combines two lateral flaps: one tarsoconjunctival and the other from the periosteum. The first step is removal of the tumor lesion. Preseptal dissection is then performed through a subciliary incision on both the lateral and medial halves of the eyelid up to the orbital rim. Next, the lateral canthal tendon, lateral attachment of the orbital septum, capsulopalpebral fascia, and conjunctiva are cut. This allows the medial displacement of the tarsoconjunctival flap, which is sutured to the defect area. The second flap, a periosteal strip, is used to reconstruct the tarsus and lateral canthal tendon, providing firm support for the posterior lamella. The orbicularis muscle is anchored to the orbital rim, and the skin of the lower eyelid is directly sutured to the subciliary incision and periosteal strip., Results: The author successfully carried out this procedure on nine patients. None of the patients developed ocular irritation or postoperative epiphora., Conclusions: The defects that can be repaired by this technique are equivalent in size to those repaired by the Tenzel procedure. Unlike the semicircular flap procedure, this technique allows eyelid reconstruction with no vertical scarring and a smaller lateral incision, and it ensures soft contact between the palpebral rim and surface of the eyeball. Background: Simulators have been used as a training method; they allow training, skill development, standardization of techniques and the performance of a greater number of risk-free procedures. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is the standard treatment for early gastric cancer since it allows en bloc resection of larger lesions however requires longer procedure time and has more complications than endoscopic mucosal resection., Objective: To evaluate the use of biological inanimate simulators in endoscopic training for the development of skills required for ESD., Methods: Experimental design using a biological inanimate simulator to evaluate the development of endoscopic skills. Five trained endoscopists with knowledge of the ESD technique, but without previous experience were selected. Technical success, complication rate and procedure time were evaluated. Each participant performed a self-evaluation., Results: 18 lesions of 10-20 mm in diameter were dissected, with a mean area of 2.64 ± 2 cm2 and a mean procedure time of 21.08 ± 14.01 minutes (5.48 - 48.61). Self-evaluation and instructor's evaluation showed a strong positive correlation. There was no correlation between lesion size and procedure time. There was one perforation (5.8%), which was successfully managed with one endoclip. Complications such as bleeding could not be assed., Conclusions: The use of inanimate biological simulators allows training in complex endoscopic procedures such as ESD with a wide safety margin. Lesion size did not correlate with procedure time. It is necessary to increase the number of procedures to improve the learning curve. This simulator does not allow evaluation of complications other than perforations.
